Hi all.
Anyone else not receiving push notifications from Facebook / Messenger on sleep (with or without Stamina Mode on)?
For messages, notifications only have a 100% received rate only when a chat head is popped out and the screen is on.
Also I'm trying to figure out whether it is a Facebook / Messenger bug and/or XZ / XZ related bug.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Kind regards.
The most probable reason I can think of is that somewhere it states to block everything when the screen is off, aka not really to sleep mode, but due to the screen being off.
Does it happen on Wifi only or any connection?

On any connection. Even more, when a push notification for e.g. Messenger message is missed while the screen is off, it is received immediately after turning the screen on.

Reflashing either kernel, even more ROM would be my last resort on this as I regard it as a minor issue. I was mostly wondering if anyone else got this and fixed it somehow.
Reading user reviews on Play Store for Messenger, it turns out it is a Messenger issue. Will wait for an improved version.
Try adding Facebook/Messenger to your Stamina Mode white list. I had similar issue which was fixed by adding apps to SM white list

They were already added. I'm 99.9% definite it is a Messenger issue, so I'll wait for fixes in updates.

I just upgraded from Note 2 to Note 3. My push notifications (for gmail, hangouts and facebook chats) are delayed by 15 mins to upto 2 hours in some cases. I never had this issue with Note 2 (4.1.2 stock), I always used to get notifications instantly. Now with note 3, I receive all notifications with delay and all of them come at the same time after the delay.
I created a text file and I logged my wifi connection using tasker. Wifi doesnt get disconnected, its always connected. My wifi sleep policy is to have wifi always on. I know I have steady wifi connection cause I am using it with other devices.
This occurs only when the phone is idling. If I am actively using it, it works fine. But this is really pain cause whenever someone sends me "instant message" I usually get it after an hour even though I am in full wifi coverage (60Mbps)
Anyone else experienced this problem with their android devices lately? Know of any solution?

I had this happen like one time and never looked into the cause of it. It never reoccurred so I just kind of shrugged it off. That's really bizarre...
Just got a note 3 a week ago and all my push notifications (whatsapp, facebook, etc) are delayed when the screen is closed. When it is opened, it delays less.
I tried using the PNF app to change the heartbeat (the non rooted version), messed with all the configurations on the wifi (it happens with wifi on or off).
Still happening after 2 weeks!! No one else having the same issue?

I have same problem. Took back my first note 3 thinking it was defective and the new one doing samething. Frustrating.im thinking I'm gonna have to go to different phone sadly
I got the same problem. I have a European version. Sent it back to Samsung but they couldn't find something... Did anyone found a solution yet? Because it's really frustrating.
As of late, I have been running into similar issues, though they don't seem to on a permanent basis (sometimes I get notified within seconds or minutes, sometimes it takes a few hours or until I unlock my device).
My phone is a german version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 running the Samsung stock Android version 4.4.2
One of the possible causes for this upon which I stumbled during my search for a solution was that the push connection might time out once in a while and take up to half an hour to be reestablished due to the long heartbeat interval set in stock Android.
But since the interval should be between 15 minutes (WiFi) and 28 minutes (3G) as stated in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142503, this would not account for notifications being delayed by several hours or even not to arrive at all while the screen is turned off.
Does anybody know whether Samsung stock might be implementing some kind of additional sleep mode which might prevent the connection from being reestablished by heartbeat monitoring and maybe even how to turn this 'feature' off without root (last thing I heard, rooting a Note 3 might trigger an e-fuse used as additional security measure for Samsung KNOX, but also allowing them to entirely refuse hardware warranty on rooted devices)?
Thanks!
I sent it back 2 times now, but still no solution. I also want to try a custom rom to see if that fixes it, but I'm also afraid that I lose my warranty if I root my device. If anybody can confirm that the stock rom is the problem, you'd help me a ton!

I do face this problem on my note3. I already do hard reset few time but still delay on my whatsapp and yahoo mail. Im using Note 3 LTE running Kitkat 4.4.2
I guess no one has a solution for this yet?
The problem is not app specific. The delay in notification happens all across the board. When my phone is sleeping, i dont get any notification. As soon as I wake it up, all notification come at the same time, including Yahoo mail, Gmail, hangout messages, whatsapp, Google voice, twitter and others.
It seems like the wifi/data is disabled when phone is sleeping. I double checked in the Advanced Wifi option that wifi is always on.

