Hi there,
It looks like newer Transcend cards are not immune to the TomTom lock up issue.
I have an O2 branded XDA2i with PUGS rom etc. It runs TomTom5.21 fine with the first Transcend 1GB card I bought.
When I'm in the car, I have the phone connected to my car kit via bluetooth. When I make a call, TomTom continues to run, but shows the mute symbol. When I hang up the call, TomTom carries on as normal.
I decided to buy another Trancend card as a backup. This time, though whenever I make a call - TomTom locks up. As in other peoples posts, sometimes this can be cured by pulling the card and re-inserting, other times a soft reset is required.
I thought I'd got a faulty card, so bought another with the intention of returning the faulty one.
The new card shows the same problem.
All three cards were bought within two months of each other.
Anybody else seeing issues with new Transcend cards anfd TomTom?
Cheers,
Chris.
Could you have a look to how are your cards format?
32kb in fat32?
May be they are different...
It's interesting!
Hi there,
I used PocketMechanic to reformat the card to the same spec as the working card. Also tried many other combinations.
Dosn't make any difference on either of the two non working cards.
Perhaps my XDA is extra sensitive to power or speed of the card - but the two newer cards are definetly different.
Be warned all of you that think Transcend is the Holy Grail for SD cards.
Chris.
I have lockups using transcend 2gb 150x...tried several different format tools - it didn't help...
i don't know what to do with it...=(
I can't even listen to music because of pauses... I even tried a player which cashes songs into ram.... but what is strange - it didn't help...
but I think thats because of player didn't cash anything but said that did...
because I don't understand how can it stop playing for 1-2 seconds each minute with cash for 5mb or 5 minutes of music... =|
There is another post related to the same subject:

I am experiencing the same problem.
I've bought the 1GB x80 TRANSCEND SD card a little less than a month ago because it was supposed to cure all QTEK2020i problems.
But in fact it hasn't changed ANYthing compared to the LEXAR x32 1GB I was using before.
So, I decided to upgrade my QTEK rom with PUGS rom while taking the risk of voiding the QTEK warranty.
Unfortunatly, it hasn't solved my problems either. It seemed more stable initialy, and has cured GPRS usage problems and brought slighlty better GSM quality, but that's all with my settings.
Someone has reported this week, that moving from SD to MMC has cured his TT5 problems.
I keep my fingers crossed hoping that this one will be the right fix.
For people who bought their PDA through EXPANSYS, I encourage you to join this support poll:

And for those who bought the QTEK version of this PDA, I encourage you to complain about the lack of any suppoet on that product.

I am sorry Ice_mephi but I don't see any solution there, or I've mistunderstood your comments.
I understand that your SD card might have had errors and they got fixed with the StorageTools application, but I don't see any link between this problem and the TT5.21 freezes. Thanks anyway for mentionning this application.
Listening to music out of any SD card has never been a problem for me, and hans't ben reported as being one from polls I've read so far.
Have I mistunderstood anything ?
I've been using the Transcend 80x 1Gb card with Tom Tom 5.21 on my XDAIIi with absolutely no problems at all for at least a month now (including traffic updates via GPRS). I used tha card as supplied, without reformatting etc.

Hello Andy, also including POIS? Or only with the default installation.
Yes - I have POIs installed. It is set to remind me when I am near petrol stations and wi-fi hotspots (which I have set up myself).
I couldn't believe that the type of SD card would solve this, but it did, and I have never had a problem since!

SD? Another users say that the MMC is working better. :?
I have trascend SD 1Gb 80x, without pois it works perfect, but with them I have freezes... :?
From my experience, changing from a LEXAR x32 1GB to a TRANSCEND x80 1GB didn't solve the problem. Other persons mentionned that they got to the same conclusion with latest TRANSCEND SD cards.
Changing the SD formatting seems to have fixed most of TT5 issues with my TRANSCEND card but I haven't got on trip for hours to confirm it.
People who moved from SD to MMC seem to have got rid of any TT5 freezes.
EricD
MMC is the way ahead
I've tried all the stuff mentioned here, including getting a transcend sd card, and although it behaved for about an hour, it started freezing and locking regular after that. I now use a 1Gb TwinMOS MMC+ card, and after 400miles yesterday have not had a single problem. Take what you want from this, but my TT5.21 seems to prefer MMC.
MMC.... is the answer
Replaced my Transcend 1Gb & SanDisk Extreme III SD's for MMC and had no more lockups since

