Both Expansys and the swedish retailer dustin have the new dockingstation in stock. I have ordered one to be used as a computer replacement in my summer cottage. It has two usb ports and vga/video output.

I received it today
It comes with no extra charger, so you have to use your old one. It has 2 usb ports, 1 vga, 1 s-video and 1 composite port. Oddly enough it has 2 mini-usb ports. One for syncing and one for charging. I thought that it would be enough with the sync port as it charges as well.
It can be abit fiddly to get the Athena in place, but otherwise it works like a charm. Now I need to figure out how to change the keyboard layout (swedish) and follow up on the mouse pointer issue. After that is sorted out I have a simplistic PC for visually impare (the text is hughe on a 17" screen).

£69.95!!!!! What a rip-off. I know expansys are expensive but that is a joke (sorry). I think I will wait until they filter thru on to ebay.
I bought it from Dustin for SEK 1024 so I don't think it is a rip-off. They do not have a history of over charging. I suspect a device of this price class have expensive acessories. I am a bit disappointed that it doesnt come with a charger.

One seller used to have the have them on ebay at about the same time that expansys used to have them (although I think that they didn't have the second USB port). However, it looked to me like they were withdrawn because suddenly neither expansys nor this ebay seller had any in stock at the same time. Shouldn't be long before they appear on ebay. I seem to recall they were asking about £30 for it but I could be wrong.

can someone find one a bit cheaper? I'd like it for playing around testing external hard discs and accessories with but 70 quid is ridiculous for internet prices. Must be very few of them or something.......wonder who supplies Expansys as you don't seem to see their items on Ebay.
might require 2 chargers for extra battery
The docking station has two mini-usb ports. One for sync and one for charge. When I attach the charger to the charging port, nothing happens. My conclusion is, that the extra charging port is for the extra battery. This would mean that if you want to charge both the Advantage and an extra battery, you would have to attach an extra charger to it. If this is the case, it is even more odd that the docking station didn't come with a charger.
The only explanation I could find, would be that the mini-usb has a limited power capability and wouldn't be enough to charge both unit and battery.
//Johan

Try to insert only the battery in its slot and switch between the 2 mini USB ports then see what happens.
USB doesnt have enough amps to charge the Ameo as it is, if you look at the mains adapter its a 1 amp output, usb from pc im sure is only half of that at 500 milli amp. the second mini usb may be to attach a second mini usb to get the full charge, I have an external 2.5 HD and it comes with a usb to two mini usb to boost the current. even then it still strugles, without the external mains adapter, which is 1.4 amps.
I could be wrong, just my oppinion, But I notice this when im in the car using usb charger, it keeps everything runnning, "tomtom" but wont really charge it.

This has been discussed before - it depends on the car charger you are using. The one that came with my Brodit holder happily charges the Ameo while using satnav and screen brightness on full.
Bought it for 100 euros and I like it very much!!
It's standing right here on my desk and I use it everyday. Don't want to go without anymore!!
Hi,
I just stuck here, cause I found a thread about fast usb charging. But there is no answers or solutions.
I have many htc devices. It seems that some of them has a problem with 3rd party usb chargers.
My most used device is Universal. It suck a lot of power. THis one doesn't enable usb charging at all, until you put it in sleep mode before pluging the charger.
Anyway, the same issue for Kaiser too.
The problem is, that it doesn't matter how much current is the charger able to deliver. They just use some kind of recognition of original chargers.
What I already measured: Original charger and universal running => takes 1200mA. 3rd party charger or my 5A PSU => Universal/Kaiser sucks just 500mA.
This is fast/slow charge. I found here discussion about 4 and 5 pins shorted??
But WTF which 4 & 5 pin?
http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2006/09/10/htc_hermes_usb_connector_pin_config
According to this pinout. It would be 2 GND of Audio side? I'm not sure that original charger use extUSB audio side to charge...? It also could be D & A pins, but I'm afraid to connect 5V to Data- pin.
Anyway, someone here have to know it.
If not, in a few days I'll try all possible combinations and post the results.
Thanks
Shef
I'd also be interested to know about this. When I charge my TYTN II via USB, it takes much longer to charge than if I charge it via the mains charger (I prefer USB since I travel a lot and it's one less charger I need to carry around).
Better still, is it possible to buy a USB cable that will charge at the same rate as the mains charger rather than messing with a USB cable with the associated risks?
Best,
Gary.

