[Q] Relation between open-sourced code and unofficial ROMs (JK5, etc.) - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Last night I finished building the full stock Android 2.2 Froyo ROM (kernel + platform) from Google's open-source code (GIT master branch). I've also been playing with the Samsung Tab kernel (see the cifs.ko / slow-work.ko modules discussion thread, linked below). I am just experimenting at the moment but the ultimate goal is to enable unused features such as FM Radio (Broadcom BCM4329, see link below).
This got me thinking (plenty of time to brainstorm and research whilst code compiles...). I am currently running the "latest" JK5 ROM from Samfirmware (which seems to be working fine so far), but it begs the question: what code exactly is used to build these leaked Samfirmware ROMs ? What device do they come from ?
For all I know, the JK5 build might well be based on GT-P1000T_Oceania_OpenSource.zip, source code that targets devices sold in Austria for the Telstra mobile provider, which operates under the 850MHz band for its 3G network. Now, such uncertainty about the Samfirmware ROMs has major implications in terms of phone/data functionality in various countries. I haven't got a 3G contract so I have not tested JK5 yet, other than for basic Wifi-ing with my home router.
The Samfirmware ROMs don't even come with a change log so we're really trying our luck here, there's no guarantee that the "latest" means the "most up to date" (in terms of bug fixes, performance improvements, etc.). It just means it was built "recently", but it may well be based on some incompatible country-specific source code. Here's a list of known Galaxy Tab codebases:
SHW-M180S KOR DK05 SHW-M180S_OpenSource.zip (Korea)
SPH-P100 USA DJ14 SPH-P100_OpenSource.zip (Sprint USA) (e.g. SPH-P100ZKASPR)
SPH-P100 USA DJ30 SPH-P100_OpenSource_Update1.zip (Sprint USA)
SGH-T849 USA SGH-T849_OpenSource.zip (T-Mobile USA) (e.g. SGH-T849ZKATMB)
SCH-I800 USA DJ11 SCH-I800_OpenSource.zip (the Verizon wireless USA version) (e.g. SCH-I800BKAVZW)
GT-P1000 GT-P1000_SEA_OpenSource.zip (South East Asia)
GT-P1000 GT-P1000_OpenSource.zip (International)
GT-P1000 GT-P1000_HKTW_OpenSource.zip (Hong-Kong/Taiwan)

GT-P1000N BR GT-P1000N_Latin_OpenSource.zip (South America)
GT-P1000T GT-P1000T_Oceania_OpenSource.zip (Austria)
GT-P1000M / GT-P1000R USA GT-P1000R_GT-P1000M_OpenSource.zip (Bell and Roger, respectively)
SGH-I987 USA SGH-I987_OpenSource.zip (USA AT&T) (e.g. SGH-I987ZKAATT)
SCH-I800 USA SCH-I800_US_CELLULAR_OpenSource.zip (U.S. Cellular) (e.g. SCH-I800NSAUSC)
SCH-I800 USA DJ11 SCH-I800_OpenSource.zip (U.S. Cellular)
Source code not released yet:
SC-01C ==> NTT DoCoMo Japan
I've downloaded them all and will try to extract a meaningful "diff" from these various source folders. For example an XDA member recently highlighted DVB TV support in his country (Brazil I think), which not only requires special drivers/code, but of course also needs dedicated hardware (inside the empty space discovered by iFixIt). Such major difference should be visible via source-code discrepancies.
I hope more developers join so we have a better chance to optimize the Tab !

Should be asked in the room of the galaxy S.... The two devices are very similar.

Glad to see someone taking some time to do this. Keep us posted! Hopefully we can get the development rolling on this great piece of hardware. Thank you for your efforts.

Right. We need to diff the stock Android kernel/framework with the Samsung mods specifically addressing the Galaxy Tab, and maintain lists like those ones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784270
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775167
Talking of source code, check this out:

This seems to be the official Samsung repository, where they maintain their Linux kernel patches.

