Photo quality - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Real Life Review

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

Went to local galaxy unpacked event and tried the camera. PROMISING! Definitely better than the whole S20 ultra fiasco

Had a hands on, the focus issue is completely gone. This is by far the fastest one yet. Pictures are also a lot better than the S20 ultra....over contrast and sharpening is not there and looks to be finally what they promised.
Unfortunately at the mall the zoom lens didn't look as good to me....still pics at a distance were good, but anything with a a slight movement was a mess with the periscope camera. Also, the images were terrible compared to note 10 plus from 2x-4.9x, which I'm assuming was just a crop from the main pic as opposed to the telephoto from Note 10 plus. Ultra wide I preferred note 10 plus for some reason....tad more in the image and more details.
Just my 2 cents...getting free buds live , 256 gb storage, Exynos 990 for 1225 dollars in UAE - edit * freaking thing is only 8GB RAM at this price.....insane

108mp picture from Danny winget

I use a program called Cam Scanner a lot.
Things like asset tags and some field documents/plates on turbines, et al.
Never had an issue with clarity until the S20 Ultra. The focus uniformity across the frame, frankly, sucks! With the camera app I can usually find a somewhat happy medium. But I don't like it and on a $1450 flagship device, it's unacceptable!
HOPEFULLY, the Note20 Ultra does NOT have this issue. Is it a dealbreaker? Depends on how much better "everything else" is compared to the S20 Ultra. Since e-sim is about as useful as tits on a bull in the US, I have to carry two phones, the second being an iPhone 11 Pro Max. Camscanner works beautifully on that.
Thanks to the pandemic, my live gig days have come to a fat screeching halt, so recording live music isn't happening so any enhancements to video in that regard aren't going to matter much. Alternate audio sources may get rid of the metallic rain sound when recording outdoors in the wind, and I will be curious as to what mics will work. That could be interesting.

Some photos from local best buy

Pretty much if you like Samsung's photos on previous phones then you'll like the ones from this phone. The photos have the same look i.e. colorful and bright exposure.
Night photos look slightly improved and so does tele photos.

Definite improvement on night mode from s20u..
(Exynos)

Microsoft's Lens Scanner does a great job, too! Especially if you're heavily invested in Microsoft apps like Office 365.

Holy smokes, the Note 20 Ultra's pic is MUCH better in that side-by-side comparison.

I took quick photos of my dog in normal Auto Mode to compare how my S20 Ultra (Left) processed the image vs. how the new Note 20 Ultra (Right) fared. I already knew my S20U struggled in less than perfect lighting & with fur textures, so I was curious if the N20U did too.
I'm glad the Note 20U has significantly improved processing right out of the box (even after the S20U's many updates, which did very little). Is it actually possible for the the S20U to be updated to be on par with the N20U? From walking around & taking random everyday photos, the differences in image processing have been pretty staggering between the 2 phones despite their similar hardware.

I feel you there ... I'm local 33 in la... I miss working the shows too.

With you on the 10+ comparison. I was shocked actually to see my 10+ take better pics

Disappointed in the pictures compared to my note 10+. The pictures seem overly exposed and really colorful

The night mode is terrible compared to my s20 ultra! I'm starting to think something is wrong. I took the same photo at the same time and the s20 ultra is clear while the Note is grainy and no detail. Anyone else having this issue?

I'm getting the opposite N20U better than S20U both exynos

Note 10 + still Image quality Tops Note 20 Ultra Images for me
Note 10+ is the more interesting comparison vs S20+. Have them all
With all but images beyond ^ 5X and Night Mode the 10+ pics are just richer and more vibrant.
Saw this on a number of UTube comparisons so have checked repeatedly.
Sure enough it's true.

Absolutely! Especially at 10X, the S20U blows the Note 20 Ultra out of the water.
And space zoom, 50X on both phones looks nearly identical.
This is definitely a downgrade especially if you had the 16GB RAM on the S20 Ultra.
This is essentially an S20 Ultra, aka gimped, with a bigger screen and s-pen.
Definitely disappointed, usually the Note series stands out from the S series. This is essentially a sidegrade at best and if you're noticing these things, a big disappointment.
Kind of silly my nearly year old 11 Pro Max camera trashes this one, especially video and night mode. iOS 14 night mode is incredible!

