Hey there,
Trying my best to keep up with this site. I'm not a PC user, I am a MAC user. My knowledge of upgrading my MDA is weak and i really have no idea how to. I hear of REGISTRIES alot on this site. And that changing them is the only way to update my device to make it "better."
Is there a thread(s) or advice someone could post for me regarding updating and upgrading my device. I'm eager to understand what ROM's and REGISTRIES can do for me and how I change them. I just have no clue.
Since I'm on a MAC will I be able to UPGRADE my device with out a PC? I apologize for asking such basic questions. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
whalien
whalien - the registry is a central tree type information store used by all modern windows operating systems to store system based info, eg your registered name, gprs settings etc.
This stuff can be hacked directly on the device, in fact that's the easiest way. Use a registry editor, some are free, I believe PHM has one, and some aren't. But for what you need to do, PHM should be fine.
Read the wiki or the necessary threads on what each hack does, centralising it, although useful, would never be complete since there's an endless world in the registry.
It can be dangerous - so backing up your phone is useful, but just don't be too hamfisted and delete huge chunks of the registry, and you'll be fine.
Other questions I'll leave to someone else.

backing up the phone
what should i back up? i just bought a 512MB miniSD. also, i don't have a PC so i've no interface to use between my home computer and my device.
thanks for the insight on the registry. kinda scary to think i could totally screw my phone up and that T-Mobile won't have to help me because that voids the warranty.
any more thoughts? i really appreciate your response.

I am looking to learn some programming. I need some sort of aim. I mainly use a mac but I own an alpine. Rather than spend the cash to get a mac sync program i have made do with other peoples PC's to install programs on the alpine.
However, i would like to write a program to sync the contacts on my alpine (I have the 2020i version) with 'contacts' on my mac. Can anyone tell me where i can get the information needed for talking to the the alpine via USB? Its probably way over my head but I cant see any other thing to aim for. I have a bunch of other far more complicated audio related programs I need to write once Ive learnt so this is the easy one in comparison.
In fact I guess I need the spec for the Activesync program on the Alpine as that is what i will be talking to from the mac. Is that correct? Any info appreciated. Thanks
DO NOT USE THIS!!

I tried to use this app to create a cab file. It has an internal virus that changes the username of your phone to a Chinese variant when the created cab is run. (not sure why?)
Knew nothing about this until my Worldmate and Resco shut down on my TyTynII (they check their codes with username everytime you sync online).
Guess AV for WM is something to look at now!!
A virus? I doubt it...
Don't overreact and waste money on virus program for WM6. The experts may correct if I am wrong but I still can remember only 1 test case of a "sample" virus in windows mobile a few years back.
And changing your phone's user name to the chinese equivalent, considering it is possibly written by someone who is, uh, chinese, doesn't constitute a virus.

I did not suggest to anyone to go out and buy AV software but, I can send you the .cab file if you would like to check for youself??
A virus or Trojan would not have to specifically work with onboard comms apps on the WM unit but so many people (especially in the US) are tethering there devices now giving a 'back door' so to speak..
It would not take much for a small packe on your WM device to drop items into your Outbox and when you sync, hey presto, it goes.
Basic PC AV would not see this.
EDIT: OK, for want of a better term, cal it Malware...Take a look at this, it's a bit long winded but gives you some idea. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/reference/malicious.threats.to.pdas.html
I would like to change some of the functionality of the programs that came with my Kaiser. I'm at home developing on Windows and Linux but have never done any Windows Mobile development.
I know basically what I want to do but I need a little help with tools to get me started. What programs should I use to attach to my device, and how can I debug/step through running programs? I'm assuming things might be different when the program in question is native vs managed code and when I don't have the source code.
Any suggestions or pointers to good information would be greatly appreciated.
hey guys, i recently upgraded to tomtom7, however, i would like to also move all my favorites from tomtom6 without having to manually enter all of them. where would i find those on my memory card so i can transfer them? thanks
omar
Anyone?
This is something I've been trying to find how as its incredibly frustrating, I can't see anything in the original documentation or anything on how to do this.
Have you tried here, http://www.tomtom.com/support/support.php?ID=2&Language=4???????????????
This is XDA-Developers, not TomTom support. Geesh!

Correct, and unless I'm very mistaken many people discuss various 3rd party software applications, their merits and also tweaks/twiddles to make them work correctly on their Kaiser, etc.
Checking the software forum I see various other topics that you could apply the same logic to.
BTW; TomTom actually advise to manually re-enter the favourites between versions, which isn't a very good customer support reply in my opinion. I'm now following a path which shows the .cfg in the maps folder seems to be the key to migrating favourites over.
I was trying to look what's on the Forum ftp and I noticed that I can't get to the 'Diamond' folder?
All other folders ( I haven't tried all ) I can get in to.. but not 'Diamond...
I think this would be an excellent place to upload all Games, Apps, SPL, ROM's, themes....and so on... and have it linked with the wiki!
I think the wiki isn't being used as it should... or am I wrong?
Anyone know anything about this?
I'm sorry if this shuld have been posted somewhere else, but it is about the Diamond...
hi there. you know, there is a problem with storing MS property... microsoft said, that we cannot store ROMs, radios and other MS stuff, because you just bought license to use that software, no that software itself. too bad, because now you need to search a lot for older versions of ROMs and software, and it is not on one place. There is also a petition against microsoft to allow us sharing and modification of their windows mobile. if you are intrested, sign in - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294213
ok, that to bad
As you said, now everything is scaddered all over...
But It's still the best place for me and my Diamond!
BIG thanx to everybody!
Yeah, I've signed the petition!
