Hey guys,
I've put together an app that lets you test your phone's IP67/IP68 water resistance seals without dunking it in water. This will both help people have confidence in their phones' water resistance capabilities while also giving a way for people to hold manufacturers and repair shops accountable.
This app works by using the barometer built in to your phone. Do note that the seals can become compromised with drops and device aging - keep your phone away from all liquids!
Download from the Play Store:
Water Resistance Tester - Apps on Google Play
An app that helps you test your phone's IP67/IP68 water resistance seals.
play.google.com
Demo videos:
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra US (factory water resistance, intact):
Samsung Galaxy A32 5G US (no factory water resistance):
Google Pixel 2 (factory water resistance, intact):
Google Pixel 3 XL (factory water resistance intact, and also tested with SIM tray removed):
this is pretty amazing
I have a brand new device, 2 days old and it says my device is not water proof? Really, or is it not working correctly on my phone?

According to the app, mine is neither. Never dropped, never been close to water although I do live in an area of relatively high humidity (I'm not there at the moment)..

Could you add support for the S20 FE by any chance?
My girlfriend has that phone and tried to install the app but the play store says the app is incompatible with her device.
Device details: Samsung Galaxy S20 FE G780F 256GB Dual Sim GSM Unlocked Android Smart Phone (Latin America Variant/US Compatible LTE). It is *NOT* the 5G variant.
I believe the S20 FE has a barometer so its hardware should be capable of running the app.

It seems that i'm lucky (if the app actually works )
I fully submerged into water and it's still working that's how confident I am on mine being waterproof, but the app says it isn't.
Also, mine reads about 1123 pressure, the post above me is lower, but water proof?
I am confused.

Try pressing on the screen quickly and harder (like you're giving CPR to your phone with your thumbs!)

The S20 FE unfortunately does NOT have a barometer. It's a strange omission by Samsung for sure.

For the barometer to work it need exposure to the outside air. There is no sealed internal barometer inside any Samsung.
I'm not buying this explanation.

Hey Guys , i want to ask whether NFC is enabled in Galaxy Note. I know it has the ability built in , but how do we enable it ?
it seems to be the the note does not have the NFC, i dont know why samsung always tells that there phones have the nfc while they are not, like the galaxy s ii which was supposed to have the nfc and till now, there is no galaxy s ii with nfc
hope that helped
It seems to me also that it doesn't have NFC. Maybe some unreleased models will have it, since pretty much every info I have seen lists NFC as "optional".
There was one weird thing about my Note, though - about a week ago, while I was still on stock ROM, I made a calendar event and wondered if there was any way to send it to my girlfriend, so I checked the "send via" menu and I can quite clearly remember that there was a NFC option there. I didn't really pay attention to it, since the other phone doesn't have NFC, but I noticed it and thought, "cool, so it does have NFC".
A few days later I downloaded a sensor test app from the market and noticed it had the NFC option grayed out (meaning it didn't detect NFC), after which I checked the calendar "send via" menu and it was gone from there too! I can't remember now, but I might have done a factory reset during that time, however, it was definately still stock ROM, not rooted.
I think that NFC is known as Android Beam and will be enabled in upcoming ICS update in March 2012
NFC required a special chip which the current models do not have. The model planned for the USA will have that chip.

Have no fear NFC is moving towards a baked into SIM design, Rather than being a hardware feature. The gsm alliance has created a standard where NFC technology will be integrated into your SIM. Meaning that even older phones that don't have NFC will then have that capability via their SIM. all you would need is to get an updated NFC enabled SIM from your carrier. I believe this is where NFC is going in the next few months so it doesn't matter if your phone doesn't have hardware NFC.

All current NOTE models don't have NFC radio.
Ones with it will be available this year 2012 from Telstra, AT&T, and Verizon (pending).
All of those models will get LTE, NFC, and the new Exynos 4210 chip (1.5 GHz) if supply enough otherwise the Qualcomm MSM86610 (OMAP4430 is too expensive).
NFC in it's current state, is useless anyway. Gimmicky.
Wake me up in two years when it actually breaks free of Sprint exclusivity. Then I'll get the Note 3 or whatever. It is useless as of today.

