By now I'm sure most of us have seen that idiotic hole that Samsung are using on the next S phone. It seems highly likely that the next Note device will also have this stupid hole in the display. So I'm wondering how many of us Note 9 users here will remain on this Note 9 because of the hole or as they call it, "Inifinity-O" or "O-I can't believe they're doing this stupid thing™" Are you getting the next Note with a hole in the display or staying on the Note 9?

I wish they would have been strong enough to ignore calls from idiots who thought the top bezels on Samsung's flagships were too thick. The S9/9+ and Note 9 have shown everyone how classy and refined bezels can appear, with some room to shrink a bit further. You need SOME top bezel to house various sensors. You don't need a bottom bezel. Maybe my OCD is just too strong to ignore that stupid hole in the display but it's that hole that's going to keep me away from the next Note device. I doubt they'll introduce any other features that will break my mind and make me want to upgrade and be great enough to make me ignore that hole.
I'm buying the 512GB Exynos Note 9 as soon as I can. That will hold me over for at least through the fall of 2020. I just hope by next year Samsung will gives us that under-display sensor tech so we can just have an unobstructed display. Nothing cutting into the screen but a clear surface. Like it should be.

Just that won't dissuade me from getting a new Note if decide to change current one.

Why don't you wait and see what they do instead of speculating.

Yep, very hard to say what's next for the Note... Hopefully it will have a drone setting

Nothing wrong with speculating on what smartphone makers may do. It's an innocuous activity. But I do think Samsung are gonna go full steam with this Infinity-O display so it's a bit difficult for me to see why the next Note won't be sporting it.

Well it sure ain't a glory hole lol.
I would have have preferred none to be honest. Failing that something small like the Huawei Pro X small notch would have been acceptable.

They should just put a screen on the back of the Note 10 for selfies. I'll be okay with that. And still let us utilize the Spen back there too.
I don't even remember the last time I took a selfie, lol. I remember when the world thought it was weird to put a camera on a cellphone.

I usually don't put too much thought into renders/speculation/etc..... but,as the OP states,it hurts nothing & is a much more enjoyable read vs the battery life threads/repeat questions on topics/threads that have been covered ad nauseam.
Soooo..................... here's my 2¢ (yes,overvalued,most def,LOL):
Yes,the Note 10 will likely have one or two things that are new/different,likely an in-display FPR & the usual upticks in processor/cameras.
Is that enough to "upgrade" from the Note 9?
For myself,not even close.
While the Note series has been one of my favorite models in smartphones,I think the form factor has been in decline since the Note 5 was introduced.
Yes,for the most part,the internals are better than ever & the overall performance as well.
The display ratio,removable battery,usable (necessary) bezels for navigation/sensors & just handling the phone in general,are more sensible on the Note 4.
The changes away from this design were just for change sake,labeled as "new & improved" & it's been in a downward spiral since.
What would make sense to me?
A Note 10 Active:
Ditch the ridiculous glass-sandwich design,I hope Apple does,so that the Android mfgs follow suit.....................
The Active design makes sense.....for people on the go who are multi-tasking & use the S-Pen extensively,they're more prone to dropping their phone.
Why not ruggedize it & if one chooses,they can go sans case w/o much worry.
OK,that was slightly OT,so here's wish list item #2,closer to the topic,but,just as unlikely:
Pop-up Cameras
I had both the Oppo Find X & Vivo NEX for a brief period of time:
Yes,both have the presumed greater potential for hardware failure,but,one I think is worth risking vs the notch/hole-punch iterative design.
The mechanical failure,I'm guessing,is a far less likely scenario vs someone dropping their phone & breaking something else (the display comes to mind,LOL).
The pop-up mechanism was nice,especially on the Find X,for two reasons (outside of the obvious all-display form-factor):
1) The cameras,front & back,are stowed until ready for use,protecting the lenses from everyday wear & tear.
2) The privacy bonus:
If by chance you have a wayward app on your phone that has an unnecessary camera permission,this will be made apparent when the camera module pops-up for seemingly no reason.
I'm not the paranoid type,but,the added benefit of the cameras being tucked away for that very reason is kinda cool to have.
On this same line of thinking,I wouldn't mind a slider design,it gets rid of the notchole.
The former isn't happening (Note 4 retro design) & if I had to bet,neither are the pop-up or slider designs.
Yes,most likely,you'll have the option to "hide" the notchole via blackout,but,that just reduces the whole point of going "faux-full display".......
The bezels/sensors on the Note 9 are sensible & we're still left with a more than ample display,the camera-in-display destroys that.
Throwing this ridiculous iteration into the mix until the sensors are truly hidden is an entirely unnecessary step.
If Samsung wants to keep up appearances with improvements from the previous year/model,throw in true front-firing speakers (top&bottom) & continue improvements on both cameras,something everyone would appreciate. ( & for good measure,dare to be different w/a FLAT DISPLAY.)
The notchole will be on the Note 10,it's an easy pass.
If you're on a Note older than the Note 8,then I could see jumping on the Note 10.
Otherwise,grab a Note 9 (in any RAM/ROM configuration) & sit out Notcholegate until the design process evolves to a sensible form factor.

