LG V40, a possibility of using USB-C -> HDMI cable - LG V40 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello everyone!
I am creating this thread here in "Guides, News and Discussion" because surely it will be an discussion.
I was using my v30 for a long time until it broke and i had to buy new phone. I instantly bought v40 after some good reviews and my opinion about v30 and i didn't know that lg would make such a big downgrade for me when it comes to using HDMI cable (or display port) to put your phones screen to tv/monitors. It turns out that lg v40 is not supporting usb-c -> hdmi as v30 did BUT i saw some people managed to do it. And here is the main topic: How did they managed to do it, how could I/We do it and if it is possible, would I need to install a particular soft or root phone or what?
Sorry for my bad English, did my best.
I will wait for your opinion about this guys because i am not experienced about custom softs etc(which maybe could fix hdmi possibility).
Thanks in advance for replaying,
Teslalgm

I have a V405EBW, i just plugged in the same adapter as on my V30 (H930) and it worked, on stock and on LOS16/17 (on the V40)
Adapter is from USB C -> USB3.0+HDMI+Type-C (last for charging only)

I have to make an update, because as you said, it can work. Here is why i thought it isn't working on every v40 after last updates:
I bought 5 different adapters that converts usb c on the v40 to hdmi or display ports. Every single day i was receiving new adapter after previous didn't work I was also plugging in my old V30.
The thing is, after i tried 4 different adapters which every one worked with v30 and didn't work with v40 i thought that it's just some kind of version of my phone that can't support it.
The next day after failure when i was supposed to send my V40 back (14 days to give back in my country) i got my 5th adapter which actually worked.
I think that it's because V30 uses a newer version of usb c (1.4b) and the v40 uses 1.0 which i think caused the problem even when LG gave us an software possibility of this connection.
If anyone want to know which adapter worked for me and which didn't just write down here so i will answer to all of you with pictures and links to shops with those adapters.
So yeah, V40 isn't that bad after all, it's a shame that it's not usb c 1.4 but still i give LG plus for adding the support in software.
EDIT.
Here is the adapter that worked for me, no company name, no logo, just random no-name adapter that saved my V40

That's weird. I've got a korean V40 and it has worked with 3 different usb-c dock / dongle that I tested it with. HDMI out works out of the box. Using it to play COD Mobile on a 32" screen.
I used a Dell DA-300, Dell WD-15, a Ugreen 6-in-1 mini dock. Only the DA-300 sucks as it can't charge the phone so battery dies really really fast. The other 2 have PD2.0 support so they can fast charge the phone while in use.

From what I gathered about the V40 and USB-C to HDMI out is that the US variant phones like the T-Mobile V40 supposedly support the actual Slimport implementation, but is disabled for some unknown stupid reason. Which is a shame because Slimport has zero lag or latency. Though, I'seen some people force the LG V40's USB-C 2.0 port to display through the (DP ALT-MODE) which is a derivative of Thunderbolt 3's video out codec. I've also seen video of the LG V40 working with adapters, but there was definitely noticeable lag. I've waited a while to upgrade my phone and really wanted the V40, and now there only $200 or less. I have the LG V20 and it has the Slimport video out capability on its USB-C 2.0 port. So I figured I could just use the V20 here at the house and just have the V40 for a daily driver. What bugs me is reading conflicting stories on the LG V40 and it having Slimport. I think its like the V20. it does have a USB-C 2.0 port and it has the Slimport capability, but its not enabled on the phone. Kind of how some variants of the V20's FM radio wasn't enabled but some did get it working through firmware or software mods. Then there others that say some of the international variants officially support Slimport. My only answer to this, is to call LG and find out 1nce and for all if the LG V40 has the Slimport capability or it just has that forced (DP ALT-MODE) display out. Soon as i find any more info or get my LG V40 and dig into its system files or the international variant's ROM, i'll post some more data that I get about this. Worst case, i'll just get the V50. it has a 4000mAh battery with the Vapor Chamber. It also has the SD855 and Adreno 640. Another thing about the V20, V30, V35 and V40 is the thermal.conf file which causes the phone to thermal throttle at 43c-53c. When I ROOTED my V20 and was able to run the SD821 clock frequency mod and have the Adreno 530 run full out with out throttling was a night and day difference. No more micro stutter, lag while surfing or dropped frames in gaming. Why would I upgrade to a phone that's just going to thermal throttle itself. Though, I think ROOT has been achieved on the Unlocked variant of the V40. Just wish the T-Mobile version had ROOT.