The funny thing is if you read note 10's plus topic for the camera it turns out s10s camera was better, if you read, s10s topic it turns out note 9s camera was better... You get the point, hah? To me the camera is great, and don't forget that it's just the start of the note 20s life cycle and the quality will improve significantly with the software updates.

Who cares about nokia phones you can only take good pictures with it. There's no ecosystem, they are worthless.
Samsungs always had a terrible time with lowlight shots.
Note 3 is abysmal as Samsung always has that over processed cartoon like gel appearance.
Was hoping for much better but the Z3 woops it.

I really don't get why samsung don't work on improving the low-light performance; it's been their cameras' achilles heel for like forever.
There is another website that compares the low light performance of N4 against Z3, iphone 6 plus and butterfly 2 (from htc).
http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/102/4914690/1/rv/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review/
It is actually a blind comparison of the 4 phones (named A, B, C and D), but the general consensus is that A =butterfly 2, B=iphone6p, C=N4, D=Z3.
In my opinion, N4 outperforms iphone6p in many cases, and is at least as good as Z3, while Z3 absolutely tanks in the last competition.
That's why I have much more faith in the low light performance of N4 and looking forward to it

sorry but imo N4 look the worst after Butterfly 2 , IP6 plus looks it has good color reproduction under low light with good details , N4 has horrible over processing with denoise filter and ****ty contrast ( like all samsung phones = ****ty low light performance ) , Z3 looks ok better than N4 and even it doesn't have OIS
Nokia still the king of low light photography

yep its sucks , cams on Samsung phones works great with good light but as soon u go inside with medium lighting the images will become really bad and with low light the images turns horrible specially with night mode on u will get unusable bad image with no details at all
White balance is off on all but the lumia. Wonder if WB settings were different between them.
Those images are hardly conclusive. The mobile-review is a rushed review of a pre-production unit with preliminary software. Most importantly, the Note 4 camera isn't less capable. It has OIS and a Sony IMX240 sensor. It is just the software that needs tweaking. This is their first OIS camera so we shouldn't be judging it until the final retail product is out. They may be too conservative with the OIS and instead are using too high ISO and too quick shutter, the opposite of what LG did on its LG G2. And you shouldn't be directly linking to images on another site. It is bad manners. Link the whole review instead.
The E-price shootout is quite encouraging if the C phone is in fact the Note 4. Definitely beats B (supposedly iPhone 6+) in most of the shots and D in the flash shot.
All the images in eprice. Com is inconsistent, each one looks different and not taken from same spot

Based on those reviews it still seems to be an improvement over my note 3. Hopefully it get better from here. But Note still is the better device out of all 4 IMO. So I'm content with the result.

Man, I sure hope those are legit. I've seen many differing photo comparisons and some just make the N4 look horrendous. There was an youtube comparison between a Z3 and an N4 that made the N4 look worse than my N2. Not sure what to believe ATM.
I believe history. Samsungs sensors and features are not the problem. Its the insanely terrible processing that turns medium to lowlight pics into smeared noisy nonsense. For many lowlight is a majority of where they take pics (most social events are dimly lit) Nothing Ive read or seen leads me to believe they even care to fix it.

dont go by that video,i do watched that................that seems to be from some other device rather than note 4 or there might be issues bcos most of the n4 pics he compared seems to be blurred.......................have seen much better n4 pics from mobilereview's russian review and i even checked 100% crops of full res images in comp with ip6+ as provided by them and note 4 has better details and its the clear winner.

Almost N4 low light shots haven't got ISO info. This mean they are software processing, different to iPhone 5S. When taking low light shot, you have to wait some seconds for intergrated photo software tweak it, like Note 3.
iPhone and Z2/Z3 normally push higher ISO to get better low light shot. You will spend less time for each shot.

And who the hell is releasing camera (photo) comparison on YT? Without the jpg files? I call that comparison BS.

About camera?

