Is there a viable method to remap the functionality of a long press on the home button to perform a different action? The settings menu does not appear to offer such an option. Currently, when a long press is performed, a window emerges presenting choices like "Turn off," "Emergency call," and "Touch sensitivity."

There should be an option, I set mine to launch Google Assistant.

I believe this has something to do with new Android system.
I have some older apps like nbpro or simple task switcher that don't have three dots. Is there any way on tab s2 to remap an existing key to menu key? For example, long press switching or long press home will activate menu?
I found that I can have more settings key by activating assistant menu under accessibility. Assistant menu is a cyan circle, once tapped, it explodes to show further onscreen keys. To able to assign more settings to a key off the screen or to a gesture would be nice. I am not ready to root my tab s2 yet. Or else using xposed would be handy.
Long press the back button. It brings up settings/menu
Long press back key does work sometimes.
In some app like nbpro, the menu, more options appear when I hold back key after lo press. When I release after the long press the more options disappear. It sometimes does not register very well. I don't know if it is something to do with the app or something to do with the system.
"Recent" button not working with apps on my new Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 Tablet
Hey guys,
My first post here.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7" Tablet. The problem I'm having has to do with the "recent" button. (That's the button to the left of the Home button). When I launch apps, such as Wolfram Alpha, and press the Recent button, the tablet goes into double window mode. It's supposed to bring up a sub menu in the app. It does this with all other apps as well. I've contacted Samsung tech support and all of the agents told me that I had to reset the tablet to factory default settings. I'm reluctant to do that...
Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, please tell me how you resolved it.
Cheers,
grecinos
Maybe you should do a shorter push? Long press should do this double window thing.

The button is not designed to give menu items, as with some versions of android previously. This button only controls multi window with a long press, or quick press gives running apps to select from the carousel. Any menu buttons in lollipop will be via on screen menu icons such as material design horizontal lines.
My Note 5 gives recent on short push and "double window" on long press.
Android 5.1.1
Or am I wrong? I thought he needed recents.
"or quick press gives running apps to select from the carousel"
Is dat not equal to recent?

Try long-press BACK button (right from the home button) - the long press of the back button should open the menu, just like tapping on the 3 dots.
I think long press function is there for older apps without the 3-dots in the UI - on other devices long press of recent (left) button does this, Sammy may changed the assignment...
Title says it all, i'm on stock. In the Buttons screen there are options to change long and double press of each hardware button, but not single press. I can change single press action of the home button with nova launcher, i'd like to change single press action of the left capacitive button so it acts as a regular menu button.
Try flar2's Button Mapper app.
All I want is long press on back-hardware key to kill the current app which we can usually find in developer settings. Is it a Nugent thing or stock OOS disable this feature?
I'm coming from a galaxy s3 running CM from about 4 years ago and even then it had simple things like this, i could hold back to kill and also use volume controls to skip track when screen is off, etc. Can't do any of that on this new phone, really frustrating. To remap back and recent apps button using that app you need to upgrade to the pro version
I am trying to get my phone to launch a custom menu when on the home page, and the home button is pressed. I have tried using both TouchTask and AutoInput to listen for a home button press, but without luck.
I have an unrooted Huawei Mate 9 Pro. The phone has a fingerprint reader as a home button, which may have an influence on the issue.
Any ideas as to how to do this?
That's because AutoInput has a global action for pressing home/back/etc. buttons.
Add task - Plugin - AutoInput - Global action (instead of action) - Configuration (press the pencil) - Action - Tadaaa
I think @wobster misunderstood the question.
Its Not about the action, Its about the home Button as a trigger.
Nevertheless have you solved this with autoinput? On my honor 9 the home Button (capacitive) is also not recognized by autoinput. Neither with it in the Profile detection nor in the logs within the App.
Personally, I think the easiest way to solve this problem is with nova launcher which allows you to set the action on home button presses including a taker task.
I haven't played with it, but it might be doable with auto input by changing the assistant used on a long press.

Hey guys,
I'm looking to get rid of the google assistant on my Exynos Note 8 and replace it with the good old google voice search whenever I long press the home button, similar to what I had on my OnePlus One. Reason for this is that the scroogle assistant is demanding way too much privacy-invasive permissions to simply function, including requiring me to log-in and give access to all my personal data, just to do what I was already doing with the old google voice search on my OnePlus One without any nonsense privacy-invasion. Interestingly, the OnePlus 5 I bought for my mum still has this handy feature in its settings by long pressing the hardware home button, but long pressing the software button still brings up the scroogle assistant.
Anyone know of a way I can assign long press of the Note 8's virtual home button to launch the good old google voice search instead of the stupidly privacy invasive scroogle assistant?
Ok, after several google/bing searches, finally found a perfect and extremely easy solution to my problem, doesn't even require root:
1.) Download and install Home Button Launcher app from the Play Store
2.) Open and navigate to Settings > Apps > Select "Default Apps" from overflow menu > Device assistance app > Select "Home Launcher"
3.) Press and hold the virtual home button to launch Home Launcher
4.) Via its menu, add the "Voice Search" app, remove the "Google" app, and in its settings, check the "<<Auto start mode>> if single app selected" checkbox
5.) Vuala, welcome back google voice search without the stupid privacy invasion ?
