Introducing myself - Introductions

Hi guys and gals.
I'm here to learn how to hack my new Xiaomi Pad 5. The MIUI is awful and sometimes overrides my defaults. Although the hardware is good. I don't trust neither Xiaomi nor Google.
I'm rather a newbie to Android (before my iPhones I had Nexus 5). Recently coming from Apple devices. I decided to switch system because Apple did me wrong and I was a good customer. I don't want to emphasize here but Apples behaviour is rather disturbing.
At the moment my base is Switzerland. I'm native Italian and German speaking and I know some other languages. I'm rather old you'll say but my mind is young.
So far i learned that I've to install ADB on the Mac. Than TWRP on Pad 5. I like to research.
The greeting message in this board was appealing and gave me a good feeling. I'll look around here.
I want to install Magisk. It seems rather interesting.
Have a wonderful day y'all.
Best.

Hello ethical_haquer
Thank You very much for Your kind words. I appreciate it very much.
It's the first time I'm in such a forum.
Honestly when I saw the MIUI and it's behaviour I was concerned about the privacy issues and I "panicked" a bit. I knew that Google spies on us and I was prepared. But these people from Xiaomi are even worse it seems. They make me troubles with the VPN and the private DNS. Fortunately Browsec has the feature of always on.
In order to get developer USB access and backup the device in my old MBP I needed to register with Xiaomi and you know what they gave me an id starting with triple 6. Rather weird
Here is summertime I have a lot to do and enjoy the summer biking Probably I'll start in Autumn with this project
As I found out the device could be bricked "messing" around with rooting and ROM's. I need to research more to be more sure to take the risk.
I'll surf here and see if there's a "save" way or do You know a safer way? I know only taxes and death are for sure but I would appreciate Your opinion very much in order to understand and evaluate even better.
Have a nice day.

It sure is!
What are you planning to try out on your phone? Don't be to worried about bricking it, although not uncommon it's mostly do to people not understanding what they're doing. If you just want to root it I would flash Magisk. Although honestly I wouldn't bother with rooting it before you install a custom ROM. Which will remove lots of the crap-ware and spy-ware that's built in. A custom ROM will run faster too. Once again, feel free to ask any questions!

It's a tablet Xiaomi pad 5.
Than the question security..
It's really not easy to find out the best

ATT N1 Best MOD

Hey Guys,
Blast me as I know you will --- I just got my n1 for ATT last week after converting from a BB9700;
Questions -
(1) After rooting what is the best mod to do --- everyone has something to say buy I am debating from Cynagen vs ModaCo..
(2) Radio upgrades, Is there a new n latest one for my verison of N1
!!
Try "Search"......and wrong section to post this...
I was in the same situation as you! Just got rid of my 9700 and got a N1
I've been playing with Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and more recently, 5.0.6.1-testing with the new .33.2 Undervolted/Overclocked/Extra RAM kernel. Everything is very snappy compared to stock and I couldn't be happier
I'm still looking around for radio roms

I'm going to recommend that you NOT ROOT YOUR N1.
Stick with the un-rooted phone for as long as you can.
First determine WHY you want to root.
Do you know shell scripting? You know much/little about Unix/Linux? Are you a power user? Are you an iPhone iBasher?
I've rooted and unlocked all of my HTC phones for the past few years, because I know what I'm doing. I read and read and read, searched searched searched these forums for reasons why I should or shouldn't do this or that.
You are new to these forums. New to Androidâ„¢.
I say you should play with your new phone for a few months.
Continue reading here about Cyanogen, Modaco, Enomther, apps2sd, rooting, radios, overclocking, etc.
If and when you learn ENOUGH by reading, searching, slimming, and searching and reading some more ... if you feel you want to root your Nexus One - by all means, DO It MAN!

