Safe to remove apps ? - Droid X Android Development

Has anyone compiled a list of apps that are safe to remove ?

Do not remove backupassistantclient
mrweeeedbirdman via tweet
DO NOT REMOVE BACKUPASSISTANTCLIENT if you do, get it back on there NOW! a factory reset will result in a near brick.

I have removed:
3G hotspot
Kindle
Amazon MP3
Blockbuster
Skype
And did a factory reset.

I can add CityID to that list.

Stupid Noob question, (have root) how? where do I find them?

I don't have the phone in my hands YET, but System apps should be in /system/app
Just use adb shell or the terminal app from the market, commands as follows:
-'su' (get SuperUser permissions)
-'cd system'
-'cd app'
now you can use 'ls' to list the contents of the directory, and when you find the APK you want to remove just type
'rm {name_of_apk}.apk'
note that everything is case sensitive... It probably the easiest to use adb, because its easy to mistype of the soft keyboard. But you need to have the Android SDK installed for that.
I hope that makes sense, obviously don't type the single quotes in the shell...

I tried it and it says the file is read only any ideas

Negative, this factory reset doesn't seem to touch the system folder. In theory you could copy some apps to the system/app folder and they would still be there afterwards.

Oh and moral of the story, don't delete anything you might want later. Always a safer bet to rename the .apk to .bak

This is what I have been doing with root explorer. Got rid of a bunch of crap. Hopefully I don't run into any issues.

If you are su then try to chmod (might need busybox).. something like 'chmod 777 {file}' or 'busybox chmod 777 {file}' then delete.. if that does not work try to chown it.

I'm confused, when i try and delete something, say Blockbuster.apk, I get "Read-only file system"
It wont let me chmod and I do have root (evidenced by the #) so what is going on. This is obv my first time rooting an android phone and I only have light experience with linux.

I have removed:

haha, you'd be surprised! i'm back down to just what android should be, really i use k9 for mail and google voice for text, so i do tend to get rid of some of the normally necessary things
btw: here is my updated list. this includes apps you can remove and 'still' perform a successful factory reset:

To make sure that those of you who later need to do a factory reset (if the phone has a problem of some sort) can do so safely, without having to worry about a partially-bricked phone. Factory resets don't restore all the files, so a necessary file to provision the phone, etc (if deleted) would not be restored and you'd have no easy way to get past activation Trust me... been there with this phone!

HTC_IME Keyboard

Is it possible to use this mod on the Eris? There is a low res version, which I assume is compatible with our screens; however, I'm terrified of bricking the phone, and I'm not sure if flashing something like this would do so.
Also, to install I would restart in recovery and flash the zip, correct? I encourage everyone to check it out. Even if the current version won't work on the Eris, it would be worth it to port over. The stock keyboard is severely lacking.
showthread.php?t=624416 (no links, sorry)
edit: to perhaps get more people interested, here is the feature list:
* Customizable language settings
* Smileys hacked into the hide key (see screen shots)
* Custom smileys
* Installs also on Android < 2.1
* Custom word candidate bar that raises the keyboards so dictionary won't cover the app you type in
* Prediction in fields with own suggestions (search bar etc.)
* Prediction in fields that sets the filter flag
* Prediction in URL fields
* Disable automatic capitalization
* Play sounds in silent mode
* Set sound level
* Automatic space insertion
* Enable prediction with cursor in or adjacent to existing words (QWERTY only)
* Enable a space bar key in URL keyboard (experimental)
* Prediction for physical keyboard (reported working, not tested by me)
* Support for German QWERTZ hard KB layout
* Show voice input button for all keyboards with a settings button
* Swipe right for voice input on any keyboard
* Swipe left to delete word
* Swipe down to hide keyboard
* Disable key preview popup
* Use Google development server for voice (supports German but isn't online 24/7)
* Position of word candidate list is saved if you long press and move it
* Left align word candidate list
* MANY HTC bugs fixed, the changelog for a few of them
* Droid landscape support with resolution related glitches
* User dictionary import/export (for backup or building your dictionary on your computer)
* User dictionary accepts any character, not just HTC approved ones
* Custom vibration length
* Character replacement (can remove diacritic chars)
* Pipe key in qwerty mode
* My source code is now available for your own modding pleasure

