Just picked up an Atrix HD at lunchtime, intitial thoughts - Motorola Atrix HD

Cliffs: Shut up and read it
To be 100% honest, I don't like it as much as the Atrix 2. The build quality is on par, there's just something too....i dont know...RAZR-esque about it. I had an HTC One X in between that will be given to a coworker now, I'll stick with the AHD for the time being. It feels good in the hand, doesn't seem as prone to slipping out of it like the One X does. I'm afraid i'm going to destroy that thing by dropping it.

The car dock was included, I walked out the door for $108 with the phone and dock. It's pretty solid, but definitely a new design from older Motorola car docks. Basically, you dock the phone, then you slide the power connector into the phone, it's a 2 part method. Not a dealbreaker, but I know i'll forget to slide the power thing over and it'll just kill my battery at some point.
The camera, while better than the Atrix 2, is still not up to my standards. The HTC is still MUCH better quality, but it's not the end of the world. What good is a great camera if I drop the HTC?
The data speeds are absolutely ridiculous, I took a few speedtests with the HTC and then the AHD back to back. I managed about 15-20 down with the HOX, and 30-40 with the AHD. THAT is awesome! So much for my 5gb data cap .
The interface is nice. I quite like what Motorola has done with "Blur" or whatever they're officially calling it these days. I somehow managed to get AT&T Messages handling my text messages, that isnt going to fly with me, I prefer the stock one. I like the swipe features of the icons/widgets on the home screens, very cool even if I don't use them often.
The screen isn't as bright as the HOX outside in direct sunlight, but i'm sure it's as good or better than the GS3. Still not a deal breaker for me. Oh, I did not have auto brightness enabled when i went outside, it is now. I may edit this after I walk outside in a bit. I do feel there is a lot of wasted bezel space, but I'm not the engineer and have no clue what's shoved underneath said wasted space.
The clock/weather/data monitor widget is cool, it actively monitors the amount of data remaining! I really like that, i've used 3.53/5GB this month, thankfully the billing cycle ends on tuesday.
All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase for now. It's a change from the Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 designs, however I don't think it reduces the build quality at all. To me it feels better built than the HTC One X, and miles better than a GS3.
I am taking pic/screenshot requests and questions for the afternoon, so go nuts.
Side-note. While i was at the store, there was a guy upgrading to an iPhone 4S and had a cracked back glass. I jokingly offered him $50 for it, so now i'm the proud new owner of a $60 (including the replacement glass) iphone 4 that will either be given to the wife to replace her dying ipod touch, or it'll show up on Craigslist in a few days and pay for my AHD and a few Abita Andygators.

Smart actions just eliminated any new for tasker or locale. This thing is great!

Tell me where they would be and I'll get them. Not sure why, they're ugly as can be lol.
EDIT: poked and prodded, found the default one. It's a start I guess.

picked one up as well. haven't tested outside, but inside the screen is brighter, crisper and colors more pronounced than my One X. It is especially noticeable for me in Maps and Gmail.I also emailed one of the wallpapers to myself and displayed it on the HOX side by side with the Moto. Crisper on the Moto and colors slightly more vibrant. It is a cooler screen while the One X is warmer, but I prefer how white backgrounds appear on the MAHD. We'll see how the week goes. If the battery will last me through as work day as the HOX does, then it's a keeper as I like the on screen buttons, near-stock ICS feel, etc. Camera is definitely not as good as the One X but still decent and I think I can live with that.
Noten the picture of the wallpaper, my camera focused more on the HOX so in the pic it appears slightly more crisp than the MAHD, but in person it is not.

I have too say the ATRIX HD is pretty sweet! I love the screen and the can.. low light it isn't that great but out in daytime its really good. The screen is beautiful and I love the feel and I'm getting great battery life.. few things I could change would be the home launcher.. way too much like an I phone

Well you start off with one screen like an iphone, well now they have two... but you add more screens as you add more apps and widgets... and as far as i know, i might be wrong but the main screen is the far left one.. like an iphone. and you can't change it at all. i hate it. also you can't use the clock widget on another launcher without root access, or at least it wouldn't work on Nova. so yeah
but other than that i really do like the phone.
---------- Post added at 09:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:46 AM ----------
So I went to the release event Motorola had for the Atirx HD, it was really nice they had some cool stuff to show. well during the meeting the main guy said a very interesting comment, "We had to take somethings out to make it a better price." So after the demonstration i asked the rep, so what "things" did you take out?
he said with a nervousness voice, oh nothing to big, we had to reduce the 13mp cam to a 8 and drop the 16gb to an 8gb. oh and we took out NFC.
and then he said they had a new app that works with NFC but cuz att wanted a lower price phone they took it out. i guess its going to be on the new razor.. so yeah.
that really it. but other than that don't you just love the phone?

Once you set up multiple screens, can you drag the home/main screen set by default as the first screen wherever you want it?
Glad to see some reviews and even comparisons to the HOX. By all accounts the camera is inferior. How does it stack up against the GNex?

Couldn't deal with the battery life and camera, took it back and exchanged for GS3. Sorry guys, i'll check back when the next Atrix pops up and see what's what. The GS3 is not perfect, niether is the HTC One X, but they're a gap bridger for me.

Yup...and the development for the s3 is unbeatable, if the atrix HD had that then I would definitely switch. Oh well... I really like their UI over Samsung and HTC and the build is much better.

