That isn't "blur".... that's normal and to expect with wide aperture optics and big sensors... it's a well know photographic effect called "bokeh"... you can read about it online.

Do you have any lens protection or glass cover etc installed over the camera module? Any kind of protection on the back?
Also, can you post some photos of the camera module? Check for any condensation or debris inside the camera housing, especially under the main camera lens cover.

In previous 1X photo you had a subject in first plane... maybe the cam focus on that and naturally the background result unfocus (bokeh). In you last 1X photo there is less distance to hut, and nothing was in first plane, so the focus was on the hut.
IMHO

Hi !
Thanks for you're message
Yes since the beginning , i had a glass cover on my camera module , and i think it was the problem..but after remove it , same issue
Some exemple
You can see , all time the background is "blurry" , if you zoom on the photo , is very blurry
If i use the 3.0x zoom , the background is perfect...
Do you have a solution..?

Can you post photos of the camera module? Not photos "from" the S21U camera, photos "of" the camera module on the back of your phone. You have to take it with another phone/camera... There might be something under the lens cover

did you zoom out in the 2nd photo? try also not to take pictures in front of the sun or a bright light, it can affect the picture quality as the light will fed up the sensor too much, which will result the 1st photo. you can adjust in by soft press the camera button. you'll notice that it will focus first and enhancing the view, then hard press it so it will take the picture. Try to post also some other samples from different views and angles. it's odd since Z3c has a good camera quality, you just have to utilized it
this is how the pictures always looked try to use manual mode you won't see big different bet u can make it a little bit better

The problem is it's hard to measure the quality but it just doesn't look right.

Hi Bro,
What normal is when you point your camera directly on a bright light, which the sensor will fed up too much light and it will not handle too much light. That was happen on your 1st photo from the post.
But after seeing these pictures, i think you have a problem with your lens which is not so normal. Does this happens also when recording a video using the main camera? Here's mine that i shot just earlier using the main and back respectively.

I have a feeling it's just dust...
looking at my photos for a year, it seems to be happening slowly
so much for dust resistance
but still - it's hard to measure so hard to say when and how it happened
That looks more like moisture then dust to me.
Have you ever had the phone opened? (replaced screen or back glass)
I wonder if opening the side ports, putting the phone in a sealed container with some silica gel packs, in a warm place might help?
My camera is so horrible too, only Google Camera make half-decent photos.
Let's hope official Marshmallow will do miracles, likely not.
I have the exact same problem. After some time the photos just look foggy. I hope this isn't a case of continuous dust piling up under the back glass and affecting the lense...
Hi, today I made some pictures under low light conditions with 4 cameras:
Money taken from the top of a glass, light and distance conditions equal, camera fully auto.
Iphone 5, Iphone 6, Z3C locked (lollipop), Z3C unlocked (marshmallow).
My own unlocked Z3C is the loser.
you have to relock the bl and restore your backup TA to get good images again in low light. or if you want to stay with unlocked BL, you have to use the drm fix
Hi @regcoll !!
At the end i was able to found out someone else with my exact same problem... have a Z3 Compact since May last year and it made outstanding pics a the begining... however it got blurrier and blurrier. Now even old Nexus4 is closer to it.

Did you got some feedback from them? Here in Spain the costs sending, repairing and returning the phone to a Sony dealer might costs as much as new Z3C
result
I've contacted Sony about it and they agreed to repair it under warranty (even that the phone is 15 months old).
They've replaced the camera part.
The new camera feels a bit different so they either changed the camera for Z3 at some point or installed the camera from a newer phone.
It's working well now, the only downside I was left 3 weeks without a phone which was annoying as my spare one is too old.
Hi,
Was looking around for any answers on the same issue. So is mine, very hard to focus now and images are very "HAZY". I checked my back camera lens and noticed odd scratch marks. Apparently, its the lens not being of gorilla glass, or a film that's getting scratched off - I'm not sure. Still in the process of figuring it out.

Hello to all. I have the same problem with z3 compact.Photos are not focused well, foggy when maximize photo is more blurred. If take a pic of a book from 1 meter away, in the zooming can not read small letters. This problem started since Jan 17, as i take backup of all my photos in google. I gave the phone to a Sony certified center for the problem. They replaced everything familiar with the lens, also the display. The problem still occurs!!!!!
Hi All
Before I buy this phone I'd like to know if the stock camera app supports RAW and also if this is exposed for 3rd party apps as I'd like to use Open Camera.
Thanks in advance...
Steve
No and Yes
Hi.
I have Mi 9 since 4 days.
With stock camera you can't use raw.
But if you install Camera 2 API and enables it, you can use Open Camera for shooting in raw (in stock camera not).
It saves in DNG format and Photoshop CC with Camera Raw 11.2 is able to open it without problems.
Hi @superangelitoso
Thanks very much for taking the time to check this out.
Did you have to root the phone to enable camera2 api? If not, how did you enable it?
Kind Regards
Steve

