What's a good non root backup app - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I've literally only used titanium backup since the first eVo 4g and am looking for a way to backup data as well without root. I'll be getting the SD note 8 on Sprint and who knows how long till root if at all. So bye bye titanium backup. I'm not by any means a noob, just got banned from xda 2 yrs ago, lol, hence the low posts. I've never had any experience with other backups on android. The apks I can pull off my note 4 anytime, but it's the data in some apps that matters most.

Smart switch by Samsung is what replaces Kies and seems to do a great job, it backups all contacts, call log, text messages photos videos and a few other things. Also works good for transferring files to a new phone.

I use Helium. It's not free, but only costs a couple of dollars I think. It will backup most apps (but not all).

Yeah I was looking at that, some people said it didn't work and I was worried about that. Pics, texts and calls I'm not worried about, that stuff is easy to transfer but app data has always been most important and usually only with root. Thanks I'll give it a try.

Helium has worked for most of my apps before. Some apps need root to transfer or backup data.

Helium worked going from my Note 4 to my Note 7. Then from my returned Note 7 to the Note 7 they sent out to replace that for the battery issue. They from my Note 7 to my S7E it worked also. Helium would NOT work from my S7e to my S8+. I am not confident Helium will work right from my S8+ to my Note 8. But I hope it does, since without root and titanium there is no way to backup and transfer apps and data properly and transfer them to the new phone.

I'm going to put my Note 3 and Note 8 in a box and wait for baby Note 11 to be made...I just hope they like each other...

Helium is the only non root app I've found that will backup apps with data/settings. I rooted my note 7 and titanium failed to restore apps with settings for the first time since I've been using it, Helium worked great.

What about 'adb backup' command?

Not app data. If it doesn't transfer app data I'm not interested. Smart Switch can be great if it did that.

[Q] How to re-link my purchased APPs to ANDROID Market

I recently un-rooted my DROID BIONIC for when a replacement was necessary.
While rooted I had to re-run a STOCK Script/Utility to restore my connectivity issue with my BIONIC LAPDOCK ( ie I HAD no connectivity Webtop was blown away ).
That remedy restored WebTop capability to the LapDock, but now my ANDROID Market lists nothing when I select " My APPS " . If i search for them individually it acknowledges that I paid for them, but the list is <NULL> itself .
Do I have to re-root to re-link to the Market and if so, what do I run ?
Thanks in Advance !
I love my BIONIC ( even though I replaced 3 of them in 2 months ) When they work they work great !
Just download one of the paid apps, and download a free one. Your market should fix itself
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
This happened to me recently too and App Manager in the Rom Toolbox did the trick. It makes it possible to link to the market or break that link (root required).
Thanks for your input(s) .
ROM Toolbox Pro is one of my paid apps .Who knows, Its is likely that I severed the link(s) by my own hand ( and a heavy thumb ! ) by accident with that very tool . I will re-root and try that . I guess I have to manually search and download them individually before I can get the complete list back in MARKET . ( if I can remember ALL the APPS I paid for )
Thanks again !
There are a lot of threads all over the web about My Apps area being empty. It is across all phone platforms. It doesn't seem to strike too many and it seems to be a Google issue.
Good luck.

My market has been broken, even before I rooted, or changed from the stock ROM. Google said they were looking into it for the Bionic, as of now I have the latest market but it still failed to link. My theory is I update my apps before the market updates and after it has, that's when it brakes. Still no update from google on a fix. But with the new update from moto will try to let the market update first before downloading my paid apps maybe this time it won't break

This is actually what started it all for me. I used the Market Doctor accidentally and right after My Apps was empty. And it's only this account. I have four other Google accounts and the system apps show up just fine in those. It's only in my primary that I have an empty app page. I have tried the clear cache and force stop server method only to see my paid apps for a moment then it goes right back to nothing.
And I found myself a solution. While titanium backup wouldn't work to fix my issue it wild seem ROM toolbox has. Just install it (you have to buy it as the free version wont allow you to use the market fix) and select all apps in the market fixer. Run market fix and restart your phone. It may or may not work for you but its worth a shot. Good luck.

