For some reason the "thinking/waiting" animation continues to pop up. Soft resents don't work. I have done a couple of hard resets to start from scratch. It just keeps coming on for 2 seconds and then disappears for about five.
Have you experienced anything similar? how do I fix it?

We need to know what you actually mean.(soz to sound patronising but this is a world wide forum and I have only just got used to 'Tethering'...)
OK, I assume you mean the busy icon (rotating symbol like the hourglass from old windows).
Do you have any automatic mail checks or any other app's that require data access running in the background? (as they will not work without the following) do you have a working internet setup?
Let the guys know these things and someone here will surely help you...
It seems like that pesky Activesync activating. Next time that happens, go look at your taskbar. Most likely its Activesync "activating".
Sometimes it happens too me a gazillion times a day. Sometimes it never happens at all. Still trying to figure that thing out.
To clarify, I am referring to the rotating red/green/yellow/blue circle. Here are the explicit details:
Unlocked TyTN II (ROM version 1.56.405.5)
3G At&T SIM I have a std voice plan and the unlimited media net internet plan
After the last hard reset I installed
Pocket Informant 2007
Memmaid
Resco Explorer
SPB Pocket Plus
I have a hotmail and gmail account setup to check the servers frequently, although that was the case before this started also.
The circle animation appears in flight mode also.

OH WOW....
review your startup apps, use a file explorer and browse to /windows/startup. List for us what is starting up in there.
Unfortunately, i just isolated the cause of that friggin wait animation. I uninstalled SPB Plus 4 and now it is gone....Here is my new problem:
I love SPB Plus!!
What do I do now?
what options of PP4 did you have turned on. I use PP4 and that never happens so it's something in your config.

Well you've grabbed smitty now who will sort ANY network prob out.. I'm off cause he blows me away in this area..
I'm just general stuff and GPS so I know when I am not wanted..SOB! BIG SMILES...
I had all of the options ticked in PP4. I guess the most important to me is the today plugin and the x close app. I will reinstall those and leave everything else out and see what happens.
This kind of sucks.
hmmm... after reinstall PP4, try this:
First, check the options you want and see if the same things happens. If it's not doing it, then maybe it was a bad reg entry on install.
if it's still doing it, then go to settings > system > task manager and make sure everything is unchecked.
My thought process on this is maybe you have the Close button from PP4 and the built-in task manager trying to compete.
Let us know...
i installed the Today Plugin, Close Button, Taskbar Battery Indicator and PIE Enhancements. It looks like smittyofdhs saved the day.
Thanks a lot, guys.

was it just a reinstall that fixed it or did you do something more? It helps to list out what steps you took to fix the problem, for the sake of future users of this forum
glad to hear it's working again....
As simply an enthusiast, not an expert, I am guessing that your advice was the solution. I don't think the reinstall by itself resolved it.
I would say that the original issue stemmed from conflict between the built in HTC task manager and the PP4 x-button.
I uninstalled pp4. Before reinstalling I disabled all function of the HTC task manager. Then I reinstalled only the PP4 today plugin, battery meter, x-button and PIE stuff.
When I have more time, I will uninstall pp4 and reinstall all of the pp4 components as i believe that the issue is isolated as described above.
Thanks again. you saved Christmas.

cool, glad it was something simple. As soon as you said you had the PP4 close button turned on I figured that was the direction to pursue.

Hi Smitty,
I don't think it is the PP4 close button as I have also encountered the problem after installing version 4.0.2. I have always disabled the close button and battery indicator of PP4 as I used WKTask and pwrstat respectively.
As the busy indicator only showed on the Today screen and I have only 3 plugins activated (PP4, HTC Home and Calendar), I disabled the plugins one by one and found that PP4 is the one causing the problem.
Checking the options of PP4, I disabled the "Refresh icons in today plug-in when storage card is inserted." option. The problem disappeared. However, when I enabled back the option, I was unable to simulate back the problem.
Until now, I still have that option on but the problem has not manifest again.

glad you fixed your own issue. In ellistyle's case, my solution helped him. Maybe they are 2 different issues caused by the same app. Either way, everyone is happy with their fix.
Hi,
I've installed taskiller 1.5 on my G2 but it doesn't seem to work when I try to stop all applciations.... well he closes everything in the TasKiller list which is fine but when I long-press the home button I still see applications in the "normal" application list which aren't visible in the TasKiller list...
Any idea? I've already reinstalled it... is it possible that the reason is that my G2 isn't rooted?
Any other great applications to close all open app (preferably with an exclusion list)?
Thx!
B
I dont think those apps necessarily are running. It just displays the ones recently used.
Hi,
At first your G2 must be rooted !
After that this application works lovely
well the killing in taskiller works, but I still see applications when I long-press the home button...
can someone say for sure if these applications are running or if they are just the "recently-used" list?
I also heard that applications in the background are "idle" in android and don't consume any battery, RAM or CPU... can someone confirm this?
thx
B
hi, I am the taskiller's developper.
First : the home button display most recently used apps.
Second : taskiller display all runnings app (and service) except "system", "android core", and phone app (because some guys kill the phone app for test : system will crash sometimes after)
Theses apps are maybe idle and dont consume cpu (but have allocated memory), maybe I will add feature to display the status.
Hi, maybe you can exclude the alarm clock as well from the kill-list because I've noticed when setting an alarm, and using taskiller afterwards the alarm doesn't go off anymore!
cheers

Yes I know but it's limited at 2 app and already used
I sent an email to the developer to include this feature (alarm) in the next release.
next release will automatically ignore the alarm, and remove it from the ignore list, I post it on the market as soon as possible (I try another feature before ^^)