I might start saving for this rumored S10-X badboy!

I would bet $$$ that this variant of the S10,if it ever sees the light of day,will not be available until a good while after launch.
If it's not even mentioned next month,I'd guess the uber-specs will end up on the Note 10 instead.

@KOLIOSIS put it nicely. Sitting this next iteration out if the display is intruded upon. Which is another bit of Samsung irony because they spent a lot of time poking fun at Apple with those battery ads showing iPhone users camped out near power outlets at the airport whilst a Samsung user simply swapped out his battery on his phone and continued on smartly. A great way to show the practical features of a phone, which traditionally Samsung's ad folks have been great at.

But then the S6 and Note 5 arrived and those battery ads quickly became moot. Then they started mocking Apple's notch.
And now they've come up with something that's arguably worse than the notch. Just my two cents on it, which are valued much less than @KOLIOSIS

I hope that this fad of having an hole in the display for the front facing camera would be gone when I decide to upgrade from my Note 8. As I hate the idea of having a hole in the display of my device for the front facing camera.

Little doubt that this hole will not be on the next Note phone.

I was hoping that Samsung would keep the current Infinity Display design on the Note series of devices. As I prefer that to having a notch or a hole in the display...

This makes me wonder about something: the notification light. Is this Infinity-O display going to kill it? Are the next 10 models going to retain the notification light?

There's plenty of room for one,whether it's in the punch hole,or,as I've seen on a few phones,embedded in the speaker cut-out.
Whether Samsung chooses to keep it in any form is anybody's guess at this point.

I think the quote you cited meant they'd wish Samsung would keep the status quo on the display as it exists on the Note 9.

No I said that I prefer the current Inifinity Display design, which is the current display with the very small bezel. Not the notch or hole display.

One Big Disappointment

Got my HTC One a few hours ago after waiting with baited breath for the past week or so. Sadly, I find it to be a huge disappointment.
Build quality: subpar
sharp edges exposed where the aluminum doesn't mate perfectly with the sides. (Although my phone is not nearly as bad as the One seen in this thread)
Button layout: abysmal
no menu button, non standard home location.. this bothers me much more than I thought it would and is really a dealbreaker for me with this phone. Also I find the physical buttons difficult to use, but this could be slightly due to the build quality issue since there the aluminum isn't fitting perfectly flush in front of the power button.
HTC Sense 5: Horrible
News feed filling the entire home screen, ugly fonts.. just generally worse than standard android in every way. WTF were they thinking? Fortunately this is easily rectified
Aesthetics: meh.
I thought it looked really impressive online, in person I'm not that keen on the silver version. The black version would probably look cool though.
Everything else about the phone is great, screen, camera, processor, etc.. but the overall experience has been very poor, especially in light of all the hype surrounding this phone.
I've used HTC devices exclusively since 2005: Apache, Titan, Raphael, Supersonic.. Looks like Galaxy S4 will be my first Samsung phone.

Button layout is more preference. I actually like it, so calling it abysmal is a little overboard. Its like saying ergonomic keyboards are abysmal because they "feel" weird to you.
HTC Sense 5 is beautiful. Again, no idea why you aren't even trying to be objective. They are using the new font standard for Android, which I like. Having my news feeds at my finger tip, along with video and pictures is perfect for me. The new apps drawer has been very well redesigned and grouping icons is a great addition. Plus, you can always swype blinkfeed to the side and use the standard layout at anytime.
Aesthetics meh? Really? Even reviewers who don't like HTC admit its one of the best looking devices ever built. Come on, atleast give an accurate account of the device if you are going to post about it. Out of curiosity, what do you consider an aesthetically pleasing device?

I have a Galaxy Note 2, but also have a Windows Phone 8X. If the One is ANYTHING like the 8X in regards to build quality, no one can say the build is anything less than stellar. If they do then it is simply fanboi bias coming through.