I have an XDA IIi,
Since (I Think) messing around with the Terminal Services Client, I now cannot get Phone Signal, says No Service, it also reboots itself randomly.
I did a Hard Reset, Phone came back alive again.
Restored Sprite backup, problem came back.
Any idea's what I have done to cause this problem.
Many Thanks
Nick
Dont suppose you have an SD card inserted all the time do you ?
Seems slow speed / higher voltage SD cards cause big problems with the radio in the XDA IIi
The tomtom thread in this section has some info about this too, a transcend 80x card has solved problems for most.
If you dont have an SD card inserted then, disregard all i said above lol.
Yes I did have an SD card inserted.
To get my phone back I had to do a hard reset then restored using activesync.
Thinking back this problem may have occured since formatting the sd card with non standard parameters.
I will format using windows xp format and see how it go's.
As it happens I ordered a Transcend 80x last Friday. as advised by pocketgps.com poster andy-c1. see :-

not that this is much of a help, more of a tip: personally I think Sprite BAckup sucks.
I stopped using it after trying it 2 times or so, as it just doesnt seem to work like it should
SPB Clone is way better, but a bit more expensive too :S

Is the 1Gb version gonna be as good as the 512??
I have no idea mate sorry, i suffer like the majority as i have a cheap 1gig card that causes lockups etc ... i am seriously thinking of getting a Transcend card due to the reports everyone has gave so far and i would only really go for the 1gig size too.
Has anyone tested a 1 Gig Transcend yet?
If its the same voltage as the 512 then it should be ok but would be nice to hear some hard evidence.

hi, my first post here  . hope your problem is solved..
it seems that many ppl suffered the same problem here-- after did something to the phone, like deleted registry file which described in other post, and for me screen freeze easily after i installed some popular programme, then i soft reboot it and this problem appeared. no phone singnal, self-reboots every 5-10 minute, and as soon as hard reset it, it works fine. that is exactly what happen to my phone. now i have to put 101% attantion not to install the programme which is not necessary, cos you never know when it will strike! :? anyone know why, pls help out, many thanks
Yeah I too have been bitten by this bug. I am not sold that it is the SD card. I had very good luck with a Kingston 1GB standard SD card. I definitely seemed to install something that corrupted the system. I now am stuck in the loop where it gives me the No Service statement and then will spontaneously reboot. I am running:
XDAIIi - PH10C
ROM : 1.11.00 WWE
Radio : 1.04.00
Protocol : 1337.42
ExtROM : 1.11.169 WWE
Everything is current. Ran with my current setup for a good couple weeks then BAM! it started this. I am thinking that the registry got corrupted and that is what is causing this. The other reason I am not sold on the SD theory is that it is doing this if an SD card is installed or not. Periodically it works, and will pick up a signal. I am going to nuke it tonight, reinstall my stuff and resync with my computer and then will make a Sprite Backup onto my spare SD card.
I will repost to let everyone know how it goes.

I've got the 1Gb Transcend SD card 80x and don't have any problems with it - It's the only card that I've found that hasn't locked up when using tomtom 5. Although, I've not tried my other SD cards with tomtom 5.21 only 5.1 or 5.0 which caused lock ups. I may have to give them a go. Even my Kingston Ultimate 133x caused lockups with earlier versions altough it was fine with tomtom 3.
Hi,
A simple question but I couldn't find it categorically written down anywhere: What is the largest SD card that can be used in an XDAIIi?
Thanks a lot,
James.
Im not sure i know of any limit, but its worth noting that only a Transcend 80x SD card works properly and as far as i know they go up to 1gig.
Any other card (non 80x) causes problems with the XDA IIi and causes it to hang.
Thanks for the info. I've been using San Disk 256Mb cards for a while which seem to work fine (although one did get confused once and thought it contained stuff when it didn't so had to be reflashed).
I'll stick to Transcend when buying a new bigger one.
Thanks,
James.

