I think I have the weirdest problem with my Sensation XL.
It works fine and sometimes, when I unlock it, the touch screen goes into super frenzy mode and starts doing things on its own. When it's stuck in that mode, I cannot use it, and it clicks buttons around randomly and very fast.
I have seen it open my messages, swipe a long gibberish text and send it (!) or this morning it just opened contacts and deleted one!
I am pretty sure it's all in random because on the keyboard I can see it swiping very randomly around the screen and in a very fast speed.
What on earth is this and how do I stop it? It almost looks like a virus or some sort of spyware but I checked and see nothing malicious installed.
The phone is about 8 months old and is not rooted. Latest firmware installed.(4.0.3 Android version).
The crazy behaviour did not coincide with any updates in software. Just started 3 weeks ago randomly and happened maybe 5 times till now.
The only way to stop your phone going mad and doing something you don't want it to do is to quickly rip the battery off, because you are unable to restart it from the touch screen.
It only happens after you unlock it, not while you're using it and I noticed it happens after a long period of inactivity.
Has anyone had that? Any help is very appreciated!
Thank you

Lock the screen and open it again. If this doesn't stop it could be a Hardware problem
I also had some problems like this on the original firmware, but rarely, it got fixed when i flashed Incredibly Cool Sense v3. You should lock the screen not to rip the battery off, as it's faster and it should work

I don't think it's a hardware issue cause the phone works well most of the time. If it was hardware the problem would be permanent, not intermittent and especially so occasional.
Must be something software related, I did add a lot of games to the phone recently but the problem happens even when these processes aren't running in the background which is puzzling.
Locking and unlocking the screen postpones the problem, it doesn't solve it. As soon as the screen is unlocked, it immediately goes crazy again.
I can only solve it by pulling the battery out, and FAST, before it sends crazy messages to my contacts

Welcome to the club. I had that same issue. But after a hard reset everything is fine with mine.
I assume that there was an app causing all that. If after a hard reset still does that you should send it for repair
If you have a screen protector its can be a main reason for this. To stop this behavior you can use power button and wake up it again. Some htc devices have the problem with multi touch screen
Issues of production. Clear the screen products with some alcohol and see than.

I don't have a screen protector actually and the screen is usually clean.
Must be some app, I wonder there was some way to find out which without having to do a hard reset and lose everything

You can't! There is no way you can find out which one is causing that. Maybe it's some update from something that is causing the freezing.
Last night i did notice something else though. My battery was almost empty and i took my gf charger. She has S2 and after i charged my phone it has started to act strange......... Even today after i pluged the phone to install something from the PC it didn't even notice that i have connected it to the PC. Took me about 20 min in/out to get it running I clean the usb slot every week so it is not a dirt issue....
it happens with me when there's water on the screen

Be careful from contiouas pressure on screen it may drive it to behave strangely .
Try to use lock code before putting the phone into pocket

Definitely on to something.
It has happened a few times when it was drizzling and there were tiny droplets on the screen (not proper rain).
It started acting up when I was swiping the screen against the tiny droplets. After locking it, it would stop responding...
Most of the times I find it either non reponsive or acting weird after I take it out of my back pocket and try to unlock it.
Maybe being in my pocket, even locked, affects it somehow.
Is it easy to put another Rom? Do I lose all my apps?

Yes you will lose all your apps.
Yes I have the same behaviour, its usually moisture from my hand, greasy buildup, water droplets and or being in my pocket the pressure on the screen makes it act up too, wouldnr worry bout it, not every screen design can be perfect ; )

sorry to bump an old thread.
I have this problem on a bashed up screen. however... I don't think it can be hardware because if I hard reset its then OK on the next boot...
we need to learn more about touchscreens - how are they calibrated? I think it is reset on boot and also on each lock
Its the LCD ribbon touching the metal housing, short circuiting the screen, easy fix with a piece of tape over the ribbon
Edit
Also, once the phone heats up resistance builds up with it causing the issue