I switched to Eclipse v1.2RC1 from 1.1.1 and My Apps came back on its own.
I reinstalled and relinked with ROM Toolbox and made a Titanium ZIP file for good measure. Hopefully future "stable" releases will still have that functionality as I am liking the Eclipse "flavored" series very much
Even though technology will leapfrog I hope my BIONIC will serve me 'til my Verizon 2 year commitment extinguishs.
With the killer ROM devs that appear here on XDA I don't think I need worry !
Missing apps are a google issue
I have two bionics, a nook color rooted with CM7 and a Logitech Revue. I have had each of these devices with various ROMS, and various versions of Market/vending.apk. The earlier version of vending.apk will show my apps, however as soon as the phone updates itself to the latest vending.apk, the apps dissappear, redownloading them does not help. Also I have two other accounts linked to my Bionic, they show "some" of the downloaded apps. There has been no rhyme or reason. The other thing to not is when you try to search for my apps on earlier builds of vending.apk, it gives a server error, like if the servers have been changed since those versions.
What irritates me is that my kindle fire shows the apps on my account just fine. Just not on my bionic. By the way us everybody else running 3.4.4?

Not a single one of them shows up. Not even system apps. When I freeze the google framework they show up for a minute or two then are gone again. I had it working for a little while then bricked and had to redo everything. Unfortunately I lost it all.

Try clearing market data, then switch to a different account if you have one. Wait a few minutes then switch back.

I've had this problem since I bought the bionic in October. Never worked, ever. Tablet works OK. Even stopped working on my other phones. Went to google support and discovered it was a market bug, but no resolution. Two weeks ago...I factory reset my bionic for some reason and it worked. Just to confirm, did it again the next day. It worked again. And to be sure, I did it again before writing this.....so it suddenly started working after a factory reset...
Who knows....

So I haven't quit looking into what actually causes the market "My Apps" issue. While I do feel it truly is the database I have a slightly more detailed theory as to why it does it. However in order to test this theory I need to take a general poll.
How many of you discovered this issue after using some sort of Root tool (ie: Rom Toolbox, Root Tools, Titanium Backup)?
How many of you have accidentally or on purpose used the Market Fix that supplement these programs?
The reason I'm asking is semi obvious I suppose. While these programs can do great good it would appear that if not done correctly they can also do bad. Last night I decided to play with it a bit more and I Linked ALL system apps and user apps to the market. After a few minutes or a reboot I would get the error again.So I went ahead and broke all links again, deleted the .dbs file and started all over again. This time only doing system apps and user apps that I knew were updatable. This lead to the market functioning much better. However I'm not finished yet. I want to figure out what apps and programs trigger this. At this point in time most User apps are okay but I have found I have linked considerably less system apps to the market. What I would like to ideally do is narrow the list down to just a few apps that shouldn't be linked.
Also if anybody would be so kind as to copy and share their database file that would help tremendously. This file needs to be completely stock having NEVER used any of these programs to edit the market links. Sharing this could potentially help all Android users having this extremely annoying issue. If you would like to keep the amount of users who this down to just me you can PM me or even send it to me over Skype or some other messenger with a file share tool. Thank you all in advance.
For those of you currently having the issue I have posted a fix here: http://rootzwiki.com...market-my-apps/

I've always used Titanium Backup myself, but not out if any problems with MyBackup - it is just the first one I happened to use. Worth buying for automatic restore where you don't have to confirm each app restore.
However, I've read that Titanium Backup crashes when restoring apps on the TouchPad. Hopefully fixed soon but something to keep in mind.

I use antivirus free from creative apps on my TOUCHPAD, avg (free) on my cell. Didn't know they had a tablet version, thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.
I am running ClassicNerd ICS 0.0.4. TB Pro was my choice based on forum comments.
TB works pretty flawless for me. Just had to do a re-install of the rom (mybad, not a rom problem)
TB auto restore gave me back everything just as i had left it
Whether TB works is rom dependent, had to use.an older version when running a previous version of CN ICs.
For screening I use Outlook
Has a bunch of upgrade functions I let lapse andjust keep the background scanner
It had some good reviews and seems to be doing the job. Very light footprint.
Good luck
Use TB Pro here. Never tried MyBackup, so can't comment on that as I've been happy with TB.
Not running any antivirus.