The Google camera ports have a RAW option, but in all honesty I've not thoroughly tested to see if it properly works....
Hi @cd993
Thanks for your reply. The reason I'm asking is I have a P20 Pro which does not offer RAW for 3rd parties an despite may requests, I don't think they will. Flagship hardware, barge software lol.
Any road up, if the mi 9 offers the support, I can use open camera which will then plug the many holes in the Huawei stock app.
I'm just on the cusp of buying the mi 9 and funnily enough am in Spain and will visit Barcelona a few times so could buy one here.
If anyone can confirm raw for 3rd party apps and how they achieved it, I'd be most grateful
Cheers
Steve

Could you add link to DNGs from Mi9?
Hi All
OK so I'm in Spain on my hols and came across a mobile shop so I bought the 6/128GB global version for €499 or £425.
I'm still playing with it but have found out the following:
Camera 2 Probe reports that HW Level 3 is OK for the front and rear camera. Also RAW is support is available out of the box for both the front and rear camera.
There does seem to be an issue here. Camera2 Probe reports the maximum photo size is 4000x3000 rather than 8000x6000.
Both Open Camera and Hedgecam report they can take 8000x6000 images, and they do this correctly for jpegs, but for DNGs the saved image is only approx. 24MB and viewing the files shows that they are only 4000x3000, or 12mp.
So it looks like the RAW exposed is actually the 12MP telephoto camera. Bummer. I really want 48MP raw.
I'll post up a RAW and a jpeg sample from Open Camera later this morning.
Cheers

Try to use GCam port from other thread or Lightroom apk from play store. Just use camera build in Lightroom, check DNG, and take photo, then edit it as you wish then export full size JPG (without full version of apk there is no option to export DNG, but exported JPG should be still much better and unprocessed than stock cam)
Ok So here's a couple of samples. Both were taken at the same time at 8000x6000 with OC set to save a jpeg and a dng.

Thanks so much! I couldn't find MI9 DNG files in whole internet ;p
Firstly, I'm so impressed with clarity of the image! Noise is nice, not too smooth, but lenses are not the best quality, they are soft. Also I think that this sensor has low dynamic range (unprocessed), but anyway for a smartphone, quality is jawdropping Compared to my compact camera Sony RX100III, Mi9 is better!
If you want you can post some more samples
Edit:
There is 200% crop of your RAW and jpg Huuuge difference! Maybe RAW is softer but has more details and it's not oversharped, and look at the colors

I just went back to my P20 Pro. A 40MP RAW is 79MB which is compressed. If I covert it with DCRAW, the file ends up as just under 120MB which is reassuring as 24 bit uncompressed images should be about 3 x the MP in MB eg 40mp x 3 = 120MB.
I checked the P20 Pro raw image size and is 5472 x 7296 so is proper 40MP dump.
I'm now in the position where Huawei don't expose RAW for 3rd parties so you have to use their *crap* software and Xiaomi offer Level 3 Camera2 but probably pixel bin the images before providing the RAW giving only 12MP images.
If someone has a suggestion on how to fix this, they will defo be on my xmas list

ps does anyone know of a gcam port that works on the mi 9 with RAW?
Hi All
I've been reading around this for a while and can't quite decide what this sensor can do. I appreciate it's a Quad Bayer arrangement which is very effective for grouping pixels together which allows for good performance in low light and produces 12MP images.
I notice the spec sheet says "48 effective pixels" but I understand this means there are a few extra pixels round the edge used to discover brightness etc, or does effective mean not really?
This could be a dense question, but can this sensor produce true 48MP images? I notice the RAW output on the Mi9 is only 12MP so is probably 48MP pixel binned.
What I'm really looking for 48MP RAW. I'm guessing the output would be very soft and unsharp, but then I can do my own post processing to suit my taste.
Edit: The issues seems to be an incorrect implementation of Camera2 Api which reports max resolution of 3000x4000 for the 48MP camera. It's been reported below so if you'd like to see 48MP jpegs and RAW for 3rd party apps, please visit the link and confirm the issue in a post below.

my mi9 hasnt arrived yet, but from what I read, it CAN output 48mp in an manual mode (not auto). Regarding RAW instead of Jpeg: i don't know if stock app can do it at 48mp, but gcam most probably will (at least when the port is finalized). But using 48mp will disable HDR because its somehow Chipset limited.
Hi Mine has arrived and can confirm the stock camera will take 48MP jpegs. Th RAW output is only 12MP.
But I wonder is it really 48MP? If the sensor is quad bayer, meaning that 4 green pixels are grouped together, then 4 red etc. how can you possibly get full res out of that arrangement?
It looks like this:

Well I think I've answered my own question and it seems to be yes; it can output true 48MP images;
If you slip one pixel right and down, you can group pixels into a traditional RGGB Bayer arrangement. Now that's clever!
If you look at the attached image, I've drawn white boxes around each group of 4 pixels, ignoring the 1st row and column. You can see in each box, there is an RGGB combination, so it's job done!
My brain hurts.....

