Banking/GPay - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Ok so I've been outta the rooting community for a while. Going to be picking up a Pixel 4XL. If the bootloader is unlocked does banking and GPay work? And if so does rooting affect that? Thanks in advance.

Same question!
I am coming from Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite (root+custom OS) and it seems that the Pixel is not that much better... If any better?
Considering unlocking bootloader and playing with it. Hopefully battery life would go up (so much better before...) and it would feel snappier. Having weird bugs like disappearing quick access bar or missing labels from launcher.

New (soon) owner of Mi Mix

Coming from mi 5s plus, I was looking for more screen space, so the mi mix 2 or 2s was a no go for me better the 6.4 of the mi mix 1.
Very excited, will read through the forum.
Anyone willing to sintetize what shall I do first, (other Rom, Google camera, magisk, etc...?)
In the past I always rooted phones, but I kind of prefer not to, unless there is a huge advantage in doing it (my last mi 5s plus I never rooted nor unlocked, and I was perfectly fine)

If you can live with miui, stay where you are if you don't want to unlock bootloader.

I want but only for a good reason. Playing with different rom is not a good reason for me, if they do not bring any substantial improvements

I'll stick with my original answer
I ran MIUI quite happily on my MIX for several months, then finally got fed up with the constant updates to the bloatware that's preinstalled and can't be disabled. If you are intent on sticking with MIUI at least try a custom launcher (e.g. Action launcher) and definitely update the stock camera app.

Oh yes I do have Nova Launcher.
Which camera app you recommend?
Ideally you want the google hdr+ camera; there's a port of it in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/how-to/miui-9-stable-magisk-xposed-t3705951 but I don't know if that's the one for you. Ask google!
Also I would recommend buying a clear gel case for your MIX; the case that comes with it is perfectly fine, but it hides the beauty within, and I think my clear case was all of about £1.40 from amazon.

What is the difference between the Pixel Experience and the Pixel3ROM?

Just curious as I'm not sure which one to install on my mi 8
pixel3rom has no customization option. but from what im reading pixel3rom has some big problems atm. so better go with experience.
Fair enough I'll probably install that one then

Right now I'm using OP5T. Thought of buying 6T but after looking at the vivo nex, I've attracted by it's design. BBK is a brand which owns the Vivo, Oneplus and Oppo. And the launch of OP7 is just weeks away with the design which I was expecting it to be. And I'm a guy who doesn't like selfies not gonna use the popup camera a lot so no worries about the mechanical part in my phone.

If you don't bother the pop-up cameras, On previous itself you can go with vivo nex or Oppo find X. why you should wait for OP 7 pro.

I'm a user that came from the 6T to the NEX S Global. It's a great phone, gorgeous if you ask, however 1+'s OS is way better and VIVO's update is really slow, also you can't unlock the bootloader. We're still on Android 8.1 while the chinese version is already on Pie.
It's a great phone, I really enjoy it, but I'll probably go the 7 Pro because I'm afraid how VIVO will handle future updates.

