[Q] Cyanogen + Iodak + Trickster MOD - LG Optimus 4X HD

Hi guys,
I am not new to using custom ROMs but I would like to understand a bit more about optimizing my beautiful phone to my needs.
I am running the latest stable CM and just today flashed Iodak kernel 0.7
I understand with using Trickster MOD I can do a lot tweaking - but I don't understand most of what I can do there and whether it would actually make things "better" for me.
Here's my request:
Can you tell me how I should set parameters in Trickster and explain at least in short why?
I do not game on my phone, I use it mostly for social interaction and navigation, therefore I suppose I don't need max power, I am rather interested in good battery times while not loosing the smoothness of use.
Thanks in advance.

Your needs is same as mine...What ive done using trickster mod is changed Governor/Scheduler..On SmartDimmer, Disable FSync, Undervolt all frequency...As undervolting values varies with your usage...As mine, i lower down most of the freq above 1000Mhz and below that freq, i undervolt as medium value as i can, to be exact, 25mv each...
As Governor, read up about each governor behavior and find the one that most suited you, same as Scheduler...
I'd prefer Interactive+Sio...Hope this helps

True, but the description was "general chat, tips & tricks, etc" and I thought that pretty much hit it.
Sorry if I thought wrongly.

FAQs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11436660&postcount=11 (Thanks Alienz!)
Yes, the kernel is still based on the i9000 JPX source release. Hopefully we get real source soon.
Main Features:
NEAR STOCK BATTERY!!! (Thanks Morfic!)
Overclock up to 1.4Ghz.
BLN (Backlight Notifications).. A basic app is included to turn it on if you want it
Voodoo lagfix v5
Voodoo Sound v4
Many parts of the "speedmod" patch from the i9000 forum
OC is based on raspdep's OC patches, also from the i9000 forum
Various speed tweaks
CIFS/SMB and NFS support compiled in (no modules)
Tunnel support compiled in (no modules)
Changes since 3.2:
New boot logo. (Thanks Alexia!)
Added battery drain fix in standby discovered by Morfic. Should be about the same battery as stock now.
Voltages and frequency scaling have been adjusted to more quickly jump to higher frequencies and come down slower. Improves response time while you use the phone.
The Voltage Control app has the correct voltages, I recommend leaving the lower speeds alone to start with. Going too low can cause the sleep of death. That's why they are as high as they are. NOTE: The voltage control app does not control the available states they way the older ones do. That screen is useless, ignore it. Set your max and scheduler if you wish, and the voltages if you want to change them.
SetCPU.... If you want to use it, you can have it set min/max. If you set profiles, don't set the max under 800. The phone needs 800 to be available. I use a screen off profile at 100-800 just to keep the OC disabled while sleeping. No reason it should need to really crank up the speed if I'm not looking at it. SetCPU is NOT required, I'm offering this as a tip for fans of that application.
The kernel has proven stable for a number of testers so far. If you get crashes, disable any OC/UV settings and try again. I recommend you only change one setting at a time, and NOT set at boot until you have run for a while to ensure you can run stable at that voltage/speed.
Great job testing it out now. Edit: screen is a little dark but the kernel is super smooth

I am considering flashing this new kernel but have a couple of questions I would like to ask first. I am currently on Bionix V 1.21 and love it. Is this kernel compatible with Bionix V 1.21? It appears that this kernel is Voodoo enabled so I presume I would not have to disable voodoo. If I decide to go back to the Kb1 with voodoo enabled which I believe is the stock kernel for Bionix V 1.21 would i just flash the kernel( is is available on TW forum?)or would I have to flash the whole rom again? I would think I would not have to but want to be sure before I leap. I would not like to have to ask for help for problems that could have been avoided by reading and asking questions. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Is it ok to not use set cpu? Will this kernel will oc over 1000?

