Wizard fxn as dialup modem for itself? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

GPRS / EDGE in Canada is just way to expensive, does anyone know if it is possible to have the wizard call a dialup isp and acquire an internet connection for itself (not my laptop) that way?

How do I set WLAN as the default connection.

I am a new user and am trying to get my XDAIIi to start up and use WLAN rather than GPRS for the internet and MSN massanger. Does anyone now how to do this?
Many thanks.
As far as im aware the XDA IIi will use Wlan if it is enabled.
It usually goes Wlan ... if no wlan then use GPRS ... if no GPRS use WAP.

AT&T Settings for EDGE, 3G

I have been lusting after a Windows Mobile device for around two years, just waiting until the perfect phone came along. Finally the Kaiser is here, minus the VGA display, but seemingly everything else I could ever want. I would prefer to buy the unlocked version, but I have a serious reservation. While I waited for the Kaiser, I bought an unlocked Nokia 6131, but I had no luck making certain features (mobile web, sending pics to email) work on Cingular/AT&T wireless. I would be rather pissed if I bought a $800 BRICK!
My question: I know many of you are using the Kaiser on AT&T here in the USA. Is there a definitive source for the settings needed to use the EDGE and 3G networks? Could someone please post the link or the settings here? One thread I read indicated that the Kaiser automatically connects to these networks--is that true?
There are a lot of inexperienced people out there posting rubbish answers to questions like this. I'm a noob and I wouldn't presume to give advice to someone unless I knew what I was talking about. I'm hoping this thread will be useful to anyone considering an unlocked Kaiser, so please keep the misinformation to a minimum.
Thanks!
I'm using Kaiser in California on AT&T. I have 3G at my house, and there were no settings that were required for the phone to work. I put in the sim and it took off running. I've sent pics, text, slingbox streaming video, email, no issues at all.
I did load a different comm manager with a "3G" button to hold off 3G to save battery and give me control as to when I need a fast connection.
I use it in NYC on AT-T/Cingular and have no issues I use the wap.cingular settings for data and MMS since I hate MediaNet. But it works great and have 1.2MB download speeds every time I test.
Thanks for the quick replys. I was under the impression that the Kaiser came with the ability to turn off the 3G when you are out of range, is that not the case? Also, what are the wap.cingular settings that you are referring to? Did you have to input them before the phone worked? (I'm sorry for my ignorance!)
If you buy an unlocked TyTN II, it comes with a configuration app for most carriers including AT&T/Cingular. So, it works essentially out of the box with the 3G/Edge and of course phone network.
But even so, if you need to manually config it, here are the entries. Note, there are 2 different network APNs for AT&T depending on what plan you have. If you have a MediaMax, MediaNET, or Smartphone pdata plan, then use the first. If you have a PDA plan, then use the second set.

As I mentioned, I'm doing fine with the initial startup when I installed my sim card. However, I do have a PDA plan so I did add MyISP with ISP.CINGULAR to connect to the internet.
I still see the unit connect via MediaNet for certain applications but can't find where that config is located as I only have one defined connection labeled AT&T GPRS with the ISP.CINGULAR access point.
Does anyone have an idea as to why that would be?
I'm with AT&T in CA and am using the iPhone plan. The auto config sets the data connection to ISP.CINGULAR. You'll need to change it to WAP to get connected properly for Gmail and Internet. ISP works but only for the Internet. For some reason it fails for email, Gmail POP3 email anyway.
My connection switches automatically between EDGE, GPRS and HSDPA.

It's hidden. Mine does the same, even tho both the visible "My ISP" and hiddne "Media NET" connect to the same place. It might be viewable in the registry...
Under Start - Settings - Connection Tab - Connections, checkout Edit Work settings...that's where I found Medianet settings.
Does Blackberry Connect fall under a PDA plan? Basically, should I use the ISP.Cingular?

Found it Thanks! I went to the connections tab, didn't see MediaNet. It turns out that it was a pull-down choice for both Internet and Work fields. I just pulled down MediaNet for work, then went into Edit, tapped and held to delete the MediaNet entry. Now it's gone from the pull downs.
When I was speed testing the Internet Sharing with my Laptop, I found that when using speedtest.net that the wap.cingular connection shows it's origin on the USA Map in SpeedTest as Florida (I'm in Calif). When I ran Speedtest using isp.cingular, the location origin was Los Angeles and it tested faster for me.

Thats Bizzare... For me, I am on the PDA connect plan and I am forced to use wep.cingular, because, I can't connect to ISP.Cingular... When I asked ATT about this, she said, "We are migrating all users regardless of whether they are on the PDA or Media net to the wep.cingular access point... I had a notion she was full of it, but now I know she is full of it...
With the pda plan I shouldnt have any problem connecting to isp.cingular, correct?

