run out of space - Samsung Galaxy A30 Questions & Answers

I have a Samsung A30, I am located on a military base with no access to a computer so I can't flash to a stock rom, but I need to do the best to solve this problem:
I have to reset my phone every few hours, when I power it on it shows 40Gb free, after 1 or 2 hours it shows 30Gb free and after a couple hours it runs out of space.
Developer options are enabled on this phone, OEM Unlocking, USB debugging, verify apps over USB and multiple PBAP Properties.
Also, Magisk Manager is installed.
What could be causing it or what could be filling up my space?

internal Storage Problem

Hello, I have an HTC Touch diamond from Telus, i've searched around these forums, and can't find quite the similar problem I have. My device only lists 102.55 MB of internal storage in the settings, and when i try to the Clear Storage program it says it can't find the mass storage, is this fixable or do i have to take it back to Telus.
Are you sure? If you click on "memory" in "settings" the first screen you get ("main" tab) only refers to the ROM and RAM available. You need to click on the "storage card" tab to find the 4Gb of internal storage

I am experiencing the same issue with the Sprint version I received today. Same issue with the Clear Storage program. When I go to settings, memory, storage card, it says "Total Storage Card Memory: Not installed"
Thanks.
Can you find the internal storage using file explorer on the HTC and explorer on activsync on your PC? Have you suceeded in copying something to it using activsync? If you can it is there. Why it is not being reported in memory is not so clear
A problem which I had a few times ocured when I tried to start a programm on the internal storage whil it was conected to a pc as a internal storage then the Diamond gives the internal storage a other name such as internal storage 1, 2 etc
Have a look at your file explorer you maid find it there.
Willem
Slight variation on this topic but related.
Can someone tell me if there are hidden files or something similar on the internal storage?
When I look at All settings -> system -> memory, it says that there is 2725MB in use but if I total the individual values for each folder in my internal storage it only adds up to 2122MB. It's driving me mad as space is limited enough as it is...
In a response to an earlier query, if you plugin your device as a mass storage device, the Internal Storage is unmounted from the phone's system so you cannot use it, and when you try to launch an application which requires this internal storage you can run into big problems of it "creating" a new Internal Storage. By this time when you unplug your device from the computer it will then rename your actual Internal Storage to Internal Storage 1/2 and you will have to go into file explorer and delete this, then reconnect your device to the computer and it should be ok again when you disconnect it.

A good point. To give you an example of how this works. I installed TT6 by putting my (legitimate) CAB file maps etc onto the internal memory by setting it as a USB device and using drag and drop in Explorer. The moment I disconnected the phone from the PC it re-recognised the internal memory and ran the TomTom auto-installation app. It is exactly the same as inserting an SD card into an SD slot of any other PDA.
Having same issue. I deleted the contents and the folder Internal Storage and am doing a hard reset. Will post results.
BTW - HTC and Sprint really should have a better solution to fixing this rather than all this mess. Even the ipod is easier to remount when you unplug during sync and I thought that was annoying....

I think you may have misunderstood what we are saying. This problem only occurs when you choose the (non-default) option of the PC recognising the internal storage as a seperate USB drive rather than as an activsync connection when you make your connection to the PC. If you choose that option then no automatic activsync activity will occur when you dock because activsync will not start. On the other hand file transfers will be much quicker and easier and you can use drag and drop in your PC's explorer.
If you decide not to use this facility then activsync works fine and you should have no problems with automated syncing and unplugging whilst that is happening (although that latter action is not recomended with either Windows or Apple based phones or PDAs).
The main advantage that Windows based PDAs and phones have over Apple based ones are that they are much more easily changed (as most of these forums show!) and "tweaked" to suit what the end user wants. Apple is more "technology for technophobes". However the disadvantage with the Windows system is that there is more for the end user to bugger up - hence all the cries for help on this forum.
No I understood what you meant. I was just comparing the issue. When Internal Storage still shows up under My Device but does not show up under Memory it tells me that the phone has "un mounted" the memory. The question is how do you re-mount this? Unless i am missing something which I very well may be....this appears to be the issue. At least the one I am faced with.