Thanks for not clogging up the forums. It is compatible with Bionix 1.2.1, that's what I developed it on.
If you have the red voodoo recovery, there is no need to disable voodoo for flashing. Generally speaking, kernels can be flashed without disabling voodoo in any case.
This is what iv'e done, I've lowered my Volts on some clocks, 1000 and up, and I was wondering should/can I use setcpu for profiles?
Answers to COMMON questions:
1. Can I flash this over Voodoo or RFS (stock)
You do NOT need to disable Voodoo. Flash right over Voodoo or RFS kernels. Make sure you are not running JFS though. JFS is not supported
2. How is stability? Does it crash? Sleep of death? etc?
Stability on this is AMAZING. It will not crash unless you overclock/undervolt and your settings are unstable. If that is the case, you know its your settings.
3. Do I need SetCPU to overclock?
You do not need to use SetCPU (You can if you want to). Use the Voltage Control App to overclock.
4. How do I overclock? Can I use this without an overclock?
By default, the kernel will boot to 1.0Ghz. To OVERCLOCk to 1.4Ghz (or lower) you need to use the app that this kernel installs during the flash. The app is called "Voltage Controll" and can be found in your app drawer after the flash
5. What is the battery life?
Battery life should be close to stock now. The battery drain issue that was present in the I9000-based kernels earlier has been solved.
6. Does this support BLN (Back-light-notificaations)?
Yes. You need the BLN control app from the market to use it.
7. How do I use Voodoo sound? What is it?
Voodoo sound is a vast improvement to the sound quality of your phone. To use it, download the Voodoo Control app from the Market.
8. What ROMs is this compatible with?
This is compatible with ALL Vibrant Froyo ROMS. This means 2.2 ROMS made for the Vibrant. 2.2.1 is not yet tested but should theoretically work.
I hope this helps.

You can use setcpu for profiles, just keep 800Mhz available. The phone will likely crash if you don't. I set a screen off profile of 100-800 to keep the oc disabled when I don't need it, as 800 is a lower voltage.
Hint with voltages, try to keep 1000 and higher at the SAME voltage. Changing the voltage too often can cause instability as the voltage regulator doesn't adjust as fast as we would like sometimes. OC makes this worse as you need a higher voltage to maintain a stable CPU at the higher frequency. The kernel is set to jump to 1000, then to the max set clock speed. Setting 1000 to the higher voltage gives us some extra time to stabilize the new voltage before the just into the OC speeds.

just flashed this..
and a few questions ive never used OC before..
What does VOODOO Sound really do?
I set my thing on SetCPU as 1.4ghz as max and .1 as low with conservative.
then a profile with screen off and on conservative.
will those save battery?

SetCPU by itself will NOT overclock. You need to use the Voltage app that comes with the kernel. See my above post with the Common questions.
I'd like any of the kernels developers gave me a clue about an issue im having with all custom i9000 based kernels (eugene's and TW's). The problem is with line2 voip app which calls isn't heard in the other end when running these kernels, but in stock/voodoo it works just fine. Please any of you have an idea of what could be going wrong?
thanks.
Okay tested so far, everything is working good (undervolted to about 175 for lower clocks 100-1000 and 75 for higher clocked 1200-1400)
Don't try this, as every phone can't handle some things, i'm just stating.
EDIT: I'm seriously stupid, how do I remove the settings again? I know it's in system/ something
Edit: NEVERMIND fixed
I've never used an OC kernel, was thinking of giving it a try. If I decide its not for me is this like removing a voodoo injected kernel, disable, then flash a diff kernel then delete files?

OnDemand, Conservative or SmartassV2 are a good compromise regarding speed and battery. Your battery will discharge a bit faster ofc but your phone will be smoother as well. Use CoolTool for live statistics of the CPU frequency.
Just play around a bit with the settings and use the link I posted above for help. If you want to know anything, feel free to ask me
There are several other settings on kernel side which affect speed and battery life.

Thank you so much!!! I'm gonna be honest and say I am a n00b and I won't really understand the statistics...or change the frequency manually...
Can I run SetCPU with all the kernels or just use the Kernel's governors (like Devil's let you choose a governor).
P.S - Tried the SmartassV2 looks okay to me a bit laggy though...

Yeah, SetCPU can be run with any kernel. You can download the devil kernel app on Google Play to set everything, so SetCPU is redundant.
Statistics are quite obvious - the phone should hit min. frequency as soon as possible on the one hand and it shouldn't lagg on the other hand Lazy governor is good as well.
Btw: You are here to learn something so it's absolutely okay if you ask questions. That "noob-excuse" is kinda lame cuz you read and study the stuff by asking others /reading topics Everyone has to learn to succeed.
Anyways, ask me if you got questions

No, you need a custom kernel for UV/OC/UC so setcpu or other similar apps are of no use to you.

