XDA rule 12:
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
As an addition, developers have the right to hold exclusivity over their work for as long as it is deemed necessary by the dev or freely share it. However, if the work is claimed as exclusive, it must remain as such. No selective sharing will be allowed (ie allowing certain people to use it and not others). Should the dev decide to start sharing the work with others, the work automatically becomes fair game for all to use.
In regards to permissions, same rules remain for this but if permission was already given, unless there is a very valid reason, it cannot be revoked (same applies to major updates on the work). Under that same premise, permissions cannot be denied unless the work is exclusive or under severe circumstances.
In plain English: If you want to keep your work exclusive, go for it. However, if you are going to share your work, do it fairly.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA (including but not limited to ROMs, RUUs, apps, games, kernels, themes, icons, etc) unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.

Ummm maybe because rootz doesn't have guidelines for posting... as for what you and the other guy said: I may have messed up the rule, but if you plan to bring something out, wait till it's actually out before you write a post saying " here it is" in the main post then under it saying "coming soon" that's misleading and hence why you get angry messages... Its like saying there is a ps3 here for free! Then saying well maybe tonight it'll be free. Of course you'll get backlash that's just common sense. Might I suggest that if you want to do this in the future put "coming soon" in the post title.
Now on to your direct download question. You should know by now that there are direct downloading (hosting sites) that allow you to have a list of several different files under 1 direct downloading page. IE 1 link then click on the file you want then instant download. No need for ftps or other miscellaneous things. And now for the several posts you have: that's what a developed does if they want to get stuff out to the masses. I've done much MUCH more than 27 threads in separate forums for much more popular things than android. Like for instance back in the old days when you had to El patches that were 150mb for counter-strike 7.5 beta.... aaahhh good old days.....

I was not being ride for christ sake! I simply asked if I was missing something. A second post saying coming implies something else is coming, not the rom that u said was here. If u doing like people asking where a rom that u said was here is, then don't post that its here. That seems pretty simple.

I know its free work, I'm not complaining about the work (mostly because there is no work done yet, and I haven't tried it out), All I'm saying is that there are rules and I thought that one of them was no 3rd party dl link; meaning no one can say "here's the download" then take someone to a 3rd party site so that you have to click on additional links for the download. That's both misleading & under-minded.
Same thing I was complaining about with his "here is a new rom" then right under it there was an additional post stating "well.... coming soonish...." If you don't mislead people you won't get 1/2 as many angry posters as there normally are when this kind of crap happens. Read rules & don't mislead people, that's all Im saying.

Linking to downloads that REQUIRE REGISTRATION is against the rules. Direct downloads (or nearly direct, in this case) are not.
XDA doesn't host large files like roms. How would any dev post anything without an external site?? How, exactly, do you classify MediaFire, et al.?
If you have a question about said rules or think someone is breaking them, how about PMing someone who knows them (read: moderator) before pissing off a major developer.
r2, I'll implore you to stick around. Please, PM me if you need anything. I also mod in TB if you run into this kind of junk over there.

thank you, but its been building for a while. there were 5 pages on rootz before i got a build up, 5 pages of discussion and friendly FAQ. even after the builds got messed up, not a single person got rude.
it hasnt just been here, though the guys here are what finally pushed me over the line. ive been dealing with this quite a lot here, and have been slowing down my post rate for a while. Maybe if xda can clean it act up ill be back, but i dont see it happening in the forseeable future.

Thanks for the clearification; but I wasn't referring to "3rd party websites" as sites like megaupload, megashare, etc, etc. I should of phrased it differently, what I should have used was "personal websites" because most of them usually require some kind of login. In this case no; so thanks again for clarifying.
As for pissing off the dev, that's a 2 edged sword, as I get why other people besides me are angry. It really is misleading to have a post in a section dedicated to ROM development/release and tell everyone "here it is" then post again saying coming soon. I don't really mind if it is coming soon, but it would have been nice to have him put something like "Coming soon" in the post title. Droid X doesn't have much development on XDA at all anymore. And since this is the second of 2 in the last month (and 1 rom before that in the last like 5) people are bound to freak out! Then to see something like what happened here, that will quickly turn into something like "wtf is this?"
We both had problems and now both problems are out in the open. We can both learn from it.