I'm assuming they asked for their Vehicle Dock back? Thanks for the pics and review.
So I guess we have AT&T to blame for stripping the Atrix HD of all it's glory and what it could have been (i.e., 13 megapixels, 16gb, NFC). The question is, would you pay $199 instead of $99 for this phone if it included this stuff?

If only it had 13megapixels, 16GB internals, NFC, a 4.7/4.8" screen, and Webtop, it wouldn't be a question for me. I'd get that phone in a heartbeat. But sadly.. AT&T opted it to be a budget phone.. So, no go for me. Gonna get the SGS3 instead.. A shame too. I really had high hopes for the next Atrix. A little heartbroken here. /proudownerofatrix4g

Those two things - camera and battery life - are the only things holding me back from complete satisfaction, BUT...is it really worth $150 more to get a One X or SGS III?? For me, I have to reluctantly say...maybe...we'll see if I can coax more juice out of it first (before my buyer's remorse period is over). Here's a low light picture sample, since there is a lack of those available online.

Its like I'm back in the OG Atrix forum back on its launch day. So much disappointment when everyone started leaving us for the Inspire 4G. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any devs are working on the third Atrix.

The temp has been okay on mine, but I'm home over 90% of the time (telecommute for work) and I'm on WiFi. Some people say having it on 4G it gets a little warm.
I had mine freeze this morning after a phone call. Had to force a reboot (Power + Vol Down).

Returning the Bionic because of it's cheap screen

Simple story
T-Mobile is going to have Samsung Galaxy S II
Sprint is going to have Samsung Galaxy S II
Those carriers have A LOT of devices, Verizon has ONE, and it came 6 MONTHS LATE
Anyway, I waited all these months, and yesterday I signed a new 2 year contract and spent $329
Now, I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S 10.1, and man, that screen is second to none
Samsung just knows how to do a nice screen
Bevore I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, I had the Asus Eee Pad, and I returned that
Not because the Samsung has the better screen, but because the Samsung weight is SO LIGHT that I was attracted to that table
Now this Motorola Droid Bionic is a little on the heavy side, but I don't care about that
But, from my point of view, even though the speed is stupidly high (14Mbps)
I just feel like this screen is cheap
In THEORY, this screen is BETTER than the Samsung Galaxy SII, it has a bigger resolution
but when I move an icon (say I'm rearranging icons in the home screen)
I do like Verizon because it allows me to use 5,7,10 GB of bandwidth
Also Verizon is like $50 cheaper per month since my family already has a plan with Verizon
However, let's suppose that for the next 6 months I have to chose between
Verizon with this Bionic
Tmobile with Samsung Galaxy S II
Sprint with Samsung Galaxy S II
I don't like that with T-Mobile as soon as I enter BestBuy, WalMart, Fry's... the connection speed drops to levels of being 95% useless.
Now, I haven't tested Verizon, but if they took 6 months to bring this piece of crap to my hands, then I don't want to comit to their expensive $350 termination fee
I would be happy with Verizon and Samsung Galaxy SII, but of course, that combo doesn't exist
I live in Orange, CA
Any suggestions?
Anybody else this is the cheapest piece of screen EVER?
OR it's only me?
Verizon only has one phone? I could have sworn I saw about 50 of them on the walls.
then goto another carrier. personally I dont see what the big deal about the screen is. I had a charge and the screen was nice the hardware inside not so much. I also had a xperia play that was true junk. I like my bionic as it fits my needs thats not to say my wife wont end up with it if verizon gets the prime. but for now I like the bionic.
No offense but I have to say this....changing carriers to an inferior carrier just for a device is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.....enjoy your 2 bars at best
My advice....wait for roms
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
If u want we could trade my charge for ur bionic, if ur not so happy with it.

I'm probably taking mine back.
I hate this screen. Yes, I came off a Samsung too.
I don't really have anything bad to say about the phone otherwise. It's really good. However, for what I paid for the phone (paid full retail), I don't want to feel like I'm looking at a washed out cheese grater.
Roms aren't going to help that.
I'll probably go back to my Fascinate for another month or two until either the Vigor or Prime come out.
Haters gonna hate.

Hi guys, don't hurt me but I really don't understand where the people complaining about the screen are coming from. I mean, if I put my nose within 5 inches of the screen I guess I can see some pixelation, but I don't operate my phone from that distance so I don't have a chance of seeing it in normal use. Am I some troglodyte, or is this problem related only to some phones?
I also haven't had the issue where restarting causes you to lose aps.
I suspect that people who really flip out over the super AMOLED screens are those to whom over-saturated colors are most appealing (my wife is one of those), and those who are ambivalent or even turned off by the screens are those who are more attracted to desaturated or "mature" colors. I'm one of the latter, as I well know by having spent a lot of time picking out colors in my local home improvement store and analyzing why certain colors appealed to me and others did not. Consequently, I harmonize with the pentile screens better than with the AMOLED ones.
I don't believe the SG Tab 10.1 has a super AMOLED screen, so I doubt a reaction to that tablet is relevant from a screen perspective. I believe the 7.7" version is supposed to have one though.
I know it seems like Verizon isn't getting all the best phones, what with the Atrix hitting AT&T months and months ago and them not getting the SGSII at all, which was a great disappointment. But things have a way of leveling off over time. Another thing is that we focus so hard on the phone that's just around the corner that we forget what's already there. Verizon had two solid entries in the 4G LTE world, the Thunderbolt and the Charge before the Bionic was released. Both are very solid devices and have faster network than any other domestic phones.
And then we've got stuff coming down the pipe like the Vigor and a new Moto phone toward the end of the year, plus some beast from Samsung and perhaps even the Nexus. A year ago, when the X came out, it seemed like Verizon owned the Android world. But the pendulum swings, and in this industry it swings really fast. I think that your reasons for picking a carrier are far more important than any single phone, and that it's probably wise to see it through unless there are very strong reasons beside the phone to jump ship.
One other thing. It's a lot less trouble for you and a lot less expensive for Verizon if you research and test drive the phones and tablets you're considering before you buy them, and avoid having to return them. That drives prices up for everyone, and it's not necessary if you have a retail location in your area where you can see the devices in person. It also wastes less of your time. I'm not preaching at you, my friend, just putting some thoughts out there to ponder.
Moto's pentile screens are pretty washed out, but that's not even what I can't stand about them; I can't stand the pentile sub-pixel layout. I hated AMOLEDs when they used a pentile format (Galaxy S, Nexus S for starters). The SAMOLED+ completely solved the "bug screen" issue by using a traditional striped sub-pixel pattern. It's a wonderful thing, and I hope pentile goes the way of the dodo soon. I was about to get a Bionic until I played with the screen a bit. There's no way I could live with it.
Honestly, are half of the people in this thread joking?