That is not universally true. I have been using a SanDisk 1.0 GB Ultra II SD card in my XDA IIi for a number of months with no problems whatsoever.
Yeah, in fact i'd go sa far as to say it's not true, I'm using an Integral 60x 1Gb card and have not had any problems whatsoever.
The only problem I have found is that with 1gb cards the XDA2i seems to have a problem when accessing the card and accepting incoming communication at the same time e.g, reading the memory card whilst accepting a call or accessing GPRS. The phone seems to cut power/access to the memory card (disconnects it)and therefore makes the phone hang/freeze. This does not seem to be an issue with 512mb or lower sized cards only 1gb and above. I have tried many different brands and this seems to hold true. For SATNAV applications people advise 512mb cards or lower work best. Again this I have found to be with card accessing issues and 1gb+ cards seem to lose connection, admittedly some cut off slightly faster than others. I use a gb card for most of my apps, but if running TomTom I swap in a 256mb.
ok perhaps i shouldnt have said ONLY transcend cards but i was just trying to highlight that i know that they work fine in the XDAIIi.
Yes there are going to be more brands that work fine too, as far as i know its a voltage issue, anyway im not a htc technician so thats as far as my knowledge goes
I'm using a SanDisk Ultra II 2.0GB card with no problem at all in my Qtek 2020i with O2 rom
I have been doing some reserch into SD Cards because of this problem.
It seems to do with the layers in the card. If the card is of good quality and is a single layer they seem to work OK, if it is dual layer you could have problems.
It has everything to do with current to the card and little to do with card speed.
Single layer cards of high storage capacity are more expensive to produce, because of this even the big brands use dual layer cards.
Interesting stuff about the layers. Thanks for the info.
Has anyone tried the San Disk Ultra II Plus which is the one that can be folded so it can be plugged directly into a USB port too? They look really useful (although are hard to find at the moment at a decent price) as it means you have both USB flash memory and SD combined which I'd find useful when travelling.
Re: Single layer cards
Does anyone know the brands other than Trancsend who use the Single layer card build?
Thx
i'm using a 2GO Maxell SDcard X150 and it works fine.
no pb at all
http://www.maxell.fr/Maxedhd/Sd%20Card/SDcard%202%20go%20(300%20dpi).jpg
I have 150x A-Data 2Gb. All is ok too...
I have a no-name 2 Gig crd and no issues (£84 from Novatech). Actually, 1 issue, bloody XDA locks up when removed from cradle more often than not & needs a soft reset. Other than that, zero probs...
Hi,
Could everyone post their experiences of using different SD cards, please include any problems experienced and anythingelse that might be useful for a buyer, e.g. what you use the card for, as certain cards work fine but cause problems with some applications e.g. Tom Tom 5 and the fone dialer. Also please include the make, model, price, the where you bought the card and what you use the card for.
The reason for this topic is that, I read in the forums people have had problems with different cards and applications. All this information is spread across the forum. It would be really handy for a buyer (like me) to have a thread like this...
Many Thanks!
At the moment I use an "ADTEC" 256mb card, it works fine with TT3 and does not seem to crash my xda2i, But it is a couple of years old and i am about to get a 512mb card, So it will be interesting for me to see how this thread develops.
Transcend 80x 512MB.
Works perfectly with everything including TomTom.
yeah transend 80x ,but i do think any 80x will work ,but 1 person found the transend 80x worked so i think we all bought them as we were just glad we finally found a working sd card ,well i know i was
but it would be interesting to see what other can be used succesfully
I recently bought an Ebuyer own brand 1GB SD card for £32
When it arrived it was actually a Kingston branded card!
I'm not the only person this has happened to...check out the reviews on Ebuyer.
Anyway, I've only had it for about a week but I've had no problems with it so far.
Not really used it exstensively but I've currently got about 300MB worth of music on it.
Good price, Good product I think.
Cheers
Wayne
I have a Corsair 1GB 40x card. I haven't used it much, and I know virtually nothing about these things... But it works. ~£40 from dabs.com.
i dont have money to buy a new SD Card, so I take my brother camera SD Card. mine one just 256mb and the brand is NCP.
work fine for me.....lagging for 2 seconds when incoming call...after that its ok.....but i dont recommended to others!
Have A-Data 150x SD 2Gb card. Works fine. No delays or such, even on moves, even on incoming calls.
Transcend 80x 1GB........... No problem whatsoever... even when running TomTom Navigator 5
Take back what I previously said. I can't access the card on my PDA now - it simply doesn't show up
Not sure if it's the PDA or the card because I've only just realised and I don't have a card reader at work...will have to try when I get home and update then.
Cheers
Wayne
I'm sending the card back under warranty.
Also, it wasn't a Kingston...it was Viking branded card (not sure where I got the Kingston from )
Cheers

