[Q] No screen after lcd replcement (White screen+noise) - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey
I own an htc one m7 (801n)
After my lcd was broken i have bought an original lcd+digitizer (comes together as one piece) from etradesuppy
I have connected the the battery & the charging port to the main board and then the lcd- connected a usb cable so the screen will come up..,.
All i can see is a white screen with noise (like tv used to have...)
I found a photo on the internet, it looks the same!!

Send the phone to HTC for proper repair

Agreed. Send it back to HTC. They most likely just get cheap Chinese parts and resell them.

You can buy parts that are subpar from China left and right. They are not obligated to be truthful to the buyers if they are OG parts or not. This is what happens with alot of on line sellers. They buy these parts from so called Good dealers and then when they sell them Custormers have issues. It happens all the time. They can even cause more harm. Send it back to HTC

But the screen i 've bought is original ... (from etradesupply)

Thats the thing is you can never be sure that it is. All you know is what they tell you. Many sites say OG parts and they are not. Send it back.

Here in Israel the disturber of HTC wants 300$ for a new display. for around 320$ i can get a used device.
I wonder how much HTC UK charge for that. I'll send them an email, thank you.

Good luck. That goes to show that if the official wants that much for the display, anything that is less them say half the price is most likely not official parts. You have to be careful. Hell you can get a used one in swappa for like 150

It is very likely that problem is coming from an improper connection with the LCD flex cable and the FPC connector on the main motherboard. I had it happen before when I didn't fully connect the cable back when I was putting the phone together. Unless, otherwise the flex cable is damaged or has some other issue.
Your options are to
open the phone and inspect it yourself, you can do it for free and this keeps your costs to a minimum. You need to be careful or you risk damaging your back cover.
send it to a local repair shop to have a look (hopefully you can find someone trustworthy)
send it to HTC
I circled the location of the LCD connection on the main logic board.

I really hope it would work, if not i'll sent it to HTC (i still have warranty who knows maybe they'll not charge for the repair)
Once i'll get the connector update you guys if it did work
Thanks

usb terminal broken

i dont know when it happened but i noticed it today when my car charger stopped working. i looked at the usb port on the phone and noticed the usb terminal was partially bent downward. the phone still charges with the regular charger and still syncs, so until it completely stops working ill just leave it. PPCtechs will fix it for $80. htc told me that most likely it wont be covered under warranty but they need to look at it first to determine if i broke it. I asked the rep how do they determine that. At that point i realized it was a bunch of BS. he said the charge to repair is $305. and even if its not covered and i decide to let PPCtechs fix it, i still have to pay a $28 dollar inspection fee.
Shame, mine broke like that too but it was within a few days of getting it so T-Mobile changed the handset.
It really shouldn't be possible to break the USB connector. I know we should exercise care (and I do now!) but it's a critical point of failure. I still don't know how I broke mine.

Mine is bent a tad but still syncs fine. If you google you get thousands reporting this, but HTC doesn't fix it in new models. Cheap component. If it breaks on me I'll be getting another windows smartphone by a different mfr.
As nice as the HTC products are, such a critical component is made as poor as can be. If that point fails, you can't charge your phone or perform sync functions. This means a bricked device. What gives?
yea im already looking for a replacement device. my last nokia had a rare joystick failure. im not even sure what to get next. i waited way too long for this phone to release and paid top dollar to have it when it first came out. now i finally have my phone set up perfect and its broken.
Same thing here... hasn't broken yet but it's slightly bent on on the right side of the mini usb on the phone.
here is the direct number to htc. 425-861-9174. once i find the right person to talk to i give the ext. maybe if more than one person callls the same person at htc they will give in.

