Best Place For E-books? - Off-topic

Just thought i'd ask this here as i know a number of you use for devices for reading
Where's the best place to get e-books from either free or purchase.
In either txt, html, or PDF format. The reason is i have just bought the sony portable reader, (what a amazing device it is), problem is you can only buy books from the connect e store if you live in the USA, and I'm in the UK
So any sites would be great.
Cheers...........

"problem is you can only buy books from the connect e store if you live in the USA" <-- that is weird. It is like saying, 'the email will only send to people in the USA'
Anyway, try this

You may also try http://www.fictionwise.com/ good collection including free books

I Know I e-mailed e connect store support and they reply was they will only accept payment with a US credit card ( they are a little hard to get in the UK ) and no plans for a UK release.
I'll have look at the sites provided though
Thanks....

I found a lot of free books at:
http://www.mobipocket.com/freebooks/default.aspx
I even found some Dutch/Flemish books there, good thing because it's my native laguage.

one of my favorite authors is at http://sennadar.plebian.net/
He has two long fantasy series and a short sci-fi book.
J-Man5

this might be a bit obvious i tend to get most of my books (those out of copyright anyway) from Gutenberg where they're all free to download.
i usually download them as zip files and view/read them with the last free version of ubook

This is a good site for various free ebooks - alot of current releases available.
http://www.baen.com/library/
Also I'll look up the address for the free download of the cd images of david webers books (honour harrington series and others - all sci-fi)

Battle of the PDF Readers

After doing some research and banging my head against a wall, it seems I've come down to 2 choices.
BeamReader PDF Viewer or Documents to Go
Having read review after review, Beam seems fine for what I need (reading PDFs on the go), but it still seems a bit of a mixed bag. Reports indicate it's not as "feature rich" as Docs to Go. Of course, the "feature rich"-ness of Docs to Go includes editing MS Office docs on the go... something I don't have a real NEED for at this time... but could in the future.
The obvious solution is to just purchase the cheaper of the two (Beam) and live with my choice if I do need better features in the future.
Instead, I'd rather go for the final showdown and get the view from fellow forum members.
Thoughts?
(Lack of links to said apps on Androlib is a result of my n00b status:
To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed.)
There is a free PDF reader by Maciej that does a perfect adequate job for those who occasionally need to view a pdf. It's not the fastest, but doesn't appear any worse that Beamreader when I tried their free trial.
I'm happy with Repligo Reader

Where do you get your epub books and magazines?

Hey Everone,
I have a NC and I see everyone saying how they have hundreds of epub magazines and books that they sideload, etc...
I was just wondering where everyone gets their epub media, either free or paid? What are the best places to look?
Any advice for a noob with a Nook would be appreciated.
Look in torrent sites. There's a bunch.
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
If you have Usenet access try the alt.binaries hierarchy and look for e-books. Tons of ebooks of all types.
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA Premium App
If you happen to come across some books and magazines in the places the others suggested you can use calibre to convert them to epub format.
I like O'Reilly books because you can get them in multiple formats at any time once purchased including ePub and PDF. They run ebook specials all the time, so I'd recommend getting on their mailing list if you like tech books.
My Library. I can literally borrow tons of eBooks and AudioBooks straight from their Website. Sure they Expire after 2 weeks but hey, I didn't spend a cent and didn't break a single law. Usually I read a book once anyway.
And of course there are sites out there that let you buy a Book without Den but sometimes they charge a Premium or the selection sucks. Of course these are the Legal ways that don't involve buying from the Big 3(Google, B&N, Amazon)
You can go the Gray route of course, namely Shady sites or torrents but the dificulty of finding a book or magazine varies depending on popularity. It can be fairly simple and easy, or cost you hours of time and be near impossible. Also you usually have to know what your looking for beforehand, unlike other places that help you find books you might be interested in.
There's my 3ยข.

my biggest issue with torrents is that there are so many fake ebooks out there, for those who have downloaded tons that way, how can you be sure they're the real ones? For example, when harry potter book 7 came out, the ebook that was out there actually only had 3 chapters of the real story and the rest of the ebook was fan fiction! Someone put it out there to mess with people.
My second biggest issue with torrents is I don't like to bootleg (anymore). Although they charge an outrageous price for ebooks on the big 3.

You can buy ebooks at www.baen.com in multiple formats (including epub) - all without DRM.