You remount it by returning the HTC to its standard activsync setting, via its settings menu You can do that while it is still connected to the PC and when you hit OK activsync instantly starts and syncs. In addition Explorer recognises it as a mobile device rather than the removable storage when it was in USB mode.
I do not think it is correct to compare an additional Windows feature (that the Apple does not have) with the standard feature that the Apple does have. A more accurate comparison would be the two in the same activsync mode, in which case they are similar, and neither has this problem
At the end of the day if anybody does not like the extra facility the HTC has to show and use its internal storage in the same way as a memory card when hooked up to the PC (because of its disadvantages) then they should not use it and they should stick with activsync. At least in Windows world we have the option.
WOW!
Dropping the ipod reference and my apologies for stepping on toes by mentioning it.
Setting it to active sync or hard drive has NO affect on this what so ever. I wish it did as it would be an easy fix. Apparently during any kind of disconnect the memory module freaks out and it corrupts the file system. That is apparently why the phone will not recognize it. Some people have had success connecting the phone over and over to a computer until it mounts the drive and then via the computer they format the drive and then hard reset and its fixed.
In this case its very similar as the HTC device will not remount the memory module. I contacted HTC and they verified that its a problem and have recommended an RMA to sprint.
Personally I don't even buy the HTC response. There has to be a way to remount the memory back to the phone as the drive will occasionally show up even in windows. It just wont allow a format as it locks up.
Oops sorry if I sounded a tad touchy... . I really did not mean to upset.
It is just that I think that Apple are really good at marketing to the "cool fool" market, and persuading people that they are technologically more advanced than they really are. The classic example of this is the iphone that was trumpetted as having lots of "new" benefits, which had been on other competitor's phones for ages. The only thing cutting edge about them is their ease of use (which is I have to admit very good)
However I do not have the problem you are describing with my HTC touch diamond, and nor, I suspect, do the vast majority of other users. My memory module has never freaked out and corrupted my file system no matter how many times I connect or disconnect and no matter how I do it. So I suspect it is not a universal HTC problem, but one limited to the way that Sprint and maybe others (I assume in the US?) have implemented the software, or maybe on a rogue batch of hardware or software?
No worries...text does that some times.
Yeah I think its pretty much a US thing. PPCGEEKS has a thread going about it and it appears to be all sprint phone related.

So far what I have is this: When using file explorer, under My Device Is a folder called Internal Storage. When I go into settings to check memory, I have Storage & Program, 102.55MB and 203.84MB, respectively, that's Total. In the Storage card tab, it says Not installed. And when i try to clear storage and format internal storage it says "no Mass Storage found"
So I hopped over to PPC and this is what I found, unfortunately i'm going to work so no time but will try and report later on.

No go, Vista won't recognize my diamond as a drive hence no format...
I now know what I did wrong, I copied the internal storage to pc then back again using the disk function instead of AS. I now have internal storage2 showing and can't access any programs.
Can anyone tell me how to rename I.S.2 to I.S please.
delete the Internal Storage folder (which will just be a folder) with total commander, resco explorer or file explorer, then connect ur phone to ur pc in disk mode, then disconnect and it should rename back!

[PROJECT] SyncManager v0.3 - take control of your ActiveSync!

