I nearly bought this phone tonight before T-Mobile decided to charge me full price. I decided ebay might be a better place to buy one instead of paying 500 dollars for an iphone wannabe. It looks like a nice phone. I really like the wifi feature. I intend to use the wifi in my home as I already have wifi though out the house in use with my wifes computer and my PS3. It seemed like it would fit nice. I want to be able to surf the internet and maybe use google maps and google talk via the phone and wifi. I assume that can be done. After reading a few reviews though I put a screeching halt on my ebay bids. The phone seems to suffer from serious memory issues. Every negative review dealt with the memory or lock ups which I assume were also memory related. It appears the phone ships with a slow processor and not enough memory. I have no problems with buys a microSD card in the 2 to 4 gig range if that will solve the memory issues. I intended on buying one anyway for the application storage. Will the additional memory solve the issues with the phone? Are there updates to the phone that will correct these issues possible since many of the reviews were written? Are there currently SAFE work arounds that would correct the memory issues? I am no stranger to fooling around with this type of thing but at 300 dollars and considering that I am buying on ebay, I'm affraid i wont be in a position to gamble with the phone. If made the purchase through T-mobile I could possibly return the phone but ebay is another matter. Many of the sales are final. I dont want this phone if it requires flashing Rom's or extensive worj arounds to get the phone working.
So I will rely on your opinions on whether or not to make this purchase. If not this phone..what phone? I use t-mobile and dont want an unlocked phone so it would need to be one of their available products. I hear the MDA isnt bad. I really like the idea of a windows mobile OS as it would allow me to put darn near any app on the phone I want to. I want WIFI. I want to be able to use google talk and google maps on the phone and I really like the idea of surfing the web for free on my couch useing full functioning browsers not those mobile editions. Any recomendations if not the Hearld/Wing? Can I get the Wing to work properly and not freeze, hang up, lock up, or require constant reboots?
Point Blank you will have to change the rom on the wing in order to get some performance out of it, I switched from the MDA and the first day I got the wing I wanted my MDA back, but after changing the rom I forgot all about my big fat MDA even though The MDA has a 1250mAh battery and the wing just has a 1130mAh Batt.
If you do not want to do a rom upgraded you can take a shot at the Shadow, which has twice has much built in Memory and Storage, but its just a smartphone not a full PPC ................
also the MDA has been Dis-continued so if you buy one it will be a re-furb.
on second thought, You might just have to change the paging pool size and that should free up some Memory. and its too easy to do, and you can also delete and uninstall some files and programs you have no need for
I saw a few articles about both the rom and the page file. In your opinion, is changing the rom a wise thing to do with little to no support? I know that rom updates are risky, but on computers for example, its such a slick and easy process that there is little to no risk. Would a rom update on the wing be a wise thing to do? Is the available rom from a reputable sourse or is this something "Cody the 12 year old" made? I really want to make this wing my next phone but I dont want a 400 dollar PDA/cell phone that does neither correctly.

Hi,
I have not created my own rom, but have recooked a few version of the Touch-IT v2.3 wing by itje. Recooking a rom is a long process, creating a rom would take even longer.
I've flashed my wing over 80 times now during testing new roms and recooking.
I've bricked the phone a lot of times in the process but with the orignal ruu, its no big deal.
I'm pretty sure itje and other fine rom cookers in this forum are not 12 year olds.
If you want to buy the wing then buy it and tjem read the forum and learn how to flash new roms and change page pool size.
If you want a faster and more powerful phone then buy the Kaiser.
Thanks for reading.
funny you should mention the Kaiser. I just finished reading up on that one. Thats a serious phone. It's way more phone and money then I am prepared to pony up. Is this the next best option for me?
I didnt mean any offense on the 12 year old statement. I certainly wasnt refering to anyone in particular or members of this board. I was mearly trying to imply unproven rom techniques. It sounds like there is well tested processess probably on this board for flashing the rom. It will likely be a safe process for me.