I'm calling the build quality subpar because my unit has poor build quality, and because this phone has only been out for a few hours and there are already multiple threads complaining about this issue. The aluminum doesn't fit flush against the plastic sides, leaving a sharp exposed edge and it also causes the phone to make rattling sound when it vibrates.
Like you said the aesthetics thing is subjective.. I just don't like the interplay between the white sides with the aluminum and black plastic that surrounds the screen, makes it look too busy. If the sides were grey or black it would look much better imo. I haven't seen the black version in person but I'm sure it looks very slick.
The lack of a menu button is not really subjective, its clearly less functional than the alternative.. especially in some 3rd party apps which make heavy use of the menu button. This is the real deal breaker for me and why I will be returning this phone as soon as the galaxy S4 comes out, but no I am not an apple or samsung fanboy.. I don't own any devices by either of those brands, except for a samsung dishwasher lol =)

No. Not this again! I hate it! Since Galaxy S3, every Galaxy flagship had this "problem".

Just saw this on phone arena.. I really hope this isnt an issue.. Being this is one of the first devices ive preordered without handling first..

I'm confused... is that gap between the screen and bezel or the glass and outer edge of the phone? It's hard to tell from the photo.
On my note 2, the glass goes right up to the plastic frame, and that's the only place for a gap.

I'll believe it when I see it. I've never had that problem on any Samsung device I've owned (White S4, Black S4, Red S4, Black Note 3). However, I had the problem on virtually all of my HTC devices aside from the EVO3D. I don't see why people can't ignore those claims, try the device out themselves, exchange it if there's a problem, return it if it persists. Keep in mind that the only things media and the internet portray is negativity.

It's a well known problem, even here on XDA, many users talked about that since the S3.
I had it on the S3 at the bottom, and S4 and Note 3 at the top. Not huge gap but enough for the piece of paper and dust to get in.

This is the first I'd heard of it, my s3 doesn't have that issue and hopefully the note 4 I preordered won't as well. Worst case we should be able to take it in to get exchanged since it's a manufacturing issue.

I can't search for the S3, S4 now. But it was similar.

Certainly hope whatever caused this will be corrected before mine arrives on my doorstep. But I'm really not concerned.

Correct, that's with the older devices. Since the Note 4 isn't out yet, the iPhone 6 reporting problems, it could easily be a simple means of somebody trying to negatively expose the device. I can't say I've ever had those gaps on any of mine. Pretty interesting. Maybe don't pre-order it then? Just a thought.

I'd hazard a guess and say the problem isn't widespread. But if you are affected I'm sure you'll be able to exchange or get a refund

How "many" is many? I've had most of the phones you mentioned as have friends and I've never had or seen a gap on any of them. In the volume Samsung phones sell a page or two of complaints is like a single post on a HTC or LG forum. When the N3 first came out some people were going nuts about the physical home button "moving" when played with. I think mine (on my N3) probably moves but since owning it a year it's never "moved" on its own. XDA'rs tend to be more anal retentive than the masses.
As for what's shown in the pictures in the OP it doesn't really show anything. The photographer is showing a business card stuck in a Note 4 from about eighteen inches away. Very dramatic for social media but I'd like to see the gap itself close up before passing judgement. Quite a few people in the forum have posted pretty detailed impressions of the Note 4 display units they've played with at Best Buy here in the U.S. I can't believe if there was a noticeable gap that affected a large number of units that no one here would have caught it. I could probably wedge a business card between my N3's display and bezel if I wanted to. But I don't.

This is true. My note 3 has the 'moving home button' but it doesn't bother me and it doesn't seem to have got worse. I only actually noticed it whilst reading on a forum!
As long as the gap (if there is one) doesn't cause any dust build up, I'm not bothered.

This is already being overhyped. I just came back from playing with a Note 4 at my local Best Buy. There was absolutely no gap at all on it. I didn't take a pic, but I will next time I go in there.
This is just one of those things that maybe (MAYBE) will affect a small number of people. I'm guessing the majority of them will be fine.

It had already been mentioned that it affected the first batch of 30,000 in South Korea. Mostly likely corrected by now.

Went to local best buy at lunch here in Orlando. 1 of 3 on display had the issue. I could SEE and Stick my thumb finger nail in the right side of the device, between screen and metal trim.
Did it look like an issue to me. No, doubt anyone would notice.
Also the security clamps they use are so tight that the back over is deformed; which could be putting pressure on the rest of the phone.

when i had s2 years back, i remember it having gap on all sides so that if the phone falls down it dosent affects the screen. is the gap something similar here or its just on one side?