Hey, that's the exact same for me. The right side is slightly sloped down.
If someone does get a extension I'll be sure to call!
well that is strange that all 3 of us have it broken the same exact way . at this point it looks like a manufacture issue. ill get a direct extension tomorrow. and ill talk to my lawyer on friday.
Cant Aim
I am also on my way to a Broken USB. I know how my USB broke and it was pretty dumb. I have been in a dark place many times and pushed the stylus in the port (upper right corner). I have moved it back into place and put a little Super Glue in there. I don’t think this will last. So I was just wondering if the USB problems everyone is having could be caused from the same. I am looking for a cover to prevent this from happening again and if anyone knows of one please let me know. DUHHHHHHH!
If anyone ends up with a broken usb port and wants to sell the phone please PM me...I know someone that can fix it (had to have it fixed on my mda) and would like to upgrade my old phone.

I found this place that does HTC repairs. Positive feedback from people on other forums.
http://pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~HTC_Kaiser-71~area~repairs.htm
Since I paid $400 for my phone, worth the $60 pricetag to have this repaired if it breaks. Just thought others would like to know if they ever meet the cold reality.
In my book it is poor business practice to design core components cheaply , so that it will inflate sales when failures occur. (So that you or your carrier will have to eat the cost when a USB port breaks. Pure profit for HTC)
Definitely makes me angry the port is so cheaply made. Of all things on a phone to be cheaply made. Make the PTT button we never use cheap, make the camera cheap (since it's not amazing anyway), make anything cheap BUT the USB port.
The USB port is the central way to charge the phone, apply updates, sync it, it's the lifeblood of the phone. Without it, the phone is trash unless repaired. But thats probably the whole point.
Make cheap USB port
Breaks
Carrier foots cost for buying replacement phone for customer. (Or customer foots cost)
PROFIT FOR HTC!
Wow... I thought it was just me. Here's a pic of mine, I think it shows it pretty well. Like I said before, it's still works fine... doesn't look very pretty though. I've been babying my Tilt and haven't had any maltreatment. This is just from normal wear and tear...

Amazing.
Looks like a picture of my tilt with the USB bent in the exact same way.
A coworker checked out my new phone the second day I got it and said "You already bent your USB?" and I had to b.s. and say "No the plug is designed that way" he was like "ahh.... thats not right."
HTC oughta fixit!
this is why the right side is bent on usb port

..cuz you must have accidentally poked the stylus in the usb port while meaning to poke into the reset hole. I've had this happen a couple of nights ago while driving where I had to reset the device and in the dark I pushed the stylus in the usb port a couple of times instead of the reset one.. I only realized this when I synced the device next and found it to not recognize it and also not charge via either the computer or wall charger. So, I looked at the usb port and there it was.. slightly bent down from the right edge of the inner pins.
Whether its flimsy or not (which I totally agree that it is after my gentle inserting of the stylus just a couple of times) HTC should have given a rubber/soft cover for the port. Would make a lot of difference.
I managed to fix mine for now though.

You are probably right... don't remember doing this but it sounds like the likely cause.
sorry to hear that a few people are quick to blame themselves. the only place i accidentally put my stylus is between the keyboard and the display. i did that twice. i rarely use the stylus and unike others i would have remebered it. mine does look exactly like the one in the pic. in another forum i was told it was designed to be bent? anyway bad design imho and sice im not the only one thbks should be fixed. i build and sell 500-700 thousand dollar homes. when someone is unhappy i sometimes have to bite the bullet and take it out of my pocket. its called good business.
anyone get theirs fixed yet? now none of my charge and sync cable works. The only cable that works is the original charger and the original sync cable.im sure i will have to get this repaired soon. i have called HTC corporate but nothing so far.
fixed mine..
I had the same thing happen to mine after 2 weeks of ownership. I took it to a ATT dealer and he tried a different charger and nothing worked. He said its a dead USB port and to exchange it. Mine looked that picture above as well.. I ended up fixing it by taking a flat edge butter knife and gently straightening it out so it was flat again. I plugged it in and bingo worked like new. I can't believe that these ports are so sensitive.
the usb port on my 8125 broke a long time ago and i just went to a repair shop.. he fixed it with a brand new one in about 20 min and charged me 35 bucks.