Would there be another recomendation for T-mobile if not the Kaiser or the Wing?
T-mo currently has 3 windows based devices listed which are the Wing, The Dash and The shadow, both the Dash and the shadow are smartphones and not PPC .................. since you dont want to have to unlock another device to be able to use it, I would recomend that you get the wing and while its being shipped to you read this thread about changing the Paging Pool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324955
When you get the phone try give the 4mb Paging pool a test (thats what I use)
and if you still do not like it or just want to see how much better it is try a Rom upgraded I recomend Touch-IT wing 2.3 cooked by itje and he is not the 12 yr old that beat you in online gaming ................ you can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340403
The installation is VERY VERY easy, but make sure to read the instruction in the folder and if you skip a line you will brick your phone ......................... but if you do brick your phone its pretty simple to unbrick, just re-flash the official rom .................... I can't seem to find that link (or too tired to look) but if someone can post it please do, If i come home tomorrow and no one has posted a link I will upload it for you
great info. phone purchased and ill be sure to give those tips a go. thanks

Just a note. Make sure you read and then RE-READ the instructions provided with every rom. And its also a good thing to get the T-Mobile official RUU as once the phone is bricked, this is the only rom that will unbrick it. I don't want to scare you because it's actually a very easy process. I have flashed itje's rom to several of my co-workers (were all T-Mobile employees) with no unrecoverable issues.
First of all Hello everyone, I'm Luke and I'm pretty new to the windows mobile scene.
I've wanted a windows mobile phone for a few years now however price tags were not so appealing to me, but now I've purchased my first windows phone and it should be arriving tomorrow or within the next few days. It also seems that I've bought one at a good time as I'm happy to see a lot of development going on for 6.1/6.5 which is awesome - I like playing around with gadgets more than actually using them.
But here is the catch, whilst I've posted this in the HTC TD2 section here, the phone I've bought isn't actually a TD2. At least not an official one. It's one of the Chinese models found on eBay. I don't want a moral debate going on here - it was a bargain and it's my first step into using a Windows phone which I'm looking forward to for a decent price. It looks like a TD2 and the seller has claimed it is 'OEM Produce' however I don't believe him really.
What I wanted to ask was how will I go about flashing, updating, installing ROM's and the such on this phone? Will it be more than enough to follow instructions for a standard TD2? I hope someone here who understands hardware device and such will be able to clear that up for me.
The phone is using the same processor as the original TD2, and has the same resolution etc. Not sure if it has the same amount of ROM/RAM however it's being shipped with WM 6.1 so it has enough I presume. Are there any other hardware differences that will effect the ROM's I can use? Can I even use the same ROM's you guys are using? I don't care about the lower quality camera and less important things like that.
Thanks for any advice (sorry it was a bit long winded)
Please scroll down to see my most recent post! Thanks!
Thats is a very tricky question you are asking here.
First of all, nothing is certain or guaranteed of what you might receive there. After all, the product you receive will be a counterfeit phone, a fake trying to mock a real TD2. And as with any fake products you get the same quality issues. How do you know for sure that it has the same processor?? Just because they write it there? The same can apply to the RAM, ROM, Display etc.! It is in my opinion HIGHLY unlikely that the phone you will receive, will have anything in common (technology-wise) with the real TD2. The TD2 combines a lot of recent technology like that hd screen, cam and ram. What you will find underneath of yours might be a mash-up of older HTC phones like the Diamond or even older..who knows!? You can continue this uncertainty with the Windows that phone is running...it will be some homecooked release that is made to work with the components the phone features. As they will be different to TD2 as we have clarified earlier, the ROMs available here will most certainly not work ideally with yours....and i would be highly surprised to see a forum that will be dedicated to a fake TD2 lolz. Anyways, I think you get my point...I dont really see why you would ship yourself a chinese mock-up to start with a Windows Mobile phone...I dont, really. There are so many nice cheap hq HTC phones out there that still support 6.5 to-date. I have been using a HTC Excalibur (S620/621/Dash) for like 4 years and kept buying the same phone since then because i LOVE it. The quality is superb and it runs Windows Mobile 6.5 like a charm. You can pickup a brandnew unlocked one for $100 at the bay. Just a week ago i decided to upgrade and bought a new TD2...not here yet but same as you i am very excited Im sorry that i drifted off into a moral debate by the way
If you really want to embark on trying to update your phone you will have to analyze the rom closely to see what phone's ROM it is actually running. This will help you to find the according forum in here.