But would it still be accessible through the NFC API on android for applications? to at least program.
Regardless, isn't it cheating and mis-information on Samsung's part, stating it has NFC support, while actually it does not?
Cant we sue them for this?

In the current Samsung phones that have NFC, isn't the NFC chip in the battery? Could it be as simple as a battery swap down the line to one that has the NFC chip in it?

This rises the question which Samsung phones have NFC.
Hard to believe it is in the battery - how would the operating system interact with it to capture reads, and write to the chip?

The Skyrocket (not yet activated) and the Galaxy Nexus. The battery on both says "Near Field Communications" on it. And Verizon even put out a notice saying that the NFC chip was in the battery, and that GNex owners switching batteries may have a less than optimal experience trying to use NFC since there is some unique token created between the phone and battery.

The NFC Antenna is in the battery to be on the outer most part of the phone for transmission and receiving and reducing interference since its a low power radio. The phone still needs the NFC chip to work though.
In the International Note teardowns has anybody identified a NFC chip yet?
Ok guys I've found this:
http://www.evernote.com/shard/s3/sh...e9562b56ece4/8f872ca284c0a3013b566ed87866bb1c
It seems the phone has the chip "Infineon PMB5712 RF transceiver"
So, I think theoretically, it SHOULD have NFC support.
Could it be we will see it in ICS?
Has anyone opened his own Note to verify we have this chip as well?
As we all know, the battery is the Note 4 is virtually the same as the one used in Note 3, it's only 20 mah larger in capacity. So why didn't samsung just stay at 3200 mah?
The real reason I found out after many nights of careful analysis is that Samsung does not want use to use Note 3 battery on the Note 4, therefore it would promote their battery sales, which makes up a substantial portion of their income. Samsung engineers obvious is not capable of figuring out how to make a improvement on the battery capacity despite note 4 is so much heavy than the Note 3. So the other goal achieved is to save face, so that they would not get criticism from the public for not improve on the battery capacity, despite there is virtually no piratical benefit makes the phone 19% heavier.
Like if you agree.
I see the shape of the battery has changed significantly.

Note 4:
The Note 4 battery is much skinnier and longer. It is possible that this is just a side effect of having a new internal layout in the phone - the Galaxy Alpha also has a very skinny and long battery.
I actually prefer this design since they no longer have to use the crappy SIM and SD card 2-in-one slot, instead they have the SIM and SD card as a separate slot.
What a strange shape for a phone battery.
The weight is not symmetric.
The shape already change, means even without extra 20mAh, you also can't use Note 3 battery on it.

Yeah, why is Samsung constantly change the back layout? Even generation has different slot places and battery shape and the way you take off your back cover.
One reason the battery shape is different is to allow the SD and SIM cards to be swapped out without removing the battery.
A lot of phones don't have a removable battery... having one is better despite the changes.
Yes, it's true every year samsung makes a new battery size. It's normal. Every year, I sell my previous note with batteries included, and re-buy the new ones. But I would rather that anyways, I sell them for a decent price, use a coupon code every year to get them for $25 a piece, and the newer batteries have a higher capacity since they haven't worn out.
Plus, I get little upgrades, like last year samsung released the battery+charger holder combo for the same $25!
I understand it can be a little annoying, but you wouldn't want a year or two year old battery in your phone when new ones are so cheap anyways.
Also, S5 was the first Samsung to get this long "style" battery. And I hope it looks like the one in that picture, I'm so used to the black, but that shiny silver would be cool. I don't remember seeing that in any unbox videos tho, maybe that's the note edge?
When will XDA get rid off these ridiculous signatures?
Anyway, every year I have to sell or throw away many batteries, what a waste. The batteries are so expensive and bad for the environment.
This is one of the more idiotic posts I've seen in a while. The internal layout of phones constantly change based on developing technology. The addition of the fingerprint scanner and heartbeat sensor in the S5/Alpha/Note 4 along with the new UV and SpO2 sensors in the Note 4 all necessitate changes to internal layout. As SOCs change in power consumption and heat dissipation, there may have to be changes in cooling layouts. The new ISOCELL sensors and flashes may have different sizes. Also with the new metal frames, Samsung may have tweaked the position of the internal radios and GPS.
In fact the S5, Alpha, and Note 4 all share similar battery proportions (tall, narrow batteries) which are quite different from the S4 and Note 3. It's not a huge surprise as all the phones share similar SOCs and sensors.
They change the battery shape to accommodate the hardware changes. It's really nothing more. It would be impossible to use the Note 3 battery with the Note 4 internals and keep the phone shape.