It's like a Pentile Amoled so? It's not a real 48mp like a RGB Amoled would be.
Well I think it's similar as there are twice as many green pixels as red or blue (the same as all Bayer sensors), but I think you can get real 48MP out of it by slipping the matrix by 1 pixel as shown above.
Is that that what you were asking?
Cheers

Just a quick update on this.
The Camera2 API is Level 3, but the max photo resolutions of the front and rear cameras are misreported for 3rd party apps. Using Camera2 API Probe from here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.airbeat.device.inspector
Shows that the rear camera is 4000x3000 (12MP) and should be 8000x6000 (48MP). The front camera is reported as 2592x1940 (5MP) and should be 5184x3880 (20MP).
The upshot of this is that 3rd party apps produce 12MP images from the rear camera and 5MP images from the front camera.
I've just unlocked my phone and installed xiaomi.eu rom 9.3.28 from here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/xi.../files/xiaomi.eu/MIUI-WEEKLY-RELEASES/9.3.28/
But no improvement, it's just the same.
I'll report this as a bug and report back. What I'm really looking for is 48MP RAW for 3rd parties.
Wish me luck....

The Sony sensor is not a real 48mp sensor. That's only marketing.
It's a 12mp sensor with real-time HDR
Gesendet von meinem MI 9 mit Tapatalk
Hi thanks for your reply. Do you have the data sheet for the sensor? I've scoured the Internet but only found a news release.
I'd really like to understand this if I can. So the 48MP photos in the stock cam are just upscaled 12MP?
Cheers
Steve
I've reported this as a bug to Xiaomi here:
http://en.miui.com/thread-6249265-1-1.html
So if you want 48MP for 3rd party apps, please verify it on the link above and maybe we can get it!
Cheers

Check datasheet, it's 48Mpix sensor, but won't produce 48Mpix images without array conversion.
Pretty nice article about it:
https://www.androidpit.com/48-mp-or-not-look-at-sony-new-camera-sensor
Hi
Thanks yes I did read that article, but think in my 4th post I explained how to get true 48MP from it. I'm at the limits of my knowledge here, so could be very wrong
The Sony news release says:
When shooting bright scenes such as daytime outdoors, the built-in, original signal processing function performs array conversion, making it possible to obtain high-definition 48 effective megapixel images in real time
https://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201807/18-060E/index.html
what do you think?
This article:
https://www.quora.com/Why-aren-t-all-48MP-sensors-born-equal
Compares the IMX586 and the Samsung GM1, both 48MP sensors. It says the difference is that the IMX586 has integrated array conversion and can produce true 48MP images, whereas the GM1 does not and can offer only 12MP pixel binned images.
When shooting bright scenes, such as an outdoor environment during daytime, the built-in, original signal processing function performs array conversion (see diagram below), making it possible to obtain high-definition 48 effective megapixel images in real time. Thus, the Sony IMX586 can produce true 48MP photos.

Sounds promising....
I can only imagine how amazing photos it will be possible to output with Lightroom using 48mpx raws. From what I can read here, it really sounds it will be possible to achieve as hardware-wise everything on paper says it is producing real 48mpx. I just wonder if it's possible to "unlock" this with gcam. Probably I can feel that root will be needed ...

Yes I think the potential is there. I've reported it as a bug to Xiaomi higher up, so please click the link and comment and maybe Xiaomi will fix it!

What we need from xiaomi is RAW 48 mp, higher bitrate of the mic, maybe a few other little things and we have the perfect phone. How can we SPAM xioami to do that ?!!
Well 48MP RAW is reported, if you follow the link I reported above, you enter your own bug and hopefully they will fix it. I'm new to Xiaomi so I don't know how much notice they take of bug reports, but they say the more users that confirm the bug, the more likely they will fix it.
Just a quick bump.
If you want to see 48MP RAW on the Mi9, please follow the link on the first post and confirm the issue then hopefully Xiaomi will take note.
Cheers
Please ignore the link on the first post as it keeps getting changed. Here's the link:

Your screenshoot shows 8000*6000 on the last row for photo size, so not a good proof.

S21 ULTRA I MEAN
Set an AF lock and mind the cam shake.
Because these phones are so light some cam shake is almost inevitable*. Try bracing it on a solid object.
Enable image stabilization if present but you still need to be steady when punching the release.
If you feel there's still an issue, cam data settings and clear system cache on the boot menu.
If the cam apk has been updated, return it to factory load.
Try a hard reboot (not a reset!!!).
*the greater the mass, the more stable it is. One of the reasons the heavier pro cams grab better shots.
Looks normal to me. I know Samsung toned down the saturation and oversharpening. Maybe when taking picture in 108mp mode you can crop in with more detail.

the best solution for that :
take pictures with another phone, send it to your devices gallerie and looking for them, it wiil be better right now .... ps: it's just a joke...
Are that distortions/blurs on the bottom of the photos caused by a defective camera or normal?

Sometimes the photos are good but its rare. Look https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/4136/kywQRU.jpg
Maybe that's because of light condition / scenario ?

Specially when taking photo of close object, it blur out all the edge. Im really hate this camera because of that problem
Guys can you upload some similar photos like mine? Thanks a lot