Good luck
I concur with vivid22, The internals of your phone will certainly be different to those of the original HTC build and as such you may have many unforseen troubles if you do flash the rom.
But if you decide to proceed with a rom flash i would be very interested to hear of your results.
You may also be interested in using some benchmark software and comparing how your phone performs compared to ours, maybe you can discover if the CPU is indeed the correct performance. Its all quite interesting.
Oh and welcome to the forums
Thanks for your responses guys! Very informative.
While I'm not going to respond to the most obvious statements like it being a counterfeit and it sucking etc in much detail because of course you are right! but I knew this when I bought it. The price is the real difference here and I don't mind if I can't flash it but I too am interested if it will actually work .
I'm still waiting for the phone to arrive and yes you both are right it has a very high chance that it is using different internals and I expect this, however the seller seems to state its using very similar hardware.
I will be more than happy to mess around with it, I guess I will dump the ROM first if I can then try installing some 6.5 etc - no problem trying I guess. I must say I've seen some clones from merimobiles.com (or something) with TouchFlo and I think even WinMo 6.5 but then again obtaining those ROM's will be a quest in itself. Not sure if mine is being shipped with TouchFlo, it has it in the screen shots on the listening but that really counts for nothing .
I have seen a few threads on these devices and their flash capability but not any with any definitive results so hopefully I can get the ball rolling. When I actually receive my product I will be able to tell if it is actually using the same processor, etc.
I believe you will find that Hard SPL will not flash to unlock your device.
Many here have tried with the same knock-offs.
Unlock in which way do you mean?
Network unlock? (assuming not)
Maybe worth noting: The guy who is selling these flashes the phone with the version of WinMo (language-wise) that the buyer asks for before shipping out. Meaning they can be flashed, however with what ROM's and what method I've no idea. Might ask him?
Ok if I'm going to poke around this I have two questions to ask that will help me determine things about the phone:
(They may seem very dumb but I just need to clarify)
1. Is there a way to find out the Hard SPL version without installing a new one? Like the current one it has.
2. Is it possible to get into the Bootloader no matter what Hard SPL version you have?

No, SPL unlocks the OS, not the SIM.
Bootloader mode is how you determine your current SPL.
Okay. So I should be able to (hopefully) get into bootloader and find the SPL it currently has.
Well I guess thats it until I actually recieve the phone, cheers guys I'll post how I get on for the people who are interested.
It will be very interesting to hear about it. hope you get what you ordered?
God luck
Well, I'm back, for anyone who is interested!
Phone finally came, snow over here in the UK slowed it down haha!
So, the phone is very good for what I paid, and very nice.
I'd like to go about flashing it though, as it's currently running 6.1 with SPB Mobile Shell. SPB is very nice, but I really like the look of Touch Flo.
Now while cosmetically the phone looks pretty close to the TD2, it has a few things like no front camera (don't really care) and the zoom bar also seems to do absolutely nothing. The phone runs as smooth as it should. It has no g-sensor as far as I can tell, shame but doesn't really matter.
All of this sounds like it has no chance, I think it even has less RAM than it was meant to but I'm not sure... But here is why I am still curious about trying:
Windows Mobile is reporting that it is using the 528Mhz MSM7200A processor.
That is what I believe the real TD2 uses, correct me if I am wrong.
If this means it is using the same chipset or what-have you as the TD2, I don't know. This is why I need help.
Really, what I am asking, is what kind of things can I look at in the phone to tell what I could possibly flash it with?
