I have a four year old Blackberry Storm. I like the phone but it will not tether to my NC so I can use the phones internet.
Now I am looking for a new phone.
4G is not a required but it would be nice.
Suggestions?
Please tell us who your carrier is.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA App
Sorry, That would be a big help....
Verizon
The Samsung Galaxy S II
is rather sexy.
But there are alot of great choices out there.
4G would be a good choice in general. Tether it to your Nook and you can easily stream all the media you want to your Nook and enjoy media on the 7" screen.
The Galaxy S II is coming to Version in July
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-said-to-be-verizon-bound-in-july/
Edit:
Oops, read the article closer, I guess Galaxy S II in July is not confirmed. read the update at the bottom of the article. Sorry.
Definitely...
The 3 best verizon phones out there are the:
Thunderbolt (HTC) Good speeds, android 2.3.4 with gingeritis (a rom) root, sense 3.0 on that rom, but bad battery life. 4G though.
Droid Incredible 2 (HTC) I believe its Froyo, but sense 2.1 on stock rom with good battery. 3g though.
Droid CHarge (Samsung) Bad UI, bad manufacture. Android is OK with the customizations. But 4G + Extremely good battery + tethering = awesome time with the Nook
Good battery life is a lot higher than streaming video. I almost never use my phone for this.
My phone is primarily for work. Email, phone, data.
I am a Submarine Combat Systems Electronic/Computer Engineer and I upload ton of Word/Excel files, PDF ect along with technical manuals and cheat sheets that I have developed myself to aid with any repairs that I have to do, in any part of the world. Having world phone coverage is NOT an issue. But the issue with that, is up until now 99% of all phone screens were too damn small.
The NC has fixed that issue.
I use Documents to Go on the Storm and now have it on the NC along with a bunch of other apps. I want to start to use my NC for email and such in conjunction with my new phone. Sometimes I get new schematics, PDF's etc emailed to me when I am out on some boat.
My long term goal is to make the phone and NC one integrated system. Transmitter/receiver on my belt, and NC in my hands.
Does this help?
Oh, rooting my new phone will have to be a must....
Thanks to all who have already responded.

bad manufacturer? how so?
From the verizon porfolio, i would wait for more LTE phones to roll out. There is really nothing attractive coming out from them.

I have never owned one, but the general consensus on this and most every other forum seems to be that Samsung is the worst manufacturer by a very large margin. I have heard various reasons why such as a horrible UI, bad build quality and extremely slow updates to current models. Having never owned one I can't confirm any of this but the XDA community as a whole seems to feel that Samsung phones are not a wise choice and I've learned never argue with them so I went HTC
Edit: Also do keep in mind that many newer phones are expected to have locked bootloaders. This means no custom ROMS or possibly no rooting... and that means that if you want tethering you will have to buy Verizons tethering plan. So, if you are wanting to do the free tethering provided by rooting your phone then you will want to make sure that whichever phone you buy can in fact be rooted! And in the case of many newer phones coming out this summer, that is very much in doubt I'm sad to say. But then again all these rumors may be just sky-is-falling panicky behavior by us newbs, the Chefs may be able to root and flash boot-locked phones in a month flat for all we know!

Outside of the whole brand bias, general consensus including professional reviews are usually favorable for samsung's high end phones.
They did have some issues just like every other manufacturer and it may have seemed worse partially based on the fact that they had the single largest successful line up out of all the android handsets last year
Btw, galaxy s2 came with unlocked bootloader and received at least two updates since early may and 2.3.4 is supposedly under way. As for the carrier delayed roms, there is a real issue there when two identical devices on two different carriers ended up getting the froyo updates months apart.
Btw samsung released the gingerbread update before anyone else.

They also just sent free Samsung Galaxy S II's to many of the Cyanogenmod developers. Also, it seems that the trend NOW is that the manufacturers will be unlocking their bootloaders. (samsung has never locked theirs if I remember correctly)
Well that is good news. Maybe they are trying to buy their way back onto the XDA peoples good graces Hey as long as they have learned from their mistakes and are building quality phones now, nothing wrong with that! And I have no doubt that no matter what they buy the Devs, it won't get them any good press here that they don't deserve. Like I mentioned I never bought one. I've just heard hundreds of people posting about how "bad" they were for one reason or another. But I'm always glad to see another Android manufacturer step up their game, it's good for the community as a whole!
I have the Droid X and it play well with my NC using Wireless Tether.
I picked up a LG Revolution. Seems ok, but battery life is not great. Better than the Thunderbolt but still not great.
Using wireless tether on the phone, I was able to get my NC to the internet using Wi-Fi. Attempted Bluetooth tethering but that was a no go.
Thank to all for the recommendations.
my samsung galaxy s gt-i9000m is a fantastic bit of hardware that had lots of software issues that made out seem as though it was bad hardware. I found software fixes for everything that was wrong, e.g., microphone distortion, gps failure to lock, etc. & now it is a perfect device. Maybe HTC is better out of the box, but if you are a tweaker the galaxy is rewarding.

