Who will build the first rugged case? - Nexus 7 Accessories

I'm rough on my devices. They're usually in an OB, Gumdrop, or Ballistic case. W/ that said, who do you think will be the first to build a rugged case for the N7.
I had an OB Defender for my SGT 7.0 and it was perfect. (back when OB was still pumping out quality for Android devices).
Sure they add some bulk to a device but I need that bulk and protection.
Honestly I hope Gumdrop builds one for it also. Messaged them about it, but haven't heard anything. Have had their cases for the SGT 10.1's. Both the military and standard (had three 10.1's). Really no difference except color. W/ that said, I like theirs a little more than OB's designs.
Ballistic I'm torn about. They have great prices, but man oh man those corner...knobs....could really be trimmed down some. Looks like a 4 pocket pool table.
Maybe even Trident or Incipio will get in the game. Or possibly some unknown. All I know is, I look fwd to SOMEONE, ANYONE putting out a quality non folio case. (Not the folio or TPU type, b/c IMHO they offer very little protection.)

I'm actually all of these companies combined and I can tell you I'm making them simultaneously. I'll be charging a $560 pre-order price and you'll get it next year.

Sorry EmilVee but Fred Mucklethwaite of Warmington on Sea is already making them from old car tyres and superglue, plans to get them to market early next week. Shortly after that Mr Chan will be knocking out 5000 copies a day from a shed in his back garden in Shenzen.

BobjGear is on line for September availability.
I've got 3 of his super durable, super protective cases already for my Toshiba Thrive.
They add a bit of weight and bulk, but they're the best protection you'll find.

I just got my nexus 7 yesterday, but I'm also ready for a rugged case. I'm not rough on my devices. I'm actually the opposite. I baby them, but I like the extra piece of mind and assurance that a rugged case offers. I also prefer the feel and look of a rugged case on a device. I contacted gumdrop, ballistic and trident. They all said that they weren't working on a case for the nexus 7 right now. But I'm sure with the popularity of the nexus, that there will be plenty of cases before long.

I have a Seidio for my Atrix 4G, and am looking to get the same thing for the Nexus 7. The combination of soft and shell/hard case with the Seidio line has been my preference over Otterbox for some time.

Rugged Case

If I choose to get a case for my nexus, it will definitely be a rugged case. I like the idea of being protected if I drop it. And I like the look, style and feel of most rugged cases. Anyone know of any that will be available soon after launch? I really like gumdrop for the kindle fire. Also like trident, ballistic, Griffin etc...

I have been asking around with the manufacturers and have not gotten an answer yet. My first bets would be Seidio (Seidio Active Case) and then possibly Otterbox. Ballistic makes a good case but is sometimes a little late to the party. If I hear anything back I will update the thread.
Additionally something to think about... the Otterbox case for the Kindle Fire cost $54.99 on Amazon right now. That is a quarter the cost of the Nexus 7. I always use tough cases for my products however at this price point I am going for a screen protector and the Asus colored case. I use my tablet every day to keep flight publications with me. If I happen to drop it in a year or so I can just get another. With the expected sales numbers I bet they will be very easy to fond on craigslist in about a year.
Pelican case! Virtually indestructible.
Otter said "No?," Ballistic "Perhaps?"
I plan on using the N7 (if Google will ever actually get it to me) for some work in the field, so I need a rugged, semi-hardened case. The Gumdrop offerings seem "clunky," so they hold no appeal. Specifically interested in some analog to the Otterbox Defender, so I can use it without having to open "the lid."
Went ahead and contacted Otter, and this was the response I got from 'em:
Dear Ryan,
Unfortunately, we do not have plans to develop a case for that device at this moment in time. I would recommend keeping an eye on our website, as it will have the most up to date information for every new release. Please feel free to reply to this email if you have any additional questions.

Ballistic left it a little more open-ended:
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in our Ballistic cases. Unfortunately, we will not be producing a Ballistic case for the Nexus 7 at this time. However, I will forward your request to our Engineering and Design Team for future considerations. If we can assist you with anything further please feel free to contact us.

If anyone has any other ruggedized cases that they like, I sure would like to find out about 'em!!
Otterbox made a case for the Kindle Fire. Can anyone confirm it fits the N7?

I would doubt it, the Fire is a good 8mm shorter and a bit fatter.
Anyone know if there are any updates on a rugged case? Looking for a case so i can worry a little less about my 4 year old playing his games on it. The wife has the Otterbox Defender case for her EVO 4G LTE and it works well for him when he wants to play his games. Even a thick rubber case would be nice as well. Maybe with even thicker corners as well.
I emailed Trident Case. They said they don't have any plans for an N7 case atm.

