I've had T Mobile for about 3 years now and ive traded in 3 or 4 of my past phones, all rooted.
I traded my S3, S4, Note 3, Nexus 5 all rooted.
Just make sure before you turn it in, it's back to factory settings (i.e. Odin a stock Firmware.)
Of course the Knox will still be tripped, but T Mobile doesnt care about that, more of a Samsung Warranty issue rather than T Mobile.

Thank you @devynbf for your info. I'll go ahead and root my phone.

OP can you tell me what value you see in Tmobile's JUMP?
Since you're ready talking about trading in your Note 4 it's safe to assume 6 months or 1 year from now you're willing to let it go at half the cost? Half the cost of today's current Tmobile price is $349.
A mint condition Note 3 on ebay or craigslist will sell for that much.
Hence the question what's the value in Jump? Why would I wanna pay someone 10 dollars a month for the benefit of selling my device at half the cost? I think I can do better myself without a monthly fee
T Mobile employee here, rooting your phone will not trigger anything for a tmobile employee while they inspect your phones, the main thing we look for is water damage, screen, and it turns on and runs. Anything outside of that we will pretty much ask you to make an insurance claim and pay the 175 dollar deductible.
---------- Post added at 05:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:24 PM ----------
Keep in mind tho, when we mess up, and accept a device that needed a claim, the price of the device comes out of our pockets. Yes it sucks.
Depends on jump program

I have the very first jump program.
It's amazing.
It's $10/month, and it counts as insurance if ny device decides to fall in the toilet.
It also lets me upgrade my device every 6 months. As long as you trade in the original device and its functional.
Best thing T Mobile has ever done, especially with all the new devices being released.

I'm assuming since he just switched over that he's on the new JUMP plan. By the time you've paid off 50% of the device on that plan you're 12 payments in. After 1 year I'm not sure if you'd be able to sell the device for more than $325.92 (half of retail) unless it's in 100% mint condition. (I could be wrong). As an example Swappa says the Note 3 is selling for an average price of $335 right now in February 15. I guess it's really a wash. I don't use a case on my devices and they typically get pretty beat up. T-Mobile will take it back all scratched up and beat up looking as long as the screen is not cracked and the water indicator isn't tripped.. You're going to be getting around the same price as trying to sell it online without having to deal with the hassle and shipping issues.
I'm on the old JUMP plan so it definitely makes sense for me. As long as you purchase the phone with 0 down, you're just paying up front taxes and 6 months worth of payments. At $27.16 for 6 months my total investment is $52.14 front tax plus $162.96 equals $215.10. So I'm only paying $430 per year and getting a brand new device every 6 months. I don't count the cost of the monthly JUMP since I would be paying for insurance anyway. T-Mobile is paying $488.88 for my device after owning it for only 6 months. I'm okay with that. You won't get that much selling online after 6 months for a used device that's scratched up.

Technically they are not paying anything... They have a different math than us "consumers' ... any new device comes out from the factory cost no more than $150 if not less "Google it". Plus when your return the phone they sell it somehow and make money from it. So these companies making billions of dollars anyways from us. But in our math yeah it's good to change the phone every 6 month and so on and we only pay around $250
I just got the s6 edge 128gb pre ordered threw att's web site. I called customer service and told them Verizon is
selling there phone for 899.99 were att is selling it for 1014.99 so a difference of 115 dollars they credited my account
115 dollars and I payed full price so no contract for me. My contract was up last November so i waited for the s6 to come out.
I figured i would go back on a 2 tear plan but there isn't really any savings. The phone is 500 dollars buy they told me my
monthly rate goes up buy 15 dollars a month so take 15 dollars multiply it buy the time 24 months and add 360 dollars to the cost of the
phone. So the cost of the phone now is 860 dollars so for a 30 dollar difference i bought the phone and no contract. The next program
is a joke. But anyway i figured i would pass this info along so others might benefit from the savings. Have a good one

How is next a joke? It'd actually cheaper to get phones through next compared to signing 2 years contracts on the new MS value plans 10gb +. It's simply an installment plan on the full retail price...
How much you paying Next with 10gb data a month? Plus full price on phone. I don't need no 10gb a month.
If you were gonna pay full price for the phone and you're with AT&T should have bought the T-Mobile variant and unlock it... Why? Because the T-Mobile variant would have worked with AT&t LTE and it would have a unlocked bootloader. Taking for previews Samsung phones the T-Mobile variant have most of the bands and unlocked bootloader. If you're Verizon should have wait for the Dev Edition