I'm curious about this too. I tried to install and it just said, "Not installed"? Can we get this working on the Eris?
well it works
**EDIT**
This keyboard will only work on deodexed roms, consult your devs initial post to see if deodexing was part of their build.
i downloaded and followed the directions per this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655383&page=3
really sweet keyboard tons of features, they said they were having issues with the voice search ect but it works on eris...
just a quick run down...
go to the above post...
1. download the LOW RES in the first post...
2. extract zip to your sdk tools folder
3. open your command window get to your tools directory and apply the following commands...
adb remount
adb push Clicker.apk /system/app/
adb push HTC_IME.apk /system/app/
then reboot
**edit**
i could not push the .htcime but be sure to include in the root of your sd card...i just used astro...enjoy.
then reboot
note I take no responsibility if your nuke your phone, this keyboard will replace your oem one...
I keep trying to install the files, and it keeps giving me a not installed error. Not sure what i'm doing wrong, but either installing the files right to my SD card, or trying to load these files using adb isn't working.
how?
I copied the clicker.apk and the HTC_IME.API to system\app using root explorer and have the other file on root of SD card and it erased my keyboard all together. I'm using the sense able. 7 Rom
try...
did u open a msg app, long press a txt box and see a box called input method? if not do so and select touch input. it should load it right up if it was properly installed, im running ivans .7....so idk if that makes a difference...

Yeah. There is no keyboard installed to select. Long press does nothing in a text field, and in the settings menu, there is no keyboard to select

Check the system\app folder to see if it were present? i would suggest doing it via adb via the instructions above as it worked perfectly for me try giving that a go...oh did you reboot after you moved the files with your file explorer?

How would an non-root go about doing this??
got it sorted...
ok here's why its not working for you... ivans .7 is deodexed, the keyboard didnt include an odex so it works only for deodexed roms, where as the rom u are using isnt.
i flashed it to test and confirm it myself would not load on an odexed rom. we could probably get ahold of the dev or the odex and get it sorted...neway that i believe is the why of it.

does this have to be ran through adb? would it be possible to just run everything manually using astro? im very interested in using this keyboard
Im sure you can...
I'm sure you can use a file explorer or something. I just prefer adb as it seems quicker and more "complete" to me give it a try...just make sure ur using a deodexed rom like ivans .7 as the odexed roms will not recognize it.

Does anybody know how to get this to work on odexed roms? I am using the Sense Able ROM and it won't work.

i pm'd the dev and requested the original file including the odex, hopefully one of ours can work their magic and port it to the odexed roms...for those running the deodexed rom I think ivans .7 it works well...any of the deodexed eris builds actually should work.
I take it that this keyboard would not be functional with Swype?

Swype v1.56.30.7625 HVGA
Swype v1.60.36.8214 HVGA - link posted by xda member
1. Your phone have to be rooted.(look at forum post for tutorial)
2. Your phone need to be able to side load apps.(look at forum post for tutorial)
2. Install Astro File Manager from Android Market.
3. Download the apk file into your microSD card.
4. use Astro File Manager to install the apk, remember to choose "Open App Manager" when you touch/click on the apk file.
5. follow instruction
6. go to any text area like mail/message/notepad. HOLD down on the text cursor. It look like this "I" blinking. Hold it down until Edit test dialog box pop up. Hit input method and choose Swype !
MOD EDIT: Warez Removed
I installed it and set it as default input but when I go to send a txt it still used the original typing screen.
Tap-Long hold on any text input field and select "Input Method" and change it to Swype.
Thanks! I've been looking for this forever!
Nicely done. I love Swype.
Nice.. I am liking this app.
I am kinda new to this I did have rooted G1 but it had the allow apps from unknown source button. I loaded swype on my phone and when it tries to install I still get the message that my phone does not allow apps from unknown sources. I am rooted with custom Rom can someone please tell me what I did wrong I'm sure its some small over site on my part.

Also, enable installation of non-Market (untrusted) apps (sideloading):
* COMMON:
* Start the phone normally.
* Enable USB debugging (settings > applications > development > USB Debugging)
* Leave the phone running - do not reboot to Clockwork.
* adb remount
* adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
Linux/OS X:
* echo "update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';"|sqlite3 settings.db
WINDOWS:
* echo update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db
COMMON:
* adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
* Reboot phone and sideloading works. (thanks to fluffyarmada)

[Mods] Mods by Jewremy - v5! NOTIFICATION POWER WIDGET!!!!!