It would be great if someone uploaded Samsung's zipped code to a proper concurrent versioning system, in order to track revisions that are not obvious on Samsung's open-source website (because they publish whole zip archives without version history). GitHub ?

hi daniel, this is off-topic from me ... having a look at the source code that samsung has released for the galaxy tab over at their website ... they did not include the Email.apk did they?

No. There's an "email" folder but it only contains some Mozilla source code for character set / text encoding detection.

That's a real shame.. the galaxy tab email loads wonderfully on the galaxy s, however the layout width/height has some issues.. tried to decompile and edit and recompile, but it keeps force closing -_-

Diry Kernel

Hi !
I just bought a LGO2X in France (must be one of the first, since it's suppose to be available only the next week in France).
I noticed that I had some strange version of kernel and stuffs.
Android : 2.2.2
Base Band : 1035.21_20110218
Kernel : 2.6.32.9-dirty
Build : FRG83G
LGE Version : LGP990-V10a
I saw that a large part of XDA's users had more advanced version of LGE (V10b, c...) and Base Band.
So, the point is : will those elements be updated, when the Android 2.3 update comes out ?
I'm new to the android community, I might say silly things, please pardon me in advance . And btw I'm French, so excuse me if I wrote huge mistakes.
Thx.
EDIT : Damn it, mispelled the title, and no way to edit it. Sorry !
My dutch 990 has the same lge and base nr so dont know what you are reffering too as in updated other versions.
send from mah magic toaster
Well, check the thread on random reboots. Baseband and LGE version are variable.
Plus I'm pretty sure it's NOT normal to have a dirty kernel on a commercial device.
Hi there! Sending this from singapore. Mine also had a dirty k in it.meantime no auto shutdown experience yet. All Are fine. But waiting for xda to mod it.
I have a pre-sale sample, which also had a dirty kernel. I've updated mine with NVFlash, it also changed the kernel, however, I haven't noticed any significant changes ( I had 2.2.1- it became way faster).
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
Okay then, no need to worry in that case thanks.
To be clear though, in order to update a Kernel, flashing is requiered ? No OTA official update could do it ?
The update tool doesn't work for me, I assume because my model is not retail, it cannot read the imei of the phone (at cellular # it stops and says it's not supported, and according to the log file my imei consists of 0-s, which isn't true). It should work for you, so NVFlash is not required for the official roms.
I think however, that you need to flash in order to update the kernel, but I can't provide any information that supports this.

[Q] T-Mobile Galaxy Tab - Few Questions

Hi guys, just this week I got a new Galaxy Tab from T-Mobile, so far so good, but I have a few questions about it.
1-) This is my first time using Android, is there a better version or ROM for this particular tab (or another that is fully compatible) which I should flash into it which is better or gives me more functionality than the default Android installation that T-Mobile puts on it?
2-) How are upgrades of Android OS obtained? I heard 3.0 is out, any ideas if Samsung or T-Mobile will make it available on these devices?
3-) Can "Line2" be used with it? I noticed when I'm connected to Wi-Fi at home Line2 works, but when I'm connected to 3G it wont work.
4-) Is it easy to install Themes on the Galaxy Tab, any tutorials?
5-) Any specific tricks/tweaks or apps, that are a must have for Galaxy Tab owners?
Thanks in advance!
-Eli
I also just got my SGT T-mobile. What is the model number of your tablet? What is the Baseband version of your tablet? Have you rooted yours?
Mine's model is SGH-T849, Baseband T849UVJJB, and yes, I downloaded a program from this board which supposedly roots it, after installing and running the commands it said it had successfully rooted my device, now how do I know if it is really rooted?
Also what's the Baseband? lol sorry but I'm lost, this is my first ever tablet and also first ever Android OS device.