Hi to all
I have several questions about P20 Pro camera:
1. Did x3 optical zoom and x5 hybrid zoo. Have OIS? (Are they stable like optical zoom on S9+?)
2. Did it recording in 1080p 60fps?
3. Can "light fusion technology " be use for 40mp or just dor 10mp?
4. They didn't tell us so much about video recording. Is video recording better then S9+ or not? (I don't believe to DXO mark, but theysey that P20 Pro have better video recording)
5. Did P20 Pro have better HDR like Pixel Xl 2 and S9?
6. Can I use panorama on RGB sensors (40mp)?
7. I see on Youtube that in Pro mode they have just 3200 ISO, but they show us a 102400 ISO. So the camera is not with last software update?
8. Main camera (40mp) dont have OIS? And is AIS like EIS?
Zoom sensor has OIS. The other two don’t.
Light fusion is 10mp Output.
Dxomark rated the video equal to the Pixel 2 scoring overall. They did say it was one of the best at video.
Yes, hence the 114 dxomark photo score. It doesn’t need the Pixel way of making photos using HDR+.
The ISO might be in Auto Mode at that level, but it can do it.
AIS uses some EIS and then AI to correct photo. Huawei say it’s better than OIS which wouldn’t surprise me if true.

Camera samples from the devices at the launch.
All the 10MP samples I've seen look excellent. Certainly better than anything currently on the market.
Even in good light, the 40MP shots appear to be poorly lit and also lacking contrast .. I suspect due to both the huge amount of data being read by the camera software, and the very large resulting image, both metering and post processing are highly suspect. I'm sure it will improve with time, but I suspect that it would benefit from Huawei's next-gen SoC.
Zoom lens / sensor photos are surprisingly decent, as is the hybrid zoom.
What I'm most interested in seeing is image stacking / HDR on the main sensor's 10MP output, if it can do that. Huawei's image stacking / HDR has been a lot weaker than Samsung / Google / Open Camera etc previously.
P.S. For anyone wondering, from what I've been told the main 1/1.7" sensor is a Panasonic one.
I have S8 and S9 os not big difference in camera. SO I would like to buy P20 Pro, BUT it really need to be very good camera much better then S8. But what I see from Forbes I was very sad... The P20 Pro is not big improvement from s8, S9 and Iphon x...
https://www.forbes.com/sites/bensin...tout-huawei-p20-pro-vs-iphone-x/#bfc5e745d33b
And if the 40mp camera dark in good light, and you can use it for good photo, why then buy this phone? Why did they put 40mp if they dont have "Renesansa" pgoro and video?
P.S. lets meka a Group in telegram about P20 Pro...
The 10MP output looks a lot better than anything on the market, including your S8 and S9.
It has 40MP because that's the sensor's native resolution. This sensor is used in cameras usually, not phones ... and they have far more sophisticated metering, lenses and dedicated image processing hardware, and can make some use of the 40MP - albeit even then the images usually look far better at a lower multiple of the native resolution, or downscaled. Dynamic range is far better - also seen on the P20 Pro.

But we're not going to get anything that compares even vaguely well to a half decent camera until we go to larger sensors still, or multi sensor arrays. As I said elsewhere, at least one major smartphone maker is working on a prototype of a phone with a 1" sensor ... whether it sees the light of day will possibly depend on how many units the P20 Pro sells.

Thx for you a answer
So they are not possibility to make with update 40mp much better, or good like 10 mp?
I think if they put better pixel, better sensors like they put and 40mp camera then we can take big photo with very good details when zoom in photo, and very good quality photo. I aspect to see much much much better photo then S9+, pixel xl 2, iphon x... with so much better shadows, lights, and etc...
So 40mp is jusy marketing trick?
What do you want 40MP output for? It's highly unlikely you need 10MP.
You realise 4K is 8MP? Assuming you don't have an 8K TV or monitor yet (33MP)?
How many people do large, super high DPI prints of mobile phone photos ... not many I'd wager.
40mp images. Shot in raw. Say no more. These are amazing.