I will tell you why 95% of people want to root on the Nexus One. No need to ask a prospect.
The reason is because they want cyanogenmod!
You advice is poor rooting is child play compared to 360 modding.
N1 modding is key to enjoying ones phone.
I have to admit, I rooted my Nexus right away.
Having said that, I spent almost a year on my G1 without rooting it. At first I didn't know it was an option. After I started reading about it, I started to realize that it was probably a wise thing to do. It then took me a few weeks of reading to figure out what I actually wanted to do to my phone before I took the leap and finally rooted it and installed CM which made my G1 experience exciting again.
I mention all this because I agree with OrganizedFellow. Spend some time getting to know how Android works before rooting and adding new features. It will help you appreciate the hard work of the devs even more when you do put custom ROMs on your phone.
If you can't wait, I recommend CM. As for the radio, if your phone doesn't lose 3G and stays connected like it should, don't worry about changing the radio. I "had" to change my radio to try getting rid of my 3G issues that the phone shipped with.

in contrast, if youre not super comfortable with going through the whole process just dip your toes in the water first by trolling forums and reading, you can after all brick your phone. I agree with organizedfellow, take your time and find out why and what benefits. i have not rooted yet but leaning closer as i read more and find that i really need the tethering in case im stuck with no wireless while out on a job (also the different color trackball would be sweet). Out side of those im pretty happy with everything stock, add to it with the rumors of himem coming in a future ota update i think i will be set....just that damn tethering...
You cant go wrong with any ROM available right now, but I highly suggest you try Enomther's ROM as well.

are you serious? nobody said anything about the comparison of rooting an android device (software) to modding an xbox 360 (hardware).
So by your logic, someone should jump right into modding their console because replacing the engine in a Boeing 747 is harder.
To the OP. Take the advice of those suggesting that you wait. For starters, you can see if your device has any hardware issues. Yes HTC is warrantying unlocked devices but why not avoid that hurdle and sit on your device for a week or three to just be sure. While you do that, you can read all that you can stomach in these forums and plan your best course of attack.
Welcome to the fray.

+1 that is some great advice, and I would take it. I was just like you and I last week I rooted my ATT N1. I love it, but I must say that I have put a lot more time into it than I expected. I spent a month before I got the N1 looking into this whole scene and I felt that I had the reasons to root. I would at least spend the time searching forums until all your questions that you have are answered. No body is going to be able to give you a perfect ROM that is for you because there are many different ones out there and what is good for one person may not be the best for another.
I would spend the time to get to know everything before you get going. I would say I know my way around technology pretty well, but if I didn't have the nice folks from this forum I would of had a very hard time with things. When people tell you to "search" they really aren't trying to be rude. To root your phone is a personal choice that only you can make. You are the one that spent the money and people spend a bunch of time making our HTC using lives that much greater.
I spent almost 4 hours last week rooting and unlocking and I have spent easily 30-40 since then learning all that I can learn and I must say that for me it was the right decision because I learned a bunch of things about my phone and now when I have a problem I am comfortable that I can find a way to fix it myself. If I don't then I know where to turn to "search" for help.
If you have any questions I would love to help you out although I am far from a master at this trade. I spent a bunch of time and I have a whole notebook of printouts that I have found in various places all over the web (especially this site) I would be more than happy to send them to you, but just do yourself a huge favor and research, research, research, research, and then when you feel you are done research some more. It will help you in the long run.
Have fun with your phone and good luck
By the way I am running the latest Cyanogen and a few other things. I am having a blast with .apk like the HTC keyboard, and I must say that for me wireless tethering is the greatest thing in the world. I have only touched the very end of this world, and I am so thankful for all the people out there that spend countless hours making our lives a lot easier. I had a bunch of help last week and people really didn't need to spend the time to help me out. I have also messed around with the latest Modaco Sense ROM and I like that a lot as well.