Do you think the HardSPL utility you all use will work with it? Is there even any way to tell, or should I just try anyway? And could that break the phone beyond repair? Is there a way to find out the real specs of this phone, because it may have been modified so that it read that processor name?
What do you guys think. I'm willing to try all sorts, I just don't want to brick it with no way of getting it back that's why I am just asking for opinions before I do it anyway.
Thanks
You will brick your phone for sure if you try a rom for Diamond2, search this forum for chinese ROM (I saw it somewhere on another thread in Topaz section), but watch out that you will have a clean windows without customizations includind TF3D.
Hello folks, I know ill have no problems flashing the phone to a new rom (not worried about bricking it) but one thing after searching these forums I havnt found is how hard is it to go back to stock if you dont like said rom
I dont even know why I am flashing it, my phone works great, seems snappy enough but im one of those types of people that just has to toy with things.
So id just like some information for you guys first what i asked above but also why do you use custom roms does the phone work better, all I read about is apps not working? is there an added benefit to flashing?
Most important to me though is how hard and the steps to revert back to stock
Thanks alot

Well, all you need to do is download the stock RUU which will return your phone to it's original factory settings. There have been a few people who've encountered an error running this utility to retorn to stock but it has been very rare and has only affected a small percentage of the population of hero owners. Worse-case scenario, you can try and get a warranty replacement or use your TEP plan if you are enrolled in it.
I find I enjoy the phone more with a custom rom for several reasons. It feels more responsive and usable, also I am a true gadget-head and tweaking customizing and playing around with my phone is just in my nature. Android as a platform is well suited to this kind of mentality and is even encouraged.
Of course there is also the current situation we are in that we are able to run a newer version of android than what is available from the manufacturer at this time.
Then you can get into custom themes etc etc.
Hi all. Just got this phone (LG Optimus 2X) a few days ago but after reading all the mixed reviews on it and the problems people are having with it I'm not sure if it's a good one to have. The constant crashing of some of the apps is the first thing I noticed. Then the shockingly short battery life (just over 13 hours on a full charge WITHOUT using the phone at all, brightness all the way down, fewer apps)... This is my first "smart phone" ever and I don't know anything about stuff like ROM,flashing,rooting... which means I can't mess with the phone at this point. I was looking at the Samsung Galaxy S II T989 AWS+850 3G, S II 727 skyrocket or S II AWS and I'm wondering if they're better phones. I'm with Windmobile (Canada) and running Android 2.2. I only have a couple of days to make a decision (keep it or exchange it for something different). Any advice?
To be fair to LG, they make decent hardware but their software are like s**t!
Anyway, the very least... Root... Custom Kernel... if you not comfortable with custom rom, then you can skip custom rom first.
At this point, I feel any other phone is better than 2x... Simply because Nvidia and LG are not working well together.
If you still have the chance, I'd recommend you to just send it back and get a better phone. The phone's hardware is decent (not the best), but LG's and Nvidia's support just doesn't cut it.
If you consider the S2 as an option, you'd just better go with it.
Thank you guys for the replies. It's becoming obvious to me the Samsung S2 is a better phone -although not by much- but the thing is, with the LG I didn't have to pay anything while the Samsung is going to cost a couple hundred or so (cant remember exactly) and I don't know if it's worth it for me since I'm not really crazy about having the best smart phones out there. I'm thinking if the LG can at least be reliable I'm ok with it. Like I said, I don't know anything about all these mods you can do to your phone but do they really make a difference?
Also, I tried to update to 2.3 but kept getting "phone has latest version..." message although it's running 2.2 currently.
Install the latest ginger bread. 20Q. its excellent compared with original stock. though you have to root it...

For the first part - I beg to differ. Our phone just got to the point when we can say that it is a good phone, with good software. Using latest official 20q or better yet, customized versions. And there is CM also.
Yes, battery can last enough with everything working just fine, with some updating or flashing various upgrades.
But it took us almost a year to get here. Because nVidia screwed us with not being involved at all, on that we all agree.