An Oxygen OS from Oneplus, you can get a smooth Android experience. And Still you can experience the stock android with some additional features in Oxygen OS. I never used that Color OS and all.
I'm a user both Vivo Nex S from last summer and 2.5 months I'm owed also Dual display as well.
Chinese version both of them.
I'm really enjoying both phones never bothered me ios style Funtouch and I really appreciate many features and customization option offer natively that Oxygen does not offer.
With Pie Vivo offer much more customization with AOD that Oxygen not ever had.
Also maintain battery saver mode with location while oxygen removed badly that option.
Also Vivo offers saperate notification sound alarm from ringing soung alarm very convenient and useful feature always appreciated when using Samsung devices.
Also one great feature is the dynamic lockscreen magazine with very rich wallpapers each time go lock screen you get wonderful and high quality photos.
To me Vivo of screen gestures works much better and user friendly than Oxygen does.
As long you setup the phone properly(removed Chinese bloatware very easily through setting menu that Vivo let you uninstalled almost everything, and some other stuff through adb) you are gone enjoy super smooth experience, exceptional stability and comfort and great battery performance.
Never had issue with notification as well as long uninstalled Vivo battery management witch is very aggressive and give all permission to app to work in background as by default Vivo is killing them.
The only benefits of Oxygen compared to Vivo or Oppo is the ability of rooting your device and all the potential open with that freedom.
For example I'm a big fan of substratum themes and testing several mod, tweak and custom rom and one of the basic reasons of buying oneplus 7 pro.
I really like have under full control the software experience.
Of course I'm buying it because I like full screen experience without any stupid notch or punch holes that I hate and never had issue with pop up camera (actually rarely I'm using front facing camera so I prefer being always hidden)
And of course the huge battery capacity of 4000 and the very promising new screen are all give me extra motivation of purchasing 7 Pro.
So as you can see I'm big fan of BBK group and their smartphone and prefer it over Samsung or Huawei devices as it's closest to my needs much more and really like of testing new design approach offering with unique character

Yes, Some of the features that you mentioned is not available in Oxygen OS. But everyone knows that Oxygen OS software smooth experience is way better than other BBK group phones. Many people including me doesn't like the Color OS and funtouch OS like they're copying stuffs from iOS but in Oxygen OS you can get an unique software experience .

As I said I'm not having issues both skin like them the same for what their offer.
I'm totally disagree for smoothness experience, both skins are the same.
Never experienced any lag with Funtouch or loosing smoothness over time.
Same setup, same app, same usage both skins.
As for copying ios it's matter of personal preferences only.
Some people like it some others not.
It doesn't have any impact on smoothness or stability.

If the in screen fingerprint reader is the same as used in the 6T get ready to be dissapointed, you are spoiled with the FP reader on the 5T

Nothing is "wrong" with it, it's just a much different experience than the lightning fast 5T reader.

+1
Mine is fine too
What issue are you facing??
I often wonder if people who complain about FP readers know that you can register the same thumb/finger multiple times for better detection. 5 digits can be registered and they don't all have to be different.
Mines absolutely bloody fantastic as well. Can't complain.
can't complaint, man
! Can't complaint at all!
One complaint is when your finger is moist/wet it wont register. Tell me yours dont suffer from that?
Dont get me wrong I love my 6T, and I'm going to get the Pro, but I hope the 2nd gen is better than the 1st.

Why is your finger moist/wet, is it a regular thing for you? Kinda of like people complaining it doesn't have an IP rating. Instead how about you just don't take your phone for a swim.

General The Problems with the Mi 11 and Xiaomi Phones.

