I have no real experience of running windows xp, but
i guess that activesync will create an IP subnet for the connection and assign the addresses for the host and device. Then you can do telnet to port 9999.

VNC server problems

Hi all,
Having a lot of problems trying to use a VNC server on my Vario 3.
I've installed PocketVNCServ 0.8.1-EN from pocketvnc.sf.net and its running listening.
Whenever I try to connect from my desktop to it (I've checked and the IP for my Kaiser is correct), and every time I get:
Code:
vncviewer PreferredEncoding=raw ZlibLevel=0 AutoSelect=1 169.254.2.1
VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Sep 10 2007 17:17:04
Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.
See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.
Wed Dec 5 10:36:43 2007
CConn: connected to host 169.254.2.1 port 5900
CConnection: Server supports RFB protocol version 3.5
CConnection: Using RFB protocol version 3.3
TXImage: Using default colormap and visual, TrueColor, depth 24.
CConn: Using pixel format depth 6 (8bpp) rgb222
CConn: Using raw encoding
main: write: Connection reset by peer (104)
I've tried quite a few different connection parameters, auto detection, etc and none seem to work. I'm guessing its not matching the capabilities of the screen/resolution or something and giving up, can anyone give me a clue where I'm going wrong please?? I desperately need to get this working, and since I'm running under Linux cannot use the activesync solutions out there.
Cheers!
Andy
Do u have real vnc enterprise on the computer? They are really compatable with eachother. But idk about linux, works fine on Vista.
THis doesn't answer your VNC issue, but have you tried mymobiler.com ? Cool app (but for Windows, so you could try running it via Wine or in a VM session on Linux).
MyMobiler installs on Windows then on your next sync will install and connect to your phone. You can then pull your phone screen right up on your PC and control it as a window in Windows. Very handy.
I'll see if I can source vnc enterprise, but wasn't aware of any protocol differences between the software packages, something you're aware of?
And, unfortunately wine/crossover won't work with Activesync at all, due to many issues, so that isn't a possibility at present.
ekw, any chance you could enable debugging on your windows vnc client and see what encodings, screen resolution, etc it uses and I'll try to shove those settings into my vnc client by hand and see if it solves the problem??

No need for that - it works just fine with the free (!!!) TightVNC client, as has also been explained in http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...y) Pocket PC from another (desktop) computer?
BTW, as far as MyMobiler (and other alternatives) are concerned, I really recommend thoroughly reading the articles at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde... from both the desktop and the mobile device) - I've VERY thoroughly compared all these solutions to each other. ALL your questions will be answered in there.
Hi,
thanks for that, I'd already studied the wiki documents several times, and none referred to Linux compatibility, so was basing it around the TCP/IP methods.
It looks like the linux vnc clients operate very slightly differently to the Ultra/TightVNC clients for windows, as I tried this on a friends laptop and got a connection and remote control immediately.
So i used Crossover/Wine and installed UltraVNC to my kubuntu desktop, and sure enough that connected up and works fine.
I'll do some debugging to find what differences there are, as I should be able to easily use native linux VNC clients (its a transfer protocol underlying, so shouldn't be a compatibility problem).
So, I'll post back with further details as I'm sure others will want to do what I've been doing under Linux, as we're not all windows clones on our desktops ;-)

Does anyone know how to use Remote Desktop?

I downloaded the cab, but i dont know where to go from there. I am just a normal person with a laptop and a tilt.
Do you have a domain set up for your laptop? Probably not so there is no way for you to use the Remote desktop app there are other apps out there but most cost money
You dont need a domain setup to use it. You can just leave that blank. You need to know your IP address, and you need to have a password setup on your machine for remote desktop to work, you can not connect if you do not have a password.
If you are behind a router, you need to forward the correct ports for it to be able to connect to your pc as well.
After its setup, you just need to connect via ip address, through a connection that is not behind a nat, if you are using att, you need to have access to the isp.cingular apn, wap.cingular does not work.
This is a pretty loaded question. Along with the information from fastblack, you'll also need to ensure your version of Windows supports Remote Desktop and that remote connections are allowed. Also depending on the environment there may be other security settings on the machine you are trying to connect to that will need to be considered.
In short, if you don't know how to do this already, it might not be the right solution for you. It can get pretty complicated in some cases.
I have vista premium. Say was to use a router for my laptop and my tilt for wifi. How do i create a password for my computer?

