Customising GPRS/MMS settings - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hey Helmi, Great ROM!!
At last a ROM we can enjoy! I have been following the various threads on this subject but due to my lack of programming/hacking knowledge i have kept my mouth shut most of the time.
Since there is no customisation CAB for my operator i would like to make one. Can anyone help me go about it?

Would be glad to offer the german Providers if someone could explain howto ..

You can find cabs for most operators around on the net, there's usually already one there for your operator. The best places to look are either on xda-developers or modaco.com. I know that the latter has an official settings repository for just this sort of thing.

Small network operator seeking help with amending ROMs

Hi everyone
I work for a very small mobile operator, we purchase through the O2 UK sales channel so therefore sell the UK version of the O2 XDA2S, which comes pre-installed with the O2 UK ROM, but we have our own GPRS APN connection details etc.
We don't usually sell a huge volume in any one month, due to the fact it is a small market, so setting up our own connection details and 'today screen' on an individual device basis hasn't been a huge hassle.
However I have now been asked to investigate delivering a large quantity (hundreds) preconfigured to a customer. Apologies if this is obvious to some of you (and I did do a search hehe but don't quite understand some of the apps and tweaks I've seen), but is there an application that allows me to tweak the ROM to change the preinstalled O2 connection details to our own? If so I would be hugely grateful if someone could explain in a relatively simple way how to achieve this.
Very many thanks in advance for any help!
Ariel xxx
You need to have a better understanding of the device and how the applications are placed on it (that come from the operator o2 as well as your own ones).
What you are trying to do we refer to as cooking the exteneded rom.
What we mean by this is taking out components that are not needed or wanted and adding others such as today plugins.
Thus you can create a Exteneded rom and ship this with the update utilaty provided by the manufacture.
Please read the threads in wiki in the exteneded rom kitchen.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel
As an operator can you get hold of:
"Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Adaptation Kit Update 2 (AKU2)"
This is shiped to HTC and then passed on to the operator (o2) thus you.

Cingular 8125 ROM upgrade... why?

I'm referring to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45295
(Cingular 8125 users: 2 custom RUU upgraders available on ftp)
What's the benefit of using that over the stock cingular rom? It still has goodlink and expressmail installed so it's not really saving any space. Does it just offer a better OS with less errors and more speed?
Also, referring to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=47052
(Cingular 8125 users: 217 ROM w/ fonts, themes, oclock on ftp)
I can see some improvements. Themes, ringtones, and omapclock have been installed while goodlink and expressmail have been removed. I don't need the themes, ringtones, or omapclock.exe... but since this version doesn't have goodlink or expressmail this would be better for me then the first ROM I listed correct?
I can't test myself yet because my 8125 doesn't get here for another 12 hours or so. But I'm trying to prepare so when I get it I know exactly what to install to get it up and running ASAP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
In the first case, there were two ROMs listed for download - one is the stock Cingular 1.8 ROM and one was upgraded to the MSFP/AKU2 ROM with the Cingular customizations. When this was first posted, neither HTC America, nor Cingular, made the original ROM version available for download - so if you upgraded to one of the other ROM's, it was virtually impossible to go back to the stock Cingular ROM.
In the other case, a lot of the ringers and themes are now stored in ROM, in lieu of taking up memory. It is a personal preference.
I upgraded to the AKU2 update ROM from the first thread so I could get Push Mail. Plus it is significantly faster than the original Cingular ROM.
Is there a post about all the versions of ROM?
Excuse my lack of knowledge, but I'm just a baby beginner when it comes to Wizards... just switched from HP 6515. I don't even know what AKU2 means, nor which update would be best for my needs.
I'd like to learn about it. But don't want people to write what has already been written, so could you provide me some links to the "history" of ROMs?
Thanks...

Browse this forum and you'll learn plenty. AKU2 is essentially like a service pack. It inludes OS fixes, and in the case of AKU2, it adds support for Microsoft's Direct Push, which requires an Exchange (service pack 2) account to function.
There's really only three major ROM types for the Wizard: the shipping version which came on your device, modified 2.0X ROMs which include Direct Push and support for bluetooth stereo, and 2.X ROMs which include Direct Push but NOT bluetooth stereo. The various 2.X ROMs you see are just various AKU2 releases from different vendors like QTek or Imate, as well as custom variations of those ROMs.
You're most likely to run across custom ROMs US carriers T-Mobile and Cingular, because they have yet to release official AKU2 ROMs.
What are your needs and who's your carrier?
Thank you for your explanation. This is actually where my journey to the world of Wizards begin
My provider is Cingular...
My needs? Hmm... tough one ;-)
Up till now I've been using HP 6515. Mostly for listening to music (not via BT) and ocasionally playing Microsoft's Cubicle Chaos. (Sometimes both at the same time)
I use some Today Screen plugins...
I'm a pretty heavy phone user (1-2 hours talk time per day) and messaging person (about 800 per month). I don't use GPRS, since Cingular's prices on it simply SUCK!
And I'm always looking for some new uses for my phone...

