Suggested ROM Upgrade for MDA Vario?

Hi there,
I have a T-Mobile MDA Vario and I'm interested in upgrading the ROM in it. These are the details displayed on the flash screen when i turn it on:
IPL: 1.06
SPL: 1.06
GSM: 01.12.10
OS: 1.6.2.4
From what I've read, I can assume this is a G3 model (which makes my life easier)
Can people tell me what is the most recent upgrade I can install? I don't care if the ROM is not T-Mobile.

Yes you do have a G3 which like you said will make your life easier. The first thing you need to do is spend some time reading. Only after becoming totally familiar with the process should you flash your phone.

Thanks for confirming that I have a G3 rkwyte2 - from what I've read, there seem to be a lot more roms out there for that revision of the software. I'm not going to go doing anything to my phone too quickly - I can see from other threads that you can seriously mess things up if I don't go about this job properly.
I'm tempted to upgrade to the latest Qtek flash - that way I'm independent of the various carriers out there. Does this sound like a good idea? Do people rate one flash over another? If so, what do people recommend?

I think everyone has their personal favorite. I have used many different ROMs and they all have good and not so good points. I really like Molski's latest 2.6 ROM it is very nice and would most likely fit what you want. The thread is quite long for that one but the first page has most everything you need as far as info goes.

I checked out Molski's website and his ROM looks interesting. Would you say that the offical ROMs are more/less stable than homebrew ROMs?

That is hard to say really. I can't tell the difference between them except that the custom ROMs usually have extras built into them.

looking at your ipl & spl you should be in real trouble!!! I suggest reading up on "CID Unlocking" before you brick your phone

1.01 IPL - ****om Qtek (beer) ROM
2.17 SPL - Qtek ROM
2.25.11 GSM - Cingular/T-mobile Radio
2.26.10.2 OS - the newest OS by T-Mobile..

If you have question like that, then you should more specific it

Well it works fine.it was a beta from early on.
But the reason I ask the question is that they roms start to be developed in beta, then they carry on the beta testing but password protect it for testers only.
Trouble is a final release doesnt seem to appear.

I second this! If you don't understand why, then you have absolutely NO business asking about custom ROMs.
If you continue, you WILL brick your device PERMANENTLY!
If you don't take the time to understand this, then expect no help from those of us who do!

Anyway no point in arguing I have reflashed my device even thou it was working ok and now its at all to date.

It was just a friendly warning.
As for your original question, ROM cookers will always be cooking ROMs. There may be "Official" carrier released ROMs, and active development of particular ROMs may cease as their makers move on to other projects.
So, simply stated, if you find a ROM that meets all of your needs, it is your "Finished" ROM, and you can stick with it and be happy. Otherwise, your answer is no.
I hope that clarified things for you.

If you follow the directions here on cid unlocking(I followed the link in faria's sig), when you use the suggested downgrade rom thats the ipl/spl you get, then if you flash a rom without the bootloader(ie faria 3.2 & others) this is the ipl you will have when finished, I used the xelencin2.26 rom to get my ipl/spl #'s back up.You could use the latest OEM rom also.
I dont understand why all these custom roms, have the bootloader in them, f-ing around flashing the bootloader is the fastest way to brick your device I can think of, the BL is what will save your sorry ass when you get sketchy and pull the plug at the 96% 20min wait, or screw up your flash in some other way, tho I think there is still a way to get a new bootloader flash on it, like a bootloader for the bootloader but Im not sure.
If the 1.01 ipl is not necessary for the cid unlock to work, somebody could just add the 2.26 to the "beer" downgrade rom.
Ive seen a few people jumping all over noobs who just followed the instructions to a "t", the downgrade howto should highlight this prob and suggest a fix.
I also would love to see a "final" from faria but he seemed pretty discouraged with the response to rc1 and doesn't want the headaches of a public release, I hope he does release, I love his rom and it took me from like 20 apps to install after a hard reset to about 6-8, It is by far the best rom for the wiz Ive seen so far...

just release it and dont sweat the support so much, Im involved with the "sat testing" community and ALL public releases are totally "at your own risk", If you know the rom is stable then anybody who bricks a phone did something wrong, but I know it is hard not to take things personally, when you give away something that you worked on and are proud of you feel a need to defend it. thanks if rc1 is as far as it goes PUBLICLY, you showed us all how great a rom could be, hope to see 3.0.0.0 FINAL soon...

That's why I included THIS LINK in my previous post.
I learned alot by reading Faria's excellent tutorial, but Dr P laid it out even more clearly, and added a step or two that seem both simple and prudent.
I'm not knocking Faria's tutorial, and I'm not suggesting Dr P knows more. In fact, I feel that BOTH Tutorials should be required reading (all the way through) before anyone attempts to unlock their device.

