MediaBrowser is more than a media manager. It's a powerful open-source platform that you can use to manage, view, play and control your media on most mainstream hardware...
MediaBrowser consists of a server and any one or more of many clients to view and manage your multimedia collection. You are able to enjoy your TV, Movies, Music, E-Books, Games* and Emulators* around your house in a wonderful 10 foot interface. (*games and emulators can only be run on a machine on which it is installed)
The MediaBrowser Android, WindowsPhone 7/8 and Windows 8.1 clients connect to your MediaBrowser server and allow you to consume your media anywhere you are connected. (Playback not supported on WP7, only library and remote functions)
Don't have MediaBrowser? Visit http://www.mediabrowser3.com/

But wait!? You said open-source? but this is in the paid section?
Yes, while the MediaBrowser server and other clients are built on free open-source systems, the android, and windows phone, and windows 8 client applications are not. These 3 clients are the only of many pieces that require any type of purchase to use, if you choose to do so. Read on, and find out about the many other free open-source parts of MediaBrowser.
Developers:
MediaBrowser is an open source project and welcomes developers from all coding backgrounds. If you are a developer and wish to get involved head on over to our github repository and check it out. https://github.com/MediaBrowser
Our plugin store allows developers to make free, premium supporters only, and paid plugins available to users. While MediaBrowser is free, it does support itself on a supporter key system, where for a small donation, users have access to premium and paid plugins, in addition to the free plugins. **Plugins are currently only available for MB server, MB Classic and MB Theater, but you just may be the developer to change that!
And a Linux/OSx mono based server is under development. If you are an experienced Linux/osx dev, and would like to help out or join our team please feel free to stop by this thread here!

So what exactly is MediaBrowser?
Media Browser, beginning with version 3, is no longer a single program. It encompasses a large suite of applications all communicating with a central server that manages your library.
No longer locked inside Windows Media Center, Media Browser can now bring your entire media library to not only all of the computers on your network, but also many of your portable devices. Whether it's the Roku in the living room, or your tablet on the back porch, Media Browser will bring your media right to you.
And, we mean right to you as the user profile feature allows you to set up completely different views and options on your library based on who is accessing it. Keep different display styles, parental control levels and watched and favorite status' for all the different members of your household and all of that information travels with the user no matter what client or device they are using.
Start watching something at home on the HTPC and pick it back up where you left off on your phone or tablet on the train.

A little History on MediaBrowser?
Some of you may remember VideoBrowser which eventually matured into MediaBrowser and was solely a Windows Media Centre Plugin which allowed a user to display rich and detailed information about their media collections much like other available media front ends. The benefits of using MediaBrowser were having Live TV readily available and a large media collection in the same application. It then started allowing themeing and plugins to enhance the media experience?
MediaBrowser has come on leaps and bounds within the last year or so. Firstly, it’s no longer confined to Windows Media Centre, it’s undergone a complete overhaul, complete recoding and opened up a world of new beginnings for the HTPC world, where the community is always listening to improve the MediaBrowser experience as a whole to the end user.

So What’s Changed? Out with the old in with the new!
MediaBrowser now has a brain, a central nervous system which uses its Server Application and currently runs on your Windows based PC or even your server(Linux/Mono server is currently under development). The server is the hub of all things to do with your media collection, from Movies to Music Videos, Books to Games, MB has it all and allows the user to organise and categorize their collections as they deem fit for their use and application. Furthermore, it allows almost any device to connect to it from anywhere, such as Android, Windows Phone, iOS, Roku, Sky’s NowTV box, your favourite web browser, and standalone applications such as MediaBrowser Theatre, Windows 8 and still MediaBrowser Classic(WMC integration). These are all refered to as Apps/Clients within the MB world.