I have a Lg v40 TMo Variant, with the most recent update, I been able to usel ISB c Dock, for HDMI out, i tested a few, and word, some that didnt work before Android 9 Update

I wrote to the LG Serviceteam here in Germany, and they replied, that the LG V40 (LMV405EBW) does not support HDMI over USB C.

Works fine on mine (IMEI said destined for German market i think... or was it Netherlands where i got it from... not sure atm, those sites kinda broke) though. Worked with stock, and works now with Lineage.

This thread is fantastic news!
I get my V40 this week and am selling my V35.
Got sad for a sec when I heard V40 didn't support HDMI on a review.
Glad you all found a way to get it working

[Q] Slimport adapter - any standard one would work?

Hi fellas,
My previous S4 was using MHL and it seems that not all MHL cables are compatible with all phones.
However, with the G2, I need to get a slimport-HDMI cable.
For those familiar with slimport, can I just go out there and get any one and be guaranteed that it will work?
There are many that are meant for the Nexus4. I'm betting those would most certainly work.
Those who got it for your device which works well, care to post a link to the product?
Thanks!

Well, I'm assuming Slimport is a better and more controlled standard than MHL so I hope any existing slimport adapters out there will work with our LG.
Like I mentioned, MHL wasn't the same for all...
Is their anything like Samsung's all share cast I'd like a wireless way to connect to tv.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
Slimport is in fact just a single "thing". Right now, you can only buy a single HDMI adapter or a single VGA adapter.....from Slimport. Even though it's a "standard", no other company makes the things -- at least I haven't found any yet. I bought my slimport adapter back when the Nexus 4 came to market.
Our G2's also support Miracast which I can confirm works with my Netgear PTV3000.

So I assume your slimport which you bought for N4 works for your G2 as well?
Yea the choices for such adapters are pretty limited right now.. and I gotta be prepared to fork out the cash for it.

No MHL?

Hey everyone. I gotta say, the droid turbo is an incredible phone even without the promised 48 hour battery life. However, I can not find any info on support for MHL or not. I've got a pioneer radio (this one to be exact) that demands it and so far I can't get it to work. Any help/alternatives to MHL? Thanks.

When I looked for the spec everything I read kept referring to some form of casting or mirroring wirelessly. I am disappointed and pretty confident there is no MHL
Sent from my SCH-I815 using XDA Free mobile app
I don't know about MHL, but it is compatible with WiDi, MiraCast and AllCast/AllShare.
Just turn on your WiFi then bring up the toggles from the notifications screen and you will see a Cast Screen option.

Yeah i knew that, but i don't know how to get the radio to communicate with my phone.
This is on Motorola site. Doesn't say what phone it works with but I would assume it would work with ours. Too bad it's out of stock for the $3 bucks they want I would have given it a shot.

I think it is too. Is there a way to stream to a chromecast without a network?
Any luck on this? I just recently bought a pioneer radio as well, and trying to do the same thing. I have everything connected, but it turbo doesn't play along. Have you made any progress with yours? Bought a new phone that does support mhl??

Droid Turbo doesn't support video out over a wired connection. Your best bet is to buy a Miracast dongle like the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter or Belkin Miracast Adapter and an HDMI coupler (Female to Female).
Connect the coupler to the HDMI sticking out of the radion and connect the adapter to the coupler. You'll need to provide power the wireless adapter as well.
For the Pioneer radio set the settings to HDMI connection type for AppRadio Mode, pair the Bluetooth from phone the radio and go to your display settings on your phone and connect to the wireless adapter.
PM me if you need more help.

What would you change about Dex?

I've been swaying back and forth on buying a Dex. In Canada, the retail price is very high ($250...although there are some deals).
I'm curious what owners/testers thought should have been included/excluded? I'd personally liked to have seen video-over-usb-c, an audio output, and a more approachable pricepoint.
Thoughts?
the price is insane, will not even consider at this price point....but im seeing some chinese knock offs that lead me to believe there is no proprietary/special hardware that makes this functionality happen. Maybe even a simple usb-c, 3-way usb-power / HDMI MHL adapter would work? Anyone tested MHL adapter yet?
I bought these.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074MYLP9C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This one does not work with DEX, it can mirror your screen that is all.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074SXBZ3S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is a cheapish Chinese one. I can confirm that this works as a DEX station, the one main difference between this one and the official one is the Ethernet lan port is missing.
From what I have found online there is a chip in the dock that tells the Samsung device to switch between the Dex mode or mirror mode. The only other option you have if you want to use the first type of usb-c dongle is to root and use a custom kernel that has been baked into a custom ROM.