Who else doesn't care about root?

Am I the only one who doesn't seem to care about root? The reason I've rooted and flashed previous devices was for better gaming & speed optimization, battery life and the experience of change & customization; of course.
However, as odd as it seems to say I have went weeks now not even thinking of root or custom roms on this device.
TouchWiz is faster than ever, gaming is faster than ever (the CPU and GPU speak for themselves..), and everything's polished. The battery is superb! I dont even charge my S5 somedays with moderate gaming.. All I did was a few standard TW tweaks.. disabled animations in DM and threw on Nova launcher.
Next time around I will go with an unlocked phone (probably the next flagship Google phone), but for now I really enjoy the stock and untampered version of this phone.

Titanium backup is useless for me, all I ever backup is photos and that's easily done with my Google account. I have no reasons to greenify on this phone, no reason to debloat (doesn't slow my phone down), all I miss is xposed and rom toolbox, but even those aren't much to me anymore. I have my nexus 7 (2013) for my AOSP needs I actually enjoy TW on my phone.. weird, I know.

I care very much about it since Samsung decided to disable so many things. The ability for 3rd party file managers to fly from internal to external memory (or from a cloud to external, which is what I really want), lock screen widgets, the lack of available memory--they list goes on the more I use this phone.

Actually those are Google limitations brought on by KitKat, not Samsung limitations. KitKat has blocked the 3rd party write ability to SD cards.

Partially. My S3 is my work phone, and if Samsung ever gets around to releasing the 32GB version instead of futzing around with colors, I'll likely pull the trigger on the S5. My employer will be implementing AirWatch soon and cutting off sync to rooted phones, so the lack of root will mean less to me.
I will hate to give up, though Titanium Backup - both for its ability to backup and freeze apps; Greenify - to try tame misbehaved apps; my S3 gets the world's worst battery life, Bettery Batter Stats - to try to diagnose said awful battery life, and Directory Bind - to work around some of the limits of the 16GB space on my G3.
I'd like to be able to delete instead of freeze worthless Samsung apps when Samsung shuts their services down and AT&T apps that I will never, ever, ever use.
Give me a way to backup my phone, safely uninstall non-core functionality, and make my battery suck less, and I can live without root.
I also don't care about root, for myself, on my primary device.
I'd rather the added stability and security from knowing the various apps, and myself, are locked out of ranges of potentially harmful behavior. For me, for my phone, it's no. 1 a tool that I needs to be reliable.
Way far and gone in 3rd place would be something that needs root.
Like other's stated, my data/content is backed up separately, and google play has my back on the apps, so I don't need any other backup solution.
Root would be nice, but the S5 seems to have hit the mark as far as I'm concerned. It is not perfect, but I am very satisfied. Even if a root method is found, I'm not so sure I would be doing it.
As far as my need to flash something...well...that's what my N7 is for. lol
As much as I want root, I am just as happy without it. I've had zero problems with battery life or lag.
Obviously I care a lot, today I sold the S5 and just got an M8, having an Andorid without root is the same as having an iPhone or WindowsPhone. I like to be able to do whatever I want with my device.
Android w/o root is still a ton better than iOS.
For me, the only thing I want root for on this device is titanium backup, and the ability to enable car mode which AT&T very stupidly disabled.

I have a hard time saying this but I have to agree with the op. My excuse, powering savings mode. I can't live without it now, having gray scale and under clocking right at the touch of a button is sweet. I get three to four days per charge with heavy use. Plus I love the camera app, it's almost worth it for just that alone.

After using Touchwiz for a month or so.. i would definitely like to flash AOSP or something new. it's like the phone is starting to slow down or get buggy here and there.
Also Xposed has some great tweaks
Root isn't a deal breaker for me but it's always great to have options
I would miss xposed, but I could have managed with no root if Google wouldn't have F'd up the the external SD access. I really liked the phone, but couldn't justify dropping that kind of money on a locked down phone. I still pop in here every couple of days in hopes that an exploit has been found, but no such luck. I'm seriously considering picking up an international model pretty soon.
Glad to see an equal side oppositional in this thread, nice to see some agree with me. If I remember.. I did see something somewhere about a possible future update allowing more SD card writing.

