SM-G973U slow Data Speed - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Hi Guys
I have a Snapdragon Galaxy S10 SM-G973U that I bought as a refurbished device in Switzerland. I think it is an ATT Unlocked phone. Phone calls and Text Messages work flawlessly on a Swiss Carrier, but I have never had an OTA Update and the Dataspeed of LTE is always at around 0.2Mbps download. Does anyone know why it is that slow and what I can do to resolve this? I'm really in love with the S10 but the dataspeed is quite annoying.
I hope anyone knows more than I do because i'm curious what's going on.
Thanks Guys

You're using a USA phone on a non-US carrier. My guess is that you're not really connected to LTE on the ideal frequencies, so you're only getting 3G support. You'll have to look into whether the frequencies used by your carrier match up with those of the ATT ROM on the phone. And then make sure those frequencies are actually being used...
I often use https://www.frequencycheck.com/ as a first check to see if the phone works on the carrier...

Thanks a lot for your quick reply. I have tried my SIM-Card in another phone and had the same slow data speed so I'm quite sure it's not the phone but my data plan. I am going to see if I can change my data plan to resolve it. It's a bit embarassing for me because I found the problem like 30 minutes after posting the question here. But still a huge thanks to you @schwinn8 for taking your time for my problems!
Thanks

If the other phone was US also, it still could be this issue... but, yes, a plan could restrict it as well, of course.

The other phone was a swiss Iphone

[Q] T-Mobile WiFi Calling and Tethering on HTC One Developer Edition

Hey guys,
If this has been answered previously, then please forgive me, but I wasn't finding anything definitive in the related threads. I've got an unlocked Developer Edition that I plan on using on T-Mobile. I really wanted the extra space and I *believe* San Diego is refarmed and so should work reasonably well (although if I get Edge speeds I'm gonna be bummed).
Anywho, has anyone figured out whether there is:
1) any way to get WiFi calling working? Not positive I'll need but wondering if I need to flash a T-Mobile modem or rom to get that to work on the DE version
2) if tethering will work if my plan supports it (it does - I've done it on my T-Mobile Galaxy Note II)
3) does flashing one's modem cause the phone to show as "tampered" or "modified"? My preference would be NOT to add the bloat unless I'm going to lose out on the aforementioned features OR if the signal ends up being dramatically affected.
Lastly, has anyone else had any experience with the Developer Edition on T-Mobile in San Diego? Wondering what to expect.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
K-
I have the Dev One on T-Mo in Az and it's awesome. I've seen up to 24mbps on LTE and as little as 12mbps on LTE here.
I'll try tethering but I don't see why it would be an issue. My rooted Sensation tethered just fine and with a non-carrier phone we should still be more than able to do so.
Not sure about WiFi calling as I never used it. With unlimited minutes and decent reception at home it never crossed my mind to try it.
WiFi calling does work you just need to flash a ROM that has it. It has been implemented in International ROMs so you don't have to stick to just T-Mobile firmware.
Thanks for the answers, guys. Guess I stupidly figured the Developer Edition WAS the International version rom already - no? Guessing not by your phrasing.
Guess my problem when it arrives on Thursday (fingers crossed) will be that I'm not certain whether I can completely revert back to stock after flashing should I need to return it. Will do a little more research. Have flashed the hell out of my Note II but I thought I'd read that all methods on the One end up with "Tampered" being displayed, which I'm sure would cause HTC to NOT take it back, even within the 30 days.
Then it's just a question of how good or bad the data speeds end up being in San Diego.
Thanks again for the help.