OK then, I think the custom 2.17 Cingular ROM is appropriate for you. It has push mail, but since you won't be using that, you'll at least gain the benefits of improved stability and performance.
Check out the thread I started about 2 custom ROMs for CIngular users being available on the ftp. There's a link directly to the 2.17 installer.
Be aware that you will lose anything you've installed, so you'll have to reinstall everything to your liking as you did when the device was new.
Thanks a lot, Summiter.
You've given me a lot of explanation and I'm grateful to you.
I'll sure check out that thread.
Cheers.
Hi there summiter.
I want to download/install the ROM you are mentioning, but the FTP link in your post is broken...may you offer some help as to where I can find it?
I have a Cingular 8125 that I'd like to update with the 2.17 ROM you mention.
Nevermind, I found a working link in another post.
Going to try the 2.17 with AKU2, Ringers, and oclock. I'll see how it goes!
How to -exactly
I too am new in the HTC world having come from years of Blackberrries. The info on the ROM upgrades is clear and it seems an upgrade to the 2.17 would be good for me, but I need to know *how* to flash and upgrade and haven't found any step-by-step's in this forum for those basic items. I have no problem finding the files, downlaoding the files from the FTP sites, etc- I just need to know what the difference between "flash" and "update" are - and how to execute those two tasks.
Thanks,
-Marc

Flash and update are used interchangeably. When you update, you are flashing a new ROM onto your device.
As far as step-by-step goes, I've posted several, but..
establish an activesync connection
CID unlock with aWizard
device reset
establish an activesync connection
run the ROM isntaller of choice

Sorry about that..I fixed the links
Does anyone have any screen shots of what the upgraded cingular rom looks like?
Does it have the looks and feel of the original rom?
Thanks

Unless you decide to use one of the added themes, then yep it looks exactly the same. As far as feel, well that's relative, but most folks report it feels a bit snappier. It retains the Cingular splash screen at startup.

Cingular GPRS/MMS Settings

So i was just poking around the FTP site looking for some things for my phone and i came accross this file here (cingular-ExtROM.zip). now im not very smart but if i understand this correctly, this is the customization that runs after you do a hard reset on your phone with shipped OS/ROM. If this is the case how can i piece this apart to find out which ones i need to just have the GPRS/MMS settings install via cab. That would make life alot easier lets say if i want to use WM6 or a non Cingular ROM.

The Cingular GPRS/MMS cab files are posted in more than one place on the forum already. You can save yourself some work by searching for them vs. trying to pull them out of the ExtROM file. The search function sucks but it will find those if you play around with it.
See thats my problem, I love you all and you are all a great deal of help. Thanks in advance since this may hurt someones feelings. Searching this forum, as awesome as it is, is more of a pain. Ive read most of the main posts trying to find the answer to my question, but it appears that some posts spiral off in other directions rather than that of which it was originally posted. People here are very nice and help alot, but it makes me confused when i cant find it and everyone says search the forums. LOL. I guess this is just me venting frustration at WM6 not having my settings already there LOL.

Search for the following two specifically:
P_Conn_CWS_APR12_Wizard.cab for GPRS
cingular_mms_964.cab for MMS
Both of these are included in posts and should be easy to find - unless (as I have seen folks write - really!!) you believe that "search" means "read".
If you flash WM6, you may also need ARCSoft too.
Custom-mms1-install-for-mms_733.cab - This CAB installs the MMS folder in Messaging
Cingular_mms_946.cab - This CAb installs MMS settings
P_Conn_CWS_APR12_Wizard.cab - This CAB installs your GPRS settings
Here's the catch: If you are trying to use these settings on WM6, you'll have to download the Arcsoft MMS cab to get it working. Sorry, but I dont have that one handy.

Best WM5 image for BA and where i can download it, Please

Greeings the best team on the web!
I am totally confused after all these number of ROMs for BA, I need anyone Kindly to tell me, what is the best ROM so far to install (Least number of bugs) and from where i can download it (Active link).
Appreciate your help

If you have a bit of time, xplode/tuaturas R6 sounds like its gonna be the most stable yet, but it isnt out yet. Dont know when it will be out, just when Tuatura gets some time.
In the mean time, I'd say most customisable and most important addins - xplode. Most up to date AKUs and stuff I think is Banzaneiok by the look of his post(cant spell it!), but havent tried it. I would go for xplode if you are just a normal user, and Banzaniodk if you are a crazy power user who needs the most up to date version of everything.
Now I have written this, please help me by copying it to the many more identical posts that will appear over the next few hours! Also, if you want to know whether WM5 is better than WM2003, just go to Wikipedia, find Windows Mobile page, and scroll down until you find WM5. From there you will find that there is a good analysis of the updates.
Ta,
Hardingt0110
Could we sticky this? It would be nice to have a "Which ROMs are recommended" topic that was kept up to date.
I am working on a WIKI topic - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM5_FAQ.
Please help me update it, or add your own opinions.
I wish I could add a poll of which is the best

Due to get a Vario3 - newbie- top 10 to-do's

Hi,
Not been here for a while. I had an old XDAII Himi and came here to flash the rom etc and use it as a TomTom / IGO.
My mate is about to upgrade his Kaiser for something better so I'm getting it cheapo. Its an MDA so I assume it will be locked to T-Mobile. So the first task will be to unlock it so I can put my orange sim in it.
So what I'm looking for in advance is like a hitlist of things I need to do to turn a std T-Mobile Vario3 into a nice jazzy up-to-date unit.
Please give me some pointers / recommendations.
Thx
this page has a link to a few wikis that have themselves have other links to very useful pages
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=377
but to save me wasting time on things are mediocre , I'd prefer a list of 'must haves'.
EG the most popular rom and applications
Once you've hardspl'd (etc) your phone look at some of Dutty's 6.1 roms, they are usually a gd start. HTCcuustomiser is a usefull bit of kit for changing some of the icons etc of the phone.
After that its just a matter of trawling the forums for .cab files that look usefull.
Im a fellow newb thou, so you'll have 2 look them up yourself, im still learning the ropes myself!