Agreed, except you will be able to profile using stock governors and I/o schedulers if you are rooted, you will also be able to set a lower max or higher min process speed if you should choose. I have not used setCpu yet although I have it installed, annoyingly it keeps requesting su even tho I'm not using it :/

True, you can set stock governers, but when it comes setting cpu speeds you will only be able to set stock speeds. Since the stock speeds are all aready availabe you will only be able to increase the lowest speed and decrease the max speed which is not what he wants to do, and IMHO no something to bother doing anyway.
Indeed, and thats what I said
However I would disagree that it's pointless - you could (for example) set profiles for when battery >40% max cpu = 1G - this would slightly increase remaining battery life - you can also set temperature based profiles and even profiles for specific apps.
But in truth, most of these are rather redundant given that the T already has battery saver/thermal throttling and decent enough processor to cope with heavy load - still, will be very useful once we get a few more custom kernels to play with (eagerly awaits the arrival of DOOOOOOM!!!)

I tried SetCPU when I was rooted on 303 firmware.
It worked ok for about half a day and then locked in a CPU mode and hammered my battery until the phone went flat. The phone was pretty hot when I noticed and picked it up.
Might be a one-off but worth keeping look out for if you are using with a LB like I was.
If I helped hit thanks!

[Q] Best Galaxy Ace Overclock Frequancy... And something else thanks

Hey guys
I know their probably another thread out there with this in it but... Yeah. But go ahead troll me lol, im still a bit of a noob.:silly:
Anyways, i have a Galaxy Ace s5830. I have Beats with smooth sense ROM. I had it upto 883MHz Yesterday but after i turned it off then back on ROM Toolbox reverted it to 806MHZ. 883MHz seemed a lot faster even though some people get theirs close to 1GHZ
My phone afterwards rebooting had issues such as the phone becoming un-responsive when i was even doing nothing (maybe the overclock to 883MHz had some short term effect?) But the phone seemed fine after safely turning it off then back on several times. Still works perfectly i got scared when it started to become un-responsive. But it works well now i have also used pimp my ROM, and the scripts work like a charm. Especially the call quality one (it uses bravia engine or something?). But with pimp my ROM wi-fi and network tweaks it completely broke wi-fi saying wi-fi connecting... Then saying under the network name 'Error'. Dam it took so long to get the IP address then said error like i said lol
At the frequency 883MHZ the phone seemed stable and faster than ever before, i did change it in small increments
So just wondering, what is the safe and most reliable frequencies to set it at? I currently use 225Min and 806 Max. With the userspace governer.
I know the terms of ' Safe ' and overclock don't mix (sorta like water and my dads S2 :crying: ).
Im also considering buying a 2450MAH battery from ebay for about 5.99 AUD. Any suggestions on should it be okay and better? But i mainly would like to knwo about the overclcoking lol.
So yeah, basically what is a good frequency to set it at? Is 883MHZ okay? Am i going to fry it out or completely brick or damage the phone or cpu if i set it at 883MHZ? Would love to buy a new phone but i need to save im only 14
So yeah please help me and you could help others too. Please be welcomed to troll me
I plan on having this phone another 3-4 Months before i consider buying the S2 or Galaxy note when their cheap (like really cheap)...
Like i said please help, and feel welcomed to troll me when you do help :highfive:
Man i feel like a Rebel when i overclock

Right now I am just using the stock one. I personally wouldn't change my battery to anything other than stock, but people have reported that 1500mAh or 1600mAh work well. I wouldn't use anything that has a higher capacity than that though. Also, if it's very inexpensive it's probably not real.
Clocking actually goes on the rom. I've seen people having OC over 1gHz & still stable with the mad kernel but I gave up clocking as I didn't see much of a difference & also underclocking started giving me FCs on some heavy apps while it was all fair in the unclocked state. And again, there's no such thing as a best frequency. You find your own values. What works well for him might mess up your phone rebooting all by itself. Stock batteries are always fine & they also keep you under warranty. Anyone ever wondered why the phone manufacturers didn't implement clocking as a part of it ? Stability is the word. I've seen here, I've seen there. East or west, stock is the best ! Try keeping as close to stock as possible, just to have that extra touch of safety & stability