Need advice from NYC area members

Hi guys,
I've been doing research but wanted to pose this question to everyone in this forum as well.
Thinking about making the switch over to T-Mobile to test their network and see how I like it.
Unfortunately I'd have to get an HTC One capable of receiving their LTE signal so I'd have to swap phones (at least that's what I've seen online). Kind of a pain in the ass but whatever.
I just wanted anyone's opinion who has used T-Mobile in NYC/Queens and can tell me about their recent experience. I'm most concerned with building penetration which I've found to be pretty solid with Sprint (granted the data speeds suck).
For anyone who's wondering, yes I will be posting this in the T-Mobile forum as well but I wanted to start here.
Any input would really help. Love this phone but I might have to test a new network.
Thanks

I use to have TMobile and my problem with Tmobile was building penetration. Especially in Manhattan. Whenever I was in a skyscraper, many times my tmobile service would go into Emergency Service only mode. Complained about it many times with them but never got any better, had to eventually change over and I went to sprint and has been with them ever since. And I agree, Sprint's data service really needs to get better. Its just too spotty still

Using a Tab S2 with LTE as a phone

I have a Tab S2 T817W with LTE, unlocked and rooted.
I am leaving for Japan, China and Hong Kong for vacation soon. I was able to use the data SIM cards in those places to connect to Internet last time when I was there.
Is there anyway that I can use it as a regular phone, eg dial and receive phone calls with a local number?
I have hear 2 versions of an answer to this question & hope someone knows for real. Answer #1 is No as the versions of tablets sold in the USA do not have the calling hardware and answer #2 is probably yes with firmware mods as the hardware id the same in all versions. Anyone know the right answer?
I think all US LTE models have the phone removed, and I don't think hacking it in has worked thus far. You can sometimes do regular texting tho, but you may need to pay a little extra. As I just wrote in another thread, my SM-T719 works exactly like a phone tho, it's the international unlocked model, no carrier connection at all. Just pop in your sim and it's basically a huge smartphone I think the key here in the States is the network not recognizing the IMEI, so not knowing that it's a tablet.

Just T719, no letter at all.
Verizon s2 lte can be used as a phone. Messaging+ from Verizon can enable calls and calls can be made and received. Only downside is, it is missing the 3g band. I live in Los Angeles so I always have lte signal.

note 9 verizon vs note 9 tmobile

I have an up to date verizon note 9 although still paying for it I had it on their service for over 6 months so legally allowed to use on another service currently using it on cricket with no issues other than no VOlte which I've never had with cricket no matter what phone because I won't use the phones they have because I don't like them but that's another story....Since I can't get volte on my Verizon model note 9 that's fully updated for US I was wanting to switch to tmobile...I was set up with a sim card on their magenta plus plan worked great till I got to my home which is in a more rural area but did show verified coverage at driveway on their map I had no signal so I went to settings searched for mobile networks found tmobile listed registered and it connected like 2 bars LTE but within min lost service did it again lost service again while I had lte I was able to call and use data...so my question is could this be me using a verizon phone for it not latching on by itself or holding the signal I know note 9 has the 600mhz band but was wandering if I went ahead and got a tmobile phone if it would actually latch on and hold the signal that Verizon's addons and changing is playing well with tmobile...UNLESS someone can tell me how to get VOlte on cricket with this note 9 then I wouldn't need tmobile then 3g calling has went to crap over a year....thankyou for any input

All N960U and N960U1 devices are EXACTLY the same. The only difference between the devices is software.
Flash the software for the carrier your running including the Userdata for you Note 9. It should work for all features especially on T-Mobile. T-Movile fully allows unlocked devices on their network whereas Verizon doesn't. I'm pretty sure at&t is like Verizon through when it comes to unlocked devices, and they own cricket so that rule probably trickles down to them as well.
You can get all carrier version of software for your Note 9 on samfirm or sammobile

But my question would be would my phone latch on to tmobile towers using tmobile firmware better than my current state using verizon firmware I'm excluding wifi calling and volte just trying to determine if I would have a difference in service availability picking up towers and holding them with stronger lte signal or if it's just poor coverage both ways and will be no different than you for your advice as well

You will not have a difference in coverage. T-Mobile did the same thing with where I live and listed it on their map as being fully covered. I barely get LTE at my house or anywhere in my neighborhood.

You will never know until you try it, so why not try it and find out? Make it an SM-N960U1. Debloated and ready to go with any sim you install. Flash the unbranded firmware that can work on any of the US providers. That's what I have, and when I loaded a T-Mobile sim, I got VoLTE and wifi calling. I've run a lot of custom firmwares in the past, but this is the best phone and firmware combo I've ever had. And it's pure stock.
Also, this stock One UI with dark mode is very slick. VERY! No Substratum, no themes, no fuss. Just clean and black.

