Installing custom rom, on galaxy s gt-i9000, with a busted power button - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there i am relatively new to android modding and rooting etc. I recently tried to install Cyanogenmod to my phone and I succeeded, but the next day my phone began to restart itself, turns out that the power button is broken. We tried to repair it but ended up burning down the processors internal i/o (latch or whatever structure it has) with a faulty multimeter . Now i have to turn on my phone with a dock cable (with 1kohm res) which wakes up the phone, i can access the Download mode by plugging in the dock, and pressing home+down, but the recovery needs the power button signal too.
I can access the recovery by using adb commands, but i need to boot in. If i install a new recovery like CWM, i am stuck in a bootloop and i don't know if i can use the adb commands. Is there any other way to get into recovery mode, besides home+power+up, or adb commands?
Can i install CM onto the phone under these circumstances?
Thanks for any help given!

Not sure how you are going to select options in recovery as you need the power button unless you have Touch Recovery or TWRP recovery. Anyway use this app to boot to recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1423071

Well if i install a new recovery mod like clockworkmod then i'll be in one. That is why it is necessary to reboot in it so i can install the ROM.

Rather get your power button replaced.

[Q] Need to download a nandroid backup. Got stuck on bootloop, no power button

My nexus one is stuck in a bootloop, the power button is broken and it has a locker bootloader, so i cant flash a update.zip or a custom rom, can't flash or access the amon ra recovery (amon ra was already installed, so i tried to install again and it didnt worked) or even it's original recovery.img.
The only thing i think i can do is to flash a nandroid backup with fastboot, but i don't have one. Can anyone send me one for me to try to fix it?
I dont live in the USA, so there is no way i can send it to HTC to fix it
I think you're a little confused. The reason the recovery didn't flash via fastboot is because your bootloader is locked, it's also the reason why attempting to flash nandroid .img files will also not work. You can either unlock the bootloader or use the PASSIMG method to get into a working system, at which point you can adb reboot recovery to restore your nandroid. There are other ways but I find this to be the quickest and simplest.
Can't do either of those things without a power button.
If you have Amon Ra's recovery installed then you can use ADB to boot into it (adb reboot recovery), or install Quickboot from the Market, and do what you need to.

First thing is to power up your n1 w/o touching the power button.
Here is how:-
The trick is to connect the phone via USB to a power source (a charger or computer) and then to remove and insert the battery successively, after a while (5-10 insertions) the device will get confuse and will start.
Once u power up, proceed to your recovery and do whatever u need to do to recover your bootloop.

Sure, here you go. Once completed you can either pull your battery or fastboot reboot to get into the stock ROM. From there, I'm sure you know what to do

Just one more question, will i need the power button for this PASSIMG method? because mine is broken, that's why i can't unlock my bootloader neither. on the bootloader unlock method it says that i need to press the power button to confirm the procedure.
I think with the PASSIMG method you don't need the power button.

PASSIMG method didn't worked. It says:
Hold down the Volume Down button as you power your phone back on.
A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. This will take up to 2 minute
When i power on the phone and press volume down, it just boots at fastboot, nothing else happens =\
Vol- should take you to HBOOT? To get to Fastboot you'd have to hold the trackball.

yeah, u're right
I already tried trackball vol up, vol down, nothing happened
Well that's good then. When you get into HBOOT you should see text flash up on the screen that it's checking for the passimg, then it should as you to use a volume button to say yes/no
If you're getting to hboot and nothing is happening, it's probably an error with your file:
Check the file name.
Check that it isn't a zip within a zip.
Make sure you used a shipped image.
Check the md5.
Try with FRG33, I've used it in the past and its worked fine. Also as danger-rat said, make sure it isn't named PASSIMG.zip.zip as Windows usually hides file extensions.

Well, i tryed using clockwork with a 1024mb EXT, 512mb ad a 5120mb with 32mb of swap. All of them caused the bootloop.