[Q] First time Note User any Tips?

This is my first Samsung Device and my first Note. I've always used Nexus devices. Had the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 but the Nexus 6 was a little too big and the Note 4 had a better camera, screen, and battery. I've always stayed away from Samsung phones because touch wiz and the gimmicky features. So far I am loving the phone. I am even finding some of the features I thought would be a gimmick useful. So far I have done a few things to make the phone more Nexus like. I have installed the Google Keyboard and Google Now Launcher. Is there anything else I should do? Any apps I should disable? I want to make the phone as snappy as possible and if there is any crap running in the background that can be turned off I want to know about it.
Also what is the deal with the Samsung account? Do I need one? My contacts and stuff are all backed up with Google so what is the Samsung account for?
Disable anything you can that you don't use.
Don't use a Samsung account is not worth it.

If you are going to use s-note or the s apps, the Samsung account will back that up. Also there's some pretty cool "galaxy gifts" in their app store that are useful and free. I'd create one and check out what they offer. After all its free and you might find something you like.
From Dante's Inferno via XDA Premium HD
Samsung Account also backup your text and Mms. I'd say it's worth it.

Auto Awesome Movies? (Supported on Note 4)

Has anyone figured out how to enable auto awesome movie creation on this device yet?

Is there a way to trick the Google+ Photos app into thinking my Note 4 is a Note 3?
Or is there another work around to get this feature to work?
It is probably to coolest thing the Photos app can do and a bit disappointing the Note 4 can't do it.

You could try changing the device ? in the build.prop file. But be sure to make a backup of that file and possibly a backup of your rom. Just in case something goes wrong.
My suggestion exactly, if you edit the build.prop to register your device as a note 2 or note 3, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work?
BUT REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR EXISTING BUILD.PROP FIRST
I modified the build prop and for the feature to show. It's pretty cool, but for some reason I couldn't get the movies to save. Makes me think it's still not working correctly even though I tricked it into appearing.

Why wouldn't it work on the Note 4? It uses any similar pics taken, such as burst mode and makes it into a animated pic. It would be done in Google+ and not your phone.

I have flash stock rom 4.3 on the Note 2 and do not see it. The only options I see are for motion and mix. FYI, I have a T889 (T-Mobile), does that matter?
The Note 3 is listed on the supported device list, but I do not see the Note 2 on that list. I have previously flashed the i317 4.4.2 EZKAT rom but did not see it.
Will download CM12 and see if it is the option pops up.
Thank you.
I shoot with my phone and a couple other digital cameras. As long as you upload to Google+ or Picasa, its Google+ that renders all the stuff and will notify you when they do it. Then you can view them on whatever device you have. It's not always instant, you have no control of when or what will be done. I give it a couple days. I use the Stories a lot for events.
Fail - I couldn't get auto awesome movies on the Note 2 SGH-
t889.
Please let me know what note 2 rom you are on. Did you have to modify the build.prop, and if so which fields?. Thank you so much for you help..
So if you go and check the supported devices list...Note 4 isn't listed. Seems like an oversight. A lot of newer phones isn't. I can do Motion and Mix AutoAwesome from the device but not videos...I wonder why. I've posted to every social media I can to see if I could get an answer out of them.
I found the solution to enable making movie feature in google photos, but you will need to have your phone rooted.
You need to edit build.prop file in /system folder in root and find and edit as following:
(be sure to backup your build.prop file first)
ro.product.brand=google
ro.product.name=shamu
ro.product.manufacturer=Google
o.build.product=shamu
ro.product.model=Nexus 6
ro.product.device=shamu
ro.cm.device=shamu
Save the file and do a reboot and then try selecting multiple photos and click on the plus button on top, it will now show an option to make a movie, if still it does not show, reboot again it will show up.
Thank you for this.
I tried changing build.prop file after rooting my Galaxy S3, but still when I open Google Photos there is no option to create a movie.
When I'm checking About device in Settings it now shows:
Model number: Nexus 6
Android version 4.3
I wonder what wrong I'm doing. Someone else found a way to have it working?
