Help: Activesyn crashed during .cab installation - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

This is the second time this happened to me. The first time I remedied the matter with a hard reset.
I recently upgraded my ROM to the 2.24 version (thanks by the way). This evening I was installing a number of third party programs on my 8125 when I had one program not install. After that, I lost my activesynce connections (I was still connected but I could no longer sync and all of my contacts, emails, etc. were not showing). Also, I am unable to install (or remove) any .cab files. When I go into my settings > system > remove programs, NO programs show up there. Last night, the programs I had installed were there.
I have soft reset my device and rebooted my computer. Nothing happened. I deleted my device on both my computer and on the 8125 and resynced but nothing happened. The last time this happened I tried the install / unitstall process of Activesync and could never get it working.
I am just sick about this.
Can someone tell me why I can no longer install or remove .cab files and why my programs do not show up in the 'remove programs' screen?
Thanks

Adding to my post...
I should say that I have Activesync 4.2 beta installed. I also note that in the Settings > System > Remove Programs it shows "Total storage memory available: " In other words it shows nothing.

Removing programs

I like to install trials to check out new stuff and such, but since my phone hasnt got unlimited space I need to remove them as well.
Now the problem is that when I go to settings > system > remove programs
it only lists the first 11 programs that I've installed myself.
Is there a tweak or a registry setting that can be used to keep that program list updated and show every program installed.
If not, how can I uninstall a program completely ?
there should be shown every programm you installed, if you installed it with a cab or over active-sync
on my phone there are over 20 programms without any problem.
perhaps you just copied the software?!
otherwise check active-sync extras->software there should also been listed the installed software with a cross in front, if it is installed on your pda or just on you pc
I installed everything (all cab files) through active sync.
My rom is still the original one too, but only the first 11 programs are listed on my device.

Remove Programs -Programs in storage memory is empty so I cant uninstall or install

When I clicked on the Remove Programs icon, the Programs in storage memory was blank. No programs were listed. However, all the programs on the tilt work.
The other odd thing is that cant install anything now. I tried to install a cab and I received the "programs was unsucessfully installed". The last program I installed before I noticed this issue was resco. Any ideas, I dont want to try a hard reset. Thanks.
I am also having activesync issues.
No Ideas?
Is there a reg hack anyone can think of? My bigest issue is not being able to uninstall/install anything!
Please specify more on the active sync issues? You might have to do a hard reset, or else this problem will stay. And are you talking about the ROM built apps or apps you installed your self?

I have had the same problem twice already.
The first time I did a hard reset and started from scratch, the second time (this week) I just restored a backup I made with sprite backup and everything was working again
Just make sure the backup, (you do have one don't you) was made when the remove programs still showed the programs that were installed.
active sync issue
when I connect the tilt to my laptop active sync on the computer sees the tilt but I cant sync. I can explore the tilt. When they connect the computer says close to the following, "Sync cannot be completed sucessfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists see active sync help." I click ok and a new profile is create each time.
Now for what active sync says on the tilt. It says, "To synchronize your device with a desktop computer, install the synchronization software from the Getting Started Disc included with your device on your PC.
IF you company supports syncing directly with its Exchage Server you can set up your device to sync to it.
Learn more about synchronizing with a server."
The Sync button is greyed out as is options.
O ya, I did do several sprite restores from as far back as one month, (I do a backup at least twice a week) and still the same issue.
Any ideas?

Your registry is corrupted and the solution is a hard reset and then reinstall of your add on programs.
I've seen this several times on the Wizards. I've also seen the same problem in Win 2000 and Win XP.
If my reg was currupt, couldnt a restore fix it? I have tried that to no avail.
ive had this issue before, Just delete the partnership and create a new one/ restart computer(had too for my case, maybe it will help yours).

The problem is more then likely that your backups all have the same problem in them.
The only solution I could find is to do a hard reset (clear Storage) reinstall all apps etc, make a backup and keep it in a safe place then make another backup whenever something is added or removed, just make sure that all programs show in the remove programs screen before you make the backup, otherwise a restore will not help.
Another observation I have made is that each time it's happened to me I've either dropped or banged the PDA.
Thanks all for your help. Say if I do a hard reset and then do a restore from a backup, will I have to Reinstall all the software? The reason I ask is that I bought this phone used on ebay and it came with all the software loaded. There are a lot of programs and I cant find the installation programs on the phone of sd card.