Collection Organization - Metadata Compatibility with Plex & XBMC
The Server and what it does for you?
The server runs on the PC where your media collection is or has fast access to, such as NAS drives, Everything is in place to automatically collect the right metadata information for your media collections including all the art that fanart.tv provides, it stores all this artwork in your item’s folder but can be edited from the metadata manager within the web dashboard. What’s beautiful about MB is that if you use MediaPortal, XBMC, Plex then MB is intelligent enough to understand the metadata structures for those front ends and also integrate with them. We now have many users using MB-Server and XBMC Front End. The server has the right amount of configuration available to not daunt a new comer to the HTPC world and can leave the settings at default, where as a power user can get stuck in and, tweak things the way they want their metadata scraped and saved.
The screen shots below show just how easy it is to edit images and the selection available that MB recognizes and uses.
At the moment, our server currently only runs on windows, however, a linux/OSx mono based server is under development. If you are an experienced Linux/osx dev, and would like to help out or join our team please feel free to stop by this thread here!

Apps and Accessing the Servers Content
Think about the Apps like shoppers in a mall, where the mall is the MB-Server and the MB-Apps are the customers, shopping around for things they like or want to see. It seems appropriate to call them these as that’s exactly what these MB-Apps do. Just about any handheld device, pad, laptop or pc can access the server using a dedicated app or access via a web browser, which in my eyes make life easy.
MBClassic (Original MB, WMC integration)
MBTheatre (Standalone PC based application)

iOS App (Available thru AppStore)

Newly supported:
Live TV
We now support live tv through the use of a modular service provider system. You'll need to install a service provider plugin, and at launch we have one, ServerWMC. We'd like to thank krustyreturns for being a part of this.
A next pvr plugin is also in development, and we also have a few more on our wish list - Argus TV, DVBViewer and DVBLink. If you would like to get involved and help develop one of these plugins, please let us know.
So let's get down to live tv. You have the ability to view the guide, watch a channel, and full recording management capabilities. And the web client design is responsive so that you can use it on your smartphone to schedule a recording when you're not home.
Transcoding Engine Improvements
Perhaps just as exciting as live tv, we've made significant improvements to our transcoding service that will really help reduce server cpu usage.

update post 2

Only copy freely content available thru serverWMC just for clarity...
The mb3 server is fantastic and ALL the clients are great.
The dev has done a great job with the windows phone app. Open to suggestions for improvement too. ServerWMC support coming soon, best feature on that is remotely setting recordings in my opinion. That said i don't watch much media on the go...
The android app is cracking on a tablet and the dev is looking to support android media players in the future. Which with serverWMC should make for an impressive cheap mediacenter!!!

what speed of router are you using? B/G/N/AC? what type of content? avi, mkv, mpg?
what is the processor speed of the server machine? it has to transcode if the file bitrate exceeds your wifi speed.
the problem is not your phones, it is your server, network, or content.
it works wonderfully on my Bell S4 on a N network, playing all my files, from a AMD FX 8 core server machine (any dual core 2.5 GHz or better should suffice)

Currently there is no official thread for XDATV feedback, so thought I would start one (not too worried if this gets used or if another one is started by the XDATV guys).
First off, I love the concept of XdaTv and I was looking forward to watching the videos as and when they are posted. However, the main issue I have is I am unable to view them on my phone (particularly while offline), this is the main opportunity I would have to watch them.
I would like to have a proper podcast style RSS Feed available, i.e. containing links to downloadable video files (mp4 or similar) which I can then play via the RSSTab as and when I have the time.
If people are interested, I am able to create a RSS Feed myself and host the files from something like Dropbox (Assuming Xda agree), obviously it'll be better if Xda are able to offer this directly.
Add your thoughts to this thread, or comments about XdaTv in general and vote in the poll.

Good idea, guys. We're going to look into having a video podcast feed. We could probably get it on iTunes and Zune, too.

Well I've been experimenting with publishing RSSFeeds, so I've created an experimental one.
At the moment I've just got the 1st video up (in flv and mp4 format), I can test to see if this works on my device and perhaps provide some more until an Official Podcast is created. Will work out which format works best on my device and use that for the rest.
Of course, if there is an issue with posting the podcast then I shall remove it immediately, just let me know.
Feed REMOVED - USE THE OFFICIAL ONE
IMO having both youtube/podcast would yield a better return for more potential members vs just the podcast. Youtube is just a mishmash of crap, but its also where "everyone" goes to view videos. Therefore you'd get some stragglers as well as allowing others to embed on other sites to draw some attraction to XDA.
This is just one mans' opinion.
Random observation/idea...
http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/xdatv/ lists the tag page for xdatv...
I am pretty sure there is a backend RSS feed accessible via some hidden URL... If I can figure it out, there would be an RSS link to subscribe your reader to