It's not a matter of being a hater. I bought it. I gave it a shot. It doesn't work for me. I take it back and get something else later.
I don't see how that's being a hater, unless you're saying I should stick with a phone I'm not happy with simply to be in the club.

While I found the lack of color saturation mildly annoying, it was something that I could deal with. I had lasik done so my vision's very sharp and can pick up a lot of minute detail. I'm not saying I'm eagle eyed by any stretch of the imagination, but the acuity is good enough that I notice the checkerboard all the time. Others eyes are built differently like you said, so they pick up on different things.

I think that's generally a fair statement. Thing is though, when you're on the borderline, it takes more than just 10 minutes playing with it to get an idea if something is tolerable or not in the long run. The more I worked with the phone, the more I found that it was a deal breaker despite the other positives of the phone. I still lose some money, and the restocking fee is reasonable. And I'm sure Verizon factors in a certain amount of returns into their pricing as well.
I can see why Moto made the choice they did considering the energy savings. Just doesn't work for me. If the Droid HD comes out, or whatever they call it and it has the issue resolved, I'd give Moto another shot assuming the phone's at least rootable.

It's not about having it all. It's about being able to accept trade offs in something. What one person will accept is different than what another will.
I'm sure there will be trade offs with other phones too. They'll just be different.
Lucky for you Verizon has a 14day no worry policy so there you go.... may be a way around the termination fee...

Dude
Do this
DOWNLOAD LCD RESOLUTION
Change NEW DENSITY to 270
Reboot
Enjoy
It feels like a big bad ass Tmobile G2X (that was my previous phone)
It's not Samsung Super AMOLED or whatever, but it is 92%-95% as good as my Tmobile G2X screen
The extra resolution really messes up everything
My only question right now is
1) Droid BIONIC with Verizon
2) Samsung Galaxy S II with Sprint?
Let's say I want
1) at least 3-5 bars everywhere in Orange County
2) I want to enter WalMart, BestBuy, Frys... and still have a good working internet connection
Which one should I chose?
I don't really need 14Mbps (although it's so cool to see that speed on a freaking phone)
However, with Tmobile, I would enter to Best Buy, my internet would drop, it was horrible
In terms of internet availability, any advice between Verizon vs Sprint?
I REALLY like the LCD Resolution program, I'm happy with my device now
IT IS A REAL ISSUE though, for the people that say that I am over reacting
It's soooo pixelated its horrible

Pentile
Never heard of it
I had a Asus Eee Pad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 had a better screen
However I didn't switched from the Asus to the Galaxy because of the screen
However I DID switched because the Galaxy Tab is the lighter tab out there, so I can actually read books and do all the stuff, and I LOVE my tablet right now
So, screen is cool, but I wouldn't change just for a screen
However with the screen as pixelated as the Motorola Bionic (and the fact that they were delayed 6 months), I was 80% sure I was going to return it to the store within 14 days
However with that app LCD Resolution, now I am not going to return my phone
UNLESS
Sprint and Samsung Galaxy SII work wonders
I think I will buy (depending on the cash) the Samsung on September 16th.
Then I will test them both, and then I will make my final call.
I like Sprint, they have cool phones (HTC EVO phones, Galaxy SII...)
Anybody knows if their internet drops here in Orange County?
or is the internet from Sprint stable?
My MAIN complain is that, as a former Tmobile user, the internet would just drop as soon as I enter a mall, store, etc

Pentile LCD is by far "cheap"..
Moto chooses Pentile because it's better on your battery and it's brighter than traditional LCDs when comparing screens at the same power rating.
I'd rather have a "battery saver" screen than a "bling bling, oh gnoes, 5% battery warning" screen.
Quite possibly the most useless thread on this bionic forum.
"me don't like screen, me return"
Really?
What exactly is the point in posting this? You mad bro?
If you returned it for your own reasons, so be it, why post it in here?
My eyes are pretty good, this screen is just fine, returning a device because it *might* look a little less vibrant than another one AND going to an inferior carrier IMHO is just beyond petty. But whatever works for you. It's your money. You should buy what you really like, no matter that it is a gram on the other side of a 10 pound scale.
But why... why post about it? Completely pointless.
I dont really give a crap what the technology behind the screen is.. If I cant see it in my S2000 on a nice sunny day w/the top down then I dont want it.
thats why i sent my incredible back, thats why I sent my fascinate back, the DX was decent but not great..
The bionic.. is awesome. I can see it in direct sunlight w/my sunglasses on.

