Hi all,
I have an issue with phone payments since ca. 10th of April. Before that date everything worked properly, then something made payments impossible. Phone suddenly stopped communicating with pay terminals in stores, no reaction between the devices at all (terminals don't see the card). NFC is on and ceecked via other app, credit card is correctly configured and activated in both bank app and Google Pay app. I'm on 9.0.0.197 since around 2 months, so upgrade to EMUI 9 did not cause the problem.
I'm in contact with Google support who seem to flip the problem on user side, HiCare support also does not see the issue on their side, they ask me to perform full wipe and ask questions about HCE activation, which I cannot answer. And, as you go through opinions on Play Store, it looks problem is not only mine, but plenty other M10 Pro, M20 and Honor Play users.
Any thoughts or ideas from you?
Thx,
Chaffinch

Problem solved.
What helped? I was in the beta testers group of Google Play Services. Cancellation of approval for beta testing and getting back of the Google Play Services app to version 13.2.92 (official, non-beta) unlocked payments by phone.
I post it if someone had a similar situation.
Best,
C.
I've purchased the new Galaxy Tab A 8.4 2020 directly from Samsung. There are only carrier-locked versions, but as Google Fi user, I picked the T-Mobile version as likely the 'most compatible' with Fi, which uses T-Mobile/Sprint for most of its connectivity.
As I don't want to pay for another Fi account, I ordered (for free) a data-only SIM from Google - it works perfectly. Normally, I run off of wifi only, turning Airplane Mode on first, then turning on wifi. I've traveled with it outside the house once, and used the data SIM very nicely. As a Fi user, I can also make calls from it, over data, wifi or LTE.
Some notes on the tablet:
Good:
1. It is fast enough for all my needs, and with a micro SD in addition to the SIM, set as additional storage, I have plenty of room for my needs. NOTE: I don't play games, so I can't comment on game performance.
2. Face recognition works well as long as there is enough light - in dim light, you will have to use PIN/Password, as there is no fingerprint reader.
3. I was able to source a case via Amazon, there are a number of choices.
4. USB C
Not So Good:
1. No fingerprint reader.
2. No ambient light sensor, so you will be adjusting lighting manually. There are apps which use the camera for this, but then you will lose face recognition unlocking.
3. Samsung's Usual Bloatware: I use virtually none of it, not even Touchwiz, as I prefer Nova.
4. Although the case has magnets, they won't turn off the screen when the cover is closed, you will have to turn it off manually or wait for it to timeout.
5. Running Android 9, and nothing available as to when, if ever, it will get an upgrade.
6. Security patch is Feb 1, 2020 and no idea if/when it will get another.
Using the XDA app.. it identifies as an AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 3 !
All in all, I judge this to be an 'OK' but not great effort from Samsung for $264. For a few more bucks, it could have been a lot better. If the Lenovo new M8 had not been out of stock, I might have bought it instead and saved $130.
You can find the T-Mobile version at: https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/t...-8-4-2020-32gb-mocha-t-mobile-sm-t307uznatmb/