It most likely only happens if the provider (your router for wifi, your carrier for 3G/4G) closes a connection after a certain amount of time goes by that it's not used. The heartbeat (the phone sends out a message on the connection every x minutes) keeps the connection open. Either 4.4.2 doesn't send the heartbeat any longer (it's not really part of Android, so there's no guarantee that Google will keep it when they update Android), or the provider of those people seeing the problem has a shorter timeout than the 15 minutes(wifi)/28 minutes (3G/4G) that the phone uses. PNF allows you to shorten the heartbeat time. 5 minutes is usually short enough to work for any connection, but you can shorten it more if you need to. (It won't use more battery - sending a keep-alive message takes a lot less battery than reestablishing the connection.)

Hi guys,
Has anyone had any problems with whatsapp on our phone? The app seems to get killed somehow when the phone goes to sleep, so I don't receive any messages until I open it up. I've not got any powersaver modes running and background data is allowed etc etc, it's getting very annoying and i'm sure the phone is killing a background process but can't work out how to fix it.
Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers
I had a similar issue with hangouts but I cleared cache and data and it worked again. maybe give this a shot for whatsapp

No problem at all.
I use stamina mode all the time, excluding Gmail, Whatsapp, Timely and Cerberus, and I receive emails and messages.
My firmware version is 23.0.A.2.98
I have stamina mode activated all the time but whatsapp works great
Thanks for your replies, i don't what the problem is. The same thing happens if i am in stamina mode (with the app whitelisted) or not in stamina mode.
I have tried re-installing, clearing cache and data etc but the problem perists. I guess i will have to ask the app developers, presumably they will blame the phone

When you notice it start happening, check the "running apps" in settings. Do most of them show "restarting" etc? I think I have the same issue. It looks like a memory leak on my side.
I've seen similar to this but I think it might also be related to when other people have a connection. My wife has issues with her work wifi and sometimes I only get her messages once she's back on our home network. I see the time stamp in whatsapp as the time she originally wrote the message...
Thanks - will check that next time i see it happening, it doesn't look like it has restarted recently but possibly was "pausing". I've restarted my phone now so all processes are on the same clock so i can spot any breaks easier next time

Cheers but seems not likely as messages from multiple contacts appear at the same time when i open the app, so the problem must be on my end
Quick update, i've had the problem happen again and checked the running apps, there was no pause happening. Even this morning on the train i was looking at the internet, so my phone was connected to data and obviously not asleep and i got no messages. Later on, i opened the app and a message appeared, sent at the time i was looking at the internet. I'm flummoxed. Will raise a support call and update if i have any luck
Hi guys,
I recently changed from a nexus 5 and the phone is super nice. Of course, hardware > software.
In any case, I noticed a starting a few days back that I do not get gmail push notifications as they come.
Meaning, I have to pull to refresh. This also means that I do not get new gmail notifications.
I did some fiddling around with the settings and it wasn't set to notify me for all new mail but even with this on, I don't get timely notifications.
I did further research and noticed that I get my notifications on wifi but not on regular data.
-edit-
I tried it again and now both wifi and data are not reliable. I'm on a hotel wifi connection so I expected this but I wasn't expecting this from the data.
Has anyone heard of the S6edge having possible radio/modem issues? If so, I'm going to go exchange this device for another s6e.
I'm really hoping that it doesn't come to that and that it's a software issue more than hardware.
The thing is, I don't know if anyone knows but the same thing above happens to me with an application called kakao talk (a korean version of whatsapp)
I don't get push notifications and when I open the app I get bombarded with messages.
After opening the app and then closing it, I get updates like normal.
I can't figure this out. Do any one of you have any suggestions?
I don't get notifications for gmail or inbox either, everything is turned on. It was bothering me before but I got used to it . I use kakao religiously but with notifications off..I'll tick then on and see

I couldn't wait and I just factory reset my phone.
Gmail notifications come as they should without me having to manually refresh the feed.
Yesterday morning I was on wifi and kakao notifications came in time as well, but I forgot to try this on the network and slept after turning it off last night.
This morning I woke up a little earlier than my alarm and noticed no notifications thinking I didn't get any.
However as soon as my alarm rang and I turned it off, notifications started coming.
Am I going insane? The device seems to go into some network sleep mode and will only start connecting once it's literally awaken.
I'm trying to rule out app bug, software bug, but most importantly, if this is a hardware bug.
If this is a hardware issue, I only have about a week to exchange it.

Disable and uninstall (updates) google play services. Later on you can re-update google play services. I know this is same as doing a factory reset but it is worth a try. I did the same to fix mine.

