As a newbie, I shocked myself that the rom upgrade went so smoothly! Push email is working great with 4smartphone, and the 8125 flies!
I installed a few of the original .cabs (smartdial, mms, edge icon) but I cannot get mms to work.
I had no MMS account option until I installed the MMS cab, but since then the account is there and I receive MMS messages no problem...except for 1 thing:
When the messages arrive, they download what appears to be the attachment, but the icon shows as a vertical black box attached to the message, and I cannot open the picture at all. I can redownload no problem...but the picture won't appear.
Also..the phone keeps trying to redownload the picture every couple of minutes.
Any ideas? Is there another cab I need to install?
thanks.
I am 99% sure I have the settings correct, as they were taken from c
problem is you installed Cingular's cabs on a new rom. Which rom are you using anyway? can't post too much information, but as you have, you can always post too little.
I am using the newer Qtek rom on my 8125 and mms works great. it also worked great on the Imate 2.16.9.1 ROM. But I just installed the default titled roms from the Imate and allowed the customization to happen for the Qtek. Then manually configured MMS Server as the MMS account was there after running the new cabs.
I am using the new ROM but I do not use MMS, howver I will note that QTEK's EXT rom has MMS cabs, I would advise doing a hard reset and letting the QTEK EXT Rom run. I couldn't find ANYTHING in the EXT that would be unwanted (*except MMS for me since I dont use it, but I still let it install, meh.) I don't know if I can send MMS with my current plan, I have unlimited internet but no sms plan or mms plan as far as I know... can I send and receive MMS? If so I will test it for you.
Later; Lew
you would get charged for sending them, I think 15 or 25 cents per message... but no need... I am using the Qtek ROM 2.17.7.2 allowed it to run the customization (ie all EXTRom cabs installed) and after I setup the MMS server it worked fine. Send and Receive.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=244432#244432 -- instructions I created to setup GPRS/EDGE and MMS
Some people want to be notified that they are on EDGE and if you don't want to make a simple reg edit (change a 0 to a 1) then you can use the Cingular EXT Rom that sets the EDGE icon.
LOL, I thought the cab file had the ICON inside... care to share the registry value it changes? I liek making my own changes. =)
Thanx; Lew
Haaa.. Haa... nope... just this.
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon
[Dword] 1
well...it seems I got it working.
I downloaded the newest imate released aku2 rom and reflashed the phone with it (after unlocking, etc.) As per everyones instructions, I hit the soft reset when it asked for the carrier so I didn't get any of the customization.
I then installed a few of the cingular cabs (mms, edge icon, smart dialer) and everything worked perfectly...except mms.
I found a thread at howard where someone had the same problem, and I found that I also needed to install 2 other cingular cabs. sms. and something with EON in it. After I did that, MMS worked perfectly.
so...as of now...the phone is flying (even with the few cingular cabs I installed.) no lockups, push email is working great.
keeping my fingers crossed. If I start having some problems, I will take your advice and hard reset. Until then...it is working very very well....mainly because of all the help and tips I got on this forum!
T
I agree, I'm glad this forum is here.
In fact, speaking of help and tips on this forum.....
dude!!!! I can't believe you didn't post some type of link to those files or atleast threads!!!!! To help others towards a solution!!!!
Somebody sent me a text message and I can't access the download....
Ah well, back to the search function.
I hate you!
Just kidding
I'm referring to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45295
(Cingular 8125 users: 2 custom RUU upgraders available on ftp)
What's the benefit of using that over the stock cingular rom? It still has goodlink and expressmail installed so it's not really saving any space. Does it just offer a better OS with less errors and more speed?
Also, referring to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=47052
(Cingular 8125 users: 217 ROM w/ fonts, themes, oclock on ftp)
I can see some improvements. Themes, ringtones, and omapclock have been installed while goodlink and expressmail have been removed. I don't need the themes, ringtones, or omapclock.exe... but since this version doesn't have goodlink or expressmail this would be better for me then the first ROM I listed correct?
I can't test myself yet because my 8125 doesn't get here for another 12 hours or so. But I'm trying to prepare so when I get it I know exactly what to install to get it up and running ASAP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
In the first case, there were two ROMs listed for download - one is the stock Cingular 1.8 ROM and one was upgraded to the MSFP/AKU2 ROM with the Cingular customizations. When this was first posted, neither HTC America, nor Cingular, made the original ROM version available for download - so if you upgraded to one of the other ROM's, it was virtually impossible to go back to the stock Cingular ROM.
In the other case, a lot of the ringers and themes are now stored in ROM, in lieu of taking up memory. It is a personal preference.
I upgraded to the AKU2 update ROM from the first thread so I could get Push Mail. Plus it is significantly faster than the original Cingular ROM.
Is there a post about all the versions of ROM?
Excuse my lack of knowledge, but I'm just a baby beginner when it comes to Wizards... just switched from HP 6515. I don't even know what AKU2 means, nor which update would be best for my needs.
I'd like to learn about it. But don't want people to write what has already been written, so could you provide me some links to the "history" of ROMs?
Thanks...