Did some Geekbench 5 testing, comparing it against my Huawei Mediapad M3 running an in-process version of Lineage 15.
The M3 runs Kirin 950, 4 cores @ 1.8 and 4 cores @ 2.3 The Tab A runs an ARMv8, 6 cores @ 1.59 and 2 cores @ 1.77
The M3 won the CPU test, single core 351 multi core 1267, with the Tab A at single core 271 and multi core 965
The M3 has a Mali T880, and the Tab A has a newer Mali G71 graphics engine.
Trying to run the Compute test (Vucan), the M3 failed to run a number of tests, giving it a very low 105, while the Tab A got a 774
However, until the M3 started failing to run tests, and having started both at the same time, they were literally neck-in-neck for speed. The supposed advantage of the G71 is 20% reduction in power use.
I will run the Huawei numbers again after the Lineage ROM is more stable.
Update Received! 6/15/2020
Received update this morning - I was hoping for update to Android 10, but this one was to May Security update, May kernel update. New build number is PPR1.180610.011.T307USQS2ATE3
I am happy to see an indication that this tablet is going to get updates!
I'm not yet noting any differences from before the update.
At&T Samsung Tab A 8.4 SM-T307U
I wanted to buy unlock version of this tablet from samsung but unfortunately they only sell carrier version.
I have a T-Mobile free line that wasn't in use so thought i should buy this tablet use it in my car for music, GPS, OBDII etc. I didn't buy the T-mobile version because the free line that i have is for cellphone and If i would buy T-mobile version of this tablet, they would ask me to change the line to data only and wouldn't be unlimited anymore. So i went with AT&T version and was cheaper also, AT&T unlocked it for me in about 48hrs after request.
It works fine with T-mobile and was hoping it would switch the firmware to T-mobile once i put the sim like it does with Samsung phone that it initializes the sim and reboots with that carrier software but the Tablet doesn't do that. I even flash T-Mobile Firmware, it flashes successfully but still AT&T stuff is on the tablet. I was able to uninstall/disable most of the At&t bloat but not all. So came to XDA to find root or custom firmware but unfortunately nothing yet.
Update - Occasional Freezing
I use the Brave browser, and on this Tab A, I occasionally run into the screen freezing for no apparent reason. It eventually unfreeze, but is disconcerting.
OP, how did you manage to get the SIM card to authenticate on your Google Fi account? I purchased this tablet to use for work as I am an Uber driver and tried to authenticate the device with a data-only SIM card. The device manages to use 3g and technically works without authentication through the Fi app but is worthlessly slow this way. I can't rely on a 3g connection for the Uber driver application. When I try to authenticate the device using the Fi app, it takes awhile before stating the device isn't compatible with Fi.
Did you authenticate the app with a different device and then insert it into the tab A 8.4 2020? Just to confirm ahead of time, I too have the T-Mobile version of the tablet.
Thank you if you get this and have the time to explain how you managed to make the device work!

I actually use it for news, reading etc. I have not tried to make Fi calls over 3g/LTE - just tried to do so, did not work, but I will try it again. It has worked fine for data over LTE. You can now have both Fi and Google Voice numbers, maybe get a Google Voice number and try calling over 3G with that?

I'm not too worried about the ability to make/receive calls and my tablet states that my device is on LTE but I can be sure by the incredibly slow speeds I'm getting that it is locked to 3g. It takes minutes to load simple web pages. When you go to the Fi app does it state that your device is authenticated with the SIM associated to a tab A 8.4?
I just want LTE to use for Uber so I don't have my main phone pinned at maximum brightness all the time as this can cause burn in issues with the OLED display.
Edit: I was able to solve the issue with the help of tech support. The solution is to activate the SIM manually through the Fi website (fi.google.com/data) and restart the device with the SIM inserted (also the support rep had me delete the Fi app before restarting). Hope this helps anyone who finds this thread in the same way I did!

Updated today, 108MB download, security patch level 1 July 2020. Kernel 4.4.177-18047720 Jul 8. Seems like a large patch for just security, but no other major changes observable. Still Android 9. Unable to find any public information on if/when upgrade to Android 10 will occur.
I'm surprised that a 2020 device doesn't even have any public info when it's going to catch up with present time's Android 10 (while there are already plans in the industry for Android 11). Very disappointing...
Update to Android 10 has been published by Samsung, and apparently is being sent out by Verizon. Nothing from T-Mobile yet... https://doc.samsungmobile.com/sm-t307u/glw/doc.html
T-Mobile Upgrading to 10 Today
Updated to Android 10, so far without issue. Security patch level Sept 1, 2020
I have sadly figured out that my old Huewei Mediapad 3 running a custom ROM https://forum.xda-developers.com/mediapad-m3/development/rom-t4085115/page58 has much better wifi reception that my new Galaxy Tab 8.4 2020
Unexpected update received today; still on Android 10, One UI 2.1, kernel 4.4.177-19484886, Build QP1A.190711.020.T307USQS3BTJ1
Security patch level Oct-2020 Release 1
This is the first time I've seen security patch levels updated two months in a row. The lack of an update to Android 11 is still very disappointing.
I have one too. How did you remove all the bloatware? Is possible to root it?