Hi, I bought a Motorola Droid 4 (Verizon Wireless) on eBay and I just got it yesterday. I also upgraded the firmware to 98.72.18.XT894.Verizon.en.US. I'm not sure if the touch screen is bad because of the software update or because I bought a defective used Droid 4 from a dishonest seller. I didn't test the screen before updating to Jelly Bean.
My problem only occurs in the home screen and app drawer. There seems to be two types of swiping interfaces. One is like scrolling (the phone book, for example) and the other is the "bouncy" pages found in most launcher home screens and app drawers. When I scroll my phone book or navigate a webpage in Chrome, screen scrolls perfectly. However, when I slide left and right in the home screen (or drawer) it slides partially and snaps back to the original page. Most of the time I swipe to right but I move to the left screen instead of the right. This problem never happens with my Droid 3.
A temporary (but not permanent) solution is that I have to swipe right and pause for a millisecond while still pressing on the screen, and then I have to slide right one more time and release my finger.
I notice that the reason why the Droid 4 go left when I swipe right is because the Droid 4 is so sensitive that when I swipe an inch right but 1/8 of an inch left (at the very end) it registers the last movement so that the screen moves left. It is as if the phone ignores the majority of the gesture and only registers the last portion of the gesture. Don't be confused, the majority of the gesture is recognize by the phone because I see screen moving along with my finger but the phone only registers the last part as the "confirmation" to change screen. If I swipe really slowly following the steps from the temporary solution above, it works. But I never had to do this with the Droid 3 or G2 or Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
So does anyone notice this problem? Does anyone notice that their Droid 3 swipes accurately 100% of the time while their Jelly Bean Droid 4 often swipes inaccurately? Should I return my Droid 4? What is going on? Is there a permanent fix? Can someone please verify whether or not this is an isolated issue? In other words, the problem is a bad touch screen (which doesn't make sense to me because everything else works perfectly) or the firmware (which means everyone experiences the same issue).
Also can someone verify to me that their pinch to zoom does not work when they use the Dolphin Mini browser?
Go into your developer options and check pointer location just to get a better understanding of what's going on when trying to swipe... is the phone on charge when this occurs? The touch is vary erratic when on a non OEM charger... there may be some static interference going on... if you haven't I would FDR and clear cache partition from the recovery menu... test the home screen/drawer... test your touches with developer options... try safe mode... test the touches... only time I have noticed this is while on a charger not putting out the OEM 5.1v 850mA...

(1) Developer options was the first thing I tried when I notice the problem. The lines and dots were as accurate as my finger placement and gesture.
(2) The phone was on charge and wasn't on charge. The problem occurred under both conditions.
(3) I was using an OEM charger purchased from Verizon Wireless.
(4) Static interference??? I get shocked a lot when I touch things, but the problem doesn't occur on my D3 when I touch it. IDK what static interference is or how to fix it.
(5) FDR? You mean factory data reset? clear cache? I don't want to resort to this. Won't I have to reinstall everything and re-do all of my settings? I did a hard reset before the update but not after it. And now I don't want to reset again without knowing the cause of the problem.
(6) Safe mode and test the touches? How do I do safe mode? Test the touches is a bit vague.

This phone has a captivate touchscreen... As the human body is also an electrical conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the screen's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. This is how it responds to our touch I would think the d4 screen would be more sensitive then the d3 that's why I say static interference... safe mode by hold power when you get screen pop long press power off when you get screen pop press OK... once in safe mode see if it still does it... if it does then its not third party app interference... if it doesn't then FDR and add apps one by one to see which app is the issue... personally I would just FDR and wipe internal storage clear cache partition ( in the stock recovery there an option for that) and try with no SD card... if it still did it I would see if it did it with a stylus

I am having doubts about the FDR. After going to the Verizon Wireless store, I tested the Motorola Razr phones and they all had the same problem with the Droid 4. They all use Jelly Bean. I also tried scrolling with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The Note 2 (didn't check which firmware) was as fluid and accurate as the Droid 3.
Am I crazy or is everyone not able to notice the touch issues with the Droid 4?
its the static I tried to find the link for you with no luck... months back a guy had this issue also... I was going to suggest testing a VZW device if safe mode and FDR didn't work but that's what troubleshooting is...