I got mine for under $100 through B&H. Brand new.
The knockoff would be about $30 less and I'd much prefer to stick with the original dex station.
so far I´d change:
Hi Y'all.
I'd like a display port to complement the HDMI port.
A dock with a more case friendly design would also have been appreciated.
It took me a while to figure out the apostrophe on a physical keyboard.
"I'd, Y'all, can't" ect. gave me some weird responses.
A USB-C hub would have been nice to complement the other ports.
Apart from this I'm a happy camper.

Elo.

Can someone try a USB-C to HDMI adapter with Red Magic 3S ?

Hello, can someone try a USB-C to HDMI adapter with Red Magic 3S please ?
I know Red Magic 3 doesn't work with USB-C to HDMI adapters ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/red-magic-3/help/usb-c-to-hmdi-output-t3935662 ) but what about Red Magic 3S ? Did they fix this issue ?
Thank you
Actually tried this a couple days ago, no dice :/

@nabbed I know devices need to have USB 3.0 to allow HDMI over USB-C but official Red Magic specs website shows that Red Magic 3S (and Red Magic 3) have USB 3.0, gsmarena has tested Red Magic 3 port and it only has a USB 2.0 speed so Red Magic lied, and I wondered if they lied again with 3S and yes they do (and it seems they also lied about RM3 bundled charger speed in specs)

I don't think you understand how this works.
USB 3.0 has nothing to do with HDMI out. It's not in the specs of USB 3.0.
One only needs to have the hardware inside the phone to support the HMDI video out, which Red Magic never claimed to have. You have been duped by your own ignorance.
Also, if Nubia says that Red Magic supports 3.0, then it supports 3.0. No one lied. GSMARENA testers are idiots. Just look at their review. It's atrocious and is full of inaccuracies.

Wow, why so much hate ? Calm down pal, I'm just asking a question.
Firstly, video-out over USB-C has been released in september 2014 with USB 3.1 and is called Alternate Mode (USB 3.1 also adds Power Delivery options for 15 or 100Watts and 5 or 10Gbps for data transfer) so Alternate Mode/video out over USB-C doesn't work on USB-C with USB 2.0, check this USB-C compatibility table, you can also read this detailed "DisplayPort Alternate Mode for USB Type-C" explanation on anandtech if you want more information https://www.anandtech.com/show/8558/displayport-alternate-mode-for-usb-typec-announced
Secondly, around May 2019 Red Magic has sent a Red Magic 3 to a YouTuber called Drift0r, he has made a video review and at 16:26 he says that the biggest problem with this phone is that it has no USB-C to HDMI support but he did talk to Red Magic about it and they said that in an upcoming update that feature will be added, so yes Red Magic claimed they will add USB-C to HDMI support on their RM3 but that was in May 2019, now in 2020 and this feature has still not been added with last update neither on RM3S

"if Nubia says that Red Magic supports 3.0, then it supports 3.0" There is no proof it has USB 3, if you have a proof show it here

I don't think there's hate here. But still bro, USB 3.0 or 3.1 doesn't necessarily mean that it will have video out hardware.
If that youtube man is correct and it's there, just disabled, then you need to talk to this man.

He works for Nubia, and he has helped to deliver messages to Nubia engineers before. So perhaps he could help.

Smartphones requires 3 things to be compatible with USB-C to HDMI adapters :
1)You are right that smartphones need a video-out hardware, but you miss something, previously phone makers had to add a video-out hardware chip to the SOC to add video-out support (like a SlimPort or a MHL chip) but now video-out hardware comes directly in the SOC since Snapdragon 835, check this video from Mobile World Congress 2017 in DisplayPort booth https://youtu.be/ZWlkkM8SkDQ
2)But you can see that not all Snapdragon 835/845/855 smartphones are compatible with USB-C to HDMI adapters, what we can see is that ALL smartphones that are compatible with USB-C to HDMI adapters have USB 3, and there is NO smartphone at all with USB 2 and USB-C to HDMI support. So smartphones need the hardware (included since 835) but also USB 3 because DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C uses USB 3 High Speed Data Path defined Pins on USB-C, not the USB 2 pins, so video-out is not possible with USB 2
3)The last thing needed is to just software activate the video-out support, 99% of smartphones with 835/845/855 and USB 3 have video out except very few like Google Pixels, they should all support video-out (at least from Pixel 2) but Google has intentionally software disabled video-out on them, a commit on Google Git has been found in the Android source code that disables video-out over USB-C in Pixel 4, see here https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/11/03/pixel-4-has-usb-video-output-disabled-in-software Also Sony Xperia XZ1 had video-out feature out of the box but then Sony released a software "update" that disabled video-out feature. On the opposite LG G7 had no video-out support out of the box but then LG software activated video-out with Android 9 software update.
Thank you for the link, I will send him a PM and hope he can help but again, as there is absolutely no phone with USB 2 that support video-out, if RM3/RM3S only have USB 2 it would not be possible to add video-out support just with software update because of hardware limitation