Hi !
Little Disclaimer :
- This thread is based on my own opinion about the device and Xiaomi as a smartphone maker.
- The best thing that you can do is make your own opinion about this.
Let's start.
My concerns about Mi 11 starts with the battery which is pretty bad with MIUI. (i bought this phone at the end of January brand new, so it's not aging battery stuff)
Second is thermals, this is really something that touched my user experience here, this phone can gets VERY HOT. 40 degres on regular usage sometimes.
(most of the time you can use the device proprely, i'm talking about heat but it may not be as a concern, tho it is for components :/)
Those may be little concerns for some people, tho i picture this like that : This phone should carry me to at least 4 Generations of Android and Smartphones.
So here was my device concerns about it, it may seem stupid at first glance but those are already pretty big reasons for me.
Next is MIUI and Xiaomi Choices, and oh boy.
Let's start simple, Unlocking a Xiaomi Smartphone.
For after market selling reasons and more, Unlocking a Xiaomi Smartphone will need 1/2 weeks of waiting :
First reason is bricking, Xiaomi dosen't want people to brick their phones because unexperienced users wanted to adventure for more. (Will talk about bricking later)
Second is Modified MIUI, Some not very serious sellers were getting some Modified MIUI ROM device and selling them without knowing about it. (slight privacy concern ^^)
And really, i don't see how waiting time could help!
People are owning their phones and can do whatever they want with them, and this will not change anything... People are just going to wait then get their phones unlocked later.
And for After market selling, it is a sort of fix but someday, shady importers are gonna get around it. And if you think about it, there is way more better ways to limit this.
Now it's brick time.
I'm not gonna go much in detail about Soft Brick, because there is not much to talk about here.
EDL Brick have tho, and it's not simple stuff.
But yeah, EDL Bricking.
Xiaomi have pretty nice reputation about it
First of, MIUI 13 and the Mi 11 Lineup. If you don't know, some devices we're reported bricking after installing MIUI 13, and those we're most of the Mi 11 Lineup.
For some perspective, Google got the Pixel 6 FP Sensor bricked on a Pixel Update. Not very cool but they recovered.
Samsung too got S20 screens bricked on an update, yes. lol
But bricking the full device is a whole other level, and with how poor Xiaomi's EDL Mode is (will talk about it later), this dosen't come nice together.
Also, as a DLC for this , Indian Release of this faulty version also bricked Cameras.
So yeah, MIUI dosen't seem to deal very nice with it.
Tho there is a whole other problem, HOW EDL Mode works on Xiaomi Phones !
Basically, Xiaomi dosen't want you to recover from EDL yourself. Their EDL Mode needs a login that only them have.
Tho you can still get around it, some people are selling an unbrick login for your device for money, they are probably Xiaomi employees and Xiaomi probably dosen't want them to exist.
What if your phone turns off on EDL?
You need to open your device and connect two EDL Pin points TOGETHER ! Yes, warranty.
And to finish, MIUI.
MIUI is in a very bad state right now in my opinion, i found 12.5 releases pretty good but 13 is terrible. (in my opinion)
I don't like how global releases gets nothing of what chinese one has, MIUI 13 Global is reskined 12.5 on A12 but with no monet theming.
The bloatware is worse than Samsung back in the day, and results in terrible battery life.
And MIUI exclusives aren't very special, AI Enhancements for imaging are mostly limited to MIUI Apps so i don't see how it could be useful.
So here it is, some informations may be incorrect because i'm mostly what i know about it, tho it is good enough to make a proper opinion.
And remember, making yours will be much better! The Mi 11 isn't a bad device in my mind, it has the potential to please a lot of people i think!
Thanks for reading all of this.
Have a good day!

Totally agree my main concern are thermals and battery
On top of that SD 888 doesn't make things better also I had an aging 5 years moto x play and wanted to buy a flagship that will carry me at least 3 years, but guess what it was the worst year to buy an Android flagship with the SD 888
That's why I'll try Pixel Experience instead of MIUI.

It's a really nice designed phone with beautiful display and speakers. And that's about it. I don't have battery issues because I tweak a lot and I end my day with 40 - 20 % battery left depending of usage. Cameras are bad or let's say not so good. It with scam mod they are great. But my main sensor is blurred now and only focus when I tapped it. Which is disappointing and annoying. MIUI 13.... Dear God... How come such a smart people work there and they manage to **** things up instead making things better? None of my apps (messenger, Viber and Whatsapp) save sound ringtones if I change them , they revert to default after every phone restart... This one is so annoying it makes me wanna throw the phone in to the river. The other one is removing force dark mode from developer options! Bad decision! I am thinking to go back to 12.5 which have that option , but since I hard bricked my device EDL locked, nothing on the screen, no fastboot no recovery and I had to pay 35$ to flash and fix it , I don't have balls to try to downgrade to 12.5.... I am not having fun with miui13. This devise requires lot of tweaking, which is fun but sometimes painful. All in all just those 2 major things for me , can't force dark mode on certain apps (hard bricked trying to) and can't change sounds of messenger Viber and Whatsapp.... Maybe there are more things but now they are not on my mind. I am also searching for new device.. any suggestions are appreciated
Oh yeah, still can't use gestures with nova launcher....