We both have the same model and baseband. I'm not sure what baseband is. You can check to see if your tablet is rooted by going to Applications and look around to see if you can find a Superuser icon.
If it's rooted, I guess your next step is to find a custom ROM and flash it.
Do you remember what you used to root your tablet? Was it SuperOneClick?
Yes, it was the SuperOneClick one from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812367
Baseband is the modem you have. The modem controls the phone, wirelass data, wifi, and bluetooth. Yours is JJB.

Well, I'm not an expert but here is my experience:
1. You should flash the new Overcome experience Hermes:
http://overcome.mimzo.com/
There is also the unofficial cyanogenmod beta, but as you said the overcome is fully compatible and it will not change the feel of the Tab, just adds to the functionality.
2. The updates are two types:
# Official, these are over the air and you will find notifications in the notification area to tell you that there is a new update, or may be through kies for Samsung.
# Unofficial, which is basically flashing other ROMs whether official or custom.
# As for Android 3.0 (which is called honeycomb), it is not officially coming to the Tab. May be after the 3.2 announced a couple of days ago, but I still don't think so. Still, you might want to follow this thread as there are trials to get it fully working on the Tab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122959
3. I don't have any idea about this, as I got mine used and then I rooted and flashed it the day I got it.
4. Of course there are themes for the Android. This Overcome I was telling you about has a Gold theme. There are a lot of ways to get themes on the Tab. I myself use different home launchers with different themes. You don't need to flash anything if you are just looking to change the looks of your device. Check this out and let me know if you like it:
Go Launcher EX https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex&feature=search_result
There are a lot other but this is my favorite. You can even change the fonts of the display.
5. The most common used tips and tweaks that you should use is over-clocking/ under-volting which gives you more speed and less battery drainage.
As for the apps, these are my favorites:
Tango, Photfunia, ezPDF reader, Movies (or IMDB), Springpad (or Catch), File Expert, Go Launcher, Go weather, Google Goggles, Google Shopper, Just reader, Splashtop, Plex, GrooveIP. I guess there are more on my device but these are the ones that I found more functional and fun to use.
Hope this helps...
Thanks rangercaptain,
Hey ahmadshawki, thanks so much, I will check out all of your suggestions, does overcome comes with Gingerbread?
Yes it does.

Any 2.2 rom is froyo (frozen yogurt).
Any 2.3 rom is gingerbread.
You can have either "flavor". They are both in the development section. Both are highly recommended.
Hi guys,
I've been visiting this forum for more than 6 months now, but I think this is my first post. I have a T-Mobile SGH-T849 GT-P1000.
Last year I unlocked it and changed it to a Gingerbread Euro. Below is the current setup:
Firmware version 2.3.3
Baseband version P1000XXJPZ
Kernel version 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XXJQ1
Tab has been working fine, with the exception of:
- often does not remember wi-fi hotspots automatically, need to switch off/on wi-fi to do this
- 3G & phone works erratically. I don't use it as a phone, but those times that I tried I noticed the phone would loose connectivity to the mobile network and needed a reboot in order to fix it.
I'd like to upgrade it to Ginger 2.3.6, but which rom should I use? I checked on the forum, but I'm not sure if I should use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380595&page=3
or any other.
Is my modem correct or should I use this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902323&page=4
to install JL5 modem?
Sorry for the noob questions.
I have a galaxy tab 7+ sgh-t869 I need to chance my build prop in order to play order and chaos online it doesn't support operating system I have no idea how to chance it or what to change it to please help thanks

no LTE on P3720T with P3720 ICS roms (i.e Arlics)

Hi there,
We tried to update a telstra branded P7320T Gtab (Honeycomb 3.2) to the ICS releases based off the 4.0.4 drops from Scandanavian providers for the P7320 i.e Arlics Rom (this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923371 ).
Everything works fine; however 4G APN's do no register, this is most likely a Kernel/Qualcom band mismatch with the Telstra baseband and the updated kernel version in the ICS builds.
Arlics rom does not contain modem/basebands so it is most likely the updated kernel drivers in the 4.0.4 drops misbehaving with the P7320T baseband used by Telstra and Telecom NZ's trail.
Reverting to the Telstra stock solves the problem.
This was tried off a Test Telecom NZ LTE APN (no UMTS functionality - UTMS works ok however).
I would like to hear from any Telstra Australia users who know they are in LTE areas whether or not they get LTE on Gtabs running this rom.
- Apologies for posting here; and not in the thread, the forum policy prevents me from posting their.
@aenertia