How to brew up an android rom for htc hd7

Hello all! I jump from phone to phone when ever I can catch a broken one to fix for nearly free. I recently ran into an HTC HD 7 and am not really vibing to the windows mobile 7, and from what I read there is not currently a pre made rom available for installing android on this device. I am pretty technologically advanced and feel confident given the right direction on how to accomplish this I would be capable of creating one. I have read a lot of information but am some what lost mainly because of some of the lingo terminology, being that I haven't hacked/developed outside of the ios platform. I can program in just about any c based language. Any one got ne thing that can help me out here? If I build one how would I install it or go about uploading it to the device? Thanks in advance for any replies I do greatly appreciate all your time! I apologize about the noobness like I said ios is whats been available to me for the past few years, and now I want android like a kid wants candy!!!

Developers/programmers have been trying to figure out how to dual boot the HD7 (like the HD2) since it came out. The main problem seems to be how WP7 is compiled .NET and C#. WP7 securitys still aren't fully unlocked.
Take a look at the Project Haret thread, they seem to be making some progress at it and if you have the know how, maybe you can contribute.

Thanks for the heads up, appreciate the reply, btw where is the thanks button? sorry this is my second post here. I started to do some research into it. I believe the answer is in the coredll.dll file which may be stating the obvious. I think the way to go about accessing this or at least what I am going to try is an attempt to gain root access with my device tethered to my comp from terminal.

Your welcome! I've read through the whole Project Haret thread and there is alot of information, (some way to complicated for me) trial and error and it looks like as of recent there has been some good progress towards getting Haret to perform and (hopefully) run kernel mode and actually boot the kernel. You might be right, give it a shot or maybe put it on the thread and see what kind of feed back you get on it!
Is your device unlocked yet so that you can gain access to it and try it out?
Personally I would love to see the HD7 dual boot WP7 and Android. Don't get me wrong... I thoroughly enjoy WP7 and love my HD7it's very smooth, fast, stable and not once has it crashed on me. I believe that it would bring a longer life experience to the device and make it that much more versatile, especially since we're nearing the end of official support.
The thanks button should be there now, under the posts.

Ok so I realize I might sound like an idiot considering everything I said can be found within the haret documentation. I originally read something found on google with inaccurate information after you told me about the project, come to find out the information I read was in no way affiliated with the the actual project haha. Forgive my stupidy, I began to read and follow along the documaton for it at htc-linux.org, the only thing I am having issue with is obtaining haretconsole to explore the device. The link on the documentation I believe no longer exists, and I can't find a source anywhere! This is pretty good stuff though thanks for linking me up with it! Have you installed the development tools or haretconsole on a linux OS by chance? I was successful with the developement tools, just need to figure out this haretconsole problem. BTW which desktop OS do you prefer?
Sadly I can't tell if my device is unlocked yet haha. I work at a university doing LAN Administration currently and used my .edu e-mail to register as a developer. I then registered my device but don't see a single difference or maybe I just am doing something wrong. How do you suggest going about that(unlocking it that is, I don't care about it being official, just figured official would be easlier)? Also for the iPhone there is a desktop application which allows you to access the filesystem called iFunBox, is there anything similar for the wp7?
I would just love android lol, I like the HTC HD7 and have always been a fan of HTC products, It definately is pretty smooth and compared to my previous device a 3gs it's lightening fast! 3g isn't supported with the 3gs on t-mobile either. My biggest issue with wp7 is the fact it doesn't do anything I want to be done in a device, I use my mobile browser ALOT and I have never seen a browser period with this many bugs, I installed safari but it's not even the same lol! For the most part I strongly strongly dislike anything related to microsoft, but unfortunately I have to work with the windows platform quite often because of my job. There just such a dirty/shady/grimmy company period, I saw a commercial yesterday advertising bing where they claimed 2 out of three people choose bing over google in a blind study............how can they advertise that when they stole googles code! lol. Also it was a pretty dirty business move of microsoft to do what your talking about with the wp8. They claim there going to continue support on 7 but we both know they all say that and do put the effort towards the legacy system for a short period of time before cutting it. Screwing Nokia out of major growth potential within the U.S. while going back on the promise made to them regarding free upgrades to 8 for 7 devices. I think they feel like there invincible just because they currently run the desktop OS market share. I think their will likely be a major change in the preferred OS within the next 10 years, just because I work in an 30,000 user enterprise that refuses to upgrade their liscensing with microsoft because of windows 8's inability to meet our needs.
Sorry if this message way to long haha

