Imate K-Jam: Is an upgrade necessary? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Forgive my ignorance but i just bought an Imate KJam and I saw there was a newer ROM available. I'm currently running this system:
ROM: 1.1.9.3 Date 9/16/05
Radio: 01.01.10
Protocol 4.0.13.16
ExtROM: 1.1.9.106
I'm in canada on the Rogers gsm/gprs network and besides being slow at times, i have no issues with my device whatsoever.
I saw there was a newer ROM version,
K-JAM_WWE_216901_2169101_020710_ship.exe
is it worth installing? Is there a website where we can see the difference between the various ROM/Radio versions?
Thanks!

I would most certainly upgrade, but I'd think it's rather personal. It does really speed up your device, and give you some nice upgrades... (new CommManager for example)
Take Care!
Rik

yes go on!!!
one week ago i was in the same situation wondering if i go for an upgrade or not.
now i m very satisfied with my wizard as it become faster, more reliable, better BT...only good things.
and frankly i decided after reading a lot from this forum and was really confident that in any case someone will help to solve any difficulty if you follow basic role.
by the way before going ahead, remove all password protection, remove sim and microsd after backuping your important data.
for me the process lasted less than 20mn.i DLoaded the french rom 2.17, removed sim,sd card and pwd, desinstalled and reinstalled activesych to have a clean partnership, entered bootloader mode (?hesitation on that point no more sure if i did or not) ,launched the prog and followed recommendations. the upgrade itself took 10 mn but i noticed that at 50 and 80% everything seemed to stop for three or four mn but continued normally then do not panic when it seems that the process stop.
last word go ahead you will not regret it.
regards!

Orange M2000 upgrading (device info)

Hello
Have read the wiki and all the information and would like to upgrade however when it states select your original shippers rom, none of them match my details
I think i must have one of the first ones though cause i received my M2000 before all the stock issues occured with orange
Rom Details:
Operator Version: 5.12.1.139
ROM Version: 1.12.22 WWE
ROM Date: 09/27/04
Radio Version: 1.04.00
Protocol Version: 1337.35
ExtROM revsion: 1.12.139 WWE
any help would be appreciated as I really think its an old old release version
Thank You in advance
Welcome to the forum.
Your rom is old and we dont have many if any new Orange roms.
So if you want to upgrade the rom your best choice is the 1.40 and radio 1.10 or 1.12. (you will have to work out which one you need based on what you read here).
How to upgrade is on wiki.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_1.40.00_Upgrade
You might have to think about your Ext rom, unlocking it and saving the Orange related things.
Read the stuff again in the kitchen and here is what you have to work out what you want to save.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_ERK_X_112139
Have fun and yes most of your questions have answeres in wiki.
got an m2000 also. didnt read the instructions before doing a rom upgrade. the first couple of times i thought i had destroyed the phone cos it wouldnt boot up. installed the imate latest update and works like a beauty. latest everything on it.cant see any major differences from old rom that i can notice. apart from different wifi icon (prefer new one) and windows media player 10 (great). as fro expternal rom i also installed the imate one cos the orange was nothing special. dont miss any of the setting from it apart from the gprs which i barely use just latch on to wifi wherever i go. too many unsecure wifi connections in north london anyway
my upgrade to the Imate rom is complete, however i am wondering if i use XBackUp's backup or the backup i made prior to the ROM upgrade using ActiveSync, will actually just revert the roms back to how they were or will it just keep the same info and just restore my missing data??
Thank You for helping
hmm started restore anyway (thought i'd go on an adventure) then read some posts and found its not a good idea.
so my question has now changed to not if i shud restore but how do i save the txt msgs from the fone and put them back once i have reflashed the phone again?
Thank You