Similar experience
I had a similar problem. When I flashed the leaked rom (which wasn't from a Scandinavian provider, by the way, but from a Polish one - forums got it wrong), LTE stopped working. Haven't tried Arlicc's, reluctant to especially now that it seems abandoned.
Sad that the 7320 gets so little love Official ICS release here in Norway has been delayed yet again for the umpteenth time.
You should try the latest version available (XXLPI - to be installed by Odin, no wipe necessary). It seems much better at switching between 4G and GSM/CDMA than the early ICS OTA version I used to have (the one the Arlicc's ROM is based on).

Are you using that on Telstra's network ? Can you post the baseband version?
Sorry, I'm using it in Poland however it's dedicated for other parts of Europe. It contains an upgrade to baseband version P7320XXLP7.
Did not succeed
Until I downgraded this to the last NCM version (a Honeycomb version) again, I couldn't get LTE to work. The TEN Ice Cream Sandwich version from 5.12 did not permit LTE, despite being a Norwegian carrier and me being in Norway.

No Nougat Update for SM-G610Y

Can anyone help me with this.
All the other versions of the J7 Prime (G610F & G610M) have recieved 7.0 Nougart update 6 months ago.
My phone is pretty much the same underneath as the rest of these, No my phone is not carrier locked.
I'm not the only one having this issue, there are a lot of people in the Philippines, Pakistan and here in New Zealand who are wanting this update and cant get it.
Samsung wont tell me anything no matter how much I ask their help desk and support team
I feel like as a customer I deserve to at least know why I haven't got this update but the rest of the world has, and not get continuously told to turn auto updates on when its already on.
Same device bro
Bro, i am a Y variant and i'm on PH. We don't have a choice but to install custom rom to taste the nougat android. Just root your phone, install TWRP then install custom rom like NovaOS or Lineage OS 15.1 for J7 Prime. Just search it and you can find it.
Same issue here...just installed Xenos Rom and its more than enough for me with the features....there are other roms as well
same ;(
Ah, those lazy Samsung coding teams...
My condolences, but you can always install the ROM closest to stock.

I actually downloaded their Nougat based stock rom and flashed it using ODIN. No problems so far... it's just that you won't be able to use their country specific apps which I think is not a big deal.

There are no specific apps for Philippines G610Y except when you purchase through a Telco where settings like boot screen / default web pages all point to the Telco. Flashing Aussie Official G610Y ROM should be fine. In fact this should be a good base to create a custom ROM as it may contain updated drivers and the like.
I been running the Nougat Note FE XenOS v.1.1 without any problem so i dont need to worry bout waiting for an update from OTA

One minor problem I have encountered so far now is whenever I switch to 3G/2G on network mode, it doesn't survive the reboot. It reverts nback to 2G/3G/LTE mode. Other than that the Stock ROm is stable so far. Battery life is incredible.

Need to troubleshoot 1x1. First, I noticed you are using Oxygen kernel. It could probably be an incompatibility with this one.
Another, which I can think of is incompatibility of CSC part if you didnt change your original.

It was still present when I was still using the stock kernel. About the CSC though I have no idea. But maybe you're right because I flashed the original CSC tar.md5 file that came straight from the stock Aussie Nougat ROM. I don't know how I can change it. (Perhaps flash the stock CSC from MM?)

I checked my csc if it changed , and yes it was changed together with xenos. So it might be something else. But then there are CSCs which are not multi CSCs. So i could be wrong.
Edit: ok i did some googling. CSC doesnt affect network selection its the baseband part. You can install phone info samsung to check what versions you are in.