Anyone that was (or is) able to maintain a "C" average in High School should have absolutely NO problems following Faria's guide. I simply took Faria's method and repackaged the documentation to add the "Safe for Toddlers" stamp, that's all.
@bhang - if the 1.05 had a 2.x IPL or SPL it wouldn't work as you can't unlock a AKU 2.3 ROM with lokiwiz .2b. Plus it's the onl;y way to downgrade a ROM back to a 1.x if one needs to send back to their provider for warranty repair.

I figured there must be a reason, But alot of folks have had the problem, the how to should have the step added to get the ipl back up to a 2.x after.
This place is great, I hope faria will continue, along with everyone else to contribute as its the whole community that makes it great, and we were all noobs with few manners once(to some extent)...

what is rom

Ok I’m a total noob and ‘ve have already unlock my T-Mobile MDA so I can use it as a Cingular cell phone . about I know I got a G3 since my
IPL is 2.xx
Spl is 2.xx
Gsm 2.35.11
os 2.26.10.
Now my Question is what’s next? What’s that rom I’ve been reading about? howe do i know what version i have ? What is the os 2.26.10? What version should I be using? how do I REMOVE THE T-Mobile logo an stuff? I know it’s a lot of question but I figured that every one can jump in and give me some knowledge than you very much .for reading this.

ROM = firmware = Windows mobile
OS 2.26.10.2 = newest oficial firmware
Radio 2.35.11 - I think it does not exist
IPL/SPL = bootloader (it depend on the end of that number) if you have G4 (IPL/SPL ends 0001), than you can`t unlock and write unoficial (better then oficial) ROM
T-Mobile logo is easy to rewrite by any unoficial ROM or by your cooked splash screen

for simplicity...think of a ROM as the operating system and the extended ROM as the bundled software your computer comes with...
you can flash your phone with any wizard ROM you'd like...and as a noob you may not know that most ROM's are cooked without network customizations so you'll need (in your case cingular) the cingular customizations cab file (do a search)
like johnny said...most custom ROM's have all the tmobile/cingular/etc bull**** removed so you won't have to worry about it
the os 2.26.10.x is the version number of a ROM (newest official as of right now)
know this...you will void your warrenty when you unlock your phone further which you'll have to do...so first go here:

I notice that you want to upgrade/downgrade ROMs. Be aware that there are two types of devices, G3 & G4 and you should be aware of what type of phone it is. If when you boot your phone & the IPL & SPL read 2.xx then you have a G3 phone if it reads 2.xx.001 or something like that then you have a G4. Be aware that if you use the wrong type of ROM to flash you will brick your phone - read; read; read; before you start flashing your ROM.

And Btw, I believe ROM stands for "Read Only Memory" which is where you write the OS and then the applications only read from this place. It is pretty much similar to the ROM on your PC.

... and WWE = "World Wide English", the language of the ROM. FRE might be for French for example. The World Wide part means that the version is applicable accross all English Locales, as opposed to having localised English versions for Australia, the US, and the UK for example.

Yeah man thanks for the warnings I believe that my is a g3 because is 2.26 and my spl is 2.26 with out the extension. I'm currently doing my readings carefully before i do anythings major.

I am using Dopod838 and my phone warrenty is void.
I am thinking to upgrade the ROM since my original rom does not support A2DP.
Since my phone is unlock, whereby I can use any provider sim card and use it in my phone, do I still need to unlock my rom?

I got one las question i confirmed that my wizard is a g3 according to the ultimate guide I should downgrade if i want to run home brew rom which is what i wanr to do . I've already downloaded the button rom 1.o5 along with lockwiz o.2b my question is do I cid unlock first or do I downgrade with button 1.o5 than cidunlock second I could of swear I was suppose to cid unlock first.Please help.

5th Sticky has the information you need, its title is:
SOLUTION FOUND -CID/sim UNLOCKING FOR WIZARD WITH AKU2 ROMS.
Gives you a step by step process. Basically you can't CID unlock until you downgrade to the button rom. By your post it looks like you have the tools you need. This thread will give you the instructions on how to use them and when.

Ok I followed all the steps on the guide buy using button's 1.05 ROM and wait specially when it reaches 98% Than I used lokiwiz - HTC Wizard Unlocker UPDATE Version 0.2b and finally I used button's 1.05 ROM again to get my SPL down to 1.01. I got my phone both Sim Unlock & Cidunlock I guess I’m ready for the world. Yet still have more questions .