We have bought several ones as early adaptors but we have a lot of problems or had in the past... There are a lot of better phones out there it's a relieve to say goodbye after a year of use.
The latest great thing is the phone shutdown after a message saying almost empty battery lol and after a restart the percentage is 65% Most buggy software and a gingerbread update based on the froyo kernel...
Sent from my new discovered phone huh... via Tapatalk
Thanks again for the replies and sharing your opinions.
Supupa, the problem is I have no clue what "rooting", "flashing", "CM".... mean or how it's done. I'm sure with time and some reading and asking I'll be able to learn some of that stuff. The first thing I tried to do was to update the Android version to 2.3 but for whatever reason it didn't want to. I'm mostly concerned about the appalling battery life. A mere 14 hours on a full charge with no use (of the phone) is unacceptable no matter how good a phone is. I am going to take a second look at the Galaxy S II tomorrow and see if I can live with the cheap build.
I don't know, but to me a smart phone with bugs can't be that smart.
I would not buy it again. The hardware is very good, but the software is crap.
Best thing you can do right now is to:
1. download latest firmware: http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/swdata/WEBSW/LGP990/AITADW/V20q_00/V20Q_00.kdz (found here)
2. follow one of the guides for flashing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327929
This will update everything so you don't have to bother with baseband and RIL right now. And give it a try. If it runs good enough keep it and/or customize it, if not, well...
edit: but wait! Isn't that really LG G2x or P-999 in Wind mobile? If it is, youre in the wrong forum (G2x is here) and that update will make a mess. It's not the same phone although it looks identical. Go to settings > about phone, scroll down and see what it says there. Or make a screenshot and attach it here.

I agree with Dac0908,
The phone's hardware is good, the software is ****.
And now the developers @ XDA Have so much good ROMS and now even ICS for us to say that it is a good phone again.
And the battery performance can be increased at a huge rate with a different kernel.
My phone's battery record of staying alive is 86 hours, just saying!

Thanks, Dac. My phone is the P999 actually. Anyway, I have to return the phone tomorrow because I think it's defective. I've only had it for a few days and only 4 minutes of talk time but the phone keeps disconnecting itself from service and keeps displaying the message "Emergency only". I've talked to the technical support 3 times already and went one time to the store where I bought but only a few hours after we "fix" the problem it comes back and I lose connection. The phone also kept switching between Wind Home and Wind Away on its own even though I was sitting at home. I was watching Youtube and suddenly the screen went completely black and I had to shut the phone off to get the screen to work again. I have no doubt this particular phone is DEFECTIVE. Very bad start. My Sony Ericsson 580 has been working without a glitch whatsoever since I bought it in Feb '08 and the battery still gives me the same exact time it did when it was brand new.
I don't know if I'll be having the same problems if I get another similar LG 2X. I like the phone but the problems I'm having with mine and what I've learned about this phone in the past few days make me wanna steer away from it now. I really want to give the LG O2X a try but I don't know.
Tough luck, can happen to any brand or model
Well it's not a bad phone. Most of software glitches are fixed now, community is strong, and for that price I don't think you can get something better. I'm talking about market prices, not subsidized by carriers of course.
S2 is in higher price class: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_r_vs_lg_optimus_2x-review-713.php but it's a free world... well, sort of.
Thanks, Dac. Yeah I know. It's electronics. Didn't get a chance to go to the store today. I'll go tomorrow and decide if I'm going to keep this phone or get a Samsung. If I keep it and figure out how to do all the things that can be done to make it a better phone I hope it would be reliable for at least a couple of years.
LG optimus 2X was the cheepest dual core high-end phone I could find on a second hand market in my country. Of course I flashed CM7 (I'm on a Temasek's latest KANG) and my phone is rock stable and very fast. I'm using ADW EX launcher btw. I can only sugest to the OP to invest some time in exploring how to get ROOT and how to flash custom rom because that will be usefull regardless of which android phone you have. It is actually very hard to truly "brick" your phone, I've had a broken connection wih a PC in the middle of flashing a custom rom with ODIN on my old Samsung Spica because of bad drivers and I still managed to get my phone working easily

Man!! It keeps getting more and more complicated. I have no idea what "bricking" is, ADW launcher,... So many things that I don't know anything about.