Don't worry if you gave it, there can not be dust under the screen because the screen is glued on it there can no dust under the screen, I have it also on my note3

Yup.. it's called a case. Don't care as long as it doesn't interfere with use.

If this is indeed an occurence hopefully its resolved before shipping. I wonder if the edge has same issue.
Either way if this is widespread Samsung will be 0-2 in trying to capitalize on iphone 6 shortcomings. Maybe this defect is why they delayed for so long.

Note4 AMOLED Screen Quality updated 11-11 reply from displaymate

As some of the Note3 members may remember, I made a big thread in Note3 General Forum in regard to the display quality of the Note3,

So, as I got my new Note4 (Snapdragon) yesterday (from Amazon Germany), it's time to take a closer look on the AMOLED of this brand
new device.
My first impressions are:
The display is overall way better in terms of color shift when tilting the screen, but:
At least on my first device there is a noticable shift in brightness on the right side of the screen, especially on the lower half of the screen.
On dark grey backgrounds (as for example the XDA app with the dark theme has) you can see a contrast or brightness loss on the lower
right corner.
But my unit has an other, more dramatic flaw: On the left side of the screen, just where the lower end of the volume rocker is located, there
is a 0,5mm area of the screen, where it seems like there is something between the screen and the glass, but there is nothing! on light backgrounds
the spot gets darker, on dark backgrounds the spot gets brighter > very annoying!!
But I guess this is a non common flaw, which is really bad luck and has nothing to do with the uneveness mentioned above.
The funny thing is, this time I really thought I wouldn't have to switch devices, because the screen is otherwise really fine, but the spot-flaw
ruins it for me...
So I ordered a replacement today at amazon, as soon as I have this second device I can compare the two in regard to the AMOLED quality,
and then I will update this post!
What are your first experiences with the screen?

Got my second device on Friday, and I've seen a third device from a friend:
My second device has a better screen in regard to uniformity (no darker right side of the screen), but: it is darker and has a slightly red tint when
viewed from the center. Also, the color shift is worse when tilting the device.
When I lay my three devices (note3, 2xnote4) side by side, enter *#0*# and compare the screens (walking around, looking from different angles),
then my hand-selected note3 has FAR the best performance in terms of neutral white, and tilting color shift is much less then on both note4.
the device from my friend has a worser red tint when looking straight on, but again tilting performance is better then my second device (although
not as good as on my note3)
conclusio so far:
.) note4 has worser tilting performance (color shift when tilting the device) as note3 (maybe due to higher PPI)
.) again, there are huge differences between different devices >> display lottery is back once again!
Update 02.11.2014:
After seeing a lot more of Note4 devices I'm now finally sure that on Note4 the displays vary a lot. "Perfect screens" are very rare, the best one
I've seen so far was on display in a "MediaMarkt" Store in VIenna. It was a display unit (without radio module), but the screen was a lot better then
on my current Note4. White was much more stable when tilting the device...
Today I had the idea of writing to "DisplayMate", because they tested a lot of Samsung AMOLED devices and their reviews always praise this screens
very much. Would be interesting what they would say to our issues:

I’m a consumer electronics freak with a plethora of devices, mostly from Samsung (I do not like
Apples overestimated marketing crap) and I’m especially a freak when it comes to displays. I
owned several AMOLED devices so far (Galaxy S1, S2, S3, Note1-4, Tab7-7, Tab-S(both)) and with
ALL of them I have to exchange them 2-8 (!) times to get one with a decent screen. Trust me, the
devices you get are cherry-picked from Samsung, or if you bought them randomly you must have
been VERY lucky!
I’ve a MSc in engineering and I hold product development lectures at university, so I know what
I’m talking about tech und manufacturing. Believe me, Samsung has big issues when it comes to
display quality. Their luck is that most people do not compare identical devices, therefore most
people would think their screen is ok and not bother.
So, what is the problem:

If you search you would find a lot of other threads in regard to Samsung’s AMOLED screens.
In short: The displays of otherwise identical units differ A LOT in terms of display quality. If you
buy 10 Note4 devices you will get perhaps 1-2 with a perfect screen, all other devices would
suffer from bad viewing angles (HUGE discoloration when tilting), uneven brightness distribution
(yellow corners, especially right side of the screen and lower half), or very different white tone
when straight viewing on. I did this since note2 this way: Purchase a few devices, select the one
with the best screen and return the others.
I think this has mainly two manufacturing reasons:
1) The panels are cut out of a wafer. Screens from the center of the wafer are perfect, screens
from the side regions suffer from uneven color and/or brightness distribution depending from
where of the wafer they have been cut
2) Uneven or otherwise not proper coating of the screen. A too thick layer perhaps could cause color
problems.
Nevertheless, what bothers me a little bit is that you do not mention any of this in your reviews, and
people think they have a perfect screen. It would be nice if you response to this issues and at least tell
us what your opinion about the reason for such huge quality issues is.

