Fast Charge, Charging Pinout Questions

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere; I couldn't find anything.
I'm looking into getting some spare chargers for my Tilt. I read at Pocket PC Techs that the device has a distinct "fast charge" mode, that uses a special pinout. Is this true?
If so, does the charger that comes with the Tilt use this fast charge mode? It seems to be just a standard mini-USB charger (data sheet here).
The link to Pocket PC Techs is actually to an adapter that they sell that is suppose to give you a fast charge with any USB charger. I'm wondering under what circumstances I'd have to use this.
Anyone know what the fast charge pinout is, and which third-party chargers use it?

ISTR reading something about pins 4 & 5 being tied together on some chargers -- should be very easy to test this.

I have not tested this but I suspect the pin out is the same as the Hermes:

The USB charging is done with different connections and at a different mA rating. The mains charger is 1000mA and is what I would call the normal charging system (but what the site you show, refers to as fast charge - but only by comparison to USB charging) This is just about standard for many sync/charge PDAs and not a special feature of the Kaiser.

I do notice a huge difference in speed comparing my old razor usb power adapter vs usb cable into my computer vs tilt power adapater so it prolly makes sense

Yep, the Razor adapter only delivers 500mA not 1000mA

Plus the razor charger does not have the pins 4-5 shorted, this is a HTC tweak that lets the phone know that it's on a charger vs std. USB power and it may in fact charge at a higher rate upon detecting this. I just know that my Hermes occasionally did strange things like turn off BT radio and other odd things when connecting/disconnecting from different chargers. Kaiser seems better at this.

For a couple of weeks now, I have been charging my Kaiser at work by using the adapter that came with my Audiovox SMT5600. It's been working fine. I cannot however determine if this charges any faster or slower than the Kaiser's adapter.

So that would explain when I use GPS in the car with my old RAZR charger why the battery still drains. Darn, looks like I'll have to buy a new car charger.

USB Charging
are there any issues iwth battery drain or lif when charging with the USB cable connected to a computer?

Is there a specific USB charger.

The pin out is the same as the Hermes?

I wouldn't think it would need to be tested. As per this page:
HTC has developed a range of accessories that are compatible across all HTC devices for consumer's ease of use. These include the BH M200 (Bluetooth headset), HS U110 (3.5 mm audio adapter and headset), and the HS S200 (HTC standard stereo wired headset) to enable effective communications on the move.

If the audio adapter and hard wired headset are compatible across all HTC devices (per HTC themselves), then that confirms that the pinout of the audio side is the same. And it's been mentioned earlier that the data side follows the mini-usb standard, which I can confirm: I'm using the usb cable from my camera to connect my Kaiser to my PC at home, while I use the supplied cable to connect it to my work PC.

I would like to use my old Himalaya MDA II Hands Free DSP Car Kit for my new Kaiser (as that I only have to buy a passive holder).
I tried to find a ExtUSB 11-lead Pre-wired Connector Plug ....but it is impossible..any suggestions?

I am experiencing a similar issue with an USB/car adapter and the USB cable that came with the Tilt.
Ran Google Maps yesterday with GPS on and when I got home my phone was almost empty. It was charging the whole time in the car though.
Does this mean I should look for another USB cable that is shorting those pins?
What about these adapters that plug into the phone and allow you to connect a USB cable for charging and a 3.5mm audio plug?

Mmm, that is a unique piece!! But the cable seems somewhat short.
I think at the end..I am going to combine following pieces to make the final connection to my old handsfree carkit.. (I hate soldering)

In answer to the original question, yes, pins 4 & 5 are shorted on the OEM charger that ships with the Tilts, thus enabling it to fast-charge the phone at currents greater than 500ma.

HTC Y-Adapter Modification to Allow 2.5mm to 3.5mm Adapter to Function?

Hi everyone, Ok like many others on here I want to connect my mogul to my car stereo. I picked up a 2.5mm(M) to 3.5mm(F) L adapter and figured I could use the HTC provided Y-adapter that has the 2.5mm(F). After trying the setup I noticed it only functioned if I left part of the L adapter sticking out (photo attached).
Which of course led me to believe it has something to do with the built in mic function on the HTC adapter. I then came on the forum and saw everyone having the same issue and recommeding bending pins on after market adapters especially if they are running custom roms (im on dcd 4.1.2).
I have attached a photo to show that I do get sound when I have the adapter partially pulled out. What I wanted to know if there was a way to modify the HTC wire in order to get that adapter to function correctly?
I saw that gator2k83 was nice enough to snap shots of the wires without the insert for the 2.5mm jack here.

It would be great if I could get a picture of what the inside of 2.5mm female socket looks like.
Still don't get why the L adapter doesn't work. Is HTC wiring there 2.5mm headset different then other manufacturers?

Does anyone know why for example the semons adapter 2-in-1 needs to have its pin modified if you are using a newer rom?