The phone over all is very good, I had a very good experience when I had mine. It all depends on what you are wanting to do with you phone, somepeople will root their phone and others will not, as for that development has slowed down but there are many custom roms out there.
Basically last HTC phone on at&t with soff, now everything is locked tight.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
No don't buy it. It's almost a year old, about to hit eol status any time, stock is buggy, a bit laggy after you use it a while, and battery life is pure garbage, 8 hours is the maximum I've ever gotten out of it. If you do unlock and root, wcx's rom fixes most of those issues but you just forfeited your warranty because if you relock the bootloader it says "re locked" in the bootloader screen. Wish I knew that, I think my charging port is getting loose and probably on par to quit working... I really don't know what I'll do

I would not recommend it, get a Samsung Galaxy S III if your are into development. if u like HTC for its sense get the One X, but that phone is getting old also. Development of HTC phones is going to the ****ter. I am quite happy with HTC phones if its rooted to run TiBU and the bloatware from ATT is gone.
Well...everyone's being negative about it...before I get started I own both the HTC vivid and the Samsung infuse
Despite what everyone else says the vivid is a great phone, and has the best stock experience with the least amount of bugs I've ever used, the battery life is not to bad and I'm satisfied with the life it gives me..on average I get at least 12hours of battery life...that's with 3-31/2 hours of screen on time -brightness at auto, at least 30 minutes of music, data always on in my semi lte area (majority of my area has it but there are a few places like my school where I get no lte), WiFi always on, auto sync always on (have my Google and Facebook account set up to sync), and GPS always on...as you can see I do nothing to try and save my battery life and it makes it through 12 hours with a good ~30% to spare when I plug it in the charger
its very fast and snappy...
Its only downfall is lack of development...but if I can get cyanogenmod 10 going...that will change very quickly as it opens the door to tons of aosp based roms and ports
So...if your a flashaholic and love flashing ROMs...at the moment this phone is not for you
But if your looking for a fast, snappy, smooth phone and staying loyal to one ROM or even stock sense...then this phone is perfect
Again...I've had no problems with stock sense 3.6...and personally think I like stock sense 3.6 almost as good as any of the available ROMs...I often find my self running a ruu to use stock again...and find I stay in stock for a longer time period then custom ROMs

My status today. I was having signal issues and it tried to sync during them and literally in 20 minutes I went from 65% to 40% power. 6 months later I am just over this phone. I on average get 8 to 10 hours... On standby. The problem is battery hogging lte, a dual core, a 4.5 inch battery hogging lcd screen and a ridiculously small 1650mah battery to power all that. You look at the back and htc probably could of fit a 3000mah battery on it if it didn't have the angles and filled the whole back. It probably takes 3 charging cycles just for me to get through one day.
And I have to disagree with a great stock experience because of battery life, and more bugs than Joes apartment. Wifi shutting on and off at random and mobile data lately for me has not been consistent. Not to mention on the bloatware at&t put on this phone. SwiftKey has been laggy from day one while it ran flawlessly on my much weaker captivate. I was in the market for a non lte s2, I should have went for that instead.
And then HTC gave us the shaft on sense. Instead of giving us the much nicer 4.0,they ported 3.5 to ics and called it 3.6 and 3.6 does everything in its power to make you feel like your still using gingerbread. Don't get me wrong I loved this phone at first but the honeymoon is over, I'm ready to sign some divorce papers. Sucks being broke, I'm ready for a nexus but I'm also hoping by the time I can afford one they'll have the new models out.

Maybe you just got a bad device...as I've stated...I get 12 hours at least with 30% to spare...my vivid has lte, 4.5 inch screen, dual core, and a 1650mah battery...so those definatly are not the problem...I only notice like a 5% difference if I leave data off all day...and I do have lte for a good 80% of my day
I just don't like when people assume everybody has the same problems they have...just because you have bad signal and battery doesn't mean everyone does...If I were to have an iPhone 5 I would instantly trade it for an android...even for the vivid
In short, my vivid has the same specs as you and I get decent battery life...and I do nothing to try and save battery...only reason I'm using my infuse instead of my vivid is because I keep flashing experimental cm10 builds on it and need a phone handy
I guess people just expect these powerful smart phones to have the same great battery life of the old Nokia brick phones lol our phones are basically mini laptops that never go to real sleep cause they are constantly looking for signal and running background tasks to keep our phones smart and not a giant dumb phone...how can you expect hours of battery life from that? Most laptops only get 3-4 hours of actual use...my vivid seems to be on that same pattern of 3-4 hours of actual use, aka 3-4 hours of screen on time
End of my rant...I usually try not to rant but when I'm sick I can't help it