SyncManager v0.3
Improve your ActiveSync experience!
Ever wanted to connect the phone to your PC and only have it recharge your battery?
Ever wanted the cable to route internet connection and allow you to view files without constant synchronizing?
Ever wanted the phone to disable wifi once you have ActiveSync connection?
Ever wanted the phone to just recharge and suppress cable connection when you're on wifi?
If you answered any of the question positively, you are in for a treat
SyncManager works silently on background and forces custom behaviour on your ActiveSync cable connection.
Working on program core derived from Lumos it has minimum CPU requirements and it will only go down in future versions.
Please beware the program is still VERY beta and this release is only meant for advanced users who can
1) extract files to your device without CAB installer
2) edit plain text files for configuration (you can use pword but select NO on save)
3) can work with a task manager
4) won't curse me because they had to softreset
5) won't curse me because they had to hardreset but that would have already happened to me (luckie in that matter)
*USERS THAT CAN'T DO ANY OF THE 5 THINGS ABOVE*
= > Go get a cookie and return when this app is done
Archive content:
SyncManager.exe
- main program, launch once to activate, launch again to deactivate
- if anything unexpected happens and program will disable your AS capability, just start it again to activate its failsafe
settings.txt
- you probably know this from Lumos, it's the same core
- some options do not yet work properly, I will keep updating this list with every new version but the file itself contains all definitions.
Options in this code block should work as advertised:
Code:
POLLING_INTERVAL
- daemon polling interval ms, keep this in reasonably long intervals,
there's no reason to poll too often. I use 5000 - 10000 for testing.
KILL_AS_ALWAYS
- inhibits ActiveSync once it synchronize one time, it will never synchronize again
- internet connection and file transfers are available
KILL_USB_ALWAYS
- cable connection in activesync mode will not engage, it will only recharge
- Mass storage mode is unaffected
- no connection is made, therefore no internet or transfer
- if triggered in midflight, it will drop the current AS connection
KILL_USB_ON_CONNECTED_WIFI
- triggers only when wifi is online
- cable connection in activesync mode will not engage, it will only recharge
- if triggered in midflight, it will drop the current AS connection
DISCONNECT_WIFI_WHEN_AS_CONNECTED
- once your device establishes network connection with PC, wifi is disabled
RECONNECT_WIFI_WHEN_AS_DISCONNECT
- if wifi was previously disabled by using [I]DISCONNECT_WIFI_WHEN_AS_CONNECTED[/I],
it will be re-enabled once you unplug the cable
This version is much more stable than v0.1 and it's possible to assign it after start after you thoroughly test its functionality in normal mode.
Be advised that some combinations of settings have not been tested and while it is unlikely to cause any serious problem try to avoid combinations that make no sense
Program should handle any normal scenario without problems.
WARNING1: The program was tested only on HTC Raphael and is not guaranteed to work on older devices, use at your own risk and PLEASE make a system backup first.
WARNING2: Advanced wi-fi options may not work outside Touch series, please test and report your device. Non Touch series users - backup first!
Enjoy experimenting and please recommend any changes here.
If it works well, and your device is not in the list of compatible devices, please report it.

You have a typo there should say "all" not "any" - LOL
If this software is only half as good as Lumos you've got a winner.
syncmanager
I was thinking that was why the syncmanager that come with the Raphael was for lol
It's far from perfect but since it exist, it can be improved
The manager bundled with raphael is only a switcher between RNDIS and Mass Storage.
Firstly there is no such option as "recharge only", which is great if you're using only mass storage for transfers and otherwise just recharge the phone on USB cable BUT you can't leave the phone on mass storage because you need to access stuff on storage card from phone (SyncManager can actually mutate the Activesync mode to Charge Only while Mass storage works as before if you switch to it).
Secondly when activesync is active, it attempts to synchronize every 5 minutes - seriously slowing down the phone when you least need it (SyncManager can force activesync to synchronize just once and quit while leaving the cable internet connection and file transfers online).
These are just 2 of many scenarios when you may consider needing a tool like this.
And no, it can't be improved, the switching dialog is not just activated on cable connect, it appears to be hard-coded into the RNDIS and MassStorage control DLLs, that makes it quite dificult to change.
I rarely use activesync. In fact, only when I flash ROM / Radio on my phone or if I absolutely can NOT find a .cab file for on-device installation. And every time I look in my task manager, there it is, lurking. Not that it uses really any memory. I do suspect though that it is responsible for annoyances such as my phone not unmounting from computer when in disk drive mode, etc.
Feel free to call this a stupid question / request:
Will this utility be able to disable activesync all together?
From my perusing of this forum, I have seen others claiming they never use activesync either, I am not the only one
just set
KILL_USB_ALWAYS = 1
it will disable AS completely (but of course disables file transfer and networking completely)
it should work.. well it did last time I tried
but if you really want to do this permanently, you can disable 'USB connection in ActiveSync settings when it's unplugged