I just tried Safe Mode, and scrolling seemed better. I don't have the scrolling/swiping issues as frequently after I uninstalled ADWLauncher EX.But then again, I never had that problem in the Droid 3, which I had the ADWLauncher EX installed on it. I still have the problem though. Whatever, I guess???
Droid 4 seems really to be very sensitive on touch. At the beginning I had the problem that when I tried to open a program from home screen (using Go Launcher Ex) I suddenly was on the next homescreen instead of having the programm opened. I was coming from Droid 1 and it took me 2 weeks to get used to it - but now after some month it happens just once a week to me.

I believe this touch issue that we are having is a design feature for the new Motorola Droid phones running JellyBean. I've gotten used to it but I think the D3 has a better touch screen.
I just want to update this very old thread to say that my Droid 4 no longer has that problem. I think it really was static that caused these issues. There hasn't been a single software update but over several months, the screen just got better.
Last night I picked up the Note 3 to replace my original Note i717. I’ve rooted it with designgears’ root. So I’m currently running into a few issues that I’m hoping some of you might have some suggestions on.
1) The note 1 had five icons per row in the home screen, now despite about a third more horizontal pixels, we have 4, and it looks like fewer vertically too. This needs to change. It sounds like there is no way to do this without hacking around...
Should this work? It's for the S3 though, and I worry that things may have changed since then.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221124
Solved, using modified T-Mo SecLauncher4.apk installed per: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46635711&postcount=26
2) On the note, it would show that I had text messages or missed calls on the lock screen, and I could swipe to unlock starting from those to go strait to the new message or missed calls. Now I see that I have messages, but I can't seem go directly to it like I could before. How can I get that feature back? From what I've seen so far, I liked the old lock screen better. I don't really know what it's doing with that top part of the lock screen - I may be missing some key insight here.
3) The notification bar is cluttered up with a keyboard icon, "select input method". How do I get rid of this? I know how to select a keyboard, thankyouverymuch.
Wanam/Xposed does it
4) WTF is my magazine? What does it do? Do I want it?
Samsung bloat, but said to cause problems when disabled.
5) How can I make it stop connecting to AT&T Wi-Fi "hotspots", without turning off Wi-Fi entirely? It automatically connects to them, using them instead of the perfectly good 4G signal. This would be fine if they worked, but unfortunately most of them have no connectivity behind them, so internet access just stops when in range if one with Wi-Fi enabled. I know I fixed this before in the note, but I forget how.
Settings -> Wifi -> Advanced, uncheck the obvious option
6) There is an eye in the notification bar. Sometimes it is white, other times it's dimmed. What is this conveying to me? Is this the samsung eye-tracking thing to make it not turn off the screen while looking at it? If so, does it only think i'm looking at it when the eye is white? If so, it's not doing a very good job, because i've seen the white eye only a couple of times for a few seconds at a times.
I was right, and it can be disabled, or Wanam can hide the notification
7) Has anyone had any luck removing the AT&T logo from the back cover without trashing the finish? Maybe acetone? What kind of plastic is it, anyway? It feels like polyethylene or polypropylene from the outside, but the inside feels like something harder than that, so I don’t know.
8) The stupid physical home button activates the screen! Is there a way to wipe the bottom of the screen with the phone on without accidentally unlocking it, short of carrying q-tips around to neatly clean around the stupid physical home button?
Wanam/Xposed can disable unlock on home.
New Question:
9) That really annoying bug where it gets stuck in EDGE mode is still here. If you try to use the internet at exactly the wrong time while leaving a dead-spot (happens a lot with subways in boston), your data connection gets stuck in EDGE, and stays there, potentially for a long time. Rebooting or toggling airplane mode fixes it... but isn't this a pain for everyone who lives around a subway system? How do others deal with this?
10) The package contained a small plastic baggie, containing a small tool made from a strip of metal, about 1 inch long, and an even smaller bag with 5 thin black rods about 3/4ths of an inch long. What are these?
Replacement S-Pen tips, and a tool for replacing them.
Thanks
I don't know all the answers but ill try
1)I think that's a DPI issue at least partially. Root it,install Xposed and the App Settings app.
2)go to settings, device, lock screen to enable lock screen widgets
3)not sure. Xposed might be your friend here
4)more Samsung bloatware. I don't use it.
5)I believe you can turn this off in the wifi settings

Probably not, but from what I've read, freezing it causes problems with email. One thing you can do is to go into the app, press menu, select settings, and uncheck the box that says "open using the home key." That will at least stop that annoyance.