Nexus 7 really needs a back case?

Its an accessories related question and i hope its ok to ask here. I just received my Nexus 7 32GB and loving it! As what i would do usually, I immediately started looking for back cases / covers / pouches for this lovely device and then I tought, does it really need one? The material at the back doesnt look like the one that could easily be scratched. But then I see so many cases around and people using them. Maybe to better protect the device when/if it falls? I dont like folio cases anyway and only buying a back case looks like a waste.
Any suggestions?

It can get scratched. I have mine in a case almost all the time and I found a scratch on mine somehow
While it's not essential, I'd still go with a case, because you just never know what may befall your new shiny tablet. Since a lot of cases on the market appear to be cheap and ugly, buy something that is well built and from quality materials. This may set you back $50 or more, but trust me, it's well worth it. The tablet will just feel better in your hand, more secure, and you won't have to worry about the screen being scratched or it getting dinged on the side.
Ever since I got my Norever leather case I like the way my N7 feels way more than it does without it.
If you're only interested in a "back case" then I would consider the Incipio Feather. Here's my review. The Feather did come with a screen protector, but I'm with the others in this thread and I would just go with a full case to protect the whole thing.
FULL DISCLOSURE: The Feather was provided to me by Incipio for the purpose of review. I do not receive any compensation for my reviews.
Protection required
I would have to agree that i enjoy having my nexus out of a case . I like the feel of the back and for me it would not get scratched as im careful.. But I use it while im out and about all the time.. I have almost dropped it a few times.I think if you drop this device and it hits the edge of bezel The screen will crack. So i recommend having a nice case . For me i have the bobjgear silicone case . It does add bulk and the nice look of the device . But it provices alot of protection.

I am thinking of a simple plain matte black slim tpu case. Let's see if I can find one.

Well, having dropped my N7 twice, I can attest to getting a case for the Nexus lol. Both drops were from at least 3 feet and the first one went down rolling to the sidewalk from my truck in my Treegloo case. The N7 came unscathed but the Treegloo had an indentation that could barely notice. The second fall was in the garage cement floor. This time the fall was straight down back side down and went SPLAT. I freaked!:silly: and immediately took it out and found it turned on fine and the glass was uncracked. So I went inside and put the N7 down but noticed the cover didn't sit flush like it normally did, so I took the N7 out of the case and saw the backing corners were coming undone and I had to press down to re-snap them back into the corners again.
Now the treelgoo has been semi-retired now that I have the Seidio Active case on. It works because I now also use the Kropsson Aero modded universal car mount and using the treegloo wouldn't work in that case.
Simply... Yes
as in the title yes, I have had a couple of small falls and one or two larger ones, and having the stock official ASUS ones may have saved it a lot of times, so getting any that will have some bump protection is a definite go ahead
call it insurance
I like the naked feel of the N7 in my hand. It's just right. The options available are all over the map. Those folding contraptions remind me of the old paper maps that I could never get right. The armored ones look like two handers and you are going to drop test it because it's a job just to handle all that bulk. I'm going with a leather YooMee pouch [correction: they call it a sleeve] for transport purposes and working the N7 raw.
Noticed Otterbox just announced the Defender series for the N7.
I like Otterbox but $70 is too expensive for a plastic case. Hell, you get a hand made leather Noreve case for $72.

I think this would be good. I am not too worried about dropping it but more want to protect it from scratches. A nice leather pouch is what I need. Thanks! Off to eBay

I only use a case outside of my house, otherwise for reading and such I go caseless. I have carpet everywhere and even with a couple drops it's not damaged. It's pretty solid.

You're right about that. I figure once things settle down they'll run in the $50 neighborhood. Still, as much as I love Otterbox, I'm afraid it will add too much bulk and that's entirely too much for a stand.
I've had all sorts of adventures with my nexus 7, and to be honest back plate is as good as new, the silver border however is a different story.
I went with a Cruzerlite TPU case $19 doesn't add any bulk really comes in all colors with cool design on the back (they are the androids)

Bought 4 Cases (Seidio, Body Glove, Ballistics, Boxwave): Here is my 8 cents!