Hello XDA-People!,
With a little intro, I live outside the US. I also live in a country that is yet to officially have Windows Phone 7 and/or Market Place. So I had to create an American account, that said, Microsoft was not accepting any credit card I try to use. (Because my account was US, they wanted a US cc)
I came accross this website, that allows you to create virtual credit cards. I tried one of their cards and it worked ! I was even more surprised than happy.
Anyway, here is the link to the website: https://www.entropay.com.
Some important highlights :
I have been with them for about 9 months, haven't experienced any issues.
They will (probably) ask you to verify your account by sending governmental identification documents, which was PITA for me btw.
Their service is completely free, except they take 4.95% of what you load onto your cards.
They do not accept applications from the USA.
To load a virtual card, first you need to link a credit card.
Wow, we even need a workaround TO PAY THEM MONEY?
Good luck.
Working great, thanks!

i assume it involves using a US VPN?
Plus you need a US credit card in order to buy any of the said magazines, books, movies etc... So it's pointless.
heh, I just want the $25 credit!!
Not really,
i'm out of USA, and could buy a movie and a book with a US VPN + International credit card.
Just give a US Zip code, the billing address vs register are not checked.
but my problem is: when i back to my N7 or my Gnexus i couldn't see the movie because it recognize that i'm out of US (My Google play movie version ends with "br").

Yes it works but I have seen people with suspended wallet accounts because of these fake addresses. People were crying even on this forum because of this issue. Not everyone face this problem but probably they do random checks.

VidCast - Bookmarklet for Casting MP4/WebM videos

Seen this on Reddit, works pretty good for MP4 and WebM videos for sites like Vimeo.
https://dabble.me/cast
*I should mention this only works with Chrome at the moment.
I wish there was some way to use this for Amazon Prime video....casting the full tab isn't a great option for me. Of course a mobile app would be the real answer but Amazon just won't do it!

Agree. Amazon Instant Video is pretty much the only thing my TiVos and TV have over Chromecast for my intended use.

AMEN!! WatchESPN, along with WatchDisney Junior, are the two channels that I have been wanting more than ANY other channel out there! I'm a huge college football fan and although I've got a pretty nice channel lineup and sports package via Charter, there are still games out there that just simply aren't offered around here on Charter. In addition to WatchESPN, I have a 4 yr old son and like how I used to be when I was younger and how most other kids his age are, he LOVES to watch cartoons, especially the likes of Disney Junior, Cartoon Network, Sprout, etc. The WatchDisney Junior channel coming to the Chromecast would just make my (and my son's) day. I think the only thing holding it back is probably having to do something with licensing issues because if you've ever tried to view WatchESPN or WatchDisney on your computer, you must log-in to their service by typing in your cable tv service provider login info before being able to view those channels.
:good:

Likely there would be an app like HBO GO, which requires you to do the provider login on your phone/tablet during setup.
As always, be sure to contact the content provider to request support. Unlikely you'll get a response, but hopefully your vote will be counted.
It works very well for me at this www.mistreci.al with movreel and uptobox thats what i needed

I can tell you from my own personal knowledge that many of the content providers who rely on Cable Company Sub payments are very hesitant to release content for use on Big Screens (which CCast support basically is) which could hurt their Subscription fees later on due to the Chord Cutters taking the cheaper route to their content.
One of the Major hold ups with Time Warner and CBS in that last contract battle was over rights to Internet streaming.
Time Warner wanted the rights to them but CBS wanted to hold on to it for further sales to companies like NetFlix and Hulu or even for their own sites (which the three major nets do now) To a OTA broadcaster it's easier to keep their content free because the content has already been paid for via the Advertising and the goal is to hook more viewers to the shows on their Network.
But someone like ESPN, HBO and SHOWTIME, they are highly dependent on Cable Subs and therefore can't just put the content out there so will likely require a Cable Subscription/Login to view because if they did it on their own without such a subscription or tried to do subscriptions on their own it would be cutting off their nose to spite their face plus add the cost of a Subscription support department they have to pay to maintain their own sub service. So those companies are likely to remain a Cable Sub only service.
This is the one thing Chord Cutters will have to deal with, Sure you can get the OTA stuff and some stuff from low rated networks trying to lure people to their content but the stuff you REALLY want will almost always require a Cable Sub to get.
I have been in quite a few meetings where this is discussed and while the greed makes them think about offering their own ala carte subscription model they quickly realize that no one is going to pay as much for HBO on HBO's website as they currently get from the Cable companies themselves.
And if the Cable companies decide they are not worth having on their system anymore these companies like HBO stand to lose their shirts!
So they back down quickly.
Just a quick comment on the Amazon Prime thing....
I think this may be a sign that things between Google and Amazon are not as rosy as they probably should be.
You would think Amazon Prime was all over this from day one but apparently not.
Now that the SDK is public I expect to see something from them in the future.
Good points. It's not easy to understand the policies and actions of all the parties involved unless you know something about the business model from their point of view.
BTW, it's "cord cutters", not "chord cutters", as in cable = cord. Chord usually refers to music or geometry, but in any case nothing to do with this topic.
Re: Amazon - I wonder if they are coming up with a media box solution too. Could explain their reluctance.
WhisperCast?
Of course Canadians ignore them because they offer no media content here. Which is strange as they're selling these walled-garden Amazon tablets with beautiful screens in Canadian stores, and nothing but Netflix & YouTube to watch on them.