NOOOO! screen broke.. = (

i took my phone out of my pocket today and the screen was white with a big line going from the bottom right to mid left. i hadnt done anything at all, i hadnt hit it or anything, im not entirely sure how this could have happened, but 1 week ago i dropped it about 1 foot to the pavement, and it hit one of the corners. i think this may have something to do with it...when it fell it might have created a small crack that grew and grew, and now got big enough stuff leaked and it broke.
i read on the forum about people who seriously did nothing, they could have just chanrged it and it broke..
this sucks, anyone know where i can get a replacement screen?

Sell your phone on Ebay, Get what you can from it, Buy another TILT. A replacement screen is over 150 i believe.

try that. its about 80 total with shipping included. not as much as 150.
hey guys thanks for the quick replies, but i just got off the phone with a customer support person, they're sending me another tilt for free! then i send my tilt to them.

Why does that make me nervous? If you talked to warranty repair then you're going to have a big bill next month because they will charge you $450 - $500 once they receive your phone with PHYSICAL DAMAGE.

Seriously you'd be better off contacting PocketPC Techs and paying a couple of hundred (or less) to replace the screen.
Even better, if you're comfortable replacing your screen yourself, check eBay I've seen the screen for under $100!
at&t Warranty will consider that screen as "Out of Warranty"...

Once you've sent your broken phone to at&t Warranty you're pretty much done for. When you ordered the replacement they have a script that is read to you. You basically agree that there is no physical damage to the device and if they find physical damage then you agree to be charged full replacement price (read no upgrade discount) which is $450 - $500.
They also would have told you that once they receive your device there is no way that it can be returned to you.
You are basically giving up your Tilt for free and paying even more for a refurbished replacement than they charge in the stores for a brand new one.
I seriously recommend you look at the alternatives I've mentioned as your warranty is already scrapped by the physical damage.
So what Kyphur is saying - DON'T OPEN THE BOX THEY SEND YOU, DON'T SEND THEM YOURS. CALL THEM BACK AND SHIP THEIRS BACK TO THEM UNOPENED!
No no no...Refusal of shipment/freight is always your best bet with any such issue.

Another victim. I had the same thing with my Vario 3. But it happened after 4 days getting the phone :') I sent it back and it costed me 130 euro. I thought it would be like 300 or so. Maybe they won't overcharge you.
Yeah, I second that the best option is to refuse the shipment. That way you won't even have to pay shipping costs for sending it back. I'm also sure warranty will not cover your problem as it can't really be said that it happened because of manufacturing error or out of proper every-day usage. But who knows? I am not AT&T, not even on AT&T

but this broken screen thing is such a common problem... let me quote what i said in another thread:
mikeeey said:
i talked to the guy who sold me my tilt today. I told him about my broken screen, how it just broke for no reason. he told me this is a common problem, and 6 people have came to just him about this problem. he says the crystals in the screen heat up and just break.
well is this is bad. but can it be good? if it is common then perhaps AT&T will recognize this and exchange for a new tilt will not cost what buying a brand new one is. however if they dont recognize this as a common problem then stay away from the Tilt.
if 6 people have came to him about it, how many other people do you think came in and talked to other employees besides him? then how many people do you think went to other AT&T stores in my city about this problem? then add all the stores outside my city, outside my state...we got a LOT of broken tilt screens...

so im hoping htc/at&t will realize many people break their screens.
Yeah... if you get your phone back, or for others, i just want to reiterate that you can get a screen on ebay for $70 or so, and it apparently is very easy to replace (if it's an AT&T Tilt, and not a true Kaiser with the front facing camera). It's a really good deal.
Here's a link to just one of the ebay auctions where you can find a screen for it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-For-HTC-P44...4154123QQihZ020QQcategoryZ41343QQcmdZViewItem
these people will do the whole repair for you for $169:
http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main.asp?unit=HTC_Kaiser-971&area=repairs&item=HTC-LCD05
here's someone's opinion on how replacing the screen went for them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1846059#post1846059 (read post #6)
And i think you said that since you didn't *do* anything to it, it's not physical damage...? Yeah, i seriously doubt that. You may have accidentally put it with the screen outward in your pocket once and leaned against something, that's what happened to me, but screens don't just break on their own, and even if somehow it did, AT&T likely won't believe it...