Newbie Problems with XDAIIs

Hi,
Have been reading the forum for a number of hours now....
I have big problems with my XDAIIs locking up. I am pretty certain it relates to the rom / image supplied with the phone - It locks up far more when O2 active (v3.6) is running.
I have read the sections on which upgrades but am more than a little confused. Can someone point me at the correct ROM to use. I downloaded the Qtek 1.40 rom but get region errors when i try and install. I have being trying to get my head round how i avoid this but guess im being stupid.
Help
Paul.
my rom 1.31.00 WWE
radio 1.13.00 (managed to update this)
ext rom 1.31.139 WWE
Paul, if you can, try doing a hard reset and when it asks for corporate or personal select corporate and put in the code 0506. It will then not install the O2 active software. It stopped mine hanging.
Hope it helps mate.
Jim
cool. will try that...
i actually managed to get it on 1.40 rom now.... just wish i had written down the gprs settings for o2...
Oh also read this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24480
but to be honest I tried that 1.40 rom and I had camera problems so I went back to the 1.31.00 WWE and it's fine for me mate (yes my radio is 1.13.00 as well now and my extended rom is an allsorts mix, but I'd read a lot more before fiddling with it!)
Ah, you've sorted it (I was typing as you replied). You could go back to the standard rom and then take note of the settings (I didn't as I'm too tight to pay for GPRS so I don't use it at all).
Let me know how you get on mate, especially try your camera.
Good luck.

Can I go back to WM2003?

I've got a Cingular SX66 that I upgraded to http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_5.1.1700_build_14343_Upgrade]WM 5 Build 14343 from the XDA Wiki.
Windows Mobile 5 has been running pretty crappy - not letting me answer calls, running slowly, it just isn't worth upgrading to (for me, anyway).
I really want to go back to WM2003, but I've read that the http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=91465#91465]ROM doesn't work - can anyone help me out?
Is there a way I can downgrade back to WM2003 and have everything working? If you know how to do this or (preferably) have done it yourself, I'd really appreciate at least somewhat detailed instructions. Thanks.
Excuse me but did you do ANY research at all on this before you upgraded? Every other post here states " READ THE WIKI".... A couple minutes worth of browsing the forums here and you would have had enough first hand user accounts of WM5 and then maybe you could have made an intellegent decision regarding possibly turning your device into a "brick" and positively voiding your warranty.
If you look around just a little more you'll find that the downgrade is very painless. Mamaich and others have painstakinly documented the complete downgrade procedure. It's on the same page that you dl'ed the upgrade from ... the quick link is http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Downgrade_WM5
Good luck!
SX66 (PH20B1) [Cingular]
ROM: 5.03.02 WWE
ROM date: 03/02/05
Ext ROM: 1.1.9.106
Radio: 1.15.00
Wow. Did I do any research? Yes, I linked to a page with a discussion about people doing the downgrade and having their Radio completely not work.
I guess you made the exact same totally intelligent decision as I did when you yourself upgraded the exact same device to WM5?
If *you* take 10 seconds to check the link that you posted, you'll see that in step #2, the only ROM available for the SX66 did not pass their tests and that, oh, what's this? The Radio doesn't work, just like the discussion I linked to.
Please don't assume I'm an idiot. Hacking handheld ROMs is not something you should get all offensive and riled up about.
Thanks for nothing. Does anyone have any other info?
hmmm... I have pda2k and I upgrade and downgrade all teh time... is the problem you are talking about specific to sx66?
FedoraPunk I never meant to call you an idiot, just curious on why you did an upgrade after discovering that many people had problems going back? Yes I have the same device. And the first time I did the downgrade, back in July, there wasn't a step 2 ... I took a big chance when Buzz, Mamaich and company started this particular forum knowing that I could very well blow up my device. I'm not riled and I apoligize if I'm offensive to you, I just didn't understand your decision to upgrade after learning the facts.
I personally have upgraded and downgraded my device at least 15 times since then, with no problems going back to WM 2003 excepting an ocassional ActiveSync issue downgrading to 3.8
What I suggest is to use Chris' SX66 (Blue Angel) Standardization Project at http://sx66-blueangel.home.comcast.net/
Replace the Standard and Extended Roms with his cooked ROM's. Any problems just ask and I'll be happy to help.