40 downloads and 0 comments? Come on, no suggestions for next versions, no non-touch phones, no bricked devices?
Tried it on a Samsung i900. So far seems to work fine (but I haven't tested it for long). I find 400kb of memory a little too much... Is it .Net?
As for sugestions how about something similar to ASyncKiller? Currently it doesn't always kill ASync... Shouldn't be too heavy. ASK only takes about 4kb...
Also having a GUI for the config of the app behaviour would be nice (and shouldn't take much).
Well I tried ASyncKiller before and it does exactly nothing on my device.
Anyways the idea of SyncManager is not to kill activesync process so it's not in your task manager. It is supposed to let your activesync connect to PC so that you have network and filetransfer capabilities but prevent periodic synchronization (every 5 minutes I believe) that can't be turned off otherwise. Or to force some special behaviour in case you use alternative network connection. Or make your PC to only recharge the device. If it was to simply kill activesync, I would have final version with 9kb RAM usage by now, it's one line of code in a loop I believe. Sync Manager is now 437 lines plus notify window and configuration module by the way.
I know that 719kb tops may be a bit much on older devices, but it's really nothing on new devices with 256+MB RAM where only thing that really matters is CPU usage. I will however do my best to decrease it cause I don't like it either (it's the darn notification window that takes so much). This is by no means a final version and as every good programmer I make it work first and optimize later
Thanks for reporting your device too.

MTP/Kies connection problem when phone is locked

Hi,
I'm having some problems with my Note connecting to my computer. My PC is running Windows Ultimate 64 bit and I'm running the latest version of Kies (and every other driver is up to date).
Apparently, my computer only "sees" my Note (in MTP mode) if I connect it when the screen is unlocked (I keep a screen / key guard on all the time on my Note). If I connect the Note when it is "sleeping", the computer "sees" it but I cannot access any of its drives (MTP here). Kies does not "see" it either if I connect it while it's "sleeping".
If I connect my Note when it's "awake" and unlocked, both Kies and Windows can access it perfectly. So then I schedule a back up through Kies and, while in progress, the Note goes to sleep / lock mode (my screen times out after 15 seconds). When that happens, Kies hangs doing the backup (and never finishes) and sometimes I cannot access it any more with Windows Explorer.
I've tried any trick in the book, including reinstalling Kies / drivers or troubleshooting the connection and I kind of am out of ideas here. What do you think?
Thank you!

[Q] Access Denial on Interop Unlocked ATIV S. System Apps Fail to Start

Howdy,
Lately I started experiencing access issues with the phone. One of these is the screenshot issue. The screenshot gets taken, although the phone says Couldn't take screenshot and saves the screenshot. The screenshot does not get shown in the Photos app like the app can't access the file.
Here are all of the access issues I experience, I believe they are connected all together and have the same root cause.
1. Whenever I press WindowsKey+Turn off button to take a screenshot, the phone says Saving to Screenshots... and then Couldn't take screenshot. The screenshot does not get saved to Screenshots folder. If I check this same Screenshots folder via Windows Explorer, it shows the taken screenshot is there
2. No camera app, including the built-in one, can save the taken photo. Whenever I start the camera and press the Camera button, the Camera app either disappears as if it crashed (and Start screen is shown) or the Photos app is shown instead of just taken photo. Checking the Camera roll section in the Photos app does not reveal the photo as if it wasn't taken. If I check this same Camera roll folder via Windows Explorer, it shows the taken image is there!
So the phone does take photos and screenshots but can't read them! Why?
3. Most of the time Photos app fails on start. You tap photos, it shows Loading... and then the app closes and Start screen gets shown. The other time it shows Loading... then Resuming... then Loading... again and does that multiple times. Sometimes it starts well but shows only old photos and screenshots that were taken before I started experiencing issues with taking screenshots and starting system apps.
4. Often so the Phone storage app available in Settings doesn't start either and closes after showing Loading... Sometimes it starts with no issues.
5. Music app fails to start every now and then. If I am being preserving, the app starts after multiple attempts to launch it. When it starts, it does not return to album view when you click Play on a song in an album. The app just freezes.
6. Finally, my System section in Settings|Phone storage|Phone now shows 4.29 GB (!) although it consumed 2.12 just before I started experiencing these strange issues. Seem like it has been flood with dumps and logs.
It appears the issues arisen when I replaced my 32GB Transcend UHS-I QSDXC card with a 64 GB by µSDXC from Sandisk and attempted to synchronize photos via Zune application and both WinRT and Desktop versions of Windows Phone apps.
More detail:
1. I interop-unlocked the phone and it worked for a while.
2. My 32 GB SD card ran out of memory and I replaced it with a 64 GB SD card.
3. The 64 GB SanDisk SD card appeared incompatible with Samsung ATIV S and looked as if it had been dismounted every now and then. The phone had been rebooting every 10 minutes or like and CPU was heating high.
4. I removed the 64 GB card and started the phone without the card. It worked well. The phone stopped heating and rebooting ever since I removed the card.
However, I noticed that I no longer can start the Photos app. Moreover, Phone storage also was failing start and Camera app did not make screenshots and photos.
5. I inserted the 64 GB card to my wife's Nokia Lumia 620 and it worked fine there. I put the 32 GB card back into my Samsung ATIV S but access issues are still there.
How do I fix this? Any clue is highly welcome.
I remember in Windows Phone 7.0 days, MSFT was joining SD card File System with the one on phone's memory. Could it be that storage array has been broken when I replaced the memory card?
Also could it be that something screwed with bootstrap (the phone is interop-unlocked and has been boot strapped before it's been unlocked).
Once again, the phone is developer unlocked and interop-unlocked.
I plan to hard reset but am worrying of getting my phone bricked. What if re-imaging or whatever the phone does when it resets itself (I assume it applies a WIM file like Windows 8 does it on PCs)?
Seems like inserting 64 GB SanDisk screwed the phone.
Important note: I did NOT use remove SD Card button on Settings|Phone storage|SD Card when replacing the cards. It just felt no sense to do that provided that I had switched the phone before I replaced the card.
I appreciate your help. Don't want contact Samsung service; my phone wasn't produced for the country where I live.
Hard reset is probably your best bet, since simply power-cycling didn't fix anything. You could check in SamWP8 Tools (assuming you have it installed) and reset all options to their defaults... The danger in hard reset is that you can't interop-unlock if you have GDR3 installed with the official updates from Samsung (as opposed to just the GR3 early release from Microsoft, which is fine).
For what it's worth, my GDR3 (MS bits only) SGH-T899M has a 64GB microSD card in it, has for months, and has no problems like you describe. Sorry I can't help more.