Browse this forum and you'll learn plenty. AKU2 is essentially like a service pack. It inludes OS fixes, and in the case of AKU2, it adds support for Microsoft's Direct Push, which requires an Exchange (service pack 2) account to function.
There's really only three major ROM types for the Wizard: the shipping version which came on your device, modified 2.0X ROMs which include Direct Push and support for bluetooth stereo, and 2.X ROMs which include Direct Push but NOT bluetooth stereo. The various 2.X ROMs you see are just various AKU2 releases from different vendors like QTek or Imate, as well as custom variations of those ROMs.
You're most likely to run across custom ROMs US carriers T-Mobile and Cingular, because they have yet to release official AKU2 ROMs.
What are your needs and who's your carrier?
Thank you for your explanation. This is actually where my journey to the world of Wizards begin
My provider is Cingular...
My needs? Hmm... tough one ;-)
Up till now I've been using HP 6515. Mostly for listening to music (not via BT) and ocasionally playing Microsoft's Cubicle Chaos. (Sometimes both at the same time)
I use some Today Screen plugins...
I'm a pretty heavy phone user (1-2 hours talk time per day) and messaging person (about 800 per month). I don't use GPRS, since Cingular's prices on it simply SUCK!
And I'm always looking for some new uses for my phone...

OK then, I think the custom 2.17 Cingular ROM is appropriate for you. It has push mail, but since you won't be using that, you'll at least gain the benefits of improved stability and performance.
Check out the thread I started about 2 custom ROMs for CIngular users being available on the ftp. There's a link directly to the 2.17 installer.
Be aware that you will lose anything you've installed, so you'll have to reinstall everything to your liking as you did when the device was new.
Thanks a lot, Summiter.
You've given me a lot of explanation and I'm grateful to you.
I'll sure check out that thread.
Cheers.
Hi there summiter.
I want to download/install the ROM you are mentioning, but the FTP link in your post is broken...may you offer some help as to where I can find it?
I have a Cingular 8125 that I'd like to update with the 2.17 ROM you mention.
Nevermind, I found a working link in another post.
Going to try the 2.17 with AKU2, Ringers, and oclock. I'll see how it goes!
How to -exactly
I too am new in the HTC world having come from years of Blackberrries. The info on the ROM upgrades is clear and it seems an upgrade to the 2.17 would be good for me, but I need to know *how* to flash and upgrade and haven't found any step-by-step's in this forum for those basic items. I have no problem finding the files, downlaoding the files from the FTP sites, etc- I just need to know what the difference between "flash" and "update" are - and how to execute those two tasks.
Thanks,
-Marc

Flash and update are used interchangeably. When you update, you are flashing a new ROM onto your device.
As far as step-by-step goes, I've posted several, but..
establish an activesync connection
CID unlock with aWizard
device reset
establish an activesync connection
run the ROM isntaller of choice

Does anyone have any screen shots of what the upgraded cingular rom looks like?
Does it have the looks and feel of the original rom?
Thanks