ROM: 5.03.02 WWE
ROM date: 03/02/05
Ext ROM: 1.1.9.106
Radio: 1.15.00
I have (personally) upgrade & downgrade SX66 myself using the link provided above and did not run into any issues.
What exactly are not working after downgrading? Maybe I can check (if I decided to downgrade again)
Ok, I got the right ROM from Chris's site (I chose the 1.33.51 because it's 2003 with WMP10) but I don't know which Radio ROM to flash - can I use 1.15.00? Or is there one that 2003 likes?
I'm using 1.15 with no problems. I personally use the 1.40 but that's me.
Good luck.
Steven
btw, I just went back to WM 2003 less than an hour ago ......

ROM: 1.40.00 WWE
ROM date: 03/102/05
Ext ROM: 1.40.125 WME

Aright, I got 2003 back on there no sweat.
I wanna put radio 1.15, but the directions I'm getting are confusing me. I've got an SX66, unlocked. Could someone send me the deviceinfo or whatever it is? I've got the ROM and the Update app, I'm just fuzzy on what else to do.
Simply replace the radio rom file (radio.nbf) with the new radio rom and run MaUpgradeUt_noID. Being that you've already installed the Rom of choice simply rename / move that file from the install directory on your PC. I personally have never lsot any data or configuration settings by upgrading the radio this way.

I tried that, and got the device ID error. I need some file to tell the updater what device or something?
I have the same problem with that. I used to uninstall AS 4.1 and put 3.8 back on. However now I've gone back and forth so many times with AS that 4.1 won't entirely uninstall. I have to run AS 4.1 now. I use 2nd computer, install AS 3.8, do not configure sync. Place device in bootloader mode and the run the MaUpgradeUt_noID.

Hell yeah - I had to figure out which radio 1.15 file to use, but I got this thing working and signal strength does seem better.

8125 assistance

Hello All,
Yes I am a newby here and I have tried to search for my answers so please do not flame me too bad.. I have an 8125 on Cingular service that has the origional ROM and I would like to upgrade it. I have reviewed the post and they are really hard to follow as they split off to multiple threads and almost always assume that you know the correct steps to follow.
Has anyone posted a "how to" for those of us that are new here? If not would someone like to talk me through it?
Thanks so much for your help
Mark
I am looking for the same thing.
Any one know of any how-to's?
It's very simple.
Connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable
CID unlock the phone
SIM unlock the phone
Double-click the upgrade ROM on your PC - it automatically installs
Restore your settings to your phone
You only need to unlock the CID and SIM once. There's a program called lokiwiz which you can download from this board. It runs in text mode, but it's very simple... just be sure to un-zip it to the root of your C:\ drive (it must be C:\Lokiwiz, don't put it in your Program Files folder).
You run Lokiwiz twice, once to SIM unlock and again to CID unlock. There are several threads here about how to run this software; the only "gotcha" is that it only works on the older software (which your phone has now).
After your install the new ROM, your phone is "factory clean." All of your phone numbers and settings are gone, so you have to restore them.
To restore your settings:
Run ActiveSync to restore your contacts and appointments
Go into the e-mail app to re-configure your e-mail settings
Re-install any add-on software you were using
I literally just got my 8125 a week ago, I haven't had time to do much with it yet either. I have downloaded just about every file I think I will need, and I already have a bluetooth headset, and bluetooth GPS mouse
Personally I think we should all back-up our phones right now before doing anything else, hah.
I'm currently searching on how to do this, I have downloaded Wiz backup.
Also I just want to add I currently havewhen booting up phone)
IPL 1.08
SPL 1.08
Radio 01.09.11
OS 1.8.11.1
Looking under device information:
ROM ver./Date : 1.8.11.1 WWE / 11/24/05
Protocol version: 4.0.13.20
Extended Rom version: 1.8.11.103
So I'm also researching "from where my device is starting" what is the best ROM or software upgrade to perform, and unlock tool to use.
Any information is much appreciated, good luck to us beginners, and thanks for any more experience on advice taking proper precautions backing up, in a way that will definately restore original software and settings.
I really don't need a $400.00 brick!

