I have a Tmo mda gen 3
task: upgrade rom to faria
So I wanted to try the new wm6 rom (faria) so I starting reading and reading here on XDA and other places for any and all information about the best way to do an upgrade, mind you I already upgraded to 2.24 so my mda is already unlocked and ready to get flashed.
So I did a backup with sprite, I didnt do a updatefile step which is suppose to make an upgrade file so when you do get the new rom on its suppose to help ,but anyways I got a backup.
I flashed the rom to my mda and I had it working, just like everyone said, it was faster, more toys and seemed to work!
Now I did a (selective) restore (only restoring needed stuff), well... sprite warned about rom versions ,but it restored my files including my registry.
low and behold EVERY one of my programs worked, GPS, google maps, etc
,but 2 issues I can not resolve.
timewizard.exe randomly pops up
voicecommand does not work
so it appears the only advice for the timewizard.exe was reflash , which I have done a few times in trying to get voicecommand working ,but the popup message seems to come back, mainly after a registry restore.
voice command is the bigger one, it appears when I restore the registry it blows away some voice command entries from the pre installed voice command 1.6 and then voicecmd.exe does not want to run.
So my question is I am sooooo close to being able to make a backup change roms and get EVERYTHING back WITHOUT reinstall of software I can taste it ,but I need some input!
anyone know some good registry tools / editing suggestions to backup the registry and restore it without killing voice command?
Jeff
Try flashing back and creating an upgrade file. I'd love to know whether it works ;-)
Thats what I did and it worked, however what I did first was
flash to the orginal rom, 2.24 xcel
I restored the sprite backup , however voice command didnt even work going back to orginal rom.
then I removed voice command 1.5 from installed programs.
cleaned up some file space only had 6 meg left on main storage.
then I create the updatefile and saved it to sd card.
finally did another complete backup
flashed to new rom and then did a restore and now voice command works, I will be doing some more testing ,but I think I got it.
if I would have had to install each program seperately that would have killed me!
jeff
well.. forget what I just said.... nothing works!
back to the drawing board......
all the files restored correctly ,but the registry did not restore when using the update mode AND the updatefile.
none of my programs appeared in the start menu and none of the registry entires were restored....
I'll try doing some manually restoreing and see what I get... maybe I missed something....
Jeff
well... I hope my ramblings help someone else!
so I think the key here was simpling removing voice command from the backup file and upon restore everything will work.
so in short, backup upgrade rom , restore works with sprite , but without using the updatefile mode as it seems it just ignores the windows folder and the registry , so whats the point?
I test some more and post my comments to help others who do not want to reinstall everything when they upgrade rom's.
If you get this to work, that would be great, but I think you are playing with a loaded gun trying to do this. Many things are very different between WM5 and WM6. Depending on the type of backup done and what all gets restored, I can see corruption of the registry, and things just not being put in the right place.
Well... so far ALL my apps are working, gps, google, opera, etc about the only thing now is I am getting a Notification
TimeWizard.exe could execuite.
I am hunting that one down in the reg right now.
any ideas?
jeff
Well ... to follow up my thread with my self and maybe help a few others.
the last issue I had after a rom upgrade and a restore was the dreaded timewizard.exe notification popup when you turn on the mda or come back from power save.
after hours/days of messaging around I found that in the "Task Manager" tool you can view Notifications and in there I found timewizard.exe listed a few times, I just assume it had this as a warning/notification and was simply "Notifing" me of a "past" problem. after I cleared it out of there the mda has not shown any more Can not execute TimeWizard.exe popups!
I hope this help anyone else with this issue.

I have a tilt with the built-in spirit backup. I tried to use it but when I did the restore after updating the rom, alot of the programs wasn't restored properly or registry info was changed back to befault. I thought Spirit was supposed to restore everything after a hardrest or a rom upgrade? Did I do it wrong or something? Because of this, my computers all want to resync all the contacts and everything all over again, which is a pain as it takes hours to resync(thats another issue, but not related to this)
Hard-reset. Yes.
Rom upgrade. No.
And the built-in sprite backup was a trial. Did you buy it? If not you're screwed. Sorry man.
Sprite is retarded in a lot of ways. You should start using PIMBackup and -UC-.
Kraize
I used the one that came with the Tilt. Ok, so what I seen already, I got screwed. What program is good to do a complete backup, where I won't need to resync(where it thinks its a whole new phone) with my activesync after the restore?