Thunderbolt, Droid Charge are the best options. If 4G is not a must, the Droid X2 has a dual core.
They all will do what you want. Just different styles which is up to your personal tastes.
I have now had htc samsung and moto phones (all Android) and there are pros and cons. Just go to a store and see what feels best when you hold it.

There really is no "best android" phone IMO. There are different needs for different reasons and people. You mention that you want to make them work seamlessly, blue tooth or tethering both will work. As long as the phone is rootable and a selection is there for apps to work together from phone to NC, then the simple answer is with phone do you prefer? I always make sure my phones have a battery that can be removed..screen is easy on eyes and I have a good feel for it. Currently using my EVO which is sprint for both my nook, transformer and when also my netbook. I might upgrade to the 3d and even thought about samsung galaxy 2..from what a friend of mine told me who has a samsung...flash CM in it becuase of the update issues..he is TMobile..
4g
Well
i use evo 4g with cm7 latest nightly to tether to my nc... it compliment each other....
Donny
I owned a galaxy s on tmo before. I liked it a lot. Very light, great screen, decent power. No build issues other than flaky GPS (vibrant version only?) Hard to brick for those who flash a lot. Problem with file system early on(due to proprietary fs), solved by roms. I actually unlocked it and still switch to it from my inspire4g. No locked bootloader.
But really, any android (that is unlocked bootloader) will work... its all about preferences.

This is kinda a question and a discussion starter.
The Moto X has allot going for it above other phones:
-It has great battery life
-It has features aimed at the general consumer and keeps the interface looking pretty while doing it
-It has the Moto Maker
-It looks beautiful and unique (wood backs anyone?)
-The price is great for the specs
-The screen is bright and clear despite being only 720p
-Aiming at the everyday consumers not just the geeker consumers
-The marketing budget I think was close to 500 million (I may be wrong)
-It is on all carriers, and has big displays in all their stores (when I was looking around my area at carrier's stores to see if this is true a couple of stores had people actually were looking at the Moto X with delight)
-It has several other small features like fast updates and a decent camera
-Insert other things I forgot to add of what it has going for it
So my question is this. With all these things going for it why wasn't it successful? It is a phone that could have competed with the likes of Samsung and Apple and would have done well doing so, this has always confused me.
Sent from my Moto X which is better than the S4 or HTC One
1. Most people like high end specs which the phone kinda lacks.
2. Not enough exposure in media
Motorola did a great job with moto x. I hope they continue with it.
Sent from my XT1056 using xda app-developers app
I have no idea where they spent that marketing budget but the blame has to rest solely on them. So many tech and industry people agree the Moto X was one of the top devices or the top device of 2013. The engineering team who designed it should be extremely proud of the design and features. It really was a total let down in the advertising department - they really needed to push touchless control and active notifications.
Comes down to sammy and apple, those 2 brands seem to be in peoples minds , cool & hip. If you have neither you're second class. I was offered an s4 from Rogers which would have cost me less but I just preferred the feel of how the moto felt in my hands, nor did I want to follow the herd. bah bah bah bah

