Need ROM Recommendation - Xiaomi Redmi 4X Questions & Answers

Hi all,
Been using LOS in my 4X since I brought it and it has been great and now on 16.0, however it looks like development has stopped now so I'm after a replacement. So I have two questions:
1. I need something close to LOS, don't need a lot of fancy stuff just something that is stable, current, good battery life and gets regular updates.
2. Is it possible to do a nandroid backup of my present ROM, install another ROM to try it out and then restore if I don't like the new ROM. If so, what items do I select to backup in the nandroid backup (system, data, boot, etc.)
TIA
Greg

I dont know if this suite you, I'm using Descendant X and pixysos 2.4 on my 2 device redmi 4x without facing any problem

What's the problem with the original ROM?

HI,
it's my first post here, i've bought a xiaomi x4, 4gb ram version, and i'm wondering which Operating System should i use in my phone; i come fom an iphone 4s so i'm glad to have the opportunity to install an open-source SO. I see lots of costum roms and really great stuff but i use the phone just for the browsing, e-mails, messages and phone calls so the phone has to be fast and stable; Reading around shows me that costum rom means "eventual problem with stability and functions...crashes.." and so i'm questioning myself, what's the problem with the official xiaomi global rom? does it have logger or something? and maybe it's possible to install a fresh standard version of an android open os or it has to be "coded" or "ported" for my xiaomi hardware?
Thanks in advance for any answer
Official MIUI is full of bloatware: China apps, useless Google apps, Facebook and MS office preinstalled and such. For your need, I recommend trying Resurrection Remix 7.1.2 if you like the look and cleaned from any xiaomi apps, else try xiaomi.eu MIUI ROM, or MIUIpro rom for unbloated software with good performance and battery life. without sacrificing features.

Not really. Try to get used to one. I'd recommend miuipro or xiaomi.eu rom if you want to stick to MIUI. If you want to try AOSP Nougat, I highly recommend official Resurrection Remix 7.1.2. On Oreo, I dont know, you could try Pixel Experience or Nitrogen. But I recommend sticking to Nougat, either MIUI or AOSP.
ok i understand! i think i'll gonna try miui rom.eu and Kernel Clarity, they seems interesting! and for AOSP did you mean This?
Well if you are just a casual user, i would recommend you to stay with the latest official miui rom. Its the most stable, fast and snappy rom for this device. Its ui is similar to iOS.
As Far as bloatware is concerned, if you can unlock its bootloader, boot(not flash) twrp through pc, flash magisk and then uninstall all bloatware.
Else just put them all in one folder and cut off background data for them.
I personally won't recommend you to flash custom rom unless you want to taste pure Android ui because custom roms are not as refined as official roms.
Rest is upto you!

this seems to me a wise advice! thank you! but what about just the kernel, it's the same argument? i think i'll start with your solution, baby steps!

yes and no. If a custom kernel is providing you a feature which is very essential for your usage(like fast charging or something), you can go ahead. Else there is no problem with stock one.
Another thing is stock kernel is GENERALLY safe from technical viewpoint. Custom kernels may/may not be safe because some of them just experiment with the device's voltage and other essential values which were earlier optimised scientifically. Flashing those may not be safe at all. So do your research really really well before flashing anything custom coz they might damage your device (that's rare, but still!)

Also, whether you step into this flashing world or not, never forget to backup your stock system, boot, efs and recovery. I have had experiences where my device just got dead without any reason. And that too without tampering anything. Everything stock with no flashing and locked bootloader.
Try AOSP ROM for pure android experience. (I'm using AOSP Extended with Oreo 8.1, work like a charm!)
finally my phone has arrived and i figured out that i bought a redmi NOTE 4x...to which section do i refer on this forum? the redmi note 4 or redmi 4x?
By the way i have a miui global 9.5 and i like it, very fast and smart! i don't see "chinese bloatware", what did you mean exactly?