The RSS link above to the YouTube channel does this, but for proper podcast style feed (i.e. one which supports downloading of videos to the device for off-line viewing) you need links to the video files rather than the YouTube stream.
[It would be really handy if those links were available HINT HINT]
However, I do use the tags to find the XdaTv posts so I can insert a suitable description etc.
I think YouTube supported it or intended to (hence the "&format=17" which is supposed to related to mp4 format), but it does not work. There is even a site which formats the links to do this, but for whatever reason it doesn't work here.
For now I'll host the podcast feed, since it is the easiest way for me to view it while experimenting anyway. The issue I may have is if I over-run my bandwidth hosting the videos, but will deal with that if I need to.
Anyway, the unofficial podcast is up and running and I've already used it to view the two videos I've put on there (so I'll be adding some more tonight). I'll try to ensure the latest one is on there and slowly build up the list of the older ones.
UPDATE
I might have found a way around the hosting problem as I may have found a way to directly access the videos.

Its not easy for me to test (don't have YouTube access during the day) but I've set up a feed with some test links in so I should be able to check to see if it works tonight.
Not sure if my method is suitable (using KeepVid to get the links), you get the following kind-of links:
Code:
http://v11.lscache5.c.youtube.com/videoplayback?sparams=id,expire,ip,ipbits,itag,algorithm,burst,factor,oc:U0dYTlZUTl9FSkNNOF9OTlJB&fexp=906339&algorithm=throttle-factor&itag=5&ipbits=0&burst=40&sver=3&signature=0ADF1F4DADBA0E68A2CBA21D56BBB5E009468905.D329E84182EFBC9E03C18AE75F25B4FECD0CA571&expire=1299690000&key=yt1&ip=0.0.0.0&factor=1.25&id=652e189f57cfefec&title=azrienoch%20Weekly%20Recap%20-%204%20March%20-%20XDA%20TV%20[www.keepvid.com]
I don't know if the link has limits or will expire too quickly etc. but that's what I shall test. Don't really know anything about the formatting of the link, would be interesting to know though.
Not sure if there is a better way to do it, but clearly if I don't need to host the videos then it is a lot simpler.
(In fact, once I've tested it, I will post all the videos to date in one go!).
Any preference on mp4 or flv files???
The current podcast has an example of both - so please try and see which plays and looks best on your device.
The flv files are smaller, but mp4 is better quality (Note - I will be using the smallest option of both as this is for mobile devices).
i.e.
FLV 400x226
MP4 640x360
Date FLV MP4
4Mar 12Mb 25Mb
8Mar 23Mb 43Mb
1Mar 49Mb 30Mb (12min55sec)
4Feb 11Mb 20Mb (4min42sec)
The direct links do not work unfortunately. I guess it needs an open youtube session or something to work...
Any suggestions are welcome for linking/hosting these files...
Feed REMOVED - USE THE OFFICIAL ONE
OK, the podcast is live, running and working nicely.
Just watched two more and I am definitely a fan!
Excellent work guys, totally worth the effort to make a podcast for, I hope it helps spread the XdaTv goodness.
XDA Insider - Good start to the series, really great to see some of the faces behind the posts. I look forward to seeing more!
Android ROM Rundown - I don't have a proper android device but it is interesting to see what is being done to the roms which are out there and the features that are available and being developed.
azrienoch Weekly Recap - There is nothing I can say which can describe this one, it's just something you have to watch and then you are hooked. Love it!
Quality work here guys, keep it up!
Updated the podcast to include the latest videos.
Most recent:
azrienoch Weekly Recap – 18 March – XDA TV
I've dropped the flv files, since the mp4 files are working fine on my device (and no one has given an opinion, so I'll not upload new flv files).
Podcast is updated to "azrienoch Weekly Recap 8 April XDA TV".
Enjoy!

Just found this, thanks for working on it! I'm just wondering where exactly you're at or how you maintain it, because I'm hearing that you convert and download them, then add them to the feed, am I correct? Even if there's not a way to download directly, there's got to be a way to automate the process. Let me know, I'm willing to help brainstorm ideas.