Oh boy...been working on CM7 and have had a whole bunch of other crap going on. Was forced to deodex to port over a certain something by a certain Mr. DroidJunk. ;]
Also, this is a pretty advanced mod. About 6 hours of amp-fueled work for me to do this right. If you want to kang it, I'll gladly teach you. I know we have a bunch of fledgeling devs on the Droid3.
So. Time to DEODEX - I haven't tried it on an odexed system, but the drop in performance is barely noticeable. Flash steeldroid or figure out how to deodex. The method for the DroidX with XUltimate 2.3.2 works.
v5 has this nifty thing. DroidJunk made it for the Bionic. I ported it to the Droid3, changed it to .9.pngs for the backgrounds and indicators, removed the auto-sync toggle, re-did the layout and moved the data toggle next to Bluetooth.
Honeycomb themed everything, sliding door lock screen...just flash it. You'll see.
Oh, also installs bash and nano as well.
DOWNLOADS
v5 - http://bit.ly/oj0y92
v4 - http://db.tt/w4Qs3QPJ
Make a backup first, then flash in recovery.
If you can't figure out how to do that, go home.
Also added a custom loadpreinstalls.sh to keep shell root after a reboot.
Code:
#include
/*
* Your warranty is now void.
*
* I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
* thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
* do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
* before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
* you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
*/
Don't flash this unless you know what you're doing and are comfortable with ADB and rescuing yourself from a brick. Remember, we have an sbf to reflash the Droid3 now. You can disregard the rest of this paragraph, unless you're too lazy to download and learn moto-fastboot, in which case you have just the system dump. Seriously, go get moto-fastboot and the restore files. See that Droid 3 Android Development link above? Click it and find the thread. Worth it. It will save your...phone.
Anyway...
I pulled apart and modified framework-res to my liking
Turned off boot sound.
Car dock stays in portrait as opposed to not rotating at all - tried enabling dock rotation, something about blur breaks the feature and causes the dock to not launch at all.
circle battery with numbers from UOT - uot.dakra.lt
old-style motorola lockscreen (two sliders)
cut animation times in half - Short 75ms, Normal 150ms, Long 300ms
Set lockscreen to skip sliders/slidingdoor if device lock is enabled (pin lock, pattern lock, etc)
Enabled menu key to unlock
A few other mods that I cannot find.
Enabled ethernet connectivity...not sure how to use it, though. My guess is that USB OTG is possible with the right cable.
Modified build.prop to enable AOSP USB notifications, set wifi scan time to 180, CDMA as default mode, increased max events and VM Heap size, couple other things that I don't remember.
Installer is an update.zip - use Droid3 bootstrapper from the market or elsewhere.
That is amazing. Kudos to you. I'm really gunning to try this since it has so many of the things I miss from my OG, but am a little nervous without a proper recovery available yet.

Not sure what's going on. I'll take a look. You do need to have busybox installed, but the 1-click root did that for you. The script backs everything up for you and puts the modded files at /sdcard/modkit/, so you might as well run it manually. Here's the code to run in adb shell. You can do it from your phone, but skip the "stop" command in that case.
Code:
su
stop
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
busybox cp /sdcard/modkit/framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
chmod 644 /system/framework/framework-res.apk
busybox cp /sdcard/modkit/SystemUI.apk /system/app/SystemUI.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/SystemUI.apk
busybox cp /sdcard/modkit/build.prop /system/build.prop
reboot
Also, make sure you don't have Mass Storage mode on. Put it in Charge only, otherwise it'll fail (can't write to SDcard if it can't see it.)
You could just use root explorer and overite the 3 files also. Worked great for me.

Turn off ads w/ Root?

I'm sure this will get figured out but does anyone know if there's a way to move/change/disable files on a rooted HD7 to disable these god forsaken ads without giving Amazon $15 bucks?
Try disabling dtcp_apk.apk in system/app. Its icon says Kindle Special Offers so I think its the ad service, but it may cause issues if you delete it so rename it to .bak to be safe.
Awesome...can anyone confirm this works?
hope not. a sure way to be sure they will do everything they can to patch and lock up as tight as possible.