Here's what I think. While people know about Motorola, they know Samsung and Apple better. Just about everyone I've talked to knows who Samsung is and what they make for the most part. The Galaxy S series is very popular and has a lot of media attention. The Moto X didn't get a lot of this and MotoMaker even less. Apple on the other hand has a loyal crowd. Macintosh is one of the top three operating systems and a good chunk of those that use Macs are going to to pick up an iPhone because it's an Apple product.
I work as an indirect cell phone retailer (basically I sell AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and a lot of prepaid). When I talk with a customer, almost all of them know about the newest Samsung Galaxy S and/or the newest iPhone. I will also get customers the come in and ask "what's the best phone?" (I love getting asked this) I'll try to ask questions to help find a phone that fits their needs, but most will just pick the phone with the most features, specs, or the simplest to operate.
The thing is, most of us here probably spend a good amount of time looking into the phones we're interested in. We learn what works, doesn't work, how optimized (or not) the system is, and so on. We here are generally the minority of cell phone consumers. Those that have done their "homework" don't come to me asking what phone to get. They generally get the phone themselves and usually off-contract. The majority of consumers will get a familiar named phone that has features and high specs, even if a mid-range phone that's optimized can out perform it.
I think I'm gonna start referring to the iPhone 5S as a midrange device with its 640p screen, dual-core processor, and 1GB of RAM. I don't think 1080p would be beneficial in a 4.7" screen. Offloading the sensor and voice data to tailored DSPs was a smart choice too.
Anyway, it takes time to chip away at the big names like Samsung and Apple.
Where the 2013 Nexus 7 gets praise for its quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (a rebadged S600), the Moto X gets derided for its dual-core S4 Pro (also using most of the S600 internals). People think it's old hardware, but it's not. That was another uphill battle for Motorola.
A better camera would have resulted in my wife and sister both getting one. I can deal with it, they can't.
However for the first time in years I was asked "what kind of phone is that" by someone. the cashier at home Depot when they were scanning my return email off my phone. "I like the size, it's not huge".
I think moto is (was) off to a great start with a new line of phones with great performance and not huge. Hell the new galaxy s5 is going to be as big as the note at 5.25". What iphoner is going to do that? Not my mom that's for sure. But the x could win those people over over the next few generations of devices.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Yeah...I don't think Motorola failed as much as Samsung and apple succeeded.
People get iPhone and Samsung thrown at them in ads and word of mouth....so that's what they buy.
It will be hard to change that. Very. Look at iPhone. They've made no significant changes in years. Same old thing...just slightly quicker. But people are buying them...cause that's what their friends have. LOL
It may never change. The other makers can just hope to turn a profit at this point.....beating out the two giants will be a long haul.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
The general public does know about devices like we do. If you asked most people if they knew what was different about the iPhone 5s they would say its gold and has a finger print scanner. Its all word of mouth really. Everybody at my work had I phones but one person bought a galaxy so now everyone else bought a galaxy. Once I go to work with my bamboo back x they will drool.
I have literally owned every smartphone that att has sold plus Nexus's. Moto x blows all of those phones away.
Yeah, I can't even count the number of GS4 and GN3 variants there are internationally. Samsung sells their products EVERYWHERE. They have some serious market penetration, which partially explains their ridiculous sales numbers.
The rest is brand identity. Old Motorola shot themselves in the foot by not offering the same branded phone on every carrier. On Verizon, you could get a Droid RAZR HD, but on AT&T, it was its cousin the Atrix HD. There was no continous brand identity like there is now with the Moto X and Moto G. That helped Samsung build up their Galaxy line too.
Apple and Samsung have its OWN "shiny" stores in malls and stands in Best Buy. Apple was the first one to open cool stores, now Samsung is doing the same.
Moto X arrived in summer without motomaker and was like on 1 or 2 carriers in USA, months later it came to motomaker and was available on all carriers, and now half a year later its available internationally. Half a year is a long time, its already an "old" phone....we got G2, G Flex, and soon S5 coming out.
All I gotta say is... It's a marathon, not a foot race.
Motorola has broken into the smartphone game again, but they need tablets, phablets, laptops and wearables. They need to be competitive in every aspect of people's lives, then and only then will they gain the market share. That my friends will take time and support from us, the true Motorola fans.

Really simple... money.
Samsung can spend tons of money on marketing, Apple doesn't necessarily needs (its just hype), but they also spend a lot...
Motorola have made the perfect phone, but it lacks on money for advertising and distribution...
That's why I'm please with Lenovo acquisition, they got tons and tons of money and, as it appears, they want to keep Motorola as it is but expand the market distribution.
They need to spend billions in ads campaign and have their super bowl commercials. The word "Motorola" doesn't really rhyme with hip. Another factor is the last two Moto phones are made for ergonomic use and price value, it's not the current fad. You can argue Apple is ergonomic, but the MotoX is lost in the sea of Android big screen phones. The current fad is subsidized 2 years contract and a 6" phablet with high end specs and bloatwares with poor software optimization.
Also MotoX and G just came out for a short time, they need more time to build up the 'Moto' name. There are only two devices now (that's how I see it), it's early days, eventually they'll have to make phablet and tablets as well.