Why does Android phones have to stick with the mini USB? All my phones have been Androids, but after 5 years of use, their mini USB port just starts to decay. It is because the port is cheap and low quality: it is made of single metal stripe. Bought a new phone two months ago and I already feel the connector loosening a bit, it certainly won't last for more than 3 years even though the phone is very durable. I am no an iPhone fan, but hands down this point definitely goes to Apple.

micro USB*
Ports last longer than the cord plugs. I don't disagree there's flaws in the design (mainly reversibility), but at least it's a standard now. It wasn't too long ago where there wasn't a standard. I remember one time a co-worker was given some old Samsung Blackberry-ish phone because his old phone died, but didn't have a charger. We tried 5 different Samsung chargers, and none of them fit.
USB 4.0 will be everything we want it to be...as long as it becomes a truly "universal" standard.
EU require that all phone must have that port to be sell in Europe. Still Apple use Thunderbolt.....

I always get them mixed up, but yeah micro USB. Standardising is a major factor, but I'd rather have a durable phone. It's almost impossible to replace that part since it's usually soldered to the main board, they really want you to buy new phone every 3 years.. Had one of those "wtf is this port"-moments once with an old Nokia, it was worse than Apple's wide dust-vacuum.
Hopefully USB 4.0 will get adapted. I don't think there are any regulations for phone charging ports.

Why ? : mainly because its a standard now and its effective and cheap and safe (remember the FireWire DMA attack)
5 years is a lot of action pretty normal it starts loosening
And the Apple way is no better with only less than 30% market shares just look at the abundance of replacement parts already sold for iPhone 5's it must be for a reason, I was an avid Apple fan for many years and I couldn't believe how brittle they where and how much repair I had to do on theses devices...
It's more like 3 years, my current phone started loosening after 3 months. It is cheap, but not an appropriate component for such a vital role. I am talking about Apple's charging ports only. Apple's products ARE fragile, they're not made for everyday clumsiness. Even though thunderbolts and lightnings are hated by some folks, I would much rather see those standardized than micro-USB or USB 3.0. USB 4.0 is a step to the right direction.

Oh yeah they seem to be pretty easy to replace, I guess my knowledge is based on old models. That made me worry a bit less about breaking my phone. Had to solder one mini-USB once using some uncovered scrap copper wires and it was a hell. Yeah USB2 is the standard, but after 3-7 years we'll might see a change.
I've never had a MicroUSB port (It's Micro, not Mini. MiniUSB is what you find on hard drives and cameras.) decay, not even after 5 years of intensive use...
Yeah the micro-usb port on my S3 is becoming kind of loose now. I used to be able to suspend my phone in the air by holding the charging cable, but now it falls off.

@OP
I've never had one show signs of deterioration either, and the last phone I had was the longest I've had one - just over 2 years. The current one is over 18 months now and is still a perfect fit. That said, I am careful about removing it. I make sure to pull it straight out, with not even a slight angle on it, so there's no reason why it should ever break.
It could be bad luck or carelessness or a bit of both. Just make sure to rule out the latter and you should be fine.
Well, yeah, maybe I swinged it around my head using the cable a few times, but still...

