[Q] Screen wake notification - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Greetings,
Problem with my SM-N960U1. Last week I had to factory reset my phone. Also got a security update. Since then, When I get a SMS or email notifications, my screen does not wake up. It always has before. I get the sound & LED flashing but no screen wake up. I have wiped the cache partition, tried in safe mode with no success. Any ideas?

Thanks for the response. I tried that & it is already set correctly. This is also happening with the gmail & yahoo email apps. Nothing but incoming phone calls is waking the screen.

I always looked for a way to disable screen waking so can't help much if that didn't solve it for you :/
Maybe try this: https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5...cations-not-waking-up-screen/m-p/982962#M1807
I've used the app Glimpse on my S3 Mini years ago and it used to work, no clue if it works on new devices but worth the try.

It's just frustrating as it worked fine up until last week. Just checked the Note 8 I gave to my son & it works perfect.

NO vibrate when receiving SMS. Please Help! Any suggestions appreciated.

Yes I have gone to Settings->Sounds & Notifications-> Notifications tab-> Messaging: New text message. After setting that to vibrate I have soft reset many times to no avail. Is there any kind of reg edit for this? I have searched for days on this topic and noone seems to have this problem. Is there any hope?
I just did a search and it appears there are many threads similar to this one. Try a search and see if any of the other threads have your answer.
Do you mind sharing a link? Because I'm having no luck.
i've not personally searched properly, but i'm guessing that Grizzley might recomend looking here
If you're problem isn't covered by a few google searches within XDA Devs, add a few more bits on info (rom, installed cabs, did it ever, when did it stop, etc etc etc)
If it did, and now doesn't, try soft resets - if no good try removing installed cabs (and change tone, why not! just use a default one for now)
If you still cant fix it, try a hard reset (see wiki for how) and remember to backup first. if you still dont get a vibrate.... maybe you have a hardware fault... does it vibrate on phone calls? have you installed a custom rom (ffs check the entire applicable thread if you have) if so, try a different one... or a stock one.
Searching is a good start - and saying you have is better still. But there really isn't enough info to help yet (yes, silly sh*t can mess it up, if my sd card gets removed & replaced my phone decides that my txts are now silent - with no ring or vibrate - even tho the audio file is on the device.... go figure!)
Ok I tried everything....even installed new apps to help with it....nothing. And yes it does vibrate on phone calls. So I decided to hard reset. NOTHING. Just calls. Gah, it worked for a little while when my phone was brand new, and I havent even flashed a new rom. ?????

Start -> Settings -> Sounds & Notifications -> Sounds Tab -> Make sure the programs check box is checked and then check the notifications check box as well
I had the same problem too, until I looked through everything.
Hope this helps.
Do you have any programs such as phonealarm or spb phone suite installed? It could be as simple as changing the settings in one of them to vibrate for sms.

My Tilt has the same problem with emails. It will vibrate when getting a call, but not when receiving emails. I checked all the Notifications settings and made sure that Vibrate is checked but to no avail. Not having it vibrate for emails is a major bummer for me.

[Q] Not receiving MMS

So my wife and I both got Thrills the day they were released. Only a couple weeks after getting them my wife started having trouble receiving MMS's. Even with the "auto-download" setting enabled MMS's stopped auto-downloading and if she pushed download it would just say "downloading" and never download until she rebooted her phone. Mine was working fine so I didn't pay too much attention. I kinda figured it was cause she messages a hell of a lot more than me and it might be a glitch there. One day I started having the same problem so I assumed I had reached the number of MMSs that she had when she started having the problem. So I deleted all my text messages in the messaging app. So she sends me an MMS today and same thing, didn't auto-download, won't download when I click the button. I refuse to reboot my phone for everything. Anyone else having this problem? Know whats going on? Have a fix that doesn't require root or a new rom?

Had the same issue when I got my Thrill, I had to edit a setting. I forget what it was.....another thing that's stopped my MMS is having a **** load of Message in my inbox that aren't deleted.
Go t settings and set up auto delete, clear cache, & change what you please, after that report back in a day

Clear cache? In message settings? I actually deleted all my texts and still have this problem. I never set up auto delete on mine but I did my wife's. Either way it still happened to both of us. This "clear cache" sounds like a winner. I wonder if the pics get downloaded but just don't show up in the app. The next time it happens I'm gonna search the folder with ES and see if it's there.