Yes I m .. hehe! I hv lots to read.. I still got to read through all the sticky note so that I can load a new ROM to my dopod 838.
I'll probe u when I bump into problem.. hehe!

Some of the best ROMs are introduced (and downloadable) via this forum. So you can check out yourself what they include and if it fits your needs.
The latest ROMs are based on AKU 3.2/3.5, but they are still in development and can be a bit buggy.
Personally I am very satisfied using the Molski.biz 2.26.10.2 Final Edition Rom (based on AKU2.3).

Qood question I'm not sure being that I', noob but i would assume that it's not cid unlock since you have to go the extra mile to get it cid unlock . can you tell me if you are seeing network logo ie singular or t mobile on the screen is yes it's possible that' it's not cid unlock. but keek asking hopefully some one would have the right answer for you. good luck

If in doubt just CID unlock again. It doesn't hurt anything and that way you can be sure that you are unlocked.

I have successfully upgrade my rom to Molski.biz 2.26.10.2 Final Edition Rom as well!
It solved all the bugs facing by using the default Dopod rom! Hurray!

Great man I I'm Using Molski .biz 3.o version. Now come my next challenge. wifi Have you gotten that to work yet? if yes please let me know the procedure cause i can't get that to work.

i unlocked the CID with no problems
but when i start the upgrading it till me : u need newer NPF file

First -- which WM6 ROM are you having trouble installing??
If you'll read the Wizard Mobile 6 forums, just about all the threads will advise you to flash the T-Mobile 2.26 for a strong 2.26 base before flashing to a WM6 ROM.

From your last post, it looks like you already have a IPL/SPL of 2.26. Your initial post reported it to be 2.16. It also appears that you have a G3 chip, so there shouldn't be any problems in flashing any of the WM6 ROMs.
Try maybe a different ROM. I'm using the X-Plore 1.1 by anchillus and have been using it on my 8125 longer than any other one I've tried. In fact, my Wizard is starting to feel neglected. . .
From all the information you've given, you should be good to go with ANY ROM.

ok new update regarding my situation
i tried x-plore 1.1 as what newbie2 advised & it accepted the update
after its done there was no change it was still 2005
but i noticed that the when it started up the 2006 flash screen was there
i know that when this happened it mean that i didnt unlock the device but i would say that i did twice & in both of them the wizard started on its own
is there a signal that can make me be more sure that it was unlocked
still waiting for advise ppl

Yes I know the answer you're.... this is always the case when you're.... I'm certain you're.... CID-Locked.
You can only succesfully CID-unlock you're device from buttons 1.x rom! Lokiwiz can tell you it unlocked succesfully, but it didn't! Make sure you're not confusing CID from SIM-unlock. Follow this tutorial:

I am picking up a tmobile mda this weekend. I have a few things I would like to do to it but all the talks about the different roms and kitchens, radio etc can be a bit confusing. Here is what I would like to do maybe you can point me in the right direction.
1. I am an att customer so it will need to be unlocked
2. I would like windows mobile 6
3. Touch would be a big plus
4. I would also like to use the contacts that are scrollable that I have seen on a few youtube vids.
Any help would be much appreciated. I am reading the flashing guide as well as any other guides that look helpful. Thanks in advance for your help.

got a question for anyone who can help. I got a busted cingular 8125 of a friend how drove over it, so with time and running through numerous sites i ended up here....blah,blah,blah... point is i followed ya'lls instructions to the letter and low and behold not only did i replace the screen and housing but i also unlocked and upgraded to ver 3.08 as advised in faria's walkthrough.
Now (finally...) i just wanna know if it is at all possible to upgrade the cingular 8125(a wizard variant) to wm6???

Did you CID unlock or SIM unlock (or both)?
If you are not sure then go through the links in the 2nd post. If CID unlocked then you can install WM6 but again go through the links in 2nd post and the sticky thread on "how to flash" in this forum.

i recommend the xda roms easy to do and a great perfomance.
but when you're a handy person use the central kitchen.

Not sure what you mean by private, but I'd suggest upgrading the radio to the UK T-Mobile 2.19 version here.

Will that work here in the US? Is it better than my Cingular 2.25.11 radio?
Also my phone is not unlocked or anything. Will I have to unlock it to be able to upgrade the Radio Rom?

Also my phone is not unlocked or anything. Will I have to unlock it to be able to upgrade the Radio Rom?

Radio ROM Upgrade????
OooooooooK________...... Let's pretend that i have the slightest clue as to where to begin (and incase you're wondering I looked it up before i typed this, and didn't see anything for the radio rom alone)... may i have a link to a guide, i should be able to figure it out from there. Also just incase i screw up is this a brick risky situation or can it be reversed?