Thank you for your response. After I talked with W.O.L.F and other gentlemen over here, I came to the conclusion that the issue is that I toggled the Full access to file system in WPH Tweaks. Looks like the option is non-revertible, moreover, it looks like turning the Full FS access off in fact LOCKED access to file system for some system API.
Silly me, I should've used my mind before doing that, but what's done, done.
Using SamWP8 Tools made things even worse, my phone stopped showing in Windows Explorer and started to hang as if it was busy all the time. The fact that it was heating all the time made me think that this toggle-in/toggle-off operations with Full File System access did make something to some drivers is Windows Phone. I don't know what exactly happened but the phone stopped being detected by OS as ATIV S, disappeared from Removable Devices in Windows Explorer and showed only in USB devices section. Also in Device Manager it went from Samsung ATIV S to MTM USB Device or something. Screwed completely.
I had to hard reset the phone, but the 'luck' that I had GDR3 preview (8.x.512.x as far as I remember) turned it into brick. After I hard reset the phone, all I saw was the standard Samsung welcome screen with dandelions and a black screen that showed instead of Start screen.
I understand it like I have to Flash the phone back to GDR2 using publicly available ROMs but am confused with two things:
1. Last time I checked, when the phone was still usable, the phone showed that I had XEN as a CSC.
Now what if I flash it with a different CSC like SER; since I live in Russia?
2. If I use 64-bit flavor Windows 8, would Samsung driver work fine there, I don't want to mess with incomplete flash.
I am pretty confident that I know how to turn off signature verification for bootmgr in Windows 8, but I am not sure I know how to make sure installed driver works fine (except for checking its return code on starting).
I would appreciate your recommendations. I would've sent my phone to Samsung service, but I bet it won't give me anything except for additional problems.
The "Full FS access" hack in SamWP8 Tools has nothing to do with the actual file system. It just modifies the way that the MTP service on the phone - the one that normally lets you only see the documents and media folders - launches so that it can access all of drive C:. It doesn't actually *change* the file system in any way - the tweak to the service configuration is in the registry - and in any case, the MTP service isn't even running when the phone isn't connected to a PC.
With that said, you might have screwed something up when you had such access. For example, if you deleted or renamed the Pictures folder, that would break things. However, I don't think that's the problem. I think your phone has a hardware issue with its internal Flash storage. The key evidence of this is the failure of the hard reset. GDR3 (it's not really a "preview"; it's the release bits, just only the MS portion rather than the combined "retail" update that also has Samsung firmware updates in it) didn't "brick" your phone. I'm afraid it's almost certainly just a case of defective or damaged hardware.