Only one real answer to this question, the rest of the answers like "specs" are not true (most customers don't know). Answer is marketing.
I don't know if that is true. I have seen several commercials about it. I may be wrong though.

lenovo buying motorola will be very good for moto x sales moving forward. lenovo is the 3rd largest phone manufacturer and make very high quality ones at that. hopefully they only look to improve the moto x not change it.
I'd say marketing (see iPhone) and most people are specs/benchmarks whores.

It was only available thru AT&T in the U.S. when initially released. It took a couple of months for the other carriers to get it. That's where Motorola failed.
Hey guys,
So, as you already know, the end of 2015 is near and in just a couple of weeks we'll enter 2016, embracing the new devices, new technologies, new chips that will reside in your future phones and tablets, and perhaps will see interesting changes to the manufacturers from around the world as one makes a mistake, while others learn and improve from theirs
Seeing as how this year has been a really interesting one for pretty much every OEM out there, whether the device manufacturedc shipped with Android, iOS, Windows or other operating system, like when Motorola kinda disappointed us with updates for Moto E, LG pumped out great G4 and V10, and Samsung went backwards on the Galaxy S6.
Nevertheless, I think we can all agree that this year everybody found a device to pick up, no matter if its on the low-end pricing model like the Moto G or Xperia E4, or a solid mid-range like Nexus 5X and Motorola X Play, going into the premium-class range of top-devices like Xperia Z5, Galaxy S6, iPhone 6S, Nexus 6P, and many others
But I guess I'll get straight to the point:
What, in your opinion, were the Top-10 best mobile devices released througout 2015?
If you can't put them in a straight-up order - no fear, just list them here and we'll discuss it together
Aaaaaaand GO!
Hey guys, I have been using the Note 8 for 6 months now and I like the phone over all. Few things I am not finding very comfortable are it's size and the weight. And in general gotten a bit bored of the phone. So, I had been to a local store yesterday and saw the V30 here in India. And I must say I really liked it. The design, the display, the form factor and over all appeal of the phone was really good. The only poor thing was it's front camera. But I am not selfie person so I can live with it. But the wide angle rear camera is dope. I hardly use the portrait mode on the Note 8. But I used to take lot of fun pictures with my G6. So I am thinking of switching to the V30. Has anyone here done it? Or own both the phones? Need some honest opinions
If you are just EVEN considering this, my advice is that you should do it, in my case I would NEVER consider using anything less than a samsung galaxy note series device, for me, it is all about the S PEN, the most unique feature among all other devices, what makes the note series devices stand out, you see, anybody who gets a note device should consider the s pen as the #1 reason, if not, the S+ series would be the logical choice, or other good real flagship for that matter, (LG, sony, apple, google, etc)
Haha. Thanks for the advice. I haven't been able to use anything other than Samsung phones in the last 4 years. And one Major reson for that has been the display and to an extent camera. I love the Note 8 and would have not thought of switching, had I not seen the V30. The V30 is much more comfortable in the hand because of its size, weight and form factor. Also, the POLED screen is so much more better than their old LCD displays. And I even compared the Note 8 to the V30 and to my surprise I sort of liked the V30 better. And even while playing those large 4K videos, the V30 was stutter free while my Note 8 clearly was not as smooth. Nevertheless, I am still super confused, as i fear that i might regret my decision later. I have spent a lot of money on the insurance and on the original Samsung case and resale value is bad here in India. But my gut feeling is to still go ahead and try the V30
Well, I thought I will be using the S pen a lot, but unfortunately dint use it after the first few weeks.
I agree, if that's how you feel go for it. Even if someone tries to convince you not to, you already have the thought & may not agree. But if someone tells you reasons why you should you'll probably agree because you have that thought already. People look for assurance to make big decisions, it's human nature. But this decision is yours, it's your personal preference, everyone is different & nothing wrong with that.
My past 2 phones were Notes, I'm a big fan of the SPen. I'm always up for change & consider others. I do look at phones other than Samsung whenever I get a new one. But LG is not one of them. I'm personally not a fan of any of their products except my room AC is LG, their phones & TVs, they never catch my eye. Quality & features seem lacking to me. Maybe part of it is the experience with them that I saw when I worked in OEM electronic repair. We always said that LG stood for Low Grade. Haha
It sounds like you are the type to get bored of phones & need to change often. In the US for T-Mobile we have a Jump On Demand program where after 18 months or something like that you can trade in your phone for some new model. Great for people who like to have the latest & greatest. Do they offer anything like that where you are? It will help your wallet to switch phones often.
Hahaha. I understand you. For me, LG has always been that brand which has come very close to replacing my Samsung phones But never succeeded. I have an LG 4K tv which I absolutely love. As far as the decision of buying the V30, I haven't made up my mind completely yet. I wanted to know from someone who has used both and if they had a strong reason not to switch from the Note 8, apart from its S pen feature of course. I am still in 2 minds actually, since I will be wasting a lot of money and Also, if I regret the decision later, I will definitely not be able to spend more to get back to the Note 8 for now. Haha.