I know they use more power but I never complained about my captivates battery life. To be fair it was only 150mah smaller but didn't have lte, a dual core, and had a super amoled screen which naturally uses much less power than a lcd.
I gave HTC a fair shot and I'm not to impressed, I feel like I got burnt twice by them with the flyer and this phone. And the stupid "relocked" bootloader... Why is the bootloader locked to begin with? My captivate took all of 5 minutes to root with a super one click program, and didn't wipe anything. Locked bootloaders are bs. And s.... S! Wtf is s anyway? It another hurdle put on by htc. "so you unlocked your bootloader and you rooted but wait... You still need s off!" s stands for **** imo. An htc exclusive.
And speaking of s why does this phone require some stupid wire trick technique when the flyer had a nice program called revolutionary to achieve it? Hacking is half the fun of choosing android and htc went out on a limb to ruin it for everyone with this phone. Cm was always a safe bet... Till I bought htc. Makes me cringe checking the captivate forum and seeing cm10 nightlies when my new phone that's supposedly world's better is dead at stock ics.
I don't really want an iphone just saying I'd think I might enjoy one more than this phone right now. Typing this message just took 5% of my battery btw. This in general is a text book example of androids problem. In the middle of nexus devices, galaxy s devices, and one series devices, as well as optimuses and xperias, and razrs, came the vivid, a general "phone of the times" that was marketed poorly and forgotten just as quickly. This is the Droid Bionic of at&t. Everyone who bought one gets screwed.

And what's with the stupid sudden drop from 29% to 14%? Ever since I got this phone it does that. I'll check a text, have 29% power left, cool should be good for a little while then a couple minutes later I hear "wah womp" in my pocket, I pull it out "your battery only has 14% remaining please connect it to a charger. I actually have to like my phone because i bought off contract,
The Vivid is a good phone, and it does work great when u set it up to run efficiently, but the Vivid is suffering the middle child syndrome, and it is being neglected, but there are development done outside of this forum, i have no idea what it is like, all i run is Stock with root and debloated, battery is not bad either, gives me 12hrs
Well if you guys like it, more power to you. My wife has no complaints. If you aren't a heavy user like I am, and don't care about rooting its perfectly fine. Sorry if I got riled up, I was really hating my phone yesterday.
I'll be fair in saying the camera is awesome. One of the phones few bright spots

I really see no reason why you'd get this phone at this point, especially if you like any kind of rooting or flashing. I'd probably try to get a used Gnex or SII if I was in a low budget situation.

Yeah getting back on topic, I won't recommend this phone just because it's all but eol and development is all but the dead for it and if you need a cheap phone, gs2 or gnex all the way.

Had my Vivid for almost 11 months now. Stock with ICS "upgrade" (fixed some problems but created more). No real problems overall. I plan on keeping it through my 2-year agreement. I enjoy using it.
But would I buy one now? No. It won't get another OS upgrade. The newer phones have, or will have, better specs.
I'm drooling over the new HTC OneX+ which may come out in the U.S. by the end of the year (no official announcement yet). Among the reasons I got the Vivid were the SD card slot and the removable battery. But the built-in memory will be 64 GB, and by making the battery non-removable, they can actually use a larger battery. It will have Android 4.1 to start with.
Here is an article on the OneX+

Well I'll be jumping ship soon.

So T-Mobile is doing the pay your etf thing now so I belive I'll be going there end of the month. Which means bye bye to my atrix.
But I have to decide on a new phone.
So what do yall think I should go with?
Sony xperia z1s
Nexus 5
GS4
LG g2
Or the HTC one.
Too many choices lol.
Sent from my PACMAN MATRIX HD MAXX
To my choice will be Nexus 5 and LG g2 hands down. I have both and i prefer the nexus for some reason.
Main reason I was looking at the Sony was because of battery life. How do those compare? Also kinda cool it's waterproof.
Sent from my PACMAN MATRIX HD MAXX
Well you need to remember as a flashaholic you are you need a phone that will satisfy you in 3rd party support. Lol
All of those phones have good support. As for comparison im bad with that but you have the option to look up at the phonearena website and compare as many phones you want side by side.
For gs4 even is a good phone but i never been a fan of touchwiz same reason i upgrade to moto blurr.

I had the AtrixHD and now I own the N5 and the N5 camera is better but saying the N5 camera is abysmal is just not true and look like you just spread what you read over forums. Same goes with the N5 bad battery life, various manufacturing defects and bad speaker quality. (I'm looking at the serial RMA people)
You pick the posts from loud mouth people but skip over the VAST majority of people that are silently happy with the N5.
My wife use the AtrixHD with the original battery and she is very happy never complained about the battery life.
the N5 is a 350$ superphone and the value is very hard to beat (the moto G is also a very good choice). If you need to do professionnal pictures.... well you shouldn't use a smartphone to take them.
Note : I always buy my phones unlocked so I don't fall for the "99$ Note 3 with 80$ plan" tricks. My 350$ N5 and AHD are both on a 40$ 1Gb/unlimited calls/SMS (Koodo Canada with rebate for BYOD users)
edit : the N5 is freaking fast, freakingly cheap, well supported by modders and always updated to the latest OS by Google. And I LOVE the wireless charging

you can search with key words and get actual side by side reviews by owners (as an example "Nexus 5 vs Moto X" )

you can find many reviews by OWNERS of any 2 devices. I posted the "N5 vs whatever" but you can search for "whatever vs whatever"
When I got the Nexus 5, I was also looking at the Note 3 as my business phone. Went for the N5 as it was literally half the price of the Note3 but I'm happy with the N5 as I'm pretty sure I would be happy with a Note3.
Truth is : go for the BEST supported phone with the latest technology inside (some of the phones you listed are considered old even if they are good)
Edit : After high expectations of Motorola releasing updates for the MB886, jumping around every time an elusive possibility of upcoming firmware upgrade poping up on the internet. Going to a Nexus device I KNOW FOR SURE will get constant updates is really something else. (then having the stock Android experience is nice even if the AHD is pretty close to stock.)