So as far as I’m concerned, the P20 Pro has to be better than all of these types of shots. I did have the Huawei Mate 10 Pro that took some amazing pics too. So what I have decided to do, is to focus heavily on the Huawei P20 Pro when it arrives and create very specific and detailed posts on it , including the camera with lots of tips too.
I am fairly confident the P20 Pro will be better from the samples already shared that I’m selling my S9+, even though I actually really like it.

Think back to the PureView tech. On that I believe the camera produced a 5 or 8MP image. In most cases that's the mode you used, even though you could go for the full-sized image. That often had a lot more noise, as the whole point of the 40MP is to use the data from 4 pixels to produce a cleaner 10MP image.
I took a few 40MP images but Google scales it down to 16MP on high-resolution mode (the mode I've chosen as otherwise I'd quickly use up all my storage) so at some point, I'll take a few more and host them elsewhere to share.
Frankly, we've moved on from playing the numbers game where more pixels is anything people cared about. 40MP here is purely to allow Huawei to do its clever stuff (especially the AI assisted night mode) and not just to sound better than the competition, even though I'm sure that's a rather good side-effect for the marketing department!
There are a lot more photos added to the gallery today, including some more from other people who attended the launch.
I am yet to experiment with RAW and the pro mode, and I do wonder if I'll need to as it is such a good phone for just picking up and shooting, letting the phone do its work. The scene detection works very well, although occasionally it may pick a mode you think isn't what you wanted to capture (e.g. a building where it goes for 'blue sky mode' to boost the colour of the sky) although it doesn't ruin the photo. Plus you can turn it off if you prefer. I don't see any need to yet.
hey @jonmorris,
How's the dynamic range compared with the pixel 2/galaxy s9? Maybe, if you own one of them you could post some comparison pictures .

i found the stock camera app to be pretty poor coming from a pixel 2 like it was almost dealbreaking. I also have an essential phone that needed a google cam port to be usable. So i went to the gcam repo and spent a good hour trying all the versions from arnova, cstark etc. and i found that the only one that actually works is from BSG for the Mi 8 and the quality is night and day. i posted on reddit about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/razerphone/comments/9rv2ed/google_cam_port_quality_vs_stock_app_vs_pixel_2/
meh
There is no 60 frames-per-second 1080p video nor is there 16 by 9 aspect ratio for photos they are also blurry, the zoom is okay though I guess.

Picture taken with it, does an amazing job at medium-low lighting
Razer's photo app does pretty good, minus not having slow motion, beating all my previous phones in clarity, quality and ability to take photos of an always moving 2 year old with very minimal, if any, motion blur, and in low light without flash and no visible grainyness. But to boost your cameras performance, Gcam works wonders (slow motion still does not work) Beware of file sizes of videos, though... An 8 minute 4k video of my daughter was a whopping 2.5gb... and when you take photos at the same time you're recording, they come out much darker than just taking a photo by itself. Photo quality is outstanding, taking bright, clear photos in low light with no motion blur what so ever, and with no visible grainyness or loss of color accuracy. People with high end iPhones and Samsung devices were amazed at the photo quality of the Razer 2 compared to their phones...so a big plus for this phone. I have NO idea what people we're talking about when they said the camera was crap... As far as the photo album app, I think the one that comes with the phone totally sucks, it's the Google albums app, which for me is over complicated, I have no idea how to browse it, or organize it, or create folders, or move them to folders...so, I downloaded a very simple, easy to use gallery app that fits all my needs. VERY simple to understand, I can move things around, create new folders, etc. If you're interested in it, here's the link.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobiletools.gallery.pro
It reminds me of the simpler album apps that came with earlier versions of Android Galaxy phones, which is what I'm used to.
EDIT- 10/16/19
Finally found a camera app that makes full use of the camera. Gcam
Version 6.2.030. greatly increased clarity, amazing low light performance, night mode, multiple resolutions to choose from, hdr, hdr+, 4k video, bokke effect in portrait mode, which makes a HUGE improvement in photo dramatic effect when taking pictures of people, and most importantly, to me at least, VERIFIED WORKING SLOW MOTION AND TIME LAPSE... Which for some STUPID REASON Razer has OMITTED from even their latest software update, posted only a couple days ago. Link below for the gcam mod.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rAgBKJ9ZixrsfP2_29HHJabm-2g9etLY/view?usp=drivesdk
I cannot recommend you use this gcam mod enough! It's EXACTLY what this phone was missing all along
Not my work, BTW. Simply pointing a link at someone else's work.