a usb port only supplies 500ma, while the wall charger does 1200ma as the OP has measured (although it says 1A at the back of the charger). changing a cable is not gonna superpower up your usb port.
unless maybe you get hold of a forked USB cable, like the one that Seagate Free Agent drives come supplied with... you know, 1 mini USB splitting halfway down to two normal USB plugs.
Worth experimenting with, do you think?

good call.......with a little googling i came up with this
http://www.universaluk.com/acatalog...2_x_Type_A_to_mini_B__USB_2_0__1m__Lindy.html
tried ebay, my brief search came up with lots of unrelated results, so i gave up
I got one of those leads, came with my portable 2.5" hard drive. Just tried the lead on my Tytn 2 and it does charge almost as fast as the mains plug
Success
Ok, so, I tried to experiment.
Here you go.
Usb simple cable 480ma charge.
The same result with Motorola charger.
Motorola charger pins A and B short circuit - 890mA.
That's much better, althrough I suppose it can suck more current then 890mA, but it's significantly better.
THere is also pins data+ and data- short circuited (I don't know if it has effect, but I can't disconnect it in this connector).
Apparently NC (not connected) pin on our pinout schematics definitely is connected.
With % of charged battery it suck less and less current....I suppose it's usual, this should be even driven by ROM.
So, update your cables
It works even with car charger, so no more charger problems...
Shef
Just to be clear - you took a Motorola USB cable and shorted pins A and B (which are which by the way?) and it provides a decent current....
How do you short the pins? I've looked in the end of cable and I can hardly see the pins, let alone short them! What's the trick here or have I missed something?
Thanks,
Gary.

Also interested in how to short the pins. I use Navizon, bluetooth HSDPA tethering, and iGuidance while on the ambulance and even my iGo 3A max rated charger can barely keep up because the tilt wont accept all of the available current.
So have anyone found a way to fast charge our ppc through usb??
Yes, that is correct. Short pins 4 & 5 (4 is normally NC) to enable fast-charging. If you do it correctly, the phone shouldn't pick up tethering, and therefore should not say "PC Connected" or the like..
The TracyAndMatt pinout is wrongly numbered. The pin assignments are correct, but the number/letter scheme they used is incorrect. True ExtUSB pinout translation to their pinout is as follows:
T & M Real ExtUSB
-------------------------------
Pins E D C B A = 1 2 3 4 5
Pins 1 2 3 4 5 6 = 6 7 8 9 10 11
The way I remember is that the corner opposite the angled one is where pin 1 starts (where E is on the T&M pinout) - and they go like most IEC-standard connectors, in a clock-like circular numbering scheme.
Here's a better pinout: http://pinouts.ru/PDA/htc_extUSB_pinout.shtml
Hope this helps!

its the milliamps that is the problem even doubling up with a y splitter does not do much Find a charger with the most milliamps for a faster charge 1.2 amps works best and as far as i know no usb port puts out that much even if they are wired in a series. Many try to sell lower amp chargers they dont even know about it at att. if the screen is off they will charge but not well these phones are energy hogs. I must have at least twenty chargers and messed around with them... the original or one of highest amperage works for me.

There can be no recommended maximum mAh. There can only be a required current, which differs from device to device. Check Ohm's Law. The device determines how much current it draws. If the charger cannot deliver that current, then the charging process can fail in various ways, all undesirable.

samsung and some other 3rd party providers offer the data sync cable for 19.00 usd...that's the cheapest i've found..and none of the olympia, wa carriers have any accessories except the hard leather case, the silicone case and the screen protector.

You'll definitely need a real cable, and a charger capable of 2Amp output, or it probably won't charge properly.