I learned that from reviews. I meant the weak camera as relative to the top line phones out there. My bro has note3 and after seeing its pics its hard not to believe what they say in the reviews, its camera truly next gen.
So that's what I compare it to. This thread is posted in 2014 so getting a "good enough" camera in 2013 will become a pretty bad camera this year, just like the AHD camera is now.

Here is a reviews on the cameras of most new phones :

Maybe I'm not picky but the AHD pictures I took are decent for the use I make of them. I wouldn't take wedding pictures with a phone anyway.
Well, as an example, my Nexus 5 takes better pictures than my Canon Sd1400is. Most pictures I take are in low light with HDR+ enabled on the Nexus 5. Bonus points : I also use a macro lens and a fish eye lens with magnetic ring that hold nicely on the steel backed N5 lens.
Some of the pictures I took with the nexus 5 over the last few weeks :

I was about to say that about the note3 and our 2-3 yr old DSLR too, haha.
Its funny how these little pinhead cams went from 2008 "barely noteworthy" to 2010 "usable" to 2012 "barely enough" to 2014 "more than enough".
If you remember years back the general opinion of photographer pros was with that size of lens it will physically never be possible to have something comparable to a normal camera. Clear example software innovation is behind hardware in our times.

it's off topic but right now I consider buying a point-and-shoot digital as a waste of money; the tech is moving way too fast. Unless you have to zoom far away (optical zoom) you can get away with any smartphone.
I would say nexus 5 i would get a nexus 5 if i could afford one,i may be getting a moto g google play edition or a nexus 4
htc one is nice looking and hold good in hand. But speed-wise, htc one and gs4 are short in front of N5.
lg g2 might be better in hardware than N5( camera, screen, etc) but lg is really suck at software updates. Remember last year's flagship lg optimus g? Now still has 4.1 while N4 has 4.4.2!
After sold my optimus g I jump to N5 without looking at g2 at all.
Using psx rom for N5 now. Everything is very fast. Even way better than Atrix HD using holoblur.( Atrix hd with holoblur is the one of the smoothest phone I ever used).
Camera is not bad in N5 compared to htc one or gs4, personal experience.
Ended up getting a note 3. It wasfun guys. I'm out.

I have both on me to review for a while. The M8 is obviously heavier, a little taller but not quite as wide as the GS5. I prefer something compact to better use in one hand, like an iPhone, but either one isn't as bad as I thought to use with one hand (although still somewhat difficult). I'm really enjoying the GS5's design. After using the M8 for a week, it already feels a bit dated for some reason. I'm glad the GS5 doesn't use virtual navigation buttons, allowing more screen space. Those are basically my initial impressions between the two for now.

My gf has the M8 and I have the S5. Only a few days now but I like them both. We both had hung onto our original Rooted and ROMed Notes before these.
Some initial impressions:
S5 is lighter so maybe a bit easier to one hand, although after the Dell Streak and Note anything seems small and easy.
M8 feels more solid due to design/weight, but that is more a perception than function thing. The all plastic Note was fine so I don't expect an issue with the S5.
Screens are comparable, both very nice; different but one isn't distinctly better than the other in real life usage.
Speaker sound is obviously won by the M8, not even close. The S5 is ok, but the M8 is designed for sound and it shows.
Performance seems great for both, although I haven't had the M8 in my hand as much.
Reception (LTE) is the same in a side by side test on my table, just using the on screen indicator. Both are better than the Note.
I actually like the on screen keys on the M8 as they are the same as my tablets, I'm getting used to the S5 home button but I haven't had a physical home button in a long time (since the iPhone 3g- ...don't judge me!).
We both ditched the Stock UI for Nova and/or Apex Launcher immediately so I have no idea how Sense and Touchwiz compare in usage other than they felt both restrictive and simplistic off the bat.
Let me know if there is anything specific you want to know and I'll check it out; but after a few days around both I'd be happy using either device.
Drew
Here my review as I've had both devices in the past couples of days.
Design m8> s5
Both phones to me look great but the design on the m8 is sexy! When I saw the s5 all I've seen where white models, which to me made the phone look horrible cause of the added width made the screen look smaller than it actually is UNTIL I got my black s5 and loved it as soon as I traded my m8 in.
Camera s5> m8
Pics on the m8 ON THE PHONE look amazing but when crop you see the flaw in the 4mp shooter. S5 camera just clearly is the better point shoot camera if you want to use your pics past social media uploads. If not then M8 should do you fine.
One hand use s5> m8
As sexy as the m8 is the back is slippery and I felt very uncomfortable one hand using the phone and the fact that the m8 is narrow and taller reaching the top of the screen was a scary thing to do as I was running the phone with no case whatsoever. Case Will solve the slippery back but with the s5 I don't feel like I need a case as the back is nice to touch and being that the phone is lighter than the m8 makes me feel I have one hand control of the phone at all time.
Speakers m8> s5
Don't really need to go into this and one of the features I miss on the m8 as I do listen to a lot of music.
Screen draw
Both are beautiful
Features s5> m8
S5 more featured packed but the features in the m8 are no slouch
Wish the s5 had the double tap to wake the phone but since it has the finger print I can see why they didn't go with that feature. Overall while some think their gimmicky the features on the s5 are fun and very useful to use when need be.
Internal memory m8> s5
More internal storage for the same price as a 16gb s5 is always gonna be better for some. NOW the SD card slot is working great for me so my Internal memory can be just for apps but those that don't like SD then note the s5 32gb will be slightly more on contract and off contract than the m8.
Battery life s5 > m8
My s5 is doing great and I love the feature with the power saving option offering a extended mode for those needs when Your at 10% and won't be near a charger for period of time.
But the m8 battery life is just as good as the s5 with my units I had.
Custom Roms m8> s5
One of the big reason xda was started for and unless u have the t-mobile variant then root and maybe a stock tw rom is all your gonna get from the s5 att model. But the experience with the new tw is very nice and I'm not seeing lag as previous galaxy phones in the past
So basically it comes down to this
Features or custom roms?
Top build quality or water resistant plastic?
4mp or 16mp camera?
Boomsound or fingerprint?
I don't think you can go wrong with any of the two flagships. Custom roms are great but some don't function and leave features that sold you into the phone from the beginning. Samsung is becoming apple which is not a bad thing. I remember when HTC was doing the locked bl and fans went nuts then they slowly changed their ways of tactics. as a phone the s5 and the m8 IS that plus some. now I'm more than happy with my s5, you may need your root and that's it which I see s5 having at some point very soon. But if u need your custom kernels and aosp roms then don't even look at the s5. Hope this helps those deciding between the two....

