Me, Myself & I - Introductions

My name is Bernard Gill. I am a retired businessman, who has been trying to keep pace with the fast paced digital world. I am always looking to better my opportunity to participate/take advantage of the latest advancements of the digital age. I have been present and witnessed the explosion of computer technology since the late 70's (manager at Radio Shack) and internet access since the late 80's (digital dictation and voice file transfer). I don't have any special talents, but I am always interested in keeping pace in this ever-changing digital world.

Welcome to XDA
It's been a fast roller coaster ride, no?
RS used to have some cool devices... fun times.
Remember Lafayette Radio Electronics stores?
Their catalog was fun. Had their passive quad matrix decoder, reciever and bookshelf speakers.

htc tilt vs n95 8gig

what do u guys think about these two phones whos better? or whats better?
imho it all comes down to what 3th party programs one want
tilt, if only the video drivers were included.
They're fully incomparable.
1. If you need MUCH better audio / quality (!) A2DP / video / MUCH better camera / MUCH better, 3D accelerated gaming / being lightweight (!!!), get the Nokia. It's way better in these respects.
2. If you DO know you MUST have Windows Mobile and don't want to play / the low-quality A2DP and the considerably higher weight isn't a problem (that is, you're looking for a "strictly" business machine with almost non-existing entertainment capabilities), get the Kaiser.
BTW, there is another, relate dthread of the same subject in this forum; use the forum search engine.
*pops his head round the corner*
My Kaiser provides me with more than enough entertainment, I watch films, listen to music through my bluetooth headphones, and browse the net. It also has the "wow" factor compared to other phones/Pda's (even if features of it don't run as well as other phones/pda's)

Ever compared the A2DP quality of the MS BT stack to that of the competition? ;-)

List here what exactly you want to do and I tell you which of the two you should get. It's mostly about entertainment / camera / weight vs. built-in keyboard / Windows Mobile / touchscreen.

Personally, I prefer the N95 over the Kaiser because I love the unmatched multimedia features, the flawless answering machine / call recording (which the Kaiser miserably fails to deliver), gaming capabilities (3D hardware accelerator!) and the camera (and, I also have other Windows Mobile devices, should I need to use Windows Mobile for some reason). The crippled multimedia / gaming, bad camera and, as far as using the phone is concerned, the lack of call recording support of the Kaiser are a showstopper for me.
HOWEVER, if you DO know you absolutely MUST have a touchscreen or Windows Mobile, you should go the Kaiser route.

pocketpc have been an active platform for way longer then there was anything called symbian or anything called java at all
of cause it all comes down to what programs one needs but i dare say that there are more pocketpc arm based applications developed then symbian or java apps for phones
I would have a hard time dealing with no touch screen. I got used to graphite writing back in the palm days and it would be hard to do without, especially losing both that and the qwerty keyboard. I have had one other symbian phone too and was not thrilled with either the UI or the 3rd party program selection. I think it has gotten much better since though. I actaully have been keeping my eye on if the Sony W960i is going to make it stateside, but it isn't looking good.
I am most hopeful for the iMate 9502, but may wind up with the LG KS20, once it comes down to a reasonable price (and actually starts shipping??).
What about the MWg Atom Life Windows Mobile 6 Edition. Anyone know anything about this? Looks like No GPS or BT though.

Ummm... I don't know what you're talking about - my kaiser is a freaking entertainment facility. I have excellent GPS, about 20-25 great games that I love to cut my spare time with, I watch movies when I'm in traffic, I watch Discovery channel on it, with new camera app I take excellent movies (even at night, in Las Vegas I filmed a great movie about dancing fountains) and photos.. When I go fishing, I play music for me and my friends over the speakerphone...
That's only etnertainment.. I'm not even talking about amazing upgradability and customization of Windows Mobile. And the fact that it fully syncs with Outlook, and trust me - I was an Outlook hater about 5 years ago. Outlook 2007 is amazing and I love it.
I mean what else do you need from the PPC? To have hot sex with you?

Which games do you play? I bought the Kaiser thinking I would get to play some SNES games on it as a bonus, but I was greatly dissapointed in that matter.
Well, I wonder how you got you Kaiser to film at night. I tried to film some new years fireworks and that filming went terribly bad. You can count the average fps just by watching it ( like 1/2frames every second). Every other phone/camera there filmed at least a regular movie.
The speakerphone crakles all the time, I can't really appreciate music through it.
The N95 series is great minus the build quality.
I prefer the Kaiser overall because it's a better PDA, but they are still very different.