Yes, unfortunately I do it manually, hence the lag in posting them.
The main problem is the video files and I don't have direct you-tube access during the day (which is why podcasting them is my best option). It started as an experiment to play around with how Podcasts are generated, but I found it is the easiest way to keep up with XdaTV for me.
I use KeepVid.com to get the files, which generates a download url for me (but I think it generates a session id in order to download the files so I can't link directly unfortunately).
The extra problem is after I get the videos I have to upload them to a file share site which supports direct linking (no captchas) - currently using FileDen, which is ok at the moment, but it does have bandwidth limits.
Then I can add the info into the rss file,
Code:
<title>
<description>
<link> - Use the link to xda portal post
<enclosure url>
<pubDate>
I then push it through Google Feedburner, which adds a layer so you can keep a static address for the feed (and it also provides stats and re-links the videos).
Unfortunately, I think YouTube did have the ability to provide podcast feeds automatically at one point (it's documented in the feed api somewhere) but I think it's been removed for a while now (I expect since it by-passes the advert system it was not much use).
____________________________________________________
Now to automate this...
Considering the youtube feed has all the required info in (except the video!):
http://www.youtube.com/rss/user/xdadevelopers/videos.rss
It wouldn't take too much to adjust that feed to create a new podcast feed if the video links were available and in a consistent format from somewhere (either date or the youtube id perhaps "PvXb7B1ihQg.mp4"). That is something I can probably code up without too much trouble (the code I use for the RSSTab is doing similar things).
SO if the videos can be hosted somewhere, I can make a program to generate the rest of the podcast automatically, and perhaps upload it too. Otherwise, I'm going to find it difficult to keep up!
Anyway, XdaTV is so good, I am more than happy to spend the time and effort to get it podcasting and help spread the quality entertainment. No reason at all why the podcast couldn't be added to iTunes etc once it is up and running correctly (will have to find out what is required to do that though).
If we were to render in a small format as well as in a large one for YouTube and then send the small one to you when we upload the other, that'd help. Not sure what the space limitations are for the host you're using, but we might be able to convince the admins to host on xda and that'd solve that problem.
What resolution and size are the videos youre hosting now?

Such a good job, Steve! Probably it's the best streaming solution currently available on the marketplace.
I just have a few (edited: he-he, "a few" ) feature requests, will be great to see 'em in the next release. Could you please:
- add MediaElement's volume control to the player and save/restore selected volume level;
- bookmark media position and resume playback from that position;
- auto resume playback after seek;
- disable err.media message and send email dialog (or at least make it configurable) - it's really annoyng. The reason: some people (like me) have some non-media files in the supported folders
- add an option to skip intermediate page and start playback instantly;
- add "Recently viewed medias" view;
- remember and restore (on app start) last visited server's folder. This option may be configurable;
- add an option to prevent playback on mobile connection (if option set, player should pause and stop streaming if connection switched to 3G/4G, and resume playback on WiFi/Eth);
- autorotate images based on EXIF orientation metadata;
- add ability to disable automatic image rotation based on handset orientation.
These ones are easy.
The hard one: could you implement adaptive streaming (bitrate based) "on the fly"?
I think with these enhancements your solution will be unbeatable! Thanks for hard work.
WBR, SeNS
P.S. Your server-side UPNP code for auto port mapping is not working with my router (NetGear FVG318). If you are interested, I can send you 100% working UPNP code (on C# but it shouldn't be a problem), PM me.

2/3/2014 - Chromecast SDK Released! API Available Now!

Read Here!
Chromecast makes it easy to enjoy all of your favorite online content on a TV screen with the simple press of a button on your phone, tablet or laptop. We want to make it easier for that content to get to your TV, so today we’re releasing the Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers who want to build Chromecast support into their apps and websites. For the rest of us, that means even more of our favorite movies, TV shows and music will become available on Chromecast as developers work with the SDK. Just be on the lookout for the cast button in your favorite apps and websites across Android, iOS and Chrome.
If you’re a developer looking to bring your content to the big screen, head on over to the Google Developers Blog for a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of it all. Meanwhile, for everyone else, a current list of apps that work with Chromecast can be found at chromecast.com/apps. Happy casting!