Hello everyone,
Ive been looking through this accessory thread ever since I owned my note 2 trying desperately to get rid of the crappy Body Glove case I was "borrowing" from Tmobile. Well, my three other cases came today, and after testing them all, I will tell you what I settled with.
First things first:
The Body Glove: I don't have any pictures of this crappy case, but you don't need any. Apparently I found out today after returning my version of the BG that they have OTHER styles which are far superior then the one that I had. But probably still pretty bad. This is the beginners case that you settle on if you have no idea how to surf the WWW. Obviously if you are reading this, you would never settle for this case, especially at the outrageous $30+ price tag.
Now for the 3 puppies that arrived today. I purchased these all on amazon.com.
The Seidio Active Case:
My initial thoughts are that this would be the case I would be settling with, especially after the youtube reviews... But after putting it on, and upon comparison, I realized that this case offers minimal protection as far as a drop would be concerned. It feels extremely cheap with the white plastic, and I had no idea that this is what I was purchasing. Not only that, but it has the same issue as the body glove - Slippery bastard. Sure the sides are rubber, but its an extremely soft smooth rubber that doesnt "Stick" if you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong, this is a pretty nice looking case, and I like the kickstand...but it's not for me. They also have other very vivid colors. As far as price goes, this case is a rip off at $30.35. Almost as bad as the body glove, but slightly cheaper and prettier.
The Ballistics Case:
This is the case that I read reviews about and heard is supposed to offer some of the best protection outside of Otterbox Defender case. Not to mention it looks good. Well, I opened this bad boy up, and noticed a few things right away. The rubber shell is not snug at all. When you snap on the plastic, it gets a little more snug, but I guarantee this case will fall apart everytime you drop your phone. This already had me worried. Another issue is the damn sides of the case. ITS CHEAP 100% SLIP-GUARANTEE Plastic! Damnit. I had really high hopes for this case.
If this doesn't already kill all your hopes and dreams, it makes your phone much more gargantuan. However, I digress, when it comes to drop protection, even though you'll be picking up the two pieces of your case + your phone, I would feel confident that the majority of impact from the initial drop would be absorbed into this case, before it falls apart. Price to protection value is decent at $23 dollars. Note that this case is cheaper now at $19 which increases the appeal of this case if you have a decent grip of your phone at all times.
The final case is the Boxwave OA3 Resolute:
So check this out, I only found this case on accident thanks to Slickdeals.net. I read reviews about boxwave's case for other phones such as the SIII, and I was prepared to be disappointed with this case. But alas, none of those previous problems exist and ironically, I am keeping this case even though its MUCH cheaper than all the other cases I've tried. This case almost looks identical in design to the Ballistics, which is what I think the company was going for. However, it is only one piece of hardened rubber. It fits very snug, and feels great in the hand. It doesn't make the phone as huge as the ballistics case, and I still feel confident that this case will offer a decent amount of drop protection. Another bonus is that it has a kickstand... but don't count on it for very long, because its the cheapest feeling kickstand you'll probably ever see in your life. I can almost bet money that it'll break with regular usage. So enjoy it while it lasts. You definitely cannot beat this case for the price as it was only $10.00 total. Not to mention its all black, no cheap looking white plastic.
I have attached all the photos I took. Sorry I don't have photos of the case on the phone, as I had taken the pictures with the note 2
Hope you found this post helpful.

Thanks for for the pictures. I personally am still waiting on the seidio convert case for the extended battery, I enjoyed the one I had on my thunderbolt. The case I have on my note 2 is the $12 (now $8.95) rugged case from ebay. The case uses the same style of synthetic rubber that the seido case uses and prevents me from dropping the phone. What are you going to do with those left over cases?
Good review, and I do agree with you on every point. While waiting for my UAG case, I'm using right now $7 ebay case (first one in my review link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36730711&highlight=rugged+dual+layer#post36730711) - which is a copy of Seidio Active and also similar to Otterbox Commuter. Commuter has a higher quality inner rubber lining, without a doubt. But Active is exactly the same stuff, or I should say that ebay cheap knockoff is exactly the same design and quality as Active
Btw, the Boxwave one you can get from ebay shipped for about $7. Its not their original design, just a generic ebay case they purchase in bulk from China and sell conveniently for local us shippment.
Thanks for the compliments. I am returning the other cases to amazon for free since I said that they are faulty, lol.
Useful review but I disagree on the ballistics case after going through other reviews and more than enough websites I found the ballistics case was the indeed the case which had the protection. The box said 8-9ft drop so I tested it with a leap faith and the case phone stayed together with no damage and didn't come apart. Also you say slippery wrong again I can apply minimum pressure using my little finger and thumb dry and wet with no slippage. The case is made from decent materials not the stuff you would get from a 5 dollar case which I have been through several. The case offers better screen protection from laying flat on a surface screen down than any case with the added corner protection. The back is non slip also and makes good resting on a slanted surface say a car roof, bonnet or dash board. And with a year warrantee you can't get far wrong. In general its makes the whole overall grip better and nice to the touch. Feels very manly to and with a simplistic look. With the plastic support the case holds firmly all round the note. Down side only two colours black and white, little flimsy top and bottom of screen. Price is fair for the case was 22.99 off eBay stores, cheaper if you get a deal on it.
Amazon gives a 4.5/5 overall for 33 reviews that's pretty good like.