Correct. I find this feature worthless and have disabled it on my various Galaxy devices.
(Questions not resolved highlighted in orange)
1) Thanks - I have Xposed + Wanam, but it doesn't seem that they allow me to change the number of icons in the grids. I'm studying the dimens.xml and integers.xml - Trying to figure out what everything there means. I think i'm gonna be able to get 6 decently sized vertical rows in... but I need to make sure I know what I'm doing, and don't screw something up.
There is a SecLauncher4.apk and SecLauncher4.odex in the /system/app directory - I've decompiled the .apk, and know how to recompile it - but I'm a little unsure of what the presence of the odex file means in terms of where to go from there.
2) The issue isn't that there's no widget, it's that the widget that's there sucks. Before (on the original note), I could in one motion swipe (in any direction) from the message icon or widget or whatever you'd call it on the lock screen, and land at the new message. Now it seems like I have to tap the messages notification and then swipe in the box beneath it, which requires considerably more dexterity to do with one hand than just swiping away from the widget like I could do before.
3) Wanam does it.
4) Got it! sounds worthless. Actually, might be possible to defang in SecLauncher4.apk - it's got a lot of options related to the magazine.
5) Thanks, got it.
6) Okay, cool. It actually seems to be better than useless, so I'm gonna leave it on for now (until it does something that pisses me off, at least). Wanam can hide the eye if I tell it to, which I probably will.
8) Wanam can fix this.
New Question:

Thanks, found info on using the T-Mo files on AT&T Note 3 - see link in OP.
Hello
Ive had numerous problems while i was on KK 4.4.2 .681 and .757 with freezeing phone, random reboots(usually once a day) and touch screen issues.
I have asked alot here and over at Sonys support forum and ppl began to point out that i could very well have a hardware problem. Although the problems i have had on KK wasnt that odd. Since ive read about others having theese problems.
But early monday morning i thought that hmm why not try what a dude here suggested. Wipe the phone completley with cache, dalvik cache and all that and flash the latest 4.3 firmware with JB. Hmm oki well i did that, and so far i havent had any reboots, or any freezes. Camera is QUICK and takes better pictures. At some point i thought the touch was acting weird but that could just be the app itself freaking out, it was only for a few seconds and after that everything was working like it should. Battery time is better aswell(although it goes down to 75% quite fast but after that its slooooow).
So do you still think i might have hardware issues ? I was about to ship my phone back to China but now it feels like it is pure software issues. And i have had big troubles with the retailer to accept this as a warranty matter since he belives its a software issue.
But then again, my phone aint operating good at all with KK 4.4.2
So far everything is fine with the phone, missing some stuff from KK but not the end of the world. But im still testing. If it will remain on without a freeze until the end of the week i could be quite certain that it is KK that ****s up my phone totally.
Please respond with thoughts.
Who told you to wipe your phone? ..lol..
Just my thoughts about touch screen, I replaced 2 days ago my "lucid" classic transparent screen protector with one Anti-Glare, which is not lucid glass like many but is rough and it influence a little little bit on the visualization of the screen, tiny, tiny thing but the touch screen is much much more responsive.
Classic issue with touch screen, unlock with patterns, with the lucid screen protector sometimes it skipped the touch and I had to try 2 times to unlock the phone if the phone was put on the table without hold it. With the new screen protector it not skip anything.
Sometime a stupid thing can be the issue.
Could be the screen protector, remember the first one I had was a antiglare, and as far as I remember I didn't have those issues then. Now I have ultraclear one. Could be that, you never know. I do have tempered glass one wich I haven't used.
Just before the phone actually froze for a few seconds just when I took a picture, but it came back with no reboot. And I got a msg on WhatsApp and messenger at the same time so that could be what was causing the lag this time. Hopefully
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Free mobile app
Still no reboot! Used camera alot and done all sorts of stuff.
And today I changed my screenprotector to see if that would rectify the touchscreen issue. I used a tempered glass screen protector. O my god how much better that protector feels! But still testing for any issues