[Q] What do you think of selling root guides?

I saw a few root guides for sale on eBay. So, was wondering, is it a good idea? Is it legal?
What do you think devs? If I sell them, am I abusing your work?
Oh wow ... another Sri Lankan ... cool (I am one as well). I don't know about legality as the instructions on how to root phones are pretty much in the public domain. Then again it could be illegal if they are selling instructions/procedures/techniques which were developed by the developers on our fine and industrious forum.
My advice to you personally if you are thinking of selling a manual of sorts on rooting a certain phone, make sure you get permission from those who's work you will be referencing as well as make a sweet royalties deal with them so they can profit as well. But then again if you have come up with your own way of rooting that has not been mentioned here or anywhere, then you have all the right to publish your work and reap the rewards.
That's my 2 cents at least.

Well, thanks for the answer.
There is nothing illegal in selling public domain software. GNU allows you to resell stuff as long as you provide a link to source. I'm wondering about the legality of helping people root the phone and helping them remove restraints placed by the carrier. Like for example portable hotspot. As for the devs, I'm wondering about the morality of doing this.
And, yes I'm a Sri Lankan living in Sri Lanka. =)
I think it's legal. I'm seeing a lot of cellphone shops that does these things.

Depends on what you are doing. From what I understand, GPL licences can't be used commercially. Since XDA falls under GPL licensing...
On the other hand, if you came up with the guide and resources on your own entirely, you may have a claim on the content.
As for rooting guides, I suppose that if you have printed it out and have organized the guide well, it could be worth something. But the resources contained within must be from your own making (ie, the ROMs, the root method, etc.)
So, I don't think that rooting guides should be paid for.
On the other hand, you may charge someone for rooting services.

Well, the GPL allows you to monetize as long as you make the buyer aware that it comes with GPL.
I'd like to perform rooting services but it would be a bit hard to find people in my locality.

Bootloader unlock campaign

This might be the wrong section, but this is the section in which tis will get the most visibility
(mods can move if if they feel otherwise)
A forum thread over at XDA-Developers has started Operaition: Make Ourselves Heard (a.k.a. #OPMOSH), which calls for a onslaught on all possible channels - FCC complaints, emails to Motorola Mobility's leaders, Twitter and Facebook and an online petition too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419815
Motorola’s announcement last year that bootloaders would be unlocked on their devices sometime during the second half of 2011.
Well, if you haven’t noticed, 2011 has officially come and gone and there hasn’t been a single announcement or acknowledgement from Motorola regarding the issue. It’s this silence that has Motorola customers in such an uproar. If you find yourself in this camp, grab your pitchfork sign the online petition and head on over to the thread where they’ll have all the info you need to help make your voice heard.

I Searched the atrix forum for "bootlocker unlock campaign" and all i got was an AT&T specific one dated march.
As i said the mods can move this thread if they want and you're free to report it. Its just that the Rom development section gets the most traffic and the more people that read about the campaign the better.
And the Thread mentioned in the OP is in the RAZR forum, not here. just making sure people know about it.
OK listen I'm gonna start posting random **** in whatever place I want because I.want people to read it. What? That's retarded? I know, but I just want people to read my junk!

With all due respect, the Atrix bootloader has already been unlocked.

People on XDA are such assholes, let the guy say what he wanted to and if the MODS seem that it doesn't belong THEY will take action so shut up.

Thank you sir. you're really contributing in maintaining the quality of this forum =)
Didn't anybody read the first post.there is a report button RIGHT NEXT TO IT
But no, we have to fill every thread with our wise ass comments .
The atrix bootloader is unlocked but not officially. we have plenty of people Bricking their phones with the method we have.
And if you want this thread to be move please REPORT it.Dont keep posting rants
this thread should be about campaigning Motorola to start releasing ICS for Atrix, not to unlock bootloader, since we have the bootloader unlocked long time ago.
Now while I understand how you feel. First XDA doesn't condone spamming anyone. The petition is enough. Second there is already a thread about this in general section. No need for another one.

can developer steal a rom from another developer?

just a subj... is it possible the some developer just take a rom which weas made by someone else and announce as his one achivement? (sulerly, some minor ganages could be done in the rom)
how to identify the thief?