Droid Razr. USB 2 and HDMI out ? but I know that doesn't count.
Don't expect any changes for the 3S. Best you can hope for is stuff put on the next one. Soon as they launch a phone they no longer develop for it other then simple bug fix's and moving stuff from the CN ROM to the EU and NA ROMs. Give the illusion that they are working on it
I am very disappointed in the support for this phone. The Galaxy Note 10, effectively, was the same price as this one recently(albeit no dual sim), as well as the One Plus 7 Pro. Lesson learned for me. Stay away from gimmicky phones, regardless of the specs.

What seems to be your boggle?
Man if you can get the Note 10 for $475 or got one for even $599 and you picked the RM3S over the Note 10 I don't think the phone is the problem.
This phone is what it is. What you see is what you get. Don't buy it expecting any support or updates. It's not going to happen. Just be happy if it's functional. Nubia has proven to be absolutely unreliable on everything and will flat out lie about stuff. The RM3 and RM3S will never get an Android 10 ota. And they will also never get a security patch update. Time to just accept it. The one thing that could save it a dev community is all heading over to the ROG2. The most you can really hope for is they might port some stuff over from the CN to the global or NA. And even then I think they pretty much pulled the plug on that since they started working on there next device.
The support and update just won't ever come.

And even then I think they pretty much pulled the plug on that since they started working on there next device.
The support and update just won't ever come.

Agree, Red Magic 1 is still on Android 8 since 2018 and never received Android 9 update and Red Magic Mars, Red Magic 3 and Red Magic 3S are still on Android 9 and it seems they will not receive Android 10. Also, I don't expect neither RM3 or RM3S to get USB-C to HDMI support with an update, I believe what GSMArena says, they tested its port and the USB-C port is only a USB 2 but USB 3 is required for USB-C to HDMI support, maybe RM4 will come with HDMI out (it should be obvious to support it for a gaming phone)
Red Magic even shared on Twitter Drift0r's YouTube RM3S video review on which he says he has contacted Red Magic and they said to him that they will add HDMI out feature with next update and someone in the comments of the twitter post has wrote "USB C to HDMI is coming too. Nice. ", Red Magic didn't even react to this comment. https://twitter.com/redmagicgaming/status/1133009969962471424
Even now they shared a video of next Nubia Red Magic 5G with a "low latency" (very funny) wireless screencasting feature and a lot of people in the comments say it has latency anyway because of wireless. Red Magic seems to not care at all about what their customers want https://www.gsmarena.com/nubia_red_magic_5g_showcased_in_live_demo-news-41125.php
Lots of opinions in here. Just poking my head in to ask, does RedMagic6Pro support and if so, how? I got it to work on an old hdmi Sony TV and this "covert" dock (for my switch) and it works perfect on the switch but it's funky on here. Now if the rm6 has options to toggle it, where would I find it?
Magic OS is quite funky and I'm not a fan, but it does the job. But it's confusing and finding things can be difficult so I apologize if it's a simple answer I'm not seeing. Thank you!

USB C to 3.5mm adapter

Hello,
My mom purchased a Samsung S20 FE unlocked from the Samsung website, and we're having some trouble getting the audio going through the USB C adapter. The adapter that was purchased was this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VF6NSZZ This is the only one I could find on Samsung's website, and compared the part number to confirm it's the same item (EE-UC10JUWEGUS). However, plugging this device in only sometimes gets us the sound. The first one we purchased, there would be a big hissing sound when it worked, but most times it wouldn't work. The second one we purchased, there was a clicking sound and it would skip every other second in music.
I came across this reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Galaxy_S20/comments/ih0e7n/usbc_to_35mm_adapter_question_how_to_enable/) and confirmed that the option OP disabled, was not enabled on my moms phone. However, we still continued having the above problems.
Things we've tried -
testing both adapters with my note 8 and note 9 devices
using different three different headphones
I came across this other highly positively reviewed adapter, and I'm debating purchasing it - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F2DTTGT/
Has anyone had this issue? Anything else I can try?
Hi ChinDChin, this one works for me:

I can also confirm that the adapter that came with my essential ph-1 works with my s20fe which makes me think you need one with a dac built into it

Correct. You need an adapter with a DAC.
I only found this out a couple of days ago, as my oneplus adapter wouldn't work.
This one works fine with my Verizon S20 FE 5g UW