More or less, companies price everything so that you pretty much have minimal to no savings on the contract. Sometimes, you even lose money, depending on whether or not you can get the device cheaper online or which model you're getting. Paying full price up front, however, is usually not recommended, mainly due to inflation and opportunity cost. That being said, 2 year contracts are usually the worst of the options, especially since they make you pay the tax of the full price of the device. If you're in a state without sales tax, this discrepancy can work in your favor.

i dont have the NEXT plan, dont you also pay sales taxes on it also? like on the first bill ?
For anyone wondering, I did the math on the three options provided by Verizon in terms of paying for the S6 Edge. Here are my equations, where n is sales tax. If you want to find out the cost where you live, replace n with (1+your sales tax). So if your sales tax is 9%, n=1.09:
32 GB
Verizon Edge: (29.16)(24)n=
2 Yr Contract: 299.99+[699.99(n-1)]+(15*24)n=
Full Price: (699.99)n=
64GB
Verizon Edge: (33.33)(24)n=
2 Yr Contract: 399.99+[799.99(n-1)]+(15*24)n=
Full Price: (799.99)n=
128GB
Verizon Edge: (37.49)(24)n=
2 Yr Contract: 499.99+[899.99(n-1)]+(15*24)n=
Full Price: (899.99)n=
For example purposes, I calculated with a sales tax of 9%. At 9%:
32 GB
Verizon Edge: $735.83
2 Yr Contract: $755.39
Full Price: $762.99
64GB
Verizon Edge: $871.91
2 Yr Contract: $864.39
Full Price: $871.99
128GB
Verizon Edge: $980.74
2 Yr Contract: $973.39
Full Price: $980.99
This only the device, not the amount you'll be spending per month in terms of data and minutes. However, the 15 dollar discount you receive for being off-contract is included in the price difference when compared to the 2 Yr Contract. I also didn't include any promotions held by Samsung, Verizon, or any other companies, as to keep this relevant for future readers.
In conclusion, inflation makes the difference between Verizon Edge and 2 Yr Contract negligible, so if you're on the fence, choose whatever you're comfortable with. Inflation also makes it much cheaper for you to pay through Verizon Edge instead of paying everything up front. So unless you're getting a significant discount somehow through a different dealer or Amazon or something, don't purchase the phone with a single payment.
+ no $40 activation fee for Verizon Edge
+ $100 bill credit to the new customer for Verizon Edge
No that best buy also sells phone with Verizon Edge, but the price is $150 higher than the Verizon Shop. I ordered mine from Verizon. I miss the preorder bonus from best buy (wireless charger), but I can find cheaper chargers in Amazon ($10 duracell bundle)

I actually did something quite similar but I simply went through the process twice on Verizon's device and plan pages.
For an S6 Edge using their 'Edge' service plan it worked out to $101.30 per month, basic service, 2GB, no addons, pre tax.
For an S6 under 2 year contract it came out to $72 and change plus the $349.99.
Running those numbers, the Edge plan cost $2431.20 over the course of 24 months. (taxes and fee's extra)
The contract rate however was $1735.2 + the $349.99 = $2085.19! (taxes and fees extra)
Now, there's the activation fee pay right? then that $30 discount for renewal but in my case an additional $100 for phone trade and the $50 mail in rebate.
Anyway, I realize your mileage may vary but according to the numbers I got off of Verizon's website, the Edge plan is an absolutely terrible option. Maybe multiple lines or large data plans might change that but for me the difference was roughly $486 savings to go with the contract.
Food for thought.
I guess you didn't count $15 / month discount for the customers with Edge program.
So basically you have to subtract 15*24 = $360 from the price.
I saw an article somewhere around the internet.. and it actually was the same price for both contract and edge including the activation fee.
But new customers are likely get $100 more benefit from the edge.
Again, existing customers can get a free gift if preorder through Best Buy.

I did a 2-year contract upgrade and not sure if it was noted or not but there was a $40 upgrade fee included as well.
Hey, nice to make your acquaintance.
Unfortunately the numbers still don't pan out. I just went through and did it again, this time the contract price came out to $80 per month. not sure why I saw $72 last time and $80 this time but....
Anyway, That's the monthly price minus fees and taxes. I didn't forget to add anything, Verizon did it all on their checkout page. 80*24+40-30+200=2130.
2 year Edge: 2430
2 year Contract: 2130
I was wrong in saying $486 and for that, my bad, but no matter how you slice it, contract is cheaper for a single line plan. Unless you need to upgrade often I just can't see the point. Then again, I've been on Verizon since the bastards absorbed Alltel years ago. Now that was a good company. I've never been particularly fond of Verizon but... I'm a CDMA guy so I don't see that I have much of a choice.
Edge is cheaper.

