[Magisk Mod] Pixel 3 XL muffled speaker fix - Google Pixel 3 XL ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Oth

Speakers sound muffled?
Speakers sound better after pausing then playing media?
Speakers sound better if volume is maxxed then lowered back down?
If these issues sound familiar to you, then maybe this Magisk module will help. It contains just (4) files from the December patch and has fixed the above issues for me.
Credits: I stole the device and software checks from jtothe4n. Hope they don't mind.
Changelog:
v2: Added 'libmaxxaudioqdsp.so' from Dec 2018 patch - unsure if this made a difference or not since I don't have another device I can directly compare against.
v3: Removed security patch check. I was hoping it would have been fixed in the April update, thus no longer requiring this patch.

I just added a v2, which contains the Maxx Audio DSP lib from the Dec 2018 patch. Feel free to try that one out as well.

Installed the v2 mod... currently haven't noted any difference sofar

Magisk mods belong in the Themes, Apps, and Mods section if I'm not mistaken

I have noticed all my audio behaves strangely. How come using older files helps?

This no longer works installs on the April update.. can we get an update? It fixed my issues and it's greatly appreciated.

How can this still be an issue? Every month I hope and pray Google fixes this. This is a pretty big bug to me. Always needing to pause, and then play to fix sound. I really would like to know what Google is thinking leaving this be for so long. Sound quality is so important, and this issue really makes using the phone unpleasant when it happens. Is there an official bug report Google sees for this, or is it just up to the community to fix it? Anyone know if it is happening on the Q beta? UGH
EDIT - Seems like Q beta does the same as someone here posted it. https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/aypnuw/pauseunpause_sound_change_pixel_3_xl/

For me this mod makes my speakers sound worse unfortunately. The buzzing comes back with a vengeance, makes it not worth using for me personally. I'll just keep hitting pause and resume for now until lazy Google fixes it.

It's probably due to audio changes that Google did to address the speaker distortion/balance. Speakers are a bit softer but you have less distortion that seems to be the trade off.

I found a fix and it is already in your phone, go in the Google music app, and turn on the equalizer. Turn it on and change it to something anything. I put it on normal and top speaker no longer is muffled and sounds the same as the bottom. Sounds super clean. I thought I messed my phone up with viper. Uninstalled all that and tried that... To my surprise it worked. Also make sure the apps that play music don't have their equalizer like Spotify. Change that to what you changed the music app. Sounds stupid but works. I was even thinking doing an RMA but this worked. Sounds killer like it is supposed to.

It's funny that you mention this. I was playing around with both GPM and PowerAMP. I have both installed, and both have their own equalizer set differently. I tried force stopping both so the equalizers wouldn't play into it, but on YouTube the sound still changed at random. I'll try your method to disable PowerAMP, and set GPM to normal. The only other "fix" that works for any period of time is to open an app (like a game or something that plays sound/music), raise the volume to 100%, and then back it down to what I want. That way it stays clear for me. I hope you're solution works better. Thanks for the tip. I'll post my results after a while of using it your way.

I was tripping that my sound sucked at times and didn't at others. The volume I thought changed it and good to know before I wasn't tripping, it isn't just me. Sometimes before it would sound awesome then completely sound like I blew the top speaker. All funky playing. Since I did that it has tripped out a few times I noticed using talk to text but generally plays like it is supposed to be playing, awesome sounding out of both. I even tried pushing mono audio in accessibilities settings. No change. Found this to be a huge change, changing the stock music app. You don't need to use that app. I didn't enable any of the as location of anything. Just went to settings and just equalizer. I couldn't believe it. Pandora worked great. Speaker for speaker phone even changed to sound better. Let me know if it does help.

And idiots are Google should of put a native equalizer in settings. Across the board equalizer. That would of been the route to go. For some reason they left that out even though the app is present. So I believe all's the apps do is actually access that audio API for it with no way user to acc ess it. By changing the stock music app it changes the actual music effects app present in phone. Look it is in there. No ui or way to access it.