Here's some cool games that run perfectly on Kaiser:
MoreGames Legends of Orions (with addon)
MoreGames Nanobotz (both games have very cool graphics)
Arcades Collection (about 5-6 games)
Bubble Shooter (don't confuse with bubble breaker)
Doom
Contra
Palm Heroes
Pocket Transport Tycoon Deluxe (free and have awesome graphics)
Pocket Hexen
Pocker Challenge
Pool Challenge
Rats
Tomb Raider (plays like a charm)
Wolfenstein 3D (no problems whatsoever, insane FPS)
Age of Empires (works perfectly, very high FPS)
you just have to look for it. Some games won't run well on Kaiser even with drivers.

I don't know what to say - It's been at night (around 11 or so), on the street, only light was the hotel in the far back, and some lighted fountains in the foreground. I can't count the FPS, but I can estimate it to be around 25-30. I can upload the video once I cut it, as it is - it's 11MB (about 5 minutes long).

Dunno what to say either, I had Wizard before this, and although Wizard's speakerphone was just insane (best one I've heard), Kaiser's is not that bad at all.
Wouldn't a better comparison be between the HTC Kaiser/Tilt and Nokia E90..? Those are the flagship enterprise communicators for each company.
I've cut that video to a smaller size and uploaded several of them.
Here's the topic about that:

What is the "xda" forum of symbian?

Xda-developers is the biggest windows mobile community, but what is the biggest symbian forum? I know nothing about symbian but would like to start learning about it.
my-symbian.com I suppose... but it's nowhere near as good as xda-dev.
yeh, I would also like to know more about it...
Like does it have something like activesync for syncing with outlook on the pc? And what's it's equal to Internet Sharing?
Lol, let me hazard a guess: is it due to the crap graphic drivers and the inability of this platform to exhibit anything of graphic value, as compared to Symbian which has recently proven itself worthy of Quake 3?
I had an N73 in the past before which I had WinMo smartphones, and after dabbling deep into Symbian, WinMo is way better; just give it a few months and let's see what comes out.
For syncing, there is Nokia's own software (when I used it last) called Nokia PC Suite, which is crap. It's like a whole slew of applications, half of which are never needed and the Suite itself is nested on the computer's RAM. Not sure about Internet Sharing since I've never needed it.

hahaha yes! Just based off observations... Nokia has always had some of the fastest emulators, fastest ports, the GREATEST doom port! The last few years I've always been asking "why isnt this GBA emulator as fast as Nokia's?" "Why can't my Snes play like that one Nokia phone?" And of course... WHY DOESNT DONT DOOM HAVE MUSIC??? nokia phone's have music when they play doom!"
I actually dont know too much about symbian, if it can play quake 3 or whatnot, but i do know it can play gba, snes, and DOOM. That's why I'd like to visit a symbian forum, to see where they are at in comparison to windows mobile. With that new N97 comming out, Touchscreen, AND uses s60, that sounds pretty good to me.
look at this comparison:

If we could get something like that, but with WinMo :3
bump.
I'd just like to say that my next phone will most likely be the Nokia n82.

90mb accesible ram
stereo loudspeakers
3.5mm audio output
FM radio
GPS /w Agps
5 Megapixel camera with Xenon flash!
let me just show you some videos showing it's impressive camera + video recording.

Here is a concert:

Here you can see it's amazing shutter speed. It can capture a still shot of a spinning fan blade, while the N95 makes it appear blurry:

Here is a picture the N82 took in the pitch dark:
compare it to this pic the N95 took in the pitch dark:
Check out this album on flickr showing lots of pictures taken by different users with their nokia N82's.
http://www.flickr.com/groups/nokian82usergroup/
The image quality of the N82's camera is just amazing, compatible to a digital camera.
The N82 will also support quake 3 at full detail and framerate with motion sensors (optional) and buttons. Of corse it will play all the emulators such as GBA and SNES at full framerate as well!
You and Quake 3 lol. Seems like you really like the game; i've seen you mention the game throughout many of your posts
Device does look pretty stellar (specs-wise).

lol. Yes, and the price isn't terribly expensive. $300. About half of what phones cost now. It's a nice sturdy bar phone, so it will get me by until a REALLY good windows mobile phone comes out.
haha yeah it seems like every electronic I buy now must be able to play quake 3.

Fantastic automobile tech - Electromagnetic suspension

I didn't think too much about this tech till I watched the video. Near the end of the video, you will see what I mean. Something the Knight Rider would gush at.
The video is toward the bottom of the page and is the Bose suspension video

Hahaha...same here. The local gov deliberately lets the roads go to hell to beef up the local auto repair businesses...lol That means they are generally rough to the point of swallowing a whole car in some extreme cases.
I wonder if that suspension tech would be able to leap over such holes...LOL
Haha.
It will certainly make drink driving a lot easier.....cup of coffee I mean, of course
Less spillage

Fantasically! According to that demonstration...hehe. This is pretty much a more advanced version of an active suspension system where the struts are electrically controlled. It's actually basically rather simple in design, but the complexity comes from integrating electronics and all the associated hardware...like a CPU and all the sophisticated software and algorithms. Apparently the demonstrated system is using some kind of distance detection system...maybe infrared, radar or laser based...because the car actually jumps up like a horse before getting to the obstacle. Either that or it is a well created photoshop video where a ramp was made to look like a wall.
How did the car like jump on the last bit? :confused;

[Q] Acid Pro like app?

