In the pictures all over the net, I see the Kaiser as either being completely black or being dark gray. Now I just received mine and it seems to be light silver/gray on the front side of the phone. What's up with that? Is it like this for everyone else or like, are there different versions going around?
yeah, mine is like that as well. i would have preferred all black, but i can't complain.
eric b
all black would have been great. i bet orange will make it like that, they always change the housing with a very good design !
agreed. Can that bit of plastic be removed? You could probably spray it with a black laquer quite easily if you could get it off without breaking it.
Anyone here how actualy does have a black kaiser? And is it still a 120 model?
Anyone knows who sells those black ones? All I see now are the silver models, and I would really like mine to be black.

this is the true colors of the HTC Kaiser:
my kaiser has a black rubbery back, black keyboard, black upper housing around the screen bit and a gray/silver brushed metal looking screen besel
yea like the post above ^^

I guess it depends on what you think of as "light grey / silver". I would say it's closer to gunmetal / dark grey than silver. It's probably one of the nicest designs I've seen on a phone of this type... IMHO.
All the unlocked ones are dark grey / black.
Now the T-Mobile version is most certainly silver.
The Black Kaisers are the 100 (without camera) and 110 (without 3G) they gonna released soon.
This is what mine looks like.

I'm looking at my Vario III right now, and it's most definitely NOT silver. It's a gunmetal/dark grey with a brushed steel effect on the front. Silver is very light coloured.
is the kaiser also known as the TyTN 2 or is that a different phone?

Kaiser is the development project name for the phone. TyTn II is the official release product name. Other names such as MDA Vario III are brand names used by certain carriers such as T-Mobile.

I have yet to see any pictures of all completely black Kaisers... And the 110 without the front camera is being sold by AT&T in the same housing (save the awful chrome buttons) as the full unlocked version. I am skeptical as to the existence of any "black" Tytyn IIs.

Black is like... the best color for any piece of electronics. I can't believe they'd just skip past it in favor of light silver/gray. What is this world coming to?!

Hello guys,
I'm about to jump on the g1 train, currently trying to decide between white or black Dream. I have only seen the black in person (still looking for the white ;P) and there arent that many reviews or opinions posted on the net (that I could found at least) as to what the difference between the two (other than the color of course) and their build quality is.
So, please post your opinions on the matter. I'm pretty sure there are quite a few users in here with the white version. Black seems more popular, for some reason its also more expensive in most shops. But is it also more robustly built?
The one solid difference I've been able to read about is that the white phone doesnt have the rubberized back the black one has. Is this true? What about the quality of the plastic used? Are both solid, or is one "weaker" than the other? How do both feel after a few months of use? Is the white one a magnet for dirt?
Thank you guys
Cheers

i dunno. I have seen an all white battery cover offered in a few other countries. If you do go white, you might want to look into the white battery cover. it looks slick
definanetly get a black one with the nice matte finish(it look the best) i have a white one and the paint is chipping around the memory stick slot, the chin and it is not very scratch resistant
even if you dont take the outer color into consideration, the keyboard on the black one is the best...the white and brown G1 have a keyboard that is harder to read in daylight.
black one! you can actually SEE the keyboard
Amen... White looks nice, but goodluck trying to see what youre typing if the sun is shining on it.

There is a way around the problem if you use "Backlight Off" from the market. You do however need root for it to work.....
funny you guys say that about the keyboard. i find it very hard to use in the sun, hardly see the keys at all. as far as build quality gos.
i love my white G1, however. it has a slight imperfection in regard to the underside of the chin where the backplate clicks onto on one side. it has a very small gap making that side not sit flush with the body of the phone. its not enough to notice unless you look for it but it drives me insane. the problem is worse when i use the extended battery making the whole thing feel flimsy and creaky. i have found myself wondering if i made the right choice getting a white one over a black.
I have the Bronze and the key board sucks outside wish I would have got the black.. But I still love my G1
Wow thanks a lot for the replies. White does look a lot better in pics (in my opinion at least ). Seems I'll take the black one tho
Thanks again, really helpful replies!
Cheers,
Niko
White one IS better looking.
I've got a black one, and hope I had chosen a white one... and most of my friends with the white one would say the same for the black one. Don't care much about the 'finish' or 'keyboard', it's all the same, just go for the one you personally prefer.
I would def stick with the black
Black unless you want to replace the keyboard. Even with backlight off on my bronze the keys were unreadable at times. With my black one it's looking for a program that turns back light on without a keypress.
I've got a black G1 and a friend of mine has got a white one.
Build quality is comparable i think, but there several other factors which make me favor the black G1:
- The 'rubbery' finish of the battery cover provides superiod grip when holding the G1 in your hand.
- The keyboard (even when lit) is better readable on a black g1 than on a white one. probably because the contrast between black keys/white characters on the keys is bigger.