i can understand somewhat if someone comes here asking how to do something on a phone that is in the manual.......but now u're asking something about setting a password on your computer.......i dont use vista, so i can exactly tell you where to look but, i hear that vista comes with this brand new thing.......its called the help files, you should check it out
why not just use logmein (www.logmein.com) easier, faster, better
from logmein use hamachi mobile on the laptop and hamachi regular on the desktop to bypass firewalls....
Oh never mind, you would still need to know how to setup basic network security etc.
If this is the route you want to go pm me and I can send you some links to get started. It's not really that complicated but depending on the details there are alot of variables. Would post the links but would have to start googliny myself
But if you google you find allthe answers and any guide telling you how to RD from a normal computer to another - just treat the handhelp RD software the same.
This is how you do it in XP, Vista setup has to be very similar I bet:
Set the password for the windows user account you log on to on your PC. This can be done in Control Panel - in the User Accounts application.
Next you have to activate the remote desktop function. This can be found by right-clicking My Computer, go to properties, and then to the "Remote" tab. Check the "Allow Users to connect remotely to this computer" box.
Now check your local ip. this can be done by selecting the "Run" button in start, then type cmd and hit enter. In the that window type: "ipconfig" (without the quotes) and a line will read IP address . . . . . 192.xxx.xxx.xxx or something of the sort.
Thats the IP address you connect to, and when the prompt for username and password comes out, type in your Windows User Account respective username and password.
Good luck =)

this is correct assuming you are:
A. attached to wireless
B. on the same network as the PC you are trying to control
if you want to control your home PC externally, there would be 1 additional step, and two optional but recommended steps.
To access remotely (from anywhere in the world), you would have to go into your router configuration and map port 3389 to the ip address of your vista machine. now for the two optional steps that would make your life easier...
1. set a static ip on your vista machine that is out of dhcp range.
2. use a service like dyndns.org and either set this up in your router if compatible, or install the free update client on your PC.
with this setup you should be able to access all your pc resources from anywhere in the world, not only on your PPC device, but any windows PC with a Remote Desktop client.
security note - set a strong password on your vista machine. port 3389 is well documented and scanned for by hackers. if the option is there, while your in your router turn off ping reply.
if all this is foreign to you, find me @ www.insiteitsolutions.com and i will take care of you.
Cab??
I can't find the remote desktop cab anymore. I tried searching the forums. I've looked at Dutty's site and all the cabs. Can someone point me to it please. I think maybe I am just not seeing it for some reason. I'm sure it's there, I've downloaded it before. Thanks!

Remote Shutdown of a Windows box using WinMob

Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone knows any program which will allow a WinMob device to initiate a remote shutdown of a windows system.
The closest thing I've found is using Remote Desktop to login and shutdown from there, but its not very practical for many computers...
Many thanks!
Might be able to use a free program called Putty that works on WM6 and a telnet or ssh server solution on the windows machince?
I thought of that, as I'm using pocket putty for my Linux server but it is still the same procedure as I have to login into all my boxes separately.
I was thinking something along the lines of the "shutdown" command windows have...

I am also having a hard time looking for the Mac Address? Any help from anyone?
This was a feature left out of Phone7 by Windows. The only way I can think of to obtain it is, if you're running Windows 7 and can make a virtual access point using Connectify to grab the Mac address once it connects to your computer

Yes it was confirmed also to me by HTC support that there is no way to look the mac address on the phone itself. The only way is to check the router's attached devices and check the mac address from there. I have to turn off the access control first of my Netgear router so that the HD7 will be able to connect to it.

Can't you then grab the Mac from the attached devices list and then apply it to your filter?

Good idea. Worked like a charm.
Here is an example of how to find it in a corporate environment. The following assumes you have access to the windows server that hands out DHCP addresses, assuming your wireless router does not. If your wireless router does, you should just be able to look it up in the DHCP client table of your device.
Anyhow...
I connect my HD7 to the wireless network, and the IP is supplied by the windows server. In the windows server, I go to DHCP and then Address Leases. I sort by expired date, and my device will be listed with the latest date, as it is the most recently connected device. I take note of the IP.
Then open a command prompt and type ARP -A
This will list the IP and MAC of all connected devices. Find your IP and there is your MAC.
The problem with my phone is that when I reboot it the mac address changes. My router works with a mac address filter. So I have to add a new mac address after each WP7 reboot.
Is there anyone with a solution?
If you unlock your device and install the Advance Configuration Tool the app shows you Mac address and other device details.

Are you sure? MAC address is strictly individual for each network adapter (ether or wlan).

I know that, but I think the wifi mac address used is a virtual one.
Yes I'm sure, the six last digits of my wifi mac address change, so I have to disable the mac address filter in my box, connect the phone, look in the box config which mac address is connected, add the new address to the authorized ones and turn on the address filter.
If you have a HD2 verify what I'm saying and you'll see I tell the truth.
cheap66, i have HD7 phone. My MAC Address is static. I use phone in my Uni. Administrators here use mac address filter too. I have no problems with that :|
He doesn't have an HD7.
In fact my phone is an HD2 and I think it's the reason why.

[Q] Why do I need Windows or a Mac?

Looks like all the PC/captivate sync programs are set up for Win or Mac PCs. Android is Linux, why aren't we running these progs in Linux? I have one PC in my house running Win7 just for stuff like this, the rest of the PC's on my network are all Linux. I would love to be able to ditch MS. Just saying...

The phone may be linux, but the universe isn't. I'd be happy with a mac client for firmware installs. these once click root programs and such are just front ends for adb which does indeed run on Linux.