It does seem to work! The screensaver now shows random book/letters/etc type backgrounds, no ads. I still get the "customers also bought" in carousel view, but otherwise I haven't spotted any ads.
Here's the steps I did:
Code:
# adb shell
[INDENT]
# su
# mount -o remount,rw /system
# cd /system/app
# mv dtcp_apk.apk dtcp_apk.apk.orig
[/INDENT]
# adb reboot
I'm attaching a couple pictures I took of the lock screen. Thanks for the tip!!
UPDATE: As a side note, I tried putting these back and it seems to have disabled them permanently. If I move the apk back to its original name and reboot, it still has the ads disabled.
UPDATE2: Just wanted to comment that my ads decided to come back...took a week or so but they eventually showed up again. I moved the file again as above, and they are gone again (no harm no foul).

I just went into properties of this apk and unchecked all permisions. I can confirm that this worked as well. Still have the random pics, but it also disabled the shop unlock slide with date and time in its place. Will post again in a week to see if this is permanent or if it has caused any adverse effects
RE: Well so far I have not had any problems with the method i took for disabling the ads. They have not returned. And this seemed to be much easier and safer than using adb.

I tried this and it worked great. The ads started this morning after an automatic "Upgrade". The weird thing is that I had to re-root my KF HD because both ES File Explorer and File Manager were both saying that it wasn't rooted. I wasn't getting the option to change permissions on either
app, but I was able to see system files. I was finally able to change permission after a quick re-root.
Thanks for sharing the info. It's been about a week for you. Is the mod still working fine?

Added to my previous post, but incase you didnt see yes its still working great. Did you just get your device? If so I'm guessing you got the upgrade from 7.1.3 to 7.1.5, correct? When amazon does an ota like that it removes root.

I actually replied before you updated your post, so I didn't see it. I bought it 3 days ago. I just checked it and yes, it's currently on 7.1.5.
Glad to hear it's still working. I hope they don't come out with an update that changes the mod. Thanks for the update.

Does anyone know the location of the lockscreen wallpapers that show up on the lockscreen once you have disabled the lockscreen ads? I want to put my own wallpapers in there instead.
It's not that easy. Wallpapers are located in the framework-res.apk under /system/framework
Google search editing the framework-res for more answers. It isn't that difficult but you need to be very careful and make sure you know what you are doing because you can potentially brick your device. Without a custom recovery, you won't have very many options if that happens.

You simply do the reverse of what you did to turn them off. Either rename the file back from dtcp_apk.apk.orig to dtcp_apk.apk, or turn on the permissions to what they were before you modified them. I will say that it took a few days (upwards of a week actually) before it re-enabled the ads. Not really sure what it took for it to re-read that file, but it might have been some combination of me powering down entirely, or an OTA update check that eventually kicked it back in.

[MOD] [P6800] DXMD3 Stock Jelly Bean Phabletized! [HELP WANTED - SCRIPTING PROBLEMS]

DXMD3 Stock Jelly Bean Phabletized!
DISCLAIMER TIME:
First thing's first: I am not a chef, nor am I a developer of any sort. This was just an experiment and it worked. All I'm doing is sharing the results and the method of achieving them.
Also, I am in no way responsible if you mess up your device. That said, these modifications are mostly harmless and reversible, if you follow the instructions to the letter. (Worst case scenario: You flash stock JB again or restore a nand backup and you're safe.)
Oh and your device must be rooted. You can't go around changing things if it's not.
I do need a bit of help with some things, you can read the help wanted section at the bottom of the post,
If you're still interested, read on.
INTRO SPEECH:
I've always wanted the phablet experience on my 7.7, but all of the roms I've tried had imperfections (if ever so slight). If any developers are reading this, please do not take this as an insult. Your roms are wonderful masterpieces. I admit I couldn't even begin to understand how much knowledge and hard work is poured into them. I just wanted a 100% daily driver to have and to hold, meaning as few updates as possible (oh the irony). The closest I could find to a perfect rom was the PAC rom by @daniel_hk, but it always started acting out after a couple of weeks. Might have also been my apps or a combination of apps that did this, I don't know. The customization options on PAC are… It's simply amazing. If you're up for it, do check it out in the development thread. Out of all the roms I've tried, I liked PAC the best. That was a message from our (non)sponsors (my personal opinion). Then I tried E-Robot, which is almost stock – I'd say it's a Note 8 rom modified for our 7.7. But it still didn't feel right. I went back to the stock JB rom and started thinking I could simply alter build.prop's dpi setting and get phablet on stock JB. I was half-right. I did alter it and got phablet mode, but a lot of apps stopped working, a few of them crucial (phone, contacts, …). So I started replacing those apps with apps from the E-Robot rom. And it worked. I've identified and replaced most of the apps and the rom is very smooth. I dare say it's even smoother than E-Robot.
List of apps that need replacing:
- Accuweather
- Most mini apps
- Pen memo
- Camera
- Gallery
- Calculator
- S Planner / Calendar
- Phone
- Contacts
- TouchWiz Launcher
- Task manager
- Memo (text memo)
List of apps I haven't yet found replacements for (HELP WANTED, see below):
- Samsung keyboard
- Reader's hub
APPS YOU'LL NEED:
I like ES File Explorer the most, you can use other file managers if you like. LINK
I find it easiest to flash roms with Mobile ODIN. LINK
If you're not interested in purchasing Mobile Odin, you can look it up on XDA forums. It's available for free.

