Say Goodbye To Using Tzones Or Blackberry Internet On Mda/dash/sda - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

ok guys heres a heads up.... i found this on an internal tmobile website (yes i work for tmobile)
Internet Security Patch for Data Devices
On February 22, the first phase of a security patch that prevents customers from having full internet access without the correct data features on their account was rolled to West Coast markets(California, Seattle, Denver, etc.).
Customers with an MDA, SDA, Dash, or other data devices may call indicating they could previously sync wirelessly and browse the internet without a data feature on the account.
The second phase scheduled for March 1, will complete the security patch in remaining markets.
Action Steps
· Apologize for the inconvenience.
· Explain the differences between our data features.
· Educate customers that in order to access the internet and sync e-mail wirelessly, a Total Internet Add-on must be purchased.
· Do not apply any credits for this issue.
· Do not transfer to Technical Care. Handle as a Billing inquiry
****MOD make this a sticky or whatever..

there might be some truth to this. i wasnt able to connect a little while ago but i thought it was because i flashed a new rom

where you located ??? ... it may just be an outage... i am not holding my breath on tmobile implementing those changes anytime soon even if they said they already started it.... BUT u never know... i will try to keep you guys posted on anychanges

If U are having internet problems THIS could be the reason Y

It is still working. so i think it might be regional or something else.

All of a suddden today my internet won't work (tzones 5.99 plan). I have the 2.19 cingular rom and it has been working great till today. I did many soft-resets and wanted to hear other suggestions before I do a hard-reset or possibly a downgrade to aku3.3..

sorry, wtf is that? I am running pdaviet3, if that is what you're asking.
have you set up tzones to work with your wm6?
yea it has been working for over a month on wm6 now. I had a issue last week and a softrestart fixed it. The problem was with spb insight which I uninstalled now. Softrestarts don't do anything now.. not sure what happened.
wierd.. ok.. and its working again. That was odd, I hope it stays functional now.

How did you get it to work? Im having the same problem.
tzones no longer works check www.howardforums.com tmobile section for details. they blocked all ports and only allow limited wap access, u need to change to the 19.99 blackberry plan inorder to use the inet on ur mda.. ****ty i know.
It seems full access is back on for the moment with TMobile. There are several dozen threads in many forums about access being turned on and off as apparently TMobile works on the network.
The only official statement I have seen TMobile make is that 3rd party apps are going to be disabled soon.
My guess is they are preparing their system for the new highspeed band and using the current one to test various methods of restricting access. This may possibly mean adding more payment tiers or levels of speed. Just a guess on my part but in my opinion a welcome feature. To be able to pick and choose several features (push email, msging, speed, or data caps) tailored to individual usage would be ideal.
Tmobile seems to be frustrating a lot of people by turning on and off access to their system without any public notice. Seems like they should just make a statement on their intent.
Posts on Howard forums and here confirm TMobile is tightning up internet access. Recent "internal memo leak" indicates they were attempting to stop access for 3rd party apps. Also attemping to stop people on tzones sbility to recive anything but wap material.
Just be aware the "free ride is coming to a end soon".
As a bonus they also appear to be messing up the paying customers and aggravating them too.
Please save the messing with a loyal customer talk or for xxx speed and price I'm leaving for the Tmobile csr's because no one here cares if you lost your free or discounted access.

Can only get online using PIE

So I was sitting in class hoping to fire up Slingplayer on my stock AT&T Tilt and see what was on TV at home but no dice. Then on the way to the car I tried firing up Google Maps and again, no dice. Neither app seemed to think I was connected. Then when I got home (I live down the street from school) I tried sending & receiving my POP & IMAP accounts and again, nothing. However, this whole time, I have been able to get online with PIE just fine. I can browse to whichever web site I choose. Oh, and I tried using Opera and it wouldn't work, either! I'm really confused. And to top it off I just tried the wife's Blackjack and it is having the same exact problems. I know this may be the wrong forum for this but does anyone know what might be going on behind the scenes??
Having the same problem here in Sacramento. It started sometime late this afternoon for me. PIE works just fine but nothing else can connect to the Internet - Live Search, Google maps, Opera mini, RSS Hub, etc.
Same thing just happened to mine and my wife's tilts, simultaneously. PIE works, nothing else can connect to the Internet.. Not Opera, not Garmin XT, not HTC weather, nothing. WTF? Has AT&T done something? BTW, I'm in Portland, Oregon.
Having zero luck getting online here as well, was working at 6:30P in Seattle, and no connection (incl PIE) now...Just updated my ROM so having a network outage actually is a better outcome than self-inflicted phone bricking Any ATT page on network availability or anything?
I am down in Los Angeles, and am also not able to download any data on neither 3G nor Edge since late Tuesday (Feb 5, 2008) afternoon.
Same here except I can't get online at all with any program... maybe a problem with ATT network?
yeah i just experienced this today as well. I can only get online with the proxy settings, but when i disable it, its a no go! dammnit, and i cant do slingplayer with the proxy settings! I think its definitely an att network issue!
Mine's down in San Diego. At least it isn't just me... or is that not a good thing?