I have not removed bloatware, and it is not rooted. Mine is still not even unlocked, as I refuse to pay T-Mobile for 6 months of service I don't need.
I have Google Fi data chip in it, which works fine, and I use Nova launcher on all my phones and tablets so as to have a consistent interface.
As far as I know, no developer is working on unlocking/rooting or custom ROM.

I flashed Canadian Samsung tab A 8.4 Firmware (XAC)which is unlocked LTE version of this tablet. Not a single bloat and is faster than At&t firmware. I'm able to send/receive sms and mms, Hotspot but no call. So my t-mobile phone sim works in this unlocked At&t tablet with unlimited data.
XAA USA unlocked
XAC CANADA Unlocked.

My problem is, I don't believe I can flash any firmware until I can unlock the tablet - which I can't do without T-Mobile. Or am I missing something?
Updated today to Android 10, One UI 2.1, Jan 1 Security patch. I thought that the One UI 3.0 came with Android 10, but that's not what sys info says. I use Nova so I don't much care.
Running Geekbench 5, results are Single Core, 271 and multi-core, 998 virtually the same as day 1.
I have the factory unlocked model and I noticed I can't do video calls or enable RCS. Turns out those are only available on the carrier model (my carrier is verizon). I also don't have voicemail built into the phone app like with pixels or iphones—another feature that's only available in the carrier model.
Are there other significant features (and drawbacks) of the carrier version?
Because I'm considering flashing the verizon firmware to get the proper experience with my carrier.
I have the unlocked model as well and use RCS with Google Messages app, as for video calls. Google Duo is enabled by default and shows up in the phone dialer. I have the Voicemail app installed as a system app as well. Weird it's not on your device
Vid call is a feature that looks cooler than it is in practice. It's unnecessarily intrusive.
-Control the flow of information-
It was one of the first things I package blocked.
I had to call my voicemail once for visual voicemail to show up as an app. I'm on ATT, but that's what got mine working on my unlocked S21U
No RCS is huge for 2021. If I have to do it all over again I wouldn't get the unlocked phone. Now i'm stuck with unlocked S21 Ultra (no rcs).

My hatred of Google is boundless at this point and not sure what all the tradeoffs would be.
One sure one is that using any Google app is feeding the beast... the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
I am on Verizon and still went with the unlocked version. I really don't see the big deal of RCS. If they respond great, if not that's fine too. I have no regrets going with the unlocked version and I don't need more bloat from Verizon.
I had the T-Mobile version and exchanged it for the Unlocked version with more storage. I still have RCS, video calling, and I have the default, non-Pixel Android voicemail setup. The only other thing is that my unlocked phone didn't come with all of the carrier bloat (it had around 10 missing and useless carrier apps). So for me, getting the Unlocked version was the best idea.
Basically, grab the unlocked version if you've got modern-tech intelligence (idk what else to call that other than being a nerd lol). The carrier version might be better for it's simplicity (but will be mostly hated by the really techy people out there).
I have the Verizon version, but before I ever fired it up, I flashed the U1 (unlocked) firmware onto this phone. I love the lack of bloat and I am able to utilize RCS with Google Messages. RCS is Samsung Messages is not available on the S21 Ultra in the US as of this time, so Google Messages is the route I went. I don't do video calling much anyway, but Goggle Duo is more than sufficient to me. And I have the voicemail app installed and it works perfectly without having to dial in to access it. No, it's not within my dialer app, but it works for me.
i have verizon but neither google nor samsung's native messenger works for RCS??? can folks on VZ confirm that the s21 ultra RCS option works??