Also, I believe at the higher-tier plans, you get a $25/mo discount off, not just $15. Here is a good website that breaks it down:

My analysis goes like this....
I HAVE to have 64gb. 32 if MicroSD would be fine. But... that means 64 is a must since no more MicroSD.
I have unlimited data. If I go to Edge or renew my contract (I am off contract for over a year) I am forced onto a new plan AND loose unlimited. When I did the math on the prices/costs/fees of a new plan over 2 years (and unlimited data loss) VERSUS just outright keeping the phone and plan and data and no contract I have now, buying the phone outright wins in a dollars to dollars comparison.
9% sales tax omg where is that at!?!
California - many cities have 8-9 percent sakes tax.
Edge is more beautiful than S6 I think.

I have no idea if VZW was bull****ting with me, but they said that if you are on a family plan and the aggregate total data the family can use is at a certain level (in my wife's case, 16 GB), then everyone on the plan can get $25/mo off by switching to Edge. That sounded too good to be true, but they let my wife go to Edge and save $25/mo on the family plan.

they trolling you don't worry. All that has to be is at least 6GB data plan for -25$ either out of contract or on edge. Can't really believie reps these days especially last month they tried to make do an upgrade like twice when I was asking for something else and out of nowhere they were telling me that I asked for upgrade 2 weeks earlier and I never did lol.

In this case yes unless I misunderstood your last post that would be correct. As long as there is a minimum of 6GB data package on all your lines you would get 25$/per line per-edge phone or if you are out of contract.
Hope that helps
I know that I probably just need to drag my ass down to Best Buy or Verizon, but thought that I'd ask here first.
I am currently on a two year contract. Actually the contract expired last year, but the point is that I go with the whole two year contract thing. If I take advantage of Best Buy's offer on the Verizon, how will that affect my contract? You get the phone through BB, and it is $150 off. The monthly payment is something like $33 per month. Is that a contract price? Or do I lose my contract?
It's difficult to keep up with this stuff. I have always had contracts and never gone with anything else.

That would be the monthly payment for the phone itself, in addition to your Verizon plan cost.
Very few phones are subsidized anymore. They care more about the device payment than the contract. I have been out of contract for 2 years. When they used to subsiduze the phones they would lock you into a 2 year contract on the phone. That is no longer done by VZ. If you have a contract it's either because you got a subsidized phone less than 2 years ago or you added a VZ tablet or smart watch to your account. They still provide minimum subsidies on VZ tablets and smart watches.
I just cancelled my VZ preorder and paid off my S7. I then pre ordered from Best Buy to save the additional 150. Plus, I'll get 425 for my mint condition S7 Edge. I paid 786 with the 150 off, 56 dollars in tax and will get my Note 8 for 361 excluding tax or 15.04 per month. I also get to keep my Pixel XL as a spare.

Thanks. I actually completed my contract last October. I've had this Note 4 for almost three years. Turns out that I'm kinda dumb, because I've been paying the same price that I did when under contract, and my phone has been mine for almost a year. I pre-ordered a couple of Note 8s from Best Buy and once I get them, I'm going to knock my plan down to 2GB. With the 2GB plan and the two phones on payment plan, I'll be paying just a few more dollars than I'm currently paying.
I didn't keep up on what's going on with phones now, but it almost seems like this is a better way to go. I can pay this phone off any time I want, get a different phone, and sell it. Seems like more freedom.
Now that we see different deals coming out from carriers, BOGO, $480 trade, 50% off, is the Note 7 offer really a deal or are we just being duped with marketing to buy from Samsung?
Should we voice our opinions to Samsung and try to get some reconciliation of some kind?
What do you all think?
I picked up an iphone 5S from Walmart for the trade in. Cost around $100. Bottom line is that I don't have to add a line I don't need to my TMO account along with loosing my grandfathered incredible account. Net cost is $605 and I get $100 worth of freebies as a pre-order. I think it is a great deal for former Note 7 owners.
The difference really is in the new line or adding line details. Still, since there is any deal for any carrier new line or add a line, 480 trade, 50%, or BOGO, shouldn't the Note 7 offer have been a little more than the rest...those who trade in the lesser of the phones for 425 is getting a better deal but if they are trading in the s8 or s7, att is better and sprint is 50% off with no trade...it doesn't really bother me, I was just curious how everyone feels about it...I like the Samsung deal because I own the phone, but Sprint lease has 20/month with trade ins that can bring it to 10/month as another posted for 240 total and paying at the end to own another 240...so 480 total...but the whole thing with monthly payments...is it really a savings?