Sorry its taken me so long to get back with you... Been crazy busy!
Unfortunetly I only have Windows OS, PC and Laptop. Funny enough though, I just got my laptop back from the shop a couple weeks ago and I had to have the harddrive replaced. Last week my PC got the BSOD (blue screen of death) and I had to completly wipe and restore it.
My next computer will be a Linux OS forsure. I wish I had one currently to install Haret and play around with it!
The student registration is limited and you can only sideload a max of 3 unasigned apps. You would be better off to fully unlock your device and install a custom rom, this will give you more options to sideload as many unasighned apps as you want in the form of XAP's through IE. Access to the registry/file system and to apply hack and tweaks. you can then familurize yourself with the OS and file system.
I can help walk you through the unlock process, it's pretty easy.
Go to settings, about, more info. post back all the information from that screen. Enter your device into bootloader mode - Power device off, hold down the volume down button and power the device back on, while continuing to hold down the volume down button, this will bring you into BL mode a tri-colored screen. Post back the information from that screen also.We can go from there. The proccess to unlock it basicially is to downgrade the SPL to 3.xxx or lower to install RSPL/HSPL wich will allow flashing of a custom rom.
My IE works excellent. It might be due to what build version that your device is running on. Either way once we get it unlocked there's custom roms running on Tango 8779 build with nice features and the device runs buttery smooth. there's also more mobile browsers available to install once it's unlocked, Opera Mobile,UC browser and a bunch more. There's all kinds of XAP's you can install to cusromize the device and enhance the user experience.
Totaly agree with you on the Android development for WP7 and the above statement regarding MS

Should I root

Does rooting provide any protection against malware or does it make it worse?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Best protection against malware = user.
If you just root, and don't use a custom recovery and custom ROMs, immediately install SuperSU, antivirus, and make sure you protect yourself. SuperSU will at least notify you when an application is trying to use root permissions (aka - modify or access system files) which is not something you want every program doing.
The nice thing about having root is you can change things on your phone a launcher can't touch - boot animation, screen DPI, backup apps like Titanium Backup, and of course clearing out carrier bloatware.
If you do go with a custom recovery, TWRP for example, and flash ROMs, CyanogenMod for example, you are often provided with SuperSU tools and other options as part of the package. Just be very sure you are using images from reputable sources. Lord knows what kind of stuff someone who published a custom ROM could get off your device if they had ill intents.
If you are new to rooting, flashing, etc then I would suggest starting with root access only. Explore what you can do with it, learn it, and be conscious of security as you go. After you are comfortable with it, try CyanogenMod to see how a custom ROM really differs from stock.
Rooting will not give any protection against malware you have to install antivirus or use any app that will help you against this with root
Oh, and to answer the question 'should you root'... We tinker with all the things because we like to. We like knowing how all the things work. We like having more control of all the things. If you don't like this, then don't.

Android is blamed for earning malware for your device but hey! the user of the device is 100% responsible for it. Stop clicking on spammy links and visiting those websites which allow you to earn malware Problem will be solved.
Now rooting. Rooting is the best way to taste your android device at fullest. Use custom ROM, tweak the kernel and much more