Have a good day!

nice but i'm talking about global miui
My wife use it, it's ok too
Mi 11 is easily the worst 2021 flagship.
Bad battery life, and MIUI is just awful.

If you are rooted you can install the Magisk module 'No Navbar v1.0' from Abdulwahab and use FNG without any problem.

Why you keep posting same rant again and again, we all know you cant handle it ? Wipe your tears and change forum. I suggest Doro or similar for you.

Question Pixel 7

I'm wondering if it pays to get the Pixel 7, considering all the problems that i've been reading about.? Would it be a good idea to root this phone, if i get one? Thanks for any feedback.
stock runs great and you can disable what apps you don't want. i hadd no problems with it so far. so its not neccesary to root if you dont want to but it fun to try diffrent roms.
I just moved from a oneplus 6 (5 years!) to a 9 Pro and then the P7. Each step was a marked improvement. Only kept the 9 Pro for a week as it's app throttling was too severe and I really don't like flashing custom ROMs on current handsets. I see none of the issues typically seen in Pixel 7 reddit posts. Maybe a little warm during charging but less than most rapid charge devices. I disabled Wellbeing and and google home, otherwise prefect out of the box and remains so. Get a case. The new pixel is like holding onto a smallmouth bass.
The difference between QHD and refresh rate is minimal except for the reduced battery life with the Pro, so I am happy with the 7 and will keep it a long time.
I preordered mine, and have not had one issue since getting it. To me it's the perfect phone. All phones will have some issues with some units, but overall I think it's worth the investment.

Feb patch has been pretty stable. January was poo poo. Pixel 7 itself? awesome, recommend it. Software clean camera immaculate. Recent feb patch also stabilize the phone and its battery life.
I had a Pixel 6 and it was a real PITA. Stock ROM was buggy and overall I just did not like the device. Anyway I got a Pixel 7 and for me it's a much more nice device. I guess I will keep it for quite a long time. Usually I buy a new/used flagship device every six months. But I'm tired of that behavior pattern.
I tried various custom ROMs and Graphene OS on my Pixel 7, but I did not really like the ROMs/OS so I went back to stock ROM, and for me that is the best thing at the moment. It's very smooth, fast and problems/bugs are rare. I'm still in love with the Pixel camera system btw.
My Pixel 7 stock ROM setup/stuff I did
Used Pixel Flasher to flash the stock ROM and to root with Magisk. Pixel Flasher is awesome, making things way more easy if you understand the concept (for monthly updates it's great too)
Flashed Kirisakura Kernel to have at least some tweaks and it runs great (used Franco Kernel Manager to flash the kernel)
Debloated the system (getting rid of useless Google Apps stuff) using Android Debloater
In Magisk having the Powerhint Module (for the kernel), Safety Net Fix, and Sui for App Ops
App Ops by Xingchen & Rikka for privacy (editing system/user app permissions with more detail)
Adaway (systemless hosts file / Magisk) with extra hostfile sources for adblocking and privacy
Custom DNS provider for privacy
The P7 is a great phone. I'm not sure what "all the problems" are that you mentioned. Arguably the finger print sensor still isn't the greatest, but it works well enough and the phone also has face unlock if you want to use that.
I had a P6 prior to the P7 and the P7 is noticeably better than the P6. Honestly it surprised me when I got the P7 because I wasn't really expecting any differences. (I took advantage of the Google pricing and trade in values and upgraded for $20 plus tax - I wasn't really looking to upgrade from the P6, but couldn't pass up on that deal. Now I am very happy that I did upgrade).
Prior to the P6, I rooted every phone I owned for the last decade or so. I didn't feel the need to root on the P6 and I haven't felt the need to root the P7. Honestly at this point, rooting would cause me more heartburn than solving problems for me. Perhaps other people are different, but there isn't really anything that I need that requires rooting.