curiuos, what data plan do you have??
Could this be an attempt by ATT to prevent Internet sharing and force us to pay for tethering? If PIE still works, but everything else has dropped dead, is that a deliberate change by ATT? Anyone know enough to know if that's possible?
They are probably redirecting somethings to open of the connection ways. I have been having problems, but with a few apps I can run opera and Windows live but not resco update or resco radio or skype and some others. I was having major problems last night with connection problems, it was jumping from no service to Edge to G.

well, thats what im trying to troubleshoot now, Ive notice that im only able to get on when im connected thru att's proxy setting, but when i disable it, i cant get on at all. I have the mediawork data plan, so i wanna see if they are forcing people with a non pda plan to go thru the proxy to be connected!

I have the PDA Personal plan, but always disabled (unchecked) the proxy server option. I do not know the proxy server address, so I cannot test if my data download is restored if the proxy server option is enabled.
In case anyone's wondering I have the PDA Unlimited plans w/ 1500 text messages on both my Tilt & Blackjack. Haven't changed any settings yet and to be honest I'm too lazy to try and mess with it at the moment...
My plan is PDA personal. (Unlimited data) I don't think I have any proxys set. ( I soft reset after initial setup before the ATT customizations installed.) Everything worked great until our two tilts stopped accessing the internet simultaneously this evening. Except of course for PIE, which still works fine on both devices.
What is the proxy server setting for ATT...mine is off as well, and have never played with it to turn it on or off before...
Unlike the rest of you, Pocket Internet Explorer does not go online for me.
I have the settings in my Signature if anyone hasn't looked. Why whats so big about my data plan princeasi?

Preventing automatic connection to the internet

Im a new owner of a MDA Vario III from T-mobile and for the first month of my contract iv got an unlimited data plan. However, this runs out in a couple of weeks and i wont be re-subscribing to it.
Currently my phone connects to the t-mobile internet very often, for e-mails, weather, MSN etc when i dont want it to. Is there any way of making my phone ask for confirmation before connecting to the internet?
Also, when im in a wi-fi hot spot (am at university, so most days) is there any way of making it auto-connect to it and download everything then?
thanks guys
you can use KaiserTweak or Advanced Configuration to change the settings of how they connect. and no there is no way to get the WiFi to pop up like that unless it is running constantly which would be a major battery drain.

Too much 3G traffic

Hello all,
This might be a very newbie and stupid question, but please help me!
I have bought a Samsung Galaxy S from Vodafone Romania just a few days ago with a 1 GB data plan. Every thing worked perfectly (traffic was low and fast, some 30MB of download + upload in the last days) but this morning.... surprise 1.7 GB of traffic downloaded overnight (checked my My Vodafone online account and there it was: some 900 MB at around 2 am and another hundreds MB at 5 am). I was sleeping, the telephone was beside me at all time, no one else in the house etc.
Here is a list of apps which were installed on the device:
Best Matrix Live Wallpaper by yu xin
Angry birds
BATstat battery widget by martin eder
google goggles
magic tg tracker by shalafi
Moxier world
weather bug
es file explorer
notification notes by blee tech
vr tunnel lite live
ghost commander
data counter widget
mtg pedia
earth live wallpaper + map packs
star wars live wallpaper
barcode scanenr
yahoo messenger
star wars light saber
remote rdp lite
kindle
android manager wifi
Has anyone encountered this situation before? Can any of these apps cause such traffic?
I have wifi at home, the wifi on the device is enabled when I am at home (and so it was the night before). All I did was download Angry Birds and just played a few levels for fun and then went to sleep.
Could some have used the Wireless AP option, could someone tether to the device without my permission, wirelessly?
Maybe the bluetooth was on; could some have used it without a pin or without me accepting the connection?
I have talked to vodafone support and they say they will know only 4 days after the beginning of the monthly plan (which is on the 2nd, making this possible only on the 6th). Could they check then, the iport that my device was connecting to? Maybe in this way I could identify the application.
Please HELP!
Best regards,
T.
I note you have Data Counter Widget installed.
Have you checked the downloaded amount showing in that App against what your online Vodaphone account is saying?
If there is a discrepancy you will at least know the data has not come from your phone but an outside source.
Looking at your Apps I can't see anything that would generate that kind of figure.
Have you checked to see if there was a Vodaphone update?
- The data from VDF seems very similar to the one reported by the traffic counter;
- Having restarted the phone, I don't think that this was an update: I remember checking the about phone screen before restarting it and there was the old info.
Still... 1.7 GB update?
Thanks for the quick respone,
T.