Uhm, Mattemoller90 over here told me this is an issue with GDR3 Preview:

I definitely did NOT delete anything from Phone or SD Card the only bad thing I did is I swapped my SD cards from Transcend 32 GB to SanDisk 64 GB that's it. Then I was trying to turn the full access off multiple times using both SamWP8 Tools and WPH Tweaks all to no avail and after one of such Turn full access off -> Restart -> Turn full access on -> Restart cycles I noticed Windows has completely stopped recognizing my phone.
The worse thing I could do is I could pulled out the USB cable from the PC without first detaching the phone programmatically when I presumably had the full access feature turned on, but that's all to it.
Who knows, possibly the NAND memory inside the phone has been damaged somehow, I don't know how.
Currently, when I am trying to flash the phone with GDR2, I get the following:
Gentlemen, I have a problem here:
When I click Start in the Flasher tool, I get the following message box:

What does this mean and what should I do? I am trying to flash from GDR3 Preview to GDR2.
I this somehow a confirmation to the fact that phone's memory is broken?
Heck, bad news then. This phone cost me near $500 in Russia...
Thank you.
Okay, the issue is resolved. The phone successfully flashed to GDR2 once I set the All option in the Flashed program and specified the XEH CSC code (which was the code my phone has had before it started to do quirky things).
Thank you everybody for your support.

[Q] Recovery?

This is probably a lost cause, but maybe there's a glimmer of hope. I just unlocked my bootloader and realized that my phone has been wiped. I'm pretty tired which is part of the reason why I made the mistake of unlocking it without backing up my files. Is there anyway to recovery any of my old pictures or files that were on the phone previously? I'm not one to make backups frequently (last was Nov), which was when I was starting to attempt this process., but I will definitely make them frequent from now on. I was hoping I might be able to use a program like recuva, but since the phone isn't detected as a drive letter I can't.
tldr - Unlocked bootloader, forgot to make backup. Is there a way to recover anything?
First rule of data recovery: stop using the device, NOW.
Doesn't matter if it's your only smartphone or not and is a necessity, every moment it's on means another moment that data can (and probably has been) overwritten by new data and is never going to be recovered.
Having said that, the "drive" meaning the internal storage should still show up as a drive letter and accessible in Windows, and it should show up as accessible under Linux or even OSX as well since it was wiped and is now basically ready to be used (given that the old data is probably there but the file allocation or journal entries for the data were cleared out). All that happens when you unlock the bootloader is the device forces into a full factory reset so when that's done, you're left with a clean fresh installation of the OS with no personal data on it (which you already understand, of course, hence your post/thread) but the phone SHOULD be working normally at that point; there's no reason if it's working properly that you wouldn't see a drive letter when it's attached to your computer - I'm guessing it's a PC since you mentioned Recuva which is a Windows-only application.
As long as you have the necessary drivers installed (HTC Sync installs them, then you can remove HTC Sync and the drivers will remain as a separate Add/Remove Programs entry), the phone should show up like any other device attached to the PC.
If it's not showing up as a drive letter then something else is wrong.
If it does show up (and again, the longer the phone is on the higher the chance important data of any kind will get overwritten) then you can use one of the following:
- TestDisk which is a completely free data recovery application that shouldn't have issues finding data on the internal storage if it's still there - I personally have used this data recovery software with pretty much perfect success in the past for accidental wipes of data on Android devices; I make no promises, just offering the suggestion
- EaseUS MobiSaver for Android is a somewhat newer product and it claims to be completely free (some data recovery software will find data but then charge you to actually do the recovery process) but I can't say for certain if that's the actual case. It claims to be able to recover data so, if it's free then it can't hurt I suppose
Just realize again that the longer the device is powered on the higher the chance that data is being damaged if it's sitting there on the internal storage so, pick one of those applications, give it a run and see what happens.
Good luck...
Thanks, I'll have to look into those a bit later. I shut the phone off within a short amount of time after the wipe, unfortunately that was probably longer than it should've been on. I'm going to switch to another phone for the time being and leave the M7 off. I could access it, but it isn't assigned a letter and instead shows up as a device, i'm guessing that's because it's internal storage. I did find another method, but i'll try those first.