I can confirm that I am on Verizon and RCS works in Google Messages. One thing I've seen in other posts/threads is you need to make sure Carrier Services is installed. I can say that I had RCS without installing this, but I've seen others say it was necessary. As I said in the earlier post, I did flash the U1 unlocked firmware, but I've never had an issue with RCS not working in Google Messages since they circumvented the need for carrier support.

Keep in mind, the people you're texting need to have RCS enabled as well - otherwise is reverts to a traditional SMS. It's very similar to when people on Android text someone using an iPhone. The Android user gets no RCS and the iPhone user gets no iMessage. The good thing is that Google had initially offered Apple a direct implementation of RCS, however, they immediately turned it down and told Google to stay away... Quite a let down at how greedy and manipulative that company is...
Oh, and you probably need to be using Google Messages for the features that you mentioned to work anyway, as those features are implemented into Google Messages but not into Samsung's Messenger app.

This upset me too. I had it with my S20+ Verizon variant and I thought the unlocked version would be superior, but now I'm second guessing that notion.
I'm rocking the Verizon version of the S21 Ultra and I can say I have RCS support via Google Messages. Got my phone at launch, however RSC didn't start working until mid February via an update to the Google Messages app.
So I have a few questions that searching for answers has either been vague or given me old, outdated articles and answers if any at all. Coming here to see if maybe you guys can help bring some clarity.
I still have not received the November security patch. I'm using an Unlocked Pixel 5 with an AT&T sim. This is the first time I have not been able to get an OTA update on my phone when I saw it was released. I was using the 12 beta on my device but my wife hasn't gotten one either.
Pixel tips mentions the enhanced voice typing on my phone but I do not have it available to me. I am on the Gboard beta program and I briefly got it when it was in it's trial rounds and it works great but is no longer available. Is this a 6/6P exclusive?
personally. i would backup everything on the phone(s) you want to save. then do a fully factory wipe and fresh install on the latest image from here https://developers.google.com/android/images#barbet make sure you select the correct model when flashing. the web flashing is extremely easy to use. just make sure you use chrome to do this all in. also make sure you install the usb drivers first before attempting to flash the phone. otherwise it will never see the phone connected to the computer.
one thing i have learned over the years of messing with computers and phones. it sometimes best to start off with a fresh copy of your OS than spending days or weeks trying to troubleshoot the problem only to have it show back up next update.
AT&T maybe controlling the OTA update for security patches. Google has sent out the updates to US vendors. Double check that you have OTA enabled. It maybe found in setting app - System - System update. Unless AT&T moved it somewhere else.
Check in the Settings app: System - Languages & input - On-screen keyboard. Verify that Gboard is listed as the option for Multilingual typing and that Google Voice Typing is set to Automatic. There may also by an item which has Google Voice Type [Legacy] = Automatic. I would not be concerned if does not exist. However if it is there and no equal to Automatic, then investigate further. Finally Voice typing is enable in Gboard by opening Gmail or Messages and select the "..." icon above the keyboard, then Settings - Voice typing - Use voice typing
Your thread subject says you have a Pixel 5 but you are posting in the Pixel 5a forum. Please either confirm that you have a 5a or move the thread to the 5 forums. It's hard to help you if we don't know which you have.
Since it is an Unlocked phone it is getting its OS updates directly from Google, not from AT&T. If you had a locked phone from AT&T you might well not be receiving timely OS updates. That is why one should never buy a phone from a network operator. Can you confirm that you did not buy this phone from AT&T? In this context "Unlocked" means the bootloader is unlocked or at least unlockable, not that the SIM card is unlocked to be able to work on another network.
If you do have an unlockable phone then the best thing to do right now is to backup your data and programs, then download and install the latest factory image. That will get you to a solid foundation for future OTAs. I would stay off the beta track from here forward.
Can anyone tell me if they're able to use Hey Google / Google Assistant voice commands on a Galaxy S10 that's been updated to Android 12?
I've been about 2 weeks now, and have failed to get dozen of more suggested fixes to solve the problem of voice commands not working on a renewed S10 I bought on Amazon. It was working out-of-the-box, but after activating the phone and installing a few apps, it hasn't worked since. I was on the phone with Samsung support for an hour or more, and even they weren't able to get it working.
If someone can confirm they have it working on a S10 with the Android 12 update, I'll go ahead and return this one for another. I do like the particularly bright 820 nits screen.
Fervently hoping to get one or more response(s) here on this S10 thread as I've not had luck elsewhere.
Hello TakuSkan, yes the google assistant still works just no more need to say "OK google" you just have to activate it in the parameter so you can choose your assistant between the 3 known bixby or google for alexia pariel you have to install the alexia application Amazon.
Please say hello when you post would be welcome thank you