what about pretec 133x 1gb? anyone tried it b4? Do we just judge the speed? if it is above 80x it would work fine?
thanks everyone for youre input. ive ordered a ridata 1GB SD card. its a 66x speed card. i read somewhere cant remember where now that tomtom needs a 10mbs card which is 66x speed which my main reason for buying the card will let you know how it goes when i receive the card.
Negative experience
Hi,
I bought a 1GB 66x BRAVO SD Card at Ebay.
Since then, my Alpine crashes over and over again.
I Soft reset it 5-10 times a day!
I guess it's the SD Card's fault as the device never crashes without the card.
Hi!
I have my XDA IIi for about 2 weeks now. So far I didn't have any problems with my SD-Cards.
I have a 256MB SD Card extrememory (no fancy speed...) that works quite well. I used it several days without problems and now have placed my rom backup on it.
The other SD Card I now use mainly for my XDA IIi is a 2GB Card from Transcent (150x). Until now I didn't had any strange problems with it (used it for about one and a half week).
I've finally found an SD card that works with Tomtom5 without crashing - it the Transcend 80x SD Card.
I've tried loads of others some better than others, but all crashed within minutes of starting TT5 except the Transcend.
Some other SD Cards were fine running Tomtom 3, but would not run Tomtom5 as all.
I've had the following cards that cause TT5 to crash:-
Kingston Ultimate 133x 512Mb
Kingston Elite 80x 512Mb
Scandisk 512Mb
The only other card that I've had that didn't cause TT5 to crash was :-
Compaq 128Mb (speed unknown as it came with an iPaq) but not big enough.

RE: SD Card with Alpine
Hi All,
I use a Zynet 1Gb 68x and my TomTom only has a problem with incoming calls. freezing to solve it, I turn my BT GPS on and off and this fixes it.
My friend is using a Qtek 2020i with Tomtom and a Transcend 1Gb 80x,
he has the same problem as me.
I don't know if the new 1.04 Radio version would help or not, when I get the energy I will upgrade my XDA IIi to this and test.
My opinion is that the Alpine has an internal power problem, as it only occurs with Bluetooth on, causing a power drain when a call is received thus your SD card briefly loses power. Its only a theory, the weight is towards some sort of design fault with the Alpine, otherwise one of the Carries etc would have sourced an answer by now, as the Alpine has been out long enough now. We cannot blame SD cards which work perfectly well with the majority of other electrical devices on the market.
hello..i got a 1 gb sandisk sd card which works fine in my qtek 2020i and i also use tom tom 5 with this and a 1gb pny sd card as well.
i never new there was all these problems with sd cards , saying that i always bought sandisk and they have not let me down before with this ppc phone or my past ppc phone like the spv m1000.
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I cannot find any solutions to this on any of the forums.
TT5 running ok but 9 times out of 10 it will 'lock-up' during the journey. If I take out the SD card and reinsert it, sometimes it continues to work but after about 4 or 5 goes it locks up completely and needs a hard reset.
Someone suggested that there was still a problem with moving between cells where this would loose connection to the SD card.
Any suggestions on how to fix other than buy a new phone?
TT lockups ...
First thing that comes to mind is
make sure you are using a High speed SD card!
I now use the highly recommended Transcend 80X card and my unit is now performing brilliantly!
I'm running TT 5.1 - not sure of the functionality to upgrade it to 5.21...

The Extreme III is quoted at 20MB per second data transfer speeds

use definitly a transcend 80x and your problems are away.
i used a transcend 45x before and had the same issues as you.
it´s not the speed, which is the problum but the need of power of the sd
the tc 80x has a single layer design and so saves power!