Did you have to give them the IMEI #?
I just got off the phone with a supervisor from ATT telling them that I want to know why I can't access ISP.CINGULAR ap and only the WEP.CINGULAR.
Their answer was because they don't know my IMEI number and that if I gave that to them then it would work... I told them thats Customer support BS and that I can't find my IMEI number. I also told em that if my phone is capable of connecting to the wep.cingular ap that there is no reason I wouldn't be able to connect to the isp.cingular ap unless I wasn't provisioned for the PDA plan and just provisioned for the media net plan, even though I am paying the extra 20 dollars for the PDA plan...
I can't stand ATT, I am with them only to get 3g in Los Angeles.. As soon as another company matches what att has to offer I'm leaving att...
Anyone have any ideas and advice about this?

RemE, did you purchase your old 8525 from cingular? If so, then they obviously have your 8525 imei#. Did you ever tell them you upgraded from the 8525 to the Kaiser? If not.. then they probably think your still on the 8525. If so, then the 8525 is a pda which the kaiser is as well, which means that maybe they won't provision you for the pda plan unless they know your using a pda.
Just a thought.
JB
No, I set up the account initially with a Razr on Cingular, migrated to a 8525 and expanded to unlimited data. I was using wap.cingular all that time, didn't know about isp.cingular. I had noticed the origin as Florida when speed testing the connection.
When I got the Kaiser, popped the SIM in and it auto created the MediaNet connection. In reading this forum I found the isp.cingular and gave it a try and found that it shows origin in LA, so I went that route and now have deleted MediaNet. I haven't had any contact with AT&T about any of this.
Edit; they have my 8525 imei on file as my current phone.

I didn't try it with the AT&T ROM but with HTC ROM, it will ask if you want to configure the data settings for Tmobile as soon as it detects the Tmobile SIM card.
thanks, but i'm using the atnt rom for right now, so if anybody has those settings i'd appreciate it, thanks
omar
i also have my tilt unlocked and when i put in a tmobiel sim it does ask if i want to reconfigure ....but of course thats for htc rom....so i would advise to flash if you can not find a way to use your tzone
so are you using the 5.99 plan with htc rom?
i also have a Unlocked Tilt on T-Mobile any way to get data to work with out a ROM MOD

Help setting up home proxy to use as WAP on my Kaiser

Can anyone point me to a guide to setting up a proxy server on my windows machine at home so that I can use that on my Tilt for free (relatively) internet?
Ive scowered forums, cant find a solid solution. Can you anyone help?
can anyone help?
How exactly would it be "free" internet? You are still going to need a data connection to access the proxy server.
it would be free because I would not be paying internet charges through my cellular provider using their wap server to access the internet, rather I would bundle the cost into my already home internet charges if I set up a home proxy and pointed my phone there.
It still would register as me making a call, but it would not register as me using the internet, hence 'free' internet.
Well technically that's what Opera Mini does. They have their "proxy" servers to feed you web pages. Guess what? AT&T doesn't care. Either way it's still data and I get charged for it (although I do have an unlimited data plan so that point is moot). They don't differentiate between web and any other kind of data access. It's all data and what you're proposing won't change the fact that you need a data plan to do it and will get charged for it.

if you redirect your proxy outside of AT&Ts MediaNET you will not get charged
OK, apparently you didn't read anything I typed. Let's look at it another way.
I have a Tilt. I can enable or disable AT&T's proxy server. Does it really matter? NO. Why? Because in both cases data is being transmitted over EDGE or HSDPA. It's bits and bytes traveling over the airwaves. Whether you are directly connected to the internet, using AT&T's proxy or your own proxy, it's all 1's and 0's to them. If they see those 1's and 0's being transmitted from your phone to the internet, you are getting charged for it.
If it was that easy to bypass AT&T's data plan, wouldn't you think everyone would be doing it? I know I would.
Prove me wrong.
In short: As long as you phone has to send a signal to the cellular towers that AT&T owns and operates, you will be charged data access. The Kaiser has built-in wi-fi, you can get around [most] of the associated issues with WAP by using that when you're at home; however, some programs require a WAP connection as opposed to a standard wi-fi connection, which would require you to send data over the air to AT&T's towers. It doesn't matter where the proxy itself is located, so long as you have to send data to the cellular towers, you're SOL.

Good explanation
You need to turn off or disable the GPRS connection if you want to use WiFi without paying AT&T connection charges. There used to be a great program over at MoDaCo called NoData which when you ran it showed you the connections you had and let you disable the ones you wanted to have off. Then you could use Wifi without starting a GPRS connection. The program still exists, do a search for it hear or google it at MoDaCo. Only thing, I seem to recall that the creator of the program said it was only for WM5. I've seen people say that it works in WM6 but haven't tried it myself.
Short of that you could just go into DataComm and tap on the Data connection icon, to turn if off as you tap WLan to turn it on. Of course that will disable your data connection and push e-mail and you'll have to remember to start it up again afterwards if you want to get your push e-mail.