Hello meric57!
Thanks ever so much for your feedback, That's encouraging to hear. Assistant was set and working when I 1st got the phone. But it seems I've exhausted every approach to get it back. I'm looking to use it for voice commands and hands free navigating Google Maps on my motorcycle via a Sena comms system..
The S10 originally came with Android 9 Pie, but all the renewed ones being sold now have been upgraded to 12 like mine. So you say you have or have seen Android 12 S10s where Assistant and voice commands do operate phone and navigating functions properly? Is that right?
For a while it all seemed to be coming down to wondering if 12 might have been at the root of my problem. But I'll stick with having Amazon swap this 12 S10 with another if folks with the same model & OS version have voice commands working properly.
Thanks again for your input meric57. Much appreciated!
hello,
Yes google assistant works just who no longer needs to say "ok google" just activate in the search parameter "google assistant" then once activate ask directly what you want
Hey...
Yeah, I'm able to ask Assistant whatever I want on my older phone since they dropped OK Google. I'm still wondering if your S10 has been updated to Android 12. Or if anyone else with a S10 with Android 12 can confirm voice commands work for them. I'm a little wary of the v12 upgrade.
Edit: OH! I just spotted "Galaxy S 10 SM-G973F UI Version 4.1 Android 12 XEF" in your signature. Great! Anyone else second this?
erase thank you
Hello TakuSkane, I just saw that you have S10 SM-G973U1 so I think it comes from your problem. Look here to read the first message https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/g973u-and-g973u1 -firmware-links-here.3905852/ you have the link for the firmware or ask here for your concern.
At worst, return your S10 to Amazon and take an S10 from an official operator.
Thanks for the info meric57. I'm not all that tech savvy when it comes to mobile devices. I don't see anything in the 1st post in that thread related to my issue. And it says the G973U1 is for the same phone but without all the carrier bloatware. Which sounds like it would be preferable. Are you suggesting that flashing to G973U might solve my problem?
Hello takuskan, the concern that you have these the S10 the motherboard install SM-G973U1. I do not know if your network and your operator works in your region or not read well all that is marked on the link that I put see more see the posts in the discussion thread.
Me, bixby-alexia-google assistant works on my S10 SM-G973F exynos 4 G.
Hey meric57. Since I can return the phone, that's the "easiest" way forward after chasing fixes for weeks now. I'll look for the G973U, G973U1, G973F models when I choose another. If all I can get that's affordable (cheap) is another G973U1, and if that one still has the problem, I'll follow up here and read through that thread you linked to. But as I've written, Assistant DID work when I 1st got the S10. Sooooo... we'll see. Thanks for being the only soul on these forums to give me a little feedback. In fact I've not gotten any other feedback on other support sites either.
Hello TakuSkan, I don't look at the price, I prefer to buy from an official SFR-orange operator... I'm sure I have a smartphone that works and hassle-free, take a phone from a market or sales site like amazon or others I don't buy I don't trust it tells you unlocked all operators ok my there is a network chip either US or Asia.
It is EU certified for the network
Sadly some folks have no choice but to cut corners as they navigate today's financial super highways.