Hahahaha. Absolutely!! You got me. I am that kind of person who get bored with phones very often. And unfortunately here in India we don't have such schemes. What a shame!!
To be fair I've never played with a LG TV so I can't really say I don't like them. LG crossed my mind before buying the Note 8. Then I decided to buy an Exynos Note 8 cause I can't live without custom recovery & root cause we only have Snapdragon in the US. But then again if it comes to the day when that's not an option I may switch from Samsung even if not available on other OEMs. There are some Huawei phones that seem nice, I think they will be a great competitor in due time if not already.
That sucks that resale value is low where you are. How about selling on ebay? I've never sold my old phones. Luckily I'm not the type to upgrade phones every year, that would definitely not be good for my wallet as flagship phones cost way too much these days.
Unfortunately, It's all the same here whether you sell it on eBay or any other platform. Nevertheless, i might not buy the V30 if i dont sell my Note 8 for a decent price. Lets see

OP do as you please. Your money and your choice. V30 excellent phone. LG blows away EVERY phone in audio away. The new LG V30 coming out soon. The LG V30 ThinQ? LG sales have been pretty bad. So now they do slight upgrade from last year flagship huh? Even the new V30 only thing it has over Note 8 is better chip and audio.
Regular V30 only had better audio then Note 8. I do agree V30 looks better. The curved screen is worthless. I'd still take Note 8 over V30. I use to be a die hard LG fan. If you do rock LG stick with V series! There other phones have crap build quality.
Worst build quality I've ever dealt with. Stick to V20, V30, V? Etc.
Even the V series is slightly risky according to some and this lawsuit below. Sales have been so bad rumors that LG canned LG G7. Kinda concerning to invest in a company like that? LG made Pixel 2 screens which is having a bad time with screens.

So, i could finally come to a decision after i went back to the store again today and played with the V30 for good amount of time. Well, i did one important thing before going to the store, which is, replaced my Note 8 official protective standing case with a local 360 degree case. This had already made a lot of difference in how i felt the Note 8 in the hand. So, while i was checking out the V30 today at the store, i did all the possible tests on how better or worse the screen is compared to the Note 8 and how good or bad the camera is and over all how the feel of holding it is, against the Note 8. But when i finally started typing on the V30, trust me, it literally felt like a toy. I had not felt that way until that moment. I immediately went back to my Note 8 and typed on it and i knew i had the better phone with me. Also, like i said, i had changed the case to a much lighter one which had already made the difference. But when i did try typing on the V30, i knew why i had paid those extra dollars for the Note 8. Happily came back home and not going to probably check any other phones until the Note 9 or Pixel 3 XL comes out. Thanks again for all the responses. My Note is here to Stay for longer
Edit: Changing the case to a lighter one would have made it more vulnerable to breaking, but hey, what is the insurance for after all?
Good decision

So, i could finally come to a decision after i went back to the store again today and played with the V30 for good amount of time. Well, i did one important thing before going to the store, which is, replaced my Note 8 official protective standing case with a local 360 degree case. This had already made a lot of difference in how i felt the Note 8 in the hand. That's why I don't bother upgrading every year, waste of money IMO. Usually need 2 generations to see worthy differences. Same with Android versions, need to 2 letter versions to see noticeable differences. That's why I don't understand why everyone was so anxious to get Oreo. Now that it's here, nothing exciting about it & different than all the past Oreo reviews.

Agreed 100%. 1k a year for a phone? No thanks. $500 not to bad. Yeah Oreo doesn't seem much different. We should get Android P, but that will be a while. Like you pointed out usually takes 2 generations to see a worthy difference. In regards to new features and better specs. Some people want newest phone though. For those people do as you will. Others that on the fence really read into what we're saying.
Samsung admits the sales are bad.
Do you think the sales are bad because people are finally getting sick of the bloatware or the incredible high price tag ?
Do you think S10 sales will be better ?