p.s.: i use a xda 2i ger + tc 80x 1gb + ttn 5.21
Extreme III not working !?!?!?
Hi all,
Great site - been reading for a while, just signed up.
I've had my Alpine for a few months but haven't done anything with it yet as I'm waiting until I have the money for an SD card.
I was thinking of getting an Extreme III myself as it appears to be one of the best out there (although I was hoping they'd release a 2 or 4gb version). It's rated at 133x and is also SLC (single layer cell)...
So I'm a bit concerned that it's not working for you - let us know if you find the cause of the problem checks!
**duplicate post**
Same problem with a SanDisk miniSD 1GB.
Solved reformatting all ( both low and high level ) using :
FAT32 and cluster size of 2K
Hope this Helps.
Maurizio
What program did you use to format the SD card?
Some good & bad news... :x
Reformated the SD card with SoftWinter's StorageTools to FAT32, 2Kb cluster size, Backup FAT:No (I guess at Low level?)
This has solved 90% of lockups and TT5 has only locked 2 or 3 times since.
I should be getting a Transcend 1Gb 80X SD at the end of the week so I will give it a go.... finger's cross!
I use pocket Mechanic tools for SD maintenance.
Before get new SD card try to install XPUScalar for overclock your PDA ( sd transfer rate increased )
tried a Transcend 1Gb 80x, exactly same problem - must be a problem with the Xda IIi, will try to send it back under warranty to be checked/fixed
Just trying to list the “possible” causes/fixes of the Xda2i lock up when using TT5.21
I to have this problem and as yet is still unresolved.
It can run for maybe 15 mins, locks up showing full set of satellites. Have to soft reset and start TT again.
Using Globalsat BT-338. Tried on “other bluetooth device”. Now set to NMEA, (as recommend elsewhere) tried 38400 baud rate, tried 4800, Left battery out for over an hour (cold start) still the same.
Storage card, a Transcend 80x
Upgraded radio 1.04.00. Ext Rom 1.11.162 (to Pugs version, Thank you DAZ999)
Reloaded To TT5.21
Reloaded Globalsat. (Question, the GPS info CD is version 5.1, and comes up with “this is made for an earlier version of software”?)
Hard reset numerous times.
Last resort, reblow ROM, reload all software and reinstall Globalsat.
Any further suggestions greatly appreciated.
Dave
My PDA uses 2 x Kingston 512Mb SDcards: one has the 'serious' stuff on it (Tomtom, Dictionaries, Visitor Guides etc) and the other games/films.
I've never experienced any problems with either TomTom or other programs, excepting the aminations in 'Riven' sometimes are a bit slow. Video plays happily full-screen using divx and MVP Player.
I recently installed Pocket Mechanic and ran the tests on the SD cards:
... they both scored a speed rating of 2.7X!
so am sure it's not a speed issue, as TT works perfectly smoothly.
my $.0.2