Custom rom

Please can anyone tell me which is the best stable andriod oreo rom for redmi 4x i want a custom rom which has best battery backup....i want to flash it for my phone
You may want to try dot OS 2.5 Oreo it is good in terms of battery backup and known for its good UI.
There's havoc OS also available but final build has random reboot issue.
There's probably some other roms available in terms of good battery life. Just check them on YouTube.
Flashing custom kernel should give good battery backup.

No, it won't get bricked. Redmi 4X does not have anti-rollback protection.
it won't get hard bricked.

Try different roms on your own to clear confusion.
Many roms has good backup and stable.
I've already mentioned dot OS has good battery backup.
All users have their own different usage so battery backup is going to vary.
Search on YouTube for its battery performance and other features there are several reviews about different roms.
Until you are not going to try you are going to be in forever confusion.

Most stable ROM as today.

Hello, guys! Right now I'd like to be able to use Gcam and with MIUI this isn't possible, so I'd like to have recommendations about roms.
I have tried a few ones, but they always have problems. Battery, deep sleep, sd card problems, etc.
So... In your opinion and experience which one would be the best AOSP ROM as today? If possible.... without even a single bug.
My device is a Redmi Note 4x Snapdragon. I have TWRP and root with magisk.
I use mobile data, bluetooth with my car, sd card and I'd like to have a fast fingerprint sensor.
Thank you in advance.
Official LOS 16.0 - can't go wrong.
Bro.. You're in the wrong place.
Try Havoc OS, one of the best ROM I've used till date

Looking for a *stable* ROM

Hey guys!
I'm a very recent owner of Mi 9T Pro (less than 24h remaining until unlock becomes available). I'm also a recent consumer (if that's the right word for it) in the custom ROM scene. About a week ago I decided to check out LineageOS 16.0 on my old (Android 4.4.2) phone, and I was blown away by the performance improvement. It really gave my old device a second wind.
So when it comes to my new Mi 9T Pro, the long term strategy is almost certainly to install the official version of LineageOS 17.0 as soon as it becomes available (if at all and boy do I hope it does). However, since the official release might be (as I understand) several months away, it leaves me with a time window to use some other ROM until then. I've checked out LineageOS 16, 17, HavocOS 2.8, 3.0 & Pixel Experience ROM threads in this forum. It appears they all have some or other issues.
And this is where I was hoping to get a suggestion from you guys. What I'm interested in is the most stable ROM currently available for this phone. To be more clear, I'll illustrate what I mean by "stable":
1) Novelty not required.
It doesn't have to be Android 10 necessarily. Stability > novelty.
2) Most commonly used features take precedence.
I would certainly prefer a lag-less UI and no issues with signal reception over working NFC and Bluetooth audio (all 4 issues seem to appear with some regularity in mentioned threads).
Well, that's basically it, I hope you get the gist of it. If not I'll be glad to clarify further.
Just to be clear, I'm really not looking for a perfect solution where there is none. Just the least painful one. MIUI is not an option.
Thank you!
P.S. Sorry if this is a dup. I only managed to find a handful of outdated questions (~2 months old) which had very little engagement to begin with.
I use crDroid 5.8 (5.9 build does not work with global fw &vendor) and all the android 10 ROMs besides LOS 17 have broken NFC and BT .. And los 17 is also not perfect. Slows down after a while. We just have to wait till every K20 Pro / Mi 9T Pro version gets stable MIUI 11. Right now android 10 is not daily drive ready.
I'm using Résurrection Remix with the same build for over 2 month (the last one), and i dont have any bug.
I'm dtarting to have some troubleshootings after 2-3 weeks and it only require to restart to get fixed.
Also i'm not a big user of the phone so at the end of the day there is 70% battery left!

First of all, thank you for your input!
But what about Android 9 based ROMs like LOS16, Havoc-OS 2.8, Pixel Experience etc.? Wouldn't they be more stable based on the fact that Android 9 was already out (for quite some time) when K20 Pro was released? And also because the developers have simply had more time to iron out the issues?