From the reports I have read the Note 8's SOC will be slightly less than that of the SGS8+. If you study the specs there is no way around this. Apart from the price the slightly smaller battery could be the Achilles tendon of this mobile. Only time will tell.
When one looks at the schematics of the Note 8 there is no way Samsung could have done better. Its the space the S-pen takes up that causes the slightly smaller battery.
Having written the above I have been fighting for either larger batteries or new battery technology for years on all these high end Uber flagship mobiles. To some degree they all peeve me as they come with all the bells and whistles then add software and suggest we use said software to downgrade the performance to that of a middle of the range phone or have an SOC time of a few hours? The whole situation from all brands is rather absurd?

How does it compare to S7 Edge?
I had S6+ and hated the battery on it. It was real bad.
Then I got S7 Edge and it can actually make it through work with about 20-30% battery left.
Not sure if anyone saw yet, but DJ Koh (Chief of Samsung Mobile) said in a statement in The Investor that the battery is smaller because of the new 10nm processor that is supposed to be 30% more power efficient...but who knows if that is the real case...we will have to wait and see.

Speculation is greater RAM and better optimised OS give the Note8 an advantage
More ram uses slightly more power on the hardware size but can save it on the software side if apps are suspended in memory rather than being restarted from scratch. At this point there are quite a few reviews, hands-on, etc that show about 4 hours or a little better screen on time. These are people with new phones doing a lot of fiddling so I'd expect that goes up slightly once the new phone fiddle factor is out of the picture. This is enough for me although I'd of been happier with more.

One YouTube reviewer is getting over 6 hours sot. My Nite FE is better than my original Note 7 so i think Samsung have made the OS more battery friendly.

Then he goes on to show two more days both of which are 4 hours of actual use and then explains the 6 was with video looped to run down the battery...
Its absurd that the note series are 'power' devices yet they fit a smaller battery than the S8+!
Covering their arses or what?! This doesn't attract me, having Samsung skimp and play it uber safe for their own gratification. Other phones (including theirs) have larger capacities and are far cheaper. A bigger battery showing they have confidence in their products would not have been rocket science - and would have been what we, its 'power' users expect.
So what they made an error in the note 7 - the note 8 should have been the beast that it just isn't.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8 0 with S Pen 2019 LTE (SM-P205)
1. Unboxing & Impressions - https://youtu.be/Jzic9JeDBdE
I am surprised that this Galaxy Tab A 8.0 is more closer related to Nexus 7 than the previous model it replaces. It should be on a buy list for anyone wanting to replace their Nexus 7 or Tab A 8.0 2015. Other than the limited 32GB storage size, I absolutely think is is a great budget tab at less than 250USD.
2. Camera Photos & Videos - https://youtu.be/nirrHFIWLWw
This tab blew me away by being able to edit videos and export to 4K. It's punching way above the budget price point. Why didn't Samsung give this a minimum 64Gb storage instead of just 32GB. This is a great little budget tab for on the move YouTubers.
Note: All photos 3264 x 2448 dpi and videos 1920 x 1080 @ 288 kbps shot with this tablet, edited and exported to 4K via Cyberlink Powerdirector Android mobile paid app.
3. Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8 0 2019 Water Battery Gaming Test - https://youtu.be/KTR2U4jKXVo
Samsung Tab A 8 0 2015 - 4hrs 10mins (4 years old battery) vs Samsung Tab A 8 0 2019 - 6hrs 10mins (new battery)
4. World's Tallest Rain Waterfall at Jewel Changi Airport - Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 2019 shot & edit this video. Use Cinema FV-5 to unlock the camera dpi. Samsung could had enabled this camera with EIS but they didn't such a waste! https://youtu.be/ykL4lavuEok

5. Unboxing Hands-on a 3rd party Wireless Keyboard Cover for the Samsung Tab A 8.0 with Spen 2019 P200 & P205 models. Simple easy to setup and use bluetooth magnetic keyboard cover. This is most suitable for work on the go paired with the Spen nothing can stop you from finishing your work. https://youtu.be/fUeCzhR6WlY
I just ordered one! It's the only 8" s-pen tablet available and the price is right.
Have been looking for awhile now to replace my nvidia shield tab.