I'm not an expert and have found the site to be filled with a lot of great, detailed information including howto instructions if you decide to root. I've rooted a few phones but not the N6 yet. I'm waiting for 5.1 to be available only because I'd rather the OTA download and didn't want it to break root and have to spend a day playing with the phone to get it set up again. Yes, lazy too. My two cents:
There were a few articles back when 5.0 was being released saying how root for this OS would need to bypass much of the built-in security features with this OS version. I don't have a clue if it is true. If I decide to root, I'll go back and see if this is a real problem.
Why root? The exposed framework gives you nice features. Apps can have access to the phone os/hardware that is blocked, for example, you can get the notification LED to work, the battery statistics allow more access so you can see what app is killing your battery. There was one or two other apps I used that required root, can't recall now.
Its easy to say malware is a user problem, some of it is like careless sideloading. But I have no idea if a web page is loading something on my phone. Worse, if you look at the permissions you grant apps, you would load very few on your phone. I find the service providers , like T-Mobile (mine) and Verizion (Fios) to be the worst in asking for access to the phone data for no apparent reason. Does my app to see visual voicemail really need access to my microphone and camera or apps I have loaded on the phone? In my opinion this is spyware as you have no idea what is being uploaded to the app developer. Many of the apps in google play have questionable permission requirements.
That's actually another reason to root, the xposed xprivacy module (haven't used it). Or, using a DNS that will filter malware web site (I think you need root to change the DNS in Android). I'm not sure about the status of xposed on the nexus 6 so you have to read the threads. I don't know why you want to root, so you have to determine if it is worth the effort.
Simple answer is No.
if you're asking if you should root then you do not know what root is and the benefits to it. if you are happy with the phone and all the apps you have suit your needs, then stay as you are and do not download any dodgy apps from the play store

Couldn't agree more. If you have to ask, the answer is no.

Terrible answer! Just because someone doesn't already know something is piss poor justification for telling them not to learn it.
If someone asked the forum if there were any benefits in C#, would you tell them not to bother learning to program, just keep buying Microsoft products?

What a terrible response. is root a programming language?

No, it is the best answer. He is not asking to learn it, he is askign us to make a decision as to whether he should root or not. If he knows the benefits of root, he should make teh decision himself based on the usecase. If he doesn't know the benefits, he should read a sticky thread that lists the benefits. If he doesnt know whether he should root, then he shouldnt because it is not something to um and ahh over.
Rooting in and of itself will have no effect on your getting infected with malware or not. It may affect the degree in which something can muck up your system, because if rooted, that program can get further into the OS than if you were not.
Now, that said, the real meat of it is that if you allow sideloading, that's the one that will let apps install from downloaded files, etc.
Ever notice where they say all the android handsets are getting infected? not here in the US anyways.
If you stick to known downloads and are not trying to get hacked apps, you won't have to worry.
I have to agree with RootSU here, his last paragraph sums it up nicely.

Well, I can't resist using your own logic... If you don't know that root isn't a programming language, you shouldn't root. You probably shouldn't even reply to posts. Further, If you can't understand the example I provided, I'm not going to waste my time and explain it. You should just go read the stickies on the benefits of examples, or something. After all, you shouldn't um and ahh over this.
Facetiousness aside, if you read my example you'd see that I in no way called root a programming language. My entire point is that there are better ways to tell someone not to root. If your point to the OP is this: No, you shouldn't root because it can be dangerous, can brick your device, and that you really need to do your homework on it before you just go and do it, then tell them that! Don't condescend to them and/or future readers of the thread that not knowing it is reason enough not to do it ever. It's insulting. At least it is to me. It IS a discouragement, and in IMO, and in the spirit of XDA, we should try to point people in the right direction so they can learn and make them aware of the risks and benefits so they can make informed decisions. Sure, if it's already been covered, post a link to the thread or sticky. No need to rewrite it. But sending the message of "If you don't already know, abandon all hope now" is crap.
If you disagree with me, then I'll agree to disagree with you.
That's the last I'll say about this.
Peace

I interpreted it to mean that learning more about root and what it might offer/require of a user is probably best before actually rooting and then deciding later on if that's what you really wanted to do. That is, being conservative here is probably not the worst suggestion.