It's not really stealing i guess as long as you put out credits of the people who created it, or by asking permission from the developers.

if the "owner" has not been aware about any usage of his rom, is it faire to thread the rom? "credits" are given when a team were worked out the rom, or when you take the result of someone's job and just say "hey, i take it" ?
in my opinion, it is situational and depends on the context.
A =/= B =/= C
But they could share similarities that most people would agree something was done morally wrong. I guess you could share with us the situation then we can give a better opinion?

i just wondering is there a sort of "widly known gentelmen agreement" about such situations. and the second matter is to get an idea how both parties (both developers) can get "a profitable solution" for both (= peace)
In my opinion, the developers community should be honest for it members. And other users have to proud for the achievments of this community. All team's results would be better, than results of each developer. That's why they should be together ^.^
PS sorry for bad english, I hope you understand my meaning

all should be together with all ... sounds impossible
the problem is HOW can others results be used for making app / rom etc?
what is allowed to do and what is forbidden (ethically)?

To work together - allowed, to use with proper credits - allowed. To edit build.prop and post as own rom - not. I think so.

If you suspect something, you can always go and compare files.
Technically you can do whatever you want since android is open source.
Ethically it isbetter to consult with rom owners about using parts of a rom and credit them offcourse

if someone did not done it (consult) before he take a part of rom, what will happen? does it mean that othe other community will declare a boycott against him? or just say "you'd better stop doing it"?
Of course you're all talking about the Rom owners, Google... Right? Or perhaps HTC? I would be very surprised if any Rom posted in our dev thread have asked Linus Torvalds personally if they could post a derivation of his operating system here.
You don't see too many credits to those 3 either...
It's public domain, nobody here has built a Rom entirely from scratch all have borrowed from the community and the source, and if they offer even one piece of code that's new, I say good on them, they are contributing to the community, and the community will take from and build on that too.
But let's cut to the chase, why are you asking the question? You're planning to contribute? Or are you here to point the finger at someone for stealing your creation?

Like everyone has stated, being a open source code and that no one in here is making profit from the roms, (on this site at least i can not speak for the world) it is really a null point of theft everything is free you can not steal something that is owned by the public. As well if you plan on taking something from a rom I would strongly suggest that you ask, and give proper credit were it is due. personally if i worked on a project and someone was using my development with no permission or credit i would publicly humiliate them in anyway possible so that the ass who "stole"
my work would never be able to call it his own again. As well the XDA community is great group of people who if you steal anything from another rom with no permission will find out and ostracize you for your pathetic attempt to pass of someone else's blood sweat and tears as your own.

Cataclysm

Folks - I've read great things about the Cataclyst ROM but found the official thread on it had been closed by an XDA moderator. If I install it and run into issues, would there be some people supporting it and what thread?
Thx

I don't want to sound like a douche... But re-read my last post.
*IF* he's releasing still, it's not on XDA and directing people via post to anywhere off-site is at least frowned upon (if not prohibited).

Maybe we should let @atl4ntis know that we love to see him back in whatever XDA thread or XDA (sub)forum. Not only for his work, but also because he is a helpfull and nice person.
Possibly his XDA account is still active.
We could mention him in our posts so he knows we do not forget. At this moment we have to respect his decision because he is hurt.

The mention might work unless like most of the more senior members he has mention notifications turned off.
Can anybody please tell me what happened?
His rom is perfect as it's stock with just enough amount of customization.
Sad that he left.

As I understand it there was a dispute with another dev and that lead to a dispute about whether or not his rom was original work. XDA moved it to the non original section and he decided to abandon the project.

Here in the Netherlands @atl4ntis was popular. The Dutch press praised him for his 'cataclysm mod'.
The bulk of the problem was that he claimed his work was all original, yet refused to provide evidence to back his claims. Before anyone starts in on the "Apache license doesn't require sources" line, I know he was within his rights to refuse to show his sources. However, if you don't show sources, how can you reasonably expect anyone to believe your work is original?
The XDA staff made the right call here. If you refuse to prove your work is original, your work doesn't get to be located in the Original Android Development forum. In any event, this will be a moot point going forward as all new devices will only have one development section. That said, the mods and/or admin should be going through all device forums that have both an Android Development and Original Android Development subforum, and merging the two subforums into one.
