Newromupdateutility_wizard crashing... - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Hello -
When using newromupdateutility_wizard_noid to install any ROM I get a Windows GPF and haven't been able to get around it. When I install one of the other ROM's that are compiled into an exe file they work fine.
Is there any way for me to install the ROM from the storage card without involving Windows? Anybody know if I can convert the ROM files into an installable exe format?
Thanks
Edit/Delete Message

Anybody? Didn't there used to be a way to flash rom from a storage card???
Thanks

"When I install one of the other ROM's that are compiled into an exe file they work fine." That's actually using the ROM Update Utility behind your back. Try this -- Start, Run, type %temp% and hit enter. Note that an explorer window comes up. Now run one of the ROMs compiled into an exe file -- don't do anything with it just run it and watch that explorer window. You'll see a new subdirectory get created. Copy that new directory to your desktop or wherever and quit the ROM update utility. Inside you'll find all the files you normally do in a ZIP or RAR ROM update including a new ROM Update Utility that you can TRY to use.

N00B Question ... but not covered, even in the Tilt FAQ

Can someone please answer the most basic of N00B questions ...
1) How do I install .EXE files onto the Tilt
2) How do I install .CAB files onto the Tilt
Specifically, with # 1, I am trying to install KaiserTweak, but it does not run under Windows XP and there is no info on how to get it onto the phone and how to install it (it has an XML too).
Thanks!
copy them over to your kaiser. run them by clicking on them using file explorer
Ummm ... N00bier
Thanks, but HOW?
I have activesync running, and it is doing a bang up job. I cannot figure out how to get the EXE and XML over onto the phone.
Also, how would a CAB work, same way?
OMG!
cab - copy to phone and run through file explorer
exe - run through pc/ or run directly from the device
to copy files over to your PPC...
click the explore button on your activesync app running on your desktop from there you can drag and drop the files anywhere
I drag and drop .cabs to my storage card, I have a cab folder with two folders inside one is device and one is card. It is an easy backup and reminds me of where i installed that particular cab. Now, if you have an .exe or .msi you can run that from your desktop and as long as you are synced the install wizard will install the app to your phone giving you the option to install it on the device or the card.
Now, some applications are meant to be ran from your phone, such as mplayer or Kaiser Tweaks. You copy the file over to your device and click the .exe when you want to run the program.
Hope this helps!

Extract the zip in this folder into \Windows on your device, and Run QuickMenu.exe (If you want the English version).

thanx
yesssssss!!! thanks a lot man, it looks like it's working much appreciated.
Heres the cab file to make things easier if you need to install it again.
Related question: installing the cab (or unzipping the files and running the exe) doesnt seem to replace the standard start menu. any idea why? i can see the quickmenu.exe and quickmenu.lnk files in \windows, but i can only get quickmenu to pop up by running them.
thanks!

How to install Apps...

I have just bought a HTC Diamond. I am new to the world of Windows Mobile.
So far the phone is great! I love it.
I have noticed you can download lots of apps and tweaks.
I want just wondering how to instal these programs on the phone.
I have downloaded a few games, Unzipped and copied over the files to the phone. It recognioses one of the games with a '.cab' format and it installed, but the rest are .xml.
Any pointers, tips and hints for this phone?
Cheers
the program you use to extract compressed files identifies cab files as compressed. All you need to do is copy the cab files to your phone and run the file from there. If you try to extract a cab file, you'll get those xml files you talked about.
1. Copy cab to phone
2. Run cab from phone to install the program
good luck

Hi - my first post!
You mention .cab files... I expect this applies to .exe's as well (for example, hot fixes)???
Any particular folder(s) on the phone we should be copying these files to before running them? I tried to install a hot fix today, but after running the .exe and receiving a 'success' message, the phone restarts OK, but the fix does not appear to have worked.
all exe install's for pocketpc's are pc exe files which have to be run
on the pc and then it use activesync to transfer the cab file to the
pocketpc and run it there

Thanks for the response.
Unfortunately, running the exe on my PC (Win Vista) doesn't seem to work.
Error: "{C:\filepath\filename.exe} is not a valid Win32 application."
Any ideas? I'm a complete newb at this so have exhausted my very limited list of possible ideas...
some people don't distribute their apps with installers so it could
just be the program itself
in which case you have to execute it on the pocketpc
this of cause mean that it will not put a shortcut to the exe
in your programs thats just something you have
to do manualy with a program like total commander
which you can also use to browse to where you put the
exe file and execute it to start the program

OK thanks - I already tried running the exe straight from my Diamond, and although it appeared to work correctly, the hotfix didn't actually fix what it claimed to. Not to worry, I'm still learning all this stuff (only had my Diamond for a day and a half now... ).

how to extract cabs from NBH file

im trying to extract some cabs from a NHB file...can anyone guide me in the direction on how to do this
I'd say the best way to do that is to extract the ROM into regular files.
You need to download a bunch of EXE files: NBHextract.exe, NBSplit.exe, ImgfsToDump.exe, and ImgfsFromNB.exe
You need to extract the NBH with NBHextract.exe. This will yield a .nb file
You need to use NBSplit (use the "-kaiser" parameter) to split the .nb into a .nb.payload file and a .nb.extra file
You then need to use ImgfsFromNB on the .nb.payload file, which will create a file called imgfs.bin
Use ImgfsToDump on imgfs.bin, which will create a folder called "Dump". When it finishes, All of the ROM's files will be there. You will probably want to search the folder for .cab files, since there are thousands of files in the average ROM dump.
That should do the job for you.
Or just use Visual Kitchen to Dump the ROM, and then rebuild the OEMs to CABs.
Dave
could u walk me through the visual kitchen program?
Hmmm look for htcRIE_0.4.0.47 and extract what you want.
im trying to extrct the streaming media player cab...the one thats in most of the 6.5 roms that has a look a like HTC ablum look to it, but i cant find a cab using "htcRIE_0.4.0.47"
little help will might ...
You do not search for it at you WM ROM,
Search at the site...
Anyway i have been find it for you !
A newer version of htcRIE, enjoy!