You will need to reinstall all of the software first, and then do a restore.
BUT as I have said, if the backup is the same as the PDA ie: no programs listed under uninstall it won't help, you will need to reinstall everything again.

Specifically what is the current problem?

HELP I Cant Install any programs (cabs)

When I clicked on the Remove Programs icon, the Programs in storage memory was blank. No programs were listed. However, all the programs on the tilt work.

i hjave the same problem!!!!!!!!!!!
Very strange - I have the same issue and it just started today. Installed software won't run and I can't install any cabs. Just says it was unsuccessful.
Anyone?
try downloading pocket mechanics, it shows all programs installed and a clean up tool and see if it shows it there, u can delete them through ur program files....see if that works lettme kno how it goes
Tried soft resetting a few times - nothing. Backed up device to my storage card using Sprite Backup and did a hard reset.
Before restoring I tried to install a cab - worked.
Restoring device now from backup....
After restoration installation of cabs - Unsuccessful. Must be sometime in the registry/system?
My question - what did we do in common to get this problem?
Today I swapped SIM cards with another AT&T phone and then put the original one back. I also ran the JumpSPL1.56KAIS on the device but reset at the tri-color screen due to a lack of time.
It is very frusterating as I dont know what to do. Any since I cant load any programs like pocket mechanics I dont know what else to do. Backups didnt help and I know the ones I had a month back showed the programs listed in the Remove Programs tool. THERE MUST BE A REG HACK THAT WILL FIX THIS! Anyone?
The last programs I installed before this happned was the Resco explorer.
Also I have a activesync issue that started about the same time which I have in another post.
I ended up hard resetting it again and am just re-installing everything.

Weird worry with trusted certificates

Hi,
i needed to restore my device from a backup with Sprite version 6.2.2(upgrade full version not the light one coming with my stock rom) ,
when a strange event occured:
After the restore and the device's reboot all none pre-installed(thoses present in stock roms) softwares werent able to be launched,
i had a message " not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found"
and if i cliked on "yes", i had another message like "pocket informant failed to launched /Or editor unknown" and that with all the soft i had installed since my kaiser purchasing(voice command(from MS !)pocket mechanics , phm regedit, even sprite backup).
I tried the xdadevelopper kaiser tweak.exe and advanced schapps configuration tool(to tweak the "none trusted cabs installation security" but both refused to "run"(kaiser tweak) or be installed (schapp's) from my sdcard and so tried to run an install from my
pc of "phm regedit" but windows mobile center 6.1(under vista) gave me an error "unable to install/install failed" like if all my device was 'read only'
or if no "administrator privileges" were given to me on the device(from laptop or its sdcard).
ps:i wasnt able to merge(double tap) even a registry backup made on my sdcard before or install the SDK certs cab file .
So from my backup folder on my sdcard(where i had 3 different backups with 3 different dates), i tried to run the backup.exe(s), but i had the same worries(the exe wasnt able to be launched).
I decided to wipe out all datas via 'parameters/system/wipe' all datas"(kind of "soft" hardreset) (reboot+"device's first use configuration")and run the backup from the sdcard without any luck.
(the restore is done but at the device start i had many errors like "Pi calendar failed to launch", "voice command" etc
the only way to retrieve my device was to wipe out all datas
like just above and launch a restore from sprite backup on my laptop
(i had to reconnect/disconnect/reboot from usb my device +wmc 6.1 close/"re-launch", 2 or 3 times, in order to be able to restore it)
What i dont understand, last week i had to do a full restore from one of my backups (from sd card ) and it worked(no certificate worry and without prior wipe out) :
So when i wipe out all the kaiser and launch a restore from sdcard
why do i have a worry with "trusted certificates" as the backup is an image
of what was working(when created), it's as if some registry parts or "certificates"(dont know what kind of files, it is) were missing
why?
any idea replies will be welcome !
thanks in advance
Hi, I had the Problem today,too... when Sprite Backup fails oder something like that, then all no plugged-in certificates are away.
I don't know, where I could restore them - some people who had the same problem didn't found any help by restoring a former backup.
But there's a (little bit annoying) solution WITHOUT Hard-Reset :
1. At first you need a Registry Editor - and I think your Registry Editor won't work, too - because of the certificate.
So - Reinstall it
2. Then go to the Key HLKM\Security\PromptExclusionList and erase everything (except from DEFAULT). So that Registry-Directory is empty.
Now there are the thirst-party-Certificates are no more known from Windows Mobile
3. Now go to your Programs in Programms-Menue which didn't worked... you will be prompted everytime because of the certificate - and confirm it with yes... and you have the certificate for further times
When you have very much programs installed... then you will have very much to confirm... but after a Hard-Reset... I think that's much more mork, isn't it? Especially when you have a special theme (I love the black theme for 1.93)...
Hope it works fine, too. And I'll have a look for another Backup Tool, which makes Backups and doesn't destroy certificates