Otterbox Commuter Type N7 Case, Siedio?

So the Otterbox Defender looks like overkill, is the Siedio Active the N7 case most similar to the OB Commuter series? Is there anything else along these lines, that will offer more protection than a slim tpu/silicone backing but not so thick as the Defender?
Thanks...

The only thing that put me off the Defender for the N7 was the price, I bought the Seido Active and it really is excellent. That said I got a Defender for my phone because it was cheaper and I'd read bad reports about the active holster clip on the Seido for phones.

Thx. I am leaning towards Seidio. But with gen2 N7 coming in July, do I want to spend even $35 more on a case that I'll be using only for May and June? A lot of cases work for WiFi and not 3g of current N7, so I'd be surprised if those same cases fit the Gen2.
Other thing is before my last N7 shattered and I decided I needed a shell case, I already had this nice $40 Rickshaw custom sleeve in the mail. So I might just get a $10 Amzer or KaysCase TPU which I think will fit in the sleeve.
And then maybe a Seidio or Otterbox for the Gen2 Nexus...

Update, got the Seidio Active w/ Cover, love it. Otterbox Defender would have been too large for me, but I actually like the form factor w/ the Seidio installed.
Doesn't add *too* much bulk, it's abt 3/4" - 20mm thick with the case, but it's not noticeably too much wider, still comfortable to hold in one hand, avg sized hands anyway. And most importantly it gives the N7 a much sturdier feel, so I can have peace of mind when out and about.
I like the design, got the Royal Blue skeleton. Quality build and materials, not cheap-looking like some of the TPU cases, but still affordable at $35 (for the black)-$45 from Amazon w/ free prime shipping. Easy to install. Cutouts are good.
And the kickstand is pretty awesome. I like how the cover can snap on the back, in case maybe you're in a rush and don't have time to put it in your bag.
Very happy with this case. I hope it fits the gen2 N7, but if form factor changes I'd buy a new one anyway.

Anyone using Seidio Case? Questions.

I have some questions about the Seidio Cases. Just need some clarification
1) For Surface or Dilex cases, can both cases evenly lay dead flat on table? According to the images on the company website, it cannot cuz of the kickstand is sticking out at the back; so it wobbles on the table.
2) For Surface, Dilex, and Dilex Kryptek, hows the hand feel? Smooth / silicon glossy, rubbery, or Matte? Can't tell from the company photos.
3) Whitestone friendly? which model?
Its a expensive case but i heard good reviews about and about to pull the trigger. Thanks a reply.
I haven't had a Seidio case since the og HTC Evo. The design has changed a bit since then, but from what I remember, the black had a nice matte finish, the other colors had a semi gloss sheen to them. I wasn't a fan of the cutouts for the power and volume buttons as they were a bit too recessed. I saw the new executive case online and was tempted to check it out, but for the price (and grip) I've opted to stick with my Speck Presidio Grip case instead (they run for about $30 on Amazon right now).
The Seido holdster is my favorite.. Used the 2 part case for Note 4 & 5 but stopped when I found a thin bumper case that came off / easier. Case worked even for my motorcycle Seido model mount... But at $36 for combo not happy.. Went through 4 or 5 holsters over the years
Theres another thread on here with reports about the Note 8 Seidio cases and its not good news. I have the dilex version and not a fan. Its OK and I'll live with it, just not as happy with it as I've been with them over the years. I am a Seidio fan for life and been using Seidio cases since the OG Evo.
I had a Seidio case with My HTC EVO 4G and ever since that phone I have used samsung phones and found that I like the Zero Lemon products better until now, That massive battery case for the note 8 from Zero Lemon is ugly as it can get but I want the battery capacity it has.