The full version of Sprite is by far the best backup utility out there. SPB Back Up would come in a close second.
Sprite (full version) has an option for retoring to an "upgraded" rom. But my opinion is, if I change the rom all together (not just a hard reset) I am manually loading all my programs.
Test both extensively before purchase.
spirit backup says i don't have enough memory on my card but i have almost a gig empty. this just started. please help
by the way, this happens when i try to backup . thanks
If i update to the latest ROM (1.93), will i then lose all my data and settings? I have tweaked the phone a lil with advanced config. And added a few programs, and some are on internal storage and others on the phone itself. Im only going to update if it changes NOTHING but the updated stuff. I want to keep my tweaks, settings, programs, EXACTLY as it is. If thats not possible, then the update system sucks imo. Ill leave it as it is, cuz it took too much time tweaking every setting to suit me in the first place.
Ive recently updated my phone to the 1.93 WWE rom and it will remove all your settings from your device.
Your 4gb internal storage will be untouched (provided you follow the instructions and format your phones memory only and not the internal storage) youll be fine.
I found that programs like the Diamond Tweaker help getting the Diamond back to how I had it, altho I did do a Sprite backup, which restored all my texts and contacts, phew, so thats what was important to me. (There are options in the Sprite Backup software to backup only certain things on your phone so you can pick and choose what you like)
1.93 does have a significant speed improvement and im very happy i did upgrade (just gotta get rid of the email notification on the touchflo3D screen as it didnt back these up correctly as it says i have emails when the account isnt there)
But thats not a major issue and i haven't really looked indepth for a fix for that (im sure there is one, thats the beauty of the Diamond, there's usually a fix...somewhere!)
hehe!
If your not happy with having to restore you phone back to how you have it I dont blame you for leaving it as it is. Good luck with whatever you decide!
use sprite backup and restore using upgrade mode (level 1) all your apps/settings/preferences/pim etc will remain so long as your device doesnt change.

Nice one! Thanks for that. Will remember that for the next time I flash my Diamond.
You do have to watch out if you have the Call History tab add on for Touchflow that I found in the Diamond Forum as there are 2 different versions one for 1.37 roms and another for 1.93. I did try using the Sprite Backup software which restored everything but my clock was going mental.
Hard Reset the phone and then just restored my contacts and everthing's fine now. I will stress thats an add on problem and not a Sprite Backup issue.
Thanks for the heads up darthblane2k
im not sure if its a special version of sprite - but its certainly the one on the HTC e-club website.
A level 1 restore is if you are upgrading the ROM on the same device
A Level 2 restore is if you are upgrading the ROM on another diamond device
A Level 3 restore is if you are changing to another model device and only want basic info, eg PIM and stuff
Thank you all for your help. So what i have to do now is, download sprite backup from e-club? Back everything up, and then update to ROM 1.93 and then restore level 1, right?

Yes, you restore in ROM Upgrade mode. Think you have to change a setting in Sprite restore options to set it to level 1. Also you have the option to restore databases (eg emails contacts, calendar etc)
Thanks, im gonna try that now. But i dont seem to be able to find Sprite Backup anywhere on e-club. Can you tell me where i find the app? Also, where do i get Net framework 3.5 from?
Alright i found the CAB file for NET Framework 3.5 but when i run it on my phone it says it cant install right away. Anyone know why?
Nevermind. I dont feel like relying on Sprite to backup everything. And i dont feel like copying over all my files etc, to internal storage. Too annoying. Thanks anyway. Wish they made it easier.
I have a german Kaiser here, removed simlock with the tools from this site.
2 Questions:
After Updating to WM 6.1, will the simlock be still gone, or do I have to unlock the phone again.
Is the update worth it ? Htc tells on their site, that all stored data will be lost (ok i have to do a backup), but will WM 6.1 bring so much improvements that i should take the work ?

Not sure about the Stock HTC ROM, but I am using The Lone Ranger's (TLR 6.1) and love it.. I would do it. BTW the sprite backup will not restore a 6.0 ROM to 6.1 ROM.
So there is no way to backup my data first and restore it to 6.1 ? Then i wont do it, too much calender entrys, contacts, etc. installed.
Edit: Sprite Backup Homepage says that it is possible to restore after a rom upgrade:
http://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/answer.aspx?id=349&back=search.aspx?
i don't think i've seen anywhere that someone has succesfully restored a back up after upgrading, spb back up has a force restore after rom upgrade but i've never tried it personally, for me i would rather start clean and not risk any file corruption or problems right from the start.
I used a freeware app called PPC Pim Backup, it dosen't update your settings or files like Sprite Backup does, but it does backup all of your contacts, text messages, appointments, just about everything that would sync with outlook and a few things that don't.
I was able to use a backup created when my Tilt was at Wm 6.0 and successfully restore it to after I had reflashed my phone to WM 6.1.
The only downside was the first time I opened my inbox, I had to wait about 10-15 minutes or so for WM 6.1 to thread every single text message I had ever receieved or sent, but after that it worked fine.
Thanks for the tip with pim backup. worked great and the simlock is still gone after the update.
I wish I wouldve known about pim backup before I updated. anybody have a link to the 6.0 rom, so I can go back and start over?