Looks like the only other decent phone I can get on Windtab is the Samsung Nexus. It's $250 while the LG is free. I'm assuming the Nexus is better than the LG but It looks ugly with that stupid curve and it feels really cheap. So, I don't know. I'm still deciding, but is the Nexus worth the money?
I was sorta in the same boat as you last week, (choosing between the Galaxy S, P990 and the Galaxy S2.).
1. The Galaxy S (with flashed rom and kernel) was already an awesome phone which could do anything you wanted, and during my short usage I found the P990 either equal (smoothness, gps fix speed) or even better (camera, wifi/3g connection strength, HDMI without $50 cable).
2. Flashing (= installing) new and better software is a piece of cake for this phone. Now I know you're new so it might not look as a piece of cake to you, but in physical steps it boils down to:
How to Root your phone. (= Give yourself full access to the phone)
1. Install software "LG United Mobile Driver 3.6" (use google) on pc.
2. Install software "SuperOneClick" (use google) on pc.
3. Connect phone to pc, then click "Root" in "SuperOneClick"
Done
How to Install custom firmware/rom/kernel
Assuming you have an external microSD card inserted.
1. Install CWM Recovery
Go to android market (on phone) and download ROM Manager. In ROM Manager choose "install/flash ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery
2. Download any new ROM you wish to install from this forum and put it anywhere on the phone.
3. Enter CWM Recovery mode
(When the phone is off: hold Volume Down and Power buttons. The white LG logo will come up, keep holding. Let go when the LG logo suddenly gets a blue background. Note: If you hold these buttons without succesfully installing CWM (step 1), then you will factory reset your phone and it will reboot again.
The following steps are covered in every thread on ROMs, every rom maker includes instructions on how to flash (=install) their ROMs. Yet in about 9.9 of 10 cases it boils down to:
4. In CWM Recovery, go to "Backup and Restore", and make a Nandroid backup. (You need an external microSD for this).
Move the cursor in CWM Recovery with the volume buttons and enter with the power key.
5. Do a factory reset. (Wipe Data, Wipe Cache)
Yes this will wipe your apps, appdata, messages and contacts so have that backed up if you want, but since you have a new phone, you won't have anything to save. It will not delete anything that wasn't in the Data folder, such as photo's/music.
6. Then go to "Install ZIP from SD card". Browse to the downloaded ROM (step 2), select it. It will install, will take about 1 minute. That's it. Reboot.
You can choose from ROMs based on official LG android, or totally rebuilt from scratch such as CyanogenMod (CM7), or based on CM7. ROMs with a CM7 base will look significantly different from stock roms, and subjectively I'd say these are the better roms to look at as they've been more developed. You can find CM7 roms because they have the [CM7] tag in the thread title in the Optimus 2X Development forum.
Now read more guides on how to do it (because I may have forgotten something), I just wanted to give you a basic overview of what's waiting for you. Enjoy!
As per what you pay, its the best

Hey guys,
I think it's great that you're trying to help our friend Electroman here... but please keep one thing in mind, the ROMs in this section are for P990. Electroman, if you try to flash your P999 with a ROM for P990 you will risk bricking your phone. (Bricking your phone is basically turning your phone into a brick... or paper weight) So please proceed with caution.

Yea my rom in no way could make that happen. If theres not even any logo either its just plain dead or you flashed something in the wrong partition which for it to be that messed up would probably have been something important like the bootloader. My roms do not touch partitions like that at all doesnt even mount them or anything. Sorry your phone died, at least now you have a good excuse to upgrade from this ancient slow phone? lol. good luck!
Sounds like your battery is fried Thats one of the reasons i left this phone ages ago lol.