Well, apart from update files or other items from Voda I can't see anything that should generate such a high volume of traffic... It doesn't make sense!
You may want to ask Voda if they have issued any large files or can explain the traffic.
Other than that you have the time it happened, you could try going through a file explorer (Astro is my choice) and checking the date/time/size stamp to see if anything correlates.
The only apps that could use data are yahoo messenger and remote rdp lite but so much in a night .... Have you installed an app the day before the huge download ?? Or used one that you don't use a lot ??
On Saturday I only installed ES file explorer and angry birds.
I have talked this morning to Vodafone support and they have listed a request to their technical team with a 72 hours deadline. So I'll call them again on Wednesday and see what's going on.
The guy from Vodafone told me that it is really strange as others who have complained about a similar problem had their traffic spanned over a whole month (and that was pretty obvious...) but in my case everything was downloaded in 2 bursts.
I'll just have to wait and see what happens...
T.
cause you are form Romania , big hi for you and all Romanians .i think the problem if u have Froyo.
is in Froyo it self .it is really not a problem . put in Froyo there is option that save your data(application data) automatically and when ever u reinstall an application all the data and sittings will be restored .and u can guess how much data is there .
u can disable this feature by going to sitting and then go to privacy and u can disable backing data .
Thanks for the idea, but the problem is I don't have Froyo (yet! ). But I'll be careful once I update my device to Froyo.

Note.. what the poster is forgetting is this is direct downloaded material which is seen on the Vodaphone Online server not just on the Phone.
Publicly contactable IP address?
Hi there,
If you aren't using a proxy server via your cellular provider(IE a WAP apn setup with proxy), you have probably received a public IP address on your phone.
What could have happened is that someone somewhere(or a server) has been shunting data at your public IP address over night which would explain the data usage. The data doesn't need to be initiated by any program on your phone, only that you are contactable on the Internet.
I personally use a program called Droid Wall(Firewall for Android) which drops unrequested packets of data from the public Internet side. It also allows you to specifiy which installed programs on your phone may or may not use your cellular connection, or your Wifi connection.
I generally use Droid wall to refuse internet 3G and Wireless access to programs which I know shouldn't require it, such as games
If you aren't using your providers Wap Proxy server and you are still getting this significant data usage, I would recommend changing over to it from the normal Internet APN you are currently using.
Hi,
Thanks for the info. While I wait for Vodafone to research my problem, I'll give the firewall a try.

Thanks! I found the app on the Market and the rooted part was clearly typed into the title . I'll give it a try later today.

for people having issues with radio
Early this morning I noticed that I could only connect to certain sites, my weather wouldn't update one out of ten apps would download from the market, two out of eleven feeds would update from my gingeritis thunderbolt. At first I thought it was my device, and my gb radio. After calling around I saw I wasn't the only one. I went to the Verizon store and their stock phones were doing the same thing. This is from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Friends in Ohio and new jersey have confirmed the same. I wanted to put this out the for all those flashing new radios trying to figure out what they are doing wrong, when it is actually a Verizon 4g issue.

I'm having the same problem here in Phoenix, AZ. When you go into the LTE radio settings what do you get when you run a ping test? I get this:
PingIpAddr: Pass
Ping Hostname(www.google.com): Pass
HTTP Client test: Unknown
I'm thinking the HTTP Client test is what is causing the issues we are seeing, not sure what would be effecting that.