Me again,
I've received a new XDA IIi from O2 and guess what, the same intermittent problems with TT5 locking up.
For anyone who as a working copy of TT5 (5.21) help us with how they installed it… ie. what ROM used, if they just installed 5.21 or install 5.0 and installed update to 5.1 and update to 5.21..
TomTom support told me that there are known issues with XDA IIi and transferring data from the SD card, so why is the phone on the list of supported devices…
Hi there,
If it can be of any help, here's how I've installed TomTom :
- ROM version : 1.11.162/1.04.00 cooked by pug
- SD Card : Transcend 80x 1GB
- Install TT 5.0 with Bluetooth Support, Voice, but without maps. I don't use main memory for most of my programs, but the "Storage" directory instead (Disk On Chip)
- Install TT 5.21 upgrade. In a few cases I've had to reinstall just the Voice
- Copy the maps to the storage card.
- Use the Bluetooth Manager to pair with the GPS unit.
- Launch TT, configure "Other Bluetooth GPS", and pick COM 6.
The GPS is a Holux GPSLim236, set to 38400 baud NMEA.
I haven't had any lockups so far.
The only annoyance is that TT is very touchy about the order in which I start my BT devices : if I switch on the BT headset before launching TT, it won't find the GPS. The other way around seems to work better, but I've had to re-configure the GPS inside TT a few times to get it to figure out the GPS was really there.
Good luck !
Checks, did you solve it?
With format in fat32 2kb or installin how Mr Spoke said?
So... Yesterday I did one thing - and as the result - no lockups while listening to music today...
I have Qtek 2020i and trancsend 150x 2GB SD card.
What I did:
1) formatted my SD card using card reader.
2) than copied music to card with card reader too.
3) inserted card into ppc - tried to listen to music and got lots of lockups....
4) some days ago I found a tool for fixing errors SD card on ppc(format and defragment also): "Storage Tools 2.0". I tried to check sd card with it - and it found lots of errors on sd card.. (there were 2 kind of errors: "lost chains of files" and "2 files pointing same data").. so I runned it and it removed those errors...
5) today I listened to music almost all the day - and wow! there were no lockups!
I do belive that that lockups are caused by some harware fault while reading and writing data to SD card via ppc. but that program somehow corrects errors...don't know how..
but ! be carefull - I tried to format my card using that tool - but after that - my ppc and PC showed me that the card has no free space - I tried to reformat it via card reader and other tools - it didn't help.
but on transcend homepage I found util for correcting "free space issue" (that is that card's known issue i think..) and it saved my card...
and one more advice - when you'll check your cards for errors - set option to correct errors automaticly, or you will get thousands of messages asking fix or not each found error, and aborting checking won't help.. (I waited for 20 minutes after I pressed stop button - than just soft reseted ppc...)...
so here is that util:
http://www.softwinter.com/storagetools.html
you can use it without paying for it as I understood.
use at your own risk anyway...
That sounds like good news Ice.....
Lets see what others have to say, especially with TT5.
Well I still get the occasional TomTom lock up with my bog standard bought in Tesco's 256MB SD card, formatted to FAT32 2kb (about 1 lockup per 3 days, compared to 1 lockup per 30 mins before I switched to PUGS 1.11.162 and reformatted the card), so I just downloaded and tried this with some interesting results...
I analysed my storage card and it told me that there were errors. So I ran repair (manually clicking ok on each error) and I got a few lost file chains, but about 30 "Bad Directory Entry". When it finished, I ran the "Verify" again, and it told me there were still errors. Ran repair again, this time just 3 "Bad Directory Entry" errors.
Upshot, each time I check it with this tool it tells me there are errors, and doesn't seem to be able to fix them. Pocket Mechanic on the other hand tells me that my card is fine and that there are no errors.
Don't know which to believe.
hm...wes there any work with card between checks? if there were some write operations it could cause new errors.. if that util worked from sd card exspecially..
I have no other card to test it myself...but my seems to work fine..
while listening to music I had lockuos about every 5 minutes...it's gone..
now I am going to try installing some programs to card and more music and see what happens...
So I tried to add\remove some data from card - no errors appeared - and no lock ups still...
so now i think that formatting SD card clears only header of a card, and leaves some info on free space - which can cause such trouble when accessing new data....
Used StorageTools to reformat SD as FAT32, 2K cluster size
Downloaded TT5 maps and ran Scan with Repair option but still issues with TT 5.21 lockup!!
Tried with both 1Gb SanDisk Extreme III and 1Gb Transcend 80x
heh =|
btw, you all speak about tomtom lockup, do you have lockups when listening to music? because I never used tomtom - I just had problems with music....
I think the corrupted data on the cards is caused by momentary power losses which the card reader experiences (thanks to a fault in the Alpine hardware), if I remember past discussion on this forum correctly...
Also, is the Transcend SD card an MLC or SLC card? Because as far as I know, SLCs don't suffer from the data problems MLC cards suffer sometimes when used in Alpines.
Chris,
How can you find out if the Transcend SD is MLC or SLC ?
Would upgrading to a later ROM fix the problem?
If you search the forums for the threads discussing MLC Vs. SLC, I think you'll find out your answer.
Basically, I believe the only ways to tell if a card is SLC or MLC are to either have a program which will tell you (I don't know of one myself), or check the manufacturer's web site for technical information... Or ask someone who may know.
I don't believe upgrading the ROM will solve the problem, it's a hardware issue (the card readers are too sensitive to power fluctuations). It was previously assumed that the latest Transcend cards were immune from the problems with some other makes of SD card, but it seems from various user reports that they do indeed suffer - usually randomly - from similar problems.
Another user reported that after switching from SD cards to MMC cards, the problem was alleviated, and he went from experiencing quite a few lockups daily to absolutely no problems at all. Therefore, it may be worth your while sending back the Transcend card and buying an MMC (which you're quite entitled to do if you're a UK resident and you purchased the card recently from a UK retailer, thanks to the Distance Sale of Goods Act).

Someone has reported last week, that moving from SD to MMC has cured his TT5 problems.
For people who bought their PDA through EXPANSYS, I encourage you to join this support poll:

And for those who bought the QTEK version of this PDA, I encourage you to complain about the lack of any support on that product.

We're on the same wavelength
I had a 1Gb Sandisk, I had to buy a Transcend 80x 1Gb, and know do you think we have to buy another card (MMC)!!!??
Please QTEK!!!! Solve IT!!!!
Well, if you can't return the item for a refund, you could always flog it on eBay.