in tmobile UK they offer the white g1 with white battery cover and white keys on the keyboard. but silver middle.
tmobile us is half white and from the keyboard down its silver. the back cover does however have the rubbery feel.
the white g1 however chips soooo easily =\ i have the white one. and i was reading somewhere that the first white g1s that were released in te US had the same whtie battery cover as the UK one,but were quickly recalled becuz of paint chipping issues.
i bought the black g1 first, but returned it for the white g1 since white is mroe visually appealing to me. however the white g1 keybaord sucks ass in daylight. white backlight on a silver keyboard just makes it hard to see.
some black g1s had the silver middle and keyboard, but nowadays tmobile stores sell a full black g1. the keyboard is actually a lot easier to see.but i hate the black g1 matte finish.
you can buy ZAGG invisible shield to make the black g1 have a shiny look and also protect it from scratches and chips.. or buy it for the white g1 to protect it from scratches and chips as well.
i plan to however to buy a white battery cover and install the zagg invisible shield(btw zagg offers lifetime warranty so you can easily get a replacement for free)
I've noticed that HTC HD7 have slight cosmetic variation depending which region or carrier you get the device from!
Here in the UK if you get it from O2 you don't get the yellow accent behind the kickstand like it is shown on the HTC website instead it's silver which is same like the US T-Mobile version and also the T-Mobile version has a slight sliver finish on the front cosmetic speaker grills?
I've also noticed in some Italian blogs their HD7 has a blue accent behind the kickstand!
With all this variation it would have been nice if HTC made them available in all regions especially the colour behind the kickstand IMHO the yellow accent does look cool!
I like the Yellow one as well. Until it was released in the US, seeing the pictures in the previews, I hoped that we would have a Yellow one as well. But we got the Silver. Well, its not a big deal, but could have been cool if we had options.

I'm going to say the same. I thought the neon green/yellow gave it a unique hue compared to the usual black/chrome, black/red or white devices out there.
I have a yellow one.
I ordered it at a Belgian online service, but it seems like they imported it from Italy as the manual and so is in italian
If you look closely at the insert it looks as though it can be removed, possibly switched with another color or possibly painted whatever color you want. When I get a chance I will have to try and remove it if possible and see how easy it is.
Well after taking the rear cover off I realized that it is part of the whole rear plastics under the cover. And to remove the cover you have to remove a screw that has a warranty sticker on it. I guess if you REALLY wanted to you could remove the kickstand itself and mask off the area (flash LEDs and camera) and paint the area the desired color. But its not a seperate piece its part of the rear cover
Maybe one day I'll feel adventerous and mask it off and paint it with some chameleon paint I have left from another project.
I have the yellow one too....Bought it last week in india..
Yellow? i have orange
the asian version has a black back covering compared to the us and uk version. and yes it has a yellow tint behind the kick stand. the us version has also a different box than the uk version. the us version of the box can be opened by lifting the top while the uk version one needs to slide the box to its side.
im sure there are no significant differences in terms of whats in the device.these are just cosmetic variations.
i like the uk and the us versions...
i've got the yellow too and i like it more compared to the grey t mobile version...
lookin at some pics i think the italian hd7 is darker, the bezel is dark crome. It looks like tmobile is more like silver crome...also the (fake) speakers grid are black in my hd7..would be cool if they matched the yellow...maybe a too "young" look but i would have loved it
I bought a nexus one on ebay and I noticed that the trackball is black. Does this mean that someone opened it up (voiding the warranty) or that some N1s from google came with a black trackball as well as the white one?
I don't even remember what my trackball looked like a year ago, but it's nearly black now. It still flashes all the right colors though.

Hey, the black one looks even better than the original trackball
You can simple check if someone opened your N1. Just remove the battery cover and take a closer look at the upper left screw. There should be a "Void" - seal on top of the screw...
best,

I have 2 Nexus: one trackball is dark and the other is white... even the cases are different: brown vs gray.. so I think there are 2 different type, because one is from Google and another one is from SFR France. For me it looks good the dark one but the light of white is better... And if you say it is dirty then how is so uniform?!

Actually, i found this trackball at globaldirectparts (http://www.globaldirectparts.com/OEM-Google-Nexus-One-Trackball-p/htc736500.htm) and they confirmed that it is the black/grey one. The bad news: I'm still not 100% convinced that THIS is really the black one, second: you have to buy five

The trackball on mine is as bad as that, and I can assure you it was white when I bought it I think it's caused by the blue dye rubbing off from my jeans pocket. I wouldn't mind except that it's so bad now that I can hardly see the notification lights except at nighttime, and I find that really annoying.
I've tried just about everything to clean it short of taking the phone apart (which looks tricky...). Pure IPA, citrus cleaner, bleach, and various ways of rubbing/rolling it. Nothing has made any real difference unfortunately, but at least none of those have done any harm either.
If anyone has any better ideas I'd be interested in hearing them.
I got a chance today to get hold of both variations. Other than the obvious color on the back, there are several subtle differences:
1. Earpiece color, black vs white
2. Side finish, matte vs glossy
3. Back finish, soft-touch vs regular matte plastic (contrary to what Engadget reported)
I was going to grab the white one for the look, but after getting them in my hands, I changed my mind. That soft touch back on the black one is really comfortable to touch (I don't plan on using a case anyway). Also, I prefer the earpiece to be black.
Also take a look at this post:

Weak, I didn't know that (about the finish on the back) or I too would've opted for black.
So the conclusion is that white has the better looking and the black is more comfortable for using?