Rom manager cannot boot your device into recovery( at least not for me)
you can boot into recovery by powering off then press both: volume up and power. you will see a screen with choices you will need to choose number 2 and it should boot into recovery.
I would suggest that you start over completely which will wipe the whole system. And use a rooted stock or custom rom from this forum. There is substantial amount of information on doing this in this forum and you will have to read, research before doing anything.
You can achieve this by reading the second post in general forum and skip to post 10.

Wish you would do a search here in the forum
If you did then you'd find a custom Clockwork Mod for your Streak but you're gonna have to not be lazy and learn to flash it with fastboot commands
And.even then you can't boot directly into Clockwork Mod. You have to go through stock recovery first
You have some reading to do

Well I have some possibly bad news for you....
Unfortunately most that have tried to do a Factory Reset from within Android end up with their Streak 7 in what is called Read Only mode for which the only fix is sending it to Dell.
To boot recovery you have to hold BOTH the Volume + and Power buttons at the same time until its in recovery.
From stock recovery you then choose factory reset. I would recommend you do nothing more than that until you learn fastboot and adb commands. Like I told you earlier, you have a lot of reading to do

First, APX and Fastboot are two completely separate systems.
Second, Press Volume+ and Power, then chose the section option there that says "Install a package" that should take you into recovery.

For fastboot , press and HOLD (Volume Down) and (Power), press and hold till its at a black screen with red text.
Then in device manager install the Dell Streak 7 Bootloader (we call them fastboot) drivers.
Command will NOT flash, and be done
It will say something like this
"reading recovery.....OKAY
writing recovery.....OKAY
completed in xxxx seconds"

Broken recovery / endless bootloop!

Hello there,
a few days ago i got a lot of problems with my wifi connections, and in a german forum they told me to check if a custom rom could work for me. So i installed the "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" tools to install the cwm and so on. After i flashed the recovery.img, my tablet restarted and now i am stucked in a boot loop.
The big problem is, I am not able to reach the menu for RCK and so on again with VOL- and Power Button. Just restarting and restarting and restarting... i can not connect via adb or fastboot. The only thing i can do is VOL+ and Power, Windows 8 then gives a signal of a connection, but i don't know what to do with this - cause I only have a black screen!
I hope, somebody is able to help me, to solve this issue.
Thanks and Regards
(sry for my bad english)
What version of stock Rom was it on the tablet when you flashed cwm and which version cwm did you flash
We recommended the latest Asus firmware and the latest working recovery is 6.0.4.7

Hey! My version was the official 4.3 Update WW_10_26_1_18.
I wanted to install the Asus Stock Modded Deodexd Rom (10.26.1.18 JB 4.3) for root.
After I used this tutorial droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=3223 for installing cwm, my device started to begin his loop. I am not able to Use Vol- / power! I also waited for several minutes
What happens if you just keep holding vol- and power without releasing
Sent from my Note II using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
All you have to do is power and vol +/- then flash back the stock recovery via fastboot.
Then wipe. Then boot in as normal (you will have to re-set up). If wipe does not restore you, grab 10.26.1.18 for your SKU from asus , rename the .zip inside to T4_SDUPATE, place on an microsd, pop it in, enter boot loader and enter RCK. Then it will flash it.
You should fastboot boot to ensure you are ok before permanent flashing, when putting a new recovery on.
Your bootloader must be on 10.26.1.18 to use anything on DB.
The Problem is, i have no fastboot connection anymore! The loop is going and going, vol- / pow does not work! It is still looping the asus logo and that's it!

You have to be fast. When.the screen goes black hold vol +/- (hold them both) and it will enter fastboot when it cycles since I doubt u can fully power off in that state. Leave USB plugged in.
also, reply back with how exactly you flashed recovery (the command). did you do a fastboot flash recovery recovery.img or a fastboot flash boot recovery.img?

that's a good question. I mean, i did exactly what is written in that post from droidbasement.
Then you should have no issue as long as you are on the appropriate boot loader. Hundreds if not thousands of users are using it at this point.
Power and hitting both vol + and - at same time should get it back in to fastboot. Please make sure you time it right.
Good luck.

