Lens extends on camera activation and startup

anyone with this otherwise great device will be familiar that upon boot up and camera activation the lens automatically extends.
Sadly, in my case the lens has broken as a result of
1/apps that activate the camera programatically, pushing itsself out of its car cradle physically damaging the lens assembly
2/ Power on lens extension when held in hand like a phone, lens in palm of hand.
I emailed to samsung and suggested they use a proximity sensor ( very common on phones) mounted on the front of the device ( lens side) to check the path the lens will take during extension is clear, or possibly even using data from the focus beam. I suggested that If it cant extend safely then it should not, rather than risk damage to the motors inside the lens. Samsung could actually apply this to all their cameras.
I also suggested the default on power up should be to not activate the camera app, which extends the lens ( after all this is a hybrid device) it may be possible for devs to alter this behaviour ?
It also occurs to me that developers who make device specific apps for this device could win some serious respect if they used the accelerometer Z reading to ensure the camera wont activate when device is lens down/screen up avoiding the lens causing the phone to do pushups which also bends usb connectors.
I know this belongs in the development forums for this device but I can't access them due to having less that 10 posts. Hope someone can add it for me Many apps can activate the camera programatically, it's worthy of consideration as a lens fix costs $200.00 and is not covered by wararanty.

Better yet, if someone could discover a way to make it NOT startup in the camera app. Then the lens would only come out when I actually run the app.

I admire your enthusiasm for making these suggestions to Samsung but they will fall on deaf ears. The simple and certainly quickest solution is put an extra option in settings "Toggle camera on startup ON/OFF"

yep, that would solve the startup issue but any app can activate the camera programatically, meaning they can start the camera according to any variable, time, location, force etc.
Initial quote to repair was 150.00, but It also now appears the motherboard is damaged, since it is behind the lens, so now the cost to fix is $450.00, just a few dollars short of its replacement cost.
This device can damage its self without you having to touch it.
Pretty serious problem

That's a bit odd. The same thing happened to me more than once but there seems to be some sort of protection against damage as the lens of my camera goes back in after hitting an obstacle (they only need to monitor the current drawn by the zoom motor).

Interesting, I'm sure that mine does not do that, the motor seems quite strong and pushed as hard as it can, perhaps they rectified it in later versions, I bought mine Christmas 2012 which I assume was the first "model " as such. I get the lens error, but it stays out, only returning when you power it off. funnily enough I'm pretty careful where and how i leave it positioned

Nexus 6 Camera - Blurry in landscape only

My Nexus 6 seems to have an issue from day one and is still present with the 5.0.1 update and the most recent camera update. I'm unlocked and unencrypted.
When using the camera, any camera app, the viewfinder and ultimately the photo/video comes out blurry when shooting in landscape. If i shoot in portrait, the viewfinder and the photos are sharp.
In landscape is starts clear and sharp and then quickly changes to being blurry. Even resting the phone on a still surface it is always blurry. Lighting conditions or shooting mode don't make any difference.
I attached two photos showing the difference, both handheld.
It's almost like something is wrong with the OIS in landscape. Hardware issue?

touch to focus... it actually begins to focus and then it looks like the sensor is shaking on the screen and shows up in the photos. I have no issues at all when in portrait mode.
This even happens when the camera is sitting on a still surface so its not my hand shaking.

This is with the camera sitting stationary on my desk and a 10/sec timer

mine did the exact same thing. the OIS never fully settles due to a hardware defect. i got a new one from T-Mo and returned my defective one and the problem has gone away.

Thanks for the info and helping verify its a hardware issue. guess I will be calling T-MO then. Where they hard to convince in replacing it?

i was lucky to call and complain about it within the 14 day buyers remorse period so they could send me a brand new one instead of a possible refurbished one, but it was like pulling teeth with them. i had to explain that it was a hardware issue several times before they agreed to send me another one. after several phone calls later in the next few days, i finally got someone who was willing to do it then and there while on the phone.

I have about the same problem with my more then 1 year old Nexus 6. After my nexus 6 fell of my bed (with a tpu case and no visible damage) it seems that i can only get the camera to properly focus while holding it at 90 degrees (so with the camera sensor towards my right hand) and while holding it at 180 degrees (so upside down) 0 and 270 degrees (camera towards left hand) the camera focusses, during the focussing it's focused for like a fraction of second and then the blurriness/vibration starts, in both camera and video mode.
So thanks for this topic, i guess i'm ordering a replacement camera module.

Replacing the camera module has fixed my focusing problem. The module itself was around 13 dollars on aliexpress. For anyone that's facing focussing/ois problems with the camera, you can easily replace the module yourself.

Both cameras and Flash doesn't work after drop

Hello everyone, I'd like to say thanks for checking out my thread :good:
About a week ago, I dropped my phone into a ceramic floor with the back facing down. The drop sounded loud however the phone looks intact.
A few checks later, I can confirm the phone is OK, except for both cameras and the flash.
The back camera doesn't work (the Camera app just crashes, Diagnostic shows Camera Not Connected), the front camera doesn't display anything (Diagnostic shows completely black picture) and the flash does not turn on.
I'm currently sourcing parts for testing, but I'm wondering if it's possible that the software may be the cause as well?
Although the phone didn't restart (it still worked fine, minutes before it dropped) I wanted to make sure.
Also, as a double check, I tried OpenCamera and it shows black. There's no "switch camera" option so I think it's showing the front camera.

Your motherboard is toast. I have a Z2 with water damage. At first it seemed like the camera module got damaged, but on closer inspection, it has the same problem as your Z3+, all things camera related stopped working. There's no easy fix, you either re-ball whatever chips got loose or replace the motherboard.

Maybe you need to replace only the camera, because I had approximately same problem

replace the back camera will solve this problem or must replace both front and back camera?

Focus Issues on Anything Farther Than a Couple of Meters - Mi A2 Camera

I recently started taking more pictures with the phone and I realized the camera on my MI A2 has serious troubles focusing on anything that's farther than a couple of meters. The camera takes spectacular pictures at close range but stuff that's just a bit farther away goes AoF really easily.
I noticed in a couple of posts that people were complaining about the camera dying on them and I started wondering whether I got a faulty camera module or I'm just pushing the limits of this device's camera? Has anybody else experienced a similar problem?
I'm currently posting from my laptop but I could add a few samples taken with the phone if it helps you people understand the issue. Notice that camera2api is currently not active and I'm on MIUI 10 (but the issue was also present on stock - in fact the only way for me to get sharp photos was to activate camera2api, download open camera, activate face recognition and let it auto-focus, which is what makes me think it might be a software rather than a hardware issue, since the camera can focus through open camera).

Doogee S55 camera issue

Hello,
So I have this rugged everything-proof ip68 standard android phone Doogee S55. It has not had any major impact or anything, just few casual drops on the ground (these should be nothing for such a smartphone, right?)
Anyway, out of sudden, I have noticed that the rear camera photo quality seriously deteriorated and it can not focus anymore, for example a picture of a passport has unreadable text which was perfect some time ago.
Also, you can see this random ticks on every photo shot by it. Please look at the attachment.
My question is (assuming it's real hardware damage and I cannot fix it at home)
whether it's possible to programmatically disable one of the dual rear cameras and only use a single one? (Hopefully just one camera is damaged)
Other ideas are welcome as well