Let me first say to the OP sorry for hijacking this thread. I think we should make a new thread on this workaround/fix because so far so good. I haven't done a ton of testing, but all the apps I've used have had steady sound all day since I turned off PowerAMPs equ, and set GPM to Normal (went though a couple of games and apps several times, and usually the sound would change randomly by now a couple of times). I also turned off Bass Boost and Surround sound just to be sure. If it continues to work well I'll start a new thread, and post a link to your first comment on what to do. Great tip so far! Again OP sorry for the hijack.
EDIT/PS: I agree there should be a system wide EQ. That's one thing I always wish for in a stock Google ROM.

I was bummed Q didn't have one. And I don't mean to hijack or any disrespect. For anyone reading I have personally never tried this mod. And my experience is not a meant to over shadow this mod and or thread. Just saw others with the same issue is all. And go for it if you want to start a new thread. I am trying on my lady's pixel 2 xl because hers she just told does the same thing.

Is anyone's earpiece actually TOO LOUD?

Hello All,
I searched first by the way :-/
Recently my Nexus has had its earpiece too loud for both Incoming and Outgoing Calls.
At first I thought it had something to do with the radio, so I downgraded. It actually worked on the first call but after that it was loud as heck even on the lowest volume.
I tried to retrace my steps with my applications next, but nothing that would point to the earpiece. The last apps installed updated where mostly games like Fruit Ninja and Aliens vs. Humans, so I think we can rule out that.
The specs in my sig should be up to date.
The only variable that has changed other than the ones listed above is the fact that I recently bought a Jawbone Icon Bluetooth Headset. But to my memory, this issue began before that.
Can't find a solution anywhere cause it seems most people have an issue with the phone being too soft lol.
I'm really looking for some help guys. I'm just short of wiping the phone clean and reinstalling CM6 and my apps. If that dosen't work I'll have to use the warranty I guess. Had the phone from about Sept 10 I believe.
Let me know if I missed anything guys. All ideas are welcomed to fix this issue.
It's probably because of CM. CM uses a audio boost kernel by default, so I'm guessing that's the problem. Try installing no audio boost kernel to see if it solves the issue.
yeah if you are using cyanogen ROM, they added an audio boost hack long ago. on cyan 5.0.8 the audio boost was so loud that over 50% volume started to distort the speaker and kill your ears. so in later releases they split the difference and lowered it somewhat.
but the boost has always been there. the only likely possibility is that you recently started enabling DSP settings like compression or the EQ, which would suddenly now make things way louder.
Wow thanks guys. Had no clue that CM had an audio boosted kernel. Guess I'll be flashing something else for the while. Something as close to vanilla I guess.
Oh, I also checked the DSP settings, everything was off but was worth a shot.
Thanks again for the replies!
Just to let anyone with the same issue know, I found away around it. I installed one of Wildmonks kernels without the audio fix.
Kernel 2.6.35.10 to be exact. I get to keep my cyan features and have a decent volume ear piece too. Yay!
Good work. It's funny cause most people complain this phone is too quiet. If only they see this post!

Would help to know what ROM you are running.
Sound glitches have been fixed in the latest official and unofficial nightly ROMs. You either have not updated or you have one of those devices thats just gonna have issues with android (battery, sound and wifi are the most common)
None of this is new info. Please search the thread for whatever ROM you are using. If no audio fix is mentioned then you need to change ROMs. Once again you use the SEARCH function to find what you need seeding as audio issues are common

Im using the official nightlty from june 18th
There's always been sound problems. They are slowly getting better. A new one I'm dealing with is the infamous 'Machine Gun' sound.
Also, as I run apps for extended periods of time (such as Cut the Rope, or Apollo), the sound will start to get muffled. A solution I use is to close the app, and try reopening it.
A small gripe.

Do you have an explanation or link to a thread with an explanation as to why some devices are just gonna have issues and others won't? Part of me thinks / hopes its just because things are still a work in progress. I have no issues at all with spotify..crystal clear. But then some games like magic piano are horrendous..and other games like mini motor racing only have some popping in the main menu..game play is fine.