That's because when you plug it into a computer, it negotiates for power with the usb controller. You can see how much power it is getting by looking in the device manager under the usb hub. Most devices can only get 500 mA from a computer usb port.
Sent from my galaxy tab
Its not a computer, its a external belkin 7-port usb-hub with a 3,8amp power-supply.
No computer is connected.
A hub shouldn't really supply power at all without a computer connected to it, it probably defaults to whatever the lowest power setting is. Just because a hub uses a 3.2A power cable doesn't mean every single usb port will have that, it's sharing that power with all of them.
No its not the hub, its the samsung charger thats wired differently.
I just modified a usb-extension cable and now the tab charges from my hub and my laptop.
The changes you need to make to the cable have already been described here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9355551
Also, you dont need 2A.
The samsung charger is charging with 1,5A only because it has 5,4V.
With 5V you will have only 1amp, so no need to buy a 2A charger/battery.
And yes it just jumped up 1% charging from my laptops's usb port while the tab was running.

Just to confirm, the DX cable both charges and syncs properly? I only ask as I had some bad experiences with ipod cables/docks from DX so I wanted to be sure before ordering.
If you need any other items why not go to the t-mobile store? Two items gets you 20% off, three items gets you 30%. They have lanyards for 5 bucks. Get with a friend and split the sale getting you the discounts.
Just got a Tab but I bought it off of someone who couldn't find there charger so I had to find one locally quick and the ONLY store that had it in my area was Verizon but it wasnt a Samsung branded OEM charger, It was a Verizon charger that was suppose to be the same but It doesnt charge via USB and Im wondering if for some reason its not suppose too? It charges USB when the Tab is off but when its on it doesn't? I can only charge it via wall charger when its on? So, is That normal? Or, does the OEM USB charge it while its on and this Verizon one is just messed up? Thanks.
Yeah. I got the Samsung Charger. Charging through USB from a computer is super slow to useless.
Only plugging to a wall provides sufficiently speedy charging.
The Tab is quite greedy for power and using either the USB port on a PC or a low Amp rated Mains USB charger will result in either the phone charging very slowly or not responding whilst under charge.
Charging the Tab using the USB and a PC, well there's nothing you can do about it as the USB standard only distributes 0.5 amps (500 milliamps) of power through each port.
Mains chargers however are rated higher but most common one's only have a Max of 1.0 amp.
What you need is a charger that has the capacity to deliver 2 amps.
Check Google & Ebay, there are a number of chargers available rated at 2 amp.
So usb charging while the tab is on is impossible, right? The charger charges fine plugged into the wall, I just needed to know if it not charging via usb while the tab is on was normal, and from what I get from what your saying is that it is normal, it will not charge usb while the tab is on... thanks.

No, I didn't say it was impossible. I said charging via the USB port on a PC will either be very slow or may not respond whilst under charge, it's certainly not the best method. It's just that with only 500 milliamps of power trickling through the USB port, the second you start to use the Tab in anything that requires a decent amount of power you are not going to get any charge.
The only way I find an ability to charge the Tab under a USB connection when connected to a PC is to let the screen on the Tab turn off and not to touch it. It will still happily communicate with your PC and send/receive data but it will take a much, much longer time to charge that's all.
I gotcha, so...when my tab is on it says not charging in the status but if I let it sleep it actually will just very slow... I understand what your saying and thank u for your time, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the usb cable I got to know to take it back or not...

I charge mine at night via USB to my computer. Starts around 20% by the time I plug it in. I don't power off the tab. Always has a full charge in the am.
I have a double usb cable that is used to power an external drive. I would need a female to female adapter, but this should provide more power to the GT.

Yes, providing the cable you have charges when using with a mains plug then yes, the cable is good.
If however the cable did not charge even when using it with a mains plug then definately you would have a sync only cable.

There must be a different issue here

the htc cable appears to be slightly thicker, which should give them room for the twisting.
I've find out that the problem only happends when I connect the cable to the monitor (external Dell monitor) and does not happend when I plug the cable directly to the desktop (the front USB port).
I must add the Samsung OEM cable is 95 cm and the "HTC" is 174 cm.
So I think is a matter of noise and cable length.