Hello fellow note 9 owners....
I'm facing an issue when I close whatsapp and lock the screen I don't get notifications that I have new messages nor do they get delivered to me unless I open WhatsApp. I think I tried everything to fix it.... Here's what I tried
I put WhatsApp in the unmonitored app list in the battery settings, I'm in performance mode, I cleared cache, I uninstalled WhatsApp, reinstalled it fresh not from a restore. Is there anything else I should do to fix this?
Mine is okay so far (exynos) however, when I am connected to whatsapp web (on my computer, on the same wifi network with my note 9) , it'll lose connection to the phone at random intervals. I'd have to unlock the phone, launch whatsapp for whatsapp web to be connected once again.

It seems that I cannot fix it since I tried literally everything and yet, on my friend's note 9, everything is working flawless.

Same issue but for nearly all apps which require the internet for a notification. Only get the issue on mobile data, when connected to wi-fi all are instant.

I also have the same problem i have tried a lot of solution but none works.
Changed Rom several times, using PNF-root to change heartbeat interval, uninstalled Universal GMS Doze, setting whatsapp as not optimized, deleted whatsapp and data.
Nothing just nothing have helped, im currently on syberia Rom xiaomi Mi5.
But i dont think its Rom related because i had the same problem on Xiaomi.eu ROM and other Roms

Actually I thought it was solved by turning off the battery optimization (which it was on by mistake) and thought it was solved but tonight had again the same issue.
In the morning received only the notifications/messages after opening whatsapp.
I'm not sure if this options below might not also be part of the issue (despite not making sense but who knows...)
This might be a problem for people running Android Pie and One Ui on their Note 9s. I don't believe these problems existed on Oreo. Lets wait a see when an update will be pushed to fix this problem. Until then my wife's Note 9 is staying on Oreo.
For those of you that have updated to Pie how has it affected battery life? Better or worse? If better by how much? SOT Etc

When I got the note 9 the update for Pie was 3 days after so didn't have the chance to have it properly tested, but I think I had the issue on both versions.
This issue exists since Samsung introduced their device maintenance. Switching off batterie optimisation for WhatsApp was the solution for me. Actually only WhatsApp, threema and k9-mail have problems receiving push in standby on my phones, any other apps I use don't have this issue. Therfore I think it's more an issue with the apps, less with the rom. Also Samsung states in the settings that apps in standby may not receive actualisations or send notifications.
Go to stettings->apps->WhatsApp and turn off batterie optimisation
Before Samsung introduced this feature, I was using greenify and had the same issue with some apps.
Like I mentioned earlier. I had issues with Telegram and WhatsApp notifications on Oreo. Now on pie beta 3 no issues. Also my WhatsApp and telegram *are* battery optimized. So I'd say you should be looking at other avenues to remedy this problem. Maybe review the app notifications for whatsapps carefully.

The app notifications are flawless.
The issue is not the notifications, otherwise they would be there but just not being notified on the system.
Even when opening the phone and unlocking it, they are not on the phone, BUT when the app is opened you start actually receiving the messages in a fast manner flow almost like they are just being texted at a very fast pace, so it seems more like they have just been pushed rather than having the message there and simply not notified, otherwise would be having a static last message.
The app seems to be in sleep mode even when whitelisted.
At the moment I have absolutely everything off inside the optimization
The background mobile data is ON
IS even allowed while data saver is ON (Which I don't use anyway)
The sleeping apps, for whatsapp is whitelisted (OFF)
AND it still have the same issue, either the app is optimized or not optimized which does not make sense.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have 1 note 9 with Gbwhatsapp and another note 9 with stock Whatsapp. Have issues on both.
One was updated to pie and then did factory reset and restored from cloud (unless the backed up settings somehow contributed to an error and other was just OTA updated without any reset. They even operate on different networks.
Seems pretty odd...
To me the app is showing exactly the same behavior as behaving like the list of "sleeping apps", despite the fact it's whitelisted.
I have Edge Lighting enabled and set to always on and the 2 apps I want to show notifications when the screen is off are enabled: Signal and Orgzly. I disabled Always-On Display and Edge Lighting should still work, right? My understanding is that with Edge Lighting, my screen is off and when I get notifications, it will trigger. Essentially, it's a replacement to the traditional LED light. The only time I've seen Edge Lighting triggered is when I'm actually using my phone (i.e. the screen is on), which is pretty pointless. The only time the screen goes from off to "notifying" me is when I'm getting a call.
I'm not sure if I need certain permissions for the apps, but I did enable notifications for them. I have disabled "Allow background activity" for all my apps--don't think this is relevant.
Any help is much appreciated. It's frustrating because I've been using my S10 significantly less than my old phone just because I'm not getting any notifications when the screen is off, which is most of the time.
P.S. Not sure if related, but occasionally I'm not even getting notifications unless I literally open the app, then I get bombarded with notifications accumulated. It's not so often that I feel there's a solution for it.