Yep there is something going on, I finally got an answer back from the ping test I ran it kept saying unkown for the HTTP Client Test, if finally came back with an ISO exception fail. It only seems to be effecting some websites and all of the google services (google voice will not connect, can't go to www.google.com, or gmail). I can get to google.com on 3G but everything else still will not connect.

maybe 4gLTE phones, not just 4G?
So,
I was pulling my hair out yesterday at hard-to-explain experiences with my week-old LG Revo. I have turned off 4G as I don't regularly live/work in a 4G LTE enabled area--so just 3G CDMA Automatic at this point.
This thread (I went and found the original from the Tbolt forum) is interesting as it seems to mirror what I experienced all day yesterday, and to some extent am still experiencing.
Given I am on Wifi much of the time (home office), I was frustrated that I was having access problems to various sites/apps trying to refresh data--so I decided to look at the traffic coming from my phone over wifi and found something very interesting. Looks like even when I turn off "allow data over mobile networks" there is some traffic on these 4G LTE phones that Verizon forces over their network--and given something is up with their network and certain sites since yesterday, it creates havoc even if you are on a stable Wifi connection.
While it would take more work to prove and divide out what kind of traffic they are forcing over the mobile 3G (or 4G) connection, it appears anything to do with email, google (or most of google services..GV, for example), twitter, facebook (unless you explicitly go to m.facebook.com in a browser). Interestingly, the "stock apps" seem to be able to handle whatever they are doing more gracefully.. I use Fastmail.fm for email and it works fine via the stock email client. However, as chance would have it, yesterday was the day I was trying a few market-based mail clients to get better IMAP features and kept having all kinds of timeouts.. come to find out, these clients can't even talk over Wifi as whatever Verizon has done on the phone forces traffic over mobile 3G/4G data and some apps can't seem to handle the fact that Wifi is on, but they aren't using the wifi connection for data access! Something is definitely strange, but I personally don't have time to look into it.. would be interesting if a dev with a couple 4G LTE devices and a couple non-LTE (OG Droid, for example) and do some network traffic analysis. I want to think you will find something interesting, especially about a weird forcing of traffic over 3G/4G even on wifi depending on the app and the target IP/hostname.
- Phil
( I would post this to the original thread, but I'm too much of a newbie here on XDA..spent too much time reading XDA and never registered/interacted)
I'm having the same problem in greenville, sc. so i did a factory restore and my phone said it can not find my sim card. i tried for hours to log in for it to find my sim card. i even cleaned my sim card with an eraser. it couldn't even get my phone working until late that evening when i went to the verizon store. the guy there cut it on and it just booted up and i was standing there looking crazy i tried it all day. he wanted to troubleshoot my phone but i said no because i was rooted and i couldn't unroot becuase i couldn't get back in. now my google voice, weather bug, poynt still does not update after all that. it also took me over 40 attempts to sign back into google voice then i tested it. it can't send a text and if i send my phone a text through google voice it will get it 10+ hours later. i called verizon up and they think I'm making this stuff up i guess because they just told me to pull my battery and remove my sim card. same results. my friend is having the with his revolution and our other coworkers have the dx and they are laughing saying we don't have that problem.
confirmed funny business
So, one easy test that I seem to be able to validate here:
Take my 4GLTE phone (revo) -- 4G is turned off, but doesn't seem to matter. Use the browser to visit my mail provider (fastmail.fm)--either stock browser or Opera Mobile. Wifi is on..but as soon as the site is looked up, my 3G "up/down" arrows start to flash, until at some point it says "connection timed out" or whatever the browser way of reporting timeout is.
So, you could chalk it up to browser weirdness--however, step 2: my email is basically working through the stock email client--so I go to my email providers login IP log to see where I'm coming in from (fastmail provides such nice things.. one of the reasons I love them). Turns out my phone is never logging on via my home IP address over wifi..somehow the revo is redirecting traffic that normally would go via Wifi over the 3G network--EVEN when I uncheck allow data over mobile/3G connection!!
The 2 places I seem to come in to email from are either:
63.236.37.* -- qwest.com netblock -OR-
166.248.40.* -- myvzw.com netblock
Now, the interesting thing about the first netblock..that is apparently some deal with OZ mail services (Em.oz-verizon.polling.oz-service.com) that apparently was a deal Verizon did for feature phone email access. The second netblock makes more sense..that is my phone's actual IP at the time. Either way, this weird traffic routing for email is a bit frustrating and *DIFFERENT* from what I experience when I pick up my wife's Droid.
Picking up the Droid and opening the browser, I go to fastmail.fm, it loads immediately without going over 3G, and I can login, and now FastMail's login log shows a web login over my home IP address--which means on the Droid, Verizon is not redirecting traffic... so it has something to do with 4G SIM-card based phones (Charge, Revo, Thunderbolt), and I'm surprised more folks aren't having issues at this point.
One thing I noticed on my Verizon account when I upgraded to the Revo.. the standard "National IP 3G" service was removed from my account, and the following services were added:
4G DATA TRANSPORT
4G INTERNET ACCESS
DYNAMIC-PRIVATE IP
4G APPLICATION ACCESS
So, that isn't all that profound, but makes me think this is why the Droid operates differently than my 4GLTE phone, even though I am not using the LTE network in my home location.
I'm a little more than frustrated that Verizon is passing data over the 3G/mobile network for certain target IPs even when I have *unchecked* allow data usage over mobile network in Settings.. not to mention not really using Wifi when I have Wifi turned on based on some set of routing rules they have applied. Worse, they have somehow broken certain apps use of IP connectivity with their routing weirdness for certain destinations.
I don't have the patience to call 1st level Verizon support on this as you are so many levels from someone who will understand the above details--but maybe someone who has a tighter connection with a verizon network aware person can pass this along and ask for some answers.
- Phil
I'm having weird intermittent issues with data. I believe it started last night. I thought I have to hold it a certain way or something in order to get it to work. While it shows I am 3G connected all the time, sometimes my market says not connected, etc.
I really haven't worried about it too much, but I haven't had anything critical to do on the network yet.
My guess would be either they are revamping their network for 4G crap, or they are working on getting their hardcore surveillance up to monitor everyone on their new *happy* tiered plan (that thank God we're all exempt from).
Oh, and incoming calls have a super weird delay...
cautiously optimistic..
Well,
As of a little bit ago, the weird routing seems to have disappeared. I would like to think it had to do with growing rumbling about app+network connectivity weirdness across various forums--not to mention, I would love to think my tweet to VerizonWireless was helpful too, but that would be mostly dreaming, I think
For anyone else who has been having weird issues, might be worth a retest and see if it works differently for you. I have done nothing to my phone since a couple days ago when it started (initially I tried several reboots and turn on/off LTE), so it wasn't anything I did on my end.
In my case, simply loading up fastmail.fm while on wifi now works perfectly; nothing is redirected over 3G, and the browser doesn't timeout. In fact, it is fast and smooth--which has not been the case for over 2 days now.
Hopefully whatever it was is now a distant memory..