Hey,
Just had this problem too, no one seems to have written the solution about this. I had to do a hard reset my certificates were also missing, also I was unable to remove installed programs via remove programs. Using HTC Touch HD with stock WM6.1 and upgraded Radio 1.12.25.16.
The back up was made by SunnySoft 3.7 and was a self executed one, which I did once the hard reset was completed. However, I found if I then reinstalled SunnySoft via Active Sync and then restored the backup again this solved the certificate problem but not the uninstall one.
I am now trying a new hard reset and then install SunnySoft before I restore anything, hopefully this will work.
No joy with the backup. The problem with the certificates was because SunnySoft program wasn't restoring the whole backup (I guess due to its size), works better when files restored bit by bit.
However, everything appears to be fine until I try to Remove installed software...Nothing I can do allows me to remove anything from the program list, just says it wasn't uninstalled properly do I want to remove it from the list (but doesn't). I can't even reinstall the software to fix it, just fails install.
Is there anyway to rebuild the program list or reinitalise the list to install over the top again and allow items to be uninstalled? Where are these settings located?
Failing that, I'll want to rebuild the system from scratch, but I need to know where the contacts and SMS messages are located in the system (so I can at least keep these).
Thanks for any assistance in advance. By the way, what is the best backup software which works for WM6.1???
Solution...
Moved on a bit with this (sorry if no one is interested in my self replies but this might help someone with the same issue)
The Remove Programs seems to end up in two different states:
1) Blank and new installs fail 2) Populated but programs can not be removed but new installs work (This state we can work with).
I think to get to state 2 the difference is installing Sunnysoft Backup after the Hardrest via active sync (I guess this helps it initialise the Remove Programs list).
Restore Data:
As mentioned before if the Restore doesn't work in one go (mine is about 50Mb compressed) then only restore the files (all except windows/internal store/registry/database), this gets a good chunk out of the data out of the way (the system resets after which is why we purposely miss out anything which effects what runs on the system). Now restore all the "folders" within windows (except appdb/AppMgr/Start Menu/Start Up/System and files within Windows), again this avoids anything new running without everything being ready when it restarts. Finally, restore the Database, Registry, Internal Storage and any remaining folders & files within windows. If you don't get certificate issues and the Remove Programs is populated it is ok to move on to the next bit.
Remove Programs:
This problem here is the SunnySoft backup defaults to not including tmp files. Unfortunately the registry references to tmp files stored in Windows\AppMgr\{appname}\ which are now no longer there (THANK YOU SO MUCH!!), this is what is stopping the program from being removed or reinstalled correctly.
1. Look up the name of the tmp file in the registry: HKLM\Security\AppInstall\{appname}\Uninstall\
2. Copy an old tmp file with the correct name i.e.1001.tmp in Windows\AppMgr\{appname}\. NOTE: Install a new program, copy it's tmp file. Then uninstall the new program again.
3. You can also note down the references to the other files if you don't have the original install (but this won't be the cleanest way).
4. You can now go ahead and remove the program from Remove Programs List.
5. Finally remove the files you noted or reinstall the program (and uninstall as you would before if required)
How stupid.

Can not delete/ rename files through explore or on device. Unable to synchronize.