Still mad at ATT gutting the chipset for the stupid LTE, but such is life. Good to see a waterproof flaship, at long last. Korea's finally starting to catch up to Japan in physical features.
GS5 Typo
Not sure if this is just on the ATT variant but I found this amusing...

Coming from an Lg optimus G Pro..... got an M8 on 4/17 and started having issues with it resetting the home screens for no reason. Im sure it is probably just a rare bad unit but since it is my first HTC, I decided to return it and get an S5.
Really no reason to write several paragraphs on the comparisons as most of the comparisons done so far is what I have seen as well. To sum it up
*The HTC is elegant, cleaner interface, not as "gimmicky", looks and feels better made (although covering it in a case takes away all that beauty advantage), and has better external sound (by a lot). This not only applies to music but also to speaker phone calls. For those that are still confused about the sd card The US version DOES HAVE an SD slot on the left side opposite to the sim tray, so that argument is mute. The onscreen buttons are a pain to get used to unless you are coming from something with the same.
* The S5 takes better pics (not by a lot and you really only notice when they are side by side unless you have a photographers eye), the s5 is water and dust resistant (this is a biggie impo), i think the s5 battery is going to be a bit better, I dont see any real world difference in the screen clarity or color between the two. You will never notice any difference in speed rather in everyday apps or playing something like riptide, the s5 operates hotter and does not dissipate processor heat as well as the m8. Im worried about the charging port cover breaking on the s5. Too bad they did not get rid of the fp scanner and the hr monitor and spend the money on dual speakers.
*Photos and water resistance important = S5
*Sound and cleaner less gimmicky important = M8

Leaving samsung after 6 years
i have been with Samsung since their flip phone. and i even dealt with the stupid boot loader lock on the s4 for a year. and i recently got the galaxy s5 not even a week and i am going to exchange it for the htc one m8. I was greatly disappointed to find out that the Galaxy S5 (SUCH A POWERFUL PHONE) was locked down. It truly depressed me. and then recently i found out you can unlock the htc one m8 boot loader at their website, THAT IS AWESOME, but why cant sammy do that? its dumb. so i just wanted to let everyone that reads this know that htc CAN be unlocked. unlock crappy sammy. And to be honest i love the Galaxy S5, its powerful, fast, and amazing. but i cannot go another year without custom roms, kernels, and recoveries, thanks to my s4 being locked, i never got to learn the newest roms, kernels, or recoveries. so in exactly 4 days im leaving the locked down chamber of samsung and entering the freedom of htc
I would love to hear comparison of the battery in the LG G2 vs this phone. I am tossed up on going back to the LG since my experience with battery on this phone has been subpar.

I guess this fits in this category. Every once and a while I'll check a new phone against a GoPro. For people that use Android apps to gather telemetry and what not on autocross / road courses, it might be of interest.
I'm still not a GS5 owner yet. No 32GB model along with the locked bootloader has really turned me off buying one (and I'm not going to pay full price for one from T-Mo, or switch carrier due to my work discount).
At this point I've got my eye on the OnePlus One when it comes out. Unlocked, running Cyanogenmod out of the box, nice. A little bigger than I'd like considering it's in the same class as the Galaxy Note 3, but it's still pretty enticing, especially for the price.
I've been a Samsung user for several years now, but I think AT&T has ruined it with their nonsense. I might just save my subsidized upgrade for something better down the road.
I am currently on the HTC m8. Having this itch to swap it for the Galaxy s5. Anyone had any regrets having done this? Anyone here preferring the HTC m8 over this?

I still prefer the M8, mainly due to Sense 6. Much better user experience compared to TouchWiz IMO. I also prefer its design and rear curvature laugh a bit better.
I have the itch as well to switch to the S5 but I know I feel I will regret it.