Asus help is needed
Hello ASUS !!!
You have to HELP us, in order to keep your consumer with you. Other vice people will start to think that your ASUS brand is not a trustful brand anymore. Using such tricks as providing consumer with possibility to open a "Pandora's box" with bootloader unlock, and after you pushing consumer to pay about 300 $ for "motherboard replacing".
Following such kind of policy you will collect some money but definitely you will loose much more.
Sincerely,
Stream1313
PS: I was started to use the "unlock" etc not because I do not have other business t do but because of the serious problem in your DEFAULT STOCK software.
To: Moderator - please do not delete this post, hopefully some ASUS people will read it.

How about ADB while it is looping?
You will have to provide more info: What do you have installed?

APX is useless at this point as there is no way use nvflash on the Tegra4 yet.

no, no chance to get into fastboot or using adb. the only thing that works is APX after pressing volume+ for about 10sec.
what did I do: I tried to install clockworkmod recovery and flashed recovery.img from fastboot. Then I restarted my device. I was sure I did every OTA-update because I checked almost every day for new updates. BUT starting up the tablet I saw my bootloader wasn't 10.26.1.18 (required for CWM). So I went to ASUS-website and downloaded WW_epaduser_10_26_1_18_UpdateLauncher and tried to update. But this did not work. So I rebooted pressing power and volume- ... then wiped data or whatever the third option was ... after that my looping started.
I've copied T4_SDUPDATE to my microSD and tried almost everything... charging, apx and looping is the only things that work at this moment
Sorry mate, but you hardbricked your tablet.
You installed a recovery that is incompatible with your bootloader, which is not good but fixable.
Then you used 'Wipe Data' from the bootloader which is pretty much a recipe for disaster with an incompatible recovery installed.
With no fastboot or adb access there is no way to get it back.
[emoji24]
so nothing I could do over APX, microSD and the 3 buttons? no chance, even in future?

I9305 stuck boot volume rocker broken

Hi,
I need some help with my smartphone, is stuck at boot.
With a usb jig i can enter in download mode and flash with odin. I flashed many roms and this always happend.
I cant enter in recovery because the volume rocker not work and adb do not recognize MTP usb drivers.
How can i found a solution for this?
thank you
If it stucks in bootloop after flashing a stock ROM via Odin , you will need to wipe data partition.
But I would suggest replacing your volume rocker to be able to enter recovery mode because it seems like the easiest way (Not 100% sure it's the easiest way tho)
Hey, thank you for your replay.
I already changed my volume rocker and it seems to not work. I think is board problem.
Can i use a keyboard with otg to enter in recovery mode?
Use an app that let's you boot straight to recovery (there's alot)
But first I suggest flashing TWRP as you can't use CWM if you have a broken volume button

Stuck on boot on all roms you flashed? Had this problem once, you must clean the dalvik cache prior to booting for the 1st time, but since adb and volume rocker doesn't work for you I'm afraid you gotta take another visit to the store
Id like to know wich is the volume ways and resitors on board, may be i can fix this.
Edit:
When i perform a ctrl+alt+del with keyboard by otg the phones reboot like normal. There are any way to use the keyboard to access recovery?
And maybe another solution is, install a rom via odin with adb activated but i didnt found any one.
thank you

twrp works fine but won't start via vol+power

Hi, as the title says, i can't boot to twrp when the phone is powered off. It will ignore what i push and just boot into cyanogenmod.
It used to work at some point, also i can get to twrp if i restart via the twrp app.
I should probably just reflash it?
If I'd somehow lock me from the os while experimenting, i could still run twrp via fastboot in ?
kind regards!

power+vol- to enter recovery.