Some updates.
No random reboots!
But two other odd things occurred and one of them is known.
1. Touchscreen went crazy, it didn't press what I wanted and so on. I noticed it actually swiped on the keyboard. Turned that function off and unistalled the app "Color notes". Touch screen bugs are known and Sony even admitted it so.
2. I couldn't send sms today, tried to several but got error. Data and so on still worked. Restarted the phone and then it worked again (might just be coincidence). Although I noticed that it at some point it had trouble sending data, took forever to get connection even though I had 3-4 pins reception. Also noticed when that sms bug occurred that it switched from 2 pins to full every time I opened the sms to send.
But still no reboots. These things maybe would trigger reboots with kitkat, I dunno.

I have it all the time, I mean not the touch screen going crazy but the swipe one on keyboard, it happen always when I click on the letter A on left side, it really piss me off.
I think I have to turn off the swipe thing too.
Ye I've read about ppl having issues like we do and they just turned it off and then it works. Sony said they would fix the touchscreen issues in updates but still not fixed.
Btw, have you noticed that the "swipe" to turn off the alarm clock is less sensitive? It takes some trys to swipe to turn it off. Although it is a good thing because it makes me pissed and I have to concentrate to turn it off wich makes me to get up Might be an intended "bug".

Yeah, they are very lazy to fix this issues but they are not to put on the market a "new" device and forgot about Z1.

Yes, Yes, I am glad that I am not alone. It was less sensitive even before I turned off the "keyboard swipe" thing. So not really know if it's related to that features, it shouldn't, but you confirmed a "bug" which was keeping me thinking. O Lord, I dream about a Z1 bugs free! (dream only)
might not be

Well that Alarm swipe might not be a bug actually, ive tried it back and forth and if you "lazy" swipe it fast like you would when it rings in the morning it wont turn off. But if you do apply pressure and swipe slow it will turn off. Not a huge problem for me since it actually help me getting out of bed

Of curse, it help me too, I get angry because of that so I have to leave my bed ..LOL..
The thing is, who know if it was meant to be like that? It was made with that purpose? Because if it isn't then it's a "bug".
So, wondering if anyone else is having this. It definitely seems to be software related, I just can't for the life of me figure out what installed app did this, but hoping someone has the same issue and will chime in here. At random, the top left where the menu button is in Google Play store, for example, will act like it's not taking my touch input. The same goes for where the Edge app/contacts is. I know it to be software because if I rotate the screen in Google Play, the menu button still doesn't work and it's in a different spot while rotated obviously, so not physical from what I can see/determine. I did a factory reset only a few weeks ago, after the last update (as I usually do) and it was fine then (and right after).

Ive had similar issues on OE2 stock.. it seemed the whole top half of the screen wouldnt recognize input and this waseven after reboots and hard resets..
It wasnt til i went back to a fresh install of a custom rom where i got it back.
I havent been able to determine a culprit outside of the software in general.
Yeah, I was sure it was software because if I pull the notification bar down and slide my finger past the "dead" area on the screen, it works fine. Also, the "dead" are moves with whether you are in portrait or landscape mode. What sucks is, my Edge bar seems to not work most of the time. Wish they'd fix this, I'm very certain it's not hardware.
Update: Think I found a fix. It's been a whole day without issues. Believe it or not, change the theme you are using (I was using default, hope you were too?). I switched to the free material theme I found in the store (I like it), and have had 0 touch issues since.
*Edit, well I had 2 good days, but the issue came back. Not as frequent, it seems, but can't nail down why it happened. I did a factory reset after this update, too.