Hello all.
I was reading this thread and became interested in overclocking. In my case my device is:
Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830L (labeled as GT-S5830 by CyanogenMod)
CyanogenMod-7.2.0-cooper stable (Android version 2.3.7)
Kernel 2.6.35.7-perf-CL882825 ([email protected] #21)
I was checking in CM settings -> Performance -> CPU settings that I could adjust min and max clockspeed, but in max frequency the maximum one is the same processor's speed, 800 MHz. So my kernel doesn't support overclocking.
After a search in the forums I found there are plenty of custom kernels for this legacy device. But I'm relatively new to the kernel world, so I wanted to ask you for advise. What custom kernel could I try for my device for overclocking? Or King Android, what custom kernel are you using?
It'd the first time I do the overclocking stuff, I'd like to try it to see if some higher quality mp4 videos (which are run by MX Player only in software acceleration) can run better, as well as some games and emulators.
I'm also kind of a noob as you can see. If you want to troll/scold me...
Thank you all.

Hi you can try FireKernel or BlackHawk kernel. Use the search function to find them easily. Both supports Overclocking and are made for CM7. [MAKE SURE THEY SUPPORT YOUR S5830L]
At the moment I'm with Democracy ROM which is based on unofficial CM7 and I don't really feel the need of overclocking. It is all smooth with firekernel at
Min 245
Max 806
Governor smartassv2
Sent from my... oh wait, who cares?
I did my search.
Maybe I forgot to mention I haven't installed a custom kernel before... Does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I already mentioned what CM7 I have installed. It's the "official" stable one.
Would OCing help to improve videos and games performance? i.e, faster, no lag...
You can set it to whatever your phone can handle. Mine can't go past 844Mhz otherwise apps start force closing and such. If your phone is completely stable at 883Mhz then you're good.
As for the battery, no. It's a fake. Buy a 1500mAh like I did. Works like a charm and it brought 3. Lasts a little longer and it's really amazing. Had it for a while now. Still have one in the pack, only been using 2 when I don't get to charge my phone. Really handy.

OCing helps the phone over all. But remember, without much free ram, OC won't really change much. You need a balance of ram and CPU. Like me, I use swap and OC to 844Mhz. Even if it's a low OC, it's still better than nothing.
1. @SuperAce609: I have 104 Mb free RAM out of 278 Mb total RAM. Mine is Galaxy Ace S5830L with CM 7.2. Would OC work for me? Up to what frequency?
And how can you have 600 Mb of RAM? Is your device really an Ace?
2. There's still a doubt I haven't been able to find out myself: does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I was suggested FireKernel or BlackHawk ones...
Any help?

1.- Every Ace is diferent..some Ace's can go up to 960 Mhz while other just 844 Mhz, the thing is: try it yourself overclocking in small jumps. Swap is a small amount of memory of your SD card, that Android use it like if where RAM, but decreases SD card life...
2.- Some Kernel came Built in on Some particullary ROM's but generally cames on a CWM Flashable zip; FireKernel & BlackHawk are specially for CM7; In my opinion FireKernel is the best... And there are others like Battery Extender Kernel or NimsKernel but these Kernel are only for Stock ROM's...
I hope you find useful my info...
Thank you, Blake2893.
Then there's just 2 doubts left, if you don't mind.
There's a fair number of custom CM7.2 roms with FireKernel in the developer forum. Is there one you or someone else could say is the best in terms of stability and least number of bugs? Or is that something I should test myself in the S5830L?
The Ace S5830/S5830L has 278 Mb total RAM by default. If I understand well, you're implying I could modify SWAP partition in order to increase RAM and, probably if lucky, with this make OC work better. How can I do that? Do I also need a custom kernel/rom for that?
The best stable Roms so far are the stock GingerBread based ones... but if you aks me about CM7 there a few like Apocalypse rom(ICS styled ROM) with the FireKernel that suports swap I think...
and for Swap you only need a Kernel with Swap enabled and a SWAP Partition on your Sd card...
lets see im fine and stable with 979 mhz without reboot for 9 hours
overclock is depend on your hardware
best over clock freq.

The best and most stable overclock freq. is actually 906mhz-864mhz. It works like a charm mate! Try it.