ORA USB Cradle (Thoughts?)

Im considering buying this cradle
http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=194466
As I have a £15 voucher to spend at expansys and I thought it would be useful and nice to get a cradle. I dont want to spend much over the free £15 and so this one came to my attention It looks quite nice, I did have one thought though, how will it fair when flashing ect.. does it act just like a usb cable or will it have problems going through the flashing process?
Also I want to get some peoples opinions on it,
Thanks in advance

Looks identical to the one I bought from Clove the other day. Only difference is that yours seems able to charge a spare battery as well.
The stand has a low centre of gravity and appears robust. The plastic guard at the back helps locate the device onto the connector AND hold the device securely in place.
On mine you can sync and charge at the same time provided you use the charging device that should come with the stand.
Is this enough detail for you or do you want more?

It connects via the micro usb and the 3.5mm headphone socket. There is a 3.5mm socket on the back so that you can put it through external speakers. The only downside is that if you dont connect it to external speakers then you dont hear the phone if call or message comes in as it thinks its connected to a headset (not a big problem for me as i ignore most until im ready to speak or reply to them). It holds my HD2 solidly .

Ahh thanks for the response Funny, I can get THAT one two at expansys, it looks the same from the picture http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=194343 So it would cost me £20 aswell lol. Its just that is pushing it a bit price wise (I like to hoard money lol)
@ [*],
Not used my version of the stand for anything else yet other than charging the device and syncing/file transfer routines which it does well. Can't see why running in bootloader mode should be a problem but I have not tried it yet.
As I said mine is the one from Clove not the one you are on about; however, apart from the spare battery slot, they look very very similar.
Why don't you just order it and give it a try. If you don't like it then send it back under the 7 day distance selling rules and get your money back (I am assuming you live in the UK).

Why don't you just order it and give it a try. If you don't like it then send it back under the 7 day distance selling rules and get your money back (I am assuming you live in the UK).

Yeah maybe your right, I should just go for it, I will probably go for that cheaper one, (the first one I posted) as if you look at the other one a couple of posts up, it would cost me £20 instead of £10 (with vouchers applied) and the only difference appears to be (havent fully read through it yet) the speaker? which isnt a big deal to me.
And I would appreciate if you could test the bootloader/flashing, of course your not obliged to as I know its a pain, but I would really appreciate it (maybe flash a radio?)
And yeah, UK

[Q] Is it worth it to fix this?

A friend of a friend mine gave me a HTC HD7 for T-Mobile, because, well... It's trashed. He was going to just throw it away, but I took it figuring maybe I could get it up and running. Let me just say, it's in bad shape. (That's being nice.)
More photos are Here
The phone powers on, camera works, reads sims, both hardware buttons work. ...Everything else is pretty much trash.
I know the LCD/Digitizer is fused together, kind of like the HD2. So I'd buy a full LCD/Digitizer assembly for about 70 on eBay.
I'm not too concerned about the midframe, Maybe eventually replace it. They are going for about 30 on eBay.
Am I wrong that all I would need at minimum is a new LCD/Digitizer assembly, and if I wanted to get it in pristine condition a midframe?
so, would be spending nearly $150 to repair plus your time?
i don't know if it would be worth it.
they are going for about $200 - $300 used on ebay.
so, up to you if your time and money is worth it.

...unless you insure it, leave it for a bit, then claim...?
Not quite fixing it up, but would get you a replacement for a lot cheaper?
Tmousa charges a 130.00 copay for the insurance to replace it...