16gb white was all that was available when i hit the play store yesterday so that's what i ordered. i like the black / white combo on this device and ordered the white spiegen ultra fit case to show it off.
won't really matter how the back compares against the black once the case is on there.

Well yes, this is my opinion, although IMO white is just slightly more appealing if it also have a soft touch back.
I guess having soft touch on white is either very difficult, or will make it stain/turn yellow easily
I always believed that the white one will not have soft touch, until I read the Engadget report...but it turns out to be false
I have a white GS3 and love white devices but after never being able to get a case or bumper that can stay clean, I opted for the black Nexus 5.
Man, if I had known the white wasn't a soft-touch stain magnet, I may have considered it more. That white ear piece grill is ugly, though.
Now that you mention it it makes sense that they wouldnt go soft touch with the white. Makes me long for the black one now. Im not usually one to put my phone is a case, but I think without the softback I might go with a case this time around and see how it works. Regardless, they both look like great pieces of hardware

Man thats disappointing. I was looking forward to the white. Did the back cover feel like the same type of plastic on the white HTC HERO? I Wish I could get hands on both. I was really up for the white but the ear piece looks silver in pics and I thought it would really detract from the gorgeous screen always catching your eye.
Shame they really should have documented that there was a difference in the two models and how they are finished.
Also how did the glossy sides feel of the white one? Im assuming the white is aimed stereotypically at the female market hence the glossy glossy sides.

I don't know how it compares to Hero... My first Android device is the GNex. It feels similar to white Note 3's back.
The sides shouldn't make that much difference in feel, I guess (I didn't check that out).

I've got it in hand and it is really good looking, the back is a soft touch plastic but it is different to the black. The black is identical to the 2013 N7, where as the white is smoother and less absorbent, but still very comfortable.
Let's put it this way, in was stood with the black in one hand and the white in the other, could have had either and I walked away with the white

ALL the phones/tablet he show in the comparison have greasy prints all over
Even the two-year old phone I use everyday is much cleaner...
Yeah looking at YouTube vids the white is soft touch. The sides are definitely glossy I actually think it looks more premium than the black.
However the white earpiece cover is freaking unforgivable in my eyes who thought that was a good idea. Its so freaking distracting.
It may be good so you can quickly pick up the phone the right way up but coming from a gnex my eye is drawn to it since its the same size as the notification light on my nexus.
Also watching any video on this and your always going to be drawn to the white dot. If they were willing to do that they may as well have made the whole thing white. The point in the black front is to stop glare or light reflection so as not to distract from the screen. This does the opposite.
It reminds me of a mini galaxy tab when it first came out. I liked that and I like this just not the white earpiece. Silly design feature.

Seriously, I can't use the phone without noticing these thick black borders. The soft gold variant appealed me because Oneplus photoshopped out the black borders inside the bezels. Why oneplus why?
Furthermore, I don't have any option to return the phone as I've imported it. I am hating the phone that I wanted to love.

Yes, but not to the level of this phone. Apple, to their credit shiw the border(which is thinner than on OP3 anyway) in the promotional pictures. But if you look at OP3's website the gold color is shown without any border. I feel bit cheated.
I'm overacting a bit but I'm really regretting the fact that I don't have an option to exchange it for a black one.

For me looks nice, question is why people can't check what they are buying, funny problem

Because they might live in a country where they don't have access to do so.
I just received my "russian girl" OP3... first thing, it is not bling-bling at all, the gold tone is very soft, and yes the white face is a little of a shock to me since this is the very first time I have a phone with a white face, but I'm sure I will get used to it. It does not look like a cheap chinese telephone at all as someone said, which is funny because this IS a cheap chinese phone .
The only thing I do not like is the screen protector that comes with it, it is like wearing a size S t-shirt when you are size L .
Forgot to say that the black line around the screen is a non issue for me.

You're able to buy the phone but not to compare the different product pictures?

No I couldn't as I live in Kashmir. My phone was purchased from Dubai by someone else.

Funny thing is I like the gold on the back, white front is not too flashy until you turn the display on. I'm using the phone on dark mode to hide the borders.
May be it's just OCD? no?

Looks like you found the perfect phone since you can't notice anything wrong with the design.

Online pictures are different from what you get actually.

For me this Soft Gold model is just perfect for it's price. The tiny black border doesn't bother me at all, it's on all white front phones I've seen and used. Otherwise it's also much better than I expected after reading these threads here and on OnePlus forums complaining just about anything. Very positively surprised.
It's all about personal taste and preference I guess!
@brickedvice could you post a photo of the Soft Gold phone with the screen protector that has black top and bottom? I'd love to see how it looks