Unless you decide to use one of the added themes, then yep it looks exactly the same. As far as feel, well that's relative, but most folks report it feels a bit snappier. It retains the Cingular splash screen at startup.
Ahoy mateys,
There's a new custom ROM up on the ftp. It is based on AKU 2.3, originating from a T-MO beta ROM. The core OS however is not beta and is the final AKU 2.3 release.
This ROM feels much better to me than 2.25 did. It will take a few days to really know if it's more stable, but after about 12 hours with it, it feels right. Please only install this ROM if you can deal with potential oddness.
A few interesting notes, and some stats:
-A2DP was already integrated into the OS (no more add-on needed), and works mighty nice with my HT820s, although it sucks CPU
-Auto timezone is active - disable it if your towers insist you're somewhere you aren't
-Boot time is pretty fast, about as fast as 2.25
****THIS NEXT STATEMENT SHOULD BE READ AND UNDERSTOOD****
-The reported ROM build is 2.24. However the core OS build is newer than that of the leaked Cingular ROM version 2.25. This is because the source carrier (T-MO) happens to be at a different place in their numbering. Again, the OS build is newer than the one in Cingular ROM 2.25.xx.
***********************************************************
-The radio ROM is 2.25.11, the same as was in Cingular's 2.25.
-Vibrate while sleeping still works
-Manual phone network selection is re-enabled
-The GPRS/EDGE indicator is now a little different: In the title bar, the usual "E" or "G" indicator will tell you which of the two is available. Added was a very small "E" or "G" over the signal strength bars to indicate an active data connection. This is either new, or my short attention span never noticed it.
-OS reports as: OS 5.1.195 (Build 14955.2.3.0)
-Contains Cingular customizations for accounts, etc
-Added: themes, ringers, OmapClock w/ shortcuts, improved Task Manager, contact multi-select, wireless today screen item
-Makes toast, but not waffles (yet)
Alrighty then, here you go:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Up...U_Wizard_AKU2.3_Custom_RNG_THM_A2DP_TEST2.exe
For the adventurous, let me know how it works for you, and whether the toast is any good. I don't run much in the way of third party apps, so can't comment on issues with them.
EDIT 06/06/06:
I replaced the T-MO sourced 2.25 radio with the Cingular sourced 2.25 radio since some folks say they get better performance. Link to renamed file udpated.
Also includes a softkey control panel app to change softkey mappings.
One more quick note - please don't PM me regarding this or other ROMs. Aks in the forums for the benefit of all. Questions that aren't answered elsewhere in the forum WILL be answered by any number of the great folks arouns here.
[email protected]!
Thanks a lot, i will try it this afternoon.
applying now .... thanks for the great work
can you make a rom with all your customization (themes, rings, etc) but WITHOUT any Cingular stuff? I'd like to use the ROM on a different network.
Thanks
PS: is it possible to find, somewhere on this or other forum, a complete guide on how to cook a wizard rom?
I've searched extensively this forum and now i think (or i hope) i have all the knowledge and the tools i need to start however i'm scared i can destroy my phone with a bad rom.
Thanks, bye
you rock !

So far sumitter this ROM seems to rock hard and fast! BT hasn't shut down and it does boot quicker. I'm gonna start playing with this newer Clearview and see if I can get by without that Adobe Reader... stratnge that they never updated it, huh??? ... kinda like MS Voice 1.5 ...WTF?
Thanks bro!!

Greetings!
Just upgraded from your 2.17 ROM and this one seems to be a lot faster especially on bootup.
Thank you very much!
Nice work summiter Only been on the wizard scene for 2 weeks and Ive already noticed who the "daddy" is I do have one request though, could you maybe list what files are in the extended rom and there function so to avoid installing Cingular setting ect
Summiter, just noticed that inserting or removing the memory card will wake up the 8125. Nice!
Now, if only the keyboard backlight could be made to stay on for 30 seconds instead of 5...

thanks for the update, will install this later...
Great, I was just about to install the AKU 2.2 version, but I'll jump on this instead!
Just installed.
Hit a couple of oddities for the first time (previously installed 2.17 and 2.25 summiter roms) that I'd heard reported before: 1) one install (rhinostats) hung (clock just went round and round for several minutes after install) at the end requiring a soft reset. The install was successful though. 2) after successfully setting up our corportate pushmail, some time later when I checked back, the mail folder was missing in messaging. Attempting to deinstall/reinstall error'd with an account setup problem. I deinstalled, then soft reset, then re-installed and it was able to resetup the account.
The rom is a little different than past Cingular ones in that the cingular GPRS settings are under My ISP. I didn't see how to change proxy on My ISP; however, it seems proxy is not set which is what I want.
Also, the O2 today theme was missing. I actually was using that ;-)!
Thanks for putting this all together Summiter!!!
Finally took the leap and updated to this ROM from my Cingular stock ROM (OS 1.8.11.1).
A quick question for Summiter: what are the registry changes you made, if any?
Thanks for the ROM!
So far so good! Pocket Plus has been working great. I love it!