His goal is better service reception.
Only the carrier can fix that by actually providing the coverage they put on their maps.

Lots of people have reported better or worse quality service, all other things equal except for firmware/software: different radios enabled/disabled; different optimizations. I just read another thread where someone got better tmobile reception at his house after flashing tmobile software over US unlocked software. There are more variables than just the carrier side of things.

Thankyou then that kinda answers my question that although phones are equal between verizon version and unlocked internally and firmware being the difference that using a tmobile phone with their firmware I'd stand the best chance of service and since my area uses extended range area I would probably have a better experience than on my note 9 verizon...thankyou again

Yes. I think it may make no difference at all, or it might (much to gain, but nothing to lose), but most of the evidence in these forums, when it comes to connection quality, is extremely variable and anecdotal. Nobody can know an answer to this kind of question, unless they test it out for themselves. Good luck!

Question Unlimited Native Hotspot (T-Mobile)

Hi,
I just got a OnePlus 10 Pro. I haven't yet activated it and gotten in yet, but I'm also moving to T-mobile from Sprint/T-Mobile.
The plan I'll be on has a 5GB hotspot allowance. I'd like to set my phone up to bypass the hotspot allowance and treat it has normal data use from my phone.
Can anyone help direct me in how to do this? The phone is unlocked, and I'm guessing I'll need to root it first, but any help from anyone on how to get this going would be great.
Thanks.
Sounds like another t mobile limitation..
Send it back when you get it and grab a pixel 7 pro... Read through some of the threads about t mobile, they really do sound like an awful company, I wouldn't line their pockets, just like I wouldn't line OnePlus anymore.
There used to be a limitation on three devices here in the UK, their sales slumped and they stopped doing it, now their phones are unlocked and open..
I'll be honest, from what I've read it seems t mobile locks their phones up pretty good, you could maybe look into changing region but that's a whole other can of worms and in all fairness not something you should be doing with a brand new phone..
Have a look about through the 10 pro threads and you'll see what I mean...
There may be a magisk module that allows you to use your data, but have never needed it myself

Eh, clearly you are not from the US
T-Mobile is by far the best carrier for devs if you buy a carrier locked device. VZW and ATT are by far worse, and Dish is still a joke of a network. Check out VZW and you'll see that even if you buy a Verizon carrier Pixel, you will NEVER be able to unlock it (without an exploit, see Pixel 3). This is unfortunately the Android situation in the US. The NE2217 actually allows you to oem unlock and get the unlock code from oneplus prior to getting the SIM unlocked, which was unheard of in the past. Too bad oneplus decided to **** that up by not having a MSM.
Regarding the OP's question: He's on an unlimited plan called Magenta, which has unlimited data but limited tethering of 5GB. No device sets limit on this, because T-Mobile measures hotspot usage with TTL value on the TCP packet. Technically, you can set the TTL to 65 on devices 1 hop from the phone and the network will never know it's tethered, but obviously you'll need to be using a device where you can modify the TTL. Some people use a 2nd router to achieve it, you'll find a lot of resources about this online.

Yeah that doesn't answer the OP's question at all. You can buy a NE2215, or a U1 Samsung, or unlocked Pixel, or an iPhone. Doesn't help that the network will measure hotspot usage the same way, with the TCP packet's TTL value.
And also to resolve your confusion. In the US, carriers do not sell SIM free devices ever. You need to buy from the manufacturer directly.
OP wants to know how to defeat network hotspot measurement. Ranting about how the carrier locks down the phone or even the manufacturer is not helpful. g96818's solution might work, but it's not guaranteed.