Yes no one else can do a tab with pen like Samsung. They should have given it 4GB Ram + 64GB for the same price. It will be a hot seller if they did it. Just uploaded the other tests have a look & comment in video ok thks!
I just got one and absolutely love it. Best design and features and the perfect size. If only we could soon get root for it.. dream dream..

Yep. This one nailed it! I couldn't ask for a better way to wake up the screen especially when its lying flat. :highfive:
This tab looks really good!
Can it actually make phone calls? (voice calls/ gsm calls)
If it can (and it has the proper earspeaker), then I could see this being my primary phone.
I only ever make calls around once a month anyway.
TLDR; Can this tablet make phone calls like a normal phone?
Yes the LTE model P205. They also sell the wifi model P200 so don't get the wrong model.
Anyone know which region firmware is best for usa?
My tablet is using tgy code which apparently is hong kong region.
I'm not having any issues but if another one is better then I'll download and flash.
is DEX installed?

having issues on transferring storage to SD card its not working.
In the specs it lists an RGB light sensor. Can anyone verify that the screen brightness adjusts automatically based on ambient light? (This is a feature that most inexpensive tablets don't have).
Thanks!

I can confirm that there is an adaptive brightness setting that will dim the screen in low-light conditions.
how to root?
does it have a fingerprint reader? I presume not. I'm going to order anyway, with LTE. I wish Samsung also had a model without the S-pen. I'm not using it, and I could save some cost.
On the other hand, given the confusing array of tablets all named Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8", the presence of the S-pen is a nice distinguishing feature. Yesterday, I was standing in a respectable shop and I was unable to tell whether the tablet I was holding was 2017 or 2019.
Any idea where to buy the tablet? It's not available in the US and the only website I found was some sketchy foreign site that's based in Hong Kong. Would love to have this tablet just to doodle and mess with, and especially since I'm heading to Alaska for vacation in August. Don't wanna bring my laptop (which was $1600) in fear of losing it. The price was really good on the website (it was listed as US $240, I believe), but I don't want to risk it, and Carphone Warehouse doesn't seem to have it yet after I looked around on their site.
If it gets to be too much of a hassle, though, I might just bite the bullet and get the 10.1 size 2016 version just so I could have the S Pen. It's a bit more expensive at $330, but I think it's still a good value, IMO.
hi Pegasus, yesterday I ordered the tablet from presumably the same website you saw:
https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/samsung-galaxy-tab-a-8-sm-p205-3gb-32gb-lte-gray-3.html
I'm in Australia and for us the name of the website ends with AU, as if it was some local outfit. I also saw a similar name ending in UK.
I hope it arrives by end of the month. It is indeed cheap, but no so cheap to leave it in the snow overnight. Is Alaska snow-free at this time of the year ?
The reviews for this website were relatively good. Except there is practically no warranty, so I'm taking a gamble, trusting the Samsung brand.

Hey mate, I was skeptical about TobyDeals since the reviews for it were terrible, but saw a few people on Whirlpool who made the jump and received it.
I took the jump as well last Thursday and ordered the Wifi-only one for 322$, decent price considering Kogan were selling it for 399$.
Got email notifications from TobyDeals every single day regarding the order, and was dispatched on Friday.
Just received the parcel today, haven't opened it yet since I'm at work but will do when I get home.
I can feel that it is decently bubble-wrapped inside the parcel.
That's really fast shipping, way quicker than most sellers on AliExpress. Very impressed so far. Will definitely look into buying from them again, their price include GST and are really competitive.
AliExpress you now have to pay GST on top of the advertised price...
I reckon you'll have yours on Friday/Monday, if Toll Express doesn't stuff you around. I've had some shockers with them haha...
Will update you as soon as I open it
> the Wifi-only one for 322$ <
The LTE difference was less than $50, so I ordered the one with a SIM card. I don't intend to use it a lot outside the home, but I shall see. Perhaps I'll have a $10 Boost SIM in it for those rare occasions when I take it outside.