We get many Emails like yours with every display review article that we publish, with readers sending in comments and sometimes screen shots of their display, or even multiple displays side-by-side to accentuate the differences.
For our public article series we publish the results that we obtain. There is no question that there are always some defective units, substandard calibrations, variations between production lots and within production lots, variations in display performance, variations between displays from multiple suppliers and manufactured in different factories. We have no way to evaluate the scale, frequency, and validity of these issues based on reader Emails so we don't discuss them. All products, from displays to cars, have quality control and variation issues - consumers know this. We simply tell people that if the display is unsatisfactory then return it for exchange or refund.
For LCDs, a well known issue is the variation in the White LEDs used in the backlight - their color, brightness, and power efficiency all vary significantly. Manufacturers pay varying premiums to have the White LEDs pre-sorted into similar performance classes for their products.
We get many more Emails from unhappy iPhone and iPad customers than any other manufacturer. One possible source is that Apple uses many different suppliers for their displays. However, over a one year product cycle we may test a dozen iPhone and iPad units that are sent to us from multiple sources (including Apple competitors), and over many years we have never found any significant variations in display performance in our lab tests. I don't doubt that there are always some quality control and performance variations, but we have never seen any in the large number of Apple products that we have tested.
We don't get many Emails regarding Samsung OLED displays. Most seem to be the result of the sender leaving it in one of the default Vivid modes instead of the accurate (Cinema, Movie or Basic) mode that we use in our tests. Samsung is a single source manufacturer so that is not an issue. We also test many Samsung OLED devices (including many supplied by Samsung competitors) and have never seen any significant display performance variations within a given model. Again, I don't doubt that there are always some quality control and performance variations, but we have never seen any in the large number of Samsung OLED products that we have tested.
In any case, for our public article series we publish the display results that we obtain in our lab.
While it is difficult to get an objective statistical measure of the frequency and size of display performance variations, I highly encourage you to publicize this issue, perhaps via a youtube channel that can act as a central clearing house for this display issue.

@TML1504, Hey! I do remember your thread at the note 3's forum, was pretty awesome buddy made me change 4 n3's of mine to get a decent display due that that xD 1 thing I'd like to know is does the red still changes to orange even by tilting it a lil bit like on the N3, Ty.

Yes it does. The colour shift on the note 4 is bad. I still don't understand why reviews are not really mentioning it.

Yes it is. For me it almost detracts from all the good points about the screen; no point harping on about perfect colour accuracy if you can only see that when viewing the screen from exactly 90 degrees.

Yeah..it happen to me also..seem like at the right bottom the screen turn into pink white a bit at white background color..but it much better than my note 3..

Id suppose the same screen issues are on the Note 4 as well, lottery time.. I really like the note 4 due to the design but the lottery makes me think twice but maybe ill get it at a later date I wonder though how good are the dark greys on the Note 4, on the note 3 its terrible.

The screen on my device is flawless, I've loaded up that picture of all the wool and everything stands out clearly and vividly. Red is red and Orange is Orange etc.. if I tilt the screen any direction nothing changes, it's perfect.

I've seen six Note 4 phones in various Best Buy stores. All of them had noticeable shifting of colors when tilting the phone left or right, and it did not take much tilting to notice. I've played the screen lottery too many times with Apple products, and the thought of doing it ever again with any product doesn't make me happy.
I'm currently out of contract and was 100% sure that the Note 4 was my next phone. Now I'm not so sure. I have a lot of tolerance for issues that can come up with this technology, but screen quality is not one of those issues.
Disappointing.
The thing is, when looking at any new device, one of the top complaints seems to be screen quality. If I rule out every device because of screen quality, I'll just be stuck on my S3 forever.
I guess I'm on the fence.

I had the exact same problem with my first N3 that I got. I took it in to at&t and showed them and they replaced it. You couldn't see it on every "screen" but once you could it was evident that something wasn't right.

I too have this problem with colour shift on my Note 4, Can this issue be fixed with a software update?
I never had this problem on the Note 3

Bigger Screen - but, Much Less Usable Area!