Heres a strange one.....
Just recently tried to sync my MDA Compact 4 and got the following error message:
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer."
On investigating further, i tried the following suggestions:
- Turned off all firewalls
- Removed partnership between phone and pc (on both the phone and pc)
- Unchecked "Enable advanced network functionality" in USB to PC settings on the phone
- Reinstalled Activesync 4.5 (and also a tried a repair)
- Different USB cable and USB port (not using a USB hub)
- Several soft reboots
and finally tried a different PC just to see if i could get a guest partnership! Guess what? Same error message.
I am, however, able to explore the phone with activesync but only explore. I cant change file names, add files or delete.
On even further investigation, i've now also discovered that i cant delete/ rename files on the phone itself (using file explorer on either the device or internal storage). When i do, i get the following message:
"Cannot remove/ rename etc: Access is denied.
Be certain that the folder/file is not write-protected and is not currently in use"
(Even creating a new folder and then immediately trying to delete it gives the same error)
If i connect the phone to the PC as a disk drive though, i am able to delete files just fine. Add new files, rename them etc....without any problems.
This leads me to believe that the problem is with Windows Mobile!?!
Has anyone else experienced the same/ similar problem and figured out how to fix it? (Other than perform a HARD reset/ Clearing the storage)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
UPDATE:
I found this on the Microsoft help forum.
Although it hasnt fixed my problem, it might help someone else who is having the same problem.
1) soft reset device
2) Start / Office Mobile / Word
3) Create a new document (click on New)
4) type some text (just plain text - no formatting - it was 'plain text document') just a few characters
5) File / Save As...
6) I have selected type 'Plain Text'
7) It asked me whether I want to save it at 'Word document instead' - I clicked No.
8) I have powered off the device and did soft reset
9) Start file explorer, find the file (it was in My Device / My Documents), click on it - it opens Word again.
10) Add some formatting (I have selected part of text and changed font to bold)
11) Close Word - it asked whether to save it in Word format - this time I said Yes
12) Power-off the device and press soft reset again
Also, i noticed that i am able to modify any DOCX or TXT file within Mobile Word (and even delete them) just not from File explorer on the device or Explore within ActiveSync.
Can anyone help???
Same problem with different model

You're not alone. I have HTC Touch Pro (ie. Raphael) with exactly the same problem and I've also already tried that "Word-solution" several times without any help. However I can synchronize with my exchance server via 3G. I can also add/remove/rename files if I use some of the Office mobile applications, but not with file explorer.
Getting sooooo frustrated, but still not willing to do the hard reset.
Do both of you by any chance have Fsecure Mobile installed? Just trying to narrow the cause for the problem.
Same Problem Here
I have a T-Mobile Wing and I'm having the exact same problem. Anyone figure out whats up yet? It's so strange that I can delete/remove files and folders through active sync, but I can't through the device file explorer. I have also tried creating a folder with the file explorer, but then I cant delete, move or rename it.
Here's something that might work for you, http://www.24hsoftware.com/How-To/this-device-is-restricted-from-downloading-this-file-type.html
Unfortunately it hasn't work on any devices that I've seen but then again, I'm still thinking that F-secure mobile is causing the problems in our devices. F-secure has confirmed that they have heard about the problem and are investigating it.
This is very interesting as in the past 24 hours my Xperia X1 has started to do the same, I can create files ok but am unable to remove/copy files.
I am using f-secure mobile security, so it would seem there is an issue there. I'll fire an email to them to get myself on a fix list when it comes out if that's the problem!!
Any news on this issue?
I am using a trial version of F-secure mobile (on my SE Xperia, a sort of HTC ). Now, out of the blue I am experiencing similar problems:
- not able to connect to pc via Active Sync
- not able to delete/rename/copy files on both internal as external memory
- programlist appears empty
Did anyone try to remove F-secure to solve the problem?
Thanks.
I just got a reply from F-secure. They have identified the problem and are expecting to release a new version of the client within next two weeks.
Hopefully that's the end of this...

Updated client was published on last friday.
I am experiencing a very similar problem on my HTC HD2 with wm6.5. If I connect the phone as USB mass storage i can copy files as much as I want to on the SD card, however when I disconnect the cable after copying WM6.5 cant read the folder sometimes.
Othertimes when I connect the phone as Activesync and start to copy some files, it stops half way through, sayign "access is denied". if that happens I cant transfer any files anymore, it will always give same error until some time passes, few disconnections, restarts, no consistency, no definite workaround. The strange is when it gets into this "access is denied" mode I can still browse the device (storage card) and create and delete folders. very-very frustrating.... did a few soft and hard resets, reinstalled activesync couple of times, still no joy...and i dont have any FW app on my device...
thanks.