Thanks a lot! Installed it a few minutes ago, so I am not able to rate it's stability, but so far so good. One thing I noticed is that in the settings--> connections menu an option is added: USB to PC. It states " Changing the type of USB connection your device uses can help with problems connecting Activesync. "
Enable advanced network functionality (checkbox)
Might be usefull for those having troubles with USB connections.
I had the AKU 3.3 rom on my device and used that one as the base to upgrade to the WM6 rom fully however in doing that I lost a lot of the useful apps cooked into the rom.
I'm looking for some if not all the apps that are available on the AKU 3.3 rom for my G4
the quick dials on the today screen is a must really need that but I can't find out what application that is etc.
i've searched around all over but I've not been able to find a few of the apps that are on the AKU rom so I can get them on my WM6 rom now. Anyone got any links they can post up for the following.
Mobile Secretary
New Menu For WM5
Contacts Backup
New SIM Manager
Ringtone manager
Contacts Manager
SMS Backup
Screen Rotate
I can confirm today agenda BORKS WM6 really screws it up.
Ok i've had a few PMs with regards to how I got WM6 working on the G4. Rather than sending them same PM over and over heres what i did.
I paid the £20 to get the software to super CID unlock my G4.
http://www.imei-check.co.uk/ its quick you'll get it in a matter of minutes and it takes about 5 mins to do it , but its a bit steap non the less.
I then upgraded to the most excellent AKU 3.3 ROM
the link below takes you to the version that WILL install on the G4 its just all in italian but you can work it out . As long as your super cid unlocked your laughing!
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Wizard/Roms/WM5_AKU3.3_Crossbow_BETA_G4.zip
at this stage when you've run the installer you'll have the WM5 AKU 3.3 Rom running. You can stop here if you want its a great rom lots of features including alot of the crossbow features.
However if your pushing to show off your phat phone skills obtain the WM6 Crossbow rom if you can find it and install it.
It should now go on with no problems! No complaints about wrong versions etc it'll just do it. It'll take you 10 mins to install just like WM5 AKU3.3 does.
When your device reboots your WM6.0! However you'll have to find all the useful apps for your PDA again. Unlike AKU3.3 your device is vanilla so off you go to find everything thats useful.
Claunch works mint as I'm using it again in anger on my device!
AKU 3.3 = NTS Style (Clean)

They are seperate. You have to remember that if you have a G4 then you will brick you phone by doing the update seperately. You can still install the original from tmobile to get the radio and ipl/spl update if you would like, then you just have to flash this OS only update

What dialer do you use and is it smartdial enabled? I like the black big-key dialer
What performance tweaks are in (the Wizard isnt that fast as we know)

They are seperate. You have to remember that if you have a G4 then you will brick you phone by doing the update seperately. You can still install the original from tmobile to get the radio and ipl/spl update if you would like, then you just have to flash this OS only update

Thank you very much.
I have a G3 T-Mobile MDA. I plan to flash the original Croatia 3.3 Rom, and flash you OS rom. I have one more question please. What is the 'Blank Ext Rom' for? Do I need to flash it too? If I do, What is the flash order?
Thanks again.
NTS,
1) Does this ROM activate the Cingular Extended ROM as well?
2) Also, can you upload a version that has no customizations (i.e. original sounds, no Crossbow.tsk et.al.)?
3) Did you replace the godawful T-mobile pink and gray Smartdialing skin?
4) Are all of the DRM files recompiled and working?

Gr8 you seem to have accomplished what i am still trying.
Good job so far.
Some questions:
Did you succeed in getting the Operator name (from the active network) in the upper left corner?

Yes, but AT&T network seems to read my sim which shows Cingular
MSN Messenger stuff was left along
No crossbow icons, skins or welcome
I used the default dialer, it was always there, just reg keys that needed to be deleted. As for smartdial, it is enabled.
I didnt really put any performance tweaks in, I just tried to slim the rom down a little and make it not so bloated.

1. No it does not activate the Cingular Extended Rom.
2. Awe cmon let me enjoy this release for a bit, working on 2 is nuts. if you want just dump both roms and grab the files you want removed and delete them, then put the original ones back in from the original release
3. Yes, that was the first thing to go. Pretty easy actually, just delete a few reg keys and all the pic files, also one dll file. It appears that the phcan*.dll's hold the phone dialer graphics.
4. Everything seemed to work fine when i installed it. Not sure what DRM is, so no idea if it tested it or if it was successful.
As a side note, I was able to get the Palm Threaded SMS application to work on this release. Still dont work on the Official Cingular, so i think im gonna stick with this one. LOL.
Cannot download from sendspace, the site always says all slots for your country ........etc etc could not download Jaguar3.1 for the same reason, any other download link possible?