Using CPU high frequencies is not recommended, your device's life will be reduced considerably

Any updates?
hello i am using your kernel now for some month and it was really nice. but since some months there is no progress here. are you working on it anymore? an update would be nice after over 3 months now. I would have really some "good" additions und suggestions for the kernel. Furthermore, philz touch has a new version out. would be really nice if you could update it to the latest version. the cwm integrated to the cm11 stock kernel now is newer as the base of your last released forest kernel. Also some here have deep sleep problems. Also it would be nice if you could look for sabermod/Linaro und archi optimizations or -03 optimization of the kernel in general. thanks for your great kernel!
would be nice if you could comment short here so that your fans know that you are working on this anymore or not
That's gotta get funny... Getting my popcorn ready! ?

Too busy at work so not working on it for now. Maybe when there is CM stable or CM Lilopop....
For those who has deep sleep prob, should try disabling the sync. Use synker app to manually turn sync on/off.

What exactly is the difference between the one with trim support and the one without . how do i choose which one to flash?

The one that has TRIM has TRIM. The one that doesn't have TRIM doesn't have TRIM. You can choose which one to flash by searching and reading what TRIM is, understanding the risks, and then deciding whether you're willing to take on the risk or not. Simple as that.
Am using v3 kernal for nightowl ..phones heating..but v1 is stable for me no heating and very snappy .thankyou for the kernal

Use no frills, underclock to 1.2 GHz.. Then use ondemand Governor... Problem solved..
Dear Forest, am I correct that the forest kernel beta4 in comparison to r9 is missing lcd oc?
Is there now any advantages left over r9 since cpu oc got removed?

If u cant read properly the op and cant flash and try for your self then dont go to xda asking nonsense questions.

Whats ur problem? This q+a or not?
I used v3ts until now on rr528. Since theres no b4 i switched to nightowl b4. And now Raw4 ist out that offers trim, gpu driver upd, oled oc and fpbug. I used to use forest because of cpu oc. Now that it is gone i wonder if there still is any supremacy of ur kernel that i dont see.
So what is ur problem with this question?
Why don't you just use whatever kernel you like and stop trolling?
Gesendet von meinem GT-N7000 mit Tapatalk
English is not my first language so i might not see the intentions of ur answers. I dont mean to troll. I want to continue using forests kernel and was wondering what the current state in comparison to raw it is in as these are the only custom kernels available. Since this is somehow an offence to someone dont mind anserwing this anymore. Its not an issue.
The link
The link for the downloading the kernel Forest-LP-Kernel_V4 from dropbox doesn't work. It suggests me to register on the dropbox.
I've downloaded it.
A Little Request and Questions
Greetings Forest! I am a new user of XDA, so forgive me if I made mistakes in presentation or in technical accuracy.
I am currently using your Kernel with CM11, and as far as stability goes, everything is working fine, although I find myself facing instabilities using the PegasusQ governor. Looking at the governer closely through ROM toolbox lead me to realise that there a hotplug settings existent for 4 core devices, while the Galaxy Note only has 2. Is this an issue? As far as it goes, I find myself waking up to a device showing the bootanimation continuously, but very slowly and choppy, forcing me to restart the phone. Luckily I wake up on time for work via instinct. Apart from that, the phone crashes except when using ondemand. Is there any explanation for these crashes?
Now for the requests. Since ondemand is not really the best, as I have seen more responsive and effective governors like SmartAssV2, which is personally my favourite. I've also read up on Interactive being a more responsive version of ondemand, I was wondering if you could include more governors for the kernel. Unless of course, governors are limited to CPU types which I hope not, then probably this post would've been written for nothing.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Do understand that I am not in the field of programming, and I apologise if I made any mistakes. I look forward to your reply.

Thank u for investigating the bug and helpful report:good:. I am also testing with stock cm kernel using pegasusq and also got a freeze. Now i can recalled similar problem faced by Slimsaber. On the other hand, my kernel run well on omni and omni based. So there seems to be some issues with some governors but only happen in CM and CM based rom. I will try to fix or remove/add some new governors when I can.
For now should use Ondemand!
Update

Well, today I woke up to a frozen boot animation screen, even on ondemand. Although ondemand lasted longer before crashing.
There might be much more issues with CM.
I will test out OmniRom later this afternoon.

Hm. That present some new challenge. I am back to cm now to test it more. will also update the kernel soon to apply some changes in governors and other changes to improve stability.