With Visual Kitchen, just click on the Dump button at the bottom - and then browse to the NBH file .
Dave
i guess all nbh files dont have cabs because in the dump folder it creates...its only a couple of cabs and whole lot of systems files

Yeah, you have to rebuild the EXT packages to CAB's I don't know if there is a tool for that actually. Might be better dumping it the Dave (TyTNII) way, that will give you OEM's. There are tools for OEM 2 CAB.
Jason8 is working on a tool to convert all 3 all ways IIRC.
Dave
the nbh extract file launches for a quick second...it doesnt stay on the screen, as well as a lot of other files such as nbh split....do i need to update something in order to have these programs run properly?

You have to run them from the windows command line (CMD.exe). If you really want me to, I'll upload a batch file I made which automates most of this. You just put the NBH and tools in certain folders and run the batch file and it does the rest.

that would be so helpful
Alright, I fixed all the bugs in it (it was still in progress) and added some new features I had meant to add for a while, such as renaming the processed files by date processed (though you probably won't need them if you're only extracting one ROM). Hit [WINDOWS KEY] and R on your keyboard at the same time to open the Windows Run dialog, and type "%USERPROFILE%" without the quotes. Simply unzip the file and drag the folder called "Flashing" in the user folder (it's vital to have the Flashing folder in the correct spot. Otherwise, the entire script will fail). Place the NBH file you want to extract in the NBHDUMP folder (in the Rhodium folder, which is in the Flashing folder), and go to the IMGFS folder (in the Rhodium folder, which is in the Flashing folder). Now, run RhodiumRomDump.bat and the dump should commence, and a folder with your dump should appear in the same directory.
If anything should go wrong, please tell me so I can try to fix it.
EDIT: Please redownload, all issues I could find are fixed in this version. If you get errors about needing MSVCr71.DLL with this version, google is your friend.
maybe im not doing something right, ive been at it for days now...i put the "flashing folder" in C:\Documents and Settings\Sean (sean's my name..haha), put the nbh file in the NBH folder, ran "DumpRhodiumRom", i got 2 folders named "and" and "Setings"....when i run "dumpRhodiumRom", its just stays on the screen for half a second
ive extracted the rom before using visual kitchen...im trying to get some of the programs into cabs...the problem is that in the dump file, i see the programs i want, but they arent in cabs, so i cant just take its "exe" file and put it into another phone (well at least that didnt work for me)

That's odd. Can you tell me two things?
Where do these folders ("Settings" and "And") show up?
Hit [Windows Key] + R and type "CMD" (without quotes), then hit okay, then type "cd %USERPROFILE%\Flashing\Rhodium\IMGFS" (without quotes). Now, type "DumpRhodiumRom" (without quotes), and tell me exactly what is says (you don't actually have to include all the formatting and everything). Also, if you could tell me what color it's in, that would help.
I'm going to test it in a virtual Windows XP environment and see if it's compatiblity with XP that's the problem.
EDIT: So the problem seems to be the fact that it doesn't like the spaces in the folder name "Documents and Settings", hence the creation of the "and" and "settings" folders. Unfortunately, it's an important folder, so renaming isn't really possible. However, I think I know a simple fix to the original script, so I'll test that and post it shortly.

Try downloading cabtools V 0.3 and use pkg2cab to build the package back into a .cab file. I've never done it myself, but this looks like what you want.

Standalone apk installer with adb

I made a little file where u can drag'n'drop files u want to install on ur phone.
No need of any settings.
When your phone is allready "adb ready" you dont need to have anything running.
Just take the apk File and drag on the exe and it will install. thats all.
perhaps i'll add more features soon. i made it for myself, to install the apk's faster after a full-wipe i made.
In Windows7 and Vista, it needs Admin rights (so it asks when starting) and AFTER its done, it gives an error. But it works how it should!
so don't worry
PS: Doubleclicking it won't do anything! Its Drag'n'Drop only!!
Another one by me
copy and paste the following into a file and save it on your desktop as install.bat (or whatever you fancy)
@echo off
adb install %1
pause
Then drag and drop files onto it, or associate apk files with install.bat and double click an apk file and will install to your phone.

What do u want to say with ur post?
Did i made any question? i think not, so what r u explaining and for WHO??
It's just what i made in my "tool".
Made little bigger better Tool with 5 Options now
if anyone wants it, its at the bottom.
Now u can install apks, uninstall non-stock apks, push and pull files to & from /system/app/ and reboot ur phone.
ahhh, and not it wont make any errors or need for "admin rights" when starting the tool.
Works like a charm and now it has an Sketched android in it ! Yeehaaa
your program (the install part) doesnt really work. it doesnt install. i found that making the batch file was better.
hmm ok, thats weird. for me the new tool works perfekt.
And it IS a batchfile, i just merged the needed files from adb and the .bat file to one exe file. thats all.
do u get any error when trying to install ?
You do drag and drop the file to the exe and choose install apk, right?
Geeze, are people these days so lazy that they can't move their hand off the mouse? Just type the command!!!! Its easy... "adb install {file.apk}".
You know, back in the dark ages of not very long ago, NOBODY had a mouse. Or drag and drop. EVERYTHING was on the keyboard and involved typing commands.
If you guys want and you are running Windows, check out our app. www.androidmanager.net ... we added feature for installing apk-s by double-clicking few days ago