I have basically tried every rom there is on this forum, and multiple vendors, roms later, i can suggest that EvolutionX, Pixel experience plus (pie are both pretty stable. But they have minor issues. Definitely daily driver material.
But! in my suggestion, if you could stick to a debloated MIUI. It would be hassle free.
Pros for using the stock rom.
Fingerprint sensor works faster
Doesn't break safetynet, so.. google pay support.
widevine L1 in other cases.
And most importantly, the camera functionality doesnt break

Thank you very much for your (somewhat unexpected) suggestion!
To be honest, I hadn't really considered debloating, but I will most certainly look into it. Are there some preferred debloating solutions out there?

Follow the steps in the Removing Bloatwares in Locked/Unlocked Bootloader part of the first post in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/how-to/redmi-k20-pro-firmware-10-3-8-0-9-6-13-t3939647
True, MIUI has way faster and better fingerprint recognition than all custom roms. Sadly I hate MIUI look and feel...
If you want to give MIUI a try, install the xiaomi eu ROM, which is pretty clean and without much preinstalled stuff.
Best is not to use the custom ROMs with ALL the features, since those ROMs are more laggy and buggy.
So if custom ROMs, try android 9 based. I will flash android 10 again only after 2-3 builds which use MIUI 11 firmware and vendor, since I do have a global K20 Pro/ Mi 9T Pro and don't want to lose DRM L1 or NFC by flashing IN or CN fw and vendor. Because most android 10 ROMs require MIUI 10 android 10 fw and vendor (and there is no global MIUI 10 android 10 fw & vendor)
So depends after all, how much you hate MIUI.
I flashed a custom ROM because of the following things
clean stock UI
no gapps
better everyday performance

So.. my process is..
1- unlock bootloader
2-flash recovery (orangefox or twrp)
3- boot into revovery
4-wipe system
5- flash vendor
6- flash rom (gapps if necessary)
7- wipe cache

I guess so.. and sorry brother.. i dont use telegram..
I'd suggest you stick to global vendor..
If it doesn't work, then try chinese..
Widevine is not an issue for me.. but you might stream HD content.. so.. look into it..
And i forgot to mention... Always format data before rebooting.. format data is different from wipe data.. keep that in mind..
You should stick to the process.. it should go flawlessly..

Full guide on how to install custom recovery plus custom rom

Hello there, i am using redmi note 9/10x 4g currently on miui 13 Android 12 and I wanted to install a custom rom in it.. so anyone could please give me a full guide on start to end.. i have already unlocked my bootloader and k want to install a custom recovery and after that a custom rom.. so please someone give me a full guide for this miui version..
Thanks in advance..
First of all, it depends on what ROM you would like to use. I use Project Elixir which is based on Pixel Experience. The maintainer is no longer active so you rely on yourself. The newest 3.4 version requires MIUI 12.5.4 Global (or EEA if you end up with a soft brick) as it's based on the R vendor rather than the S vendor. You can find all other information either on the GitHub or Telegram group. (Yes, feels weird to use Telegram) Here's the quick guide https://github.com/ProjectElixir-Devices/Wiki/blob/tiramisu/merlinx.md
Redmi Note 9 has a codename merlinx in this case as there's already a Motorola phone with a codename merlin and many people were fooled and got their phones hard bricked. Since this is a MediaTek chipset, you don't have any A/B partitions. If you don't follow the guide or flash the required firmware, you will end up with a beautiful error, maybe even a permanent one. The easiest way for me to flash the ROM from the crdroid recovery was the ADB Sideload method as my SD Card wasn't picked up by the recovery. Make sure you have a reliable USB connection that won't get interrupted during the update. You may find a lot of missing stuff and glitches in the ROM like purple battery indicator when in landscape mode, random freezes, a stock battery widget is broken (Android 13 build issue in general) and so more. There's no custom battery indicator when charging on a full shutdown. You will have a default MIUI one.