Hey, a Razer Phone 2-specific version of GCam was uploaded to https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/ the other day. I downloaded it, and it's so much faster than the MI8 version. It's bloody quick. No more loading ring when I'm taking a picture. Just a flash as the picture is taken.
The quality is "okay" but not that good
I hope they'll do better in the future .

How do you like the Razer 2 w/gcam compared to the Pixel 2?
I just installed the RP 2 gcam from the link and only saw a lowlight/indoors performance difference while indoors. Once I went outside there was a bit of a split decision. On one hand the dynamic range of gcam was a lot better and maintained clear details in the image. There were a couple of occassions where the stock camera app took a more appealing picture. Most of the pics while outside in good natural light were almost identical; only zooming in all the way and searching would you see the difference. Again, that goes back to the dynamic range and how the apps process the images once you take the picture. At some point we need to stop splitting hairs on the most minor detail that really isn't discernable unless you zoom in 300% an search vice when you look at the normal zoom image. I have noticed however, the RP2 does over process more often than not, leading to it softening the image way too much causing a slight blur in the details. But other times it takes really good pictures.
I just uninstalled the gcam app now. I don't know what happened but was using the camera a few hours after installing and testing it out and I noticed major artifacts, color distortion and image distortion when I am looking at the screen and moving the phone around to different subjects. I also notice it having a real hard time adjusting the exposure and balance. The removal of the gcam app hasn't seemed to fix anything. I may have to reset the phone to get it functioning again.

Not bad...
I just got the phone, and knew going into it the camera was going to be bad (doubly bad considering I was coming from an LG V20!). What I didn't expect was just how bad HDR is on the stock app. It's rather laughable. The first image is a normal photo on the telephoto lens. The second photo is an HDR shot on the same lens. I plan to play around with Gcam, but HDR will never see the light of day on my stock app. Lol
Not as good as my motorola z2 force. Really, very bad! I can only play games now. . . . Maybe gaming phones can only play games.

Question First impressions

Got my Edge 20 a couple of days ago. Also have a OP Nord 2.
The front on Edge 20 looks really nice with symmetrical bezels and a nice looking punchole (compared to the ugly ring on Poco F3). However, I regret buying the version with a white back since it looks a bit tacky. Thinking about returning it and buying a black one.
Build quality feels better on Nord 2 due to the thin design of Edge 20.
The screen is very nice but I see not benefit of 144hz refresh rate (compared to 120hz or 90hz).
Performance and fluidity is really good. Feels almost like a flagship in that regard. Perhaps Nord 2 is a bit faster but only by a hair. Animations feels nicer on Edge 20.
Haptics are way better on Nord 2. Motorola used a cheap vibration motor on Edge 20.
Battery life on Edge 20 seems better than expected given the fairly small battery and large screen (with high refresh rate). However, it is too early to draw any sharp conclusions on battery life.
If I compare Edge 20 and Nord 2. Dayligt camera performance from main sensor more or less the same in terms of details. However, I think photos from Edge 20 are nices looking due to better white balance. Photos from Nord 2 have a yellow tint. Low light performance from the main camera is better on Nord 2 (brighter photos with more detail) However, it is possible to install gcam on Edge 20 and it supports all three cameras (BSG). This app improves low light performance for all sensors. Especially, photos from the telephoto camera looks much better with gcam. I think 3x zoom is very usueful and actually more useful than 5x. https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-bsg/

Thanks for these first impressions. I will be receiving my Edge 20 after a few days! Waiting to check it out.
Can you post some Camera sample of Stock app vs Gcam on Edge20? That would be great!
Also what is the SOT you are getting as of now?