While the diagonal of the display is "more", what concerns me is that the usability of the area is much less.
Consider the real strength of the Note line is the use of the S-Pen. Taking notes and drawing or writing we have LESS real space unless in horizontal mode - this is not my preferred orientation.
If you align the FLAT (non infinity) area - comparison from NOTE-4 to rumored NOTE-8 yes it's taller, but the writable area in width is compromised. Take a look at the attachment. the lower left display area is aligned discounting the "curved" portion of the NOTE-8 - you can't write on curved surface without difficulty... The width is 6.5mm narrower - that's ALOT!

I don't write TO-DO lists that are 25 items long! I write in sentences and paragraphs for inclusion in reports and analysis - and the NOTE-4 (my current device) is better at that.
I want a NOTE-8, but I'm somewhat concerned. How about you all? Do you like the direction that the Note line is headed with aspect ratios?

I don't think the note series is following the right path - ie S8+ with a pen is not what I want. The screen is narrowing for the worse.

I currently have the V20 and I am getting the Note8 because of the water resistance, better screen and much better camera. I have both Note 7's and had the Note 4 prior to that so I need the Note back in my life!

I have a Note 5 & wish they had stayed with that screen ratio rather than the narrow one of the S8, it just looks a bit odd on a Note.

The reason they are narrowing and lengthening the phones is to accommodate people with smaller hands mostly IMO. I also prefer a slightly shorter and wider display. 16:9 with basically no bezels would be ideal. But everyone is going to 18:9 for most of the newer phones. Samsung is going 18.5:9 which is even taller and more narrow. For now, this is the ratio that most phones are adopting - taller and narrow. Maybe in a few years that will have proven to be not as popular and phones will gravitate back to a bit shorter an a bit wider. Who knows.

Also prefer the shorter wider display...

My point is not only that it is narrow, but with the curvy edges of the "infinity display" it limits the usable area even more.
It's FAKE NEWS - reporting a screen size for the sake of numbers - you can't use the edges - nice for photos and videos, but not much else. Have you plugged in your 4TB hard drive only to discover you've got 3.6 of usable space after formatting? Same thing.
The display is not bigger - just squished around to fit narrow Asian girl hands - does not help me with the functionality or "productivity" that Samsung espouses. It

those giants makers including Samsung and HTC are pushing toward narrower screens because it saves on screen material cost during manufacturing. Note that 6.2in dia screen with 16:9 proportions has larger surface area by almost 9% vs. same diagonal screen but with 18.5:9 ratio This means with the last one more screens cut from single AMOLED wafer, means lower cost. But same diagonal spec. for marketing purposes. I won't be surprised if in 2-3 yrs some will start to push even further toward 2.35:1 (21:9) ratio marketing skinny phones as providing unique "cinematography experience". Same crap happened over a decade ago with laptops when all makers shifted from 4:3 screens to 16:9.
I had a chance to use S8 for couple weeks and experience was dreadful. Note 5 which I use now is probably last Samsung phone I owe.

I understand -
Plus:
Asians and women with narrower hands
Less scrolling, able to see more per page
Better spec's
VR may be better field of view
Con:
S-Pen has less writable area, you write on the "flat"
More scrolling, doc's that "word wrap" end up being longer, so more scrolling.
All that said, the writing and drawing is what the Note series is differentiated about.
It would make more sense to have more flat area.

I see people refer this design as been catered to please mainly Asian people. In China now, most people I meet small or big have large display phones, iPhone + range size is almost baseline for most of phones, It seems no one cares that you need two hands to use phone.
The Note 8 design I believe is more for western people as massive phones are still turn off for majority.
Comming from note 3 I am not finding issues with the width, I use s note! I find that curved edges are better for writing when phone is flat on table as it's curved and writing hand can rest on display easier as oppose to having flat edges which is less comfortable.

I agree. It's all about the costs. I prefer 16:9 ratio.
And to add insult to injury they made the Note 8 narrower screen curved!

It isn't about costs, the screens are actually more costly to produce, not less. It's about differentiation, style, and profit. Phones are getting good enough that the hardware is in many respects becoming a non factor. The phone industry is getting ready to enter the "appliance" stage. You don't really check the compressor on your new fridge, compare BTUs per square inch of burner, on stoves, etc. You look at the gross size, styling, durability/perceived reliability. The hardware under the hood is for most people generic, doesn't matter. Most of you should be old enough to recall this happening with laptops. Not to long ago laptops sold for much greater margins but as they got better for most people they became good enough, it became a value question, a styling question, rather than a hardware question. In the laptop industry however there was really only one operating system that mattered, windows. This made differentiation difficult when pricing was crucial and the result was the proverbial race to the bottom. Outside of the boutique systems for gamers most laptops move for a very low margin and it's a difficult business to compete in. They have become appliances.
Those happy people that make phones don't want this to happen to them so they are trying to create value and increase profits with style and differentiation before the performance factor becomes totally meaningless. They are also trying to wall you into their garden and for phones these things are related. When you know the clock is ticking and the hardware will soon become a non factor style and brand can still sell and is a way to avoid the low profits after the race to the bottom is complete. By locking you into their orbit they also act to make it so their value to you becomes higher because a move means hassle. Then they have the value add of harvesting your information and selling it. Remember Apple made 4 billion dollars last year serving google ads. Thats whats called free money and everyone likes free money.
So thats why, it's not really about right or wrong for the user, it's about holding profits up for the OEMs. If they make a same old same old boring slate they cant add value for style, they cant win brand recognition, they cant get the profit that those things bring. It's always about the money.