17 mb up and 5mb down and google still takes a minute to load....problem persist only mobile versions of websites load up like they should. Just about any website I use partially loads or hangs at 3/4 load for a while before completing. 4/5 signal bars.
I went to the VZW store last night and also decided to check if it was just me or if other 4G phones were affected as well.
The TB and Revolutions on display also had the issue. Strangely however the Droid Charge ran it just fine and had no problems.
I also spoke with Tech support this morning and they had no known network problems. They tried to duplicate to issue but could not find quadrant in the market. He said astronomy picture ran fine.
I've still got the issue and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the apps.
Oh, and I've finally rooted the Revolution. I've got some questions about that but that will be another post.
conspiracy?
Is it just me or does anyone find it strange that google of all siteson a BING powered phone seems to take a long time to connect? would any of you put it past verizon to sweeten their deal with MS by slowing down their competitors? I don't think its a network issue. The problem i think is the phone. I wonder if the hackery guys on this forum could look into this? I suspect some foul play ...
Been on a backpacking trip since last Friday and up to that point 4g was more like 3.5g. Just about all mobile versions of websites worked fine, but they took forever to finish loading. Turned 4g back on today after about a week of issues and its back to normal if not better. Still the 13-15mb speeds while at work and now 25mb down at home. Upload speeds are still around the 4mb range. Websites fully load