How would you restore just data files?
sounds like he only restored files that sync, not reg hacks or system files, settings.
I'm new to this, but I ran Sprite backup on Q-Mobile 1.2, intending to upgrade to a WM 6.1 ROM. I tried a couple of WM 6.1 ROMs (Romeos 4.5.3, Garmin DK.3 Final, Dutty's NO4, and Virtual Vista 2.10), and was able to get my SMS messages, contacts and all that good stuff, but was unable to get my MMS messages.
Since I don't really know what I'm doing, I didn't poke around too much, but when I reloaded the Q-Mobile ROM back on, and ran the Sprite restore program, all of my SMS and MMS messages showed back up. I suppose it has something to do with the SMS/MMS directory structure in the WM 6.1 ROMs that I was trying out, but don't really know.
Just my .02. If someone knows what's going on, I'd be very appreciative if they could clue me in. Thanks
So is everyone talking about the AT&T WM6.1 ROM update from HTC from here:
http://www.htc.com/us/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=67&cat=2&dl_id=94
If so, has anyone had any issues with it with how it works? Any issues with the radio, etc? I downloaded but have not upgraded my Tilt yet.
Thanks

Does PIM Backup back up texts generated with the stock 6.1 threaded-text app?
Sounds like a handy little util if so.
I suggest SPB backup. It is available from their website and the trial version has five free runs of backup.
I used it and restored all reg edits, dta, programs, mail, three email a/c's, contacts et al. It would freeze up and not restore *anything* at all the first few times but then I unchecked the 'stop all processes prior to backing up' in the advanced menu dialog before proceeding with the backup and it did the job.
I recommend creating a stand alone restorer so that you don't have to install SPB backup again on the 6.1 rom.
I went from a stock 6.0 unbranded to a stock 6.1 off the HTC website. Waiting on my warranty to legally expire in Feb before I start flashing my phone to other roms.

If it's just calendar and contacts that you are worried about, surely after you synchronize with a laptop or desktop those details will be stored with ms outlook.
So after you do an upgrade, if you synchronize your phone again with laptop/desktop you will get those contacts and calendar entries back again.
Programs and files installed is another story.
hookup activesync, transfer /root/pim.vol to your desktop..
install 6.1 rom..
boot into windows.. rename the current pim.vol (on your phone) to pim1.vol. Transfer the old pim.vol that you saved on your desktop onto your phone.
Reboot to phone to reveal all your contacts and call history restored.. simple and easy.
delete pim1.vol from your phone and bam your done!
YES, the official windows mobile 6.1 kaiser update is very worth updating IMO. Video drivers are much better.. switch views is easy.. moving around is much faster.
JEC
So I am taking it that this upgrade is worth the time to do then? Sounds like stability is better with this upgrade. Hopefully no other issues involved with it. I am still running the stock ROM from AT&T on my phone that came with it with WM6.0.
So upgrade would be good with this then?
Thanks
Flandrel
What is the fastest rom?
Now that the official Orange rom is out, I want to upgrade.
I'm no stranger to upgrading (I flashed my old tytn quite a lot), but I always hated having to set everything up again.
I know it will only take a couple of hours, but I'm lazy!
I use sprite backup to backup everything to the internal storage, and I know sprite has a 'rom upgrade' feature. As I'm only planning on upgrading the stock 1.37 to 1.93, I'd like to know how safe restoring the sprite backup over the top will be.
I assume that the way it works is that files changed in a rom upgrade (for example the camera app) aren't writable from within the device, so sprite will just ignore these. This way all my normal apps will work fine and new versions of updated apps which are part of the rom will be ok.
Has anyone actually tried this and got any comments? Should registry tweaks stick (ie enabling gps photo, fixing the phone call screen blanking etc..)?
Sprite has three restore modes - i cant remember what they all do exactly but it is something like
1. ignore that it is a ROM update
2. Think of it as an update to a newer version of a similar ROM
3. Think of it as a totally different ROM
One of them should work but either way you will have a back up of you texts, email, diary etc. and worst case your can install all your apps/tweaks again.
btw. where did you find the official orange update?
Cheers, I've seen the options but I'm always skeptical about something like that actually working!
You can find info about the official rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426120
(plus a link to download it directly from orange).
I think I'll just make a list of my installed apps, use pimbackup (as well as sprite) to back up the pim databases, and give it a go.
Worst case scenario is that it takes a while to get everything installed again (although if this is the case I might go for an unofficial rom)
sprite works better than pimbackup
The first time is always the hardest.
Recently I've been playing with the registry to try and lower the 'lowest volume' setting for my headset with no success. Apparently I need to change the audiopara file. I'm thinking that changing the ROM may help. So here's a few questions:
1 - If I decide to go back I can download my original ROM from here (Generic Australia R3AA013 Software Update)?
2 - Do you reckon Christians 6.5 ROM is pretty good? Do you recommend changing ROM?
3 - Does each ROM come with it's own registry etc or do they rely on stuff on the phone (does flashing the ROM remove everything?).
Thanks!
.... sorry can't post links. Feel free to recommend a good 6.5 ROM.