So I assume this means we will soon be able to cast our full screens to our Chromecasts very soon! Let's Rejoice! And don't forget to thank the devs!
Mods please delete the thread I was just a little too late in posting this

Developers: Is this useful/Could an App like this be created?

Hello, I don't know much about coding, or Andriod Developing apps. But came up with this.
A Wesbite/App which can have like a large Online database/torrent whereby users can pick any torrents and simply click on then and STREAM them directly.
After doing some research I found this:
The closest thing is from some Russians, who have managed to successfully, create some sort of new Unique protocol or something like that ^^^, and it works GREAT, however its LIMITED to Russian and TV only.
Could an Developer use this Unique Technology/Protocol and create an English type or library?

Ace Stream platform provides excellent audio-visual quality for Internet online broadcasts/shows and the most effective system of storing and delivering audio and video content.
Note: Ace Stream users watch online video with audio-visual quality level ten times greater than quality of video on YouTube (provided in 1080p format) and many times greater than broadcasts/shows of all other existing services of VoD and Live Stream provided by OTT (Over The Top) service operators, which do not use P2P technology.
No existing Live Stream service or standard CDN operator using unicast can provide live broadcast with the same high level quality, for the same number of viewers, that can be provided by the average Ace Stream user from his personal computer using home Internet-channel!

The tools, are all there! if someone or any developer can use them, it can be very advantageous. If you know any developers please share that or PM me

Jide Mini PC Apps (claimed to be working)

Okay, so I got tired of going from post to post looking for working apps on the Jide forum site. The following are a list of apps that Users claim to be working for them. Warning: they may necessarily work for every user, but on the other hand it may! So download and use at your own risk. If you find a problem using any app listed, but then find a way to fix it, that others may use, then please return and post it. Do not post the same solution twice folks! Please do not return and post it did not work for you or that the work around also failed. Like I stated before these apps and or their workaround may not work for everyone. Please do post additional apps not listed. I know some are repeats on my list, but I will try to clean it up as I go.
Good Luck., "Takes us out Mr. Zulu".

NBC-plays everything except the Live Stream. Scrolling is a pain. You have to put the cursor on the far right (there is nothing there; it is a leap of faith), hold down the left mouse button and scroll up. When you run out of room, stop and repeat.
NBC Sports Live Extra App does not like the live feed, much like the NBC App. Sometimes it gets stuck in authorizing after you login to your cable or satellite provider, sometimes it crashes and closes the app. Highlights played fine. I cannot test full replay.

Time Warner App. Scrolling issues too, but once you start scrolling (see above on how), at least you get a scroll bar. The guide shows channel numbers as you scroll. It looks weird, but you get used to it and I see an advantage to it. On Demand plays great. I cannot figure out how to change the channel on Live TV. I am stuck watching A&E and Dog the Bounty Hunter. It looks like the live channel guide comes up quickly, then it disappears. Unlike On Demand, Live TV is not full screen. But it plays good.
Just switched my display from 720p to 1080p and it has made a big difference on some apps functionality.

TVMC works well except for
1. cursor alignment- Fix for cursor alignment and screen area in TVMC/KODI is: in appdrawer rightclick on TVMC/KODI and choose "open in fullscreen mode".
2. the app screen area seems to be larger than the screen area set in Remix OS display settings.
For those having mouse pointer misalignment issues in KODI, you may want to make sure when you first setup Remix Mini, your video screen area stays inside your TV/Monitor. Make sure you run KODI in full screen mode. Within the system setting of KODI , goto video calibration and again make sure the KODI screen area fit inside your TV/Monitor. That works for me!
Emby works pretty well, could use some dev on audio syncinc on certain videos.
Purely emulator request:
1) Snes9x EX+, the screen and button is out of place. But playable with keyboard navigation.
2) ePSXe is almost there, except slightly out of screen.
So far the performace is good. Hope you can resolve the issue soon.
RetroArch game emulator. Works flawlessly with my PS3 controller. Now I can play the games I grew up with. Mario, Legend of Zelda etc.... Although your kids may laugh at the graphics. Took about 20 mins to get it set up and locate the roms online.
