If you're installing a new rom, ALWAYS do da factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and cache partition!
On the other hand, if you only want to install an "update" (new version) of the SAME ROM you already installed (MIUI for example), you don't need to do factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache is enough, copy and flash the updated rom and enjoy in the new version with all your data/apps/messages etc. there!

can u tell me what is stored in Dalvik cache?
if you're on stock roms, then going to cm/miui, do this:
go Recovery
-wipe dalvik cache
-wipe cache
-wipe data
-install the rom
-then it will reboot automatically(or after installation, reboot) then it will bootloop
-remove battery and put it back in, then do 3 button combo (recovery mode)
then install the rom again,
-optionally install kernels, etc
-reboot.
or if you're coming from a same rom, but new version, you don't have to wipe, just install the new version of rom.
I would recommend to never format boot, if not done correctly it may brick your phone.

Hi, I'm using nitrogen OS on my Redmi note 3. It got updated to 8.1.0(Oreo) through flashing from 8.0.0(Oreo). While doing so I didn't clear the necessary cache like dalvik, system in TWRP. Is it necessary to clear the cache in TWRP while upgrading in the android version?(Though I'm using same AOSP based nitrogen os for 8.0.0 & 8.1.0)
So I just started using TWRP and its awesome and I wanted to a simple cache partition wipe like you know the wipe cache partition on a stock recovery, so I was wondering if I should just select the Cache option in the Wipe menu or both the Cache and the Dalvik Cache?
i always wipe both, cache and dalvik - never hurts.
Thanks.
I used the wrong gapps and now they're system apps. Can I uninstall them and flash new gapps (already have new gapps). I also can boot into TWRP and trying to use the S SlimRom
Just wipe and reinstall SlimLP + the gapps you want.

What kind of wipe?
You can try wiping cache, dalvik cache and system. Aka dirty flash.
If there is any problem then wipe dalvik cache, cache, data and system.
Hi everyone,
I dirty flashed gapps as I had the KitKat gapps in 12.1. Now everything constantly crashes. What would fix this?
Clear your cache & dalvik partitions in TWRP. To do this, select Wipe -> Advanced Wipe in TWRP, then check Cache & Dalvik Cache boxes, then swipe to wipe.
Just wanted to wipe cache in recovery and found that there is no such option to do so
Is there a way to wipe cache like we do in other phones?
There is no cache partition on A2, it's inside data, wiping data will wipe cache