No notification light

So the light works when charging, so that rules out a hardware issue (i also did the hardware test from the dialer and it was fine). However, I have the settings enabled and it doesn't work for anything. Tested both gmail and sms. Nothing. I do have 8sms installed and use that as my sms app, but I tried reenabling the stock prone and still nothing. Any ideas?

Happened to me too. Here's what I found....doing a master factory reset (power down phone, hold volume down and power at same time), if skipping through all the screens, not setting up any accounts, then they worked. If I was to master factory reset and setup accounts ie. mail, google, etc. rather than skipping, that's what was borking the lights. Tested 3 times to verify. So my recommendation is to master factory reset and skip through all of the setup options. Reboot phone and then go in and setup your accounts and you should be good! Let me know if the same thing happens to you.

Yup. Fixed it. Went though and did the HTC setup, but skipped adding google account or anything else (skipped dropbox just to be safe) and it works now. Now I just have to get everything just so again. Yay for me. Thanks for the help though. Someone should really make a sticky about this or PSA or something so people that do resets to fix 4.3 weirdness (like I did) don't have to go through yet another reset.

Sweet! Glad it worked for you, crazy thing is I bought the phone Saturday and it did this behavior before I even took the update. That phone did other weird things to. After the last factory reset it blew the camera! When in Zoe mode, try to take a picture and it would force close. Got fed up and exchanged for new one. The second one had no 4g period! Reprovisioned and all that good stuff, but no 4g anywhere. Went to a different store being as I was 2 for 2 so far to get another one. They verified no 4g, gave me another and all is good! Guess 3rd time was a charm, no weirdness with this one at all...bad ass phone to say the least! Glad I went back to HTC.

Notifications led not working

After updating my htc one to 4.3, my notifications led is not working. It comes on when I plug it on charge, but doesn't work for anything else. Anyone else have this problem?
Same here , red only when charging, green led not working ?

Did you guys factory reset after upgrading? Its most likely that the LED will work after a factory reset, I didn't as it all worked lovely without this time and with kit Kat round the corner I will factory reset for that upgrade. Maybe some one knows what process drives the LED that we can try clearing and force closing? might help

Yes, I actually rooted my phone, and installed 4.3 before it was even available ota, and the notification led would not work. I then went back to stock, and received the ota update, then did a factory reset, still cant get notifications to work. It seems to be affecting a minority of handsets which I find strange.

I think we may well be a minority with this problem, there's not a lot of noise on this forum the internet in general about it, it could be a combination of apps that are causing the problem, or maybe the new Do Not Disturb feature is not running properly as that shuts down the notification Led when activated.
We know a factory reset doesn't help.
Apps I have that use the notification LED other than the stock system notification are only WhatsApp and Missed Call Reminder, I am going to try uninstalling them and see if it frees the LED up, other than that I am at a loss.
I am having the same problem after recently updating to 4.3 / 5.5 (stock Scandinavian int. unlocked version) so I will be keeping an eye on this thread and any others to see what the possible solution is.
As manmikey has said, factory reset doesn't solve it - at least a regular reset and re-install. I may reset again and set it up without importing my apps, to see if one of them is screwing it up but I don't have anything out of the ordinary which accesses the LED - only stock Messaging and Gmail. I tried LightFlow, to see if that would somehow kick it back to life and override what was causing the problem by using its testing tools, but still nothing...
So yeah, must be a combination of updates and apps which knock it out. It's not a huge issue as I still have audio notifications but it is super-handy being able to glance at my phone and see if anything has arrived. Might be fixed with 4.4, who knows...

Finally got to the bottom of this problem which has been bugging me for weeks. If anyone is having problems with there notification led not working, do a factory reset. During the install process after resetting, DO NOT log into your google account and let it restore your apps and settings. Lo in once pone has fully booted up and manuallyrestore apps, bit of a pain if you have loads of apps, but the light is now working normal for messages, emails etc etc as it should

YES! Thank you so much for this! I did the reset, without restoring using my Google account and then logged in after the set up had finished. Sent a test email from another account and *BAM* the green LED flashes away. Such a nice feeling to have it back - it feels like my phone is now complete. Strange how such a small thing can make a difference to the overall user experience.
Having to reinstall and set up my apps from scratch is a small price to pay for having everything work properly.
Thanks again