Here is how I started at this site
Start with http://wiki.xda-developers.com/ the wiki pages are a great source for the basics on unlocking, acronyms, general information and questions. It made reading and understanding the threads much easier. I may be a geek but I’m no programmer. I’ve flashed my phone half dozen times & yes I have screwed it up a couple times by not following the instructions, but never “bricked” my phone.
My philosophy has always been RTFM (Read the F___ Manual)…. Well since the Cingular manual and inside scoop on how these HTC phones operate & program was non existent, welcome to the biggest online manual available! It may not be the best organized and simplest to follow, but man there’s a lot of good information here.
Good luck & welcome to the board!!

Thank you lotech for that post...looks like good advice.

Have Defalt Rom (1.62.502). looking at DeathV4 Business Edition but have questions

So i have a basic tilt:
ROM: 1.62.502.0
Radio: 1.27.14.09
Protocol: 22.45.88.07H
Looking at the DeathV4 rom that looks pretty sweet...
stupid question since the tilt is new to me. When i load the rom i know i lose all of the settings on the phone and stuff. for the installed programs i can just reinstall them from the add/remove programs in the activesync manager, correct ?? or am i stuck re-installing everything from scratch ?
and are there a lot of benefits with this rom over the default one from AT&T ?
does it change the PTT button to something useful ?
When you reflash, you lose everything in your phone's storage memory. You will have to reinstall everything from scratch, however, there are ways you can automate this process (search SASHIMI or UC or Tier Autoinstall), but if this your first flash, these might seem a bit complicated.
You should notice quite a speed and performance difference from the stock ATT rom to Death v4, and I think your rom is a Windows Mobile 6.0 ROM, so you'll notice threaded SMS in 6.1.
And in Death v4, assuming you download the non-PTT version, it makes the button mapable, just like any other button if you go into Settings -> Buttons, you can set the PTT button to do anything you want.
awesome.. i have flashed many phones before at work, just didn't care about the information becuase i was giving them to other people. i just have too much custom software on here that will be a pain, but the benefits of the new rom are far greater for me. so i think the new rom is going on as soon as i have the phone charged.
thanks
should i worry about updating the radio as well ? should i do that after the install of the new rom ?

radio yes .. u need a radio as the rom doesn't have one... Any one of the new wm6.1 radios will work and also the neon radio in my sig will work as well.
To save yourself problems ... before you go flashing make sure you have Hardspl flashed first... read the wiki section on rom upgrading and flashing and than after doing the homework proceed. a little work ahead of time will save you tons of problems later.
And yes you need to reintall everything from scratch ... as already answered
Death 3.5 was my first flash, then 4.1 (which went even smoother). I'm glad I went at it thinking I'd end up doing it twice (4.0 was already being talked about, so I figured I'd get a do-over )
Check the wiki: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading and read along w/ the instructions. In a nutshell, here's what I did:
Jump SPL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354061 JumpSPL1.56-KAIS.exe worked for me (10 min)
Hard SPL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396922 3.56 (10 min)
Flash ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400278 Death, is quite nice (15 min)
Flash Radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393182 1.65.20.29 my phone has NEVER worked better, ever! (10 min)
And lastly, Customize and Install Applications (oh good god, forever but FUN!) [I tested if it worked off the SD card from previous installs first, then installed if it didn't].
Good luck and have fun! It's totally worth it =)
i have the following ready.. (just running a backup of the phone right now)..
1 - Hard-SPL-V7
2 - DeathV4_BE
3 - KAISER_Radio_1.65.14.06 or
KAIS_Radinly_1.65.20.29_CustomRUU (haven't decided yet)