I find the narrower phone much more comfortable/"natural" to hold in my hand & overall less fatiguing to work with - so while I completely agree that narrower display contradicts most of what the Note series should stand for, by compromising effectiveness of the stylus from a professional writing/note-taking standpoint, I have to say that I still welcome this change, all things considered. Obviously this is something Samsung takes very seriously and would not have have overlooked. Yeah the cost-factor is a major consideration, but I'm sure there were many other practical factors which weighed in favour of the new design.
I also don't want to come across as naive in saying this, but given how expensive the Note 8 actually retails for, does the "cost savings" argument really even hold much water, any more than it being a convenient excuse? The fact is, Samsung could have put nearly any price tag on this unit and it clearly wouldn't have made much difference to their sales at the end of the day. People are prepared to pay a fortune for this device, just because it's "the new Samsung Galaxy Note" -- so there urgency for Samsung to take cost-cutting shortcuts couldn't have been all that great. Then again, I suppose when we consider how much the Note 7 disaster must have cost them, I suppose anything is possible after all
Granted, we all have our preferences though, and I can totally understand why some prefer 16:9 form factor and might even be disappointed/angered by this trend. You could certainly argue that anyone looking for long/narrow flagship offering could just buy the S8+ such that Samsung should have left the Note 8 form factor untouched, leaving customers with more variety in this regard instead of conforming everything to this new fashion trend... but it is what it is, and the overall sales figures will speak the loudest in the end. Can't wait to see what the future of this space holds though

I use a Note5 for work, and Note8 for personal. I prefer the screen of the 8 much better.

My point is not only that it is narrow, but with the curvy edges of the "infinity display" it limits the usable area even more.
It's FAKE NEWS - reporting a screen size for the sake of numbers - you can't use the edges - nice for photos and videos, but not much else. Have you plugged in your 4TB hard drive only to discover you've got 3.6 of usable space after formatting? Same thing.
The display is not bigger - just squished around to fit narrow Asian girl hands - does not help me with the functionality or "productivity" that Samsung espouses. It

This is way off topic, but me thinks you need to do some reading on how HD capacity is figured, calculated, and reported. Its not the same thing. At all.

Granted, we all have our preferences though, and I can totally understand why some prefer 16:9 form factor and might even be disappointed/angered by this trend. You could certainly argue that anyone looking for long/narrow flagship offering could just buy the S8+ such that Samsung should have left the Note 8 form factor untouched, leaving customers with more variety in this regard instead of conforming everything to this new fashion trend... but it is what it is, and the overall sales figures will speak the loudest in the end. Can't wait to see what the future of this space holds though

I find the more narrower a phone more of a being ripped off / short changed nickel and diming like OP does , especially when it's a "Note". I'm allowed to air my views ? Being easier to hold in the hand is perhaps true, but this is the makers justification for cutting corners to increase revenue but still charge a premium.
Karma already came and bit Samsung in the ass ref: the N7 fiasco, it will continue to do so should they keep abusing their position ethically and their clients. I remember Samsung when they were chasing Apple clients for customers, as soon as they got what they wanted figures wise they put the middle finger up on the folks who made them bigger than Apple.

The same to me, I have both the 5 and the 8 here on the table, and I prefer the 5.
Also wearing it in my shirtpocket it extends too much.
No need either for a software home button. I really see not much advantage for a larger screen.
Was completely happy with the note 5. I bought the 8 because more memory. I use dual SIM so no SD card.
Disppointed? No, but still...

I was using the note in a public bus today. I feel a little bit embarrased with this screen. I cannot hide it in my hand, so everybody sees I have this huge thing.

3.5mm won't come back - forget about it.
Fingerprint scanner on back was the one of worst "inventions". Glad it start to disappear from new models.