The S9 is my first Samsung phone and I bought it because of the stereo speakers and improved camera. They didn't catch me with the S8 but it did impress me when it came out.
Bad sales depends on a lot of factors. Ever increasing competition from Chinese OEMs, especially Hwawei, incremental changes to a phone that has already exhausted its sales or maybe wrongly assuming that you have achieved the same footing as Apple.
I'm impressed with the S9. It still stands out from the competition and I don't get the feeling that I'm missing out on anything another phone has to offer this year.
I dont think the price is high at all.
It's half the price of the iPhone X in my country..

That doesn't mean anything, everything is half the price of overpriced Apple stuff
Remove Apple from the comparison and it becomes expensive
I think the regular user don't mind about the bloatware, unfortunately. For me, the bloatware and this disgusting curved display it's what most annoys me.
The camera on Samsung phones are the best point for me.
Idk but I am enjoying my S9. I wanted the OP6 for 500€ but when I saw that I can buy S9 for 550€ the water resistant, better display, camera, expendable storage and wirelless charging is worth that extra 50€.

I was still on the S4 before the upgrade to the S9. The S8 just wasn't enough for me to upgrade but the S8 is so close to the S9 I can see why the sales are poor. For me it was a HUGE upgrade.
It's probably because of the bad publicity it got in regards to the American version Vs the rest of the world, the exynos battery life was abysmal, it's better now but still now where near as good as the Snapdragon version.
It is the most I've ever laid for a phone but all in all I'm happy with it. I used Moto phones from the original Moto G through the G4, mainly because they were easy to root and develop roms. Their purchase by Lenovo, a company that would have trouble engineering toy phones killed Motos' for me. Having owned a long line of Samsung tablets made me try the S9. I can now add Samsung to my list of Moto, LG, Huawei/Honor, and Nokia. The curved screen? Meh
I think people have finally had enough...
I loved the screen and camera of my S9 but the OP6 just seemed like a better fit for my needs since I like very smooth and fast performance and while the s9 did that to some extent, it could also become a bit slower than I liked over time. In the end I sold it for the OP6 which turned out of be a better choice despite being a "cheaper" or "inferior" phone.
1+6, g2 vs980, redmi n3 mtk, moto e condor
I think the bad sales numbers are due to people not needing the newest greatest phone every year anymore when there is not a great new feature added to them. For me this is my first Samsung device since the galaxy s2 or something. I was a die hard stock android/nexus fan for years and then when the nexus phones died I have been lost and trying different phones when needing another phone. First few post nexus phones was various moto phones as they use a close to stock version of android but I really wanted to go with a top tier phone that I could get financed threw my carrier and I feel stock android has became a little on the stale side so I went with the s9. Truth be told I really like it. I don't like bixby, or the stock launcher (I am actually using ruthless launcher which is a pixel launcher clone) but some of the built in Samsung apps are quite impressive to me like Samsung pay (still messes with peoples head when it works after they say it won't) or the Samsung browser that is like firefox and chrome had a baby and made that awesome thing. having a built in theme installer is kinda cool (again I guess me looking at stock android for so long I was bored with it as it hasn't changed that much in 2 or 3 years.)
It's because the S9 is not much different from the S8.
People are still happy with their S7's and S8's. It's that simple. S7 camera and performance is still great in 2018.
When you release something like every year like this I have a S8 And will either get a note 8 or 9
S9 isnt no where near enough of upgrade. And unless Galaxy S X is extraordinary Prob wont be going for that one either
The biggest thing with their numbers on S9 is the sales they had with S 6 7 and 8
No one sees enough to upgrade yet
The average person doesn't know or care what an "exynos" is or the pros and cons compared to stock Android etc. I think it's just because it's an incremental upgrade - no real obvious difference from the S8, so people looking to upgrade will say "huh, it's exactly the same" and not bother.
Or maybe it's because it doesn't have a notch. That seems to be a fashion statement these days. I hope and pray that Samsung doesn't fall for that particular fad - they've managed to steer clear so far.
I got mine very heavily subsidised by EE (by my most conservative calculations compared to SIM-only it cost me £320 or so. There are other ways you can argue that it's pretty much a free phone). Buying outright from Samsung they're expensive but carriers are almost handing them out in the street right now.