No need to modify anything. You just need to pick up a different 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter that's made specifically for cellphones. I picked one up a while back at Radio Shack. I forget how much, but I don't think it was expensive. The main difference between the two adapters is that the cellphone one has three bands instead of two, one for the microphone part of the phone jack and the other two are for the L and R channels. Your adapter is only contacting the microphone and L channels which is why you are having this problem. Try the other adapter and you'll find it works great.

TGabriele thanks for the reply! So the cellphone specially made has 3 bands, ahhh now that makes sense. Thats why sticking it in partially makes it work because the 3rd band isn't making contact.

You may want to take a look at the USB adapter that comes with the HTC Pure. If I remember correctly it comes with a connector that allows you to charge the phone while using the headphone jack. The connector will probably work fine on the sapphire.

HTC HD2 Car Kit CU/CK S400

Just received my HTC HD2 Car Kit from https://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=188277 And it works with my T-Mobile U.S. HD2. It launches Navipanel as soon as you place the phone in it. When you tap "Navigation" it launches TeleNav. It rotates the screen as you change the orientation of the phone. It comes with a high-end suction cup that you need to twist to lock on a smooth flat surface (and it stays locked). It also comes with special smooth adhesive disk that you can mount the main unit to in case you don't have a smooth surface available where you want to put it. It has a car charger that has a USB port and a micro to standard USB cable that connects to the base of the mount. A little bit pricey, but when considering that it meets my needs perfectly, then it is worth it.

It looks like it covers the headphone port, is there any way to get audio out from the unit or phone?

I was told there is such a thing as a micro USB to 3.5mm cable. Connecting this to the base and to your car's aux jack might work. You won't be able to charge the phone though. Unless there was a micro USB Y-splitter....??? Hmm...

why not use the 3.5mm jack to a 3.5mm jack ... same as the Iphone I already tried it and it works but just wont be able to listen to you factory radio....

Because ironcrotch is right, it does cover the headphone jack. There is however a micro usb at the base of the stand that could be used (acoording to HTC) to output audio. If so, then a micro usb to 3.5 mm cable could be connected to the car kit for the benefit of listening to audio.

It's a micro and not mini usb port on the base? If it was mini, there's an HTC USB charging/audio splitter that has a 3.5mm output and usb charging input in one...

yep that's expensive. I ended up going with CoPilot 8 its only $30 and no subscription fees - It does everything my Garmin can and more. I bought one of those universal windshield mounts and an extra usb cable to keep in my car so I can charge it. Grand total $50.
Since I have a Premier(pioneer) headunit i can plug my usb and 3.5 jack into it and get all my audio through my stereo - at the same time too.

Did anyone tried to use this with an micro-B to Mini-B adapter and the HTC USB/Audio Splitter.
I'm currently playing with the idea of getting an HD2 and I already own that splitter. But being able to use Audio in the carholder is significant for me...
any information on that issue would be very welcome.

[Q] Line out audio question

I've searched the HD2 accessories forum and found some inklings of the question I'm asking, but none that quite hit at the heart of the matter. So, my question is this:
Does the HD2 (TMO US) send line audio out through the micro-USB port? I would assume it does, since the dock HTC sells for the HD2 has a 3.5mm jack in back, and it only plugs into the phone via micro-USB.
And my follow-on question would be, if the HD2 does indeed have line audio in the micro-USB port, does anyone know of an actual splitter accessory that splits out line audio and USB charging? I saw this device at AndroidCentral.com's store (sorry, my new account doesn't allow external links) (htc-3-in-1-usb-adapter/5A18A3571.htm) in another thread. But since it's mini-USB and HTC claims it only works for the phones specified, does that mean a gender changer (Daydeal.com, Product ID 31355) wouldn't work with it? I browsed around to see if i found anything on this also but i don't think it's possible since it's not a A/V port of any sort. as far as your second Q: The splitter would only be that; something to add additional port's on the device. ie: Since it's connected thru the Micro-sub and the splitter has a mini(assuming)-usb port, it can therefore be charged, Also add's an extra audio jack. (just examples)

It may be that the HD2 by itself may not have line audio or any video out signal tied to the micro-USB port, but just the fact that that splitter exists for earlier HTC phones' mini-USB ports gives me hope that the line audio pin out is there. I mean, I'm not an electronics wiz by any stretch, but I think mini and micro USB only require 2 pins for power, right? And there's at least 4 pins there on a micro port.

The older HTC phones used the mini-USB compatible extUSB interface-where the top portion of the connector did the duty as the USB interface and the bottom portion of the connector was the audio interface. Between everyone hating to have a dongle to the emergence of microUSB as the industry standard put extUSB on the road to extinction.

Thanks for that. Makes sense, since they decided (for some stupid reason) to not add a 3.5 mm headphone jack to those phones. But what doesn't make sense is how they can give these newer phones great hardware, and tout their multimedia capabilities, and yet not add a functionality that Apple has had built in since their first iPhone. That's the main reason I still use it: because I don't want to carry two devices around.