Have you actually used a rear fingerprint scanner? (Like I have for 7 years [V10 & V20]}
Have you actually even held a Fold2 or tried its fingerprint scanner?
The FP scanner on the Fold2 SUCKS in comparison to my V20's. Anyone with experience would agree.

Respectfully I disagree. The side/power button based fingerprints scanner on ZFlip, Fold1 and Fold2 (also similar used on Realme X3 Superzoom) are all perfectly good and recognise my finger 1st time in 9 times out of 10 unlock attempts
What was really shockingly bad was the Ultrasonic under screen fingerprint sensors samsung used on the S10 and S20 range. They were slow, unreliable and didn't work at all with a tempered glass screen protector installed - i hope Samsung never ever uses ultrasonic again

The FP scanner on the Fold2 is highly inaccurate and placed where it always gets touched. Every time I pick up the phone it says "Fingerprint failed 5 times, swipe to unlock."
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

About "30% wider" - you didn't get the original idea. Current width in folded mode is much more convenient to call. Outer screen is not intended to be a main screen, that's why it's not as wide as S20. Making phone wide as normal one will render phone even more bulky. It's already bulky to extreme comparing to modern phones going toward the slim and lite form factor. So at least it's narrow when folded now.

By combining all your wishes the phone should be released in ~2010. None of you wishes are in trend today and won't happen.
Ok, a little widening may happen if they will manage to make it thinner (by switching flexible screen to outside like on Mate X).

IR Blaster is a great feature on my LG V20! I use Quick Remote often on trips to get into hidden menus on hotel TV's and lots more!
I can live w/out 3.5mm out, but it's nice to have, especially on the LG with its Quad DAC.
I don't see an LG phone in your sig. You want one? I have (4) V20s and (2) V10s. You should use a V20 for a while so you see what I'm missing.
If I could run SAAX and Gravity box on the Fold2, I'd be a little less upset with missing the physical features.
I will try the "only when button pressed" setting.

what i miss long time is removable battery. I really miss the time when i could bring a spare battery and get double working time. Now you need to bring a heavy power bank which just equals to a tiny spare battery. But regardless that i want it, it won't appear in future devices. New features may appear but not past ones. That's why neither 3.5mm nor IR blaster will appear again.
A positive thing to move away from 3.5mm is that Type-C phone plugs have to have an integrated DAC. So buying a Type-C earphone you are buying a whole set of DAC+earphones. High quality earphones may include high quality DAC and not depend on phone audio output quality anymore. Integrated DAC in earphone may get advantage of fine-tuned parameters between each other. Or you can buy Type-C -> 3.5mm high quality converter for existing 3.5mm earphones.

Interesting ideas to say the least.
I haven't used an LG phone in a while (for extremely good reasons based on personal experience) but the FP scanner in the Z Fold 2 is absolutely amazing. As mentioned above, just set the scanner to only be active when you press the power button and you should be fine.
But IR blaster + that fingerprint scanner location makes absolutely no sense. IR blasters are a niche requirement for few, and the scanner doesn't fall on a place that anyone's fingers naturally fall on. Besides that, a scanner there would look terrible.
7200 mAh sure sounds nice, but would add significant heft to an already heavy phone and make it significantly thicker. I'm all for thicker phones that are a tad bit heavier, but not on the Z Fold 2. On the Note series or S series of phones, I'll always take that trade, but on the Z Fold 2 - nah.
MicroSD sounds nice, and a slightly wider cover display would also be appreciated with 90hz or 120hz. I'd be sold on a Z Fold 3 with a slightly wider cover display + higher refresh rate cover display.

If you are having issues with your finger print scanner on the fold 2 , a neat trick would be to register it twice.

Comparing this to an LG phone, V20 at that....ROFL. SD card option should be included for sure.

Yes we will have to agree to disagree as my experience is completely different to yours

I always disliked bottom scanners because you have to pick the phone up and I often use mine on the desk. I had problems with this scanner at first but then I realized I was using just the side of both my thumb and index to unlock. Redid the the prints concentrating on the side and it works with the same reliability as a back or front scanner in my use. I loved the IR scanners on the phone, was more bummed to see them go than the audio jack. I travel a lot so it was nice to be able to use it with TVs in motels, turn the game on in a bar, etc.
My wishlist would include moving the selfie camera over to the side, it's ridiculous that you either have it intrude into the picture or needlessly reduce the picture size to leave it out. Yeah, I read their reasoning and disagree.

Gotta say, I do love this in the car!

The side FS works very well for me. But using it to swipe down notifications, it's too damn sensitive. I had to disable that feature.