You need to chill lad...
T-Mobile seems to be the only network selling a device that's a massive ballache to do anything with.
Also you're suggesting you can't buy a device SIM free??
Just checked with Verizon. They offer the device SIM free so your chatting bubbles pal
My point is don't buy from T-Mobile, ever... Why would you if this is what they do to you? They do not offer a SIM free device, here in the UK we used to have EE do the same thing with mobile hotspot when it was called T-mobile then they need with orange.
People just stopped using them for that reason, it promoted the other networks like Three and even Vodafone. Soon as the then merged companies realised this they stopped doing it, as well as locking down bootloaders.. So the answer to the question is to swerve them believe it or not.
@Strawboy good luck with your phone buddy, my stance is rigidly within sending it back, T-Mobile sound awful mate..
There may be a magisk module or otherwise that may help but you shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to use your phone. That's nuts.

the tether limit isn't based on the device they sell, it's across all devices regardless if it's sim unlocked or not. In the past, you would edit the build prop and add one line to the global tables to bypass the tether check, but google changed that several android generations ago so now only pdanet+ was working for me.
It all depends on the plan your carrier offered. No carrier in the US offers unlimited tethering anymore and those lucky few who have it are all grandfathered plans that the carrier cannot change.
as far as i know, t-mobile has a bunch of restrictions, but it's also the cheapest, offers free 5G (vice an upgrade by other carriers), and offers unlimited data plans.

I'm aware that they capture data to identify hotspot usage.
Seems that Verizon offer unlimited, after an allotted amount of data they reduce the speed but it's still unlimited..
If you're still getting 50-100Mb then that's perfectly fine...
As does t mobile.
3G max speed is 42Mb down... That's perfectly fine for most people tbh.
Seeing as it's 3G in 2022 it should max out.

I will test that 40 gb hot spot limit and see if the speed drops afterwards. didn't realize they changed that. was only 5 gb tether when i signed up for the plan. it'll probably drop to 4G
btw, the unlimited i was talking about is without speed reduction.

Holy spirit man, not only do you not know the answer to the OP's question other than aimlessly suggesting "magisk module", you decide to go to arms about market environments that you know nothing about. I don't tell you what's what in the UK, and you don't get to spread misguided misinformation for the US market.
"T-Mobile seems to be the only network selling a device that's a massive ballache to do anything with."
No, I've already stated this. Both ATT and VZW in the US lock their swans down more than TMO. TMO is by far the most dev friendly carrier if you wanted to get a carrier device. Buy manufacturer unlocked if you must, but if you want carrier deals, you are going to have the best option with TMO.
"My point is don't buy from T-Mobile, ever... Why would you if this is what they do to you?"
The phone is free or nearly free, that's why people put up with carrier phones, because of carrier deals. IDK about you, but I'm willing to go through the trouble of hacking up my devices than to pay an additional $800-$1000.
"Just checked with Verizon. They offer the device SIM free so your chatting bubbles pal"
Clueless reps at all 3 carriers will promise the flowering world, esp overseas chat reps. VERIZON DOES NOT EVER SELL SIM FREE, All VZW devices (even fully paid) will be SIM locked for 60 days as an "anti-fraud" measure. This even includes Verizon MVNOs. https://www.verizon.com/support/device-unlocking-policy/
Oh, and good luck ever accessing the bootloader of a VZW device.
"3G max speed is 42Mb down... That's perfectly fine for most people tbh."
"If you're still getting 50-100Mb then that's perfectly fine..."
Both offer unlimited at throttled speeds. Don't assume speed based on the technology. 50-100mbps isn't even normal on a good day for VZW LTE or DSS 5G
Verizon: After exceeding 50 GB/mo of 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G Nationwide, or 4G LTE data, you can still use hotspot at lower speeds of 3 Mbps when on 5G Ultra Wideband and 600 Kbps when on 5G Nationwide / 4G LTE for the rest of the month.
T-Mobile: "3G", but it is 600 Kbps on Magenta / Magenta Max

Anyways, the OP's question's been answered, so I'm out. There are plenty of wireless hacking forums out there that can teach you to bypass restrictions that are against XDA rules and generally don't work on phones but other LTE/NR devices, Google it and you'll find it.
[kind reminder] People can get so passionate about their view on things, it's both amazing and frightening sometimes. Don't forget the person behind the username. [/kind reminder]
Thanks for the replies thus far.
I am currently using easytether and Netshare, and both work pretty well for me. I would just love to be able to use the native option without third party apps.
I had read about editing the build prop in the past but never had the chance to try it out.
I'll look into the TTL/TCP comment that was made as well.
Thanks!