APP SUBSTITUTION PACKAGE:

Please, do not mirror this as these instructions are not yet 100% complete.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Read first. Then apply.
1) Get the stock DXMD3 Jelly Bean on www.samfirmware.com
2) I can't stress this enough: Back up all of your files on your internal storage. All of them. I will not be blamed for the loss your lolcat collection.
3) Flash it with Mobile Odin and choose to root the rom and inject superuser
4) A custom recovery is probably a good idea. Use either CWM or TWRP and make a full system backup. Just in case. Easiest to flash with Odin.
5) Unzip the "PHABLETIZE!" package to your tablet internal storage.
6) Default home to a custom launcher. Just in case. I used Apex. (You'll be replacing TouchWiz, remember?) Also, Install a custom keyboard. The stock keyboard isn't happy with 213dpi. I use Jelly Bean Keyboard.
7) Turn on "Root Explorer" mode in ES File Explorer (side menu, accessible from the top left bluish globe icon)
7a) Alternatively, you can use LCDDensity from Play. I haven't tested this personally. This is a recommendation from obbeguin. Skip step 8.
8) Make a backup of your build.prop file. Edit the build.prop to be used by the system (/system/build.prop): "ro.sf.lcd_density=160" changed to "ro.sf.lcd_density=213" (the one between rild.libargs and ro.lcd_brightness)
9) Restart and marvel at the half-finished glory of phablet mode.
10) Here is where you would see TouchWiz crash and you'd be stuck if you hadn't defaulted to a custom launcher in step 6. Luckily, you did.
11) Open ES, navigate to /system/app/ and start replacing the apps from the package. Yes, manually. I don't know how to make a CWM flashable package, so again, yes, manually. (HELP WANTED) I'd also recommend backing up the original files (just copy them to a backup folder on your storage). All apps should replace just fine, since they crash when launched anyway. You should also backup and delete their odex counterparts. Do not replace those.
12) I haven't included the camera and gallery apks. The gallery wasn't working well and I found a replacement here. Not sure yet if I can hijack his files to use in my zip so I'm posting a link for the time being. Also, I've found I like the SGS4 dialer and messaging app much better than the tablet apps from Note8. Look for it here.
13) Restart
14) If you have any issues with any of the apps, first try clearing their caches and data or wiping dalvik cache and cache in recovery mode.
I'd also recommend SkyHigh's custom kernel. I like it and it allows me to use ExFat on my external SD card. It's no NTFS, but large files (>4GB) get across just fine and it works on my computer and in my tablet without a hitch.
And for that extra "Startled Android" effect, I went with Xposed framework and per-app dpi settings. Not quite paranoid but does the job ok.
If you like the Samsung keyboard, you might want to give this one a go. Suggested by @stenny
HELP WANTED SECTION:
As written before, I need some help. It would be tons easier to just flash a CWM package over the stock JB and get phablet mode. Trouble is, I can't build it. Getting around to this one. Got around to it. Now I'm having scripting problems. If anyone is script savvy, please check out the code below.