If I were the original purchaser, and the phone had been insured. Neither of these are the case.
Yeah it would cost relatively too much to replace the digitizer / LCD, and I understand it's a very difficult procedure anyway.
If I were you I would attach this to a set of speakers or a HiFi somewhere and configure it as a DLNA receiver (if you stream music this way in your home) or at the very least have it as a touchscreen WiFi radio / media player using HTC Connected Media, Mixtapes, 8tracks, TuneIn Radio, Lastfm or whatever from the Marketplace. That would be pretty cool. I have a pair of Samsung bluetooth speakers at home and it connects great ot my HD7. It comes with a remote so I never have to get the phone out of my pocket to change the track or volume. When my HD7 is finally retired, it's sole prupose will probably be this.
EDIT: of course the screen would need to be at least sort-of working for this; can't tell if it is or not
The screen is working. But, I'm going with a full display replacement. It's a lot easier that way... and I can sell the working display to recoup some of the cost. As far as the housing, That doesn't have to be done immediately.
The way I figure it now after posting here... I didn't pay anything for the phone, and there's nothing worth upgrading to on T-Mobile at the moment for a 2yr contract & full price data (I'm on $5 web2go) ... So, I'm going to go ahead also and drop my postpaid T-Mobile line. Going to get the new $30/mo Monthly4g plan and use the HD7 on it for a year or so... Maybe pick up the Radar 4g when it can be had for 100-150 or so at that time.
I just replaced the digitizer on an HD7 and a heat gun and a old gift card made the swap very easy. For around $60 and some time you can have that phone looking new, if all it needs is a digitizer and housing.
Here is a pic of the HD7 I did a few days ago:

good job mate

cracked back resolved (uk)

just a quick note to say that after a week away with the sony repair centre in the uk i have got my z3 compact back.
i suffered from the back glass getting a crack from one corner to the opposite one without any bangs or drops.i had the device from new for 6 days.
sony have repaired the device under warranty without cost.
the only cost i had was £8 special delivery with royal mail to send it in.
i know others have reported getting their devices back without the cable and plug they had to send in but this was not the case for me.
just wanted to share my experience if anybody else has this problem, although i think it is fairly rare and hopefully only happens on early models.
cheers

Hi, my girlfriend has had the same thing happen to her 7 day old Z3 Compact. No signs of any sort of dropping or misuse, just a diagonal crack on the back case has appeared. Can I ask please, as you're in the UK too, how did you go about reporting/sorting this out? Straight to Sony or via your network provider? Did you contact them face-to-face, phone or email?
Any help will be appreciated as I feel a bit guilty by recommending she got this phone and getting her away from her usual iPhone.

hi mate, my phone is a unlocked model that i purchased on my own so i had to deal with sony direct.
i registered a xperia account and linked my phone to it to get the years warranty.then i raised a repair through this.they sent me the details of where to send it freepost. you will need your own packaging they supply nothing, also they suggest just dropping it in the post but i used royal mail special delivery.from then on the whole communication from them was awful.they say you can track the whole process and its updated all the time.this is bull .i had to contact them to get them to even acknowledge they even go my phone.i had no update on the whole process of them looking and repairing the device.it was repaired free of charge and the whole process was 1 week door to door.it came back via royal mail also.i was pleased with this of course but they never followed up with what may have caused the problem to start with.
do you have any ideas?
about 2 days before my crack appeared i shot about 2 mins of 4k video and the device got very warm.it was only put back in my pocket where it would have stayed until cooled.
let me know how your repair goes.
best of luck
I have yet to find out if the warranty will cover this. Surprised me one morning, 1 long diagonal crack on the back of my Z3 Compact.

Oh mate sorry to hear that. Providing there is nothing on it to make it appear it could have been dropped then you'll be fine.

The rear panel of mine cracked from side to side under the Sony logo shortly after filming in 4k (it shut down due to overheating). To be fair, it cracked when I walked into the corner of a table with the phone in my pocket (screen inwards - old habits...). There were other firmware issues as well but the rear panel was the one that caused me most concern as it completely killed any semblance of water-resistance. Sony repaired and returned in about a week at no cost to me other that postage (see below). I would agree that their repair tracking facility is cack - when they sent me an email to say it was on its way back, they sent the wrong tracking code.
Mine is an O2 device but like you it was registered with them and I just raised a ticket online - I also paid for Next Day Special as I wasn't sticking it in the post without insurance. I never sent my charger as that wasn't the issue (and I didn't want to lose it).