Just tried flashing the old MM modem.bin Seems to work like a charm. Although the network mode still reverts the 2G/3G/4G mode, I'm getting consistent 2G signals now and no more signal drops. I just use 4G whenever I use the phone outside where there is no wifi or when I use Navigation apps like Waze. I assume it'll get the 4G/LTE signal when the signal is strong enough.

That still puzzles me as well. No matter how many reboots I do it just doesn't want to stick to 2G/3G mode.
Update to nougat
I heard that samsung would not release an update to nougat from marshmallow OS j7 prime users here in PH, is there someone that could provide me the instructions on how to download the rom links to update my OS? Please help ?5

Can you kindly guide me on how to flash modem.bin? I flashed NZ Nougat stock ROM on PH-bought G610Y and I'm having problem switching network mode when using dual sim. If I disable sim 2 I have no problem. But when both sims are enabled I can't swith sim 1 from 2G only to 4G/3G/2G. Switching doesn't do anything. It's stuck in 2G only.
Do I simply flash the file that starts with "CP"?
Update: I went ahead and flashed the CP file from Marshmallow and problem is fixed. Thanks for the tip!

I am experiencing problems with the new facebook app on XenOS v.1.1 FB is important for me because I need it for work. So, I decided to flash the New Zealand Nougat G610Y. Here are the steps I took for successful installation official nougat on Philippine based phone:
1. I flashed latest XTC G610Y MM so all partitions contain XTC (Philippines) based settings/customizations (BL / AP / CP / CSC)
2. I flashed G610YZTU1BRC3 Nougat (BL / AP) only which means CP/CSC remains XTC (xtc is multi CSC)
3. after step 2 finishes flashing from ODIN, it will encounter an error, but it will go to recovery mode
4. at recovery mode, I simply reboot the system and enjoyed a fresh copy of Nougat
I did not encounter any problem with network selection and tested rebooting it as well. Hope that helps your problem.
Please Assist me on this (i mean step by step instructions..)

I actually downloaded their Nougat based stock rom and flashed it using ODIN. No problems so far... it's just that you won't be able to use their country specific apps which I think is not a big deal.

Roll back Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 T719 T719XXU1BRA1 from 7->6 - correct firmware advice
Hi,
Sorry for a noob question, just want to make sure I don't get this wrong as I've not reflashed a tablet before and I can't find an answer that specifically addresses this question.
My Samsung Galaxy TAB S2 8.0 T719 4G 32GB Qualcomm 3072 MB is running Android 7.0 and I have a must-use app that won't get along with anything above Android 6, so I need to downgrade.
The Baseband version of the tablet is T719XXU1BRA1.
I'm in the UK, the tablet has LTE, which I need, and it should be unlocked to all networks. It was supplied by Amazon UK but I suspect it's not a UK specific model.
I've searched for 6.x ROMs for this specific version, but cannot find one that exactly matches the model number and I'm not sure if any T719 version will do (eg I think some are network-specific or aren't for LTE-equipped versions).
I'd be happy using an official Samsung 6.x ROM if it'll retain app functions that are blocked by a rooted phone (my bank's app wont work on a rooted phone, for instance) but I'd really like one that gave me control to remove the bloatware and keep things clean, even if that meant sacrificing the bank app functionality.
Can anyone point me towards the specific ROM I should use for either route?
Thanks very much.
J
You can use any T719 rom, only old 6.0.1. available.
Choose from here, slow download but it works https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-tab-s2/SM-T719/
It will be unbranded, all languages available for European roms( e.g Romania)
The only problem that can occur is the bootloader.
On newer Samsung devices it doesn't allow to downgrade.
You can try with Odin.

Shouldn't need to downgrade the bootloader as they are usually backwards compatible with the previous OS version.
Just flash AP.
As for root and apps refusing to work, Magisk hide can handle most of them.