No easy solution but a more info for those with this problem...
Seeing on this forum that restoring using Google back up did not cure the problem I thought I would try using HTC back up. I did a factory reset and then a restore from my HTC back up to try and get the notification lamp working. Unfortunately the Led still does not work after this so it looks like Honda1979s method is the only way
As a footnote I have now returned my HTC One (to Carphone Warehouse) for warranty repairs as the device has microphone/noise cancelling issues (another seemingly common problem of the HTC one) So I reported the LED not notifying as well, so lets see what comes back in 6 days..... I have a horrible feeling that HTC will shirk the repair and quote "moisture damage" even tho it has never been wet. watch this space

Okay still no solution but further information....
I received a replacement HTC One as the microphone issue was not repairable, the replacement device was a factory reconditioned unit with sense 5.0 & Android 4.2.2 installed. The notification LED was working when I put my sim in and subsequently after I ran HTC restore. Then I downloaded the OTA sense 5.5/4.3 update and ran it. After that update the notification LED was no longer working. At this point I am leaving it as I don't want to spend too much more of my life chasing a flashing green light, after the KitKat update I will follow Honda1979s methods and rebuild the phone from scratch and not restore from backup.
Hey guys I am the owner of a new HTC One phone
My feeling is that Swiftkey is messing up green led notification
Do you have installed Swiftkey. Because for me notification does not work after the installation of this application
Also an uninstall of it does not help. For the moment only honda solution seems working

Solved - Notification LED not working
Just to update the post....
After the OTA update to KitKat 4.4.2 I did not restore from backups but rebuilt my HTC One as a brand new device, I can confirm the green notification LED is now working again :good:
Okay having just updated OTA to sense 6 I find yet again that the notification Led has stopped working again as a result of updating. I was expecting to have to rebuild my phone from scratch as before to get the Led working. But I discovered another way to get it working whilst installing another app.
The app is "Missed Message Flasher" and when setting it up it requires turning on in the Settings/Accessibility/Services menu. Once installed and turned on the Led works as entirely as intended
I confirmed this by uninstalling the app at which point the Led stopped working again, reinstalled and the Led works again.
I have no idea why this solves it, but I hope it helps others with this frustrating issue.

So I had the same issue.tested my led in safe mode it worked fine. Downloaded the led notifier on app in market because some reported this fixed it.disabled Google hangouts and Verizon messaging still nothing.but what did work and I'm not sure if its a combination of all the steps I took but all I simply did was cycle the do not disturb button on and then off from the top pull down bar. Hope this works for you guys.

Old thread but ran into this problem a week ago on my Desire HD. Tried all kind of apps and removed all my widgets and a bunch of apps but couldn't get it fixed. I knew my LED still worked cause when I completely turned off the phone and connected it to the charger it worked. However as soon as I booted the phone the LED turned off and it only started flashing again when my battery level dropped below 14%. Notifications or charging the phone when it was on did not turn on the LED.
After I read your 'do not disturb' comment I pulled down the notification bar and noticed my quiet hours (Android 4.4.4) was switched on even though I never changed the setting (on from 11pm to 7am). Switched it off and now the light is working fine again.

[Q] SMS is near-unusable after 4.4.3 update!

I installed that update that upgraded the phone to 4.4.3 and enabled Wi-Fi calling about a week ago. And since then, the SMS app has been incredibly laggy to the point where it is near unusable. I am not exaggerating, it takes literally about 20 seconds from me tapping a letter, for the phone to vibrate that it recognized I touched the screen and display the letter on the screen.
I know that internally the SMS is working fine since I can get replies back on my Pebble before the message I sent that they are replying too even appears on my screen.
Also, this only happens to specific contacts, but always the same ones.
Everything was working perfectly before this update, but directly after installing it this happened. Any ideas?

Backup & do a hard reset will take care of it. I always recommend doing a hard reset after any kinda of big update anyway. I would also do a profile update once the hard reset is complete. There was some issues with connectivity for this update that a profile update should take care of, although it's not going to solve your sms problem.

It's possible, doesn't really hurt to try. I usually try and restore as little data as possible and do everything by hand. One thing you can do if you wanna keep your sms, is export it, then import sms only back in after the rest. I have had good luck with it. Certain apps I use titanium backup to restore, but a lot of stuff I do by hand. I have tried HTC's backup on a friends phone, it actually worked better than I thought. Sometimes it's nice to not do a backup (other than like sms & photos) It will clear out the old apps you don't wanna use.