True ,,,
My G2 not rooted, TaskKiller works fine.
Thanx "horb" for this App
Hero and Taskiller..
I have used the Taskiller full version on my HTC Magic, and was always very satisfied with it; now, the same feeling with Taskiller on my new HTC Hero. But, one question, maybe somebody can help me:
I guess due to the Hero's extended UI, there are several new, repeating processes on the Taskiller list (com.htc.provider, com.htc, com.htc.dcs, etc) which I have never seen on the Magic. Could somebody (Taskiller developers?) please provide a list of the essential Hero-specific processes, which should be put on the ignore list on the HTC Hero?
Thanks in advance.
As above, is it possible to do that in HTC Dream? Mine is rooted and flashed to 4.2.3.
What I mean is that, when I am using this application (ABC), then I want to open another application (XYZ). After using XYZ, can I swtich to ABC with the state still being there? Meaning it will not open like a new application, but go directly to the screen that I was previously at?
Hold the home button to see running tasks.. then pick one.

it will only go back if the phone has enough ram to keep it stored, else android will kill the process
goldenarmZ, if i'm not wrong when holding down the 'Home' button, is actually opening up recent opened applications.
B-man007, means there is no way to switch around tasks?

If they're still in memory, it will switch back to the same instance you were using, if not it'll launch a new one.
How to make one application stay in memory?
Advanced Task Manager can stop processes from getting killed.. It's in the market.
Yeah, I have that application too but how you make it not being killed?
Is there a faster way? Holding home just seems like it takes forever.

I got the built-in Android App Switcher working.... use the camera button.
You need the new kernel/NBH below -- this is based on dzo's 4/8 kernel
Camera button.
< 0.5 second press = BACK
0.5 - ~1.5 second press = HOME
> 1.5 second press = APP SWITCHER (pops up after you hold it long enough)
For home, you just have to do a leap-of-faith. If you hold it too short, you'll go back. If you hold it too long, the app switcher will come up. I reduced the time you need to hold it to 0.5 seconds. It was 1 second before.
Useful tip: You can use the App Switcher on the home screen.
Please don't ask to change the task switcher button! The task switcher is mapped to the HOME button by Android itself. I only fixed the kernel to enable Android to recognize the button push properly. To actually move the task switcher to a different button, you need to rebuild Android.
What I mean: http://developer.android.com/images/system-architecture.jpg
I fixed the red part. The stuff that allows you to change the App Switcher button is in the blue part (Application Framework).
Myn's build (should work on any build):
NBH files (both donut and eclair):
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/58383/android/ROMUpdateUtility.7z
Need 7zip to extract (makes file size smaller).

If you're using NoMoRootfs (i.e. androidinstall.tar) then you can use this kernel.
I thought Cupcake has an App Switcher. Not totally sure.

Np. Took me less than 10 minutes to fix it, and a lot longer to get the NBH build environment up (didn't realize tinboot had a norootfs branch......).
oh man this is nice!
thanks alot!!
Flashing now... Seems to work great... Doesn't allow you to switch to old apps... which I'm sure is stock functionality... for example, I have JuiceDefender launcher on startup and I couldn't access it via the task switcher, I had to go into OSMonitor, click on it, then switch to it that way...

It will only let you switch between the last 6 applications you used. It won't show them until you use them (which is why I had 2).

If i do a backup from the bootscreen options list, then reflash with this version, Can I to a restore so that I do not have to totally start from scratch?

Never mind... figured it out. A little searching never hurts.
This is freakin sweet. Thanks, for making this happen!
Edit: Nevermind, apparently it just needed a reboot. Working fine now.
Although, something was preventing it from sleeping. I don't know what. I knew it wasn't sleeping because even after 30 seconds, any button would wake it up (and Spare Parts reported the last time since it slept was 8 hours).
Original:
Apparently the kernel I built isn't sleeping properly.
I don't know why, feel free to go back to dzo's older 4/8 build.
I commited the changes I made. Dzo can recompile when he gets back and see if the sleeping problem is resolved.
My battery ran down to 33% in 8 hours. Not sleeping at all.
This is just opening up the recent apps screen, isn't there an actual task switcher?

It's the Recent Applications screen, but it actually does switch tasks. The other applications open up in the state you left them (unless they were garbage collected).
Also, for example, if you have Messaging and Opera open, then task switch from Opera to Messaging, when you use the back key it will back to Opera rather than the home screen.
works well. Testing right now
I have not had any sleeing issues. Working great.

Okay, so I want to be able to do a couple of things. The first is nagging me, as I'm sure there's a way to do it, the second I'm not so sure about.
1) I want to be able to access the multi-tasking/Recent Apps list from anywhere. My idea is to push and hold Menu to get it to pop up, since Home uses Google Now when it's pushed and held. I know there was a way to do that with the search key back when we had 4 keys using LaunchKey, but I can't find anything to let me assign push/hold functionality to Menu. I'm rooted, so I'm sure there's a way to do this...
2) This I'm not so sure of. Because of the charging port being on the side of the phone, it works best in my car when it's held in a landscape orientation in my windshield-mounted dock. This is great for everything except one thing: the dialer. I know in most AOSP custom ROMs I've used on other phones, the dialer rotates with the phone. Since I've rarely stuck to stock on a phone before, and we're kind of forced to here, is there a way to get the dialer to rotate?

1. What jonslice says.
2. Download another dialer in the play store.

And yeah, downloaded another dialer. Forgot I could do that (since I've never really done it before). Thanks guys!