The battery drops 11% per hour when the sceeen is on according to accubattery.
First is stock 3x zoom, the secod is BSG gcam 3x zoom without any tweaks. Results should be even better if someone releases a custom XML for Edge 20.

Just got mine a few days ago. Battery seems to have settled now. I'm getting 5 to 6 hours of SOT. Battery drains about 10% overnight. I think because it's searching for signal.
Some pics come out better with stock camera, others with BSG gcam. Depends on the situation. Overall the cameras are good. Not quite flagship level, but pretty good.
Only gripe I have so far is that the wifi range seems rather weak, especially compared to eg. OnePlus. Near my router is fine, but when I even just sit just outside on the terrace it keeps dropping and reconnecting. My OnePlus keeps streaming video without any issues in these places. This is a real bummer and I'm not sure if I can live with that.
Other than that I love how light it is. Love the screen and the side mounted fingerprint scanner. It's very fast and snappy.
How about Hi-Res audio support? I have LDAC supporting oppo enco M31 bluetooth earphones. Would I able to enjoy LDAC through powerAMP app?
I will send back my Edge 20 tomorrow. Could not get used to the ugly white back and I do not want to use this phone with a case (the USP is how thin and light it feels in the hand naked). I may order a black one later. If the haptics would have been better I would have bought a black one ASAP.
How is the WiFi reception overall?
Wifi is decent, not exceptional. On par with Samsung mid rangers in my experience.
Only brand I owned so far with great wifi range is OnePlus. Both Nord and 8 Pro had great range.

What about LDAC support and Hi-Res audio support? If not in-built, can you able to enjoy LDAC through third party apps?
I don't know tbh. I'm using wired OnePlus bullets connected to the charging port.
It should be fine though. I find the sound pretty good and pretty loud considering it's only got one speaker.
Using headphones the sound is as good as my OnePlus 8 Pro for me.
Does the BSG Gcam work perfectly? As in, do all the modes like Portrait, Night Mode, Time Lapse, Slo-mo, and Photo Sphere Work for all 3 lenses?

I just tried. Still photography works like it should for all three lenses. Portrait and night sight work too.
Video doesn't seem to work at all on the main lense. It's just a black screen. Can't work any of the buttons.
Video only works for the selfie cam.

Maybe will have to try some other Mod which might work
Because without video it will get difficult, and I don't want to use the Stock app much.

I'm so stupid... Video works fine on bsg camera. I had focus tracking enabled in settings which the Moto doesn't support apparently. So yes: bsg works fine.
Hey
Its good to hear edge 20 supports gcam with almost everything working
I suggest fellow edge 20 users to use the following gcam and check if these are working
1) 7.3 urnyx v2.1 wichaya v3.1
Or
Gcam 8.1 wichaya (latest)
2) greatness 8.2(latest)
3) camstellar greatness v4
4)Nikita 7.4 v2.0
Or Nikita 8.2 (latest)
5) 8.2 MGC parrot043 V8 from parrot's telegram group
6) tr camera (latest)
My suggestions
use a config file of a famous device (any one plus device) and load it in your gcam app , you can change the settings and aux values as per moto edge 20 later and adjust it so that it can work in moto
Or head to greatness's telegram where

I am currently using the one by BSG v8.1
It works fine for all lenses, except that it produces that weird fisheye distortion with the ultra-wide lens.
Is there any fix for this? Or any alternative?
Yes, disable sabre from

And developer settings

Can someone confirm my observation as below -
The front cam has a fixed focus, causing blur on faces in a selfie which are not at the front. (Even without portrait mode)
This is resulting in useless selfies, as only the front person's face is focused and rest gets blurred.
And if anyone knows any workaround to this, it would be helpful!!
I just tried playing some 4k HDR 60fps demo videos on my Motorola Edge 20 (XT2143-1).
Most of them played fine but few of them (like the ones from the link mentioned below) were way off with lot of saturation so much so that it was difficult to even look at the screen while playing these videos. Tried playing on various apps like Google Photos app, VLC, MX Player, etc. but no luck. These videos are playing fine on other phones (I had checked on Redmi Note 10 Pro & One Plus 9).
LG 4K HDR Demo Chess.mp4
LG 4K HDR Demo - Colors of Journey.mkv
Samsung x RedBull: See the Unexpected HDR
But when I enable the option to "Show refresh rate" or when I turn ON "Disable HW overlays" from 'developer options', videos appear to play fine showing colours properly.
PS. Playing 4K HDR 60FPS videos on Youtube is fine and has no problem. The screenshots come out fine and not affected by this.
I appreciate if anyone who got this phone could check/verify this issue.
Thanks.

