Hi. I have a question.
How do I set up an FTP server? I did it before and I forgot how..
I want to set up an host computer since me and my girlfriend are working on projects together for school and sometimes we can't get together (okay okay sometimes her computer crashes also.. =P) so I purpose that I set up a ftp so we can share files and sorts based of off my home computer. But I forgot how or which programs to use!
Can anyone walk me though it?
Thanks,
Rytt

Hello Everyone,
I recently bought an EEE PC as a second computer and seeing as it's about the most easily lost or stolen laptop ever made, I thought it might be an idea to run some software on it that might help me recover it should it ever go missing.
After trying a few existing bits of software and not finding any satisfactory, I resorted to writing my own.
Since it seemed useful to me, I thought I'd make it available to anyone interested. It's a very early version at the moment and very basic, but I don't think there are too many bugs (famous last words!! ).
I thought I would post a message here as I use this forum quite a lot, and I know a lot of people here won't have a problem with editing the config file to set it up, I've tried to make things as simple as possible. However, if you don't know the difference between POP3 and SMTP mail servers, this app is probably not for you!!
If people are interested, I'll continue to develop it further. A few ideas are listed on my website.
Visit www.ajhonline.co.uk for download links and help.

this isn't hard to circumvent.
Nice app, but wouldn't they probably wipe the HDD?
How would it compare to Lojack's (utilizes Computrace) service? Some laptops have the Computrace service embedded in the bios. I currently use a Dell D410 and Panasonic CF-19, and they both have Computrace built into the bios. If someone formats my hard drive, or installs another harddrive, the bios will rebuild the neccessary files, run in the the background and start reporting the IP address back to Lojack.
Yes, of course the hard drive could be wiped, or it could never be connected to the internet. It is also easy to circumvent, although if I do develop it further, it would be fairly straight forward to make it less obvious and better hidden. This is only a very first version, to gauge interest more than anything,
It's not meant to be 100% foolproof, that probably isn't possible anyway. The advantage is it's free. I really developed it because I couldn't get Adeona to work (it just kept failing to connect to its server), not to compete with commercial solutions.
Hmmm, you know how I said I didn't think there were any bugs....
I just found that the Windows version was not saving the detected IP addresses correctly, so it would email you a "new" IP address message every time the computer was rebooted.
However the problem is now fixed, and a new version 0.1a available for download. The cross platform version wouldn't have been affected, but there's a new version of that too, just for completeness.
Sorry
Alex
I've now made some additions and released a new version which includes the changes below:
Added a separate configuration application to simplify initial setup
Added the ability to encrypt the mail server password for better security
Added a link to DNSTools to the IP Detected email for easy lookup of the WHOIS records for the IP Address
As before, visit www.ajhonline.co.uk and download version 0.2 from there.
Alex
PS - If you are using the Windows version and doing an upgrade from a previous version, make sure you keep a copy of your existing fyl.properties file, otherwise it will be overwritten during the install and any existing known IP addresses will be lost.
huff,.
i wish i have seen this before i lost my friend laptop,.
great help sir,. keep up,.
Version 0.22 is now available for download from www.ajhonline.co.uk.
It's only a small update; you are now able to specify a range of IP addresses as already known so that you don't get an email when one of those is detected.

Hi all,
Sorry to ask this, but I've been thinking the past few days about this.
I wasn't sure if the Software section would be the right place, so thought here would be a good start.
Is there any FTP clients (for WIFI usage only) for the Kaiser?
To download a remote server / PC and download things to the phone, such as music and films etc?
I was wanting to ftp something from my NAS drive to my Xbox 1 the other day, and ended up needing to switch on a laptop to do it, but while ftping, I decided to google this, and came up fairly dry.
Total Commander seems to say it will do it, but doesn't (or not that I could figure out).
Have you used one, and chuffed with it?
Ideally, my only criteria is, that it can do server to server, so FXP, so NAS to Xbox etc.
Thanks guys,
Kaiser FTP client
yes, Check out Resco's. Resco.net I think. They make an awesome file explorer and you get the registry editor and ftp client for free.
Ok so this is the scenario i have 2 computer at 2 different locations (Home and Office). On my main computer there is software which i would like to use on my another computer simultaneously. Like i am using the software on my home computer(Main PC) and brother wants to use the same software at our office, so i have created 2 users on my main PC and i would like my brother to use 2nd user to login remotely and use that software. Let me tell software has capability to be used at 2 place simultaneously.
Waiting for your help
Thankyou
Omg is that so much difficult, ,, no reply yet.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
umm, yeah its possible. all you need is a citrix server ( or similar ), i think there area few bits of software that do work on desktop machines. but i can't remember any of the top of my head. i know i have iraap for my mac, i will take a quick look for you now. But a quick warning if you wanting to do this over the internet. its going to be much harder working out port forwarding ETC over doing it in a lan enviroment. so you possible could use hamachi. ok i'll get back to you in a bit.
and yes this is quite an advanced thing todo. what your technically trying to do is create a server in which multiple members can connect to and do things simultaneously. so your not going to want to do this very much as it will cause a reasonable amount of strain on your system and certainly slow it down. if you are going to do this alot i would recommend investing on a cheap server
ok check this out, fire me off a pm if you need any help. i'm happy to help
Unless your computer is setup as a server (or hacked to allow so) you're only allowed one desktop connection at a time?
Please someone correct me if I am wrong?
Edit: NM, people replied whilst I had the page open without refreshing....

just thought you might be intrested. i believe normally a windows machine will allow remote desktop connections, which means you can control the computer from another machine, very much similar as vnc. but a terminal server (citrix) allows multiple users to connect and run completely seperate sessions, but there are program that run the services needed to run terminal server witout a full blown server operating system.
just thought i would clear this up for you
I udnerstand that part, but as his PC is likely to be a standalone windows enviroment, and with him working on it, his brother will not be able to log in from the second location, as standard, due to that policy. I know there is a dll that can be hacked to allow it though. I have an understanding the RDP side, but he is using a windows machine not a terminal server/virtualised server etc, so from my perspective, his question was is it possible as is, not how do I make this possible by throwing money at it.

no these are completely free peices of software that require no dll hacking, they create there own server services that replicate terminal services.
Thanks for the help slamming, but i must tell you i am a noob concerning this.
I have checked out the link. Can you be more specific without all the jargons how should i go about achieving it,i would be really grateful.

ok well, what your are wanting to create is a terminal server, this is used alot in enterprise and it allows multiple user to connect to the same machine and use all the same applications and share data. But in enterprise they will use a machine called a thin client, this machine will boot straight from the network and connect to the terminal server. but you aren't going to want to buy a thin client so you are going to have to download another application on the second computer. but we will come to that later. what i think would be a good idea is if you were to read up on terminal services, terminal servers and maybe even thin cleints, as i think you do need to be able to understand the majority of the jargon that is going to be used. i would recommend you don't under take this task if you don't have quite abit of time or aren't confident in your IT skills

alright then while your learning about terminal server, i will begin looking into software for you for both ends both server and cleint.
I'm recently developing a file explorer for interior unlocked wp8 phones and FTP may be the best way to transfer files via WiFi especially when there are a huge amount of files, FTP is more convenient than Webserver or other ways. However, I learned little knowledge about network so I can do nothing about it because some of the classes are missing and I don't know which to replace with.
There ARE apps in store which uses SharpFTPServer such as Yxplayer so it is possible to port one.
BTW, @GoodDayToDie , do you plan to add FTP support to your Native Access project ?
Wasn't planning to, really, but you have a point about making it easy. HTTP is fine for downloading specific files but isn't actually a very good choice for a file system browser.