Problem with short sounds.

Hey guys! So I'm always on here asking more technical questions, but I realized that I never asked about why the Nexus 6 for some reason doesn't like to play short sounds! For instance, the sounds when you like stuff and share stuff in the Facebook app, or the ding sound from Facebook Messenger. As well as other short sounds. Is this just mine? Or does this phone just do that? Thanks again guys!
I have the same thing happen on my phone. When it receives a notification, sometimes the first 1/4 second or so is very low in volume and then the sound picks up to a normal level. Weird for sure.
Then I'm not the only one, it's weird and I wonder if it's a software bug or even supposed to be a software feature! Lots of times, if it's a short sound, the phone just vibrates and skips the sound altogether!
Sent from my Nexus 6
Same here...
Yep me too, intermittently, on Cataclysm suspect it's an M issue.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Might not be the same issue but I found the same thing with ringtones - starts out very low initially and then returns to normal volume. Not sure it is an issue inherent with M since I haven't had it happen with most of the modified M roms but did have the issue with the M versions of Cataclysm I've flashed. Also had similar issue with some L roms also.
I hate this low volume bug and have started using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ryosoftware.notificationsmanager... It works excellent.. Set up repeating notification for program ur having problems with, for me is FB messenger.. U get a simultaneous double notification sound first time and u can setup time interval for re-notification... Free version you can pick just one app, but paid version unlimited apps and I think was like $2 bucks or so... Well worth it... Hopefully helps someone... Flash safe lol

Some of these half sounds are freaky!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this has been an issue since this phone was released. It has been for me, at least. Every sound starts off very quiet and increases to normal after a second or two. I hated it at first but I've learned to live with it.

I've had it since I got the phone on 5.0.1 yea and still happens today.
Yea, this phone has always done this. Definitely not a Marshmallow issue.
Sent from my Nexus 6
So. Is there absolutely no solutions for this? I recently switched from SlimLP to stock Marshmallow and now I keep missing notifications since the sound is sometimes basically inaudible. I didn't have any problems with notification or any other volumes with SlimLP. Kinda sucks how switching back to stock broke such an essential feature especially since stock doesn't have notification LED either.
Nexus 6 have 3 main audio issues;
1- Volume normalization for certain frequencies. Some songs are really loud(funky, pop types), some are just fading suddenly(rock or metallic), just try to use a good equalizer program or viper.
2- Voltage dependent volume lowering. This is an issue with amplifier chipset, some kernels are disabling them(blu-spark, hellscore etc) but at very low voltages it is still effective.
3-Ascending sound. This is what causes notification sound problems. Actually this can be experienced all android system sounds and lots of apps that use them(whatsapp message send click, keyboard clicks, notificaitions etc.). Only way to solve it for now is to use another program for notifications. I'm using lightflow for led configuration and some notificaiton sounds like whatsapp, facebook messenger. You just need to switch volume control in notification settings to lightflow volume control, also you must disable original sounds to none. It is not a good solution, yes and I hate dropping google keyboard sounds but for now it is te only way .
Definitely this issue wasn't on L stock Rom, after upgrading to M stock Rom, my notification went to hell.
---------- Post added at 09:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:41 PM ----------
Can you tell how u set lightflow for Facebook messenger? I set it up and still issue persist with messages, did I just waste £2.00?