So why don't you do it? What kind of Dr. makes sad pouty faces because others are not lining up to do hundreds of hours of work on a mediocre tablet in exchange for absolutely nothing? Overbooked proctologist? I imagine you weren't planning to pay anyone anything to do work that you're requesting, but maybe I'm wrong about that? A ot of people will work on a given device because there's something they want out of it, or it would be especially useful, or.... someone found a vulnerability. Personal passion, wide popularity, the crowds of adoring women ... so many reasons, different for everyone working on every device.
What incentive do they have to assist you in this? Maybe it is your drive and insistence that this device open for every user to have full control of their personal information, which you display by all of the work you have done towards creating the root method here yourself? It's been a month since your post., please let me know what you have learned in your work so far

This is especially entertaining after trying to talk down to me... which wasn't very effective after repeatedly begging and pouting that no one will root a random device. to make your life easier. You don't have real books, or a memory card or hard drive to back those up, and you seem to honestly see begging random people to spend their lives doing things for you a more reasonable choice than buying one of those or a more popular tablet or any with an existing path to root. It's pathetic. I'm not even trying to insult you, it's honestly very sad. It's like pride, dignity, and shame have all vanished in favor of entitlement and expectation.

L0L, Kid dont you have any bussiness to do? If you do, please concentrate there.
MOD Edit:
LANGUAGE.
@Dr.Anshuman michael.johns03 is spot on. Your attitude is one of pure infantile and ignorant entitlement. I'm guessing you assume some people are just born with some kind of 'technical' gene? Which gives them the ability to do technical work effortlessly? And you unfortunately don't have that gene? It's just a 'snap of the fingers' for some people to do as you request?
News Flash Dr... no, you're wrong. Pull your head out of all of those vagina's, take a look around you, it's a different world than you think it is.

Man, you seriously need to see the posts again. I just posted couple of request , i did not abuse or wrong said any developer. And its was just 2-3 post in whole damn month. I dont understand what made you kids go off thread topic rather than helping and finding the way. God help you people.
Now stop here and Let me know if you find any way to root SM-595. If People are here to show attitude rather than developing , then better i should discontinue this thread.
Enough arguments.
Next time, please watch your language @Dr.Anshuman and be courteous towards other members, even if you disagree with them about something.

Okay, newbee here... Help? Advice?

First of all hello from Germany. It is a sunny evening, and we're expecting 40 deg Celsius within the next days...
Well, on to the topic. I am an experienced software developer, I am a pretty much experienced Linux/Unix administrator, but I never bought a over-the-egde mobile phone bevore I've fallen in... well, not exactly love, but excitement with the MI 9. I know to patch kernel code, I know how to tune even Windows Server farms etc etc. But I am absolutely new to mobile pimping. So, stuff like alternative boot loaders, GCam, this, that, whatnot are completely new to me.
So....... what would be a good starter to learn about all this stuff? As we are walking on Linux grounds, I am pretty much aware of the fact that there will be no such stop-once-know-all thing like the Microsoft Developer Network where not only one question leads to the next, but also the answers are built on top of each other. But at least...? Some good starter that leads back to this forum later on when my knowledge may eventually will have become appropriate to understand all your geek speak? :good:
To be more precise, what I am looking for is like a simple newbie tuturial like:
In order to unleash the full power of your phone, you have to
1st Get yourself acquainted with these concepts and that terms. Read on here, there, and there.
2nd Do this as a starter. You'll need that. Read here.
3rd If you want to do this, first you have to do that and that. The pros are here and the cons are there. Read here about the quirks.
4th You can do a lot of more fancy things. Before you do so, look here and there. Also keep in mind that this and that are important.
5th If you really want to go further, read the following xda-developers threads: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, then H, I, J...
Thank you very much indeed everyone who wants to share their ideas, hints, and knowledge!

Why sould I? That is my very question. All of you are like go unlocking, rooting, stuff. Perhaps you did not get the point. WHY? I am almost convinced to do so, but what would be THE reason? No Google spyware would be one reason, no crapware, adware would be another, more speed, no more footprints sent to some of US' greedy intelligence.

Sounds like you've answered your own question with valid reasons. But, you have to unlock bootloader in order to root/flash custom roms etc. It is required as a first step
And you can always relock bootloader