Did you happen to be a Verizon customer before you moved to ATT? Verizon tracks data usage through their proxy, so yes, you COULD get free internet with them. I did it all the time, and i miss it. ATT is a bit smarter about it. Instead of forcing you to pay for an unlimited plan or nothing... ATT lets you get on the internet whenever you want... they just charge you for it.
In short, AFAIK, there is no way to get free internet through ATTs network like i used to with verizon.
I had a similar question, which got no replies....
T-mobile puts you through it's proxies, so that pictures etc are compressed, which is a bit pants. That's one reason why you might want to do as described in the OP.

This simply isn't true. If you enable WiFi and you're passing traffic through GPRS, then you don't have your WiFi network configured correctly.
Go to Settings-Connections-WiFi and change the pull down for your adapter from "Work" to "The Internet. Associate with AP. Surf to your heart's content without using the cellular network.
You can shut off the phone connection if you like, but there's no need to do so.
Edit: Just for giggles, I fired up my WiFi configured as above and grabbed a 3MB file directly on the phone. GPRS Monitor recorded zero traffic increase.

Internet Sharing - Bad Connectivity

I’m here on the coast at Keesler Air Force base. There is no internet to speak of and I do not want to spend roughly $1,400 to obtain it through a Cell provider for my laptop. I setup the Internet Sharing on my TILT and it works somewhat. Well, I lied. It stays “connected” however the damn thing peers off and the laptop continuously loses connectivity.
I only use Skype and sometimes webmail with the Internet Sharing and it cannot handle it. Every minute, sometimes up to six minutes, Skype videocalls and standard webcalls are dropped and I test the internet connection to see that it’s timing out for another minute or so and then it magically reappears.
I closed all applications and the antivirus crap to ensure that there was no extra throughput bandwidth. Anyway, I’m about to lose my damn mind here because I cannot stay in contact with my fiancée who’s on the other side of the globe right now.
According to the phone I’m only getting the Edge network and that makes sense as there are not 3G towers nearby. The signal continually shifts from two bars to four bars. I have used the Kraiser Tweak to enable HDSPA but that service is not being picked up.
Any ideas as to how I can keep the connectivity from dropping between the cellphone and the laptop? I assume that’s the issue as the phone stays “Status: connected” within the Internet Sharing application.
If it matters, I can only use the "Media Net" option under Network Connections. Media Net utilizes the wap.cingular access point.
I have tried to use the "ATT ISP GPRS" option but it continually loops through attempts to connect to the internet. Eventually it gives up without any success. The ATT ISP GPRS uses the isp.cingular access point.
Please any assistance would be most appreciated. This United States Airman is about to lose is frigging mind over the fact that he can’t communicate with anyone any longer. Ugh!!!
Thanks to any thoughts and advice to better my situation...
Oh and for the record, if it isn't understood being a Tilt, my provider is ATT.
HSDPA will not work without 3G service. MEdia Net is the best way to tether, I use it all the time. Make sure the proxy option is unchecked, or you will get very poor speeds and high latency.
What do you mean by HSDPA? Also, I tried with MEDIANET but I continually lost connectivity. However, ATT ISP GPRS seems just as bad if not worse. Any thoughts on something I can do to boost connectivity? I don't know about the proxy but where I looked one is NOT enabled.
I enabled IP Compression and Software Compression for ATT ISP GPRS and it hasn't seem to have any affect...
Thanks a lot.

You mentioned HSDPA, so that's why I said it. As for ATT ISP GPRS, you do not want to use that unless you have a modem tethering option on your AT&T account. If you go under MEdia Net settings, and then check the Proxy tab, make sure the proxy option is unchecked.
Allrighty, I've confirmed that the Proxy is not enabled. The only thing on the Proxy option section that is enabled is the first option where it says this network connects to the internet.
Any ideas on stabilizing internet on a 2 - 3 bar Edge network? If I do more than one task (more than one website OR a website and Skype) the internet gets lost quite easily...
Thanks a lot man.
Wow when I was over that way I dont recall have any issues with ATT and internet. When I access the net while tethered I use the ATT program that connects via laptop... Its not the internet sharing program.... Its called ATT Communication Manager... It may read as being tethered so if you dont have tethering on your plan then I dont know if id use it. If you have tethering it works great for me. Heres a link for the download...
http://www.wireless.att.com/businesssupport/setupOTW.do?phone=ATTTilt
You might want to try flashing another rom and radio. I remember I had an issue similar to this with my hermes from ATT. Swapping to another radio can definitely boost your signal quality. If your signal drops too low even for a second, it can cause major latency issues on the edge network( which WILL cause skype to dop a call ) . I recommend trying a ROM that already has a radio packaged in with it to save you the trouble of having to match a radio to a rom. Also look for one that has the network configuration cab built in so it can automatically set up your Connection settings for you.
Hope this helps
Allrighty... I don't have much time to research ROMS or RADIOS unfortunately. Any suggestions on where to find them, or what I might use? I'd almost prefer just to change RADIOS so long as I can find the original RADIO to replace any changes back to what I was using...
Currently, I have:
ROM 1.62.502.0
RADIO 1.27.14.09
Any help to further this US Airman along would be appreciated.
Thanks.