Touchscreen feels slow, unresponsive

I just got my R1 HD out of the box and have immediately noticed that the touchscreen often requires me to try tapping a couple times before it registers. Has anyone else seen this happen? Very annoying.
Yep I noticed that myself. I'm coming from an LG G2 that had touch issues, and its great a new phone is almost as bad.
I'm wondering if its just a quality control issue? Some report it slow or unresponsive. Personally I have not experienced this. If your experiencing this right out of the box, I would definitely be contacting Amazon for an immediate replacement. I would end up throwing my phone over touch issues, and we all know that's not a warranty claim
Return it immediately. Mine has zero touch issues.
I've been having this problem and made a thread about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/help/touch-screen-periodically-starts-t3439547
Ordered a unit and started having the touch problems described in the OP a few hours after I got it.
Had it replaced by amazon and the replacement is doing the same thing too. Not only does it randomly exhibit the described behavior but sometimes while scrolling it loses track of my finger and starts pressing everything in the path of my scrolling.
Really aggravating. If there isn't some kind of software fix we can possibly do I'm going to have to return it, don't have time to deal with it anymore.
It's a shame because I really love everything else about the phone.
L-Speed after root
After you root it download L-Speed from google playvand go to main tweaks. Hope this helps.
What version of the phone are you using? 16gb/2gb or the 8gb/1gb? I have the 16gb/2gb and works fine. I wish the speaker phone was 50% louder.

Viper is a kernel module / app that gives you more control over audio settings, at least for speaker, headset, and bluetooth. It needs root ( and the magisk systemless stuff works great with it for me) but then you can edit stuff like gain, equalizer, and many more things. I honestly don't know what 90% of it does, I just use the gain boost.
You can find it in the play store (though I had no luck with this one for some reason), or if you use magisk a flashable zip is in the 2nd or 3rd post in the magisk thread.

As for other mods, I know Speaker Boost works ok (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.omegacentauri.SpeakerBoost). Though. That just boost audio volumes.

speaker got noticeably a lower sound

mine as well i just noticed it after latest update
Mine is not a new thing I've noticed.
It's not permanently low. It's like I'll watch a video and the usb c port speaker is decently loud with a full sound and then about 5 mins in it fades to quiet and tinny. The front firing speaker seems unaffected.
Playing the video from the beginning doesn't change anything so it doesn't seem app specific. This has happened since day 1 but I don't listed to much out loud these days

This change in volume is caused by Dolby Atmos. Whenever this happens when you're watching a video, you should try going to the dolby atmos settings, switching to a different mode (and then back if you want), and play the video again. The software automatically EQ's based on what you're listening to in a really dumb way, and the method I just described will let it forget and reset for a little while. I'm currently looking at a method to remove Dolby Atmos entirely in favor for an actually decent EQ.
Edit after 45 minutes:
I've removed Dolby! I crossed my fingers and removed it via adb.
The command I used in ADB was:
Code:
pm uninstall -k --user 0 'com.huawei.imedia.dolby'
I had a little switch in my notification drawer which immediately was gone. In the settings there is no sight of the software either, and my phone speaker finally sounds fine! I hope this will work for you all too.

Yep, it works. The only thing that alters the audio now is if you plug your phone in, but that's not too bothering for me personally. You could try disabling it too, once you're shelled into your phone just type "pm help" and there should be a long list of commands you can apply.
Thanks for the tip! I bought a second hand cellphone, and I thought it was defective. I used the debloat software for huawei phones, and now it sounds how it should be. I just had to install an eq from playstore to use when using earbuds, because I felt it was sounding different. Now everything´s fine!!!
Seems it has re-activated itself on my phone, switch is still gone. I'll do a reset this afternoon to check the sound difference, but this fix seemed to be temporary for some reason...

Yeah, read about it on a debloat post on P30 Pro forum, system apps aren't full removed through adb, it just disables for the current user (wich is user0/ default main user), without it, the uninstall command won't work, to remove completely it needs root acess, wich unfortunately we can't get, but I'm not sure if they are allowed to reinstall itself, unless a factory reset is made.
Edit: Guess what, uninstalling Dolby Atmos seems to dont fix the issue at all, but Dolby is still gone, maybe it has something to do with the system keeping some of its data in the storage, or this issue has something to do with some other system service. I'm installing dolby again and try to look for something else, seems to have nothing to do with dolby, since when using dolby with earphones it don't do that.

This change in volume is caused by Dolby Atmos. Whenever this happens when you're watching a video, you should try going to the dolby atmos settings, switching to a different mode

Yes this seems to have worked as a quick fix, thank you!
Will attempt to disable it completely later