I don't think the problem of TomTom lockups is caused by momentary power losses which the card reader experiences as stated by christopherwoods.
The card readers may be too sensitive to power fluctuations, but after doing the following testing, here is below the results I had:
1 - Transcend 2 Go SD card 150X (2Go) with QTEK 2020i using TOMTOM
5.21, but I took out the SIM card of my phone (so no more GSM signal)
I did not suffer any lockups with TOMTOM during many trips
2 - Transcend 2 Go SD card 150X (2Go) with QTEK 2020i using TOMTOM
5.21, but I put back the SIM card in my phone, and here are the
lockups back again.
I noticed that when my phone is searching for GSM signal (when moving from one cell to another, or in weak signal area), then it is precisly the time where TOMTOM lockup. Maybe it is when QTEK2020i search for GSM signal then there is power fluctuations on the card reader of the phone, which result with a lockup of TOMTOM or other applications (as stated by other people).
In this case, christopherwoods would be right.
Anyway, I have moved since more then one week to a Kingston 2Go MMC Plus Card, and I said goodbye to all the lockups problems, it works perfectly, and I'm very happy with my 2020i.
I can't say for sure, I've never experienced any problems like this on my 2i (but I have a fairly old 256mb SD card which JUST fits TT5 and the GB and NL plus maps, my largest SD card I use in my digital camera). All I mentioned in my previous post were things other people either took an educated guess at, or mentioned might be the cause of the problem. It seems that a fair few peoples' bug reports and diagnoses of their problems were quite similar though, which led me to believe that this is probably the cause.
It would fit, if the device needs to draw more power than available to boost the signal strength to handshake with a cell, I'd expect all the other interfaces to suffer as a result, the memory card unfortunately being particularly susceptible (especially with these newest, HUGE memory cards which I can only imagine are really sensitive to voltage change, being so tightly packed into the chip).
I don't think temporary power losses have anything to do with the problems we are facing.
TRANSCEND SD cards as most of FLASH cards assemblers work at 3.3V +/- 10 to 20%. For example the TRANSCEND 1GB x80 SL is given to work between 2.7V and 3.6V.
Also, the problems I have been having were the same with LEXAR 1GB x32 that used to be one of the reference cards for IPAQ2215, behaves the same way the TRANSCEND 1GB x80 does.
And TT5.21 freezes happen when the 2020i is plugged to the cigaret lighter adapter as well as being used on its onw battery.
A problem has been identified with TT5 when changing cell towers, and this might be still be the case even though TT5.21 was supposed to cure it.
I can reproduce the freezes 5min from home when entering a particular area, and changing cell tower migh have something to do with it.
When changing cell-phone tower I think it induces either higher data transfers between the radio module and the processor, or the opposite way keep it in hold for a pretty long time.
When looking at SD or MMC specs, I found out that several revisions of the MMC standard specifications have been released. So, I think the 2020i hardware or firmware version we are using, only supports a certain sets of this MMC/SD standards. The same issue was known on the IPAQ221x serie regarding BlueTooth. That PDA wasn't able to communicate properly with certain BT devices that implemented BT1.2 standard because of its hardware design. Also on that PDA certain SD cards weren't supported properly when running TT2 or 3. I found out at that time that running TT app & sound files out of RAM instead of SD was the cure to problems whatever SD card was used.
Unfortunatly, running TT5 and associated files out of SD or RAM doesn't change anything on the 2020i regarding freezes.
I think the problem is a hardware/firmware issue between cell-phone tower changes and SD card support.
Hope we'll figure out what the real issue is, and have a definitive fix for it.
So far, Bigdede's tip seems to be the one, unless other people than sybaseian have fix their problem when moving to newer ROM updates.
Hmm. Well, my old SD card is a PNY 256Mb, if that helps in diagnosis. I have the occasional problem with TT locking up if I try to load too many POI or display them on the map, you have to be patient with this SD card It's just got quite a slow access rate. That has to be one of the main reasons for this problem... Maybe the CPU just can't keep up with the fastest read/write rates of these new cards when it's having to think about loads of other stuff at the same time? Resulting in momentary data loss or corruption, just like WMP will sometimes stutter or crap out.

The same for me I can reproduce this lockup it in a particular point. But only when I have additional pois activated.
(I have trascend 1Gb 80x)
Without these pois, it works perfectly.