Anyway...can i just flash hardspl again?
Thanks in advance

Another Question;

So could I restore my X1 to it's original ROM by downloading from the Link above?
Why would you choose to take the time to back-up your ROM if you can just download the original?

2. Some people flash their phones 2-3 times a day, so it's good to have something to fall back onto where everything is setup the way you want to. That being said, I don't back up my ROM, I just do a clean install every time I reflash.

Cool, thx.
When you do a hard-reset, which I've done recently, that take your phone back to square one. So I guess what I'm trying to work out is if it's necessary to back-up the ROM. Basically I'm being lazy.
I've downloaded two ROMs to try - Christian's ROM and Firestone V6.1.
HELP:!!! my x1i phone not running
lastly , i 've installed a language supporting program , then i restart the x1i but it did not boot again , it just reach to sonyericsson logo and still there .... i've tried hard_spl and all of these stuffs one by one. but when it connect to the device -as i remember the third step- it shows the the current verion: -it does not show any thing here- and the next version , 1.00.x or something like this.
when i clicked the next button i show the progress bar on each of tow (pc and x1i) and then stay on 0% for about 3 min then it show the recovery wizard , some time it said that "lost connection" others nothing but recovery... x1i here still showing the progress bar as 0% , so i remove the battery or soft reset to go into the recovery wizard , then i shows successfull recovery ... but i don't see any respond on the x1i , it's the same status , no boot no ability to update or or ...
when i connect the x1 and go to boot loader(manually known buttons) the Win XP (mine on pc SP2) show new device and good install driver and successfull driver installion on the first time and then just shows the sound of plug in the device or plug out...;
sorry if i said too much here . just i want to make it shown to all.

I would advice on backing up your personal things: contacts, mail, messages, some settings if you want (like hw keybd layout...)
to back-up a rom is only useful if you change reg settings often and want to have a backup in case of system crash/failure
as you intend to change your rom once in a while a backup of one specific rom doesn't make sense you see? preserve your personal data, that does it
pim, sprite, spb, synch, myphone, ... there are many ways, read about them and decide for yourself
@truthglow did you try with your sd card taken out?

I've my person data sorted. All my contacts are stored in Windows Live - so all I need is the Windows Live app to retrieve my contacts.
I use online sync for my calendars - so no problem there. Don't care if I lose my SMS messages.
I've copied across any pictures.
I store all the .cabs for my favourite apps on my SD card.
I made some changes to the registry to try and adjust the headset volume but to no success.
So probably don't need to pack up my Rom.
I like the look of Spike's X1.5 ROM.

sounds reasonable so far
you can use apps to automatize (to a degree) the restoring of personal settings/apps/progs/data/...
e.g. with user customization (UC) or sashimi
that's especially useful when often flashing an update of the already installed rom, as menu structure and general reg layout is similar (expect for certain update)
that way you can easily get most of your customization done without major effort (except of course for the one time you need to config your uc tool), right after flashing, some roms even check for uc configuration during rom customization process
about the reg edit: did the adjustment not work or the export of the changed setting?
yes i did it

^ I edited the registry in an attempt to decrease the headset minimum volume (I found the minimum volume too loud for in call & listening to the radio).
I have since learnt that I need to change the audiopara file. But I don't have the expertise. So I'm hoping my new 6.5 ROM's headset volume is a little quieter .