Time article
""The world's biggest handset maker has replaced the head of its mobile design team amid criticism of the latest Galaxy S5 smartphone.""
I would be curious how much of that criticism stems from America? How much of that I wonder is actually not because of the Samsung design at all, but more because of frustrations experienced from the 2 big carriers turning off features designed by Samsung and then adding their own junk on top of turning things off (like they know better than both the phone designer/manufacturer and the major App producers.)
Forced updates that contain more bloatware, turning off great features like wifi calling, initial loading of bloatware that most people would like to disable in favor of other free apps that do the same thing quicker, better, and with less memory load. Hmm Samsung; maybe your head of design team needed replacement, but I sure would look at other factors. Meanwhile Im back on my OGP until I can sell this S5 and jump ship myself.

Hello! New Nexus 5 user.

Wow. I upgraded today from a Galaxy S3 to a Nexus 5. In my 4 hours of using this phome, I have loved every second. One complaint is the speakers. While playing San Amdreas, holding the device blocked the speakers. Any suggestions? Otherwise, this puts my S3 to shame. I called 3 different T-Mobile stores and only one of them in my area actually had one in stock. I was able to get this wonderful device for a mere $27 as the taxes are up front. Anyway, goodbye Scamsung Crapaxy S3. Hello Nexus 5. I say scam cuz
S3 at T-Mobile:$432
Nexus 5 at T-Mobile: $396
Yeah
You decide which is better.

The N5 a year later is still an amazing device. So amazing, that after selling my first one about 6 months ago, I ended up buying another one a month or so ago. The damn thing is fast as hell and buttery smooth, and performs just as well as anything else out there. You made a great purchase, and I hope you enjoy the heck out of it.
As far as the speakers are concerned, it's annoying but it is what it is. I'm used to it, because I'm also an iPhone user and they've always had the same problem. I've learned to adjust my grip so the speaker isn't covered, but it's still annoying. One thing I can recommend, is that you buy a Moga Pro Power controller. I have one for Android, and I also have the Moga Rebel for my iPhone 6, which is essentially the same thing. If you aren't familiar with it, it's just a game pad, but it has a built in clip to hold the phone. No speaker blockage, and gaming with a controller takes things to a completely different level. It works awesome with the N5 and good news for you- San Andreas has native support for it. Check it out- http://www.mogaanywhere.com/controllers/propower
I also hate how my hand covers the speaker when gaming in landscape mode. If I hold the phone so that doesn't happen, it just feels awkward. Other than that, loving this phone, still.
Welcome here! Quite an upgrade from an S3 I had one way back. The N5 is a superb phone imo. I've been on it since launch day and it continues to satisfy my gadget addiction even 1 year later! Enjoy it
Yeah. So much faster than an S3. Even with CM offsetting the crappiness of it. TouchWiz was too slow and unusable. I hope to have this device until I can buy a OnePlus One from T-Mobile. But that'll never happen. I can't believe how smooth and seamless everything is on this phone.
Thanks. I have heard of those controllers before. I will have to look into buying one eventually. I have a USB OTG cable so I can already use an Xbox controller if I want to.
I just upgraded from my Nexus 4 to Nexus 5 . . Don't regret that decision . . . The nexus 4 is still a decent device but I was itching to have the nexus 5 , lovely experience I've had with the n4 and the n5 enhances it further. Oneplus One will be my next upgrade or its successor because the chipset is 32bit and will not fully take advantage of L's 64bit support.
I had an htc one x tegra 3 which has cost me almost 45€ monthly. Now i have a n5 which is by a longshot better and have 30€ per month... Same data and call plan btw... Logic?
I had two GS4 which are hw damaged without any reason, couple days ago i buyed this device really can't complain on anything except cam recorder audio and some sw issues with my first installed rom(Mahdi). Also still can't believe what ppl on youtube saying for N5 battery life because for me it's better than on GS4.Really great device a lot of faster than Touchwiz.

Turn phone 90degrees clockwise instead of counter clock wise. This way speaker is a the top making it less prone to being covered.
N5 has 1 speaker only. The other one is a microphone.
Use this app and those settings. Makes the phone a bit louder.

I don't want a 5.9 inch screen. The Nexus 5 serves me well for what I need to do. Besides, better than S3

If nexus 5 is outdated...i guess 99% of the smartphones with soc older than sd800 are also outdated .....
Oh wait u have a nexus 6 ?
Using less than a day
Im just experiencing my first 24h of this amazing device. I was a bit confused between HTC One M7 ( must mention its look and build quality ) and N5, but the purple tint camera problem of M7 and the too damn high price point was ruined all of my expectation. Eventually bought the N5, 16G with Nillkin case and clear screen protector.
I was a Xperia Ray user for more than 2 years. Surely, no need to mention the performance and storage boost, but that Ray was a beauty I must say (still using it).
Im from Bangladesh. Here Nexus are not that available and we cant order it through any carrier. I want to check the IMEI for originality for this device. Is there any sort of website can do that online? Hoping to have the best from this device. Currently the plan is to use it like OTB for 1 or some months, after that will need to unlock it and see its full potential ( atleast for Viper).

+1. No more blockage issue for me ever since I started doing this many months ago. Most games/apps should auto rotate accordingly.

Reminds me of one of the funniest threads of all time: http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...d-easy-fix-muffled-speaker-landscape-t2555496
I prefer my S2 Hercules to the S3. Lol My M8 had to get sent in for warranty repair and I was given an unrooted of course, S3 as a loaner. Was a brutal downgrade. Lol
My rooted S2 danced circles around the S3. So yes, going from an S3 to an N5 would be a great upgrade! Enjoy! ?