I picked up an iphone 5S from Walmart for the trade in. Cost around $100. Bottom line is that I don't have to add a line I don't need to my TMO account along with loosing my grandfathered incredible account. Net cost is $605 and I get $100 worth of freebies as a pre-order. I think it is a great deal for former Note 7 owners.

Same here, I picked up a mint S5 for $50.00 for trade in. Makes the total cost of the Note 8 less than $600.00. Plus I get the 360 camera too.

I grabbed a very near mint Galaxy S5 for $80, turn around and save $425 off the Note8. At the end of the day with the S5 trade in, selling the gear360 and selling my LG V20 I will walk away with the Note8 for around $260 (break down below) so I am pretty happy.
-$535.29 (buy Note8 with Note7 trade-in)
-$80 (buy s5 for trade-in)
=
-$615.29
-----------------------------------------------------
+$94 (Ebates)
+$80 (sell 360cam estimation)
+$200 (sell V20)
=
+$354
-----------------------------------------------------
$261.29 (total paid for Note8 in the end)
$985.79 full price (if bought outright, no deals/trade-ins)
$724.50 savings
I agree that it is not really a deal for Note 7 owners when I am trading in my Note 5 for $480. But that is the carriers, not really Samsung's fault.

My numbers are pretty much the same. I paid 40 bucks for S5 and have an Axon 7 I will sell for 250.

The fact that people have been buying Note 7 emails and codes even though they didn't own one just to get in on the deal shows that it's a pretty good deal.
What I got from Samsung because of the Note 7 fiasco:
Free use of the Note 7 for 4 months (normally $37.50 a month to lease = $150 comped)
Free use of the loaner S7Edge for 5 months (another $32.59 a month = $165 comped)
Free 256gb memory card ($250)
Free Gear VR ($125?)
$425 off a note 8 after trade in ($425 - $75 to buy a brand new iphone 5s from straight talk = $350)
Free 360 camera ($250?)
That's already $1000+ of free stuff right there, and that's just from 1 Note 7 and 1 Note 8. Others got multiple Note 7s and 8s and probably got even more stuff.
I'm only familiar with the Tmo BOGO, so that's the one I can talk about. The Sprint leasing deal is pretty good though. $10? or $20? a month for a lease to own the Note 8. Only downside is you're tied to Sprint for 2 years.
For the TMo BOGO: It's great if you are need 2 lines and 2 Note 8s anyway (wife, buddy, group buy). But for those of us who need just 1 or not on TMo, the Samsung deal is easier to do. For the TMo BOGO you need to add a line ($10 a month until the prepaid card comes in), you have to wait several months to get your money, you have to pay full taxes for both phones, and you have to go through selling the 2nd phone and freebie if you only need one phone.
Yes, the Note 7 deal is part of marketing from Samsung, but they're also legitimately subsidizing money for that deal because you were a loyal Note user. What they didn't anticipate is that carriers are also willing to lose money and subsidize the Note 8 just to lock you into their network. Just be happy that all these corporations are willing to lose money just to keep us, as opposed to 10 years ago when carriers didn't care and blatantly screwed everyone because we had no choice but to bend over (Verizon is still that way today).

Man, where did you find an S5 that cheap? I selected to send in a non-Samsung phone. According to chat, that's what I have to send in. Looking for a used V20, they're all in the $175-200 price range unless it's a bad IMEI.

Facebook Marketplace, lady wanted $100 and I offered $80 and met her that day. Phone is in excellent shape, crazy for how old it is. I'm selling my Verizon V20 for $200 to Walmart, they have a gadgets to gift cards department.

Yes, the older the cheaper just make sure it's on the Note7 promo trade-in list which the S5 is. The lady even left her 16gb SD card in the phone, can't have enough SD cards ?

Same place I got mine. He wanted $125.00 and settled for $50.00, said it's been sitting in his drawer for over two years. Looked at swappa first but I think they know about the Samsung trade in and aren't dealing.