I'd like to turn my Shield into a music production tool. I love Sony's Acid Pro PC software and am having trouble finding a similar app for Android. Does one even exist?
Kind of depends on how powerful of a media processor you want. I personally use DJ Mix Pads. Some other good ones are Loop Pads, and Drum Pads.
If you don't mind spending $20 CAD FL Studio Mobile is pretty good. I have personally used the desktop version and it is awesome!
FL is probably the closest you will find.
Edit: URL for FL Studio http://www.image-line.com/flstudiomobile/android.php/
There is One extremely good app for music composition on Android :
CAUSTIC 3
It works perfectly on the Shield Tablet, and there is no latency (set the latency at lowest and the audio driver at Opensl ES)
Caustic 3. Really powerful, regular updates and no commercial rip off to get the next version (I bought Caustic 1 and have had 2 and 3 via updates). The tool is very well priced for the type of app (a lot cheaper than fruity loops) and there is a wealth of instructional videos on youtube as well as vibrant community on their forums.
Thanks!
All of this information has been amazing. I've downloaded them all and while FL Studio is exactly what I was looking for (and more!) I've also gotten the other suggestions and they have expanded my production abilities ten fold. I love this community :victory:

Best VR experiences? apps? for Samsung Gear VR?

Hopping onto the VR train again. Tried it out on a Samsung S7 Edge and it would overheat... a couple years later, I now have the Samsung Note 8 and giving it another whirl. Just curious what you guys think of must-have apps and/or must-see experiences for Samsung Gear VR.
I'll share some of my experiences:
- All the animated movies. They're all good and have the same formula of cute that just works, like how Pixar does. Rose, Invasion!, Crow: The Legend, Asteroids! are all pretty good and I recommend them highly.
- Gala VIP Shows. It's really just a collaboration of videos with artists... some free, but most you'll have to pay for. Great way to get into VR and see how good it can be.
- Epic Roller Coasters. It was cool at first but is kind of meh now IMO. Graphics are okay but you still get the fun of going on a virtual roller coaster.
- Angest. Highly recommended. Controls are easy and the game has a great psychologically-eerie feel to it but no jump scares. Graphics were pretty good and although there's not too much you can do with just a touchpad, it was just enough to keep you entertained.
- SpaceWalk VR. The gameplay is very limited, and the graphics aren't top notch, but this is still a pretty darn good intro to space VR. Very nifty!
- Shooting Showdown 2. There's not much here, but it is still a guilty pleasure of mine to fiddle with a VR shooting game. Very simple and works with the touchpad. I feel like I'm going to give myself whiplash each time I have to reload quickly, but it's still a lot of fun to play.
- Minecraft. It is worth buying and is the first VR app I purchased. There are two modes: one is just a classic view of being in a room with a "TV" that you play MC on (so what's the point?), but the real money is when you can stomach being IN Minecraft in a first-person view. I admit, the "classic" controls are a little nauseating but it is still a very, very awesome application of VR: placing yourself IN a game. With the nature of it being a sandbox game and Creative mode, you can do anything.
- Blade Runner 2020. Not bad, but not great. It's basically just a short experience and the graphics aren't fantastic. I wish they did more with this.
- Tomb Raider VR. Another short experience, but this one felt so much cooler. I wish it was longer.
- Conflict0. A short game, but being able to put yourself in a mech is pretty cool.
- Notes on Blindness. A unique way to show the world from the perspective of a blind man's point of view. It's kind of a short documentary but even if you're not interested in documentaries, I highly recommend at least giving it a bit of your time.
If you've noticed, most of these are free, and that's because I'm cheap. However, it would be nice to know what's worth buying. I heard "Virtual Virtual Reality" may be fun thanks to its cheeky humor.
This is cool! I like to play in VR games. I know that there is a lot of intimate games on SLR, https://www.sexlikereal.com. What do you think about this site? I know that this can become an obsession, so I look only occasionally. There are passionate videogames, you must register to confirm your age and get an account.
Nature Trek is a must have for me, totally absorbing, now on an s10+ and noticed much better graphics over the s8(+), even better than the quest. Netflix is good, keep wanting to put my feet on the damn coffee table! Bait is fun and therapeutic, would never fish in the real world, but enjoy this. Dead and buried is a good zombie shooter, Rush is great fun and also enjoy Ocean Rift.