Question Cameras in low light are really bad

Smudged detail, really not great. I had the find x5 pro for a while before returning it and there really is no comparison. Quite disappointed.

Really not sure about keeping the phone. On one hand I actually like the fake OxygenOS basically ColorOS. The phone software feels very very polished relative to other androids. Almost like a non buggy MIUI. But the PWM flicker is pretty bad.
Cameras seem fine in my limited testing. Although OnePlus has always taken a couple months to fix their cameras.
I've taken some great pics so far...as with any phone the situation sometimes requires you to alter some settings, that's what pro modes for.
This phone will come good, the hardwares just too good to not exploit with some good ROMs.
I was hesitant at first comparing it to my 8 pro but I'm so in now..

Totally agree!
in good light the camera is fine, it is medium to low light where I am seeing a drop off vs say the S22 or Pixel. For example seems pretty bad for smudging fur detail on pets.

Have you tried the other settings in manual mode ?
As a point and shoot it'll get better but if you expect the world without any work it's just not going to happen mate. Not Vs an S22. I mean that's an expensive phone, it should be better, the pixel is using the base software and it's Google again it should be better..
That being said I'm positive I can get better than any point and shoot camera phone with this phone
This camera has a lot of features, settings, and cool picture possibilities....Hasselblad ftw
What I have learnt from experience with phones is to now buy it for the camera , I will just get one mirror less camera which will last longer than any camera phones for a long time
I think it is only in comparison to the competition that it falls short. My torture test for any new phone is photos of our cats indoors and I am seeing more smudging and a less clwean image than the Pixel of S22 Ultra offers and yes I have owned both and still actually have the S22U.

Try some different settings. Smudges may occur due to HDR being on and a slight movement, could just be the software that OnePlus has made. It could just need a few updates which I'm sure may occur.
ISO could be too high too.
Use pro mode, set the shutter speed as low as possible Vs an ISO of 200-800, should help...find the sweet spot depending on the light you have.. it's manual but honestly my pics come out better when I have control. My DSLR I'd never let the camera choose for me..

Again this is point and shoot.
Ask any actual photographer if they rely on automatic lens settings, the vast majority will say no they won't so why would you rely on it for your phone? They all have the capability yet we tend to believe some plum who's pointings and shooting? Makes no sense to me
I'm not saying that the results are incorrect as I've not used them phones, but relying on this test is testing one thing and that's the automatic settings chosen by the software on the phone.
That's it.
Give all these phones to a photographer and get them to use settings based on the scene they have Infront of them, then check the results, I think you'll see a different outcome
For the record I used to be a photographer for a living in a previous life. I almost always though just use my phone in auto mode as a point and shoot, have just never embraced manual mode (or even Av mode for that matter) on a phone.

I take a lot of astro photograph's, both with my DSLR / telescope and purpose built astro camera.. but also my phone.
I need to change some things when I take a night shot, especially of the sky.
I think if you give it a shot (no pun intended) you'll be surprised at the results.
it will take months before sensor potential is used at its fullest with Gcam, and everyone knows these have infinite issues with white balance etc for years, so those kind of flagships won't ever shoot close to what cheaper older flagships can already do after years of gcam configs development

I agree besides gcam, it's just unstable, things not working like wide angle, slow motion.
But for a point and shoot it's the simpler option.
I think Vs pro mode you'd get better on the stock app.

oneplus explicitly stated they remove access to aux cameras in OOS12, no one pays flagship price for a point and shoot and nevermind what comes out at the end experience, u can do that on a 200$ Xiaomi and get 95% satisfaction for social media and casual browsing on large screens