echo "All done. Enjoy you Phabletized 7.7 JB"
The above left my tablet in a bootloop stuck on the bootanimation turned landscape and distorted/stretched. I was trying to accomplish the following: back up the original apks and build.prop file to a folder on the sdcard. The list of apks needing backups would be determined from the list of apks in the replacement folder. And copying the replacement apks and build.prop file to the proper folder in /system.
I hope I've proofread this enough times so that it's decent...
Screenshots:
They're big. There are many, Unhide to see.
Mostly just showing off the Samsung apps. From my experience, most apps are a lot easier to handle on a bigger dpi. Again, if on some apps you don't like the change...go with Xposed framework.
Undoubtedly you'll notice how the fonts in the Settings app seem smaller than the rest of the rom and the alarm clock app seems bigger. You're right. They are. That's Xposed + App settings hard at work. I want the alarm clock buttons big when I'm smacking the **** out of my tab in the morning (300dpi) and don't need the big fonts when I'm fiddling with the settings (160dpi).
By the way, don't mind the "25% brightness" (I had it at -28% on some other screenshot). That's just Lux. It helps keep the display at a comfortable level in the dark. A screen filter basically. I also found this and this very helpful on a big screen and fiddly-sometimes-hard-to-press-when-your-hands-are-messy-when-cooking-and-just-need-to-look-at-the-recipe-one-more-time buttons (the other two persistent notifications).
Coming soon: Flashable zip. I'll get around to it, I promise. Having trouble scripting the thing. Take a look at the help wanted section if you think you can help. Thanks.
It is wonderful seeing someone try to create something for our Tablets...
I wish I could help in your efforts but instead I can only thank and applause you...
Good luck...
actually... e-robot doing the same thing that you're doing... replacing the apk from note 8.0 to 7.7 but they did alter some apk to fit their mod.
btw. you can use the keyboard from e-robot as well. but you need to find all related lib files to make it work on 7.7
Conserning cwm flashable zips... I don't know the syntax either. But I just use a zip from gapps and delete all the contents and modify the outputted text. Don't use a zip from a rom because they often wipe stuff.

You can use the app "app2zip". It shows you all installed apps, then you choose yours from your pack and
click create. This zip file is then flashable in the recovery.

Doesn't e-robot have some issues? I got the distinct feeling it wasn't quite so stock. I might be wrong though.
EDIT: Now I remember! I couldn't get over the flickering wifi icon in the status bar. Annoyed the **** out of me. Trivial, I know. I could live with something not working quite right if it wasn't visible most of the time.

Can this create a single zip for multiple apps or is it one app = one zip?
It creates one ZIP file. So exactly what you looking for.
Just a quick update:
I'm working on a cwm flashable zip that would back up the original apk and odex files and copy the new ones in place. Plus, I've been toying around with other versions of system apps.
I will be posting everything in the next few days - after I test it out.

Concerning the point 7 & 8, wouldnt it be easier to just use LCDDensity for root ?
Using it, it is must more easy to change the density without even having to manually modify the build.prop file... And the phablet mod start for any density higher than 180..
And for people who forgot to install a second launcher, they no need to panic..
They can still go to the tablet settings using the notification bar, even if Touchwiz doesnt work.
There, they can check they are connected to internet and install a second launcher by logging on google play by using a PC.

Never heard of LCDDensity before, but I'll add it to the instructions.
You're correct, the phablet ui starts at 180 (176 I believe), but the navigation bar keys are off center when lcd density is not set to 213.
Sort of defeats the purpose of phablet ui for me. Personally, I changed to a smaller dpi (for a smaller status bar - 195) and removed the navigation bar with the qemu.hw.mainkeys switch. I mainly navigate thru gestures (using GMD Gesture Control) anyway.
Again, you're correct. But when starting out on a freshly flashed rom, some might happen to skip the part where they connect to the wifi or connect their google account. Besides, I've seen Play being hesitant to install and update on it's own - sometimes it requires you to launch it before you get update notifications and automated app downloads which requires a launcher. I want the instructions to be as foolproof as possible. That's why I'll be making a separate flashable zip with a custom home and keyboard, just in case.
On that topic, do you know anything about scripting? I'm having trouble with the update script. Check out the first post.
You can try this note 8 samsung keyboard, it work on both tablet and phablet ui.

Didn't work for me, lots of apps couldn't be pasted in system/app even after R/W, I even tried to do it in TWRP and it still failed

My suggestions:
You sure you're rooted?
You might have free space issues. Try disabling and uninstalling the apps from titanium backup and then pasting the apps in place. Samsung roms are pretty huge and fill the available space almost to the limit.
Pasting sometimes didn't work for me when the apps were running. Try closing them from a task manager. I always did the modding after a fresh boot on a fresh rom.
I hope this is helpful.
